MUNICIPAL ELECTION

LYNCH, ARMSDEN, EDGE, BRAY ACCLAIMED IN ARNPRIOR, MCNAB/BRAESIDE MUNICIPAL, SCHOOL RACES JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com UPDATE: Dan Lynch has been acclaimed as Arnprior's county councillor representative, but 11 candidates have filed for five councillor positions.

Lynch, a current Arnprior councillor, was unchallenged for the county council (formerly reeve) post when nominations ended at 2 p.m. Friday, July 27. Current Arnprior reeve Walter Stack is running to replace Mayor Da-

vid Reid who is retiring. He is being opposed by newcomer Gabriel Flowers in the Oct. 22 election. Incumbent Lynn Grinstead and first-time candidates Lisa McGee and Marc Bissonnette joined the councillor race on the final day of nominations.

Also entering the race in the last week were Danny Martin, Chris Toner, Geoffrey White and Andrew Fogarasi. Earlier, incumbents Ted Strike, Frank Dugal and Tom Burnette and former school trustee Glenn Miller had filed to run for Arnprior councillor. In McNab/Braeside, former council candidate Lou Laventure filed July 24 to run against incumbent mayor Tom Peckett. Two more councillor candidates filed Friday just before the 2 p.m. deadline ensuring there would be a race election day Oct. 22.

The five candidates running for three councillor positions are Shawn Regier, Oliver Jacob, former councillor Robert Campbell, and incumbents Heather Lang and Scott Brum Brian Armsden returns unopposed for a second term as McNab/Braeside deputy mayor. Current councillor Mark MacKenzie is not running again. All candidates will become official when certified by 4 p.m. Monday, July 30. The new Renfrew County District School Board trustee for Arnprior and McNab-Braeside is student activist Nic Edge of Braeside. He was the only candidate to replace Kim Dunsmoor-Lough who is not running again.

Edge, who is an outgoing student trustee on the school board, graduated in June from Arnprior District High School where he was active on student council (serving as prime minister in the last school year) and in several causes such as anti-bullying and relay for life. Andy Bray, who has been a trustee for 34 years, has been acclaimed again to sit on Renfrew County Catholic District School Board to represent Arnprior, McNab-Braeside and Great Madawaska. Colette Stitt has been returned by acclamation as this areas's trustee on the French public school board. Robert Lemelin has been acclaimed as the area's trustee of the French Catholic board.

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com Few, if any, Arnprior candidates have volunteered their time more than Chris Toner. Be it service groups such as the Optimist Club and the Masonic Lodge, to kids' sports like hockey, Toner is hands-on when it comes to shaping the town he grew up in. And now he wants to bring positive change at the council table. "I'm excited about trying to make a change," Toner said. "This town is a great place to live. I can certainly help to make it a better place and to bring people together." The small-business owner with three children, 10, 13, and 16, and husband of local teacher Vicki, has seen much positive feedback on social media. He considers himself a people person who works collabo-

ratively with others. He often repeats a desire to "bring people together." However, it was a negative experience with town hall that finally convinced him to run. The Optimists' plan - with the Sens organization and Sullivan's - to build a four-season facility on Meehan Street met with resistance from town staff. Despite an offer to cover all startup costs, the town pushed for a location near Nick Smith Centre. He understands the town would assume maintenance costs, but indicated it was an insult to turn down the first choice of those raising funds. Besides that, the last few terms have been "fine" with necessary spending on the water plants, service pipes, and a "fantastic" downtown. That kind of spending doesn't win as many votes as, say, a play structure, but Toner said it is the right thing to do.

