Local politicians are expressingREGION their disappointREGION ment the extension of four-laning of a vital roadway up the Valley has been left out of a new provincial funding plan. The next two phases of Highway 417 construction from Scheel Drive to the Town of Renfrew are not .CA .COM included in the Ministry of Transportation’s newlyreleased five-year capital plan. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski said he is both disappointed and frustrated with the decision. “This is a top priority for us in Renfrew County and I want to make sure we keep pushing it forward,” said Yakabuski. Renfrew County Warden Peter Emon also expressed his disappointment in a news release from the county, which has been strongly lobbying to have the four-laning continue soon after phase two out of Arnprior is complete in the next month or two. “We are obviously very disappointed by this decision. The County of Renfrew remains strongly committed to this project as it will transform the regions along the important trade route across the north of the province from Sudbury to Ottawa,” said Emon. “We will continue to work with the Government of Ontario, and the Government of Canada in the coming months to ensure we move this important project forward.”

After more than a decade of waiting, the Ottawa River has been officially designated as a Canadian Heritage River to the delight of many Valley politicians, tourism officials, environmentalists and history buffs. “We’re very happy. It was long overdue … it’s very encouraging,” said Ottawa River Institute president Ole Hendrickson. “It’s great timing with the Canada’s 150th celebration coming up.” He said the heritage designation will “open the door for more tourism in this area and could help with (grant) funding.” “It is an exciting day for all residents of the Ottawa Valley and for all of Canada,” said Ottawa Valley Tourist Association (OVTA) president Chris Hinsperger. “The Canadian Heritage River designation is national recognition of the historical, cultural and recreational importance of the Ottawa River,” he said in an OVTA news release. Retail vacancies dropping, even before revitalization finishes Derek Dunn

derek.dunn@metroland.com

The number of vacant stores in Arnprior has been cut by about one-third in less than two years. “Since the completion of the retail demand study in November 2014, a number of the identified gaps have been filled and attraction continues to focus around the recommendations,” reads a report to council by Lindsay Wilson, marketing and economic development officer. “At the time that the study was conducted there were 33 vacant stores, which has since decreased to the current 21.” The study suggested attracting businesses in 10 sectors, including a new supermarket or renovation/expansions to current home improvement stores, renovation/update of the Hart Department Store, two shoe stores, three midpriced women’s and chil-

dren’s clothing stores, one mid-priced men’s clothing store, three well-established, mid-priced table service restaurants, and three specialty, gift or craft stores. “Walmart and Target were specifically mentioned,” Wilson told council at the June 27 meeting. “However, Target then pulled out of Canada and Walmart has specified that due to our half hour proximity to four other existing locations, Arnprior is not a market they are looking to service further.” The addition of Jade and Laney, A Dash of Fab and The Artful Gallery helps with women’s clothing and accessories. But there is still a need for one or two children’s clothing stores, according to the study. Since the study, Krave Bistro, Greenside Tavern (in the study’s retail area) and M3 Eatery inside the Kenwood Centre have opened. Two more restaurants are undergoing renovations with

plans to open in the next 12 months. That will satisfy the study’s recommendation. Also since the study, Prior Things, The Artful Gallery and Angel’s Aura have opened, and Sweet and Sassy increased its offerings to include giftware, meeting the study’s requirement for specialty stores. Even with the downtown renovation wreaking havoc on roads and sidewalks, vacancy rates have dropped from 14 per cent to 10. The Arnprior Shopping Centre, once renovations are completed, will have a 2 per cent vacancy rate versus a previous 16. “The town continues to see steady residential growth with nearly 500 new residential units added since the completion of the Highway 417 extension,” Wilson said. “The increase in population of Arnprior’s trade area is important for attraction as our market size still remains too small for a number of re-

LINDSAY WILSON tailers. As Arnprior and surrounding areas’ populations increase, the attraction opportunities will also increase as we will fit a larger number of retailers population requirements.” The study determined need for an additional 60,000 sq. ft of home improvement store space in town. The Canadian Tire expansion into the mall took care of 35,000, but it will also leave behind 15,000 at its current location. The remaining 25,000 combined, reads the

report, should be picked up by Home Hardware, TSC or Rona; that or encourage a new store. The town continues to look for: • A new supermarket (or renovation and expansion of Metro and/or No Frills) of 50,000 sq. ft; • A 5,000 sq ft. produce store; • A department store; • Renovation and expansions of Home Hardware, TSC or Rona (25,000 sq. ft.): • Two shoe stores (10,0000 sq. ft. combined); • Children’s clothing store (5,000 sq. ft.); • One mid-priced men’s clothing store (3,000 sq. ft.). The shoe and clothing stores would fit into existing downtown storefronts, according to Wilson’s report, especially when the downtown revitalization is complete. Town grants to clean up facades and make stores accessible are also available. Since 2014, the town has given out $34,000 in community improvement plan (CIP) grants with private property

owners investing $800,000. On the ongoing issue of derelict properties, the report says the town has taken “pro-active action” to enforce clean up throughout town. Properties available to rent or own are also listed on the town’s website. On the jobs front, the report mentions office, knowledge-based, and assembly businesses. Since 2013, six have opened: Competition Composites, CCI Balconies, Madawaska Doors Show Room, a wholesale coffee roaster, Rumidifier and Electec Building Wiring Systems. “These businesses initially provided up to five new jobs each in the area for a current total increase of 13 and as they continue to add to their workforce as they grow.” There was no mention of businesses that moved from town, such as Gilk’s Signs and Trophies and the Chronicle-Guide. Nor was there a listing of businesses that closed, such as Mile High Parachute Club, Threads and Shreds, Hair Loom, Valley Granite and Tile, and Toew’s Tackle.

