Arnprior road construction expands to include Daniel Street The road construction work in Arnprior will expand to Daniel Street starting on Tuesday, Aug. 2. The town will be undertaking watermain improvements on Daniel between Charles and Michael streets. Daniel will be narrowed to two lanes as temporary lane closures will be implemented. Work at intersections will require temporary detours for access to Charles, Galvin, Robert and Harvey streets. The town advises motorists to expect delays. Meanwhile, Madawaska Street continues to be closed to all through traffic between Daniel and John streets. As well, the rehabilitation of Claybank Bridge on White Lake Road has begun in earnest. Traffic is restricted to a single lane, controlled by traffic lights. The maximum veDEREK DUNN/METROLAND hicle width allowed is 3.5 metres. The new traffic lights keep traffic to one lane on the Claybank Bridge. LENORE WHELAN/SUBMITTED
The view from Lenore Whelan’s third floor living room window is dominated by construction equipment these days. Whelan lives close to the Arnprior Library and has a first hand view of the downtown revitalization digging, paving and other noisy goings-on. The work usually begins at 7 a.m. each day. However, there is a silver lining. Whelan has a grandson that loves construction.

Three generations play hockey at Nick Smith Continued from front
And now he stands in the Nick Smith Centre parking lot wearing a shiny new Arizona Coyotes golf shirt, given him by his grandson. Only John can know the wild ride in store for younger dad Jeff, who will enjoy a backseat view of Jakob’s professional hockey career. “We’re both from Saskatchewan,” John says, grinning broadly. “It was quite a thing.” ***
Jeff played all over North America, from L.A. to Edmonton. But it was White Lake where he decided to settle during summer months. He and wife Nancy have a
cottage there. He is careful to note it is “in the south” of White Lake. He won’t claim to be from the village, knowing the rural penchant for geo distinctions urban dwellers tend to gloss over. It also helps that White Lake is close to the Ottawa Senators’ arena where he would train with other NHLers. “We always wanted a cottage and just fell love with the place,” Jeff said, adding that it is good to be near his dad. Now 50, a half century of living, Jeff nevertheless carries himself as much younger; affable yet with the maturity of a man who has gently nurtured young players for more than a few years. He coached Jakob’s teams up to Bantam when they
lived in Florida. As he stands 6-foot-5, it was admittedly a bit comical to see him unfold from the passenger side of a quarter ton truck in the Nick Smith parking lot. Wearing a purple Do It For Daron t-shirt, Jeff shakes hands with the strength and confidence of a man who battled and won the most difficult cup in professional sports. It quickly becomes obvious Jeff has been a team captain at least once. He has worn the ‘C’ that signifies much more than on-ice skills. Leadership, respect, humility: the attributes soon become manifest. “I remember one year we came up for the Bell (Capital) Cup,” Jeff said, soon to get his gear from the truck.
Municipal Matters
“We played London in the final, and their coach is looking over at me and telling me how to coach.” He laughed in recalling how a team from the Sunshine State came up to the home of hockey. And won. Also laughing was the figure beneath Jeff’s shadow when they walked over from the truck. Shorter than his dad, 18-year-old Jakob is nonetheless a striking figure. A bright and expectant face, seriously jacked by countless hours in a gym, he appeared to have less body fat than a certain reporter’s breakfast that day; the appearance of an elite athlete in every way. Asked about June 24 – the day of the 2016 NHL draft – when he drove from Ottawa to Buffalo with his family, Jakob took a slight step back as if rocked by the memory. The Coyotes, who traded up to pick the highly-ranked defenceman, called him to the stage to join a team of exciting young stars led by franchise superstar Shane Doan. He put on the jersey for the first time. “There are so many emotions,” Jakob said. “Excitement and happiness most of all. It’s all I’ve been working for for a long-time, and to see my hard work pay off – it was really great.” He quickly recovered to say much

work lies ahead before he secures a spot on the roster. Jakob has trained at Paul and Lucas Lawson’s Pro Skaters school in Arnprior. Jeff says the former Sarnia Sting defenceman has worked just as hard as anyone he has ever known, which says a lot from a former NHLer. “He’s as committed as anyone I’ve known.” Jeff admits to challenging his son somewhat when a youth, but very little for most of his life. Jakob pushes himself and has grown up with other Floridians who work hard at their chosen sports, usually baseball and football. The toughest interview question came next: “So which of you is the best hockey player?” Grandson and son don’t hesitate to point at John, as all break out laughing. See OLD-TIMERS, page 5

The electric vehicle charging stations proposed for the Metro store and McDonald’s restaurant in Arnprior will be significantly stronger than the one planned for Tim Hortons on Madawaska Boulevard. The first two will be level 3 charging stations and the latter a level 2. A level 2 station uses a 240-volt system (similar to a clothes dryer plug) and can fully charge a vehicle from zero per cent charge in about four to six hours. A level 3 station (also known as Direct
Current Fast Chargers or DCFC) use a 480volt system and can charge a vehicle to 80 per cent in about 30 minutes. These stations allow EV drivers to charge their vehicles about eight times faster than level 2 chargers and permit them to travel further than ever before. The only other Renfrew County communities that will get any of the 500 stations announced by the provincial government to be put in place by next March are in Pembroke and Deep River. Renfrew is not getting a charging station.

