Run Sunday Help keep Terry Fox’s dream of a cure for cancer alive. Arnprior’s Terry Fox Run is this Sunday, Sept. 17 at the Arnprior Fairgrounds, on the track behind Nick Smith Centre. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. followed by stretches and a warm up. The run (or walk) begins at 9. New this year is co-organizer Curtis Jeror, a Grade 6 student at St. John XXIII. He is the youngest person to lead the run in its 38-year history. See his story on page 4. The goal this year is to raise $10,200 for the Canadian Cancer Society. That is about $1 per every resident in town. According to Cancer.ca, every hour, eight Canadians die of cancer.

Pipeline plan put on hold

Thrifty business

The Ottawa Valley Thrift Shop has been in a couple of locations but will settle at 83 John St. The place recently obtained a municipal a second grant to fix up the exterior. The first $2,500 went to siding on the left overlooking RBC parking lot. The second $2,034 will go toward facade improvements. Council asked staff to ensure no furniture for sale or other items be left outside as per the shop’s past practice.

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

The proposed Energy East pipeline to ship diluted bitumen across the country, including under the Madawaska River, was put on hiatus by the applicant. TransCanada Corp. asked the National Energy Board (NEB) last week to suspend its plan for the 4,500-pipeline between Alberta and New Brunswick. The company wants one month to determine if the NEB’s environmental assessment of the line is too much of a hamper on profitability. The recent series of setbacks is good news to environmentalists like Mark MacKenzie, former president of the Green Party of Canada. He has followed the science and politics surrounding the controversial proposal. He is “surprised” the NEB is measuring greenhouse gas emissions created at all stages, from oilsands to export.

Derek Dunn/Metroland

“This is the biggest blow that they’ve had,” said MacKenzie, who sits on McNab/Braeside council. “I think there is a very low chance Energy East will happen.” It would be difficult for the federal Liberal government to continue to portray itself as a friend of the environment, he said, while approving more pipelines; three have been approved already. A fourth in Energy East would make reaching international climate change obligations all but impossible. “It would be difficult to balance developing the tarsands and reach the targets set out in the Paris Accord at the same time,” said MacKenzie. From a municipal level of government viewpoint, he agrees with Arnprior Mayor David Reid on major projects like Energy East: ask higher levels of government to make safety a top priority. Both municipalities have been in contact to ensure their concerns are heard.

Arnprior park petition yet to sway town council DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

At least two members of Arnprior council are confident that when people learn why Allan Drive Park is being sold, they will stop petitioning against it. About 100 signatures appeared on a petition submitted to town hall. They oppose the sale of a triangular-shaped empty space located behind the Arnprior Shopping Mall gorge. The municipality could get about $230,000 for the land, which has a wooden sign reading Allan Drive Park and garbage can, but no playground or picnic tables.

When presented at the Aug. 28 council meeting, both Mayor David Reid and Reeve Walter Stack suggested the petition wouldn’t garner nearly as many supporters if the whole story was revealed. Reid explained that he has responded to Scott Murray, the lawyer hired to represent petitioners. He admits that the way it is worded, he would have signed the document. But several points were excluded: • It was never zoned as parkland. It has been zoned residential for many years, presumably with the approval of several councils, so it can be sold as it is. • It fails to meet criteria needed for parkland,

which is five per cent of a neighbourhood. There are four active parks nearby, including Legion Park and the play structure at St. John XXIII. (The town has user agreements with all schools in the municipality.) • This doesn’t take money away from parklands. This is among other inactive properties being sold to raise some $600,000 for the waterfront redevelopment that “will benefit the entire town,” Reid said. “I still feel this is the thing to do. Yes, we are not going to take this petition lightly,” he said. “Council will vote on it and can speak to it at that meeting. But I just think it’s the right thing

to do.” Stack agreed, adding it has never been used as a park, and that it is already a heavily populated area so three more homes won’t make a big difference. “I’ve had conversations with people in that area, and I can tell you not a majority signed that petition,” Stack said. “When you tell them the money is going to the waterfront they agreed.” Murray provided Metroland Media with the name and phone number of a petitioner, but several attempts to reach the person were unsuccessful.

Make sure to get your copy of the Town’s recreation guide, Arnprior Life, inserted in this weeks Arnprior Chronicle - Guide. Employment Opportunity – Crossing Guards Needed

Arnprior plans to sell off Allan Drive Park to make way for homes. Area residents oppose the idea and have signed a petition to that effect.

