Pharmacy relocation paves the way for Pacmed sherry.haaima@metroland.com

News – Arnprior Regional Health officials are asking for the public’s patience as an important new project gets underway at the Arnprior hospital. The work will allow for relocation of the pharmacy to a larger space and implementation of the unit dose system. “To implement the unit dose, we needed to relocate the pharmacy – the existing space was just too small, explained Leah Levesque, chief nursing executive and vice-president patient/resident services. “Over the last few weeks they have been demolishing walls and taking up the concrete baseboards to allow us to start the renovations this fall. Tentative plans see the physical

move to the new space taking place in January. “The current pharmacy space is being repurposed to be physician office space for further physician recruitment, said Levesque. The Pacmed System, which involves pre-packaging of patient medications into individual combinations, improves accuracy and patient safety, reduces medication preparation time, reduces administration time, improves charting, eliminates re-ordering of most regularly administrated medications, reduces time spent receiving medications and reduces drug waste and drug destruction time. “It’s important for the public to know we’re progressive in trying to ensure we can provide the best and safest care possible, said Levesque. Rail corridor dance party cancelled News – The inaugural CN Trail Park pot-luck barbecue and dance party being organized by council candidate Doug Smith has been derailed. Smith announced last Friday that the party scheduled for this Saturday, Aug. 9 is a no-go. He explained that the musical event depends on having power available on

the site on the rail corridor between John and Daniel streets. However, the town has decided it won’t provide the power and portable toilets needed by the festival, he said. Smith said the decision was made after the town received advice from its solicitor regarding the perception it is supporting an event being organized

by someone running for a council position. “This was nothing to do with my campaign ... but there could be a perception the town is supporting me personally and it wants to avoid any misinterpretation about this event,” he said. He said he is hopeful the event can be held next year.

Wheelchair-bound George Perry complained at a recent council meeting about the dangers he experiences on Arnprior roads. The current bylaw prevents wheelchairs from riding on sidewalks, but likely hasn’t been enforced recently. DEREK DUNN/METROLAND

Wheelchair rider upset with town sidewalk bylaw News – George Perry feels damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. The wheelchair-bound Perry spoke before Arnprior council on July 28, sharing a number of negative experiences he’s had on downtown roads and Madawaska Bridge. He understands there is a town bylaw preventing motorized vehicles such as wheelchairs and scooters, along with bicycles and skateboards, from riding along sidewalks. But sometimes it is simply too dangerous to be on the road, in his opinion. That’s when conflicts arise. “People are rude and don’t care,” Perry said. “If I ride on the street, drivers get ticked off. If I ride on the sidewalk, I’m not safe.” He described a stand-off with two men on the bridge sidewalk, and a Tbone accident that nearly tipped over his wheelchair. He wants to legally drive on sidewalks. “I just want the sidewalks safe for myself and other people, especially the handicapped.” He said OPP haven’t been helpful. OPP spokeswoman Janice Sawbridge said from the police’s perspective, they would rather see wheelchairs on sidewalks; that the town’s bylaw prohibiting it is the opposite of Renfrew’s and other municipalities. Arnprior council passed the issue along to the operations committee,

GEORGE PERRY which met on Tuesday, after this edition’s deadline. Coun. Ted Strike, the committee chair, can’t recall a time when someone in a wheelchair was ticketed by a bylaw officer for riding on the sidewalk. He said he would like to see the bylaw exempt wheelchairs. OPP REMINDER

Meanwhile, in its news release July 31, the OPP included a reminder for pedestrians that motorized wheelchairs and other motor assisted mobility devices are permitted to be on sidewalks. “The issue came up at a recent meeting in Arnprior and (OPP) Inspector Colin Slight confirmed these devices are treated the same as pedestrians,” said the release. “Motorized wheelchairs do not have signal lights and should be used on sidewalks, unless the sidewalk in the area is unsuitable for use by the device.”

ARH pharmacist Anne Reich works with four registered pharmacy technicians in the department. The pharmacy has been in its current location for about 14 years. Reich and staff are pleased to see the work get underway. “We’re looking forward to the changes, which will

mean improvements in patient safety and well-being,” she said. ARH UPDATES

Things continue to improve and progress at ARH, reports Levesque. The electronic health records system was implement-

ed in June. The system is important for continuity of care for patients, said Levesque. Electronic records readily available to staff and physicians can prevent duplication of tests and more accurately track a patient’s condition, she said. Dr. Mohammed Nejad is settled into his practice and

Electronic health records and Workstations on Wheels (WOWs) have improved efficiency at the Arnprior hospital. Nurses now have mobile workstations that can be wheeled around or have access to height-adjustable wall units. Showing off the new system are nurses, from left, Jordyn Foy, Megan Lavallee and Amanda Lushman. Dr. Jonathan Fitzsimon has arrived and will be open for business in early August. The hospital has also added two new visiting specialists to

its roster. A pediatrician and a rheumatologist are now part of the team of specialists providing clinics and see patients at ARH. R0022806669

ARH has a new $175,000 main cabinet, along with smaller units that will be on each of the floors of the hospital. The pharmacy is now located in the hospital’s Primary Health Care Centre and will move a space that was once the case room, storage area and the auxiliary’s sewing room. Funding for the unit dose system comes from a variety of sources, including the ARH Auxiliary, the hospital’s capital funds, and the small hospital transfer fund, a Champlain Local Health Integration Network-supported coffer accessible to small hospitals. Partners in Caring will be supporting the pharmacy renovation as well. “The hospital works with a variety of partners who are all committed to ensuring patient safety,” said Levesque. “It’s really regional programs and monies that help support and keep small hospitals viable.”

News – Not only will the side of Arnprior east of the Madawaska get a new park playground, residents on that side of the river will also have their first outdoor rink this winter. During its July 28 meeting, town council approved a proposed a playground at Short Road Park. It has been 20 years in the making - with the third developer in the now Campanale Homes area seeing the subdivision’s comple-

tion - before residents were offered options. A May 28 meeting at the site provided five options to the 67 neighbours in attendance. The favourite includes 35 components such as three slides, easy accessibility for wheelchairs and a separate overhead climber. Parking, including for the handicapped, will also appear. Park and recreation director Glenn Arthur and council agreed with the residents, 15 of whom informed the town of their choice. The cost is $40,600 plus HST and will include a basketball court that will convert to

an ice pad. The money comes from development charges generated during home sales; the land was provided by Campanale in lieu of cash payments to the town. All developments must set aside 5 per cent of land for parks. In future years expect to see certain lighting and trees and shrubs at the back near the trestle. The park is about the same size as Veterans’ Park and the Caruso Street Park in town.

