During a visit to Arnprior July 30, Renfrew-NipissingPembroke MP Cheryl Gallant wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t say whether she expected a federal election to be called on the weekend. But she did say she was ready to hit the campaign trail. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to speculate, but weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re ready â&#x20AC;Ś my teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in place,â&#x20AC;? the Conservative MP said at Arnprior town hall where she announced a Canada 150 grant. Her re-election team is set to spring into action and her campaign signs are at the ready, she added. Asked if she was looking forward to a longer than usual campaign, she would only say she will be happy to have the campaign officially begin as there has been plenty of electioneering already. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Actually, we tend to operate in campaign mode most of the time anyway,â&#x20AC;? she noted. Gallant was first elected the ridingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s MP in 2000 and has been re-elected four times by large margins. Attempting to unseat her this time are NDP candidate Dan McCarthy, a labour lawyer from Burnstown, and the Liberalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Jeff Lehoux, a retired combat medic from Renfrew. Both have been touring the riding and bringing up issues in news releases for the past couple of months.

But I’m grateful for all the memories that will have a place in my heart forever.”

Arnprior town hall is getting a lift from Canada’s 150th birthday. Town officials found out last week that they will be receiving a $32,634 Canada 150 grant to make town hall more accessible. The grant will pay for one-third of an upgrade that will see a lift installed at town hall to improve access to the busy second floor. Mayor David Reid said the grant will pay for one-third of a $98,000 accessibility project the town will implement next year. As well as the lift, the improvements will include installing an accessible bathroom on the second floor and lowering the counters in the clerk’s office. It will make it easier for handicapped and mobility challenged people to do business at town hall, Reid said. It will also enable council to hold more public meetings in council chambers instead of moving them to the more accessible fire hall building or the Nick Smith Centre. The improvements will be scheduled for next year and be completed in time for Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017. Reid said the grant will be a “great help” in assisting the town meet its obligations to making the town hall more accessible. He noted the town had already made visual and sound improvements in council chambers to improve accessibility there.

Ottawa solar energy co-op Solar energy response mixed expands into Renfrew county Staff

An Ottawa green energy co-op is seeking opportunities in neighbouring municipalities, including those in Renfrew and Lanark counties. Ottawa Renewable Energy Co-op (OREC) members unanimously approved recently a change to its boundaries, making the co-op’s model available to residents of Eastern Ontario to invest in local renewable energy initiatives. Residents from the Counties of Lanark, Renfrew, Leeds and Grenville, Prescott and Russell, Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry, and Frontenac and Lennox & Addington can now join and participate in OREC. “Over the last three years OREC intentionally restricted ourselves to projects and membership within the City of Ottawa; our inten-

tion is to be a community-focused organization,” explained OREC operations manager Janice Ashworth in a news release. “Now that we have established our business model, the membership has approved making it available to other residents of Eastern Ontario. It is OREC’s desire that renewable energy generation in this region be owned by its community members.” The co-op launched its fourth shareholder offering recently and is seeking to raise $1.7 million to invest in the six Ottawa solar rooftop projects that it says will be producing power by mid-September. The buildings involved are barns in Dunrobin and Manotick Station, three French schools and the Hovey Industries building in Gloucester. See CO-OPS, Page 5

Arnprior and McNab-Braeside may be shying away from getting involved in solar energy projects, but Renfrew is embracing the new technology. The town approved a contract on July 21 to have its Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre and Water Filtration Plant outfitted with solar panels. Renfrew is partnering with iSolara in the project, which is going forward in conjunction with a roof replacement at Ma-te-Way. The company will design and install a 152-KW FIT 3.0 Photovoltaic solar system at the activity centre and a 66 KW FIT 3.0 Photovoltaic solar system at the Water Filtration Plant.

Revenue generated from the solar projects will be a good non-taxation source of funds to pay for the new roof at Ma-Te-Way and contribute new money for the water fund, say officials. The cost of the contract is about $1.2 million. On the same evening, McNab-Braeside councillors had a lengthy discussion over the pros and cons of entering into such an agreement. In the end council felt there were too many unknowns and risks to go forward under the tight deadlines of the latest provincial FIT incentive green energy program, which is geared toward municipalities and co-ops. Arnprior has also considered solar panels for some of its roofs, but decided it doesn’t make sense until the roofs need replacing.