Options offered for Loggers Memory Project at Red Pine Bay John Carter

John.carter@metroland.com

A timely tribute to area loggers is going ahead despite it not being successful in receiving a Canada 150 grant. The Loggers Memory Project fits in well with the announcement last week that the Ottawa River is finally receiving heritage status. Coun. Heather Lang updated McNab-Braeside council on the project at its July 19, providing some estimated costs of a display at Red Pine Bay on the Ottawa River. Councillors expressed continued support for the project and encourage Lang to keep working on it and explore other grant opportunities. “Let’s keep the momentum going on this,” said Deputy Mayor Brian Armsden, adding that he admired Lang’s “persistence and passion” for the project. He suggested the memory project be part of a 10-year plan to rehabilitate the whole Red Pine area. “We should get input from residents and councillors on how to improve area,” he said. “We can make it a destination similar to Burnstown

Beach.” Mayor Tom Peckett said that if the park is to become more popular the township should do something about the lack of parking. The large number of vehicles parked along the road at the Riverfest and Canada Day celebrations “was not good,” he said. He said the township has a couple of acres of brush in the area that could be turned into safer parking. Lang’s presentation included five different scenarios for the Red Pine Bay portion of the project only, ranging in cost from $133,401 for the original vision to $84,494 for the least expensive. Money could be saved with shorter rails, fewer photographs and a different type of platform than first envisioned, she explained. Council agreed that another grant program is worth having the treasurer checking into, even if Lang feels the project is not likely to fit the criteria. Coun. Mark MacKenzie suggested the township should ask its neighbours, such as Horton and Arnprior, to support the project’s grant applications.

“They have a similar history and involvement in the logging industry,” he said. Their support could carry some weight … make this a regional issue.”

penditure of up to $3,000 to have three large donated White Pine logs carved into two benches and two sculptures. Councillors agreed that as the logs had been donated in good faith, they should be carved before they degraded too much to be useful. The logs have been lying behind

LOG CARVINGS

Council has approved the ex-

the public works building. One of the carvings could be placed at the entrance of the new municipal building and the other at Red Pine Bay. The benches would also likely be located at Red Pine Bay. The money for their carving is being taken out of the Red Pine Bay project budget.

Library celebrates year of growth Derek Dunn

derek.dunn@metroland.com

With 2015 in the books, the Arnprior Public Library could safely celebrate its return to options and actions. “It was a big year,” board of directors chairwoman Maureen Sly Havey told council at a recent meeting, “a year of growth and opportunities.” More visits to the library followed a renewed service contract with neighbouring McNab-Braeside township, as did an increase in circulation of materials (both physical and virtual), along with an expansion of programming. Music events included classical, blues, Celtic, country folk and young local talent, yielding 940 cultural attendees. Attendees for author readings are included in that number. Services include 131 homebound deliveries (20 people at any given time); 126 post secondary exam students; 94 technology

training sessions (for laptops, cellphones); and 1,097 room bookings (for 41 community groups). Usage is up almost 10 per cent over 2014 when it comes to items borrowed (107,082); library card holders include 2,823 from town and 1,229 from the township. Revenue sources includes 64 per cent from Arnprior and 20 per cent from contracting municipalities (primarily McNab-Braeside). Costs go to staffing at 79 per cent, followed by acquisitions, computers, and others. The budget actual was a little over $140,000, up from the year before of $131,000.

Renewable power co-op information sessions scheduled

Though still somewhat new to Ontario, the idea of community-level renewable energy has been quite successful across the pond in Europe. In countries like Germany, more than 50 per cent of renewable energy is generated by cooperatives and farmers. Similarly, in Denmark three-quarters of wind turbines are owned by cooperatives. Locally, the Ottawa Renewable Energy Coop (OREC) says its “empowers Eastern Ontario residents to support the growth of the local renewable energy sector through responsible, long-term investments that finance projects together as members of a democratic cooperative.” With 510 members already on board and 13 solar projects in its ever-expanding portfolio, OREC is now setting its sights on Renfrew County. The co-op is working towards building new projects west of Ottawa but it says it can’t be done without support from the community. The Co-op is holding two information sessions

in Renfrew County to discuss the benefits of community-owned renewable energy. The sessions will discuss trends in communityowned power in Ontario, the economic and societal benefits of cooperativelyowned projects, and the 5 Ws of OREC. A community-owned renewable power information night will be held tonight (Thursday) from 7 to 8 p.m. at the recreation centre at 67 Argyle St. South. There will be a second meeting in Eganville Monday, Aug. 8, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Legion, 57 Pontiac St. Everyone is welcome to join the free information sessions. Both locations are wheelchair accessible and refreshments will be provided. Organizers ask that participants register through Eventbrite to ensure there are adequate refreshments. Links to the event page can be found online at http:// www.orec.ca/renfrew and registration can also be done over the phone by calling toll-free 1-855338-OREC (6732).

