Arnprior has changed a lot in 150 years. And the Arnprior and District Museum has a unique item to mark Canada’s sesquicentennial to show what the town looks like during this monumental year. Local photographer Frank Dugal has complied 150 photos from Arnprior including homes, churches, businesses, landscapes and more to capture the town in 2017. The poster itself is a striking mosaic of all that is Arnprior coming together on one canvass. “It is one of our initiatives for Canada 150,” said Wendy Chennette, children’s program co-ordinator at the Arnprior and District Museum. “We wanted to show what Arnprior looked like for Canada 150.” The posters are a fundraiser for the museum and cost $10 each and can be purchased at the museum located at 35 Madawaska St. “It’s a really cool piece of memorabilia of an important year in Canada’s history,” said Chennette. The museum only had 200 posters printed making it quite the limited edition item. The County of Renfrew reminds the public about wild parsnip. Staff continues to receive inquiries about the presence of wild parsnip on public and private property, and further calls are expected in 2017. Wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa) is an invasive plant that is increasingly common within the County of Renfrew in areas of uncultivated land, roadside ditches, nature trails, as well as on and surrounding rural and residential properties. Wild parsnip may pose a health risk to humans. The plant sap contains chemicals that may cause skin and eye irritation and make the skin prone to burning and blistering when exposed to the sun. The blisters typically occur one to two days after contact with the plant. This can result in long-term scarring of the skin. The best way to avoid contact with wild parsnip is to become familiar with what the plant looks like so you do not accidentally come in contact with the plant.

United Way funds new position at hospice Kinburn Community Centre
INDOOR MAINTENANCE TENDERS Are being accepted for the 2017/2018 year.
Tender package may be signed for at: Darvesh Grocery & Video 3084 Kinburn Side Road, Kinburn, ON Closing date for Tender: August 8th, 5pm
Hospice Renfrew is building its staff thanks to the support of the United Way of Renfrew County (UW). Earlier this spring UW announced that nine charities would receive over $198,000 to fund health and social services for 2017-18. Hospice Renfrew official received their cheque from the UW on July 5 for $15,000 to create the new resident and family support counsellor position. Tracey Cummings started in the new position June 26. “Hospice Renfrew is very pleased to have received funding from the United Way to create the new position, said Judy Cobus, manager volunteer and community development services at Hospice Renfrew. “We are so fortunate to have Tracey Cummings as a resource to our residents and their families during what can be a challenging time in their lives. We also offer enhanced grief and bereavement support for families in our care. We hope to be able to receive ongoing sustainable funding for this position to become permanent. It is our vision to be able to offer support to those in our community going forward. Patricia Lafreniere, executive

Maureen Sullivan-Bentz, executive director at Hospice Renfrew, Tracey Cummings, the new resident and family support counselor, Judy Cobus, manager volunteer and community development services accept a cheque from Patricia Lafreniere, executive director with Renfrew County United Way for $15,000 on July 5 to fund the new position. director with Renfrew County United Way explains that they fund programs and services that align with priority goals, which are set through community assessment. The priorities include: youth, child poverty, seniors, transportation, medical services (health), and safe affordable housing. These strategic priorities arose from a series of public consultations held throughout Renfrew County. “For the first time in history our region has more residents over the age of 55 than under the age of 15, which means the
need for services supporting seniors issues is on the rise. With this comes the need to support those dealing with loss and crisis, whether it is the loss of a loved one or the loss of one’s own independence, said Lafreniere in an email statement on the announcement. “Renfrew County United Way runs a fundraising campaign each year to fund programs such as the one at Hospice Renfrew and without these dollars many would not receive the help to move past some of life’s hurdles. Cummings recently completed her degree in human rela-
tions and spirituality at St. Paul University in Ottawa and has a background in social work. For the last four years she was the regional manager for the ALS Society in Ottawa, where she worked on front line support and with families in their homes. “This is a really nice fit to bring it all together, said Cummins who resides in Fitzroy Harbour. “Spirituality is very important for me and I am comfortable to have those end-of-life conversations with people. While with the ALS Society part of her region was Renfrew County and she says she feels very familiar with this area. She also referred a former client to Hospice Renfrew and visited it before; she speaks very highly of it. “This is about life, music, laughter, baking and supporting people who live here at the end of their life, it’s a very nice place, said Cummings. “It seems to be a very good place, it’s very homey and nice. Lafreniere encourages the public to please donate to Renfrew County United Way at renfrewcountyunitedway.ca or contact the office in Pembroke at 613-735-0436.