Businesses get tax money for building upgrading Derek Dunn derek.dunn@metroland.com

News – Three privatelyowned buildings downtown will be upgraded thanks in part to grants from Arnprior ratepayers. Town staff has struggled to get word out on the Community Improvement Program (CIP), which issues grants for façade and property improvements, heritage preservation,

and downtown housing. But it is coming along now, with at least one more applicant to be presented to council in September. Last April the program had its first successful applicant. The former Audiotronics building at 123 John St. received $4,250 to restore an exterior door and renovate two upstairs apartments. The owner only got about 40 per cent of what was asked

for because most of the work is interior (hence of limited benefit to the town’s beautification efforts). The improvements will also generate revenue from renters. The entire project is estimated to cost $18,000. However, the July 28 regular town council meeting saw two more John Street businesses given 50 per cent of what was requested. Sweet and Sassy at 114 John St. is replacing

The Gallery Gift Shop at 158 John St. is doing similar work that will cost the owners almost $8,800. It, too, will get $3,500 from the town. Coun. next budget staff will recommend certain pot of money for CIP, thus helping council decide how much to give each successful applicant. Staff will suggest its minimum balance be $30,000 annually, with any unused portion going back into the reserve fund. Municipalities and local businesses have partnered for community improvement in numerous jurisdictions throughout the province for many years now.

Town changes garbage, recycling collection time News – Responding to concerns by downtown businesses, the Town of Arnprior has compromised on garbage collection times. The town issued a news release last week, announcing that the schedule for the collection of garbage and recycling in downtown core is changing “to better suit the needs of all downtown stakeholders.” The window to set out “solid waste” in the downtown core has been extended by an additional two hours, announced the town. Garbage and recycling collection in the downtown core will now start at 9:30 a.m. giving businesses time in the morning to set out their materials for disposal. The businesses had complained that the former deadlines forced them to put out their waste at night or in the early morning, times many of them were not open, causing substantial inconvenience. The concerns sparked a petition and letters to the editor, urging the town to make changes. In response, the town conducted on online survey, from which the 9:30 a.m. compromise arose.

perception of bias. Reeve Walter Stack doesn’t think that would work; that each case will have too many unique aspects. This is the first year for the program. Money is taken from general coffers - what staff calls reserve funds - specifically the $35,000 marketing and economic development fund. That fund will see a minimum balance of $100,000 likely within a year. It is expected that for the

In its announcement, the town asks business owners and operators, as well as residents, located within a designated area of the downtown core to place their garbage and recycling at the curbside no later than 9:30 am on the day of collection to ensure pick-up. The earliest collection set-out time remains unchanged at 7 p.m. the night before collection. The issue arose when the town became concerned that garbage put out too early was unsightly and unsanitary and put the downtown in a bad light. The area involved includes the downtown sections of Daniel, John, Elgin, Madawaska, McGonigal and Hugh streets and Rock Lane. The town stresses that the changes to the solid waste collection bylaw only applies to downtown properties with frontage on the streets involved. All remaining properties in town outside of the designated downtown area should continue to place “acceptable solid waste” at the curbside no later than 7:30 a.m. on collection days and no earlier than 7 p.m. the day before collection, says the town.

Residents gather to hear latest on quarry Derek Dunn derek.dunn@metroland.com

News – About 100 people from Braeside and area came out for an update on the quarry controversy. Hosted by Friends Addressing Concerns Together in McNab-Braeside (FACT-MB), the July 30 meeting at the Arnprior Golf clubhouse lounge was billed as an opportunity to share facts about the residents’ appeal against a township bylaw allowing Miller Construction’s quarry expansion. FACT-MB maintains the extent of the expansion will infringe on property rights and has called for mediation talks prior to the OMB hearing set for March 2015. Fact-mb.org lists the following issues related to the expansion: • Water – quantity and quality will

be affected: its hydro geologist says it is only a matter of time; • Air quality – noxious chemicals from a permanent asphalt plant; • Blasting accidents in the past; • Financial Impact Study - property values will continue to plummet; • Globally rare alvar - the natural heritage will be destroyed. The group is also looking for new members to join and make donations. Spokeswoman Norma Moore said it takes a lot of money to hire experts and pay pro-bono lawyer expenses. “We need funds to pay for studies, expert witnesses, hydro geologist, just to go to mediation,” Moore said. “This is an enormous expense.” She is unwilling to share how much has been raised, and can’t estimate how much will be needed. It

depends on how long the process drags on and the final bill from various participants. The group has held a number of fundraisers – a fashion show and entertainment night – and plan to do more, including a casino night and a coffee house at the Arnprior Golf Course Wednesday, Aug. 13. But there is no question it is difficult to find experts willing to argue the residents’ side. Many represent large companies like Miller at numerous points during their career. The group’s blasting expert must travel all the way from Missouri. “We are a small group of people, but we need funds,” says Moore. There is no date set for mediation talks, but if they fail the Ontario Municipal Board appeal is scheduled for March 2, 2015.

Flat Rapids paving set to begin this week News – Work was scheduled to resume this week on the upgrading of Flat Rapids Road in McNab-Braeside. The

County of Renfrew has announced the resurfacing of about 1.2 kilometres of the road stretching west from Russett Drive was to

have begun Tuesday, Aug. 5. During construction, the road, also known as County Road 63, will remain open to traffic, but may be

reduced to a single lane at times with “minor delays.” The County has been improving the road over the past three years.

Don’t be deterred from flying

D

espite the latest air disasters, air travel is still one of the safest forms of transportation around. You are in more danger driving to the airport to get to your plane than you ever are at any time from airport gate to airport gate. This statement may seem to fly in the face of what was a dismal few weeks for aviation recently, but it is still true. The news of three major airline crashes was shocking, but as with everything, we need to take a deep breath, stand back and take a look at the reality. First the good news. According to the Aviation Safety Network, there have only been 12 airline crashes so far this year. There were 29 last year. But now the bad news. Those 12 planes were carrying more people, meaning that, yes, there were more fatalities so far this year compared to last year, 761 in 2014 compared to 265. Within the space of a week, we saw Malaysia Airlines MH17 brought down by a missile over the Ukraine, killing 298, on July 17. Then, in the same 48-hour period, we saw TransAsia Airways GE222 crash on a small island off of Taiwan, killing 48 with 10 survivors on July 23, followed by the crash of Air Algerie AH5017 in the Mali desert, killing all 118 on board, on July 24. But we need to keep things in perspective. From 1970 to 1979, there was not a single year where the number of airline deaths dipped below 1,000. In the past decade, the number of airline deaths peaked above 1,000 once, in 2005. Even the Swiss Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Archives, which, according to the Toronto Star,