OPINION

Connected to your community

A special place in Arnprior O

ur story last week about a family that cottages in White Lake by summer and wins Stanley Cups and goes in the first round of the NHL draft by winter has a subtext of celebrating Arnprior’s hockey rink. The Nick Smith Centre has come under some fire over the last few years. A noticeable drop in usage by outside hockey teams, a decline in registration for various sports, the high costs of operating an indoor swimming pool. It has led to speculation of converting the B pad to other recreational uses. Supporters are now able, with a user agreement with McNab-Braeside in place, to point out the civic centre can count on predictable funding. And declining enrolment – particularly for hockey – is a nationwide issue having to do with increased costs, changing interests (video games) and aging demographics. However, there should be no doubt that the magic and allure of the Nick Smith Centre continues to impress. Considered a daring move when built in the 1970s – a small town with two rinks under one roof ? – it continues to attract top talent. ‘The family that plays together’ gave readers a chance to meet Jakob Chychrun who went 16th overall in this year’s NHL draft. He plays Wednesday nights, for many summers now, at the Nick Smith Centre with his father, 1992 Stanley Cup champion Jeff Chychrun who has a nearby cottage, along with grandfather John.

It was a family story more than a hockey story. It was about people and place. Good people in a special place. We’ll set aside the wrong headedness of Pakenhockey Raider players vying for photos with Jakob and his friend Logan Brown, the Ottawa Senators first pick overall this year. Tsk, tsk. Neither of these boys, just setting out on their NHL careers, has won the Stanley Cup. It is our view that Jeff should have been the centre of attention. But we are confident the dad was even more pleased to know it was his son who enjoyed the admiration. The Nick Smith Centre has been home to many great players over the decades. Many home-grown Packer heroes have contributed to countless stories that serve as part of the foundation of our community. Fabulous displays of talent by visitors, such as that shown during the 2008 Telus Cup, combine with others who come for instruction at Paul and Lucas Lawson’s camp. Pro Skaters alone has taught P.K. Subban, Julien BriseBois, Braydon Coburn and others. Others come simply to take advantage of ice close to the Canadian Tire Centre. Nick Smith is much more than the bricks and mortar that makes up its physical presence. It is the heart of the community and should remain so for many years to come. That is why, when town council considers renovations and upgrades, it should do so safe in the knowledge that the civic centre holds a special place in the hearts of many Arnprior residents.

movements such as squats, lunges, pushing and pulling added to a daily walk can go a long way to helping you maintain and improve your body composition. Nutrition: your diet should emphasize the foods you need to be vibrant and healthy. Include quality proteins, healthy fats, abundant vegetables and fruits and foods naturally rich in fibre and micronutrients. One of the most common dietary deficiencies is not eating enough vegetables and fruits. If you aren’t eating seven to eight

servings of half a cup each per day, this is an excellent place to make a change. Take the opportunity this season provides to try locally grown vegetables and fruits. With the warmer weather make sure you have adequate hydration. Avoid sugary drinks and instead reach for some water. As a general rule of thumb your daily intake in ounces should be equal to your bodyweight divided by two. Sleep: the recommended amount of sleep for adults is seven-and-ahalf to nine hours per night. River’s heritage attributes well-documented: Hendrickson Continued from front

“We know the Ottawa is a vitally important river, the key travel route for our First Nations and for explorers, fur traders, settlers and loggers, and now all of Canada and the world will share in this knowledge and recognition,” said Hinsperger. He pointed out that thanks to the river the area is already known as the Whitewater Capital of Canada with its world-class whitewater rafting, kayaking and canoeing in the Rocher Fendu section in Whitewater Region. “As we approach the celebration of Canada 150th in 2017, this Canadian Heritage River designation of the Ottawa River is a powerful new promotional tool for us to promote all the recreational and heritage features of the Ottawa River, and all our other tributary waterways, tourism businesses, museums, artists and communities,” added OVTA manager Alastair Baird.

Hendrickson the Ottawa River has symbolic significance in that it brings together the country’s three founding peoples – the native Indians, French and English. The watershed is seen as a “pretty special place” both nationally and globally, he added. He noted that a large number of people had worked hard for years to bring about the designation. The Ottawa Riverkeeper organization was a strong supporter and always talked it up at its gala gatherings, he said. LEN HOPKINS

The area’s former Liberal MP Len Hopkins chaired a broad-based committee that has argued for the designation since 2003, he added. Hendrickson said its research was excellent, well documenting the historical and geographical significance of the river. While the designation only includes the Ontario side of the river, Hendrick-

son is confident that Quebec will follow suit with some sort of heritage recognition. He called the designation more a celebration of history and recognition of the importance of the river rather than the implementation of new rules to protect it. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant has voiced opposition to the designation in the past, expressing concern that it could result in regulations that stifle development and compromise property rights. In Renfrew for a meeting July 28, she reserved comment, saying she hadn’t seen details of the announcement. The granting of the heritage designation, rumoured since the Liberal government was elected last year, was proclaimed in a news release July 28. The joint federalOntario announcement designating the Ontario portion of the Ottawa River as a Canadian Heritage River “for its outstanding cultural heritage values” was made