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com

CHRIS TONER The landscaping company owner favours growth and finding ways to accommodate newcomers. He also favours diversity on council. While retired men dominate small-town Ontario municipalities, Toner has young children who use different services and have different needs. He vows to actively seek and implement ideas from children and others, such as seniors, at the beginning stages of major projects such as the waterfront rehabilitation or even playgrounds. "I'd like to see as much collaboration as possible,"

Downtown revitalization and Sunday markets are amazing, Geoffrey White said, but more is needed for the residents of Arnprior. White, 33, grew up in town attending Walter Zadow and Arnprior District High School. Then he left because "there wasn't much going on for young people." He agrees with mayoral candidate Gabriel Flowers that more programs should be offered to young people. But he is also the first candidate to tell Metroland Media that housing, including affordable apartments, is becoming a pressing issue. He is running for council to bring more condos and another seniors' residence to Arnprior. "There is absolutely some progress that's been made," White said. "I'm throwing my hat in the ring

to see if we can get even more progressive." White has also counted the number of empty storefronts, saying there are nine in the downtown core. He wants an end to a policy that sees landlord tax breaks - up to one-third - for vacant properties. It doesn't encourage them to find tenants. On a related issue, waiving the business licence fee for startups would stimulate the local economy, he said. "I know some people that had great ideas but no startup money," he said. "We have to do something about that." White works from home for Measurable Building Solutions. He is an energy efficiency project co-ordinator specializing in LED lighting. Both topics have been discussed at some length over the past few years, particularly when it comes to Nick Smith Centre and streets

throughout town. Asked if he is aware of issues the current council has dealt with, White said no. "But I consider that a good thing. I'm about the issues of the people, not the ones dealt with at council," he said. "I'm more interested in what people are dealing with in town." White said more activities for seniors are needed, and the self-described political centrist wants to make sure fees at Nick Smith are not too high for users. "My biggest focus is to bring concerns to town hall," he said. "I want to go out and talk to people."

TASTE OF THE VALLEY GIVES HERBFEST, WABA MUSEUM BIG BOOST JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com There was a traffic jam in normally sleepy White Lake Sunday. The partnership between Renfrew County's Taste of the Valley and the Herbfest along with the sunny weather helped attract a large crowd to the Waba Cottage Museum and Gardens. The parking lot was full and cars were parked along Burnstown and MacLachlan roads. The significant increase in the number and scope of the vendors, largely due to the involvement of Taste of the Valley, was frequently noted by visitors. Both first-time visitors and vendors were also effusive in their praise of the Waba gardens site. "This is fabulous to have all these local artisans and farmers here selling their own products," said Terri Loiacono, a first-timer at the event. She said she hasn't seen such an impressive display of local products since her Montreal days. "And the prices are reasonable," she said. "This is amazing for White Lake." Freda Mallory and Carol Theriault, members of a group of four women from Brockville attending Herbfest for the first time, expressed delight with the variety of vendors and attractions at the event as well as admiring the beauty and atmosphere of the site. Nathan and Katie Gervais, the new owners of the Almonte area Herb Garden the location for Herbfest's first 20 years, said Waba's gardens and heritage buildings make it an exceptional venue for the festival. "We've met many interesting people here," said Nathan, adding there appeared to be a lot of visitors from Ottawa and the Carleton Place-Almonte area. Jonathan DeGroot of Wilno's DeGroots Farms and manager of the Barry's Bay Farmer's Market said it is gratifying to see so many people interested in local produce

One of DeGroot's garlic customers was Hannah Rauhanen, Nepean campus manager of the Institute of Holistic Nutrition. She said she usually stays in her own booth, but the Waba garden site "is so beautiful, I just had to walk around and see the other vendors." While he didn't have any firm attendance numbers, McNab/ Braeside Mayor Tom Peckett said it appears there was a "huge" turnout. The partnership between Herbfest and Taste in the Valley proved to make the event "a fantastic success for the township," he said, noting that it attracted a lot of people from other areas. That helped raise the profile of Waba Cottage Museum and Gardens as well as the township, he said. Volunteers deserve a great deal of credit for making the gardens so attractive for the event, he added. Peckett said the township has had plenty of activities this summer to entertain residents and visitors. Next up is the second in the free concert in the park series, with local musicians playing at Burnstown Beach this Thursday, Aug. 2 at 7 p.m.