USE BBQS OUTDOORS ONLY! They produce carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas that can lead to unconsciousness and even death. Never use or store propane cylinders inside any structure, including garages. Take these steps when starting a BBQ: Open the hood.
Never leave the BBQ unattended when in use.
Turn on the gas release valve on the tank.
Make sure grease does not build up on the burners or at the base of the BBQ. This could cause a grease fire.
Turn on the grill controls or heat settings. Take a step back. Push the igniter button. If there is no igniter button, insert a long match or BBQ lighter through the side burner hole first, then turn on the heat control knob. If the burner does not ignite right away, turn the gas off and wait five minutes, keeping the hood open, before repeating the procedure.
At the start of the BBQ season, do this THREE-STEP SAFETY CHECK of your BBQ: 1 CLEAN Use a pipe cleaner or wire to ensure
burner ports are free of rust, dirt, spider webs or other debris.
2 CHECK Examine the hose leading from the tank to the burners. Replace it if cracked or damaged.
3 TEST Find leaks by applying a 50/50 solution of water and dish soap to propane cylinder connections and hoses. If bubbles appear, tighten the connection and/or replace the damaged parts and retest. McNab/Braeside Fire Dept Fire Chief Hartwick 613 623 5756 ext 233

Never throw water on a grease fire – this will only spread the flame. DO NOT place the BBQ close to wooden fences or walls, vinyl siding, or anything that can burn. The area behind your BBQ must be free of anything that can ignite – this is where hot gases escape. Keep loose clothing away from a hot BBQ. Keep children and pets at least one metre (three feet) away from a hot BBQ. When finished barbecuing, turn the gas valve off first, then turn off the burner controls so no gas is left in the connecting hose. Allow the BBQ to cool completely before closing the cover. If you live in an apartment or condo building, check with the building owner or property manager, or the Condominium Act of your building, regarding the use of BBQs on your building’s balconies. * SAFETY TIPS COURTESY OF THE TECHNICAL STANDARDS AND SAFETY AUTHORITY / WWW.SAFETYINFO.CA

Town’s puzzle pieced together in photo spread for musuem Continued from page 1
“It’s everything that makes Arnprior, Arnprior!” said Chennette. “It reminds me of the great community Arnprior is with all of its puzzle pieces.” The museum is also selling a one-of-a-kind Arnprior colouring books featuring Arnprior and area landmarks. The cost for the 28-page, glossy cover book is $8 each or two for $15. The book was created using a special computer program that took scanned post cards of Arnprior and turned them into stick form for the colouring pages.
“It’s very unique and it shows Arnprior as it was,” said Janet Carlile, museum curator. “It appeals to all ages and is a really good commemorative item, it’s also the 50th anniversary of the museum and it also celebrates that.” The museum has a busy few months coming up as it finishes off its summer camp in August where campers will take a trip around the world in 12 days. The camp runs Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., costing only $7 per day or $30 for five days. Space is still available, but the programs are always full the day of the camp. In September, the museum is welcoming a new exhibit from the Royal Ontario Museum

New barber shop opens in downtown Arnprior TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Pascal Nehme grew up in Lebanon watching and learning from his elders how to cut hair. He has now brought his passion and skill to downtown Arnprior. “I used to go and watch my older relatives cut hair and that’s how it all got started,” he said on July 25, moments before he and the mayor cut the ribbon (with a razor) to officially open J’s Barber Shop at 71 Madawaska St. in Arnprior. “Welcome to Arnprior,” said Mayor David Reid. “We hope it’s a success, and the town’s growing, which is
great!” The family has strong connections to Arnprior as their family lives here and they are planning on moving to town in August from Barrhaven. “We came here to visit my fatherin-law and I liked Arnprior, it’s a really friendly town,” said Nehme. “We looked everywhere and we decided to open here because it is the best.” The new, crisp, clean, shop is now open for business and welcomes walkins. He offers straight razor shaves, hot towel shaves, nose and ear waxes, haircuts for men and he even has a red race car seat for kids to sit in for their cuts.

He speaks passionately that men should have the same hair-care experiences as women do. “It’s refreshing, and men should have that treatment too,” said Nehme. He encourages everyone to come and check out his new shop. “It’s clean, with good service and we want to make our customers hap-
py,” said Nehme. “I am very excited it’s my first shop.” Nehme has lived in Canada for 11 years; ten years ago he arrived in Alberta from Lebanon and worked at a barber shop. “We decided to move (to Ontario) because of family,” said Nehme. “We are very happy to be in Arnprior.”
He and his wife Christine have three children: Jamie, Justin and Julio, hence the inspiration for the name of the shop. He is now open for business Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call 613883-0191.