2017 Fall Hydrant Flush Value Maintenance Program The Public Works Department in conjunction with the Town’s Fall Hydrant Flush program is conducting a Valve Maintenance Program. The hydrant flush will clean the distribution system by flushing any standing red water. The valve maintenance program is designed to clean and exercise the valves and by doing so will extend their life as well as determine whether the valves are operable. The work is planned for September 11 – November 3rd, 2017 and will be completed in the shortest period of time possible. This procedure is routine but it may result in some temporary inconveniences such as poor water pressure or “red” water. Do not be alarmed. What you should know: • If coloured water is detected, please open your COLD water taps to clear the system. • The coloured water is not hazardous to health. • This situation is temporary and should not last any longer than two hours at most. For more information, please contact John Steckly, Director of Public Works at 613-623-4231 ext. 1831

Big Brothers Big Sisters meeting Sept. 21 As Canada’s leading child and youth mentoring charity, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) facilitates life-changing relationships that inspire and empower children and youth to reach their full potential. September is Big Brothers Big Sisters Month across Canada. This month, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Renfrew County is asking Renfrew County citizens to imagine who a young person can become when they have the support of a caring adult in their lives. Research demonstrates mentoring leads to significant reductions in risky behaviour, violence, bullying and substance use, as well as significant increases in civic engagement, positive mental health and academic achievement. Our goal is to recruit 30 mentors in 30 Days to match with the local children/youth on our waiting list. The ‘Meet the Mentor’ volunteer information session is where interested individuals can come out to learn more about the organization, what it takes to become a mentor, what volunteer opportunities are available, and to hear testimonials of current mentors. The next Meet the Mentor volunteer information session will take place at the Arnprior Public Library on Thursday, Sept. 21, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Refreshments and resources on site. If you or someone you know has one to four hours a week to share with a deserving child, please contact BBBSRC: info@bbbso.ca, 1-844-414-2227 or visit their website www.bbbsrc.ca.

Ruck 2 Remember, the organization putting on the event, is a not-for-profit organization that is in it’s fourth year raising funds and awareness for issues facing veterans. Their flagship event every year is the “Road To Recovery,” and this year the event will be coming to the Ottawa Valley to once again raise awareness for veterans and funds for “Operation: Leave the Streets Behind,” a veterans charity managed by the Royal Canadian Legion. Operation Leave the Streets behind is a registered charity that works to transition veterans off the streets into sustainable housing. It works hand in hand with the legion’s other resources to help get the veteran in need long-term funding, work, housing and support as needed. To date the program has assisted 525 veterans in more than 117 communities -- including 93 in the Ottawa Region. The “Ruck 2 Remember” team will be starting at the Petawawa Legion, rallying at 8 a.m. and stepping off at 9 a.m. From there they will make their way south to Cobden’s Legion Hall. The next day the team will step off again from the hall at 10 a.m and continue south until they reach Branch 148 in Renfrew. Day 3 will have the team starting off at 9 a.m. and getting to Arnprior’s legion hall where they will rest and refresh before the final leg on the 17th covering 43 kilometres from Arnprior to the Kanata legion.

The Corporation of the Municipality of Mississippi Mills will be flushing the water mains in all areas of Almonte Ward beginning Monday, September 18th, 2017 to Friday, October 20th, 2017, during the hours of 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. (excluding weekends). This annual maintenance program is designed to remove the sediment that has accumulated in the water mains to maintain good water quality in the distribution system. This maintenance procedure is required under the Provincial Legislation and may result in temporary inconveniences to you such as reduced water pressure or red (discoloured) water. • Reduced water pressure should only be intermittent as the hydrants are being flushed. The pressure will return to normal once the flushing is completed. • If you detect discoloured (red) water, turn off your tap for 20 to 30 minutes; this should allow work crews enough time to complete the flushing. When work crews have left the area, turn on one COLD water tap for a few minutes to flush the system. • Discoloured water may occur in close proximity to the watermain flushing or many blocks, even kilometres away, depending on various factors such as their supply main size, location and demand flows. Unfortunately, it is impossible to predict the location and extent of the customers that may receive discoloured water. • Residents who live in the areas being flushed may want to collect containers of water for drinking and cooking, each day before the flushing program starts. • We recommend that you do not drink or wash laundry with red water. We appreciate your patience while this work is being completed and if you would like more information, please call the Roads & Public Works Department at 613-256-2064 and speak to Rod Cameron, ext. 232 or Cindy Hartwick ext. 258.