Stay off the CP rail corridor, county tells residents Staff
Since the CP rail lines have been ripped out throughout Renfrew County, the corridor has become a popular route for a variety of recreationalists despite efforts by the company to keep people away. The County of Renfrew is reminding resident that even though it has taken over the rail line in the anticipation of developing it as a future recreation trail, it doesn’t mean the corridor is open to the public. In a new release Monday, the county stressed that the route remains closed to ensure public safety. After the rails were removed, CP Rail put up signage, dug trenches and erected berms along the line in an effort to deter people from using it. However, many users continue to ignore the signs and go around the barricades.
Hikers, ATVers, dog-walkers, bicyclists, dirt bikers and joggers are frequently seen using the route. However, people should wait until the plan for the corridor is finalized, says the county. County staff are currently undertaking a safety review and inspection of the entire corridor. It will include the temporary removal of berms on the route. “We ask for the public’s patience as we continue to work through the acquisition process and the creation of a CP Trail Management Plan,” said County of Renfrew CAO Jim Huttion. “The corridor is not open to the public and it remains closed at this time to ensure the safety of our residents.” Public meetings are being planned in the fall of this year to gather input from residents on who should be allowed to use the corridor.
Renfrew County, Lanark County and the Township of Papineau-Cameron formed a partnership in 2011 and recently signed a lease and donation agreements to acquire ownership of the 296-kilometre abandoned CP Rail between Smiths Falls and Mattawa. Renfrew county’s portion of the corridor runs from the Arnprior/Ottawa border in the south to the Renfrew/Mattawa border in the North. The intent is to work with local municipalities, the public and other partners to develop the multi-use trail.
Horton official plan session added The County of Renfrew has added a Horton meeting to its series of public input sessions in August on the updating of its official plan. Some elements of the plan have caused debate in the township, so a meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 23 at the Horton Community Centre. It will be the seventh and final meeting in the series that also includes sessions in McNab-Braeside, Calabogie, Eganville and Cobden. The open houses are intended to inform the public on proposed changes included in the five-year review of the official plan.
The meetings will begin with an open house from 5:30-7 p.m. when county staff will be available to answer questions one-on-one with residents. That will be followed by a formal public meeting from 7-9 p.m. The meeting for residents in the far south end of the county is set for Thursday, Aug. 11 at McNabBraeside Municipal Office, 2508 Russett Dr. Calabogie’s meeting is Monday, Aug. 15. A copy of the amended official plan is available on the County website or can be viewed at any municipal office in the county.

From PMS to Menopause …the journey of womanhood MENOPAUSE
Today, I’ve promised to talk a little more about menopause. They say that in a state of true health, menopause is just a natural change to a state where menstruation stops and a woman is unable to have children. While during the first year or two some minor hormonal imbalances may happen in form of hotflashes, these should take their flow and dissappear naturally on their own. Menopause usually occurs for woman between 45- 55 years of age. Many though, have excessive symptoms either during the period of the natural change or even prior or way beyond what is considered normal and natural. Some woman are plagued with such heavy and painful menses, that they are bed ridden or afraid of leaving the house or getting up from a seat, as they have such a gushing flow that can easily soil their clothes. Of course this brings forth also the issue of loosing so much blood and iron that many now suffer from extreme tiredness. I am specialized in helping people get back on their feet, reduce the heaviness of their periods and make sure their body gets back to a natural process of the “change over years”. Other woman may feel that they have lost their libido in general or partiicularly because of vaginal dryness - another common by-product of menopause. In order to continue to have a wonderful relationship and continuous intimacy with your partner, without any menopausal disruption, I have some great natural alternatives to lubricants. So many woman, sexually active or not, have raved about the healing affects of this ointment, which you make yourself at home. And for others they may suffer unbearable hotflashes. Can you imagine how it feels to have to change your clothes or your bed covers all the time? Not even to mention how that might impact your snuggle time with your hubby. In these rather extreme cases many woman are very embarrassed, particularly when they go out and know others will see their soaking wet hair or even worse if their clothes are drenched. I know many woman personally who have been so inhibited over the years by their hotflashes that they withdraw from their social life and mainly stay home. Please don’t do this to yourself. Even if you think you have tried everything, there is something we can do for you. PMS is another challenge for many woman and my Heilkunst treatment has helped many woman over the last decade to deal with their emotions and overwhelm. Call me and let’s talk!

Sports will win out I
t’s always easier to be cynical than to expect the best of a challenging situation. And the upcoming Olympics in Brazil certainly poses challenges. The threat of the Zika virus is prompting some athletes to drop out. There are questions about security and pollution. And the thought of Russian secret service agents creeping around in the dark, replacing little bottles of tainted urine with little bottles of clean urine is laughable. That’s no way to boost the image of international sports or celebrate the spirit of honest competition. Despite all the bad news, the stories of the dedicated amateur athletes who work hard for a chance to take on the world is what really matters. Athletes from here in Eastern Ontario and across the country are getting ready to head south to Rio. And when the moment comes, when the competition begins, they will inspire us. The look of enthusiasm and pure joy on the face of Rosie MacLennan, Canada’s flag bearer at the Olympics, momentarily outshines any negative aspects of the international competition that now features all the angst revolving around banning Russian athletes for illegal drug use. So does the attitude of our Valley’s favourite runner, Melissa Bishop, whose unbridled joy (“I’m going to Rio,” she exclaimed as she won her qualifying race) can’t help but make Canadians, especially those from the rural areas, proud. And then there’s the excitement of Dunrobin canoeist Cameron Smedley, who overcame the disappointment of being a last minute cut from Canada’s team for the London Olympics, to persevere and earn a berth four years later. MacLennan, Bishop, Smedley: their efforts and emotions – along with the determination and commitment of their fellow Olympians – will cross the finish line way ahead of the intrigue and frustration caused by a scandal that athletes have been complaining about for years. Honest athletes can look forward to finally being vindicated and compete in the Olympics the way they should be able to