Town gets money for water, roads Staff

The series of pre-federal election funding announcements continued last Friday with two major allocations to the Town of Arnprior. News releases from Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant announced that the town is receiving $107,333 to help remove lead from its water and $234,944.23 in federal gas tax money for im-

provements on Bridge Street and Second Avenue. That work was done early this year. For the water project, the federal government is contributing one-third of the $322,000 cost through the Small Community Fund portion of the New Building Canada Fund. Calling it a worthwhile projet, Gallant said that “there is nothing more important to public health that the qual-

ity of the water piped into our homes and businesses. “The funding announced today will ensure the cleanliness of water in Arnprior for the foreseeable future,” she added. The Town qualified for the water filtration project under the Small Communities Fund. The advanced water treatment system stops the corrosion of lead in underground pipes in the municipality. Long-time skydiving company to close down Derek Dunn

A staple business for more than 20 years in Arnprior, Mile High Parachuting, has grounded itself. Company owner Buck Whalley sat down with airport manager and town councillor Dan Lynch on the morning of Sunday, July 25, to break the news. The business would close in 90 days. Whalley, who could not be reached by phone, told Lynch that Transport Canada performed an inspection about six weeks ago. Everything was fine on the safety side, Lynch said, but when

it came to red tape – it proved too onerous for Whalley. “There were a number of discrepancies, nothing safety-related. He said enough is enough,” Lynch said. “It was a lot of paperwork to provide. It was going to be a nightmare.” Mile High brought clients in from across Eastern Ontario to the local airport for the three kilometre-high skydiving. Economic spinoffs for resturants, gas stations and more in town will suffer somewhat. But it is the municipally-owned airport that is going to feel it most. Lynch said Mile High was one of its top cus-

tomers. The airport will lose $10,000 or more a year is fuel profit alone. He doesn’t anticipate any difficulty renting building space to another tenant. But the two-bay garage might prove more difficult. “It’s not going to cripple us, but it’s going to

STOP “PUSSY-FOOTING” AROUND!

Part One

Feeling Sorry for Yourself? We’ve all done that…”feeling sorry for ourselves”… and the world all of the sudden looks quite different. Not a happy, easy go lucky place anymore. When we look around, everybody else seems to be having a great time laughing and being engaged in conversations. “Feels I am like a magnet…pushing everyone around me away or make them angry…every day!” said a patient. If this sounds familiar, here is a story for you: I’ve been treating a lady who is legally blind and even though we were able to get her eyesight back so far about 25% so she can start seeing again a little bit, some colour and more and more details, it’s long not enough to stay and live by herself. So a few years ago her daughter convinced her to move in with her and her husband. Even though ﬁnancially she paid her dues, she couldn’t get out of the rut feeling inadequate, not appreciated and actually a huge burden. She felt weaker and weaker as she had lost her independence and over time was afraid to open her mouth as anything she’d say was countered and ended up in a yelling match from her daughter. More and more her guilt, shame and insecurity set in that she even got sick to her stomach, couldn’t eat and was shaking from head to toe. She said: “I cant go on like that! It’s killing me!” We shifted the focus of her treatment to help her grow a “back-bone” again. It took a little while, but last week she was a new person. “I am sick and tired of “pussyfooting” around and haven’t been putting up with the shit here at home!” “Yeah” I thought “Awesome” she ﬁnally grew a back-bone. I couldn’t help myself smile. She was beyond excitement and happiness that she found her “voice” again and that didn’t mean that they both now have “yelling” matches…no…not at all! She is capable of being emotionally detached enough and above the situation so to speak, to not let anyone mess with her and doesn’t feel guilty or lesser than others anymore. With her newly gained sovereignty she giggly said: “The funny part is, they even listen to me now…and I don’t have to raise my voice! Five drivers nabbed for impaired driving Renfrew-Arnprior OPP charged five drivers with impaired driving from July 15 to 23. On Saturday, July 18 at 6:18 a.m., OPP officers were dispatched to a single vehicle collision on Highway 417 at White Lake Road. The investigation revealed the male driver had fallen asleep, drove into the median and rolled over. OPP report the driver had been drinking and refused to provide a sample of his breath to the officers for a roadside al-