OPINION

Connected to your community

Keeping Terry’s hope alive It’s an event that takes place every year, yet its importance never wanes. Each year, millions of participants in 25 countries across the globe walk, run or bike in the annual Terry Fox Run. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, nearly 1 in 2 Canadians can expect to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Set for Renfrew and Arnprior on Sunday, Sept. 17, countless local participants lend their support to the event, which raises much-needed funds for cancer research. Terry Fox was diagnosed with bone cancer in his right leg in 1977 and had his leg amputated 15 cm above the knee. While in hospital, he was so overcome by the suffering of other cancer patients that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He called his journey the Marathon of Hope. The run began in 1980 with the goal of informing Canadians of the importance of finding a cure for the disease. “With fierce determination, he ran an average of 42 kilometres (26 miles) every day for 143 days. Terry was forced to end his run on Sept. 1, 1980 when the cancer spread to his lungs,” says the Terry Fox Foundation’s website. “By Febru-

ary 1, 1981, Terry’s dream of raising $1 for every Canadian was realized – the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope fund totaled $24.17 million. Terry died in June 1981.” The Terry Fox Foundation’s mission is to maintain the vision and principles of Terry Fox while raising money for cancer research through the annual Terry Fox Run, Terry Fox School Run, as well as via memoriam donations and planned giving. “Everyone is welcome to participate in a Terry Fox Run, regardless of age, athletic ability or socio-economic standing. While the run does not have an entry fee or minimum donation we do ask all participants to fundraise or make a donation,” says the website. “You can raise funds online, use a pledge sheet or make a donation at the run site. Whatever your choice, please know that every dollar counts.” And while it’s held every year, the event continues to evolve. Renfrew’s organizers are seeking out replacements to run the event. In Arnprior, a youth co-organizer is helping lead the charge. To all those heading out this Sunday, we believe in you, thanks for all you do, and remember, in the words of Terry Fox himself: “Anything’s possible if you try.”

Mailing a letter made easier Support Arnprior’s 37th annual Terry Fox Run Sept. 17 To the editor:

To the editor:

Sunday, Sept. 17 will mark the 37th annual Terry Fox Run at the same location, the Arnprior Fairgrounds. It is not just a run, it’s also a walk, or bike ride or whatever you want to make it. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. After Terry lost his leg to cancer, he discovered that funding for cancer research in Canada was very minimal. The motivation of his Marathon of Hope was to raise funds to help find a cure for cancer. The Terry Fox Foundation remains true to Terry’s wishes today by directing all funds raised in his name to cancer research. The Terry Fox Foundation

funds research into many types of cancer. Since 1980, The Terry Fox Foundation (TFF) has raised more than $900 million for cancer research. The Terry Fox Foundation has been able to direct 84 cents (three-year average) of every dollar raised to research and boasts one of the lowest administration costs of any charity in Canada. Through the Terry Fox Research Institute, TFF has scientists and doctors in Canada and around the world working together to outrun cancer. Some may remember my letter to the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide editor on July 6, regarding the location of the letter box at the Arnprior post office and the access issues for seniors and the frail. The letter box is located up a set of stairs and not on the curb where one would expect it. Frustrated at the letter box placement, I first sent a complaint notice to Canada Post asking them to move the letter box to the curb, a simple fix one would think. A few days later a spokesperson called saying no can do. Next I wrote to Canada

Post CEO, Mr. Deepak Chopra who had Doug Ettinger, chief communication officer, reply thanking me for writing. However, the Arnprior mail box location met the corporate guidelines, so no can do, he said. Next I wrote to Cheryl Gallant, MP Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, asking for her assistance in correcting this wrong. I am pleased to report Canada Post has relocated the letter box from the top of the stairs to the curb. Kudos for their action. Next I must thank Cheryl Gallant for her intervention on this matter and her thoughtful towards seniors and the infirmed.

Christina Brown is ready to welcome students to St. John XXIII on the first day of school. It was her first day as principal at the school, as was true at four of the Arnprior area’s five primary schools. Lisa Murphy is the new principal at A.J. Charbonneau. Steve Griffiths is at McNab; and Derek Lennox at St. Joseph’s. Only Peter Burnette is a veteran; he started last year at Walter Zadow. Principals are often moved after five years or so, just to provide fresh perspectives.

