All aboard for Arnprior’s White Pine Festival The seventh annual White PIne Festival promises to be a “power-packed” weekend starting this Friday, Aug. 26 with entertainment at Robert Simpson Park followed by a movie in the park at dusk. The fun continues on Saturday and Sunday centred at the ABBA ball diamonds park. One of the major complementary events is a two-day Model Train Show at the Arnprior Curling Club. Gaston Moreau shows off some of his model trains at Metro as he promotes the show during the event. He hopes the show will spike interest in trains for the younger generation. For more on the White Pine Festival, see pages 2 and 3.

White Pine festival to feature car, boat, motorcycle shows Festival runs Friday through Sunday this weekend (Aug. 26-28) John Carter
John.carter@metroland.com
White Pine organizers are not letting a little thing like downtown revitalization construction work slow them down. With traffic in the downtown and access to Robert Simpson Park restricted, most of Arnprior’s major summer festival has been moved to the east side of town to the ABBA Ball Diamonds Park off McNab Street. The festival runs Friday through Sunday this weekend (Aug. 26-28). For the full schedule, see Page 3. The extra space at ABBA park allows a number of new attractions this year to complement the popular offerings back for another year. “We have a power-packed
weekend planned,” said organizer Mike Marcil, noting this year’s festival features car, boat and motorcycle shows. “We’ve been revitalized.”
We have a powerpacked weekend planned. MIKE MARCIL
Among the festival’s community partners are the Macnamara Field Naturalists, hosting nature tours on the nearby wildlife trails; the Arnprior Legion, hosting a monster bingo Sunday at 1 p.m.; the model train enthusiasts hosting a show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days at the Arnprior Curling Club; and the O’Brien Theatre with vintage movies at 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday.
Marcil said that instead of lamenting the loss of the festival’s traditional venues, he’s pleased to be able to “showcase a different part of the community.” If the festival is a big success, organizers will consider keeping it at the ABBA park, he said. The festival does have one event at Robert Simpson Park, as it begins Friday with Renfrew’s Young Country playing on the gazebo from 7 to 9 p.m. prior to the outdoor movie showing of Zootopia at dusk. Saturday will be Rock n’ Roll Revival day at the festival with residents encourage to dress up in 1950s and ‘60s garb (prizes will be given for the best dressed). It starts with the Heartbeats singing along with patrons at the kick-off breakfast at the Antrim Truck
Stop from 8 to 10 a.m. Down at the ABBA park, there will be a jump and jive dance instruction at noon, a Heartbeats concert at 3 p.m. and a twist and jive contest at 5 p.m. In between there will be plenty to see and do with the Arnprior Car Show and a motorcycle show and shine at the ball diamonds and a vintage boat display at Bell Park. As well, there will be rock-climbing, a zip line and bouncy castle for the adventurous. The fun continues Sunday with many of Saturday’s displays being bolstered by heavy trucks, tractors, snowmobile and ATVs. Marcil said while most of the festival attractions are free, donations of money and perishable items to the Arnprior District Food Bank are encouraged. As well, Sunday’s bingo will raise money for CHEO. For more, visit www.whitepinefestival.com.

Arnprior model train show on track for big turnout John Carter
John.carter@metroland.com
The second annual model train show being held this weekend (Aug. 27-28) in conjunction withthe Arnprior’s White Pine Festival is on track to be another big success. Organizer Gaston Moreau was ecstatic by the response to last year’s inaugural show. He’s even more excited about this year’s show, which runs both Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Arnprior Curling Club. Admission is free. “We have a fantastic show to give the people of Arnprior and the Valley,” he said. Moreau has attracted 15 model train exhibitors, up from nine, and doubled the number of vendors from two to four.
Join award-winning salamander conservationist Matt Ellerbeck (aka the Salamander Man) this Saturday during the White Pine Festival on the Macnamara trail tours. He will provide an insightful look at nature’s tailed amphibians. Both local and exotic species will be included. Ellerbeck is licenced with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and is a partner in the Amphibian Survial Alliance. For more, see the story on page 10.
As well, two master craftsmen, who make the building for the train displays will be on hand to talk about their hobby. BIGGER
“It will be much bigger this year … we’re taking up the whole ice surface at the curling club,” said Moreau. He said there will be six extra layouts this year, including a Lego display and two unique setups by the Gatineau model train club. One has three or four tiers, he noted. He expects model train enthusiasts from far away as Cornwall and maybe even Timmins will attend the show. Moreau, who lives in Arnprior, has been seriously involved in the train hobby since about 1985. “I enjoy it very much,” he said.

ARH employees express satisfaction with their supervisors Arnprior Regional Health (ARH) has once again scored impressive results in an employee survey. In a news release last week, ARH reported that the National Research Corporation (NRCC) recently announced that the Arnprior organization had ranked first in percentile rankings among the small site peer group (and second among sites of all sizes) in the ‘supervisor’ theme of the survey. The rankings are based on positive feedback from staff regarding their direct supervisor.
“Achieving top performer status in the province highlights well deserved recognition of our managers/supervisors from our front line staff,” said ARH CEO Eric Hanna. “This directly impacts our ability to recruit and retain staff and, most importantly, on patient/resident care. We are very proud of these results.” Results presented in the report are based on data collected from the NRCC Employee Experience Survey completed by participating Ontario hospitals between July 2014 and December 2015.

Arnprior Mayor David Reid told council that water was one of the town’s top priorities and they would get to the root cause of the water advisory quickly. “You have my assurance, we will get to the root cause as quickly as possible,” said Reid. “Obviously there is a process, and we will be communicating with the public on what we find,” said Reid of the Aug. 10 to 12 water advisory. “We will provide the public with details as quickly as we have good information and are certain with what we are communicating.” The town’s CAO Michael Wildman explained that staff began to investigate the root cause immediately following the advisory. “We know that it coincided with work being done outside of the downtown,” he said. “It’s a water project in the area of Havey and Daniel Streets,” Wildman added. “So the pressure drop was not localized to there; it was elsewhere in the south western quadrant.” Reeve Walter Stack asked Wildman to give council an update on the status of the Havey Street project. “There were some concerns given what happened the last time, so we are implementing some contingency measures to ensure we don’t replicate the conditions,” said Wildman. He explained staff are looking to implement a jumper system to back up the hydrants. “Almost how you back up a car battery with another battery,” said Wildman. “We will not be taking any steps that we feel would re-create that system again.” Wildman went on to explain the town is reviewing the water model with specialists on the potential cause. “As you can appreciate it is 40 kilometres or so of underground pipe, so finding it is a little bit tricky,” said Wildman. “The model is beginning to zero in on a few potential areas that are the root cause. The plan would be once we determine that cause is to report to council. I want to stress that rushing is not the way to do this.” He told council staff want to make sure whatever the cause is they don’t want it to happen again. “We want to make sure we get it right,” said Wild-