tracks commercial airline disasters, shows that the number of accidents worldwide has been falling nearly ever year since 1943. And that statement we made earlier about driving? It’s backed up by American Scientist magazine, which shows that driving just over three miles, or 4.8 km, in a car on the safest highways can still put motorists at a greater risk than airline passengers. Now, some things we simply cannot account for. Even if you believe that the Russians fired a missile at Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, all evidence seems to suggest that it was a mistake. Pro-Russian commanders believed that they were shooting at a Ukrainian troop plane. We can take small solace in the fact that a civilian airplane was not intentionally targeted. However, we cannot say the same for Hamas, whose rockets are intentionally being lobbed into Israel. This matters to the flying public because Tel Aviv’s Ben-Gurion Airport has been targeted. An Air Canada jet had to be diverted on its approach there earlier this month. This leads to a serious question: why are international air authorities continuing to allow planes into and out of the Tel Aviv airport during a time of obvious hostilities? Neither the Israelis nor Palestinians can vouch for the safety of airline passengers. They cannot even guarantee the safety of their own citizens at this point. Air crash investigators need to be given more teeth or, failing that, their findings need to have some type of immediate follow-up from governments. Only third-party regulations from the government, having been arrived at by experts in the field, and actively enforced, will continue to drive down the number of crashes.

Smart meters least of our worries To the Editor: I am surprised by your editorial ‘Back off City look after yourself’ (Chronicle-Guide, July 3). I suspect that you do not live in the Village of Pakenham. Before I go on, I have some news for you. We had a miracle in the Village. A few days after I sent my (earlier) letter to you, new traffic signs sprouted like weeds on the main street but no pedestrian crossing signs yet. What are they waiting for a traffic fatality? I am certain you will have one. Even the Five Span Bridge has a new 30 km/hr sign but no weight limit restriction. I was alternately amused and horrified reading Mr. E. Lapas’ letter about smart meters. The letter belongs to the humor, scare monger and conspiracy theory section. If he is concerned about RF microwave radiation, he should cancel his electrical service, stop walking under or near hydro lines, buy an icebox for his food, a wood furnace for his

He should stay away from persons that carry cellular phones, tablets, etc. I understand the microwave radiation can cause impotence. For Mr. Lapas’ information, some of the Southern Electric Utilities in the United States that do not have power from water sources and depend on oil, natural gas, coal, solar, wind, etc. have agreements with their customers to turn the electricity off to their appliances during peak periods. The customers are paid a financial amount for the loss of service. Bring the RFID chip and as long as they grease my palm I will sign on the dotted line. Have a nice day and keep smiling. Paddlers explore Bonnechere, Madawaska next on Aug. 9

SUBMITTED

Guy Jamieson entertains on a paddle excursion down the Bonnechere River. The next partnered paddle is scheduled for this Saturday, Aug. 9, on the Madawaska River from Cherry Point Park near Calabogie to the Burnstown beach.

Community - Paddlers from as far away as Toronto and Montreal comprised the nearly 70 people in canoes, kayaks and on paddle boards, who explored a beautiful section of the Bonnechere River July 12. The latest in the series of paddles on local rivers was led by Kathy Lindsay, chair of the Bonnechere River Watershed Project (BRWP), and Chris Hinsperger, owner of Bonnechere Caves. Participants paddled downriver from Eganville to the Forth Chute at the Bonnechere Caves. Paddlers had the unique experience of hearing live traditional Ottawa Valley fiddle music as they paddled, provided by local fiddlers, Guy Jamieson and his son, Rob. Paddlers had numerous opportunities to see many bird species, including belted kingfishers, mallard ducks, Canada geese, and great blue herons, as well as turtles and other wildlife and vegetation along the river. “My husband and I decided to participate in the paddle with no real expectations,” said paddler Susan Nagy of Toronto. “We enjoyed a couple of hours of companionship, surrounded by the beauty of the river, its foliage and waterfowl. We would happily sign up again. Kudos to the organizers!” After the excursion, paddlers enjoyed a summertime BBQ and musical entertainment

provided by Intensity from Barry’s Bay, at the Bonnechere Caves. MADAWASKA PADDLE AUG. 9

The next partnered paddle is scheduled for this Saturday, Aug. 9, on the Madawaska River from Cherry Point Park near Calabogie to the Burnstown beach. The BRWP is partnering with the Township of McNab-Braeside on the second annual paddle. Everyone is welcome to “celebrate our river.” The day will include fiddling as well as paddling, followed by an optional barbecue at the Neat Coffee Shop and a fiddle concert by Fiddleheads at the Neat Schoolhouse in Burnstown. All participants receive an event souvenir and shuttle service to the put-in point at the Cherry Island picnic area, about 14 kilometres upstream of the Burnstown Beach. To register for the paddle, email recreation@ mcnabbraeside.com, call Geoff Patterson at 1800-957-4621 or contact the BRWP at info@ BonnechereRiver.ca. Cost is $10 per person and if you don’t have a canoe, you can get a seat in a special ‘freighter’canoe for an additional $10. Registration begins on site at the Burnstown Beach at 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 9. See the Bonnechere River Watershed Project website for more information – www.BonnechereRiver.ca/brwp-events.

Local woman victimized by ‘son in jail’ scam News – Local OPP report that an area woman has been tricked into sending a stranger a quantity of cash through a money transfer company after someone pretending to be her son convinced her he was in jail and needed the funds to get bail. “If someone calls you to send money using a money transfer company, take the time to confirm the story before sending any money,” warn police. “If they try to convince you not to speak to anyone it is most likely a fraud.” OPP urges citizens to learn more about types of fraud and how to protect themselves at www.antifraudcentre. ca.

Construction to Improve Patient Safety Underway Over the next two weeks (Tuesday, July 22nd – Friday, August 1st) we will begin demolition work in our new pharmacy space so we can move forward with our Unit Dose Implementation that will improve patient safety as it relates to Medication Administration. We apologize in advance as excessive noise will occur as a result of removing the old travertine floors and concrete walls in order to accommodate the new pharmacy and equipment. We have worked with the contractors and confirmed that there will be breaks from the noise each day between 12:00 (Noon) and 1:00 pm and again between 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. As well, demolition will not commence before 8:00 am and will be completed by 7:00 pm each day. We have closed the rooms directly below the space and the contractor is placing noise dampening materials on the floors to reduce the impact of the noise for our patients. We understand that it is difficult for you to rest and will do our best to ensure that we make it our priority during this demolition. We appreciate your patience as we proceed with our plans to enhance the quality and safety of care we provide to you our patients.