A hemp farm that sells seeds throughout the Ottawa Valley and beyond held a clinic and demo day on Sept. 5. Reuben and Keanan Stone own ValleyBio, a cutting-edge research and working farm just west of Cobden. They

opened their gate to a couple of dozen curious farmers, industry representatives and media. “We thought it was important to show how far we’ve come in developing our business for the benefit of our supporters and other businesses in the region,” Keanan said. “Our research plots (rows of various mostly cereal crops)

are new this year. No one else is doing that work.” The couple actually owns three businesses, including a traditional farm near their home closer to Cobden, and a seed selling business called Uniseeds Incorporated. Hemp is still closely aligned with marijuana in many people’s mind. They don’t realize that industrial hemp, which is what the Stones grow, has a variety of uses and potentials. Automaker Henry Ford even predicted a car built and

fuelled by hemp. “He wasn’t lying,” Keanan said, noting that its potential is being realized in car parts, lubricants, and even building insulation. Hemp is considered among the “super foods” hence its oil and seeds are popular at health food stores. It is considered a durable textile for clothing, handbags

and more. The Stones see a clear future for hemp, which is why they are early onto its production and development in the region. But they are also experimenting with other plants, including sugar beets and hybrid turnips. Their experiments reveal how well seeds deal with the area’s unique soil mixture; and how plants fend off viruses and bugs. Agriculture is always in flux. Just as one pesticide seems to work, nature adapts to find a way around it. New solutions are constantly in the works. However, they need experimental plots like the Stones offer to complete the research and develop new product lines.

10th annual Wellness and Craft Show Sept. 16 KOULA COVE

For the past 10 years, Healing in the Valley has been organizing wellness and craft shows to help smaller businesses get exposure sharing what they are passionate about. At the same time, we have been supporting local food banks at our events because we feel it is a vital community service, where the need continues to grow on a daily basis. These are tough times that many find themselves in and as a community, we need to help each other in any way we can. Healing in the Valley is

thrilled to be back for our event on Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Nick Smith Centre. The event will run from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. in the Community Hall. We are asking visitors and vendors to please consider bringing a couple of non-perishable items for donation. We will have a silent auction running all day (closing at 3 p.m.) and all proceeds from it will be donated to the Arnprior and District Food Bank! We have an amazing variety of vendors this year – over 30 vendors with about half of them being new to our event. We are excited to

be sharing this day with you. As visitors to the event, you’ll be in for a treat with vendors showcasing fashion, household décor, soaps and bath products, health and wellness products and services, mind and body services, candles, jewellery, herbalism, kitchen essentials, delicious food creations,

photos to spruce up your home and so much more! We invite you to get out of the house and have some fun for the day – while helping to support a vital community service at the same time. It’s the perfect opportunity to find that unique gift for that special someone in your

life, start your Christmas shopping – or to simply pamper yourself, just because you work hard and deserve it! Grab a few friends and come by, we look forward to seeing you there. For more information, please feel free to contact Koula Cove at koula@healinginthevalley.ca .

The ball diamond in White Lake is the place to be on Sunday, Sept. 17 as a number of area musicians are volunteering their time to raise some money to help a young girl and her best friend – her dog Charlie. Recently Charlie had his leg badly broken when he ran into the spokes of a bicycle while going on a run with his owner.

Concert to help girl’s dog How would you like to spend an afternoon lounging in a lawn-chair enjoying some great Ottawa Valley music, while helping a local family in a time of need? Well, if this interests you then the ball diamond in White Lake is the place to be on Sunday, Sept. 17 as a number of area musicians are volunteering their time to raise some money to help a young girl and her best friend — her dog Charlie. Recently, Charlie had his leg badly broken when he ran into the spokes of a bicycle while going on a run with his owner. The vet bills are extremely high, but when faced with the alternative choice — one that makes all dog owners shudder at the thought — the family was determined to find a way to come up with the money to save Charlie. The community stepped up with donations for the initial vet visits and fees, but the surgery is expensive. So, when neighbour Jason Marshall heard from some musician friends who wanted to help, he quickly organized what is being called “A Doggone Good Afternoon of

Music” at the White Lake Ball Park. He says it’s a dog-friendly event, so people are encouraged to bring their dogs (on leash) for the afternoon. Cost of admission is simply a donation, and there will be a dog groomer on hand to do nail trims for a donation, as well as a pet photographer to capture pictures of you and your pooch, also for a donation. “As a dog person, I know the heartbreak you feel when your pooch gets hurt. And I also know how expensive it can be. So, I’m simply doing what people of the Ottawa Valley have always done — helping a neighbour in need,” says Marshall. “So many people want to help, it’s overwhelming. I hope people come out and enjoy a fun day at the park.” The musical lineup includes The Kyle Felhaver Band, Dan Paul Rogers, Johnny Spinks & Friends, Vicki Brittle and Chris McNally, Bill Connelly, Bobby Schwartz, and Andy T. Williams. Marshall will MC the event, which runs from 1 to 5 p.m. For more information, text or call Jason at 613-401-0518.