man. “There will be a report in due course when the modellers are confidant. The models are very much a science it is very complex. It is a series of precise computer models that test the system and how it behaves, the system itself can behave differently from hour to hour. It is very important to have all of the data analyzed.” When asked on the timeline of the report, the mayor said he was hoping that it is relatively soon. “I would expect if not the next council meeting, it would be coming up in the fall,” said Reid. However, Wildman waved his hand at the mayor to jump in. “Something to appreciate is we are testing multiply hydrants and pressuring them and see how they behave,” said Wildman. “I would not say weeks; I would not say many months, but I would not say weeks.” Staff do not have final numbers on how much the water advisory cost the town, but Wildman says that thankfully half of the water given out was donated. Giant Tiger emptied its Ottawa warehouse to bring water to Arnprior and Metro and No Frills also donated water. “So the cost of the water itself will be fairly low; not all have invoiced so can’t say how much. I don’t think it will be that large,” said Wildman. “Once we know we can also report on that.” He also said the town had volunteers knocking on doors to help, which was tremendous. He did not know exactly how many volunteered. He said all town staff were involved, including the emergency control group, to help make the response a great success.

Courage, my word
Televisions, computers and countless improvised screens across the country were tuned into the final show of the Tragically Hip’s Man Machine Poem Tour on Saturday night. With dignity and grace, lead singer Gord Downie, diagnosed with terminal brain cancer earlier this year, bid farewell to the people of Canada as the concert was broadcast live across the country on CBC. It was an evening that brought the nation, already joined in cheering for our Olympians, even closer together. CBC is reporting that the broadcast and live stream of The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration concert, reached 11.7 million people. The commercial-free special presentation was offered live on radio and TV and was streamed live online via the CBC’s website, apps, YouTube channel and Facebook page. It was a historic night and an emotional and inspiring performance. Even those who aren’t all that familiar with the Hip could appreciate the significance of the event. The Canadiana of the Tragically Hip certainly cements them into the heart of Canadians but so does the manner in which the band members carry themselves. Typically Canadian, they are not all that flashy, love a good time and moreover, care about those around them. They’ve paid their dues by playing in
small venues all over the country, including Renfrew, Calabogie and Arnprior. They’ve stayed true to their Canadian roots, showing no interest in fleeing to the bright lights and big money south of the border. At his final show, there were no recriminations or lamenting his own fate. Instead, Downie took advantage of his huge audience, which included Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, to urge that something be done to improve the situation for Canada’s indigenous peoples, a people “we’ve been trained our entire lives to ignore.” It was quite the contrast to the typical hedonistic, me-first rock stars with which we are so familiar. During his final concerts, Downie made sure it wasn’t just about him. In his understated way, he urged his fans to “Look after each other” and “Have a nice life,” ironic since his own diagnosis doesn’t give him much time to enjoy his forced retirement. With the launch of the Man Machine Poem tour, the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research was created. Total funds raised by Monday morning were $265,000 and growing. Downie’s plight reminds us of the devastating effects of cancer, regardless of fame and fortune. Thank you Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip, you have truly shown us the meaning of the word ‘Courage.’
Letters Policy
Do you know these players? Arnprior’s was a broomball hotbed long before hosting such major tournaments as the worlds in 2012 and the juveniles nationals earlier this year. This trophy-winning Arnprior Smiths Construction broomball team probably dates back to the 1960s, as it appears it was taken in the old hockey/curling arena on Elgin Street. Among the players pictured are Joe Ladourette and a Guillemette. Does anyone recognize any of the players? Let the Chronicle-Guide know and we’ll share it with our readers.

August is a good month for meeting up with wolves
When I was on the coast of James Bay surveying shorebirds, many other things caught my eye. At times thousands of dragonflies coursed low over the pools of water that punctuated the high tide mark, snapping up large horse flies also present in large numbers. Some, like the large Lake Darners, also occur in our area; others such as Zig-zag Darners do not stray much farther south than the Bay. Because James Bay connects to Hudson Bay, an extension of the Arctic Ocean, it contains salt water. Now, it is not as salty as the Atlantic Ocean because countless creeks and several large rivers constantly pump fresh water into it, diluting its salt content. But the salt level is sufficient to allow Jellyfish to dot the mudflats at low tide, and Beluga Whales to inhabit its waters. Just above the limits of high tide grow salt-tolerant plants such as Seaside Lungwort and Marsh Ragwort. Goose grass, another salt-tolerant plant, covers vast areas of the coast and as its name suggests, is food for geese. Thousands of Canada Geese visit James Bay, and can be seen dotting the mudflats where they rest and dine on the plants. Just before I left flocks of Snow Geese were arriving to join them. The geese attract the attention of more than shorebird watchers. Wolves visit the coast to dine on unsuspecting geese.
Twice I watched a distant wolf stalk them, with one being rewarded for its efforts. But the wolves along James Bay are not the same wolves found near our region. They are Gray Wolves (also known as Timber Wolves) the animals glorified in Farley Mowat’s fictitious Never Cry Wolf. Locally we have Eastern Coyotes and Eastern Wolves, the latter being most commonly encountered in Algonquin Park and the Madawaska Highlands. Eastern Wolves have been recognized as a distinct type of wolf by COSEWIC, the federal committee that assigns status to native plants and animals. The provincial body dealing with species at risk COSSARO has muddied the waters by naming the wolf ‘the Algonquin Wolf,’ Algonquin Park is home to Eastern Wolves; declaring it to be not a valid species but a near Algonquin’s McManus Lake. hybrid animal. This coming weekend, I am taking groups While there unquestionably has been hybridization in the history of this wolf, de- out to hear the wild howls of Eastern Wolves. Get face to face with nature at the White Pine Festival Karen Runtz
Macnamara Naturalists
Matt Ellerbeck lives with salamanders that take turns accompanying him to his lectures and presentations where people can meet them up close. And this Saturday, Aug. 27, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., you too can see these amazing creatures up close and personal at Arnprior’s White Pine Festival. Ellerbeck, aka the Salamander Man, kicks off the fun family- and nature-related activities that happen this weekend at the Macnamara Trailhead on McNab Street. While he and his treasured tailed amphibians will be
there on Saturday only, on both Saturday and Sunday members of the Macnamara Field Naturalists’ Club have lined up other experts and activities celebrating nature and highlighting the local treasure that is our Macnamara Trail. Naturalist David Spence will staff the nature tables Saturday and Sunday resident experts will identify ferns (Lis Allison), rocks (David Forsythe) and mushrooms (Suzanne Monnon). Both days, participants can try assorted activities geared to children, take one of six guided nature tours (four Saturday, two Sunday) and complete a nature quiz tied to birds, animals and plants they might encounter on