There are aliens living amongst us Lifestyle - Aliens have long captured our interest. The idea of creatures from another world living amongst us has spawned myriad novels, movies, and television series. Usually the unearthly visitor looks nothing like us and does us great harm. In some cases (Aliens starring Sigourney Weaver, a classic example), the aliens live inside humans, exploiting our bodies for nourishment. Fortunately for us, those scenarios only take place in science fiction. However, that isn’t the case in Nature. Currently in local fields, forests, and even backyards, real aliens are exploiting living creatures. They lurk inside their bodies, devouring their flesh, emerging only when ready to transform into a different form. Before you panic and dial 911, please know that these aliens don’t come from another planet. Nor do they pose any risk to us. Indeed, they are as much a part of our native fauna as are Beavers and

Michael Runtz Nature’s Way Monarch butterflies. These aliens are primarily insects, the majority being wasps and flies. While sometimes called “parasites, most are technically not parasites for they ultimately kill their “hosts, something true parasites don’t do. In entomological circles these insects are known as “parasitoids. Recently a reader of this column emailed me about a puzzling situation. Some swallowtail butterfly caterpillars she collected had entered

their pupal stage in which they transform into stunning butterflies. However, instead of winged beauties emerging from their chrysalises, very different creatures appeared. What emerged were parasitoid wasps. They were Ichneumons, which form a huge family with thousands of member species. Along with Braconid Wasps, Tachinid Flies, Flesh Flies, and hordes of other parasitoid groups, they constitute nearly 10 per cent of all known species of insects. Parasitoids lead fascinating and complex lives. First, the female has to locate an appropriate host to receive her eggs. Some hunt visually. Others hunt by smell. A few sense vibrations. Caterpillars are common targets, but just not any caterpillar will do. If too large, the caterpillar might pupate too soon for its alien inhabitants to complete their development. If too small, there may not be enough nutrition in its living tissues to support the

invaders. Some parasitoids select spiders, grasshoppers, beetles, or even cicadas, paralyzing their victims before stashing them in burrows with their eggs. In all cases, young parasitoids eat their host while it is alive. The second challenge is to get eggs onto or into the chosen host. Many just lay them on the target or inject them into it. If you see a large, black wasp with an immensely long, jointed abdomen on your lawn, you’ve met a Pelecenid, which drills into the soil to lay its eggs on June Beetle (a.k.a. white) grubs. And if you see a huge wasp with a terrifyingly long “stinger, you’ve met one Megarhyssa, a giant ichneumon that chemically burn its ovipositor (“stinger) into a tree to lay its eggs on Sawfly larvae, which eat fungus inside the wood. Our world is full of amazing creatures, but few are more fascinating than the parasitoids.

MICHAEL RUNTZ

This barely alive Apple Sphinx caterpillar had dozens of tiny Braconid Wasp grubs living inside and eating it. After eating their way to the outside of the hapless caterpillar, they are pupating in their cocoons. However, we must be thankful they have not yet turned their eyes onto us!

Marcil said the downtown business’s donation, which will go toward paying for music and children’s events at the Aug. 22-24 festival, is appreciated, especially with the dormant Arnprior BIA not being a sponsor this year. “Every little bit helps,” he said, noting the more donations receives the more the festival will offer. Nature reserve walk set for Saturday

At only ten years old, Elissa has already faced a number of challenges in her life. She is being raised by a single mother who has to work two jobs in order to support her three children. Because her mother could not afford to send her children to daycare or summer camps, Elissa became the caregiver of her two younger siblings. When school was out for the summer, she spent her days at home tending to her brother and sister.

D A E R SP E TH

As soon as a neighbour noticed that three children between the ages of five and ten were home alone until late at night, he called the Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa. Elissa’s mother was not abusive, she simply did not have the resources or funds to ensure her children were properly supervised throughout the day. The Children’s Aid Foundation of Ottawa supported the family financially; the younger children were able to attend day camp, while Elissa had the opportunity to join a dance camp. As a result, Elissa has since flourished into a dynamic young lady full of energy and dreams for the future. With the help and support of the Foundation, all three children developed new skills, were able to interact with people their own age and made lasting friendships all while being kept safe and secure.

News - The Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust (MMLT) is hosting its annual Nature Walk at Rose Hill Nature Reserve on the morning of this Saturday, Aug. 9. This event should be of interest to nature lovers of all ages to enjoy the rolling forested hills typical of the Addington Highlands. The historic Pumpkin Trail traverses the property, allowing hikers to stroll by two small lakes. This year the new Hemlock Nature Trail will be featured in the tour. This Nature Reserve has one of the most well-developed stands of old Hemlock in eastern Ontario. The Land Trust is committed to preserving this beautiful piece of wilderness so that it returns to its natural, old growth state, home to the numerous species that thrive in that environment. Rose Hill Nature Reserve was donated to the Land Trust in 2011 by the family of the late Charlie and Vera Armstrong through their daughters Charlene and Bethany, descendants of the Fritsch family of Denbigh. Through the years Charlene and Bethany, with their parents, spent many happy summer outings on the property with their children. The grassy knoll beside one of the lakes was a favourite spot for picnics. Registration for the Nature Walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 9, with the hike starting at 10 a.m. sharp. A professional ecologist will be available to explain the special features of this beautiful wilderness property. Refreshments will be served following the walk.

A left-hand amputee, Fergusson knows what it is like to overcome daily challenges. She encouraged the children in attendance to face challenges with a positive attitude and said that with hard work, the sky is the limit. At left, Fergusson speaks to story time participants. Carbohydrates versus protein – the great debate Ian Harris

Opinion - First a little simple science - the three main macronutrients that we need to maintain a sense of good health and to maintain a healthy weight are complex carbohydrates (carbs) from fruits and vegetables, lean protein from plant sources and healthy fat. All three macronutrients must be present in every meal. Removing any one of the three macronutrients from ones diet sets the human body on a downward and slippery slop. A fad diet is a diet that increases or decreases the consumption of one of the macronutrients or

Weight management, wellness and nutrition removes one altogether. For example, the Atkins diet, popularized by Dr. Robert Coleman Atkins, limits carbs while focusing heavily on protein. In theory the diet involves limiting the consumption of carbs to switch the body’s metabolism from metabolizing glucose as energy over to converting stored body fat to energy. This process, called ketosis, begins when insulin levels are low. Ingesting huge amounts of protein can be very difficult on

the liver and kidneys. As well, a diet that is high in protein is usually high in saturated fat which is unhealthy. It should never be about the carbs. Carbs do not make you gain weight; eating too many of the wrong carbs make you gain weight. You don’t get fat or die of cardiovascular disease (CVD) from eating fruits and vegetables, but you will from eating cookies and cakes. Athletes are under the biggest misconception. Although protein is very important to our bodies and that it repairs and rebuilds, protein alone does not make muscles bigger. Pumping iron does. Contraction and

expansion of the muscle makes them bigger. Energy comes from complex carbs and if the body does not have enough of them you won’t have enough fuel and, therefore, the energy to pump iron in order to make your muscles grow. As well, if you do not have enough complex carbs to give you energy, simple day-to-day tasks like working, taking a long walk or going for a bike ride will become difficult. Healthy fats also play an important role in this equation. Our brains are made up of fat. Certain micronutrients like Vitamins A, D, E and K require fat to be absorbed, our organs

need fat to cushion them and fat regulates body temperature. To stay healthy and live a clean lifestyle, don’t smoke, don’t drink or over indulge, get plenty of exercise and eat a varied diet consisting of complex carbs, lean protein (preferably plantbased) and healthy fats.