NEAT'S PIZZA: THE BEST LIVE MUSIC TO FAMILY'S DINNER DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com The eternal and pressing debate in Arnprior and Renfrew: Mama Rosa or Jim's, Flamingo or Renfrew Pizzeria, respectively - which has the best pizza in town? Not to challenge the parameters of the debate too much - or the geography,

for that matter. But how about looking outside the (delivery) box a little. The standard pizza joints have their place, no doubt. They offer a dependable pie that won't challenge the balance of the cosmos. Still... kinda like getting combo A with an extra egg roll. You reach a certain age and variety along with decent ingredients matters.

The debate got me thinking, which is easier to do when driving. I landed in pretty little Burnstown, at Neat Coffee Shop. Neat is well revered throughout the region for promoting live music, from the biggest bands to indie startups. And that is admirable. Live music is one of the great blessings in life. Not unlike a decent cup of coffee. Or, for that matter, artisan pizza.

Neat does all three with care and craftsmanship. To see a Neat pizza pulled from a wood-fired stove, with quality ingredients in surprising arrangements, is truly a thing of beauty. My order, the Ziggy Stardust - simple tomato sauce, tasty olive oil, mozza with bite and fresh basil from the on-site garden was a hit single with the family. So we ordered a followup. The Jack White has red sauce, sausage with an array of spices, whole roasted garlic (not recommended on a first date), red onions and mozzarella. It was even better. But the leader of the

Neat's pizza quickly reached the top of our family's Billboard chart.

Next time we'll get the Weird Al (pesto, brie, sliced pear and arugula) and the John Lennon, a chicken and green olive ditty. Chef - play us another pie!

JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com A group of volunteers upgraded the main trail and carved out a new one at Alexander Stewart Provincial Park July 27. Ontario Parks warden Tim Courtney, who led the effort, said the work bee is a great start to ensuring the little-known park becomes a destination for nature-lovers from all over the area. "We've been kicking the can on this for three years," he said. "I'm glad it's finally happening." The park is close enough to Ottawa to become a major destination for birders and other nature-lovers, Courtney said. He praised the Township of McNab/Braeside and the Arnprior Fish and Game Conservation Club for partnering in the plan to make the park off Russett Drive and Mill Ridge Road more accessible. The aim of the low impact trail enrichment project is to "let folks see the

park safely and use it for outdoor education" without adversely impacting its biological footprint, he said. "It's beautiful back there." Courtney expressed optimism that students from nearby McNab Public School will be able to use the park for outdoor education, snowshoeing, and crosscountry running and skiing. He sees the park as similar to Petawawa Terrace Provincial Park, which has proved a valuable resource for students in that area. Courtney said he will reach out to the Algonquin College forestry program to ask them to ID certain trees in the park. The park contains an interesting blend of tree species and there may even be a rare blue beech there, he said. He also envisions a blog where people can share their experiences in the park. "It's a great fit for our focus on outdoor education, especially for youth," said

John Carter/Metroland Volunteers Paul Wideman, Cathy Morris and Heather Lang rake the gravel just deposited on the Alexander Stewart Provincial Park main trail by Eric Smith on his tractor. A dozen people took part in a work party July 27 to improve the trails in the "hidden gem" of a park off Mill Ridge Road in McNab-Braeside. Arnprior Fish and Game Club director Eric Smith, who along with president Bill Skinner took part in the work bee. By making the park accessible to students and providing identification boards, "we will be encouraging people to respect nature and learn about it," he said. "We want them to use it but not abuse it." McNab-Braeside Mayor Tom Peckett said he hoped Friday's work bee will provide the momentum to turn the park into a major attrac-

tion. "It's a great place for people to come to enjoy nature and learn from it," he said. The township would like to see it be made accessible to all nonmotorized traffic, including the disabled, he added. The work bee was buoyed by the donation of two tandem loads of gravel from Elm Enterprises and cedar logs from Todd Sparling and McNab/Braeside firefighters. Another work bee will likely held in the park in late August or early September.