Plastic Bottle Recycling The Town has set up a large container in the parking lot at the Nick Smith Centre for the recycling of plastic bottles provided by the Town during the Drinking Water Advisory. If you have more plastic bottles that can fit in your blue box, please bring these containers to the Nick Smith Centre for recycling. Please note that the large 18.9 L jugs (water cooler jugs) from Nelson should not go into the large container, they should be given to a Town staff member at the Nick Smith Center separately. Please remember that rigid recyclable containers, like bottles, may not be placed in plastic bags. They must be placed loose in your blue bin or they will not be collected.

At a Young Macs outing to a wet woodland this past spring, young and old alike clustered in awe around lovely specimens of both Blue-spotted Salamanders and Spotted Salamanders (with yellow spots) encountered along with three types of frogs (see mfnc.ca/frogs-salamanders-and-othercreatures). The Young Macs is the Club’s program to connect children to the natural world. Eleven species of salamanders live in Ontario, where there are more salamander species than in any other province in Canada. Don’t miss the chance to see Ellerbeck’s amphibian companions Saturday. Ellerbeck first observed salamanders at a young age and was instantly fascinated and enthralled with them. His passion never waned and to help ensure their continuing survival, he became a full-time salamander advocate and conservationist. To help bring his message of salamander conservation to the public, he has given hundreds of educational talks and presentations. These include presentations for kids clubs, special interest groups, and at many schools. We are fortunate to have him share with us at the White Pine festival. Ellerbeck’s website at savethesalamanders. com is a hub of information on the threats these animals are facing and how the everyday average person can help with their protection and recovery, e.g. by making informed decisions, behavioral changes, taking on habitat management and stewardship activities. Find our more from ‘the Salamander Man’ Saturday. The Macnamara Trailhead schedule of events Aug. 27 and 28: Get up close with Matt Ellerbeck, the Salamander Man, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., Saturday only; Take a guided nature tour on Saturday (11 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.) or Sunday (12 p.m. and 2 p.m.); Have fun with Children’s Activities - Co-

NOTICE WATER MAIN FLUSHING – ALMONTE WARD Sept 12 – Oct 21
The Corporation of the Municipality of Mississippi Mills will be flushing the water mains in all areas of Almonte Ward beginning Monday, September 12th, 2016 to Friday, October 21st, 2016, during the hours of 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. (excluding weekends). This annual maintenance program is designed to remove the sediment that has accumulated in the water mains to maintain good water quality in the distribution system. This maintenance procedure is required under the Provincial Legislation and may result in temporary inconveniences to you such as reduced water pressure or red (discoloured) water. * Reduced water pressure should only be intermittent as the hydrants 12 Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, August 25, 2016
are being flushed. The pressure will return to normal once the flushing is completed. * If you detect discoloured (red) water, turn off your tap for 20 to 30 minutes; this should allow work crews enough time to complete the flushing. When work crews have left the area, turn on one COLD water tap for a few minutes to flush the system. * Discoloured water may occur in close proximity to the watermain flushing or many blocks, even kilometre’s away, depending on various factors such as their supply main size, location and demand flows. Unfortunately, it is impossible to predict the location and extent of the customers that may receive discoloured water. • Residents who live in the areas being flushed may want to collect containers of water for drinking and cooking, each day before the flushing program starts. • We recommend that you do not drink or wash laundry with red water. We appreciate your patience while this work is being completed and if you would like more information, please call the Roads & Public Works Department at 613-256-2064 and speak to Rod Cameron, ext. 232 or Cindy Hartwick ext. 258.

WATER RESTRICTIONS
The Watering Restrictions By-law 04-14 is designed to regulate and control the usage of water, within the Almonte Ward, in the hot summer months. Between May 1st and September 30th each year there are limitations on who can water and at what time. Odd number houses may water on odd calendar days and even numbered houses may water on even numbered days. Watering may occur between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. each day and from only one connection. Midday is the hottest time of the day and the water is more likely to be wasted through evaporation when watering at this time. Watering from more than one connection simply uses too much water at once. A significant amount of new grass or sod is exempted from these provisions for one week. Any other violations of the by-law may result in a fine. Municipal staff will be enforcing the Watering Restrictions.
Local residents talk climate change solutions at town hall session There was great energy and discussion at a town hall consultation meeting on climate change for residents of Renfrew-NipissingPembroke in Eganville Aug. 16. The event, hosted by three communitybased organizations, raised awareness of climate change issues and provided an opportunity for residents to get involved in proposing actions that can be taken by governments, businesses and individuals. The three hosts were Pipeline Awareness Renfrew County, Bonnechere River Watershed Project and Ottawa River Institute. VARIETY OF IDEAS
Many ideas were brought forward as the 46 participants (including about a half dozen local elected municipal officials) engaged in round table discussions on the following topics: • What are the solutions to reducing greenhouse gases that you would like to see governments, businesses, and communities implement? • What are your ideas to support the economy and create good jobs while reducing emissions÷ • What are some ideas to promote innovation and new technologies in the effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions? • What can Canada do to better adapt to impacts of climate change on the environment and support affected communities, in-
cluding Indigenous communities? • Putting a Price on Carbon. Some of the proposed solutions included: addressing the unique needs of rural Canadians; • providing incentives for clean technologies and removing subsidies for dirty technologies; • promoting local solutions (e.g., local food and energy production) with local control; • promoting the use of wood for energy and materials; • retaining/enhancing natural cover as carbon sinks. Local climate activist Duncan Noble said that “we need to react to climate change with the same urgency as we did to WWII” and that the organizers were “very pleased with the turn-out and the energy and enthusiasm of participants for climate change solutions.” According to Noble, it will take “many more conversations like the ones we had tonight to build and maintain the political will necessary to respond to climate change KATHRYN LINDSAY/SUBMITTED effectively.” Close to 50 people discuss how to address climate change in a Renfrew-Nipissing-PemBonnechere Valley Coun. Licence sticker prices going Youths! Adults! Seniors! Earn Extra Money! up again for car owners Keep Your Weekends Free! Michelle Nash Baker
michelle.nash@metroland.com
The cost to renew an Ontario licence plate for vehicles will go up again this September. The annual cost for a southern Ontario sticker will be $120 as of Sept. 1. A northern Ontario plate will cost $60. According to the Ministry of Transportation, the revenue generated from licence plate sticker fees is directed into general revenues. The goes to support all government investments, including investments in provincial transportation infrastructure. “These revenues help to ensure that the province has adequate funds to maintain our provincial roads and bridges in good repair for the benefit of all road users,” the ministry said in a written email statement. Renfrew County municipalities are lobbying to have
some of that money allocated to continue the fourlaning of Highway 17 up the Valley. For southern Ontario residents, the cost for a sticker renewal has increased by 62 per cent since 2011, when it was then only $74. For northern Ontario residents, the cost has risen from $41 to $60 – an increase of 46 per cent. It was in March 2012, when the Ontario govern-
ment announced it would be phasing in fee increases for driver and vehicle licence fees. According to the ministry, Ontario has been increasing these fees in an effort to ensure provincial roads, bridges and highways are safe and in good repair for future generations. Prior to the increase in 2012, licence plate sticker fees had not increased since 1997.