High meat prices bad for consumers, good for farmers News – The price of red meat at the grocery store has risen on the back of surging cattle and hog prices, and while prices will not drop in time for this barbecue season, consumers should begin to see some relief later this year, according to a new report from BMO Economics. “Farm prices for hogs averaged U.S. $85/ cwt between April and June, up nearly 24

per cent from the same period last year, said BMO Capital Markets economist Aaron Goertzen. After adjusting for inflation, hog prices are now at their highest since the mid1990s, while real cattle prices are higher than they’ve been since the early 1980s. “The recent increase in red meat prices, while less encouraging news for consumers

at the checkout, has brought many farmers in the industry a welcome boost to their business, said Sam Miller, managing director and head of agriculture for BMO Harris Bank. “Rising red meat prices will likely cost the average Canadian household more than $100 per year, Goertzen. Pakenham Fair to have ‘dog days of summer’ theme Tiffany Lepack tlepack@perfprint.ca

Events – The area has not one, but three summer fairs filled with family fun. Now that the Almonte Fair has had another successful year and the Arnprior Fair has begun (it runs today through Sunday), it is time to mark your calendar for the Pakenham Fair. The annual country fair is set for Saturday, Aug. 16 from

9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Pakenham Community Park and Stewart Community Centre. This year’s fair will be going to the dogs, so to speak. The fair theme is ‘Dog Days of Summer’ because last year they introduced a dog show by Dan Lafontaine, who is dog behaviourism expert, which proved to be quite successful. “It’s a fun thing for the kids to bring their furry friends out to, said MacLaren.

Some of the categories include dog with most waggly tail, dog with longest hair, dog with curliest hair, dog with most spots, and more. Tiffany MacLaren, community economic and cultural coordinator for the Town of Mississippi Mills, hopes everyone will now start preparing for the fair. “I encourage everyone to pick up a fair book and start working on their projects, said

carnival-like games with prizes for kids as well. Organizers have rented a number of life-size games from GAMESforALL.ca for people to play outside. There will be oversized Chess, Snakes and Ladders, a Jenga-like game and Connect Four. “It’s like a family game night on a giant scale, said MacLaren. New online reporting system for non-emergency crimes Police, owner seek $50,000 in stolen coins News – Crime Stoppers and the Renfrew Detachment of the OPP are asking the public’s help in solving a theft of silver coins valued more than $50,000. Police issued the ‘crime of the week’ appeal last week, explaining that on May 9 between noon and 3:15 p.m, a thief entered a garage on Highway 132 in Admaston-Bromley. They gained access to a safe and stole the large amount of silver coins. There were two metallic box-type suitcases. One contained only Olympic coins with 12 trays of 24 coins. The other metallic case contained coins with various animals and insects. All were Canadian currency. There were also two “monster boxes,” one yellow and one blue that were taken that contained silver coins with various animals printed on them. The other ‘monster box’ contained silver bars. Crime Stoppers Pembroke-Renfrew County believes someone has information that could assist police in solving this crime. If you have information on any criminal offence that results in charges being laid, you qualify for an award of up to $2,000. Call Pembroke-Renfrew County Crime Stoppers at tollfree at 1-800-222-8477. All tips remain anonymous. Telephones are answered 24 hours a day.

OPP investigate dog shooting News – The OPP are asking for the public’s help after a dog was apparently shot at a campground in the area. OPP Constable Chris Colton is investigating after police received information that a dog may have been shot in the area of Norway Lake Campground. The owner of the dog took the injured animal to a vet on July 24 and the vet believed the animal had been shot, says an OPP news release. The OPP are asking anyone who may have information on the case to the call them at 1-888-310-1122.

Couple charged for leaving dog in hot car News – A couple have been charged under the Ontario SPCA Act, after their dog was left alone in a hot car in Algonquin National Park. The SPCA reports in a news release that a park warden observed a Golden Retriever-type dog locked inside a car on a campsite on July 5. The warden noted that the exterior temperature was at least 25 degrees, the car was located in direct sunlight, the four windows were down about two inches, and the animal did not have water and was panting heavily. After 15 minutes passed without the return of the dog’s owners, the Ontario SPCA was called. The owners returned to their campsite about 35 minutes later. Following an investigation, the Ontario SPCA charged the man and woman with causing distress to an animal and failing to provide the care necessary for an animal’s general welfare. The couple is scheduled to appear in court in September. “The Ontario SPCA reminds pet owners that it is unacceptable to leave an animal unattended in a vehicle and there is no good excuse for doing so,” said SPCA senior inspector Steve Toy.

News - Local OPP point out that people now have the option to report some crimes using the Internet. Complainants can use the system to report theft under $5,000, mischief or damage to property or a vehicle under $5,000, theft from a vehicle, and lost or missing property. “The process is easy and can be

done at your convenience at www.opp.ca/ reporting,” say police. People must have a valid e-mail address to submit a crime and the system is not currently compatible with mobile devices such as phones and tablets. And people may still contact the OPP by phone any time to report a crime at 1-888-310-1122.

Police ask people not to use the system if they have a suspect, someone is injured, it is an emergency; the value of the damage or theft is more than $5,000, or if the incident involves a weapon. In these more serious crimes, call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or in an emergency dial 9-1-1.