cohol screening test. As a result, a 38-year-old Ottawa man was charged with failing or refusing to provide a breath sample. He was released on an appearance notice for court in Renfrew on Aug. 26. OPP Const. Carlvin Burgins investigated. Another driver, a 27-yearold Ottawa man, faces impaired driving charges after police were tipped off by someone seeing him drive erractically through the Arnprior Wendy’s drive-thru July 23.

A 49-year-old Horton man was charged with charged with impaired driving and driving over 80 mgs after his 2013 GMC Sierra pick-up truck rolled over several times on Mullins Road in Horton at about 11:50 a.m. July 15. The driver was sent to hospital where the breath tests were taken. It is the second major crash the man has been involved in in the past couple of months. Wildman will not be able to attend work at town hall for about three months while he recovers and rehabilitates, but he will be in touch regularly with his staff and council.

A German visitor to the Arnprior area has lost his wallet. The wallet’s been found and now the Renfrew-Arnprior OPP are seeking the owner. A good Samaritan turned in a wallet found on the side of River Road west of Arnprior to the Arnprior OPP detachment on Wednesday, July 29. It is a men’s brown leather wallet, containing Canadian cash and Euros. The identification in the wallet belongs to a German citizen, but police have been unable to locate the owner in Canada. The big question mark is whether former MP Hec Clouthier will run again. The Liberal MP who was upset by Gallant 15 years ago, Clouthier ran as in Independent last time and came second. He has indicated he would seriously consider another run, particularly if it appears it will be a close three-way race nationally. That could potentially give an Independent MP more power, he maintained.

Meanwhile, the Green Party of Canada expects to have a candidate in place within two weeks, said regional organizer Jonathan Halasz. He said at least two people have expressed interest in the nomination, but wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t say if they are residents of the riding. If there are others, they should email him at jonathan.halasz@ greenparty.ca, he said. Late last week, rumours swirled that Prime Minister Stephen Harper would call an Oct. 19 election on the long August

weekend (after press deadline). If he does, the 11-week campaign would be the longest in almost 80 years. The last two federal campaigns have been the minimum 37-day (5-week) campaigns. Whether Harper made it official or not last weekend, the first leaders debate is scheduled for this evening (Aug. 6). The debate, organized by Macleanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s magazine will feature Harper, NDPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tom Mulcair, Liberal Justin Trudeau and Green Partyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Elizabeth May.

It will air at 8 p.m. on Rogers television stations (City, Omni, CPAC) and be livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube as well as Macleans.ca. Opinion polls taken last week have indicated that across the country the Conservatives and NDP are running at about 33 per cent voter support, with the Liberals at 25 per cent. In Ontario, most polls show the Conservatives in the lead by about five percentage points over the NDP (37-32), with the Liberals in the high 20s.

Taking voters for grant-ed Y

ou think they could have at least waited for the summer holidays to come to an end. But all the signs lead one to believe it’s likely we’ll be officially into a federal election campaign by the time you read this. Of course, we’ve been in an unofficial campaign for some time now what with attack ads flying about, politicians criss-crossing the country and child benefit payouts landing in families’ mailboxes. But the activity has accelerated in the past week with government announcements coming thick and fast. Our own MP made a stop in Arnprior last Wednesday to check out a seniors housing project built with the help of federal money, then braved the highway construction to make five appearances in three hours in Arnprior, McNab-Braeside, Renfrew and Horton last Thursday afternoon to dole out Canada 150 grants. Usually, such announcements are spread out to maximize the impact, but with the writ about to be dropped, the money needs to be presented before Parliament is dissolved and sitting members go from being MPs to mere candidates (if they are running again). Handing out money just prior to an election and supplementing it with promises during the campaign is a time-honoured political tradition. All parties, once they take power, can’t seem to resist bribing the electorate with their own money. They do it, of course, because it usually works. And it can work time and time again. Take the Central Station Lofts seniors housing project on Hugh Street in Arnprior.