August 2017 We are well into summer and unfortunately the weather has not gotten a whole lot better. Still way too much rain for the land to bear—and even too much for the lakes and rivers. It has certainly been a tough season for everyone, and visibly so for the farmers who have been trying valiantly to find enough good days to get the haying done. I’ve spent much of July travelling on a legislative committee holding public hearings on Bill 148 which proposes changes to the Employment Standards Act and the Labour Relations Act. The most contentious part of this bill is clearly the rapid change proposed to the minimum wage in Ontario. If passed, it would increase by over 20 percent on January 1st, 2018 and by 31 percent as of January 1st, 2019. As would be expected, advocates for an increased minimum wage made their views known in committee. In fact, many felt that the change should come even sooner. They certainly believe that these changes will benefit those they advocate for. Deputations from small businesses across Ontario, and those organizations representing small business, had a much different view. They expressed serious concerns regarding the proposed changes. They used the word “fear” and believe these changes could lead to hurting the most vulnerable instead of helping them. They indicated that the changes would force them to decrease the number of employees, reduce the hours of work, and require them to raise prices significantly. We in the PC Party have said right from the moment the Bill was introduced, that before changes of such magnitude are made, a comprehensive economic impact study should be completed. This would provide the opportunity to properly analyze how this would affect not only those individuals which the changes are supposed to help, but also the small businesses that would be primarily footing the bill. We heard from businesses all across Ontario—businesses like Calabogie Peaks—who explained that their business competes with ski hills mostly on the Quebec-side of the border. Owner Paul Murphy stated that the legislation would have a dramatic effect on their ability to compete. Additionally, Galen Weston, CEO of food giant Loblaw’s, said this would be a $190 million hit to his company. Can you hear the sound of grocery prices rising? Under increasing pressure from business analysts, Premier Wynne has said that she will help businesses through the transition, but gave no details of what that help may be. If she had done what she needed to do in the first place and conducted an economic impact study, we would have had a much better idea of what that impact will be. We will have to wait until September to find out what changes the Liberals may bring forward. It has happened again: the anti-logging alarmists are rearing their ugly heads, calling for an end to logging in Algonquin Park. The British Columbia-based Wilderness Committee recently started petitioning the Province. This battle has been going on for decades. And everyone knowns that the forest-management plan in Algonquin Park is world class in nature. My Father fought the anti-logging lobby some 40 years ago and I can assure you that I will do the same. Logging in Algonquin Park is not only done to the highest standards, but it is also done in a way that is least disruptive to other activities in the park. It is a major economic driver in our region. We will not allow the claims of some groups in British Columbia to go unchallenged. I commend the County of Renfrew for once again standing up, as they always have, to defend the practice of harvesting timber from Algonquin Park. The well-managed harvesting of timber makes Algonquin a better park, provides jobs for our men and women, and adds millions of dollars to the local economy. It is vital, sustainable and worth fighting for. Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, August 3, 2017 7

Fore goodness’ sake This year’s U.S. Open, arguably the most desired title in golf, was won by Brooks Koepka, a first time major tournament winner. The tournament was played on a first-time site, the Erin Hills golf course in Wisconsin that was a bleak, treeless non-traditional layout. But the Koepka win was not the most significant story coming out of that U.S. Open. That has to go to Phil Mickelson, a golfer who wants to win the U.S. Open more than any other tournament after six second-place finishes and the window closing on the 46 year old’s competitive golfing years. Phil withdrew from this year’s U.S. Open because his daughter Amanda, as president of her high school class, was to give a speech at the graduation ceremony. It was impossible for Phil to be in two places at one time and so he opted to withdraw from the U.S. Open and to be at home to hear his daughter speak. This was the same daughter who almost brought about Phil’s withdrawal from the 1999 U.S. Open as her birth was expected at any time during that tournament. Phil was prepared to leave that tournament at any point, leading or not, to be at home for the birth. As things turned out, he was able to finish the tournament (he placed second) and then fly quickly home to be there to witness Amanda’s birth.
What we like about all of this is that Phil seems to have his priorities straight. Family first, career second. We like that. It was a similarly heart warming situation when Smiths Falls golfer Brooke Henderson won the LPGA tournament at the same time as the U.S. Open was being held. To see her jumping for joy and hugging with her sister and her father after winning that tournament made your heart explode with pride. Here was a still 19 year old golfer who not only is exceptionally talented but who also obviously knows and appreciates the value of family. It is stories like these about Phil and Brooke which make you see athletes in a different light. You admire them because of their human qualities, not just their golfing skills. Eat your heart out, Tiger! Speaking of Brooke, she will be a star attraction at the upcoming Canadian Pacific Women’s Open golf tournament at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club from Aug. 21 to 27 later this summer. An estimated 70,000 spectators are expected and Brooke will be the centre of attention, as she should be. She’s not only one of the world’s top golfers already in her young career but she has shown that she’s the type of person that’s human and likeable. Arnold Palmer had these traits and he was known as the “King.” It not hard to see Brooke soon being the “Queen.”
The unjustified demonization of Omar Khadr To the editor:
The 15-year debate over the treatment of former jihadist child soldier Omar Khadr has been dominated by much emotion but little factual evidence. We see this continuing with the debate over the $10.5 million lawsuit settlement paid out by the Justin Trudeau government to Khadr and his lawyers. MP Cheryl Gallant and the Conservative Party continue to fan the popular flames of outrage. In the interests of clearing up the deep fog, let us review what should not be considered facts: It is not a fact that Khadr is a terrorist, certainly not in the sense of having plotted or committed an attack against a population. It is not a fact that Khadr is a murderer. It is not even a fact that Khadr