Local girls win at Northern Ontario singing contest Two Ottawa Valley girls, including one from Arnprior, have come home winners from a major singing competition in the North Bay area. Ainsley Phillips of Arnprior and Khloe Bertrand of Haley Station competed in the 28th annual Northern Ontario Open Country Singing Contest. The weekend-long event, hosted by the Nipissing Country Music Association, was held at the Billy Barber Complex in Callander over the Civic Holiday weekend. Competitors vied for a piece of the $10,000 in prize money. Each singer had to perform two selections, one ballad and one up-tempo song. Ainsley, only 12, entered the 18-andunder division. Backed by a live band that she only met and rehearsed with once, she performed, to the crowd’s delight, ‘Blue’ by LeAnn Rhimes with ease. Her up-tempo song was the toe-tapping ‘It Happens’ by Sugarland. She quickly became a favourite in her division, drawing many cheers and applause mid-song. Moving into the final round against four other strong competitors, Ainsley brought strong vocals and her best performance yet to secure first place, remarkable for a 12-year-old. She is a student of the Main Street School of Music in Arnprior, and credits its support for her continued success. Khloe competed in the 12-and-under Karaoke division. She wowed the crowds with her renditions of Rascal Flatt’s ‘I Won’t Let Go’ and Carrie Underwood’s ‘Church Bells’. Khloe was up against eight competitors in the preliminary rounds, and moved easily into the final round to take top prize amongst the five finalists. Her final performance was a brilliant display of crystal clear vocal abilities and stage performance. She has a few teachers in the Upper Ottawa Valley with whom she works to

“Gifted” but “uncontrollable” child? Don’t drug them… heal them! The world needs them! More and more, parents find their way into my clinic in a desperate attempt to make their life and their childs life easier. They usually have tried it all from counselling to medication and are at a point where it is no longer an option to just sit and wait for a miracle to happen. Their day to day challenges center around managing their child. The school calls to complain about their misbehaviour. Teachers often don’t know what to do, just as parents are at their width end with their patience. Arguments happen way too often and resentment, hatred and overwhelm become a way of life. Yet deep inside every mom and dad know their child is special…. soooo special! Just how can we turn things around? Let me tell you a little story: A few month ago both parents brought their young teenager into my clinic. I work with all of them together but also provide confidential individual time if necessary, as the goal is to respect everyone. Even though the child is going to be treated, mom and dad need to understand the ground work and rules and will be enlightened by my suggestions as it relates to their parenting style. This teenage boywas suffering from anxiety, ADD and ADHD. He is a bright and engaged young teenager, who loves to take control of his life. After the initial assessment I provided some energetic homeopathic remedies. I showed the boy how to take the remedies and he took the first dose right in my office. At the end, I briefly spoke with mom in private, while dad and his son waited in the car. Next month at the follow-up visit, mom was beaming from ear to ear and dad said: I can’t believe this, but he was another child from the first time he took a drop of your remedies! He immediately calmed down and was patiently waiting in the car for mom to come out, without getting impatient or angry as he usually would.”Mom continued saying:“I even can take him shopping now, without being afraid that I’ll have to run out of the store in embarrassment of him having a panic attack or a tantrum! His conflict resolution is so much easier and we are actually coming to a conclusion.”Then I turned to the boy and he smiled:“I don’t even have my nightmares anymore!” Healing at it’s purest. No drugs,no side effects! Results can be this immediate! Heilkunst - the different kind of counselling - where everybody counts and not just the one treated. Embrace your family.