A county delegation has asked to meet with provincial Infrastructure Minister Bob Chiarelli at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) convention Aug. 14 to 17 to discuss possible a speed-up in the funding for the four-laning. The county stresses that it is committed to “keep working with local, provincial and federal partners to ensure that this important infrastructure investment is made as soon as possible.” The county has been attempting to obtain federal support for the project too, using the argument that the route is part of the TransCanada Highway. Cheryl Gallant said the Government of Canada’s hands are tied until the province writes it into the five- or even 10-year plan. “We have to be asked,” said the MP for Renfrew-Nippissing-Pembroke. “My constituents feel the Highway four-laning is very important. I think the majority of my constituents want it done, so I’m supportive of that. But it is the province that has to make it happen.” Yakabuski has also sent a letter to Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca. “I want to speak with the minister as soon as possible to see what are the next steps to advance this project,” he said. The news isn’t all bad though, he said. “I did receive some encouraging news that it wasn’t a turn-down, but it wasn’t included in this plan,” said Yakabuski. The County of Renfrew and Yakabuski have been advocating for an expedited expansion of the four-laning for a number of

years. Yakabuski knows the county has made a strong case for the importance of the highway expansion. “We know there has been work done, some being done right now, but the progress is not satisfactory ... when one part is done the next should start,” said Yakabuski. The county’s first presentation to the province was made in 2008 and after further research it submitted a formal request in 2012 to accelerate the extension west of Arnprior. Two meetings followed with ministers of transportation in 2013 with more get-togethers in Ottawa and Toronto featuring various levels of government. The county stresses the project has a number of benefits, such as helping reduce strain on the highways around Toronto, improving road safety, enhancing regional capacity, and unlocking positive regional economic development across Eastern and Northern Ontario. Yakabuski also touts the benefits. “It’s all about safety and economic development for Renfrew County.” Phase two of the project out of Arnprior is seeing the four lanes extended from Campbell to Scheel Drive. Phase three would see the expansion through to Calabogie Road and phase four to the far side of Renfrew, across the Bonnechere River to Bruce Street. There has been a push by some Upper Valley municipal politicians to have the fourlaning from Pembroke to Petawawa become a priority, but county council has reiterated that the project should move in logical fashion up the Valley.

TRANSPORT ROUTE FOR MILLENNIA

The government news release points out the Ottawa River travels through the heart of Algonquin land and has been used as a thoroughfare and transportation route for millennia. Known as the ‘original Trans-Canada highway’, the river was “invaluable to the economic and political growth of the region during the fur and timber eras and continues to be an essential economic engine today.” Under the leadership of Parks Canada, the Canadian Heritage Rivers System (CHRS) is a joint federalprovincial-territorial initiative that gives national recognition to Canadian rivers of extraordinary natural, cultural and recreational significance. It promotes, conserves

and enhances Canada’s river heritage, helps to ensure that Canada’s leading rivers are managed in a sustainable manner, and encourages the public to enjoy and appreciate them. “Our nation’s capital owes its long history and indeed its very existence to this great river,” said McKenna. “As a vibrant part of Ottawa’s tourism industry today, and the heartland of the Algonquin First Nations, the Ottawa River has a fascinating and diverse history and continues to provide cultural and business opportunities for the communities along its banks. I am thrilled this river is getting the recognition it so rightly deserves.” “The Province of Ontario is delighted that the Ottawa River has now fully joined the Canadian Heritage Rivers System,” said McGarry. “This Canadian Heritage River designation will provide the opportunity for communities both large and small, from Hawkesbury to Haileybury to join together with the Algonquin First Nation in celebration of the Ottawa’s rich cultural heri-

tage and its world class recreational activities.” The designation covers the entire course of the Ontario portion of the river through the Ottawa Valley and the Renfrew County and all the way upriver to Lake Timiskaming and downriver to the Quebec border at East Hawkesbury, a length of 590 kilometres. If, as expected, Quebec assigns its own heritage designation to its portion of the river, adding the 681 kilometres of the ‘Outaouais’ that flow entirely in Quebec, it will mean all 1,271 kilometres of the river will have heritage status. There are 42 Canadian Heritage Rivers (39 designated and another three nominated) across Canada. When a river is designated, a management plan is put in place that describes voluntary actions to promote, celebrate and conserve the river. The designation will provide communities with a platform to promote their region and the “incredible history, nature and recreational opportunities” associated with the Ottawa River.

Kathy and Kevin Marshall have expanded their involvement O’Brien theatres in Arnprior and Renfrew to include ownership of the Skylight Drive-In in the Pembroke area.