The 19 subsidized units were built a couple of years ago by two local developers with help from federal, provincial and county funding. When the funding was first announced in the fall of 2011, there were announcements from each level of government emphasizing their contributions to the project. When ground was first broken and there was an official sod-turning in August 2012, the funding announcements were reiterated. And we were reminded about the grants again when the Lofts were completed and the building was officially opened in April 2013. And again more than two years later on July 29 when our MP issued a news release to say she stopped by to see the “results” of $2.2 million in grants for the seniors housing project. That’s a lot of mileage the federal and provincial governments have got out of one project. Don’t get us wrong. We like seeing our riding get its fair share of grant money. We welcome support for affordable seniors housing and making Arnprior Town Hall more accessible. But remember, it’s our tax money coming back to us, not a generous gift out of the blue from a sugar daddy. After two of the shortest federal election campaigns on record, you will have plenty of time this year to evaluate the parties, candidates and the leaders as we endure one of the longest campaigns ever. Become informed and make a decision based on policies, character and vision. Don’t vote for the highest bidder. It just encourages them.

Child care benefit not so wonderful

To the Editor: Our MP, Gallant, recently held a photo-op with Minister Poilievre where the two touted the wonders of the Universal Child Care Benefit, which they sell as a “handsome lump sum” that will give families a much needed boost. This is the government’s alternative to the national childcare/day care policy, which has been advocated for since the Second World War, and was pointedly one of the findings of the Royal Commission on the Status of Women. Now all families are supposed to get this

Alzheimer’s comments clarified To the Editor: In response to the comments from Valerie J. Baker (Chronicle-Guide, July 9). First, I did not type the ‘advertisement’, so possibly my ‘J’ was taken as an ‘S’. The reason I paid, which turned my letter into an advertisement, is that I felt because my letter was in support of the Conservative

Party (which, for the record, I support but am not a member of). I felt I had to pay to avoid any editing or shortening of my points. I too was exercising my freedom-ofspeech rights. I believe whether you pay or write a letter for free they can be equally political, especially in an election year.

I suppose saying “tried to convince you to vote Conservative” was a little out of line and for that I apologize. Also having lost my father to Alzheimer’s I certainly empathize with all afflicted by this terrible disease. Brenda MacLean Arnprior

Perhaps it’s because of our neutered Census - though the remnants of that should still tell you which families have children. Plus if the government already knows how many families haven’t applied, then they know which families are eligible. Or did our MP forget her PMO-approved notes at home and decide to pull a random number out of thin air? Mrs. Gallant has a working husband, four grown daughters and a hefty salary of $167,000 a year, which is nearly three times the average household income for her riding. Perhaps from her vantage point a couple

hundred dollars a year seems quiet beneficent. As anyone who lives in the real world would tell her (if she’d return her constituents’ phone calls), it really doesn’t help much. According to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, the average cost of childcare in Ottawa (for babies, toddlers and the rest) surpass the $1,000-a-month mark. True here in the Valley we may be paying less than that, but Canadian Living found that (regardless of childcare) to raise a child from birth to the age of 18 costs over $240,000 or just over $1,000 dollars a

month. Making the government’s gesture, fall rather short. This doesn’t even cover university - an entirely separate financial ordeal as I myself can attest. Oh, if you have a chance apply for the cheques, go ahead! The retroactive lump sum you’ll get should just pay for half of one month’s daycare. Helen Scheels sees the tallest tree in Ontario every day. And she never has to leave her apartment. The photograph of the majestic white pine taken in the 1980s by Tim Yearington had special meaning for Scheels well before the tree was proclaimed to be tallest in the province. It brings back many memories when she and her late husband, Doug, were part of a grassroots effort to save Gillies Grove from development. Nature Conservancy

to be sold and told him they had to do something. “It (campaign) blossomed from there.” It took about 13 years, but the Save the Grove committee persevered and the community eventually raised the $400,000 needed. Role for photographs

Photographs of the Grove played a role in the campaign. Patrick and Rosemary Keough included photographs in their popular books, which the Grove committee sold as fundraisers. The Scheels gave five copies of the Yearington photograph to some of those most instrumental in preserving the Grove. Having the tree named the tallest in Ontario is just one more example of why it was so important to ensure Arnprior keep Gillies Grove as a forest treasure within the town limits, said Scheels. “I’m glad enough people agreed with us.”