Bishop impressive fourth at Rio Olympics Tiffany Lepack
tlepack@metroland.com
Ottawa Valley’s favourite Olympian was so close to a medal. The eventual bronze medalist beat Eganville’s Melissa Bishop by only 13-100ths of a second in the 800m final at the Rio Olympics. Bishop finished the race in fourth place with a time of 1:57:02, lowering her own Canadian record for the event. In the semi-final on Thursday night she came in second place with a time of 1:59:05. And she won her qualifying heat on Wednesday, Aug. 17 with a time of 1:58:38, which was the fastest time of all the qualifying heats. Hundreds of community members came to Eganville and District Public School to cheer her on. It was also announced there will be a homecoming parade for Bishop on Sept. 10 at 1:30 p.m. with floats, a pipe band and local sports teams. According to Mayor of Bonnechere Valley Township Jennifer Murphy they set up 350 chairs for the viewing party at the school. The gym was full with some people standing at the back. Murphy was very proud of the local star and the community turnout. “It’s fantastic and this is a work day too!” After the race, Murphy had tears of joy as she revealed she did not get a lot of sleep last night in anticipation of the race. “I was so excited and nervous about the live stream,” she said. Everyone in the gym loudly
cheered her on as she made her move to come in first. “She looked so good out there. She is a winner. To watch that heat and to see her come in first is just incredible,” said Murphy. Congratulations also poured in online, including from RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski who took to Twitter show his support. “Way to go Melissa! @BishopMelissa finishes 1st in her qualifying heat in the 800m. On to the semi-finals. We’re all behind you!” he said in a tweet after the race. There was a wide array of people at the viewing party, from those who had never met the 28-year-old Olympian to those who remember when she was a baby. Jocelyn Smith, who recently moved to Eganville, had her face painted with Bishop’s team logo. She brought her kids to the event. “We just moved here but we have caught the fever. It’s incredible. Obviously she has put in a lot of hard work and dedication,” said Smith. “She is a role model and our kids can’t stop talking about her.” Laura Griffith used to babysit Bishop and teared up when she spoke of her. “I’m just so excited. I can’t believe this little six month old came into my house and now here she is,” said Griffith. Anna Myers’ daughter was dancing in the gym shouting ‘Go Melissa’ before the race started. “Lily met her at school and she really likes her,” said Myers. “She’s a really good runner and a really good team sport.”

Packers make trade with Renfrew
The Arnprior Packers have agreed to a trade with their archrivals before the season has even started. The Packers picked up leftwinger Zack Elliott, from Kanata
and in exchange they sent Arnprior native Curtis Foster to Renfrew. The Packers exhibition season will have already kicked off by the time this is read. In a home and away series, Arnprior played Rich-
mond on Aug. 23 and Richmond came into Arnprior on Aug. 24. It is all in the lead-up to the CCHL2 showcase at the SensPlex in Kanata on Labour Day weekend.

Where do the summer months go? May, June and July’s golfing weather was wonderful between the odd wind and rain storms and then that lovely hot humidity which made for easy swinging. Events at Mountain Creek Golf Course, such as the Tin Cup and the British Open, were well attended. Mountain Creek golfers are now into August’s golf events such as the Swiss Open, the Three-Man, Senior Intersectional qualifiers and tourneys for both men and women, for example the renowned Mulvihill Cup. The Club Championships at month’s end must also be prepped for. And the sign up sheet for September’s extremely popular Glow Ball tourney is, we hear, fully subscribed already. That is one very popular event and open to the public, so keep an eye open for it next year. Both the Ladies’ and Men’s Nights have been going full bore with good participation as have the senior’s Monday nights and Wednesday afternoons. The latter group has so much fun with each other and each week’s varied formats, it’s a pleasure to participate. Their Christmas in July was one excellent time. With the weather, especially the humidity, being the equal of Florida’s lately, organizer Gord Clark offered up a ‘Florida Scramble’ where the best hit of a four-person team saw that person sit out the next hit. A special reduction on cart fees saw great attendance despite the heat and humidity as our seniors are no wilting violets. The winning foursome consisted of Rick Sulpher, Peggy Gray, Erna Othmer and Sylvia Long with a net 19. If you haven’t tried the Friday Nine and Dine, do make a reservation this week, as the restaurant’s own garden provides the freshest of veggies, and the formats are lots of fun. Mountain Creek’s Intersectional results this year were a case of trying very hard and succeeding a little. Our ladies in H Division of the Ottawa Valley Golf Association, took only eight points (six of which attributed to Karen Buckle), so having lost at Kingsway, MC will move down a division. As for the men, despite a valiant effort to ward off Deep River, Algonquin and Kingsway, they took 13 pointsm so they too will drop down a division. Better luck next year! And best of luck to those competing in the Senior Men’s and Women’s Intersectionals just ahead. Some recent personal achievements worth mentioning are: • Connie Deschamps’ eagle on hole #6; • Gregory Schaepper shot a 74; • Elaine Pritchard won the Tombstone being the ‘lone survivor’; • Stu Thompson shot a personal best of 72 on July 21, a very windy night; • Zach Fagan birdied 4 out of 9 holes on July men’s night; • same event, longest putt on #11 was made by Glenn Wilson. Closest to the hole on 14 was won by Eric Irons, on #16 was won by Greg Schaepper and closest to hole 18 (2nd shot) was won by Zach Fagan. The course itself has been well managed through the occasional dry spell, and the greens are as challenging as ever. Recently a representative of Golf Canada met with owner/pro Jonathan Schaepper, as there is intent to re-rate the course next year for slope including having the yellow tees rated for men. (The yellow tees are the course’s most advanced tees, suitable for those who, due to youth, age or disability, require less distance.) Mountain Creek course was last rated in 2012 and the blue tees were changed from a 120 slope to 112. It was a surprise, then, to see the slope change from the original 120 slope given the following changes: the pond added on the 6th hole; the 4th, 13th, 15th and 17th holes were lengthened by 20 yards; waste bunker added between 1 and 9 put in; bunkers on 10 were put in; bunker on 3 was moved from the right to the left side of green; bunker on 15 was put in; pond on the 14th hole. No doubt the mallard duck and her seven ducklings living there won›t be a factor in the re-rating. It’ll be interesting to see what happens to the rating next year. Chris McLaughlin shared this one with fellow golfers: when missing a shot due to lifting one’s head. It’s called ‘Premature admiration’. With files from Gary Croucher and Gordon Clark
Pumptrack comes to Valley Sunday Tiffany Lepack
tlepack@metroland.com
Let’s get ready to roll! The Demo Pumptrack Tour hosted by the Canadian Ramp Company will be setting up its all wheel pumptrack at Renfrew’s Ma-Te-Way Park on this Sunday, Aug. 28 from 3 to 6 p.m. Jo-anne Caldwell says the Town of Renfrew applied to be a tour stop and made it on the summer crossCanada tour list.
“This is an excellent opportunity to try out a pumptrack,” said Caldwell. “It really is a rare event to have a pumptrack come to town.” Ryan Hicks, sales manager with Canadian Ramp Company, hopes the municipality will see the need for a track in the community. “It’s an awesome tour, we wanted to do it to showcase the pumptrack and to get the word out and let communities know this is another option for the youth in their community.” The track, which will be set up in
the parking lot, will be beside the town’s all-wheel park. “It (the all wheel park) is now fully functional with a new slab and ramps that are moved back on it,” said Caldwell. The pumptrack is for bikes, scooters, skateboards and even push bikes for young kids. The town will have all of these items and helmets that people can borrow for free to try it out. “I think it is going to appeal to a wide age group, even the moms
and dads who are normally on the sidelines,” said Caldwell. “Even if you are not riding on the track you can come and watch others.” The track itself is 55 feet long and 21 feet wide. “The idea is to ride around on the track without pedalling, you use your body motion to pick up speed over the bumps and turns,” explained Hicks. There will also be a free barbecue and the town’s mobile sports/ toy trailer and bouncy castle set up by the playground. There is no rain date set for the event. One key point is it is only going