MP sees opportunity in proposed new firearms legislation News – The federal government’s proposed new firearms legislation offers a chance to streamline the provincial chief firearms officer (CFO) function, says Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP Cheryl Gallant. “Recent comments attrib-

uted to these two provincial public servants demonstrate the need for uniform enforcement of federal firearms law, rather than multiple interpretations of the Firearms Act,” said Gallant in a news release last week. “Law-abiding Canadians

who own firearms are not served by CFOs trying to interpret proposed federal legislation, especially to big city media that is hostile to rural Canadians who happen to enjoy heritage sporting activities like hunting. Their job has always been enforce-

ment.” Gallant suggested it’s time to consolidate the positions of the federally-funded provincial CFOs and replace them with a single, national civilian-led chief firearms office, whose purpose is strictly administrative and friendly oriented service. Such a move that would save taxpayers’ dollars and support front-line policing, she saidl. Gallant has two motions before the House of Commons pertaining to firearms. The first motion, M-439, calls on the federal government to stop funding the provincial CFOs, and instead re-direct their overlapped funding to front line policing and crime prevention. The measure would also

ensure the interpretation of federal law does not vary from province to province, as it does now, she said. The second motion, M452, would replace the RCMP as the body responsible for reclassifying firearms, and put the power in the hands of a civilian-led firearms technical experts committee. The motion would place Canadians who are experts in firearms in charge of assessing the capabilities of new and existing firearms on the Canadian market, and using their expertise to properly classify the firearms, explained Gallant. She said she would welcome the incorporation of M-439 and M-452 into the upcoming legislation.

Small business funding available News – Funding from the Eastern Ontario Development Program (EODP) helped businesses such as Arnprior Hypernetics last year. So Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant is urging more applications from companies in the riding this year. Arnprior Hypernetics received $15,000 to train and employ new workers. The EODP promotes economic development in eastern Ontario with the aim of diversifying and making regional economies more competitive. All local businesses are eligible to apply for funding. Decisions for EODP funding are made by the Renfrew County Community Futures Development Corporation (RCCFDC), to ensure that local interests are respected and promoted, noted Gallant. Priorities which Community Futures has selected as the focus for this intake of applications are job creation, skills development, the development of new markets, product development, adoption of information and communication technologies, and innovation. Any commercial enterprise interested in applying for EODP funding must submit a Statement of Interest to the RCCFDC. Community Futures will soon be conducting information sessions to assist local businesses in the application process, including providing guidance in preparing a Statement of Interest. For more information on these upcoming information sessions, the EODP, or other small business support programs, visit cherylgallant.com.

Liberals thwart gas plant investigation: MPP public money wasted - this is a very serious matter,” said Yakabuski. “Regardless of how the Premier tries to spin it, the Justice Committee still has outstanding questions for key witnesses.” Yakabuski noted that it is common knowledge that the former Premier’s chief of staff, David Livingston, is alleged to have broken the government’s own security procedures when he granted access to computers in the Premier’s office to outside computer technician Peter Faist. It has been established that Laura Miller and Faist are key witnesses to exactly what happened, he added. After this information was made public by the OPP, the Justice Committee requested on several occasions for Miller Faist to appear.

The election was called before they were able to testify. Now that the election is over and the Liberals have a majority government, the Premier has taken the position that the committee should not interview these key witnesses and instead begin report writing, said Yakabuski. RIGHT TO KNOW

“The public have a right to know who was responsible for the destruction of documents and the deletion of emails, he added. “Today (July 24) the Premier had a chance to distinguish herself from Dalton McGuinty by doing the right thing. Instead, she chose to put politics ahead of the public interest.”

News – The Liberals are continuing to allow the gas plant scandal to be “swept under the rug,” says Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski in a news release last week. In the Legislature July 24, Yakabuski asked Premier Kathleen Wynne to allow the Standing Committee on Justice Policy to continue its investigation of the $1.1 billion of public funds “wasted” on two cancelled gas plants, and the possibly “criminal deletion” of records by senior Liberal operatives. In response, the Premier avoided answering the question before referring it to her House Leader to refuse the request. “There is an ongoing criminal investigation by the OPP anti-rackets squad into deleted records, and over a billion dollars of

Sullivan and Son of Arnprior, which was also represented at the ceremony by Tim Pruner, was the main contractor in the project to turn the building from industrial to office space.

Business – Thousands of unsuspecting customers were simultaneously greeted with a surprise while banking with TD July 25. At exactly 2 p.m., more than 20,000 TD employees across Canada distributed green envelopes containing a $20 bill to every customer in more than 1,100 TD branches and told those using TD phone and online banking service that they would receive a deposit directly into their accounts. “It was incredible to see the look of surprise on our customers’ faces,” said Ester Condello, a branch manager with TD Canada Trust. “We say thank you to our customers every day, and we’ll say thank you tomorrow and the next day. Today’s thank you is about all of us at TD working together to shout it from the rooftops.”

Sports – The all-Galetta women’s triples team, representing District 16 at the Ontario Provincial Triples Championships in Willowdale, won the silver medal. The team and will be heading off to play for Ontario in the Canadian National Bowls Championships.

Ontario is such a large province that it has the privilege of sending both the gold and silver medalists to the National Lawn Bowling Championships, so the Galetta women silver medalists will be donning their Ontario jackets and heading to Winnipeg Aug. 17-23. The Upper Ottawa Valley club, who are currently in fifth place in the Greater Ottawa Fastball League (GOFL), had an excellent weekend going undefeated with five wins and a tie in six outings. Following the championship game, Greer, who joined Micksburg for the event (he normally plays for Quyon

Flyers of the GOFL), was named the competition’s Most Valuable Player. Costello, who hurled 14 shutout innings in two playoff contests Sunday, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Pitcher. Brad Porter, who usually pitches for Kars Aces of GOFL but joined Elkland for

the three-day competition, was the hard luck loser. Porter took over from Thunderbelly’s starter Garrett Hone and the only run he yielded was Greer’s fifth inning solo blast. Thunderbelly’s, from the small village of Elkland in north-central Pennsylvania, had a strong game in the final

but were forced to settle for runner-up honours for a second straight year. They lost to Sharon (Ontario) Lake Simcoe Lightning in last year’s championship game. This was the third straight year Elkland has competed in the annual fastball event in Carp. Thunderbelly’s finished the tournament with a

4-2 mark. The tournament is named in memory of Gil Read, a highly successful fastball coach from the Carp area, who died tragically in 2007. His son Chris and nephew Al Read head the organizing committee. See FRIDAY, page 29

Friday boasts record crowd Continued from page 28

All funds from the event go to support children who wish to play sports but could not otherwise afford to do so. Chris Read said this year’s event was another big success. “Except for a delay in the middle of the semi-final games, we managed to duck the rain on Sunday,” he explained. “But we had about 20 people on the fields clearing water – some of them came out of the stands to help. In half an hour we were underway again.” He said he expects the venture to equal last year’s tournament high fundraising mark. “We had a record Friday – the biggest crowd ever for a Friday night. I think we will equal last year and with two less teams involved. So that is excellent,” Chris reported. Local favourites Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton Electric finished sixth with a 2-2 record.