killed anyone, or that he threw the grenade that killed U.S. Sergeant Christopher Speer in a firefight in Afghanistan in 2002. It is a fact that the Supreme Court and other courts have ruled that Khadr’s charter rights were violated when he was held in Guantanamo Bay with the complicity of the Government of Canada. It is a fact that Khadr was subject to sleep deprivation and lack of legal counsel by his Guantanamo captors. It is a fact that Khadr made a guilty plea bargain to killing Sgt. Speer and to “terrorism” charges. This is poor evidence of criminality however, given the lack of due process in the charges against him by a kangaroo military tribunal, and given the threat of incarceration in Guantanamo for many more years beyond the decade already
spent there. Any innocent person subject to false charges would have rationally made the same bargain to return to Canada. No person ever witnessed Khadr killing Sgt. Speer. The prosecution against Khadr was supported by circumstantial evidence, and even contradicted by a Pentagon report which suggested that another combatant was potentially the killer. Khadr now maintains that he does not remember if he threw the grenade. Conservatives quibble whether “child soldier” is an accurate term for someone who was captured at the age of near-16. Khadr was however brought by his parents from Canada to Afghanistan to join the conflict there at the age of eight, which no one believes is an age of informed consent. siasm for jihad, he has instead shown gratitude and humility in his public statements since his return to Canada. One does not need to read “liberal” or “left” media to grasp these truths. The National Post editors faulted multiple Canadian governments for failing to repatriate and rehabilitate Khadr at the earliest opportunity after his 2002 capture. After having an innocent childhood robbed from his parents, the U.S. and Canadian governments then colluded to destroy his years as a youth for a crime he possibly never committed. These facts provide much more justification for sympathy than for tone-deaf anger and righteous scapegoating of a former child soldier. Stefan Klietsch Renfrew

Rural seniors village is crucial for Arnprior: GASC Arnprior Regional Health (ARH) has a long history of service to the community of Arnprior and surrounding area. As community needs have changed, ARH has responded to meet these needs by exploring new and innovative ways to deliver care. The redevelopment of the Grove Nursing Home and the related efforts to create a Seniors Village is a key focus for ARH and the community at large. The focus includes advocacy efforts for additional LTC bed licenses and the development of community partnerships to better serve the seniors of the greater Arnprior community. The Greater Arnprior Seniors Council (GASC) has been and continues to be highly engaged in working towards the common goal of creating an Age Friendly Community. ARH together with the greater Arnprior Community is currently developing a model to promote the most independence and the highest quality of life for older adults that is economically sustainable within a community setting: a Rural Seniors Village. This is a multi-phase project, which includes the new and expanded build of the Grove nursing home and the opportunity to repurpose the existing building for seniors housing and com-
munity services. Together, we are exploring opportunities to improve local seniors care and is using a codesign approach to flush out the Seniors Village design. A Co-design session was held the afternoon of June 9, 2017 and was attended by 44 individuals with a wide variety of perspectives on this issue including well seniors, seniors requiring some assistance, seniors living in Long Term Care (LTC), caregivers, service providers, funders, and political representatives. Amongst the participant organizations was the Greater Arnprior Seniors Council. Eight members of the GASC participated in the session. Darrel O’Shaughnessy, chair of the GASC, opened the event with a welcome speech that resonated with the audience and set the stage for the afternoon. The Grove Redevelopment and Rural Seniors Village aligns with the mandate/mission of the Greater Arnprior Seniors Council and the committee continues to be instrumental in moving this initiative ahead. The objectives of the co-design working session were to review and discuss common themes and reflect on potential improvement ideas, which allow seniors to live to their full potential in our community.

At the co-design session, 17 change ideas were identified. The diverse group jointly prioritized the ideas that would bring the most significant impact in improving the local seniors care and the experience for clients and providers. There are few change ideas that have been consistently prioritized throughout the working session, one of them being to expand the capacity of transportation for seniors in the community and the construction of additional affordable housing units with supportive services. One major focus of the GASC and of the Age Friendly Community Plan is to support and advocate for an increase in capacity of transportation for seniors in the greater Arnprior Community. Lack of transportation is a big challenge, especially in rural areas and leaves our seniors stranded and isolated, unable to attend appointments and /or social gatherings. The GASC is working together with Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home Program, the town of Arnprior, ARH and government officials to find sustainable solutions. A number of opportunities identified at the co-design session, such as the construction of additional affordable housing units, cannot be implemented until we built the new nursing home. However, there are some change ideas that
can be worked on in the short term until the receipt of the additional LTC licences, which will kick start the project. Five change ideas have been identified that can be advanced now and will help with the transition later on: • Elevate competence level of service providers and family supports for advanced dementia care; • Develop a Seniors Drop in Centre (Elderly Person Center –EPC); • Increase resources to address the level of acuity and complexity of care requirements for those in ALS and ADP… • New resources for Dementia including ADP and short stay respite; • Intergenerational programming with daycares. Advancing those change ideas will keep the momentum going until ARH receives the additional 36 licences. An action plan is being developed for those opportunities. Together with an engaged community and the support of committees like the GASC we will be able to address and act on the need of seniors in our community. Katrin Spencer Arnprior Regional Health