Retro nostalgia brings back drive-in As progress pushes the world forward, a trend has emerged to look back. For many once popular activities, what goes around truly does come around again. The drive-in movie theatre is a great example. In its heyday, almost every town had a drive-in where families gathered and young people enjoyed social outings. But the onset of a multi-media world eventually caused people to turn away from drive-ins and most disappeared. Now a resurgence of retro thinking has brought the spotlight back to the drive-in. People of all ages are flocking to see first-run movies from the comfort of their vehicle. With the latest in digital projection equipment and high-tech audio that plays through car radios, the drive-in has more appeal than a regular theatre. People get the comfort and privacy of their own vehicle. The number of drive-ins is on the rise in Ontario. There are now 24 theatres in Ontario, including in major markets like Toronto, London and Hamilton. In the Upper Ottawa Valley, Kathy and Kevin Marshall, well-known for their involvement in the O’Brien theatres in Arnprior and Renfrew, have kept the tradition alive at the Skylight Drive-In at 199 Forest Lee Rd. in the Pembroke area. Originally built in the heyday of drive-in theatres in 1954, the land was severed off farmland owned by the McLaughlin family. Despite setbacks and changes in entertainment habits, Matt McLaughlin continued to operate the drivein until the Marshalls bought it in 2014. “He actually sold it to me over the phone,” Kevin recalls. “It was refitted and remodeled and opened July 1, 2014, all on a verbal agreement.” As owners of the O’Brien Theatre in Arnprior, Kevin and Kathy have over four decades of theatre operations experience. Kathy has been the general manager at the O’Brien Theatre-Renfrew since 1999, and they are both very enthusiastic drive-In theatre goers. The first order of business was to install a new Christie 2230 digital projector along with the industry standard DoReMi server to get the largest and clearest picture in the Ottawa Valley. The Skylight Drive-In is open Thursday to Sunday in the spring and fall, and seven nights a week in July and August. Many people come early to visit with friends while their children enjoy the kids’ playground. The concession booth has also been upgraded with a fresh coat of paint and new appliances in the kitchen. “They can Dr. Alan Franzmann make it a picnic Dr. Corrine Motluk with great food from our conces- Complete Family Eye Care Quality Eyewear & Lenses sion booth. fries, fresh curd and delicious gravy,” says Kevin. “Then, relax and enjoy the movie in the comfort of your car on your sound system, with digital clarity in sound and picture. “We are totally committed to providing great family entertainment for a decent price. From as low as $14 for adults and $6 for kids 6 and over, this is the cheapest entertainment around!” As the drive-in’s popularity continues to grow, the Marshalls are considering adding a second screen in years to come. They use the lot for RV and boat storage in the winter months to help offset costs. “We’ll do all we can to run the best drive-in. With good weather, and community support, the Pembroke Skylight Drive-In should keep this 60-year-old tradition alive for a whole generation to enjoy.” Kevin suggests packing chairs or a blanket to sit on. “You can watch the movie from the inside of your car, but often it is more fun to sit outside of the vehicle. If your back seat pulls out, you can use that as well.” Bring a portable radio and extra batteries to avoid running down your car battery. And don’t forget to bring bug spray and/or mosquito coils. Kevin suggests keeping your windshield fog-free by cleaning it beforehand and bringing some anti-fog spray used for hockey visors to wipe down the inside before the show starts. The drive-in theatre is one of only three in Eastern Ontario, and the only one in Renfrew County. “People love the nostalgic experience of going to the drive-in. And the picture and sound quality rival any theatre,” Kevin promises. “Drive in for a great night out.”

Cadets take advantage of camp Several Arnprior army cadets are at camps this summer in various parts of the country. The many training centres across Canada are part of the Cadets family, with young Canadians from coast to coast learning about citizenship and leadership while making lifelong friends. Army Cadets get involved in ceremonial military events and citizenship activities that allow them to connect to their Canadian heritage. They develop a great sense of pride and discipline through their involvement in a hierarchical system that allows them to hone their leadership skills as they grow older and they learn to care for younger cadets. Summer Company has been administered by Enterprise Renfrew

County for 15 years with 116 youth participating. Business consultant, Colleen Sadler, says it offers a wonderful incentive to young people who are interested in being entrepreneurial. “We know that small business makes up the greatest percentage of new jobs that are being created in Renfrew County and the Summer Company Program helps participants gain real life work experience in business that is meaningful for youth that have entrepreneurial aspirations,” she said. “It gives them their first exposure to running a business and we have had many success stories in recent years as program participants have gone on to post-secondary education with the intention of eventually starting their own business, or have grown their summer company business into a full time career.” By participating in the program, participants will receive business training, mentoring and assistance from local community leaders that will support them in the day-today operation of their enterprise. Sadler calls it, “grassroots job creation, as these young minds are being nurtured and encouraged to pursue their dreams of establishing their own business.”

that sees more and more police time taken up dealing with family violence. A man was charged with two counts of assault, being unlawfully in a dwelling, and possession of cocaine.

Another man was charged with assault and a third with impaired driving and driving over 80 mgs A woman was charged with assault and uttering a threat. OPP stress to anyone involved in or knowing about an abusive re-

SHOP LOCAL · BUY LOCAL · SUPPORT LOCAL THINK LOCAL · GROW LOCAL Burnstown couple take over Smart-Care Clothing After 20 years Smart-Care Clothing company founders Les and Rossie Smart have decided to retire. It was a hard decision for them to make, but once they found Bill and Karen Colbert of Burnstown they knew they were leaving their business in good hands. As a nurse Rossie saw a need in the Ottawa Valley to provide good quality adaptive clothes for people with mobility issues. She looked until she found just the right companies to make her clothes to the stan-

dard she was looking for, and then she and Les set out in their car to sell directly to their customers. Over the years they expanded, bought a van and a trailer and travelled all over the Ottawa and Seaway valleys to sell much needed clothes for active seniors, and adaptive clothes at long term care and retirement homes. Along the way they made numerous friends and had many repeat customers. As time went on, they found themselves

looking towards retirement but were reluctant to sell their company to a big corporation that would no longer look after their customers in the way they have become accustomed. PERFECT BUYER FOUND