– on a level playing field. After all of the noise created by so many concerns has died down, athletes will once more find themselves alone with their thoughts, tensing muscles and saying silent prayers as they spend those last few seconds waiting for their turn to test their training and motivation. Any negativity encountered in Rio is just one more hurdle to sail over. The Olympics, throughout history, have featured everything from a showcase for a blossoming Nazi Germany in 1936 to a glimpse of modern terrorism tactics in the Munich massacre during the 1972 Summer Olympics. The human spirit has been forced to wear one worrying set of clothes after another throughout history, but through all of the costume changes the individual athletes still manage to wear their own colours when it’s their time to shine. The Rio Olympics will be no different. Canadian athletes of every stripe will still compete with pride and passion when their moment in the spotlight arrives.
Arnprior hospital takes pride in its food offerings To the Editor:
Lately, attention has come to some area hospitals regarding the meal quality that patients received during their stay at hospital. At Arnprior Regional Health, we are proud to offer our hospital patients the same food as what we serve staff and visitors in our cafeteria and our catered events. Balancing comfort foods with current food trends is important in maintaining patient satisfaction. Providing local fresh fruits and vegetables, home cooked roasts, increasing vegetarian options, whole grains, salads and reducing sugar and fat are some of the ways we strive to meet patient needs and achieve satisfaction. It is critical to provide wholesome, nutritious food to support the health and wellbeing of our patients and customers. In addition, being offered a meal choice at bedside and having it delivered immediately afterwards is comforting for patients.

For example, in reviewing the quality of our coffee and prior to making a change, we conducted a taste test challenge and included our patients and staff. We formed a Menu Planning Committee comprised of the PFAC and an interdisciplinary team of staff members to sample products prior to introducing to the menu. The squirrel that would be a bird When we think of animals that fly, birds immediately come to mind. They are undeniably the masters of flight, using their wings to traverse continents and even oceans. But other animals have also conquered the air. Myriad insects, some with two wings, others with four, have long shed their terrestrial shackles. And bats allow mammals to be included in the airborne category. However, other animals move through the air without the benefit of wings. The other night, highpitched squeaks arose from a tree in our yard. I quietly moved beside the tree from which the sound had arisen. MOUTHFULS OF PEANUTS
Several minutes passed and finally a small form scrambled down the trunk and climbed onto a peanut feeder that hung from a lower branch. The creature took a few mouthfuls of peanuts before it ran back up the tree. A moment later from high up the tree its shadowy form drifted down through the air and over to the base of a nearby tree. The animal scampered up the trunk and a moment later again glided through the air, this time back to the peanut feeder tree. The animal was, of course, a Flying Squirrel. Flying Squirrels do not actually fly.
Michael Runtz Nature’s Way Rather, they glide with the aid of loose skin that lies between their legs. When they take to the air, they stretch out their legs creating a sail with the skin that lies between them. Their journey is silent apart from a soft scratching generated on landing. There are two species of Flying Squirrels in our area. Northern Flying Squirrels are about the size of a Red Squirrel and have a gray base to their belly fur. Southern Flying Squirrels are smaller, about the size of an Eastern Chipmunk, and own belly fur that is pure white to the base. Both species have flat tails that act as rudders, and are strictly nocturnal, spending the day hidden inside tree cavities. Large eyes help them see in dim light and it has been speculated that just like bats they use sonar to help them navigate through the dark. My visitors (three were
coming to the feeder) were Southern Flying Squirrels. They were so approachable that I thought they might take peanuts from my hand, but they did not. One seemed to mistake my leg for a trunk and briefly brushed against it when it glided down from an adjacent tree. Southern Flying Squirrels seem to be expanding their range northward, even appearing in Algonquin Park during years of population peaks, an expansion that has been attributed to global warming. Because Southern Flying Squirrels carry a parasite that is harmless to themselves but fatal to Northern Flying Squirrels, this range expansion may have serious consequences. MICHAEL RUNTZ A couple of evenings ago Flying Squirrels have huge eyes for seeing at night, another unusual sound arose and they possibly use sonar to help them navigate from our backyard. in the dark.
The loose skin that lies between the legs and allows its owner to glide is visible on this Southern Flying Squirrel enjoying a snack of peanuts.
TWO OWLS
Registered Massage Therapy
This one had a rising, raspy quality, and was quickly ascertained to be the begging-for-food cries of a young Barred Owl. It soon became apparent that there were two young owls present. Which may not a good thing for our Southern Flying Squirrels. They just happen to be a favourite meal of Barred Owls! The Nature Number is 613-387-2503; email is mruntz@start.ca.

Humane society accepting walkathon pledges Pledge sheets are now available for the Arnprior District Humane Society’s annual Walk ‘n’ Wash, which will take place at beautiful Robert Simpson Park along the Ottawa River in Arnprior. The walkathon is usually held in mid-June, but was changed due to a conflicting use in the park. Organizers are hoping the new day of Sunday, Sept. 11 will provide slightly cooler weather for walkers.
Participants have their choice between a 2-km or 5-km walking trail that goes along the river and through the majestic Gillies Grove forest. Anyone can participate and you don’t need a dog to join in the fun. This year the humane society is adding a dog wash and grooming area to the walk. After the walk, there will be a barbecue as well as door prizes.
Volunteer dog walkers for the humane society will also showcase some of the dogs that are up for adoption. Registration will start at 10 a.m. and the walk begins at 11 a.m. Pledge forms are available on the website www.arnpriorhumanesociety.ca/event/walk-a-thon-wash-nspa/. The Walk ‘n’ Wash is the society’s largest fundraiser so organizers thank people for their support.