Many deserve credit for Grove To the editor: This refers to the article ‘The adventures of a Canadian tree,’ in the June 29 edition of the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide. This article states “Few can appreciate the obstacles our hero (white pine) had overcome more than Brenda van Sleeuwen of the Nature Conservancy of Canada.” This article goes on to “A great to-do was made in the media last year when her non-profit organization realized the tallest white pine (154 feet) in Ontario calls the Grove home.” If Brenda had spent some time with the organizers of the Save the Grove committee (myself included) she would have discovered the executive were well aware of the tallest white pine years before the NCC got involved with dollars we raised to purchase Gillies Grove. Many deserve credit for this discovery, none more than Sloan Watters who worked for Gillies for 37 years and was a joy to work with on the Save the Grove committee. Sloan, who passed away recently, worked tirelessly to ensure future generations would experience the values of an old growth forest of white pine, sugar maples, hemlock and beechwood. Proposal tackles cellular dead zones across Eastern Ontario The County of Renfrew is pleased to support efforts by the Eastern Ontario Regional Network to seek federal and provincial support to improve cellular coverage in the region. Gaps in cellular services are standing in the way of the region’s economic growth and public safety. The Eastern Ontario Regional Network (EORN) is proposing a $213-million public-private partnership to improve both the reach and quality of cellular data services in the region. According to an engineering study commissioned by EORN: • About one quarter of the area where there are homes, businesses or major roads in the region cannot access any cellular services. • Depending on the cell carrier, another 28 per cent to 40 per cent of the area has inadequate capacity to provide high-quality mobile broadband service given the demand, which continues to grow.
mission’s basic services goals. “Too often, Eastern Ontarians find themselves with no signal or dropped cell services. EORN is building on the investment we’ve already made in fibre optics across the region to close the gap in cell services and improve economic growth, quality of life and public safety,” said EORN chair J. Murray Jones. Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus chair Robert Quaiff said, “The demand for mobile data is growing exponentially, but our region is deeply lacking the needed infrastructure to keep up. This project is our top priority because Eastern Ontario’s future is at stake.” EORN has submitted a detailed business case for cell expansion to the federal and provincial governments. The proposal also includes a dedicated, public safety broadband network to seamlessly connect first responders regionwide. Building both networks together would cost about $299 mil“Residents, businesses and first re- lion, saving about $47 million comsponders are relying more and more pared to building them separately on effective and reliable communications every day,” Warden Jennifer About EORN Murphy said. “Mobile broadband is EORN, a nonprofit created by the an essential tool to grow local busi- Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus, nesses, generate jobs, and would con- helped to improve fixed broadband tinue to strengthen Eastern Ontario as access to nearly 90 per cent of Eastan area that provides the expected ser- ern Ontario through a $175-million vices that attract residents, businesses network funded by the federal, proand tourism.” vincial and municipal governments The gaps are the result of market and the private sector service providfailure. In nature, every day is Halloween MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’s Way
Unless one is robbing a bank or attempting to flee paparazzi, apart from Halloween, disguises are seldom worn at any time of year. On that one special evening children and many adults put on disguises to transform themselves into something very different than what they are in real life. The costumes turn their wearers into bloodsucking vampires and superheroes such as Spiderman. Many animals also wear disguises. For some, the costume might involve sticking pieces of their environment onto their bodies. Caddisfly nymphs live in the water and make themselves look like non-living entities by sticking, depending upon the type of water they inhabit, small pieces of organic debris or sand grains onto a silk tube in which they hide. The camouflaged looper caterpillar similarly adorns its body with pieces of petals and leaves from the flowers on which it feeds. Some animals need not add items to their body in order to create a false impression of what they are, and instead wear their disguise all of the time. For some, such as the giant swallowtail caterpillar, the body can resemble a chunk of bird dropping, something at which most animals turn up their nose. For others, the disguise involves something that makes the animal look much larger than it really is. There is more than one way of looking larger than life. American toads inhale air to inflate their bodies. Young great horned owls that leave the nest too early and end up on the ground spread their wings and fluff up their feathers. Many insects, however, employ a very different method
of looking much larger than they really are. In addition to their real eyes that provide them with visual acuity, many insects sport large eyespots that make them look like larger animals such as snakes. A number of local moths sport eyespots on their hindwings, keeping them hidden when their owners sit on tree trunks. When attacked, the moths open their wings to fly away, and when they do large, colourful ‘eyes’ suddenly appear and startle the would-be attacker. The startle effect may only last for a second or two but that is often sufficient time to let the moth vanish behind the tree or disappear on the ground. Eyespots that are only displayed when their owner senses danger are known as startle patterns. Other insects own eyespots that are always on display. Many butterflies including eyed brown and common woodnymph own eyespots on their wings that are believed to deceive potential predators such as birds into thinking that they have encountered something too big to tackle. A few caterpillars and beetles also own this eye-opening defence. One of my favourite beetles having eyespots is the eyed elater, a beetle about an inch in length. Elaters are click beetles that when turned onto their backs, right themselves by bending a special prong on their underside in a receptacle until it snaps out, causing the beetle to flip into the air and right itself. When the prong flicks out, it creates a loud click, hence the name. The click can be repeated a number of times. That is, until a loaded chamber is finally hit. The Nature email is mruntz@start. ca