That’s when the Smarts decided that Karen Colbert had all of the qualities they were looking for in a new owner for their ‘baby’. They met at Island View Retirement

Suites in Arnprior where Karen worked for about 11 years, serving as the life enrichment co-ordinator. Bill also works in Armprior. The sale happened last November, but Les and Rossie hit the road again with Karen for the spring season. They spent many hours coaching and teaching Karen so she would be able to continue the business as they had. See ADAPTIVE, Page 18

Less than a month after taking over Milano Pizzeria, the new owners were undergoing a near complete kitchen upgrade. “It’s been absolutely crazy,” said Kris Gordon. “The response in the last three weeks has been insane.” Gordon, along with employee and long-time friend Faisal ‘Faz’ Hechme, were hard at work July 21 with a new walk-in fridge, double oven, double-freezer and much more. The place used to run on four refrigerators meant for pop. It will soon be equipped to handle many orders of various items. Now that the Madawaska Street pizzeria has the full Milano chain menu, business has picked up. Deep-fried cheese curds – locally sourced from St. Albert – are a huge hit. Lots of social media comments are calling it the best pizza in town, and praising the friendly and upbeat service providers. It seems Gordon has no reason to regret opening the door under his name last Canada Day. “I always wanted to open up my own pizzeria,” he said. “I really like the Milano franchise. What flies like a Hummingbird but looks like a Bee? Nature is full of surprises. There are squirrels that glide (Flying Squirrels), frogs that climb trees (Gray Tree Frogs), and snakes that play dead (Hog-nosed Snakes). In Nature there are also in many animals that look like something that they are not. Gardens are wonderful places to see fascinating insects. Hover Flies are common visitors and many are yellow and black, the same colour as bees and wasps. However, unlike their colourful look-alikes, Hover Flies don’t sting, and by bearing the stinging insects’ warning colours, the harmless flies gain inexpensive protection. One of my favourite insects is one that is often mistaken for other animals, usually not an insect. It is a moth, but one that neither flies at night nor sits on screen windows illuminated by lights. This unusual insect flies in the daytime and hovers at flowers. Its size and flying ability make it look surprisingly like a well-known bird that also hovers at flowers. The insect is a Hummingbird Clearwing and it behaves just like the namesake bird. Clearwings are a type of Sphinx

Moth and there are actually two species in our area. The Hummingbird Clearwing and the Snowberry Clearwing look very much alike and because their wings move so rapidly it is often difficult, sometimes near impossible, to see the subtle differences in wing venation that make separating the two species an easy task. However, a good view at the moth from behind usually provides sufficient clues to its identity. Snowberry Clearwings have a pale back (thorax) with a dark stripe running down the middle, and their abdomen sports a yellow band near its black tip.

Lions SEE YOU THERE

A Lions Club of Perth Event in support of local causes

Perth Fairgrounds

Hummingbird Clearwings have a uniformly pale brown back and on their abdomen resides a chestnut-brown band with a darker mark down the middle. In addition to these markings, the dark edges bordering Hummingbird Clearwings’ hind wings tend to be wider than those of Snowberry Clearwings. Clearwing moths are sometimes mistaken for Bumble Bees because they are round and fuzzy and visit flowers. However, when Bumble Bees get nectar or pollen, they land on the flowers and their wings go motionless. Clearwing moths drink while they are hovering and their wings are a blur; a Clearwing sitting at rest is a sight not commonly seen by human eyes. Like other nectar-drinking moths (and butterflies), Clearwings have a long, extensible tongue. When not in use, the tongue is coiled like a rolled-up garden hose and safely tucked away. While we regularly see the adult moths in our gardens, the caterpillars tend to be less visible. As larvae, the two species dine on a variety of plants with Hummingbird Clearwing caterpillars

Frauds, domestics, impaireds keep OPP hopping Local OPP are continuing to be kept busy investigating impaired driving complaints, domestic disputes and frauds this summer. A 28-year-old McNab-Braeside man is facing charges after a single motor vehicle collision on Russett Drive in early July. A witness called to report hearing the collision at 3:15 a.m. and the male driver ran away. Officer attended and caught the man in a

nearby backyard. He was arrested for impaired driving. Following breath tests at the detachment, the man was charged with impaired driving, driving over 80 mgs and failing to comply with a probation order. He was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on Aug. 3. OPP officers investigated two dozen domestic disputes in two weeks in mid-July (see page 15). A variety of fraud attempts continued to be reported to RenfrewArnprior OPP. One victim provided a credit card number to the fraudster who claimed he would unlock the victim’s computer. One man uttered a forged docu-

ment when he passed an altered cheque. The victim provided cash to the suspect not realizing the cheque was not valid. Police encourage the public to learn more about trends in frauds, how to spot them and how to protect yourself at the Canadian AntiFraud Centre. Call them at 1-888495-8501 or at www.antifraudcentre.ca. BUSINESS SCAM