The great journey has begun About this time last year I was at James Bay conducting shorebird surveys. Shorebirds are sandpipers and plovers, birds that mostly nest in the high Arctic and winter in the Southern Hemisphere. Their generic name arises from their habit of gleaning food from mud exposed when tides peel Michael Runtz back the water from the edges of the continents. Feeling nostalgic about not seeing thousands of northern shorebirds, recently I decided to visit a few local places where good numbers of sandpipers and plovers stop during migration. Presqu’ile Provincial Park

I went to Presqu’ile Provincial Park, one of the best places in southern Ontario for seeing shorebirds during migration. Owen Point is the best place in Presqu’ile for viewing shorebirds. There had been a heavy rain during the night migrating through southern Onprior to my visit, a condition that often results in tario in good numbers.

large numbers of shorebirds putting down in good feeding locations. Thus it was with great anticipation that I arrived at Owen Point just after sunrise. To say I was surprised by what I saw would be an understatement. Instead of hundreds of sandpipers probing their bills into algae-drenched mud, I saw an empty gravel beach. The water in Lake Ontario was higher than I have seen at this time of year (later I learned it was eight inches higher than normal) and there was no shorebird habitat to be seen. I scanned for a full hour and only one lonely Spotted Sandpiper, a local breeding species, flew past. Fortunately, I had much better luck at another known shorebird “stopover.” Stopovers are places where sandpipers make regular stops during their migration. This one, however, was not the shore of a point jutting out into one of the Great Lakes. It was a set of sewage ponds just west of Kingston. I was not disappointed when I arrived at the Amherstview Sewage Ponds. The water in one of the ponds was low and everywhere I looked there were sandpipers wading in the shallow water, plucking meals from the muddy bottom. In addition to about a hundred Lesser Yellowlegs, there were Killdeer, Great Yellowlegs, Spotted Sandpipers, and a group of Wilson’s Phalaropes. The latter are sandpipers that own lobed toes for swimming on the water’s surface. Phalaropes characteristically spin around in shallow water, plucking with their thin

bills little creatures from the surface that had been stirred up from the bottom. Now, you mightn’t think sewage ponds to be pleasant places to visit, but in reality they generally don’t smell bad, and their nutrient-rich waters and mud harbour myriad invertebrates that fuel the appetites of sandpipers and ducks. Almonte Sewage Ponds are among the better ponds in eastern Ontario; a tower provides a great view of the southernmost cell. With high water levels in Lake Ontario eliminating some of the best stopovers for shorebirds, sewage ponds may just be the places to spend the rest of your summer vacation! Prior supports Terry Fox Run with launch day The Prior Sports Bar is jumping on the Terry Fox Run bandwagon in a big way this year. The restaurant/sports bar is hosting a kick-off for the 35th annual run for cancer research on Sunday, Aug. 23. On that day, the restaurant, which is open from noon to 10 p.m. will donate 10 per cent of all food sales to the Arnprior run. Sports bar owner Erica Nicholson said Arnprior Terry Fox Run organizer Stephen Dodd approached her with a plan for a kickoff. “I thought it was a great idea.” “Isn’t that awesome,” said a delighted Dodd. “It’s a great way to raise awareness early. I’m hoping it will motivate others to get involved.” He said several of the runners who will be participating in this year’s run will gather at the Prior at 6 p.m. to support the kick-off. Arnprior Paralympian John Leslie will provide a message of support by satellite and Tom Alain of the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario will be on hand to discuss his cancer research. Dodd is urging people to form teams and participate in this year’s run. “I’d love to see a record number of teams this year,” he said. A new ball field will be added at McNab Centre Park, thanks to birthday money. Canada’s birthday, that is. A Canada 150 funding grant for the park’s expansion was made official on July 30. “The Canada 150 funding is for small community infrastructure work,” explained Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant as she visited the park to announce the federal government was contributing $39,960 to the project. It was the largest of five Canada 150 grants announced that day for Arnprior, McNab-Braeside, Renfrew