Owen’s submission was to take an aerial photo of everyone wearing red and white in the shape of the Canadian flag. Owen was named mayor for the day on Feb. 13, where he attended meetings with Mayor Reid at town hall, visited the public works garage, toured the water filtration plant and called the Feb. 13 council meeting to order. On Canada Day, an aerial photo was taken in the shape of a maple leaf, with participants wearing red and white. Ella Havey, a Grade 1 student at Walter Zadow Elementary School, was the winner of the Grade 1 contest. Ella’s submission was to plant 150 trees in Arnprior in 2017. Ella received the opportunity to have a tour and photo with Mayor Reid and the deputy chief at the fire hall and the water filtration plant, and she took a ride on the Zamboni at the
Nick Smith Centre. A tree planting ceremony was held on Earth Day, April 22, where a ceremonial tree was planted with a plaque marking the commitment to plant 150 trees throughout the year. There will be 38 trees planted on Elgin Street this year through the Downtown Revitalization Project, 50 trees planted through the Emerald Ash Borer Management Program, and the remaining 61 trees were handed out to residents at Priorpalooza. The 150 Events Passport started on Jan. 1, and includes 150 events being held in Arnprior throughout 2017. Passport holders collect stamps at any events they attend, and in January 2018, participants can drop them off at town hall for a chance to win a prize for the most events attended. There will also be a participation draw for anyone who submits a passport, so it is not too late to start collecting stamps. There are over 60 events remaining this year to attend, and you can pick up a passport at any of the events, town hall, the Nick Smith Centre, the Arnprior and District Museum and the Arnprior Public Library. For more information on the 150 Events Passport, visit www.arnprior. ca/150events.

OPG’s Calabogie Generating Station marks 100th anniversary TIFFANT LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
One hundred years of power is being marked in Calabogie. In November, the Calabogie Generating Station (GS) will be 100 years old, and the water is just as powerful as it was a century ago. At the start of a media tour of the GS on July 27, the water above the turbines in the intake area is a steady stream of what seems to be calm water; it’s not, as it drops 20 feet into the generating station that was built in 1917. Later on in the tour, the large group of officials moves to view the sluice gates, where the power of the water can really be felt and seen. It’s a special year at Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for three of its stations on the Madawaska River. Not only is the Calabogie Station celebrating 100 years, but Barrett Chute GS marks its 75th anniversary in August and Mountain Chute GS will celebrate its 50th anniversary in November. The tour marked the first time Jeff Lyash, president and chief executive officer of OPG, visited the area, which he said was a beautiful town. He hopes to find a cabin to stay longer next time. Lyash says it is interesting to think what a pioneering effort the Calabogie GS was at the time. “We are really proud of this station as a company and we are really glad to be part of the community here with

On July 27, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) staff, toured the Calabogie Generating Station, on hand for the tour are: Katie Caughey, tradesperson; Dave Fortin, electrical and control technician; Eric McGoey, director of corporate communications; Randy Pitts, manager Upper Madawaksa Works Centre; Cindy Kaye, internal communications; Jeff Lyash, chief executive officer and president of OPG; Frank Trzebiatowski, production manager; Mike Martelli, president of renewable generation and power marketing; John Hefford, regional vice-president Eastern Operations and Jennifer Gardiner, OPG communications . this station as the anchor. You think about this station 100 years ago; this place was built essentially before the country was electrified,” said Lyash. “This was built for a local purpose

and after 100 years it’s now become an important part of a much larger system. It was built for this region but now it’s tied into an electric power system that serves Ontarians 24-7.”
The two-unit station produces four megawatts of clean, renewable electricity into the grid to power about 4,000 homes. Randy Pitts, manager of works centre Upper Madawaska, has been the manager for four years with 20 electrical, mechanical, and clerical staff based at Barrett Chute. “On the Madawaska system, we have the trifecta — Calabogie is 100 years old, Barrett is 75 years old, and Mountain is 50 years old,” said Pitts. “These are monumental anniversaries and it’s a proud moment for the company. It’s a very proud moment for our staff who have been maintaining these GS for years, including family members that have worked here for a number of years.” The Calabogie GS is one of five

on the Madawaska River and was constructed by the Calabogie Light and Power company in seven months. The crew did it all without the use of heavy equipment, except for a couple of concrete hoists and lifting devices. This development was owned and operated by M.J. O’Brien of Renfrew and was later sold to Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario, the predecessor to Ontario Hydro, in 1929. The five Madawaska stations, and two control dams upstream, operate a cascading river system that sees the river’s waters flow down through each station, covering a distance of 225 km and falling approximately 244 m — a drop that is four times the height of Niagara Falls. Together, the five plants power 615,000 homes with clean, renewable energy.