PAVED PARKING LOT AN ELECTION ISSUE There is much to mull over at the local level before voters go to the polls on Oct. 22. Among the first considerations is to evaluate how the current council in Arnprior is performing. Too often citizens assume the existing bunch deserves to be tossed out. Politics is about making difficult decisions; bridges will inevitably be burned; political lives tend to flame out early. However, it is our assessment, having a reporter at almost every regular meeting again this term, that as a whole council did a very good job. Even when it comes to meeting attendance, most scored perfect or near perfect. Tom Burnette was the lowest in 2017, making it to 29 of 36 meetings; and this year too, 13 of 17 as of June 29. That makes it tough on the newbies. This isn't a change election, which is a testament to Mayor David Reid's leadership over the last two terms. And few, if any, newcomers would even consider personal attacks against any opponent. Criticism, small-town style, comes with what is left unsaid. That is hardly campaign material. An approach that has worked in the past is to tie your name to a particular issue. It is fine to be in favour of several things - even banal populism - but being first to a well-thought out, timely issue can be a difference maker. One candidate has done so already. Congratulations to Geoff White for latching onto the need for more apartments. Following a recent apartment fire, many on social media talked of how difficult it is to obtain a rental unit. The municipal government can play a role attracting developers. Another issue we would like to see all candidates support is paving the parking lot at Nick Smith Centre. Staff is planning on it; the $400,000 cost is in the longrange capital forecast for 2020; work could start next year; but who are we kidding? Since the civic centre was built in 1976 there's been talk of paving it. Former recreation director Glenn Arthur would propose it during every budget season. In the end, some on council literally laughed at the notion. Candidates, especially mayoral candidates, should commit to it for several reasons. Most young families that visit our town won't see Robert Simpson or McLean parks. They will only attend sporting events at Nick Smith. Were they to consider moving to Arnprior, a gravel parking lot tells them the town is broke or indifferent to social programs. And they will keep being reminded, because gravel sticks to shoes, is kicked along hallways, chips skate blades, lands on the ice. A paved parking lot reduces maintenance costs, organizes parking stalls, reduces silt and sediment entering storm sewer. It will cost money, yes. If paid for in one year it would mean a 5 per cent tax hike. But staff has a plan to spread it out over several years without taking out a loan. Local Nick Smith users have paid enough taxes over the years. They deserve a paved parking lot.

WHO WE ARE

LETTERS & COMMENTARY IS THERE A BETTER WAY OF EXPANDING GROVE NURSING HOME? To the editor: This is further to the July 19 article "Arnprior to keep bridge widths status quo," which contained a council brief on the subject of my appeal of Bylaw 6814-18. I believe I may safely speak for those who contributed to the Save the Grove committee, many who have passed away, such as Jayne Gillies, Sloan Watters, Barclay Craig, Arnold Muirhead and many more. One half million dollars was raised in this community and all across Canada and council of the day designed the town's Official Plan to protect Gillies Grove and the aquifer fed wet/creek wetland forest on the south border with G. G. The public meeting of April 9 failed to communicate the development of the nursing home would result in clear cutting of seven acres of old-growth hardwood forest and create a second right-of-way extending Norma Street North across the wet/ creek Vydon property zoned R3h. The "h" or holding provisions are designed to protect the Natural Heritage Area Gillies Grove. It is of concern that these two developments will undo the protections in the town's Official Plan which states "wet/creek habitat provides valuable extension and diversity to Grove" and Gillies Grove "is recognized for its ecologi-

cal value." Concern is that expansion in an old growth forest will cut the linkage with the "life giving" wet/creek linkage. This will be the "price" of these developments. As a resident downstream the expanded nursing home coupled with a second right-of-way, as well as potential housing/ apartment construction on the wet/creek property raises the possibility of flooding. Lets not repeat the errors of our neighbours a few kilometres away. Carp River/ Glencairn flooding. This bylaw will extend "nonconforming use" of the province's Comprehensive Zoning Bylaw, undo and nonconform to the town's Official Plan protections that this community and contributors from across Canada worked so hard for over a 12 year period. Is there a better way to expand the nursing home and avoid cutting down seven acres of old growth canopied hardwoods, constructing a second right-of-way and destroying vital linked ecology?