Arnprior is hosting 150 events to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary. Town council learned from a staff report at a recent meeting that Canadians will be celebrating the 1867 formation of Confederation in a variety of ways. “Initiatives are being created on a national, provincial, regional, municipal and community level,” said Lindsay Wilson, the town’s economic development officer. The plan for Arnprior is to take advantage of the many events organizations host every year, and to tie them together with the common theme of Canada’s 150th. It can be anything from a church supper to the Arnprior Fair. In addition, municipal departments will try to host an event every month. Already established events such as Priorpalooza and Concerts in the Park will be incorporated. Wilson is issuing a call this summer for groups to participate. Basic information must be submitted by November to help the town market the events. The idea is to give out ‘passports’ by midDecember and throughout the year. A branded 150th stamp and materials will be given to organizers. Attendees will then get their passport

stamped at every event they attend. They could submit their passport at the end of 2017 for prize draw, along with a prize for most events attended. The idea should cost the town little, mostly a small amount in printing for passports and advertising. Sponsors could chip in to help defray costs, and the federal government is offering grants related to the anniversary. Positive feedback was obtained by the community development advisory committee and council as a whole. “(The) 150 events can build up pretty quickly,” Mayor David Reid said. “I think it’s great, and I’m supportive of it.”

Sexual assault services expanded Number of smoking related fires worries Arnprior fire department
Arnprior area women who have experienced sexual violence anytime throughout their lives will now have more local supports available. The Women’s Sexual Assault Centre of Renfrew County recently applied for and received a grant from the Ontario government’s Innovation Fund to expand its services throughout the county. “The Innovation Fund invests in projects that support survivors who may be at higher risk and require services tailored to their needs,” explained centre communications co-ordinator Jancy Brown. The project, one of just seven funded across Ontario, focuses on offering supports to women living in less accessible parts of the county. “Renfrew County is a large area and women do not always have access

to transportation to receive support in our Pembroke office” Brown said. “This grant allows us to travel to other locations to better meet the needs of women in our community.” The project, which will be operating for the next two years, will offer a variety of services, including weekly one-on-one support to women in the Arnprior, Beachburg, Cobden and Golden Lake communities. As well there will be the opportunity for community members and organizations to host workshops on a variety of topics relevant to survivors and their families. Supports will be available in both English and French. For more information or for support, call the centre at 613-735-5551 or the Support and Crisis Line at 1-800-663-3060.

The bulletin points out that one in 10 smoking fires results in injury or death, the average dollar loss per smoking fire is $37,000 and 65 per cent of smoking fires are caused by improper discarding of smoking materials. It features several suggestions for preventing smoking fires: • encourage smokers to smoke outside; • do not extinguish cigarettes in plant pots, which may contain a mixture of peat moss, shredded wood and bark that can easily ignite; • never smoke in bed; • use large, deep ashtrays that cannot be knocked over; • empty ashes into a metal container - not the garbage can – and put it outside; • if people have been smoking in your home, check behind chair and sofa cushions for cigarette butts before going to bed. The fire department also reminds homeowners to install smoke alarms on every storey of their houses and outside all sleeping areas. It also stresses that alcohol and smoking is a dangerous mix and a factor in many fires. For more information, call the Arnprior fire department at 613-623-4231, ext. 2 or visit www.ontario.ca/firemarshal.

Current statistics for Ontario indicate that smoking is the number one cause of fatal home fires. The Arnprior Fire Department find this concerning as the provincial statistics align with trends that it has been monitoring locally, notes fire prevention/protection officer Cory Nicholas. Statistics from the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal and Emergency Management (OFMEM) indicates that smoking accounts for one in four home fire fatalities and eight per cent of all home fires in the province. The data comes from an historical database that contains reports filed by all Ontario fire departments on every fire call they attend (fires and non-fires) dating back to 1983. The information can be viewed in many ways by province, municipality, over time, at specific types of occupancies, ignition sources, and even by injuries or fatalities. Examining trends over time allows fire services to direct fire education and prevention measures to areas that may pose a more significant risk, says Nicholas. In response to the concern about smokingrelated fires, the Arnprior fire department is distributing a public service bulletin entitled ‘Butt out smoking fires’.

Don’t go chasing Pokemon near hydro dams, stations: OPG Don’t go seeking Pokémon near Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) hydro dams and stations if you value your safety. That’s the advice of OPG leading up to the long weekend as the Pokémon Go craze has gamers seeking the critters in strange places, sometimes putting themselves in danger. In a news release this week, OPG notes the Civic holiday long weekend can be a dan-
gerous one for recreationalists if they get too close to power installations. It urges people to bey the signs, booms, buoys and barriers and stay clear of hydro dams and stations. “Many have heard about or even played the highly popular Pokémon Go game,” said Ted Gruetzner, OPG’s vice president of corporate relations and communications.
“Tracking Pikachu or Jigglypuff might be fun, just don’t do it near any of our generating stations or dams.” OPG owns and operates 65 hydroelectric generating stations and 240 dams across the province, including several on the Ottawa and Madawaska rivers. In areas surrounding these stations, changing water levels and strong undertows

WATER RESTRICTIONS
The Watering Restrictions By-law 04-14 is designed to regulate and control the usage of water, within the Almonte Ward, in the hot summer months. Between May 1st and September 30th each year there are limitations on who can water and at what time. Odd number houses may water on odd calendar days and even numbered houses may water on even numbered days. Watering may occur between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. each day and from only one connection. Midday is the hottest time of the day and the water is more likely to be wasted through evaporation when watering at this time. Watering from more than one connection simply uses too much water at once. A significant amount of new grass or sod is exempted from these provisions for one week. Any other violations of the by-law may result in a fine. Municipal staff will be enforcing the Watering Restrictions.

