SIU investigates fatal downtown crash TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

There was tragedy on the roads in Arnprior on Monday afternoon, resulting in one person dead and a second in serious condition. On Sept. 25 at 8:01 p.m. the Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) released the following post via Twitter: “SIU is now investigating a multi vehicle collision in Arnprior. 1 person is dead, 1 is in serious condition. Spokesperson en route.” Daniel Street remained closed late into the evening with one vehicle covered with a tarp and a truck with significant damage. According to an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) release at 8:17 p.m., officers of the Renfrew detachment were notified of a driving complaint involving a stolen vehicle at 3:20 p.m. “The same vehicle was later involved in a fail to remain collision in Renfrew,” said the release. “Responding OPP officers observed the suspect vehicle on Highway 17 traveling eastbound in the area of Calabogie Road. Shortly after, the suspect vehicle was involved in another collision on Daniel Street in Arnprior. The 20-year-old male suspect from Eganville was apprehended and arrested at the scene. The SIU believes there were a number of witnesses to the incident and urges anyone who may have witnessed it to contact the lead investigator at: 1-800-787-8529. “We are looking for witnesses that basically saw any part of what happened, whether it was on the highway, the crash; just anyone who may have information about the entire chain of events,” said Monica Hudon, SIU spokesperson. “The more information the SIU has from witnesses the better we are able to piece together what happened.” See WITNESSES, page 5

Daniel Street collision victim’s children in disbelief DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

The children of the woman killed on Daniel Street in Arnprior on Monday, Sept. 25 were in utter disbelief the next day. Sheila Welsh was pulling out of her driveway to pick up her niece and nephew at school when her car was crushed by a pickup truck. The grandmother of five died soon after. Her children, Sarah WelshButterly and Jason Welsh, said they keep playing the scenario over and over in their minds. If only she pulled out 10 seconds beforehand or 30 seconds later. “I’m still in shock,” Jason said. “You replay it in your mind.”

Sarah said she feels completely sad and shocked. Her mother knew many people in town, even though she arrived under three years ago. She had numerous connections with Metroland Media, and was constantly having lunch with friends in Pembroke, Perth, Ottawa and points between. Sarah said her mom made friends easily and was known to be kind, caring, funny, and loyal. “She would do anything for her grandkids,” Sarah said. “She’d drive people to doctor’s appointments in Ottawa. She was a very caring woman; a heart of gold.” Her favourite hobby was taking photos of her grandchildren,

she said. The family lived 35 years west of Renfrew, in the village of Douglas. Sheila, who grew up a Lyons, graduated from Renfrew Collegiate Institute. She worked at Renfrew No Frills, the Stewart Hartshorn plant before that. She and husband Bob moved to Arnprior to be closer to their grandchildren. However, in March, after a spell of ill health, Bob died of a heart attack. “It was a shock, but not nearly as much as this,” Jason said, adding that she was planning a trip to Florida to help get over her grief. It would be her first plane flight. He can’t understand how the driver, whose name was yet to

be released at the time, could allegedly steal a truck in Eganville and wind up in town. “How did it get that far, to downtown Arnprior and hit my mother,” Jason said. “I know everyone is doing their job to figure out what happened. But why did this guy go on a rampage? I’m really mad about it.” Sarah agrees, saying she feels frustrated by the situation. However, both are grateful for the many messages and phone calls pouring in. They’ve even heard from complete strangers. “People that didn’t even know her. They’re just shocked and upset, and she’s not even from here,” Jason said. “We really feel the love and support.”

McNab/Braeside approves spending on new buildings DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Council members at a recent township of McNab/Braeside meeting voted to replace most of the municipality’s aging buildings, at a price to ratepayers. About $13.3 million will be put toward a township hall, community centres, a central banquet hall, and others. It does not include furnishings. Over the coming decade it will cost each ratepayer about $315, or an additional $35 per year. That is in addition to the expected three per cent annual hike to cover inflation and many other costs. Much of it will be debt-financed, requiring interest payments to banks.

The township hall is the most expensive new-build, coming in at about $3.2 million. There was little discussion or disagreement on the issue, at either the Sept. 18 planning advisory committee meeting or the Sept. 19 council meeting. Only Deputy-Mayor Brian Armsden missed the meetings, for family reasons. The current township offices, near the intersection of Highway 17 and Calabogie Road, are not accessible and has had leaks and mould issues. (The provincial government has mandated all public buildings be accessible over the next few years.) The new, larger building - which anticipates another 10 staff members – will be built next to the Perneel Building on Russett Drive.