This is the year to curl at the Arnprior Curling Club Burnstown

Rowing Club hosts regatta

ARNPRIOR CURLING CLUB

Celebrating 150 years of sporting in Arnprior, the 20172018 season is the year to try/start/return to curling. The Arnprior Curling Club (ACC) has a full year of games, bonspiels, and parties that will appeal to all ages and levels of ability. This little-known piece of Arnprior’s heritage started in January of 1868 when the newly incorporated ACC opened its first covered sheet of ice on Victoria Street (formerly the site of the River of Life Church). Some of the original members included David Craig, John S. Moir, Arthur Burwash, E. C. Armand, Patrick Galvin, and I. MacNamara. This single sheet facility was replaced by a three sheet rink on Elgin Street (Napa Auto Parts mall), largely through sponsorship from Sullivans, Kenwood Mills and other local industries. Artificial ice was installed in the early 50s. In 1969, in celebration of its centenary, the ACC opened the current four-sheet rink on Galvin Street. This year everyone throughout Arnprior and neighbouring communities will have an opportunity to enjoy this rich sporting and social heritage passed down to us from previous generations. Your first opportunity is to join us for the 2017 season Registration night is from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21, in the downstairs lounge, 15 Galvin St. near Missy’s Fries. Wings, $2 beer and lots of laughs will be on offer. Check our web page at www.arnprior.ovca.com or our Facebook page for details.

The Burnstown Rowing Club, headquartered at the Burnstown Beach, is gearing up for its annual recreational regatta, the Head of the Madawaska. The 2017 regatta takes place on Sunday, Sept. 17 with three recorded head races — 3 km, 5 km, and 3 km — as well as a fun sprint. Rowers from across Eastern Ontario take part in this popular regatta. Come out and cheer on the area’s own rowers as they compete for the best times! Races will get underway around 9 a.m.

Warden’s Cup golf tournament a fundraising success

Golf

Getting you back on the greens

COUNTY OF RENFREW

On Sept. 8, a sunny and cool day, 78 enthusiastic golfers set out to drive home the importance of giving back. The 13th Annual Warden’s Cup Invitational Golf Tournament was hosted this year by County of Renfrew Warden Jennifer Murphy at the beautiful Whitetail Golf Club in Bonnechere Valley Township. The best-ball-format shotgunstart tournament saw teams from across the county and beyond turn out for 18 holes of golf, dinner, and prizes, all in support of the Renfrew Victoria Hospital oncology unit. “I want to take an opportunity to thank each participant and every sponsor for their generosity and support with making the 13th annual tournament such a success. I also congratulate the winning team for a match well played; that being said, the Renfrew Victoria Hospital oncology unit and the recipients of their expert care are the real winners today. Fundraising events like this tournament are a real testament to the giving nature of our residents,” said Murphy. Murphy presented Randy Penney from the Renfrew Victoria Hospital a cheque in the amount of $3,700. The donation was made up from funds raised at the tournament and staff denim days held earlier in the year at County of Renfrew offices. Later in the day, during the presentations, event MC Bruce Beakley, director of human resources at the County of Renfrew, announced the winning team. The happy winners — Stewart Melanson, Andrew Hamilton, Kevin Atwater, and Gary Pultz — posed for a picture with their trophy and prizes in front of an applauding crowd in the clubhouse.

Weather doesn’t dampen enthusiasm of MC golfers

Despite a very wet course, no thanks to a drenching storm the night before, the stalwart Senior Intersectional Mountain Creek Men’s team won their 2017 Division J against Amberwood, Lombard Glen and Whitetail on Sept. 5. Seven of the team each took six points, a very remarkable accomplishment. Wet feet did not impede the volunteer efforts of Peter Venasse, Jeff Needham, John Gelowsky, Dave Blackburn and Chris Dziekan who helped ensure a successful tournament. CLARE HAMILTON September 13, 2012

Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us every day, Unseen, unheard but always near, Still loved, still missed, and forever dear.

Remembrance is a golden chain, Death tries to break but all in vain; To have, to love and then to part, Is the greatest sorrow of one’s heart. Time may wipe out many things, But this they wipe out never The memory of those happy days, When we were all together.