Eganville’s Melissa Bishop wins 800-m race to earn her spot at Rio Tiffany Lepack
tlepack@metroland.com
The Ottawa Valley will have a special reason to tune into the Rio Summer Olympics. Eganville’s Melissa Bishop has made the Canadian Olympic team and will be competing in the 800-m on Aug. 17 and 18, and hopefully in the final on Aug. 20. The 27-year-old also competed in the 2012 Olympics and is looking forward to the games. “It’s a huge honour to wear the maple leaf and represent Canada,” said Bishop. “You want to do well. Every time I get the uniform it is something special.” Bishop won the Canadian 800-m Championship on July 10 in Edmonton with a recording breaking time of 1:59:32.
The previous Canadian record was 1:59:46. Then on Friday, she broke her own Canadian record in the 800m at the TrackTown Classic with a time of 1:57:52. “It’s all been very exciting, I don’t think I have come down from the high,” said Bishop. She had a number of family members supporting her during the Canadian finals. “It was nice to have my family there,” said Bishop. “It’s exciting for them too because they have witnessed me on every high and low on this journey.”\ She is very grateful for them being there. “A big thank you to them, I really appreciate all their support.” She also wants to send a thank you out to all of her fans in the Ot-
tawa Valley. “I have seen all of the messages on social media and I do appreciate all of the support.” She knows the Valley is behind her and knows they will be cheering her on. “I can’t wait to see the Ottawa Valley spirit,” said Bishop. “In 2012 it was something else.” She is relieved she has secured her spot on Team Canada. “I was so focused on the national championship because nothing was set in stone until I won that race and punched that ticket,” said Bishop. The final race didn’t go exactly how she thought it would would. “I hadn’t planned for such a fast race,” said Bishop. “My coach (Dennis Fairall) had set out a strict race plan. It was

nity.” Her coach has progressive supranuclear
palsy, a degenerative condition that has no cure. “He will be in Rio with me,” said Bishop. “His disease is affecting his balance and his speech. We still talk on a daily basis and we are adjusting.” She hasn’t finalized her training plans with Fairall just yet. She is still out West and will be meeting with him when she arrives back in Windsor. She is focused on her main goal. “If I can make the final, anything can happen,” said Bishop. “I just need to perform my best that day.” She says she is aware of a lot of the concerns surrounding the Rio games, including the Zika virus. “It is a concern, my fiancé and I spoke with the team doctor and we
are taking all of the necessary precautions, my clothes will be treated in repellent and we will be carrying DEET,” said Bishop. But she is determined to go to the Olympics. “They don’t want me to give this up, it is the epitome of why we train,” said Bishop. “I don’t want to give up the opportunity to represent my country when we can take every precaution.” Bishop is building on her success from last year when she won gold in the 800-m at the Pan American Games in Toronto and she also went to the IAAF World Championships where she won the silver medal, breaking a 14-yearold record to become the first Canadian to go below one minute, 58 seconds with a time of 1:57:52.

Summertime is never better than seen through the eyes of children – or a children’s author perhaps. It takes a unique talent to really fire the imaginations of young people with a good story. So, just imagine what it would be like to listen to a great storyteller and nature lover speak about the experiences of summer, all outside in a beautiful wilderness setting. On Sunday, Aug. 7, local children’s author Jan Andrews will be at the High Lonesome Nature Reserve to read from her popular book, ‘The Twelve Days of Summer’. This whimsical and beautifully illustrated story is based on the popular Christmas carol and guides the listener through the life cycle of plants and animals commonly seen in the summer in this area. It’s aimed at children from pre-school to Grade 2, but appeals to the child in all of us. If ever there was a book that grew out of our landscape it is this one. In fact, that song sparrow nest that appears at the beginning, those three ruffed grouse that strut their stuff, the seven moles a-digging, the 10 crows a-cawing, along with all the other inhabitants of the tale’s unfolding, are inhabitants of Andrews’ own backyard. She lives down the end of a road on a Mississippi Mills lake and loves it. She spends her working days by a window looking out over the water. In that lovely venue she recently created the young adult novel, ‘The Silent Summer of Kyle McGinley’, and a folktale collection, ‘When Apples Grew Noses and White Horses Flew. Tales of Ti-Jean’, was the winner of the Ontario Library Association’s Forest of Reading Silver Birch Award. She’s also known for such classics as ‘Very Last First Time’, ‘The Auction’ and ‘Stories at the Door’.
Andrews delights in meeting young readers and sharing her books with them; letting them into the secrets of the stories’ creation, adding fascinating details to enhance the words on the page. She also happens to be one of Canada’s best loved storytellers. The High Lonesome Nature Reserve, conserved forever by the Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust, is the perfect location to meet with Andrews. Surrounded by 200 acres of woods, meadows and ponds, the readings will inspire you and the children to stay for your own exploration of the trails to find those sparrows, crows or grouse – or see what other interesting treasures Nature might reveal to inquisitive young people. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. with the reading and discussion starting at 10. For those interested, Andrews will have her book available for purchase. Cold drinks and cookies will be served. Donations will be appreciated to help MMLT conserve and make available for community enjoyment wonderful natural lands such as this. This event is part of the MMLT Wild Child Initiative, an effort to reconnect people of all ages with nature through enjoyable activities in a wilderness setting. High Lonesome Nature Reserve is located at 867 Carbine Rd. in the Pakenham Hills. To reach High Lonesome, take County Road 29 to Pakenham Village and turn onto Waba Road. Continue west for 2.9 km, turn left on Barr Side Road and travel for 1.6 km. Take the first left at Carbine Road and drive four km to 867 Carbine Rd. and you have arrived. River Town Saints nominated for major Canadian award Tiffany Lepack
tlepack@metroland.com
Arnprior’s Chris McComb was sitting at his house in the Prior on July 13, eating his breakfast. In an instant his life changed when he found out his band River Town Saints were nominated for the Canadian Country Music Association’s Rising Star award. “I got an email from our manager and it said good morning rising star nominees,” said McComb on a break from the recording studio on July 15. “Reading that was crazy.” River Town Saints is a new country band based in Ottawa with McComb on guitar and drummer Jordan Potvin both hailing from Arnprior. “It’s pretty unreal to think that in less than a year after releasing A Little But Goes A Long Way, we would be nominated for a CCMA award!” said Potvin. Also nominated for the award are Alee, Cold Creek County, David James and The Washboard Union. McComb calls the nomination surreal. “I heard them talk about it on the radio and people have been congratulating us,” said McComb. “This is all happening so fast.” He gives a lot of credit to Open Road Recordings, RGK Entertainment. “They have really pushed and developed us,” said McComb of the two agencies. And he also gives a shout out to Cana-
dian Country Radio. “My grandma was calling in requesting the songs and now people beside people we know are calling in requesting the songs,” said McComb. “Now people are calling in for us after they see us perform.” McComb has been working in cover bands and writing music for the last six years and never thought he would get to the national level. “It’s great, it’s so surreal,” said McComb. “It is certainly fantastic to play across the country. We were playing last week in Prince Edward Island and the fans were singing along having a blast.” They played Rock The Park Music Festival in London on July 14 and were one of three opening acts for country music super star Brad Paisley. “It was huge, he’s a super cool guy,” said McComb. “It’s very humbling, we go up and do our thing and then more people fill in when Brad comes on. It’s humbling to see how his people work and hopefully we can get to there at some point.” McComb says he loves living in Arnprior and the support the band is receiving in his hometown. “I hope we can play there sometime soon.” He humbly admits he tries to down play his new found celebrity status. “If I’m in Arnprior buying gas or getting a pizza people come up to me and I try and downplay it,” said McComb. “People are