ahead if the weather is good,” said Caldwell. Pumptracks started in Europe and three years ago Canadian Ramp Company brought them over to Canada. The base cost for a track is $30,000. “You can go as big as you want,” said Hicks. Currently there are some pumptracks in the Toronto area. The next stop on the tour is in New Brunswick.“We have been taking it everywhere,” said Hicks. For more information on the tracks, visit www.canadianrampcompany.ca .

Looking ahead
Despite the rain Friday and Saturday, there were bright spots for the Arnprior Fair on Aug. 11 to 14, Kids enjoyed the variety of rides at the World’s Finest Shows midway. Thursday’s demolition derby drew a decent crowd despite the water ban in town and the Road Hammers with Jason McCoy wowed the crowd Friday, especially when they were joined on stage by local band River Town Saints and when they came into beer tent after the show to sign autographs.

Having survived this year’s adversity (too much water, too little water), Arnprior Fair Board chairman Jeff Desarmia is looking forward to next year. With Canada celebrating its 150th birthday in 2017, the fair board has some bright ideas on how to make next year’s event extra special, he said. He has his eye on incorporating more agricultural events, maybe even horse racing, to celebrate the fair’s roots. Desarmia was frustrated with the rainy weather that washed out most of Friday and Saturday at the fair and the hardship that came with the town’s water ban. The fair board had organized a strong line-up for the fair, especially the entertainment, which he called the Valley’s best, so was expecting a huge turnout. However, he was proud that fair organizers managed to make the best out of what they were given, turning Saturday’s cancelled demolition derby into a mud race at moment’s notice and arranging for alternate sources of water during the ban.

In Loving Memory of
Brian Holt August 12, 1949 – August 25, 2015 God saw you getting tired; a cure was not to be. He wrapped you in His loving arms and whispered “Come to me”. You suffered much in silence, our spirit did not bend, You faced your pain with courage until the bitter end. You tried so hard to stay with us, your fight was not in vain. God took you to His loving home and freed you from your pain. A golden heart stopped beating, two working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. The family of Brian Holt want to express gratitude to the many friends, family members, co-workers and neighbours for your thoughtfulness and sympathy. Thank you to the pallbearers, St. Paul’s Church and the staff of McPhail and Perkins and all his doctors and nurses. To anyone we may have missed please accept our deepest thanks through this very difficult time. Sincerely, Margaret, Barry, Bonnie, Dylan, Anna, Bruce, Leah, Bronsyn and Chayse
June 19, 1952 – August 23, 2014. The moment that you died Our hearts were torn in two, One side filled with heartache, The other died with you. We often lie awake at night, When the world is fast asleep, and Take a walk down memory lane, With tears upon our cheeks. Remembering you is easy, We do it everyday, But missing you is heartache That never goes away. We hold you tightly within our hearts And there you will remain. Until the joyous day arrives, That we will meet again. Forever Loved, Ronda & Paul XO

Don’t think of him as gone away His journey’s just begun Life holds so many facetsThis earth is only one. Just think of him as resting From the sorrow and the tears In a place of warmth and comfort Where there are no days and years. Think how he must be wishing That we could know today How nothing but our sadness can really pass away. And think of him as living In the hearts of those he touched… For nothing loved is ever lost And he was loved so much Always remembered, Judy, Jon & Lyndsey, Whitney & Hartlee CLR702245

It’s not too late to consider the Shawville Fair as a Labour Day weekend excursion. The 160th edition of the fair is set to take place from Sept. 1 to 5. Weekend passes for the Pontiac Agricultural Society event are available until Wednesday, Aug. 31 at 9 p.m. “One price admission makes it an affordable event, said the society’s president Sara Knox. They can be purchased online - see shawvillefair.ca for more information – or at the society’s office. The society and countless volunteers allow the Shawville Fair to hit the milestone of 160 years. There have been many memorable moments to recount, but one that still gets talked about is when Stompin’ Tom Connors made an appearance in 2005. It is in the record books as the biggest night in the fair’s history with estimates of 30,000 to 40,000 people being in attendance for just that day. It was definitely a crowd to remember as the town’s population doesn’t even hit 2,000. The WWW.STREETFLEAMARKET.NET fair tends to average 30,000 to 40,000 people for CLS463706_0825

the entire five-day weekend. This year, crowds can take in musical headliners such as Kim Mitchell (Friday), Brett Kissel (Saturday) and Gord Bamford (Sunday). Valley bands Ambush, Mick Armitage Band and Phil Denault will be showcased throughout the weekend. It will probably be the final appearance for the Mick Armitage Band members at the fair as they announced their retirement for February 2017. The gates open on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 4 p.m. The midway is once again run by Beauce Carnaval for the weekend. The traditional kickoff event is the popular truck and tractor pull at 7 p.m. and the official opening ceremony is set for 7:30 p.m. There will also the exhibits to view, heavy horse and Holstein shows to watch, and demonstrations of sheep-shearing, bee-keeping and butter-making. Fairgoers can also check out performances by Little Ray’s Reptiles, West Coast Lumberjack Shows and the award-winning ArnpriorMcNab Pipes and Drums. The demolition derby is on the Labour Day Monday. There is plenty more throughout the weekend in line with the event’s agricultural roots.