Former Packers coach hired for Cumberland Grads of CCHL TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Tony Iob is moving up from the Valley. The Renfrew native and former Arnprior Packers coach is the new head coach and director of hockey operations for the Cumberland Grads of the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL). The announcement was made on July 31 via the clubs Twitter account. Most recently Iob was the head coach of the Packers and on Friday, July 28, Packers general manager Brent Sylvester announced that Iob had stepped down from the club “effective immediately.” In an email statement Packers general manager Brent Sylvester says the entire Packer organization wishes the best of luck to Iob and is excited for him. “Tony has left the Packer organization on an upswing and its players
in good place for us to continue and build off of last year’s success and into the future,” said Sylvester. “We thank Tony for his time as the Packers bench boss.” Sylvester does not currently have a replacement but confirms they have it narrowed to three candidates. “I am hoping to have a replacement announcement by next Tuesday (Aug. 8),” said Sylvester The Packers training camp is set for August 15,16,17. In a press release on the CCHL website it is noted this is Iob’s third position in the CCHL as he was previously with Pembroke and Kanata. “Cumberland is a very well-run organization (and) the roster looks fantastic so far,” said Iob, who played in 850 professional games over a 16-year playing career, in the release. “Sylvain Favreau (former coach) has put a good team together, so I don’t feel like I’m walking into a time bomb — this team is going to be competitive.”

Renfrew native Tony Iob, who played professional hockey for 18 seasons, is the new coach of the Cumberland Grads. In the same press release Grads owner and general manager Steve Barban praised Iob’s on and off ice skill. “Tony is a natural leader and possesses all the qualities of an excellent
coach,” said Barban. “As good an athlete and leader that Tony is, he’s an even better person which is number one in my books — we’re very pleased to welcome Tony to Grads country.” Iob grew up in Renfrew near the
Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School rink, which no longer exists but was key in his hockey development. The now 46-year old played professionally in five countries, he last played professionally in 2008/2009, for the Austrian team Graz EC, after starting his pro career in 1992/1993. That first season he averaged more than a point a game with Rochester of the American Hockey League and the Erie Panthers of the ECHL, but by the next season he’d skipped to Europe where he found his main hockey home over an 18-year playing career. The Italian-Canadian dual citizen also scored two goals during the 2006 Winter Olympics for Italy. He has also coached for the Renfrew Timberwolves and the University of Ottawa. In 2012 he told the Renfrew Mercury his childhood dream was to play in the NHL and now as an adult he dreams of coaching in the NHL. With the new position he is one step closer to achieving that dream. -with files from Steve Newman