Prior Chest Nuts win survivor challenge at dragon boat festival Jessica Cunha
jessica.cunha@metroland.com
The Prior Chest Nuts put the paddle to the metal to claim the Breast Cancer Survivors Challenge, a 200-metre dragon boat race on Saturday, July 23. With a time of 0.58.22, the Arnprior team edged past Ottawa’s Busting Out to finish 0.0.59 seconds ahead in the friendly – but hard-fought – competition. Busting Out took the honour at last year’s inaugural Arnprior Dragon Boat Festival. The two teams are composed of breast cancer survivors; the ‘Prior’s boat draws from the areas of Renfrew, Almonte, West Carleton and Kanata, while the members of Busting Out come from all communities across Ottawa. Following the race, the two dragon boats drifted into the dock to take part in a flower ceremony to honour those who are fighting, have fought or will fight breast cancer. “This flower ceremony and song are dedicated to the spirit of survivors, dragon boating and to those who ride the dragon with the angels,” said Wanda Monuk, Prior Chest Nuts team co-ordinator and Kinburn resident. “The flower ceremony has become an important tradition in breast cancer survivor dragon boat racing. This ceremony gives us an opportunity to acknowledge breast cancer, breast health awareness and dragon boat racing. Survivor teams come together in the water to symbolize that together we are strong.” Side by side in their dragon boats, the teams’ members raised carnations in the air and waved them back and forth as the song “Take it away” – recorded by a member of the Kingston Chestmates (a breast cancer JESSICA CUNHA/METROLAND survivor dragon boat team) – played over the water. As The Prior Chest Nuts edge ahead of Busting Out during the Breast Cancer Survivor 200-metre Challenge dragon boat race on the music came to a close, everyone tossed their flowers Saturday, July 23. With a time of 0.58.22, the Arnprior team edged past Ottawa’s Busting Out to finish .59 seconds ahead in in the water. the friendly – and hard-fought – competition. Fifteen teams, plus two youth boats, took part in the annual Arnprior Dragon See BREAST, page 26

Breast cancer survivor teams seek new dragon boat members Continued from page 25
The Chest Nuts are always looking for new members to join and welcome breast cancer survivors – both men and women – who want to test the waters. “There’s no cap, no tryouts,” said Monuk. “You don’t have to have skill. You just have to come out. There’s lots of support for the sport and for survivors.” The team practices twice a week on White Lake until September. For more, visit priorchestnuts.com. Busting Out welcomes new members as well and will begin hosting Open Paddle Nights starting Aug. 16. FESTIVAL YOUTH CHAMPS
Fifteen teams, plus two youth boats, took part in the annual Arnprior Dragon Boat Festival, held at Robert Simpson Park. The youth teams – Arnprior Warriors versus the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa – took part in a friendly 200-metre race. The Warriors finished with a time of 1.07.07, while the BGCO completed the race in 1.23.50.