Several area OPP detachments are investigating complaints into a business in Renfrew County accepting payments and not provid-

ing the goods. Consumers are often looking for a great deal, but some deals are truly too good to be true, warn the OPP. “The old saying buyer beware is valid.” To protect yourself from businesses that may be less than credible, the OPP suggests following some, or all, of these best practices: • Contact the Better Business Bureau, Consumer Affairs Office or the Competition Bureau about a business or seller you wish to deal with. Check to see if any complaints have been lodged against the business. • Do not send the full amount of payment for the product or service

before receiving anything. Reputable businesses ask for a down payment, not the full amount up front. • When buying anything online keep copies of all communications and transactions. Only pay using secure sites. • Do not give your personal information including credit card numbers to someone you don’t know. Only provide credit card numbers to someone you trust and when absolutely necessary. Consider other payment options. To get help and report a scam, contact the local Consumer Affairs Office or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. If you have suffered a loss because of someone’s dishonesty or deception, contact the local police service. For the OPP call 1-88-3101122 anywhere in Ontario.

Arnprior Special Olympics

Arnprior Special Olympics held its 14th annual Special Olympics Golf Tournament at the Madawaska Golf Club on July 8. What a great turnout it was. The weather was amazing and everyone had a great day of golf. A great big thank you goes out to all of the sponsors for the donations that made this day possible, as well as all of the businesses who did the hole in ones or donated items for the raffle baskets and silent auction. Without their donations and time, we wouldn’t have been as successful as we were. Arnprior Special Olympics thanks the countless volunteers and the planning committee that gave their time to ensure this event was a great success. This is one of Arnprior Special Olympics biggest fundraisers and without the support of our great community, it wouldn’t be the success that it is and our athletes and coaches wouldn’t get to do things like go to Provincials and National competitions. To send one athlete to Provincials, it costs $200 an athlete. To send an athlete to Nationals, it costs $1,000 per athlete. Without the generosity of our

great community, sponsors, volunteers, parents, our athletes wouldn’t have these great opportunities, including tournaments, swim meets, track meets, etc. We hope to see you all at our 15th annual Golf Tournament next year. In May 2016, some of our Special Olympics athletes and coaches headed to Provincials in Guelph. The teams and their coaches worked very hard to get there and we are all so proud of them. The Arnprior Special Olympics basketball team, The Cougars, have been together for some time. We have had new players coming in and some players leave over the years. But the core athletes have been together for a good while. The players who made the provincial qualifying team are Joshua Balanaser (pick-up from the Ottawa team), Kenney Jensen, Joshua Kuehl, Robert Mainprize, Greg Rorwick, Paul Rorwick, Evan Thompson, Lindsay Trafford and Alex Regan. In the first couple of games, the players did their best but came up short of a win. Then they really picked it up. The next few games were won. They played against Thunder Bay and won 22-14. Then against Durham and again we won 26-14. The next day the team played Welland and won 18-10 which put

The basketball team coached by Renee Stewart, Bryan Terrell and Matt Simpson and made up of Joshua Balanaser, Kenney Jensen, Joshua Kuehl, Robert Mainprize, Greg Rorwick, Paul Rorwick, Evan Thompson, Lindsay Trafford and Alex Regan won gold at the Provincials. our team in first place and off to the finals. Our team played Thunder Bay again and secured an amazing win of 29-16. The cheers from our coaches, parents and friends were amazing. The athletes represented Arnprior Special Olympics with a lot of heart and made all of us (coaches, parents and friends) so proud of them. Coaches Renee Stewart,

Bryan Terrell and Matt Simpson shared a lot of high fives and tears as they watched their team that had worked so hard the last year come out on top and secure first-place gold at the provincial games. It was very emotional times watching the athletes get their gold medals. The Arnprior Special Olympics Swim team also went to the Provincials along with their basketball

friends. Barb Cosman (head swim coach) says work for the Provincial Games swimmers began in early September 2015 with dryland training and cross-training before moving into the pool in December. With a late start to the swimming season, each athlete trained extremely hard over the winter months between swimming, weight lifting, etc. to be fully prepared mentally and physically to attend the Special Olympics Spring Games as part of the Eastern Ontario team held in Guelph May 26 to 29. The Games are the qualifier for the National Summer Games to be held in 2018. Athletes who may qualify won’t be informed until 2017. All of the coaches from the swimming program continue to be amazed at how hard each of these athletes has worked. The results of this amazing effort and dedication to their swimming are reflected in their results – and medals. Congratulations to Kaity – 2 Golds, 1 Silver and a Personal Best; Harris – 2 Silvers and 2 Bronze; Brad – 1 Gold, 3 Silver and a Personal Best; Gregory - 1 Gold, 2 Silver, 1 Bronze. As coaches, we couldn’t be prouder. See OLYMPICS, page 22

At the Taste of Syria fundraiser – for a refugee family now living in Arnprior – Stephan Nesrallah sings a traditional love song. One lyric translates as “Under the pomegranate tree my love spoke to me.” About 25 people gathered at the Legion in Constance Bay on Saturday afternoon July 16 for the Anglican Parish sponsored event, including Kanata-Carleton MP Karen McCrimmon and Ward 5 councillor Eli El-Chantiry. The parish has raised about $4,000; their goal is $5,000. “Keep your heart open, and look to help in little ways,” Nesrallah said. “Peace upon you.”