OPP reminds public to be safe with buses and students on the road Tiffany Lepack
tlepack@metroland.com
The wheels on the bus go round and round! Yes, it is almost time for school buses to hit the road and everyone should be prepared for the extra traffic. Community Safety Const. Beth Ethier with the Ontario Provincial Police Upper Ottawa Valley detachment says motorists should be aware of the expected increase in pedestrians, cyclists and school buses, and give themselves extra commuting time. “We want to remind the public to be on the lookout for students and school buses as of Sept. 6,” said Ethier. “They will be back on the road so people should adjust their schedules because the buses will be stopping and starting so they should give themselves time.” Motorists encountering a stopped school bus that has its overhead red signal-lights
flashing must stop before reaching the bus and shall not proceed until the bus moves or the overhead red signal-lights have stopped flashing. “I want to remind them to stop when the overhead red signal lights are flashing,” said Ethier. Under Section 175(11) of the Highway Traffic Act, the minimum fine for failing to stop is $400. This applies whether you are meeting or following a school bus, and includes multi-lane roads. (The only exception is to traffic when driving on a road with a median traffic coming from the opposite direction is not required to stop.) It is also important to be aware of the extra pedestrian traffic as students make their way to school “Children may be excited for back to school so drivers should be extra cautious, especially in school zones,” said Ethier.
FILE
School buses will soon be on the road as students head back to school, first day of school is Sept. 6. “Pay attention and be prepared to stop to make sure everyone gets safely to school.” Parents of students who will be walking or cycling to school are encouraged to speak with their children about the rules of the road that apply to them. Drivers can expect to see an increased police presence.
“Officers will be on patrol in early September,” said Ethier. The Renfrew Children’s Centre Community Action Program for Children is hosting a School Bus Safety session with Renfrew County Buslines on Aug. 25 at 850 O’Brien Rd. from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. To register, contact the centre at 613-432-9998.

Public school board adds second student trustee The Renfrew County District School Board will have an Edge to it this year. Arnprior District High School student Nicholas Edge has been elected one of two student representatives on the public school board for 2016-17. Edge was elected by 40 student council delegates from our seven secondary schools who gathered at the board office late in recently completed school year. The students spent the morning discussing and developing mental health initiatives and the afternoon hearing from candidates for student trustee. Five candidates ran for the position of student trustee. Edge, a Grade 11 student at Arnprior District high school, was chosen. “I’m thrilled and look forward to getting a chance to build strong communication lines between student councils across the board as well as DEREK DUNN/SUBMITTED providing a safe space for LGBTQ Arnprior District High School student Nick Edge is one of two identified students and making sure students elected by his peers to represent them on the Ren- special education students are heard,” he said. frew County District School Board.

“Nick was an absolutely exceptional candidate, and based on his platform I can’t imagine anyone else better fulfilling the role of RCDSB student trustee,” said current student trustee Connor Webster. “His drive and passion was certainly evident in his appearance here today, and I look forward to working with and mentoring him in the role over the course of the 2016-2017 school year.” Last year the school board voted to expand to two student trustees. The move was in recognition of the importance of amplifying the student voice at the table and ensuring that their issues would continue beyond the term of a student trustee. “The student trustees serve an important role for the RCDSB,” said board chair Dave Shields. “They get a chance to get involved in their own education by engaging their peers to share ideas while communicating to their peers when important decisions are made. I look forward to welcoming Nick to the
board table.” To qualify to run as a student trustee, a student has to meet the following: • be a Canadian citizen who is a resident of Renfrew County; • be enrolled as a full-time day school student at any of the seven secondary schools under the jurisdiction of the board, full-time being defined as taking a minimum of 3.0 credits per semester; • continued to be enrolled as a fulltime student in a senior division curriculum program during the time of service as a student trustee; • achieved the provincial standard (Level 3 – 70-79 per cent) or higher in six of eight of the most recent credits granted; • demonstrated a sustained interest and prior involvement in leadership activities, either through school-based or community-based clubs, organizations and/or events; • not served as a student trustee with the Renfrew County District School Board in the past.

The joy of reading is a gift to children Sharing with your children the joy of reading is to offer them the most beautiful gift in the world: an open door to wonder and imagination, which they will be able to enjoy for the rest of their lives. There is no need to wait: research shows that children experience more academic success when the pleasures of words and reading are kindled before they start school. It is important, of course, to adapt the reading material to the age of the child. From zero to 2 years, babies will literally devour their books! Baby books must be very durable and, ideally, washable. As soon as babies can focus on an image, sharing a book together with a parent is a great way to spend time together. From three to five years, children start to be interested in stories with a narrative. Toddlers are likely to ask you to read them the same book night after night. Comply without grumbling, because a passion is being born! Preschoolers, on the other hand, usually appreciate a variety of stories and illustrations. When they are school-age, continue to read to your children, even if they already know how to read alone. Then, gradually, take it in turns to read in order to encourage their progress. In addition to readers sent home from school, visit your local library as well so that you children can have access to a wider variety of books. An enjoyable outing to the library can be an incentive to read in itself. Last but not least, if they see you reading and hear you talking passionately about the books that you read, your children will almost inevitably grow up with a desire to do the same.

Tools for School seeks donations to help Renfrew County students Tiffany Lepack
tlepack@metroland.com
Back-to-school season is well underway and for some it is the happiest time of the year. But for other families facing financial hardships it can be stressful wondering how they will send their children to school with everything they need. The Child Poverty Action Network (CPAN) has been running Tools for School in Renfrew County since 2000. The objective of the program is to ensure all children in the county have the opportunity to participate fully in school, regardless of their family’s financial status. “The goal is to make sure they all have a backpack, basic school supplies and a pair of shoes,” said Lyn Smith, executive director of CPAN. “Research has proven that children who have the tools to learn are more likely to graduate.” The program relies on donations and she encourages businesses or individuals to sponsor a child because they do not receive any government funding. “It costs $75 to sponsor a child,” said Smith. As of Aug. 18 they had 399 children already signed up in Renfrew County and Smith suspects they will have more than 1,000 children in need.