A special thanks to Ruth More, Joyce and Bill Lowry and Marjorie and Chris Bryant who came to the house the day of visitation to set out and serve a lovely meal for Mum’s family and friends. Barb Dillon and Pauline Nolan were part of Mum’s extended family as well as a vital part of her support system. Thank you Barb and Pauline. Thank you to all the wonderful and compassionate health care providers who came to help Mum continue to live at home. Over the years, Mum had many great caregivers provided by several agencies such as; Red Cross, To Care For, CCAC and Bayshore Home Health Care. Although Mum looked forward to seeing everyone, she especially liked to see her regular girls who she had got to know very well. People such as Nancy, Judy, Gail and Myrna. We would like to say a special thank you to Kathy Kubisheski who was Mum’s very first caregiver and came to the home to provide care twice a week for many years. Mum formed a special bond with Laura Rutherford and Kelly Cavanagh. We will always remember their loving and compassionate care of Mum during her final days. We also want to thank the nursing palliative care team from Bayshore Home Health Care for assisting Mum and supporting us during the last evening and night while Mum prepared and then passed on to a new place.Thank you to Dr. Christine Deschenes for her loving care of Mum for many years and to Dr. Heather Abramenko for giving guidance to the palliative care team during Mum’s last hours. Although Mum rarely needed to be hospitalized she did spend time in the Almonte Hospital twice during the last year of her life. Thank you to all the Almonte hospital staff for their care of Mum. We would like to thank Rev Jim Wood for leading the funeral service and providing a heartfelt message of hope for us all; a special thank you to Don Gilmore, Mum’s nephew, who not only took us down memory lane but gave wonderful spiritual guidance and comfort. Thank you to Ron Horton for his beautiful rendering of the hymn - In the Garden. A special thank you to Joanne Gilmore, Mum’s sister in law, who arranged to have the interment service at Horton Cemetery conducted by the Renfrew Salvation Army. Mum, as a child, attended the Renfrew Salvation Army and the circle was completed by Majors Janice and Rocky Bishop who delivered a beautiful interment ceremony. Thank you to the Majors and to the members of the Salvation Army who served a much appreciated luncheon afterwards. Thank you to the CR Gamble Funeral Home for their guidance. We know Mum would be very pleased that her cherished grandchildren Tracy, Alana and Brad, her grandson in law Phil, and her two friends Barb and Pauline were able to carry her to her final resting place beside her beloved husband Edgar who passed away on December 24, 1968 and her oldest son Ronald who passed away on July 25th. 1985. Tip #1 - Protection from Heat in Cars: Please use common sense and take your pets with you, or make sure that adequate ventilation exists when and where appropriate. Bear in mind that cars can heat up quickly, even with the windows partially open. Tip #2 - Proper Outdoor Housing and Water: If dogs or cats are kept outdoors, please keep them in a shaded area with adequate water. Make certain pets can’t get tangled up that might endanger them or restrict their movement. Tip #3 - Protection from OverExertion: Over-exertion resulting in problems could occur when jogging or engaging in other activities. On hotter days, monitor your pet’s activity and be careful to not overexert them. Watch for signs of heat stress, excessive panting, disorientation, staring or anxious expression and weakness. Bring your pet to a cool area, gradually lower your pet’s temperature by immersing his/ her paws in cold water or hosing him/her down and call your veterinarian immediately. Tip #4 - Feet Protection: In the summer, asphalt can burn your pet’s paws so keep to the sidewalk or grass. Tip #5 - Swimming: Most dogs enjoy swimming, but some cannot swim, and others may dislike the water. Be conscious of your dog’s preferences and skills before trying to make him swim. If you’re swimming for the first time with your dog, start in shallow water and coax him in by calling his name. Encourage him with toys or treats. Or, let him follow another experienced dog he is friendly with. Never throw your dog into the water. Don’t let your dog overdo it, swimming is very hard work and he may tire quickly. If you have your own pool, make sure your dog knows where the stairs or ladder is located. Be sure that pool covers are firmly in place; dogs have been known to slip in under openings in the covers and drown. Never leave your dog unattended in the water.
Tip #6 - Boating: If you take to the open waters with fido, make sure that your pet is wearing an approved floatation device. Some dogs do not know how to swim. Cold water can be a shock to the system tightening up muscles making it harder to swim and stay afloat. Dogs can also get caught up in seaweed. Tip #7 - Safety in Travel: Traveling by car, keep your dog cool in the car by putting icepacks in his crate. Make sure the crate is well-ventilated. Put a sunshade on your car windows. Bring along fresh water and a bowl, and a tarp or tent so you can set up a shady spot when you stop. Keep a spray bottle filled with water to spray your dog to cool him down. Don’t leave your pet alone in an RV. A dog’s safety should not depend on the air conditioning and generator systems in an RV or motor home since these devices can malfunction with tragic results. Tip #8 - Parasite Prevention: Check with your vet to see if your pets should be taking heartworm prevention medication. Heartworm disease, which is transmitted by a bite from an infected mosquito, can be fatal if not treated. Both dogs and cats are at increased risk of contracting heartworm during the summer. It would also be highly recommended to protect your pets from ticks Tip #9 - Plan Ahead for Summer Vacations: If you’re not taking your dog or cat with you, arrange for the proper care with individuals you know and trust or with a facility that is reputable. This will protect your pets from careless or irresponsible individuals and bring about much peace of mind. Tip #10 – Common Sense: Heat stroke, accidents and even death can be prevented. When out and about on a hot summer day just be aware of the inherent dangers. Plan accordingly and stay safe. Ian owns and operates Wags & Whiskers Dog and Cat Grooming and Puppy Kindergarten at 118 John St. North Arnprior. Museum summer camp The Arnprior and District Museum has plenty of room for children ages 6 to 12 in its Summer Camp program. The camp runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. with a different theme every day including detective training, mad science and voyager travels. The camp costs $7 per day. Left, campers pretend to wrap each other up like mummies at the first camp, which had an Indiana Jones theme. Below, campers make paper crowns at the second summer camp, which had a Royals theme day. For more information, call the museum at 613-623-4902.