Taking the coin toss to determine homefield advantage prior to Friday night’s game are coaches Adam Brown of Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton Electric and Terry Boyd of Ottawa Valley A’s. For additional information on the tournament and the Gil Read Memorial Foundation, visit the tournament website at gilreadmemo rial.com.

ADHS student stars on U18 Ontario rugby team Sports – Arnprior District High School student Amber Clouthier played a major role for the Eastern Ontario U18 girls rugby team that competed in the Eastern Canadian championships. The tournament featured U18 teams from the provinces of Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and PEI. The Eastern Ontario squad came in second and Clouthier started all three games, including being named player of the game for one. Her ADHS rugby coach Glenn Wallace called Clouthier “a great kid who works ex-

tremely hard.” Amber’s mother, Penny Clouthier, said her daughter had a great time at the championship. One of the reasons she got to play so much is because of her versatility, she noted. Amber played wing as well as fullback and fly half during the competition. “She loved it,” her mother said. “It was a great experience.” Amber is going into Grade 12 this September at ADHS and is expected to play a major role on the ADHS girls rugby team that she has been on since Grade 9.

day. The sun was already beating down on the men, and soon my sister Audrey would take out a pail of fresh well water, with shards of chipped ice from the icehouse. The men would all drink from the same tin cup. I wasn’t allowed to go into the barnyard that day. I would just get in the way, Mother had said. I would love to have been closer to the action, but I had to content myself by sitting on a kitchen chair and looking out the window at the hive of activity going on outside. There didn’t seem to be much talking ... there was too much to be done. There were Briscoes and Kallieses, and Thoms, and Beams ... I could recognize their faces under their wide-brimmed straw hats ... all neighbours, who one day would have the favour returned ... their grain would be thrashed by the same farmers who were right there in our barn yard. When the break came for their dinner, they wandered over to the kitchen door. Two long benches had been put outside and basins of water with bars of homemade soap were beside them. Huck towels were folded and would soon be as black as a boot. The men dropped their straw hats on the ground, splashed

in jig time, and then they went back to the job at hand. Father said they would stay until all the grain had been thrashed, so that the thrashing machine would not have to make a second trip to our farm. And late in the afternoon, I heard the last of the big machine wind down. One by one the neighbours left, driving their wagons, or buggies, and the more prosperous of the lot, riding off in the cars. By that time, Mother, Aunty and Audrey would have the kitchen back in order. The planks that served as a second table were outside propped against the wall. The washbasins emptied, and the pile of huck towels piled in a corner of the summer kitchen waiting for the weekly wash. Emerson, Everett and Earl were sent to the backfield to bring in the cows for the nightly milking, and gradually, our farm turned back to normal. Thrashing for that year was over. Once again, it was neighbour helping neighbour. The Depression had nothing to do with it. Even if there was wealth all around us, everyone would still need the hand of a neighbour to survive. their faces, rubbed on the soap, didn’t bother to rinse anything off, and swiped at the dripping water with the towels. They headed into the kitchen and sat at the kitchen table, spilling over onto two planks that had been put on top of two sawhorses and covered with white flour bag sheets. It would serve as a second table. The kitchen was cooler than the summer kitchen, which held the Findlay Oval, but it soon warmed up with all the bodies inside. Some took red dotted handkerchiefs out of their overalls and wiped their sweating faces. It took Mother, Aunty and my sister Audrey all their time to keep the bowls of potatoes, beans, and turnips refilled. The big platters of roast beef vanished as if someone had cleaned them off with a dishcloth! Pies had already been cut, and were stacked on the bake table. There was no such thing as a clean plate for their pie ... it was simply chucked off the pie plate and right onto the plate that had just held their dinner. Almost everyone had a second piece, and even the last slice of bread had vanished. I listened to the talk around the two tables. It was all about the weather holding off, and what a stroke of luck that was. And how it was a blessing that everyone had good crops that year. And they talked about who would be the next to host the thrashing gang. The whole meal was over

In the house, Mother was already rubbing salt and pepper on the biggest roast of pork in the smoke house, and the Findlay Oval was coming to life. Even Aunty was pressed into service, and was busily peeling potatoes on the end of the table. Aunty wasn’t really an aunt at all. Father said he had no idea who she was, Mother didn’t know her from a hill of beans, but she came every year to help ... in the winter it was to mend socks and knit mitts, in the Spring it was sap time, and this time of year, she was there to help get ready to feed anywhere from 15 to 20 men. Every hand was needed, because today was threshing time ... or as we called it back then ... thrashing day. I could see the thrashing machine coming in our long lane, and already farm neighbours from all along the Northcote Road were milling about the barnyard. The barnyard was full of stoked grain, and neighbours’ wagons would be making trips back to the fields to bring in more to be fed into the thrashing machine. It was already roaring like a train engine, and I could see grain-dust flying through the air. Father said at breakfast that the weather had co-operated. There would be no rain that

A tribute to Mary Cook’s good friend Joyce Joyce had her very own bedroom, as did her brother Allan. I remember now, so many decades later, flowered wallpaper somewhere ... perhaps it was in the hall upstairs, or in Joyce’s bedroom, but in my mind’s eye, I see pink ... still one of my favourite colours. Joyce had a little wood pencil box ... I think now, the only one at the Northcote Public School, but perhaps there were others, but I remember hers in particular. My pencils and eraser were in a little homemade drawstring bag. You opened Joyce’s pencil box with your thumbnail, and it swivelled open, and there inside were her pencils and art gum, as neat as you please. And one Friday, Joyce let me take her wood pencil box home for the weekend, which I took to the Lutheran Church on Sunday. That’s the kind of friend Joyce was. Joyce wore store-bought underwear ... mine were flourbags. Joyce wore little white socks with lace around the cuffs. She wore hand-knit sweaters. In spite of all this, what I considered grandeur, Joyce and I were best friends. It mattered not to her that I came from a big rambunctious family, whom were poor as church mice, and most of my clothes were hand-me-downs, or ‘made-overs’. That’s the kind of friend Joyce was. Joyce’s father drove a modern car. Until we got our old Model T in a trade, we had to rely on Queenie, the buggy in the summer, and the cutter in the winter. And often I was taken into Renfrew in that