Golf
Getting you back on the greens
The tee box that’s right for you WENDY TESSIER Mountain Creek Golf
As July rolls into August, Mountain Creek Golf course is busy and in superb shape. Can it get any greener? The recent spate of rain has seen the course become lusher than ever. Being a good walking and/or riding course, players’ rounds are coming in at four to four and a half hours, and even less if you’ve an early tee time: one early bird golfer is reputed to get his 18 holes done in two hours! One factor in speed of play can be the tee box you choose to play from. One of the joys of playing golf at Mountain Creek is your choice of forward tee boxes of which there are two sets: the yellow tees and the green tees. These advanced tees make for a shorter course – for instance, it’s 1,200 yards shorter playing from the yellow tees than from the reds; therefore, you’re likelier to have a quicker round if you can get on the green in two strokes on a par 4 instead of in three. If you’re a beginner, a high handicapper or the distance you used to hit has diminished, these tees provide the ideal spot to build or regain your confidence, obtain a lower score (bonus!) and not spend as much time on the golf course. It doesn’t get any better than that! Of course, every player can play whatever tees s/he chooses be they yellow, green, red, white or blue; but to really enjoy the game, even the pros will advise you to hit from the tees that best suit your game. So which tee box should you choose? Bear in mind that no colour tee box corresponds with the sex of the player. Anyone can play at any tee box regardless their gender. The women do
Grace’s tourney The second annual Grace Olivia Glofcheskie memorial golf tournament is August 5 at Sand Point Golf Course. year where they’re sure to be better matched. In MCGC men came in third in Division H so will Division A, top of the heap, is the Royal Ottawa be playing at Hammond next summer. Team who took first place. It is to dream…. members were: Geoff Major, Bryan Gormley, July 9th saw the men of Mountain Creek take Ray Tosh, Paul Petrie, Zach Fagan, Gregory not own the red tees, nor the men the whites and on Stittsville (44 points), Hammond (32 points) Schaepper, Sean Rousselle, Josh Moffat, Devo blues! Here are some good tips from golf writer and Glengarry (19 points) for the OVGA Men’s Devine, Wayne Deschamps, Eric Cormier and Brent Kelly to know which tee box to play from: Intersectional’s presented by Golf-O-Max. Shane Fagan. If you are unable to reach the par-3 holes in one shot (we’re talking distance, not actually getting your ball on the green), or unable to reach the par-4 holes in two shots from the set of tees you are playing, it’s a good sign that you need to move up to a shorter set of tees. Here’s another general guideline: take your average 5-iron distance (be honest!), multiply by 36, and choose the tees that most closely match that yardage. Say you hit your 5-iron 150 yards. So 150 times 36 equals 5,400 which would place you at the MOUNTAIN green tee box at Mountain Creek. If you are a CR E E K beginner, unless you know you can hit the ball a good distance with some accuracy and consisGOLF COURSE tency, then start from the forward tees. After a round or two from the forward tees, you’ll have a pretty good idea (based on your score and SENIOR your enjoyment level) if you should move back PUBLIC SENIOR’S GOLF & CART LESSONS FOR to a tougher set of tees or stay with one of the GROUP SPECIAL Monday’s After 3pm forward tee boxes. 2x67ag DR. SHARPE
Louis Ramon Born 91 years ago on the island nation of Trinidad & Tobago, Louis Sharpe aspired to a different life than that of government service, which he initially enjoyed. He set off for Canada, and McGill University to complete a Bachelor of Arts and ultimately a Doctorate of Dental Surgery, completed in 1963. From there he moved south, practising at New York Polyclinic, extending his studies to a Dental Fellowship in Anaesthesiology at Mount Sinai Hospital, and teaching briefly at Columbia University. He established his own dental practice in New York where, in 1964, he met his future wife, Gisela (nee Molk). They spent many happy years in the city, and had a son, Robert. In 1977 Louis moved his family to Almonte, Ontario where he practiced dentistry until his death. Louis had an immediate charm and a mischievous wit. His quirky sense of humour and easy laughter gave him a talent for putting others at ease and for making them feel welcome and important. Rarely would he be seen in public without suit and tie. He was passionate about fishing, classic British mystery novels, dentistry, and about his family. Louis passed quickly and peacefully at the Ottawa Heart Institute on July 27, 2017. The family wish to extend thanks to the compassionate physicians, nurses and all the kind staff who cared so well for him. His family will sorely miss him. A funeral will be held at Holy Name of Mary Parish in Almonte on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at 11am. Father’s idea ended in Mary and family running for cover MARY COOK Mary Cook’s Memories
Mother said Father was playing with fire, and as it turned out, he was. It had to do with the constant annoyance of mosquitoes, which invaded us every summer. There was nothing we liked better at the end of a day, than to escape the heat of the house and move our kitchen chairs out in the backyard, and sit a spell as the night closed in around us. Mother would play her mouth organ, and my sister Audrey would sing, and off in the distance we might hear the frogs. My brother Everett, who could whistle better than anyone in North-
cote, when coached would join Mother and Audrey. If you weren’t sitting on a kitchen chair, you were on a blanket on the ground, and since I was scared in the dark, I would sit as close to Mother as possible. We wouldn’t be out there more than a few minutes when one after the other of us would be swatting our arms and bare legs, hoping to connect with the horde of mosquitoes laying in wait for us. Soon Mother would say, “Enough of this, those blessed mosquitoes are eating us alive.” Then one night Father said he had an idea, and he vanished into the drive shed and lit the lantern. We had no idea what he was up to, but we could hear the hammer, and soon we could smell coal oil. We could faintly see his
outline when he came out of the drive shed with the lantern in one hand and a long piece of wood wrapped at one end with piles of feed bags. And it reeked to high heaven of coal oil. Father told us to put our chairs in a circle, and once we settled down, he took a match from his pocket, scraped it along the thigh of his overalls, and touched the match to the coal oil soaked bags on the end of the piece of wood. It sounded like a huge whoosh, like many people taking a big breath at the same time, and the whole thing burst into flames, and pieces of the feed bags flew everywhere. The fire lit up the entire area, including the barn yard, and the coal oil which had dripped down the piece of wood, set it on fire too, and those sitting on the
kitchen chairs knocked them over trying to get away from the flames which I was sure were going to burn down the entire farm, including the log house and barns! Father dropped the flaming coal oil soaked mass and headed for the house right behind us. We didn’t need a lantern to see our way. When we got inside, and Mother lit the lamp, we saw that Father’s straw hat was minus its front brim, and his face was blackened with soot. He went right to the wash basin on the bench at the back door. Mother was determined that none of us should go to bed until the fire was out, but Father said it would burn itself out, and we had nothing to worry about. Mother wasn’t so sure. He was right of course. It didn’t take long
for the feed bags to burn down. As for sitting out on a summer evening, that was the end of that. The mosquitoes won the battle. All that remained of Father’s idea was a half burnt stick of wood, a brown pile of burnt feed bags, and the smell of coal oil which lingered in the backyard for days. And just to remind us of Father’s attempt to rid us of the summer plague of mosquitoes was a circle of burnt grass right in the middle of the backyard. sudoku
Stew Comm art un Centre ity
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