and Horton. All projects that received funding are intended to be completed by Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017. Township director of public works, Ryan Frew, explained that the funds are a part of a $120,000 project. “We have an open field here and we are going to build a new ball field,” he said. It will replace a ball field down the road near the former Cherry’s store. That field is being forced to close due to the four-laning of Highway 17. “We are quite pleased to obtain the funds for this work,” said McNabBraeside Mayor Tom Peckett. “Without the grant from the federal government, there would be no ball diamond.”

Gold in the Net is a program that is aim specifically for goalies in hockey. It has alumni like NHL goaltenders Henrik Lundqvist and Antero Niittymaki. The program has extended across the country and even overseas. Gold in the Net has a homebase arena in Brockville, but during the months of July and August instructors take the camp and programs on the road, said co-owner Chantal Baribeau. For July 20-24

it was Arnprior’s turn at the Nick Smith Centre. “It’s a busy week,” said Baribeau. “We have kids from 6 years old to 15 here and we have had students as young as 64.” “This is our third year in Arnprior and it’s for them to be as best as they could be for next season. It’s not far away.” There were students from Petawawa, Pembroke, Shawville, Gatineau, Stittsville and Arnprior at the local camp. The finale in a series of paddles to promote the importance of local rivers will be held on the Madawaska this Saturday, Aug. 8. Organizers say that with the heat wave broken it will be a great day for the annual 14-km paddle down the Madawaska River from the Cherry Point rest stop just north of Calabogie to Burnstown Beach. All participants are welcome to congregate at Burnstown Beach at noon. They will be shuttled free to Cherry Point for the paddle. All kayakers and canoeists are welcome and there will be some spots open in some of the boats (additional $10 charge, all equipment provided, pre-registration needed). The general registration fee is $10. It includes a souvenir gift for each participant. There will be a post-paddle barbecue at the Neat Cafe for an additional $12 (pre-registration preferred). The Ottawa Valley Athlete and Training Program (OVact) is well under way for its third summer. The weekend of July 17 saw four OVact athletes attending the Athletics Ontario Championships, with Matthew Hebert earning two top-10 provincial finishes in the 300-m and 800-m events. Hebert adds these excellent results to a bronze medal earned in the 800-m at OFSSA this year, the provincial track meet of Ontario secondary schools. All those interested in track and field training or just looking to stay conditioned for their specific sport are welcome to join at any time. Brodie would have loved it. More than 170 golfers converged at Madawaska Golf Course July 25 for the Brodie Armstrong Memorial (BAM) golf tournament. It was the third annual event held in memory of the 21-year-old avid musician and golfer who was killed in Arnprior in 2013. Funds raised go to scholarships for Arnprior District High School (ADHS) students. “It is such an amazing day that we all look forward to as soon as the last one ends. Everyone gets pumped for days before and on tourney day they feel good and happy and good vibes are flowing,” said Brodie’s sister Candice. “We all miss him dearly but know his spirit is strong and will continue to watch over the event as well as in life. Brodie was and will be remembered as a one-of-a-kind smiling, shining star with a huge heart, loving spirit, bright mind and kind soul. Though we’d rather he be here, he’s the best guardian angel we could have.” And while a storm late in the day cut short a few golfers time on the course, dinner and entertainment provided by Brodie’s cousin Vincent Hughes along with Kurt Borutski, Evan Wilson and Greg Reuter, kept the party going into the night. “Special thanks to everyone involved but especially to Madawaska Golf Club as well as Carson Wagonlit, Daze Insulation and Urban Ford for sponsoring our four hole-in-one prizes. That’s a pretty big deal to us,” said Can-