CLARE HAMILTON September 13, 2012 A gentle wind blew across the land, Reaching out to take a hard, Take a hand. For on the winds, the angels came, Calling out a Mother’s name. Left behind, the children’s tears, Loving memories of the year’s. Of joy and love, a life well spent, And now to God, a mother’s sent. On Angels wings, a heavenly flight, the journey home, towards the light. To those who weep, a life is gone. But in God’s love, its but the dawn. Trevor, Andrew, Chris and Families

COADY, Sean Douglas In loving memory of our dear son, who tragically was taken too soon, September 16, 2006. Every day our hearts are filled with sorrow, Wondering how we will make it through tomorrow. Our time with you was precious, And the memories we have are too. The love we share together keeps us close to you. Maybe we cannot touch your hand or see your smiling face, Maybe we cannot hear your voice or feel your warm embrace, But, there is something we will always have, Tucked safely in our hearts, Our love for you… your love for us… will never let us part. “Those we love stay with us always, locked in our hearts as long as our life remains.” Love, Mom and Dad

COADY, Sean Douglas Remembering my fun and loving brother… my best friend… who left this earth, much too soon, September 16, 2006. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of you and wish for one more laugh, one more hug. Time passes… the grief remains, but I know that you would say… Keep my memory with you, For memories never die. I will always be there with you, When you look up in the sky. When your heart is heavy And you feel you are alone, Reach deep down inside yourself For your heart is now my home. I will always be there with you I will never go away I will live on within your heart Each and every day. “In my mind I see you and in my heart I keep you…” Love, Erin

For every animal we see, there are myriad ones that go unnoticed. Some of these are missed because they are tiny, so small that magnification is needed to ascertain whether they are bits of debris or miniature insects. Others reside under the bark of trees, invisible to our eye but detected by the tongues of woodpeckers. And still others inhabit the hidden worlds of water and soil. There are parasites that live in or on other animals. Some such as leeches and ticks live on the outside, taking small amounts of blood without having deleterious effects on their hosts. Roundworms and tapeworms live in the digestive tracts of their hosts. These internal parasites (endoparasites) also live out their lives seldom causing harm to their gigantic hosts. Recently, in Algonquin Park, I encountered an Eastern chipmunk with a parasite in its body. While I couldn’t actually see the parasite, I knew where and what it was by its host’s appearance. The chipmunk had a large bulge with a central hole on the left side of its neck. The parasite was the parasitic fly grub Cuterebra emasculator, the emasculating bot fly. Cuterebra is a fascinating fly but not just because it lives

under the skin of its host, eating its flesh without apparently inflicting excessive discomfort or other detrimental effects. To me, how it gets there is the most remarkable aspect of its story. Only the grub (larva) lives as a parasite. The adult flies do not have developed mouthparts and thus do not eat. Their sole purpose is to reproduce. After mating, the adult female fly deposits her eggs on the forest floor where Eastern chipmunks roam. When a chipmunk passes over an egg, it behaves like a little heat-activated landmine. The warmth causes it to quickly hatch, and the tiny larva immediately grabs onto the unsuspecting host and moves around until it eventually reaches the nose or mouth. Once inside the

chipmunk, the grub burrows under the skin to the belly region where it punctures the skin to create a breathing hole. Here it lives off its host, through time developing into a huge subcutaneous parasite that eventually exits through the breathing hole when it is ready to pupate in the soil. There are other species of Cuterebra that live inside mice and other rodents. People conducting research on small mammals have reported catching in live traps chipmunks and mice that had been parasitized by Cuterebra in previous years, which means that the unsightly hole somehow did not get infected and the host survived its ordeal. And despite its name, the emasculating bot fly does not appear to emasculate its host, and apparently does not differentiate between male and female chipmunks. It may not be a pretty sight to see a chipmunk with a Cuterebra bulging out of its belly. But we should never judge an animal on the basis of its appearance or lifestyle. Like its host, the Cuterebra grub is simply eking out a living. It may not be the most savoury way of doing just that, but it certainly is a fascinating one! Email: mruntz@start.ca

HOME, GARDEN & RENOVATIONS

Home improvement projects for your fall to-do list Homeowners know that maintaining a home can be a year-round job. No home is immune to wear and tear, and homeowners who want to protect their real estate investments should try to stay two steps ahead to ensure their homes do not succumb to the elements or become outdated and unappealing to prospective buyers. Fall has become a season that’s synonymous with home improvement, but homeowners need not wait until the leaves begin changing colors to start planning their next projects. The following are a few items homeowners can add to their fall home improvement to-do lists.