To the editor: I'll never forget, about five years ago, approaching Glenn Arthur who I had never met before saying, "Mr. Arthur, my name is Darrel O'Shaughnessy and I want to organize a Dragon Boat Festival here in Arnprior." I had definitely done some planning ahead of the meeting and was equipped with a potential

program plan, a budget for Year 1, a presentation listing both pros and cons, and most importantly, a real desire to sell the idea. I didn't know really what to expect, but I think, hoped in fact, that I was prepared to meet "The Man." Also, I was concerned, being new to the area, that he may not take me seriously. Well, to my surprise, he looked at me for awhile, sat back in his chair, smiled, that Glenn Arthur smile, you all know it, and said, "Darrel, what a great idea, let's make it happen." I was gobsmacked. Since that time ladies and gentlemen, Glenn Arthur, Archie, Mr. Sport, the King, whatever you may choose to call him, has been a friend to the Dragon Boat community throughout the country, and, I am proud to say, a friend of mine and a great business colleague as well. According to Glenn, sport is for everyone and everyone, in their own way, is an athlete. With Glenn's direction and advice, along with the Town of Arnprior's overwhelming support, our Dragon Boat Festival has doubled, almost tripled in size, and has become an event of choice for Dragon Boaters throughout the country. In addition to that, our festival has helped identify the Greater Arn-

prior Region as a destination of choice in the Ottawa Valley. In fact, we are now even considered an age-friendly community by the Ministry of Senior's Affairs. We all should be so proud and ho-

noured. So ladies and gentlemen, paddles up and stay tuned for next year's Community Challenge Dragon Boat Festival in Arnprior on Saturday, July 20, 2019 - you

will be surprised to say the least. Oh, by the way Glenn, thank you for all your hard work and effort. Darrel O'Shaughnessy Co-chair, Arnprior Dragon Boat Festival

A UNIQUE SPIDER CATCHES THE ATTENTION OF NATURE WRITER MICHAEL RUNTZ MICHAEL RUNTZ Column

When looking for animals I move slowly and quietly. I also constantly watch for movement. When a leaf shifts and there isn't a breath of wind, an animal is behind the scenes. When a dark spot shifts position on a wildflower, something is present on that bloom. But recently it was a lack of movement that alerted me to an animal's presence. I was looking for butterflies in a meadow, carefully scanning flower heads for movement. In particular, I was searching for thumbnail-size butterflies called skippers. As well as being smaller than most butter-

flies, skippers sport a distinctive hook tip to their antennae quite unlike the ball tip owned by their larger cousins. About 20 species of skippers frequent our area, with many having, like birds, fairly specific habitat preferences. Sedge meadows are especially good habitat for skippers because their caterpillars eat sedges and grasses. The meadow was a good one, and in no time I encountered large numbers of dun skippers (one of the plainest butterflies) and a couple of broad-winged skippers. The latter's upper wing surface is boldly marked with orange and black (as many skippers are). When the wings close, the hindwing's underside displays an orange bar across its middle. Next I spotted a Peck's skipper, one of the smallest and prettiest skippers, sitting on a leaf. Something wasn't quite right, however, for its body was tilted on an odd angle. And when I approached, it didn't move. When I got really close, instead of flying, it shuf-