Much more discussion was held over the Perneel Building. Council had staff crunch the numbers for and against converting it into a banquet hall for 200, complete with a full kitchen and numerous washrooms. The other option was a hard shell building for recreational activities such as tennis and basketball. In the end, all voted for the banquet hall at about $1.4 million. The other option would have cost about $700,000 less. It would have been too costly to later on upgrade the hard shell to a banquet hall, staff advised. Council was under some pressure to make the decision or risk losing out on a $150,000 provincial grant. With the decision, construction should make next March’s deadline.

Developing the Perneel and hall site will cost another $1.2 million. Coun. Mark MacKenzie, who led most of the discussions, based his decision on a move earlier in the year to build a relatively expensive recreation activity (RA) centre in Braeside. That community will see a $2.2 million building and, in 2020, a new outdoor rink. MacKenzie doubts White Lake, about 40 minutes away with a similar sized population, will see a new recreation centre anytime soon. “Realistically, I don’t see a $2.2 million community centre in White Lake. I know it’s on the list (for 2026) and voted for it, but it’s not realistically going to happen,” he said. “I’m trying to be as balanced as possible. If the Braeside RA Centre is the only one,

that will be too unbalanced.” Along with the Braeside RA Centre, a new salt and sand shed was built there at about $1.1 million. The old Braeside municipal office will come down for about $82,000. The current township offices will be demolished for $52,000. McNab Centre Park renovation and replacement will cost $272,000 in 2019. The fire station expansion on Russett Drive will cost $580,000 the next year. The Glasgow garage expansion and replacement will cost $853,000 in 2021. Past township councils have not kept up with building repairs and replacements. Nor did they save to replace them. The provincial government has now mandated that municipal governments do so.

The first fire was put out and at 6:50 p.m., it reignited. Paramedics and ORNGE air-ambulance was called in and the male was transported to hospital. He remains in hospital and the investigation is ongoing.

Sheila Welsh was killed Sept. 25 on Daniel Street at Edey Street when a suspect in an allegedly truck vehicle caused a multi-vehicle collision.

Witnesses urged to contact SIU From front page

They are also asking anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload it to the SIU website: www.siu.on.ca . Hudon also says the witness reports could range from information regarding the reported vehicle theft, to the collision, and anything in between. In a press release from the SIU issued at 1:53 p.m. on Sept. 26 it confirmed where the incident started “In the early afternoon hours of September 25, the OPP was notified of a vehicle theft in the community of Eganville. The 20-year-old driver of the vehicle made his way to Arnprior, traveling on Highway 60 and then on Highway 17. At some point, OPP officers began to follow the vehicle.” In an OPP release issued on Sept. 25 at 8:17 p.m., officials say police from the Renfrew detachment were notified of a driving complaint involving a stolen vehicle. The same vehicle was later involved in a fail-to-remain collision in Renfrew. The OPP notified the SIU, which has now invoked its mandate and as a result the OPP is un-

able to provide any further information. In a press release issued by the SIU at 3:47 a.m. Sept. 26, the incident is described as follows: “Sometime after 4 p.m., a vehicle was travelling northeast along Daniel Street South in Arnprior. At Daniel Street South and Edey Street, the vehicle collided with two other vehicles. The driver of the vehicle travelling along Daniel Sreet South – a 20-year-old man – was rushed to hospital. The driver of one of the vehicles that was struck – a 65-year-old woman – was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision.” The third vehicle that was struck was unoccupied. “The injuries were not serious in nature for anyone else involved,” said Hudon. According to the OPP the male suspect was apprehended and arrested at the scene. From the SIU there are five investigators, two forensic investigators, and one collision reconstructionist who have been assigned to this incident. The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Mental health care crisis In any given year one in five individuals will experience a mental health problem or illness, says the Canadian Mental Health Association. It’s time we take a long hard look at mental health care in rural communities and come up with some concrete solutions to the growing problem of a lack of adequate care. As social work masters student Vanessa Cormier writes in her op-ed piece this week, Renfrew County, with its more than 100,000 people, has just two part-time psychiatrists and 10 mental health beds. The waitlist for mental health care can be six months to a year. And while individuals can access counselling services and other mental health programs through their family physicians, there are about 2,400 people across the county on the waitlist for access to a doctor. The Robbie Dean Counselling Centre confirms that barriers to accessing mental health care include a shortage of locally available mental health specialists. For many families, says the centre, accessing proper mental health care means taking time off work and expensive travel to larger centres.