until late fall, those whose homes are surrounded by trees may need to schedule two such projects. Gutters clogged with leaves and other debris can cause serious roof damage, and that damage can extend all the way inside a home. In addition, clogged gutters make great nesting areas for insects or critters. Always stand on a ladder when cleaning gutters, wearing gloves to remove items by hand and dropping leaves and debris into a trash can below. Standing on the roof and leaning over gutters greatly increases your risk of injury. If the gutters are clear when you first examine them in early fall, you can wait until later in the season to ROOF INSPECTION give them a complete and thorough GUTTER CLEANING Less precipitation tends to fall cleaning. during the warmer months than durWhile some homeowners prefer to Once you have finished cleardelay their gutter cleaning projects ing the gutters, you can use a hose ing the late fall and winter. As a result, homeowners may not be aware of leaky roofs until autumn has come and gone. But waiting until winter to inspect the roof can prove disastrous, as weather conditions will not be conducive to inspection and increased precipitation may result in potentially costly damage. Leaky roofs can be easily identified by looking for water stains on interior ceilings. Once you see a stain, you can climb onto the roof to identify the location of the leak and fix it before winter rains and snowfall turn the problem into something much larger. Inspect your ceilings for signs of leaking after a strong rainfall, and then address any leaks immediately.

to run water through them and the Choose a windy autumn day to downspouts to confirm everything is place a hand by windows and external doorways in your home to see if functioning properly. you can feel drafts. If you can, seal WINDOW AND DOORWAY these cracks as soon as possible. INSPECTION

Before temperatures start dropping once again, homeowners will want to inspect their windows and doorways for leaks. Over time, cracks can develop around windows and doorways, and while such cracks are rarely noticeable when the weather outside is warm, they can be quite obvious and very costly if they remain unsealed come the start of winter. Cold air can enter a home through cracks around windows and doorways, and many homeowners who don’t suspect leaks may respond by turning up the thermostats in their homes. That can prove quite expensive over a full winter.

PATIO CLEANUP

Patios are popular hangouts during spring and summer, and that can result in a lot of wear and tear. Once you store patio furniture for the winter, inspect your entire patio to determine if it needs any refurbishing. While certain patio projects may be best left for spring, you can still clean any stained areas around the grill and look for cracks in the sidewalk that need to be addressed. Preparing for fall home improvement projects ahead of time can help homeowners complete projects in a timely manner and ensures they won’t be forced to brave the winter elements when refurbishing their homes.

HOME, GARDEN & RENOVATIONS Fall lawn care tips to follow Spring and summer may be the seasons most often associated with landscaping and lawn care, but tending to lawns and gardens is a yearround job. If lawn and garden responsibilities dip considerably in winter, then fall is the last significant chance before the new year that homeowners will have to address the landscaping around their homes. Fall lawn care differs from spring and summer lawn care, even if the warm temperatures of summer linger into autumn. Homeowners who want their lawns to thrive year-round can take advantage of the welcoming weather of fall to address any existing or potential issues. • Keep mowing, but adjust how you mow. It’s important that homeowners continue to mow their lawns so long as grass is growing. But as fall transitions into winter, lower the blades so the grass is cut shorter while remaining mindful that no blade of grass should ever be trimmed by more than one-third. Lowering the blades will allow more sunlight to reach the grass in the months ahead. • Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall.

Award-winning corn

Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn of sunlight and oxygen. The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees. • Repair bald spots. Summer exacts a toll on lawns in various ways, and even homeowners with green thumbs may end up with a lawn filled with bald spots come September. Autumn is a great time to repair these bald spots. Lawn repair mixes like Scotts® PatchMaster contain mulch, seed and fertilizer to repair bald spots, which can begin to recover in as little as seven days. Before applying such products, remove dead grass and loosen the top few inches of soil. Follow any additional manufacturer instructions as well.

"I Love My Kitchen!"

Your guide to proper tree pruning day’s Homeowner, larger limbs may require three cuts instead of one. The first cut is a small notch in the bottom of the limb, around two to three feet from the trunk and about one-quarter of the way through. This helps prevent the bark from splitting. A relief cut is then made a few inches away from the notch cut, and goes all the way through. This removes the weight of the branch so that the final cut can be made without the branch splitting and falling. The final cut is made right where the limb extrudes from the branch collar, or the swollen bump that then forms into the tree limb. Follow the slant of the branch collar when making the cut. Smaller or thinner branches may not require the same three steps, but every effort should be made to reduce injury to the tree. When deciding how much to prune, less is usually more. All pruning can put some level of stress on the tree and increase its vulnerability to disease and insect infestation. A good rule of thumb is to never prune more than 25 percent of the crown. According to experts at TreeHelp. com, living branches should comprise at least two-thirds the height of the tree. In some instances, the rules may need to be bent if trees are interfering with utility lines or to meet community laws. Consider hiring a professional tree service if pruning proves beyond your capabilities. Doing so is safe and often well worth the investment.