fled sideways, its body still held on that odd angle. Then I saw the reason behind its strange behaviour: t was in the grips of an even smaller spider. Spiders have eight eyes, and this tiny individual had two large ones in the front of its face. This made it a jumping spider. When one thinks of spiders, a beautiful silk web might come to mind. However, jumping spiders don't build silk traps; they use refined vision to find prey, which they stalk. When within appropriate distance of their target, they suddenly leap on it and quickly give it a poison death bite. The eyesight of the jumping spider is the best in the spider kingdom. While the other six eyes help them spot meals in the space around them, their huge front eyes provide sharp vision and give their owner the ability to precisely judge distances. Depth perception is provided by the overlap of two visual fields. Many animals change the eyes' focal point by chang-

ing the shape of the lenses. Unlike all other animals, jumping spiders change theirs by moving their retinas with muscles. This makes the large front eyes perform not unlike little search beams that, upon convergence, provide sharp focus and remarkable depth perception. There are a number of species of jumping spiders in our area. All are small, and most are dark, so one must look closely to spot one. They are fascinating animals, unique in the spider world for the way they see and hunt. And unlike most others of their kind, no tangled webs these spiders weave! The Nature email is mruntz@start.ca. Michael Runtz is a longtime columnist who teaches natural history and ornithology at Carleton University. He has worked as a naturalist in provincial and national parks, hosted the television series "Wild by Nature," and has written 11 books on natural history topics.

OPINION

DESPITE THE DEPRESSION, FAMILY WAS STILL RICH IN MANY WAYS SPENDING QUIET EVENINGS TOGETHER A WARM MEMORY FOR COLUMNIST MARY COOK MARY COOK Column

The heat of the summer had settled into the old log house. Even with the windows wide open, covered with the homemade screens Father had made, very little air came in, and no heat went out. At least the Findlay Oval had been moved to the summer kitchen. When it became un-

bearable, after supper and after the kitchen had been redded up, we settled into a routine that gave us relief, while at the same time giving me the warmest feeling deep in my stomach, and it had nothing to do with the beating sun that had pounded down on our house all day. Father would be the first to move. He would drag out the back door the rocking chair that sat by the stove, and from where he could rest his feet on the oven door to read the paper. Of course, there was no

stove there in the summer. Then my sister Audrey would take two kitchen chairs outside and put them on the grass beside the back stoop. Without being asked, my three brothers, well aware of the routine, grabbed the braided rug from the doorway and tossed it on the ground a few feet away from the back step where the grass was high. Mother took the twig chair, the only piece of the twig furniture she could tolerate, and moved it off the stoop to help form the circle we had made on the east side of the old log house. The sun was going down, and long shadows soon touched us, and I knew that before long,

dusk would be with us, and then the blessed darkness of a Renfrew County night. Until then, there would just be idle chatter. Father talking about the hay he had cut that day, the brothers about the catch of mud pout from the Bonnechere, Audrey asking Mother if she thought the wild strawberries along the train tracks would be ready for picking. As for me, sitting on the grass at Mother's feet, I just listened, knowing I had little to add to the talk around me. Our arms and legs had been covered with something that came in a bottle from Ritza's Drugstore, so the mosquitoes stayed well away. Mother had her

mouth organ, and as I knew she would, the first tune she played was "The Sidewalks of New York". Sometimes, if Audrey knew the tune, she would sing softly in her sweet high voice, and I would again marvel at her talent. The three boys played a game where you had to come up with a word that started with the last letter of the word they gave. Of course, I couldn't spell, so I was left out. I didn't mind in the least. I was too caught up in the familiar night sounds around me. I could hear a cricket. Was it the same cricket we heard during the day? Mother said they brought good luck. As the night blackened around us, I could see the red smouldering tobacco brighten in the bowl of Father's pipe when he drew on it. Not enough to give us light, but enough to tell me that Father was content ... resting after long hours in the fields that day in the blistering sun. I could feel my eyes be-