Prevention and education, as Cormier writes, are key to improving the situation. There should be more government funding for preventative mental health care programs. Increased education will help end the stigma associated with reaching out for help and raise awareness so we’re better able to help those in need. And support and encouragement for those studying in the mental health care field, and possibly incentives for practicing in rural communities, could go a long way towards easing the burden. There are resources out there, including the Robbie Dean centre, which offers free, walk-in crisis clinics in various communities, including Renfrew and Arnprior. The Phoenix Centre for Children and Families is doing good work in our communities as well. If you are in a crisis and are aged 17 and under you can call the Crisis Line at 1-877-377-7775. If you or someone you know is experiencing serious mental health problems, call the 24-hour Mental Health Crisis Line: 1-866-996-0991 or the Ontario Mental Health Helpline: 1-866-5312600.

Child poverty a community issue To the editor:

Child poverty is not just about what is going on now but has lifelong effects on a person. The Renfrew County Child Poverty Action Network’s (CPAN) recent study regarding Arnprior having the highest rate of poverty in the county needs to be supported further. CPAN highlights the latest Statistics Canada 2011 report, showing 28.7 per cent of all Arnprior children under the age of 18 lived below the poverty line. As a social worker in the community every day I see the effects poverty is having on the community. We are limited in many resources that other larger areas have access to in regard to physical and mental health. In my position, I am limited in what I can do to support my clients and am constantly advocating for funding and support. Arnprior, as a community

has many organizations and groups such as Seniors at Home, and Renfrew County Mental Health, working to improve individual and collective poverty as well as mental health. Children are powerless to change their situation and it is up those of us in positions of advocacy, including parents, teachers, health professionals, and the community at large to continue raising our voices together. We need to work together more. In working together, we need to continue to think about the long-term effects of poverty not just the immediate needs. The Canadian Mental Health Association talks about the connection of poverty being a significant risk factor for poor physical and mental health. How can we expect these families to support children on Ontario Works payments that keep them well below the poverty line? Families are having to choose between food and

paying their very large hydro bills. How does this effect mental health? Poverty increases one’s stress, depression, and anxiety. Which then affects an individuals physical health with increased heart conditions, stomach concerns and weight loss or gain to name a few. Not to mention affecting a person’s self-esteem, and sense of self worth. Statistics Canada last reported the 2008 low income cut off for a family of four as $22, 274 for a rural area. How can we expect a family of four to possibly survive on a minimum wage of $11.40 per hour or working 37.5 hours a week making $427.50 before tax? Arnprior’s average two-bedroom home costs approximately $1000 a month in rent before utilities. Why are our children and families, who are trying to work through mental and physical health issues, only worth a monthly support of approximately

Again, people are at an increased risk when you add financial, housing, and employment barriers. Our community can not continue to jump in as a crisis system. It is not sustainable. My concern as a social worker in this community, is when are we going to start being more preventative in our work to assist poverty initiatives? We are responding primarily when people are in crisis. I work diligently with my colleagues to encourage clients to be advocates for their overall health before it’s a crisis. This is difficult when we have a system that is not build on prevention. I continue to witness firsthand the community rallying to support itself. are great in shedding statistical light on poverty. We need to continue questioning why Arnprior has a higher rate of housing units? Why does our community has limited employment opportunities? Why are businesses leaving our community? Why is there no mental health support access funded for all residents not just those with doctors as part of a Family Health Team? How long can our food bank support the growing population of people in need? Our voice in Renfrew County is an important one. We need to be advocating to our doctors, dentists, Ontario Works agencies, members of parliament to start questioning more funding for prevention. If we can support children and families earlier we will have less individuals with physical and mental health concerns as adults. People are worth more. Let’s continue seeking prevention before the crisis. Tina Carby, Social Worker, RSW Arnprior