at 28.7 per cent. If you go one step further to the 0-5 age range it is even higher with 36 per cent living in poverty,” said Smith. She noted that Renfrew is the second highest in all of the coun-
ty with 24.3 per cent of children 0-17 years of age living in lowincome homes and 22 per cent under five. In Admaston-Bromley the numbers change again with only 4.7 per cent living in low-income households. On Aug. 18, Smith received two donations for the program. The first was from Hebron Christian Reform Community Church, which donated $1,292 to the program. The church raised the money at a dinner and they split the funds raised between the efforts to support a local refugee family and the Tools for School program. The second donation was from Arnprior’s St. John Chrysostom Catholic Women’s League for $1,040, who raised the money at its annual ‘Change for Change’ collection during the annual Our Lady of Good Counsel service, when the congregation was asked to put any loose change into the plate. “Some of the CWL women members are retired teachers and they promoted the cause and everyone supported it to help the kids go back to school and give them a good start,” said Joan Kelly, CWL president. Yes, believe it or not we did make it through July and August. Seemed like the old days to some, eh? Actual hot weather in the summer. Its been a strange one; for some glorious, for others without AC or a way to get to the beach, it was just plain hot. Poor robins weren’t successful in making babies this year, at my place anyway; maybe on top of the outdoor motion lights weren’t a good choice. Days are already getting shorter, but evenings are still nice and thank you Mother Nature for the rain. I was getting awful tired of pulling that hose out every night. Speaking of water .... thanks folks for being so understanding about our town incident and our apologies for no hamburgs on hamburg day that Friday. Just didn’t want to take any chances. And by gosh, we all survived without our weekly fix. We’re back on schedule this week and from here on. Fall entertainment and annual events are all coming up quickly. Sept. 17 is dinner and a comedian doing a Red Skelton show. Flyers are out and the tickets are available. The phone numbers for people with tickets are available at the Legion. Tickets will not be sold at the bar. So get your tickets early from the contacts. Same deal again on the Oct. 3 when some of our favourite entertainers have joined up to give us a combination night to remember. Simon & Elvis have got themselves a Lady. The annual Veterans dinner is planned to begin the Legion Week as always on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.

Ted Graham, Patrick Simmons and Art Barr present a new sign to Arnprior Legion president Harry Hereford at the August executive meeting. The sign will hang in the Veterans Memorial Gardens in Legion Park on Edey Street.
Again you must be registered by Monday, Sept. 13. Remember one veteran and one guest/spouse or a caregiver. If a widow/widower of a veteran is attending the same applies, one guest or a caregiver. The branch will have a number of things happening during that week, so drop in and take part. big bingo on the Monday night, a volunteers night, golf and dinner on the Saturday, and Friday hamburgs and jam night. Come along and kick up your heels; have some fun. Things are going well in the kitchen area with hamburgers flipping out of there every Friday, Monday nights bingo-goers keeping the kitchen busy with French fries and goodies, and the last Saturday of the month still being the best deal and breakfast in town. They are so busy they’ve worn out some of the cooks. They’re always looking for help when catering and for the usual kitchen events. Don’t forget the Saturday afternoon entertainment - twice a month. The Legion gardener and his band of merry helpers have been busy all summer. The gardens look great as usual. If you haven’t been by lately, do go have a look. They are always coming up with new ideas to improve it. There is a new sign being installed thanks to the efforts of Art Barr and Patrick Simmonds and the gardens very good friend Bonnie Giles for the art work and also the fantastic paintings on the water barrels. It seems impossible that a year has passed sooo fast, but before you know it, we will be offering Poppies in honour of our fallen commrades and preparing for the Remembrance Day Parade and Service. I’m sure you have all noticed the parking lot is complete. It’s been a long haul but definitely worth it. It’s nice to see people are parking properly and most trucks have found a nice safe roomy spot at the back along the north side. Looks like it’s made for them. That’s all for this time folks. See you at the Legion.

Flour and sugar bags took on many uses from rags to blouses Mother was ready to tackle another batch of flour and sugar bags. If she was lucky, she got a sugar bag from Mr. Briscoe at the General Store in Northcote after he finished filling paper bags to put on the shelf in different pound sizes. These bags were smaller than the ones she got at the gristmill, but the printed dye, for some reason, was much harder to get rid of. Depending on what she made out of the flour bags, getting all the dye out wasn’t all that important. It wasn’t unusual to crawl into sheets, made from four opened flour bags, and to still have Red Roses Flour printed for all to see. When Mother was tackling the dye in the bags, you would know what she was doing when you came in the gate at the back yard. You could smell javel water and lye soap a mile away. Once the bags had been washed at least three
and into the washtub, she would pull each bag out and put it in the big granite dishpan. This was when she would know if the whole exercise was a complete bust. Which more often than not, it was. For the very best of the MARY COOK bags, the smaller sugar bags, for instance, they times, their seams opened, and all would be further treated to a wash the strings and threads gotten rid of water and lemon juice, and then of, came the job of trying to make spread out on the grass to let the the bags suitable for tea towels, un- sun finish the job. Sadly, that didn’t derpants for my sister and me, and always work either, and there it of course, pinny aprons, and more would be, the printing, as large as life, maybe a little bit faded, but far often than not, blouses. But getting the dye out was a from being completely removed. I could see the look on Mother’s major job for Mother. The bags would soak overnight in the cop- face when the javel water didn’t per washtub, and if Mother was work. It was the same look she got lucky, the dyes would have greatly when she tried to make over somefaded from the jar of javel water. thing that had come in the handUsing the tongs she used when get- me-down box from Aunt Lizzie in ting the whites out of boiling water Regina, realizing the hopelessness

the waist to my knees, and began cutting it up. There was no such thing as having a pattern to go by. I knew I was in for another pair of flour bag bloomers. Thankfully, the bloomers I would wear to the Northcote School, had seen many, many washings, and the ones Mother was sewing that night would be ‘play bloomers’ until they had been what she called “well broken in”. Which meant, of course, the printing would be all but gone. Bloomers made out of flour or sugar bags would not be the most comfortable of underwear until they had been washed many times. For the first few times of wearing them, they felt like pieces of cardboard against your body, and the tight elastic in the legs didn’t help to soften them either. Mother had the new bloomers finished before I went to bed. I would wear them often during the summer, breaking them in, and grateful that by the time I went back to the Northcote School, the bright red and blue words, “PRIDE OF MOSSY OAK® CAMO THE VALLEY” across the seat REPAIR TAPE would be all but Heavy duty cloth backing, faded away. After the kitchen was redded up, Audrey was sent out to bring in the few flour bags, and the one sugar bag which had been treated to the beating sun for the whole afternoon. Sadly, the printing was as bold as ever. Mother sighed, got out the scissors, and got down to the job of figuring out what could be made. Some would become “not for company” tea towels. The few, which had faded the most, would do for pillowslips and sheets. She held up the one sugar bag, limp from so many washings and javel treatments, and decided it would have to do for a few dishcloths. Then she called me over to the sewing machine, held up one of the flour bags, measured my body from