Next year the tourney is July 23, which would have been Brodie’s 25th birthday. “It will be a special Happy Birthday BAM event,” said Candice. “We are thinking big for this already. We would definitely like to get the maximum 54 teams, it would be such an accomplishment.” She thanked all those who make the event possible. “Arnprior is such a great community and most people in town have some tie to ADHS. As the executive learns new things every year, each BAM should only get better, and bigger. We’d love to see it go as long as possible and that more people in town get to be a part of such an unforgettable experience,” said Candice. “The love that can come from one person spread among hundreds is too incredible to describe.” Special BAM wear has been created and is for sale. Blaine to share ‘Everything I Love’ with Arnprior audience

You’ll find that in songs like Always You.” And you’ll find the Sunday morning element in Tears on a Bible, an episodic ballad of faith during strife that closes the disc on a moving, tender note. Blaine is well-known for family-based songs, such as They Don’t Make Em’ Like That Anymore, a tribute to his grandfather. That song won Single of the Year at the Canadian Country Music Awards. “I felt last year like some people might have come out solely to see me perform that song and seen a different show than they expected,” says Blaine. “Don’t get me wrong; that song is completely special to me. It’s a career song. But it’s just three minutes and 40 seconds long. And it’s just one part of me. “I also like to play my electric guitar loud. I feel like I come alive on stage when our band is really connecting and I’ve got my guitar in my hand and take

a solo. That sets my soul on fire. And this album (Everything I Love) most closely reflects my live show, more than any other album.” But more than that, it reflects his growth, maturity and confidence as a singer, songwriter, performer and person after 17 years in music — more than half his life. “That’s been dawning on me lately,” says Blaine, who picked up a guitar at age 8, joined his father’s hobby band at 16 and has a business degree from Ottawa’s Algonquin College. “I’m getting to where I feel qualified to be doing what I’m doing. A lot of things about it are starting to make sense, and things that were harder before are coming much more naturally and easier ... I think that this album represents me well. “I think I constantly improve with every album, just from playing shows and getting better at singing and delivering vocals and expressing what I

want to express. But often, within six months after you record a record, you think: ‘I would do this or that differently.’ “Not this time; I wouldn’t change a thing. I know it’s

cliche to say, ‘This is my best album.’ But from top to bottom, from track 1 to track 11, this is a really solid album.” Blaine will hit the main stage at the Arnprior Fair at 9 p.m. Aug. 13.

Fun, family, friends and faith. They’re the cornerstones of life for Jason Blaine. So no wonder they inspired the title - and the music - of his fifth album Everything I Love, out July 9 on eOne Music Canada. Blaine, a Valley boy who grew up in Pembroke and became a country music star, is the headliner at the Arnprior Fair on Thursday, Aug. 13. “I just wanted to share all the sides of my personality,” explains the 33-year-old singer songwriter, husband and father. “I like to cut up with friends and play a little too loud. “My family’s really important to me. And in recent years, I’ve had a kind of spiritual awakening. Entering my 30s, I finally found balance in my life and got my priorities right. I learned you can have a little bit of fun on Saturday night and be at church on Sunday morning.

That’s really where I’m at. “In fact, I toyed with the idea of calling the record Saturday Night and Sunday Morning. But really, there’s much more Saturday night than there is Sunday morning on the album.” Fun comes first and foremost on the upbeat and celebratory Everything I Love, as anyone who’s heard the leadoff single Rock It Country Girl knows. It sets the tone and tempo for the 12-song disc. But in keeping with Blaine’s balanced approach, it also knows when to set both feet firmly on the ground, with songs that celebrate simple joys, universal truths and dow- to-earth values. “At the end of the day, when the stage lights come down and I get off the plane or the tour bus and I come home, I’m just a husband and a father,” says Blaine, who now lives in Nashville with his wife and three children. “And I can never make a record without a song for the people I love most in my life: My