coming heavy. I leaned my head against Audrey's shoulder. The night sounds around me couldn't keep me from nodding off. I knew I would waken in the morning in bed, laying on top of the feather mattress in my flourbag underwear, not sure how I got there. But in those moments of darkness, I would again marvel at how rich my family was, while everyone was talking about something called the Depression, which to me was happening in some other land. NOVENA TO St. Jude. O Holy St. Jude, Apostle and martyr, near kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor of all who invoke your special patronage in time of need, to you I have recourse from the bottom of my heart and humbly beg to whom God has given great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition. In return, I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked. Say 3 Our Fathers, 3 Hail Mary’s and 3 Glorys. Publication must be promised. St. Jude, pray for us all who invoke your aid. Amen. This novena has never been known to fail. DJ

PRAYER TO the Blessed Virgin, never to fail! Oh most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in necessity, Oh Star of the Sea. Help me and show me, here you are “my mother”. Oh Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of heaven and earth. I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to secure me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days and then you must publish it and it will be granted to you. DJ

STONE FENCE THEATRE Stone Fence Theatre, the theatrical voice of the Ottawa Valley since 2003, is presenting a new musical in summer 2018 that is sure to warm hearts, fire up Valley pride and get a lot of people talking. I Come from the Valley! Tales and Times of Joan Finnigan brings to life the stories that the Valley's most illustrious author, Joan Finnigan, collected from Valley old-timers as well as the tumultuous times she lived through. The show is written by the Eganville company's producer, Ish Theilheimer, with Johanna Zomers, and directed by Chantal Elie-Sernoskie. It presents a grab bag of the author's funniest and most poignant stories, many of them in musical form for the first time. Joan Finnigan, who published 28 books, was the daughter of one of the NHL's first superstars, Frank Finnigan. Raised in Roaring '20s Ottawa, her parents came from Shawville, Que., which was her second home as a child. There, she absorbed the Valley's story-telling tradition. When, in the mid-'60s, she suddenly became a single mother of three, she rejected all sensible options and set out to raise them on what she could earn as a freelance writer. She had a huge success with the script she wrote for NFB film Best Damned Fiddler from Calabogie to Kaladar, which became Canada's Film of the Year in 1969. Joan became a Canadian literary celebrity in the '70s but turned from that to focus on what really drove her - collecting oral histories from the Valley's old-

Always outspoken and often controversial, Finnigan, herself, was a literary giant. The songs and dialogue in the show are drawn, as much as possible, from Finnigan's works and words, including stories, poetry and personal interviews. The music is Celtic and Irish in flavour, with most of the songs based on traditional Irish fiddle and pipe tunes. Musical accompaniment is by the Donohue Family of Douglas - Aidan (17), Mhari (15), Hannah (13), Kieran (10) and their mother Siobheann, who is a member of Lakefield, Ontario's famous Leahy family. All are multi-instrumentalists and born show people. Stone Fence Theatre favourite Fran Pinkerton assumes the title role of Joan Finnigan and is supported by a talented cast of Stone Fence Theatre veterans and new faces. Seventeen performances are planned, with five summer supper shows in Rankin and one in

Barry's Bay, and a stop in Sheenboro, Que. In fall, there will be performances in Westmeath, Almonte, Shawville, Killaloe, Renfrew (with supper), Rankin (with supper), Deep River and Ottawa, all places that Finnigan knew and loved. Also on tap this season is an Aug. 7 concert - an Ottawa Valley Jubilee. It features the Ottawa Valley's favourite singer, Gail Gavan, who returns to Stone Fence Theatre after several years' absence, with one of the Valley's, and Canada's, greatest fiddlers, Louis Schryer, along with a host of other musical guests helping celebrate the Stone Fence Theatre's 15th anniversary. This year the company has introduced a new online ticketing system that enables customers to choose their own seats and tables at supper theatre shows and purchase tickets more easily than ever. The company's website is www.stonefence.ca. Box office phone number is 613-628-6600 or, toll-free, 1-866-310-1004.

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.

sudoku

horoscopes

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