Seniors at Home
We (Seniors at Home) love the communities we serve and I love the colour Yellow. Even though our Yellow Envelope Campaign did not get delivered until June 14 (a few weeks later than last year), we have received $16,003 in donations. We are very pleased and continue to be amazed by the generosity and support of our neighbours. Our goal for 2016 is $30,000. We have two full wheels painted yellow ($7,500 raised represents one wheel).
We need four wheels to ‘Keep the Wheels Turning’ on our Para Transit Care Coach. We are now working towards the third wheel and confident that we will raise the full $30,000 so all four wheels will be turning – turning to assist and give independence to so many. The ‘Yellow Envelope MailOut to Keep the Wheels Turning’ campaign raises money to ensure the care coach remains on the road and continues to be able to provide independence to those residents of Arnprior, McNab-Braeside, and areas of West Carleton including Fitzroy Harbour, Galetta, Kin-
burn, Woodlawn and Dunrobin who count on the service provided. Our Para Transit Care Coach is the only specialized transportation service for persons of all ages operating in Arnprior and McNabBraeside, and it relies totally on local fundraising. Thank you to local businesses for their donations received: Emmanuel Anglican Church, Mather Insurance and Real Estate, Claybank Plumbing, Arnprior Lionnettes, Wes’ Chips, and Blue Systems by Robell. Last but not least, thank you to the165 families who have returned their yellow envelope with their
donation in support of the 2016 campaign. Thank you to John O’Neill of Royal Lepage, PCS Peter’s Computer Solutions, Mulvihill & Murray, P38 Energy, McDonald’s Restaurant-Arnprior and Reid Bros for their financial support in producing the campaign mail-out. Without their support, reaching our goal would be more difficult. If you have not done so yet, please consider returning the yellow envelope either by mail or drop-off at our office, at 106 McGonigal St. West, Arnprior. For more information, please contact our development co-ordinator Liz
Wall at 613-623-7981, ext. 25. Any and all amounts are welcomed as we look to reach the remaining amount ($13,997) of our 30,000 goal. Thank you Reid Bros., Clancy’s Drug Store, Sandvik, Arnprior Builders Supply/Rona, W.O. Stinson & Son, Canadian Tire-Arnprior, Island View Retirement Suites, Jack & Faith’s No Frills, Arnprior Lions and Arnprior Rotary Club for their annual sponsorship of the Para Transit Care Coach. Emerson tests out Mary’s dislike for mud pout My dislike for fish, I was sure, would last me a lifetime, and it all had to do with my fear of the many catfish, which we called mud pout, found in great abundance in the Bonnechere River. They were the ugliest creatures I had ever clapped eyes on in my life, and often found their way to our supper table, where, when laid out on the platter, I wouldn’t dare cast an eye, knowing perfectly well, I would be sick as a dog at the very sight. Mother knowing how I hated mud pout, always let me have a boiled egg and toast instead. My three brothers would wander down to the river this time of year, and about once a week, would bring these ugly fish to the chopping block behind the silo, and would have a pail full, ready for Mother to cook up for supper. Emerson knew how I hated mud

pout. If I was anywhere near the chopping block, he would hook his finger into the gill of one, and wave it in my direction, smacking his lips and yelling, “Still alive and kickin’, see Mary?” And then he would add, “Can’t wait to sink my teeth into this one.” My stomach would do a flip-flop as I pictured Mother’s big, black iron fry pan, and vision the fish, which to me, seemed to squirm while being cooked. Emerson said the reason they moved in the pan was because they were still alive, which distressed me
and put the thought of the ugly mud pout out of my mind. Usually my brothers complained about going to bed. They always wanted to stay up for just a few minutes longer, but that night we all climbed the stairs early, hoping to escape the blistering heat of the kitchen. I wasn’t long crawling into my bed, which I shared with my sister Audrey. And then my feet touched something ... wet and slimy, and I flew out of bed as fast as a bolt of lightning, threw the sheet back, and there, right where my feet landed, was a dead mud pout. I screamed bloody murder; EmInterested in an electronic version erson was rolling on the floor in hysterics, and my sister Audrey was of Mary’s books? Mary Cook’s Memories
even further. The day my hate for mud pout was stretched to the limit was when, once again, a big catch was ready for the fry pan. The brothers had cleaned them and Emerson brought them to the kitchen in a pail. I ate my boiled egg and toast with my eyes half closed, dreading the look of the platter of fish in front of Father’s plate. I couldn’t wait until supper was over, the kitchen redded up, and the table cleared. The smell of fried fish hung in the air like gossamer clouds, and the kitchen was beastly hot as well, to add to my misery. Father had peeled off his plaid shirt, and Emerson went upstairs and came down in his underwear. I couldn’t wait to crawl into the fresh cool flour bag sheets and hopefully feel a bit of night air come in the window near the bed,
laughing his head off when Mother reached the back bedroom door. She grabbed Emerson by the ear, hauled him downstairs, and ordered him to sleep on the couch in the kitchen and told him to get rid of the mud pout first. It didn’t sound like much of a punishment to me, but Emerson was at least a good foot longer than the couch, it was rock hard, and the kitchen was still as hot as a furnace. I asked Audrey to change the sheets, even though they had been put on fresh that day, and I vowed, even then I could smell mud pout. I finally went to sleep. My dreams that night were of the chopping block, and the ugly mud pout. And long into the night, I thought I could hear Emerson downstairs in the kitchen, laughing his head off!