Quite a bit of ceremony involved in day of thrashing eryone at Northcote called it ‘thrashing’. Threshing was a foreign word to the farmers who gathered at the homesteads this time of year to separate the grain from the chaff. To us five kids, the day was almost as good as going off to the Renfrew Fair. We didn’t go to school that day. Every hand was needed on the farm. Over the last year, Arnprior Regional Health has been focusing its efforts to improve the care that patients receive by implementing a new Unit Dose Medication Delivery System. In order to implement the new medication delivery system called unit dose, a relocation and renovation for pharmacy space was required in order to accommodate new equipment required to package patient medications called a PacMed machine. The transition to its new location took place over the winter months with the pharmacy having moved to its new location in May. Since moving into the new space, pharmacy staff have been working to set up the packaging machine, as well as the four dispensing cabinets located on the inpatient unit. The dispending cabinets provide the nurse with immediate access to individually wrapped medications that have been prescribed by the physicians for their patients. In addition to reducing the turnaround time to access medications, the dispensing cabinets have three levels of security that supports increased accuracy and medication safety. The nurse must select the medication from the patient profile on the computer, and only

Florence Catherine Boyle (Owens) passed away peacefully on July 24, 2015 at the West End Villa, Ottawa, Ontario at the age of 91. She was the daughter of the late Florence Mary Owens (Halpin) and Frank C. Owens. Catherine was a resident of Saint John until 2008 when she moved to her daughter’s home in Pakenham, ON. Friendly, outgoing, generous and strong-willed, Catherine was a devout Catholic; a graduate of St. Vincent’s Girls’ High School and Modern Business College. Her ﬁrst jobs were at the City of Saint John in the Taxation Dep’t. and secretary to the Chief of Police. Catherine was very well celebrated by the auditors at Revenue Canada when she retired after 13 years of service, and was fondly nicknamed ‘Boomer’. An avid bridge player, long serving church choir member and soloist, ardent supporter for the Liberal Party, and volunteer for many charities, especially those supporting children, Catherine always found time to help her coworkers, friends and neighbours. She kept very busy with cooking, baking, knitting, sewing, embroidery, needlepoint and social events. Her focus, however, was always on her 7 children and 11 grandchildren (Allan, Stephanie, Danielle, Jennifer, Shawn, Matthew, Michael, Christopher, Sara, Aaron and Max) whom she carefully nurtured and loved unconditionally. Catherine put her talents to work in all aspects of her life by: volunteering to coordinate the United Way campaign at the Income Tax; by being a member of the executive of Westvale Park housing association and by whipping up a birthday cake if she heard it was someone’s birthday. Swimming was a favourite pastime – in the ocean, in SJ Aquatic Centre, in the Kennebecasis and pools. She won medals at the Senior Olympics. Singing was important to Catherine her whole life, especially in church and at parties. She sang and danced in the Knights of Columbus operettas during the war. Catherine loved to travel using the airline passes from her son, David. She ﬂew across Canada regularly to visit her family and she also traveled to Mexico and Japan. She enjoyed Caribbean cruises with her sister, Frances and winter days with her sister, Betty in Arizona and Florida. Catherine loved to socialize with her cherished friends at Chapel Grove in the summer and go on shopping trips to New York. She is survived by her children Shawn Hayes, Pakenham, ON; David (Alison) Sonora, Mexico; Tom, Victoria, BC; Cathy MacLaren (Sean) Calgary, AB; Paul (Lynne), Quispamsis, NB; and Greg, Victoria, BC; sister, Elizabeth Owens, Fredericton, NB and brother, James F. Owens, Saint John, NB,11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Catherine was predeceased by her son, Patrick; sisters Frances Flood, Kennebecasis Park and Patricia Coughlan, Edmonton; brothers William, Edward and George; sisters-in-law Margaret Owens, Jacqueline Owens, Joan Owens and Jean Owens; brothers-in-law George F. Flood and Hon John C. Coughlan. All are welcome to the Memorial Mass to be held at St. Peter’s Church, Clarendon St., Saint John, New Brunswick on Saturday, September 5th, 2015 at 11:00AM followed by a reception.