Trees may require pruning for a variety reasons. Storms may have damaged branches, necessitating a pruning. In other instances, trees may have outgrown their yards, overpowering the landscape. Autumn and winter, when trees largely go dormant and fallen leaves make it easier to see the branches beneath, may be prime times to prune. Pruning during the dormant period also minimizes sap loss and stress to the tree, and can help cut down on the growth of fungi. In addition, insects are less likely to be problematic during the colder months of the year. Trimming and pruning can be handled by do-it-yourselfers if the branches are smaller and more manageable. Practice on thinner branches before moving on to thicker ones, which may require extra help. Branches may be heavy, and it takes a guided hand to ensure the branches fall in a safe manner so they do not cause damage or injury. Branches also need to be trimmed properly to facilitate good healing. Trees will form a callus bark covering over cuts to keep out disease and decay, much as a scab forms over a person’s wound. Damaging the bark on a tree while pruning may interfere with that process, so doit-yourselfers need to take the time to prune correctly. Even burnt toast wasn’t wasted in the Depression years MARY COOK Memories

Father was happy. It had been a good season, unlike most other years, and he was sure he was going to get a second cutting of hay. That meant the mow would be full, and he could be sure of lots of hay to see us through the winter. But it also meant he would be working alone, as my three brothers would all be back to school. Of course, there were still Saturdays, but during the week, Father would be out cutting hay, raking and stooking on his own, leaving the house long before any of us were awake. But the brothers were expected to do all the morning chores before they went off to school, that is, except for the milking, which was a chore my sister Audrey and my mother had to take over. All of this meant of course, that our whole routine changed in the mornings, all because Father was getting a second cut of hay. And it didn’t mean, that even though I was so much younger, I’d get off scot free from the busy start to the day. School lunches

had to be made the night before, but as soon as my feet hit the floor in the morning, I was expected to get breakfast on the table. Of course, it would have been set out before I went to bed. Father would be long gone, so I didn’t have to worry about frying a pan of potatoes and salt pork. But I did have to make the porridge, and make sure the bread was sliced and ready to be put on the toaster rack that would sit on top of the stove where I would have removed one of the lids, allowing the bread to brown over the hot coals. As soon as everyone came in from the barn, I had to fly into action. The brothers changed their clothes, Mother and Audrey washed up, and I put four slices of bread on the toaster rack, and started to ladle out the porridge. A pot of eggs would be simmering on the back of the Findlay Oval, and I had placed an egg cup in front of each place. Everything was in order. Well, it didn’t take long for Emerson to complain. The porridge was like glue, there wasn’t enough cream in the pitcher, and where was the brown sugar? I ran to the ice box and refilled the

pitcher, grabbed the brown sugar bowl out of the cupboard, and told him he could either eat the porridge or give it to Sport our old Collie dog waiting outside the summer kitchen for any scraps from the breakfast table. Well, that’s when all hell broke loose. I could smell the burning toast before I saw it. I ran to the stove, and saw the bread, white as the driven snow on the outside, and burnt to a crisp on the inside. Emerson got into a fit of laughing, because the rule in our house was that whoever burnt the toast had to eat it, as Mother continually reminded us of the starving Armenians. Emerson just about fell of his chair, reminding me about the rule of burning the toast, laughing his head off! Mother grabbed the toast, took a knife, and scraped the burnt side furiously, slapped two pieces in front of Emerson, and told him to eat up or he’d be late for school. He knew better than to argue. Mother cracked an egg, dipped her burnt toast in the yolk, and spread jam on the other piece and ate up like eating burnt toast was an every day occurrence. The smell of burnt toast hung in

the kitchen as we gathered our book bags and headed out the door for school. Mother’s parting words were for Emerson. “Not one word about the burnt toast or you just might be having some for your supper tonight.” Audrey looked at Emerson with slit eyes, a warning that he better take heed, as she would be reporting back to Mother. When we got home from school, everything was in order. The smell of burnt toast was replaced with the aromas coming from the oven. Supper was ready, Father was washed up, but still showed signs of his long day in the hay field, with bits and pieces stuck in his hair. Not a word was said about the burnt toast, but when Mother’s back was turned, Emerson pretended he could smell it, turning his nose in the air, and sniffing, and then making the worst face, crossed his eyes, put a hand around his neck, and let his tongue hand out, as if he was going to choke to death. Mother, who we all said had eyes in the back of her head, walked to his chair, and cuffed him on the ear, a smack that could be heard in Douglas.

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