McLEAN - In loving memory of our Dad, Ray McLean, August 7, 2015. He never looked for praises He was never one to boast He just went on quietly working For the ones he loved the most. His dreams were seldom spoken His wants were very few And most of the time his worries Went unspoken too. He was there‌. A firm foundation Through all our storms of life A sturdy hand to hold on to In times of stress and strife. A true friend we could turn to When times were good or bad One of our greatest blessings The man that we called Dad. Love all your kids

McLEAN – In memory of my loving husband, Ray McLean, August 7, 2015. Those special memories of you Will always bring a smile If only I could have you Back for just a little while Then we could sit and talk again Just like we used to do You always meant so very much And always will do too The fact that you’re no longer Here will always cause me pain You’re forever in my heart ‌until we meet again Love forever Libby

Summer weekends were kept busy at Mary’s house

On most hot summer weekends, we could expect any number of cousins, aunts and uncles to find their way out to the farm in Northcote. Mother said it was to escape the heat of the city. We never knew who was coming, but Mother was always prepared. Extra loaves of bread, sticky buns and pies filled the bake table and the narrow shelf underneath it. No one would go away hungry! If they came on Saturday and stayed over until Sunday, that meant my three brothers would have to bed down in the tent in the yard, giving up the back bedroom upstairs. Of course, my cousin Richard, a couple years younger than I was, was thrilled to be able to sleep outside with the older boys in a tent. His mother, my aunt Lily, protective of her only child, could be heard slipping out the kitchen door a couple times through the night to make sure nothing had happened to her son, which, of course, would waken everyone up. Especially Audrey and me who had been moved to the narrow creton couch in the kitchen. Of course, as soon as the door was open, our old Collie dog Sport would start to bark, and the whole house would be wide awake. But no one seemed to mind, be-

Mary Cook’s Memories BY MARY COOK

cause having a house full of company on a weekend broke the monotony on the farm. The only problem was that Aunt Vanetta, a devout Catholic, insisted on being driven into Renfrew on Sunday morning for Mass, and I wasn’t sure what good it did, because Uncle Johnny, could be heard swearing a blue streak all the way out to his car, and it was a known fact he refused to darken the door of the church, but sat out Mass in his car, blowing blue smoke out the window from his ever-present cigar. And the weekend was like one long party! There was always lots of music and singing, and Uncle Johnny was always telling jokes that Mother laughed at but said weren’t fit for the ears of young children. Aunt Vanetta was like a little bird, small and dainty, with a cloud of white hair and the bluest eyes I had ever seen. Her daughter Aunt Lily was tall and stately, and even though she was coming out to a farm, she arrived wearing white gloves and a beautiful hat, and we never saw the

same one twice. I used to dream that she was a relative to the Queen, because of the hats she wore. And I was sure she was pretty rich too ... wasn’t she the telephone operator at the Chateau Laurier hotel? What elegance, and what an important person she was, I would think. My cousin Richard was game for anything. He loved playing in the hay mow, which just happened to be one of my favourite places on the farm, too. We would climb the little ladder in the end of the cow byre and run madly through the hay and then push a pile of it down through the opening in the floor, and jump down the hole, and then do the whole exercise over again. We would be covered with bits and pieces of hay and chaff, and when we had enough, Richard would go find his mother to get a hanky to blow the hay dust out of his nose. I never used a hanky, except at school or church. The cuff of whatever I was wearing suited just fine. Mealtime was a challenge for Mother. Everyone couldn’t sit at the old pine table, so two planks were brought in and put on the backs of chairs, covered with a heavy quilt and then a couple flour bag sheets, and the overflow ate there. By the time Mother had the meal

ready, the kitchen would be like a blasting furnace, but Aunt Vanetta and Aunt Lily said it was cooler than in Ottawa, and dug right in mashing potatoes, making gravy, or cutting pies. We younger ones had to set the tables, fill the glasses with water, and make sure everyone had a chair to sit on. The weekend passed far too quickly to suit me. By late Sunday, the company was ready to go home. And I often wondered if they were as rich as I thought they were. Because before the car left the yard, boxes would be tied to the running board, and they would be filled with meat from the smoke house, a couple cleaned chickens, and bags of vegetables from the garden. Aunt Vanetta always fell into Mother’s arms before she climbed into the car, thanking her and saying something, which at the time meant nothing to me. She’d say, “Thank you Mabel ... you’ve saved our lives. We’ll sure eat well for a long time to come.” Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? This week’s puzzle answers in next week’s issue

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 It may take a little extra effort to solve a particularly puzzling problem this week, Aries. It’s not an insurmountable obstacle, just one that takes patience. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, all of your efforts thus far in relation to personal challenges have been well worth the sacrifices you have made. Keep doing what you are doing. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you cannot control the actions of others all of the time, but you can change the way you react to certain situations. Take time to develop a response. CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, you will have to adapt when your schedule gets turned upside down. Let others see how capable you are by modifying the situation as needed. LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, an unconventional approach to a problem may see things fall into Here’s How It Works: place. While others are following one path, you’ll be marching to the beat of a different drummer. Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric Virgo, it’s time to get your head out of the clouds for a little bit. Focus clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! on the priorities in your life, which may include family and work responsibilities.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Friends may prove a distraction this week, Libra. It will take a lot of energy to focus on what you need to accomplish rather than getting sucked into other plans.