Lifestyle - We were both about five years old. It was the first time I had seen Joyce Francis, both of us brand new pupils at the Northcote Public School. People often ask if my little friend Joyce really existed ... or did I just create her to flesh out my Depression memories. She did indeed exist! And I remember that first day at school, so very many years ago when a friendship was forged that would last for many decades down the road. What I remember so well, as the little girl sat directly across from me in one of those little desks with the drawer under the seat, and the ink well implanted in the right hand corner, was her beautiful complexion. She had skin as fair as a lily, with a faint blush to her cheeks, and I noticed back then with envy, there wasn’t a freckle anywhere in sight. Not like my face, which my brother Emerson often likened to a turkey egg. And there was Joyce with skin like a freshly ripened peach. Although we became fast friends, our lives were as different as night was from day. First of all, Joyce lived in a brick house ... ours was log. There was a flush toilet, with real toilet paper. Ours was behind a cluster of cedar trees, with an Eaton’s catalogue on a spike. But when Joyce came to our farm to play, she used the outdoor privy just as if there was no difference between it and her modern facility at home. That’s the kind of friend Joyce was.

spanking new car, driven by Joyce’s father, and we would stop at Briscoe’s General Store for an ice cream cone, on Joyce’s suggestion. She knew for me, ice cream cones were a very infrequent treat. That’s the kind of friend Joyce was. Joyce never lost her love of life. She married, had two children Frank and Janice, and was then widowed. Derek Smith, who shared Joyce’s love of art, came into her life and they shared a dozen wonderful happy years together. When her memory started to fade, she depended more and more on her family. Finally, she made her home with her daughter, Janice, who often compared her Mother’s failing memory to that of a very young child. Yes, Joyce, although suffering from dementia, became childlike. She loved to be read to, she smiled readily, she showed gratitude. And then, this gentle soul, this dear friend of mine for many decades, slipped away in her daughter’s arms on Saturday night, July 26 in Toronto. Those of us who had Joyce in our lives for decades will cherish those memories that set her apart from others. She will continue to live on in my stories, and those of us who have had the privilege of calling her a friend will meet in the little Northcote United Church to say our final goodbye on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 10:30 a.m., and then we will gather in the one room school house next door to share memories of my little friend Joyce Francis Fricker.

As a medical oncologist with the regional cancer program and medical lead with the breast disease site at The Ottawa Hospital, Dr. Segal is very familiar with what her patients go through. But what makes her patients relate to her as a doctor – and as a person – is her personal passion for the cancer cause. This year marks the ďŹ fth that Dr. Segal will be volunteering as a Ride Guide for Ride the Rideau, Eastern Ontario’s largest single day fundraiser for cancer research. Part of her area of research includes exercise and survivorship, but that’s not why chooses to go above and beyond her work at the Hospital. “I’m doing this for my patients,â€? said Dr. Segal, who added that learning about her participation in the event helps her patients become more comfortable with her.

of the event is to raise funds for cancer research. I’ll do as much as I can for the cause.

For the doctor, the best part about Ride the Rideau is spotting her patients along the route. “Even though they usually recognize me before I recognize them, I get an incredibly warm feeling when I see patients riding, she said. “And cycling is a great activity that’s open to everyone – you don’t need a special skill set to ride and you can ride a little or a lot. “I feel so proud about being a part of this cause. As the signature fundraising event for The Ottawa Hospital Foundation, Ride the Rideau has raised more than $6.45 million for cancer research at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. To learn more about Ride the Rideau, or to register or sign up to volunteer, visit www.ridetherideau.ca.

“They know about me and my family, and know that I’m a huge cyclist anyway, she said. “And the aim

The Broken Chain We little knew that morning, That God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, In death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, You did not go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, Your love is still our guide; And though we cannot see you, You are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, And nothing seems the same; But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again. Lovingly remembered by the Shalla Family and sons Evan, Connor and Nigel

What she suffered she told but few, She didn’t deserve what she went through. Tired and weary she made no fuss, But tried so hard to stay with us. Our lips cannot speak how we loved her, Our hearts cannot tell what to say, But God only knows how we miss her, In our homes that are lonely today. Loved and missed Mum, Wayne, Maxine, Ken, Sheila and families

GORDON GIBSON Who passed away August 8, 2013 A year has passed Gordie, It’s hard to believe it’s true, That this time last year, We were saying good-bye to you. God walked around the Heavens, And decided then and there, “I need a warm and gentle man, I have no time to spare, He must be very special, With free smiles to give away, And a sense of humour all can share, To brighten everyday. I need someone with a loving touch, Who has made his family proud.” Then God checked the whole earth over, And called your name out loud.

News - Calabogie Peaks is building a reputation for being more than a world-class four-season resort and premier ski facility. It is making its mark in the music world, as well. A successful Countryfest in June will be followed up Aug. 15 to 17 by the fourth annual Class Axe Guitars Calabogie Blues and Ribsfest at Calabogie Peaks. Peaks’ owner Paul Murphy is proud of his resort’s role in the growing festival, which this year features such world-class blues performers as David Wilcox and Jimmie Vaughan. Other bands hitting the stage this year are The 24th Street Wailers, Anthony Gomes, Wicked Grin, Raoul and the Big Time, Charlie A’Court, the Paul Deslaurier Band, Jerome Godboo, Angel Forrest, Dawn Tyler Watson and Ben Racine Band and the Kelly Richey Band. You can read more about the bands at www.calabogieblues.com Murphy says musicians are realiz-

ing the value of these festivals as ways to promote their material, and is hopeful the appearance of Renfrew resident Rich Martell at the recent Countryfest will help to advance his career. It takes a lot of people to make a festival work, like Class Axe Guitars of Kemptville, which Murphy describes as a “tremendous long-term sponsor.” The 2014 blues and ribsfest will have new features, fireworks, and camping in a picturesque, natural amphitheatre setting on the ski hill. The first year 5,000 people attended the blues festival and now well over 20,000 are expected to attend. As a comparison, the Peaks will welcome 3,000 guests on a busy ski weekend, says Murphy. “Calabogie has developed a bit of a music brand,” he says, noting the blues festival in particular has “really caught its stride.” The festivals, says Murphy, features music workshops, vendors and attracts all kinds of people to the venue. And the camping allows patrons to enjoy themselves without the hassle of transportation to and from, creating a com-

Calabogie Peaks is one of the few music festivals, says Murphy, that offers that “beautiful mix” of features. The festival offers three distinct attractions: music, food from four rib-

bers competing for top honours, and a unique weekend camping experience. The family-oriented festival also has a designated kids zone offering about 17 different games. New this year is a ‘rib valet’ service, whereby people who want to get ribs only and place an order and pick them

up at the festival site. Murphy has high praise for the corps of more than 200 volunteers who pitch in to make the event a success. He said the event requires a significant workforce to run smoothly and volunteers receive nice perks like free admission, a t-shirt, meals and free camping.