Mental health access in Renfrew County: time for a change VANESSA CORMIER

It’s no surprise to many; mental health access in rural communities is a growing problem in Canada. However, when we take a moment to look at access to mental health services in our very own Renfrew County, something that is rarely discussed in the media, the numbers may shock you. Currently, Renfrew County, an area of over 100,000 people, has two part-time psychiatrists, 10 mental health beds and roughly 2,400 people on the waitlist for access to a primary care physician through Health Care Connect. The waitlist for community mental health continues to be stifling, often six months to a year to gain access to support groups, counselling, employment and peer support through their agency. According to a report by the Robbie Dean Centre, Renfrew County has some of the worst health statistics in the entire country and one of the highest numbers of low-income households in the province. This information leaves some wondering –what do I do if I need help? When it comes to other available counselling services and mental health programs in the area, the county as a whole is lacking. People can access free counselling services through their primary care physician if they have been able to access a doctor. For those who continue to wait, there are some private counselling options available. However, the cost for private counselling is not necessarily accessible to many who may lack employment or for those who are employed, many benefits cover only three sessions with a counselor. As a response to the growing need for services in the area, walk-in counselling clinics have been introduced by family health teams in the county over the past couple of years and have pro-

vided a gateway for clients to access counselling services. However, these walk-in clinics are available to patients of the clinics only. Currently, the Robbie Dean Centre offers the only free mental health walk-in east of Chalk River, for adults that do not have a diagnosed mental health condition. It’s important to note that there are transportation barriers in accessing the limited services available in the county. Currently there is no public transit system and community resources can be spread out. For those without a vehicle, local cab companies can be a cost which many cannot absorb. As a patient and a professional in the community, I have seen the strain on mental health services from both sides. Living in Petawawa for two-and-a-half years, I was fortunate enough to gain access to a doctor after two. Typically, many people must wait much longer than this. As a mental health professional, I have been challenged in supporting clients in accessing care due to the area’s limited services and the growing waitlists for existing services. So how can we find solutions the problem with few physicians and psychiatrists willing to relocate to rural areas and waitlists growing in size? Prevention and education. Increased government funding towards preventative mental health programs in Renfrew County can cut waitlist for longterm services, provide people with an accessible support network and arguably help curb chronic mental health conditions. We can build within our own community and add accessible prevention programs to cover the most dominant issues we are faced with as a population. In addition, increased funding to publicly available mental health services will help shrink current waitlists and provide more access to services when they are need-

MP Cheryl Gallant hosts tax info meeting Thursday night in Cobden As you are aware, the federal government has proposed significant changes to tax law, which may affect your ability to save for retirement, severely limit your ability to pass on operations to the next generation, and reverse many years of accepted tax planning. The current administration is planning to end three tax practices: 1. Income Sprinkling, which involves diverting income from a highincome individual to family members with lower personal tax rates; 2. Passive investments funded from after tax active business earnings; 3. Capital Gains conversion from a private corporation’s regular income for lower tax rates and limit access to the life time capital gain exemption. I would like to invite you to an information session on these tax changes, where tax experts will be on hand to explain how these changes will work, how they may affect you, and answer questions you may have. The event is taking place Thursday, Sept. 28 from 7:30-9 p.m. at the Cobden Agricultural Hall at 43 Astrolabe Lane in Cobden. Cheryl Gallant Member of Parliament Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke

ed past the prevention level. Providing means of transportation to these community prevention programs is crucial in addressing barriers to care and giving everyone access to these services. Education is also a key component to prevention. Education can address the stigma that comes from reaching out, as stigma is often more prevalent in small towns. Providing mental health education to the community would be a very important piece in encouraging others to reach out and access available services. With funding allotted to prevention and education programs the community could see decreased waitlists, reduced burnout for those in the helping role, a better sense of community inclusion and greater willingness for those struggling to reach out – knowing a hand will be there. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, in any given year 1 in 5 people will experience a mental health problem or illness. We are all affected by this in one way or another whether it is a friend family member or loved one. To spark change in our community I urge people in Renfrew County to write Cheryl Gallant our local Member of Parliament to advocate for increased mental health funding for our county. http://cherylgallant.com/contact/. ‘Fish on the Move’ Oct. 3 at Macnamara Field Naturalists Club MACNAMARA FIELD NATURALISTS

Most fishing stories are met with a wink and nod, but not those shared by Carleton University biologist Dr. Steven Cooke, called “one of the key thinkers in fish conservation and one of the most prolific and creative conservation scientists of his generation,” by the Natural Sciences and

Engineering Research Council of Canada. An individual who enjoys recreational fishing as well as an academic that studies fish, Cooke will be presenting “Fish on the Move” at the Oct. 3 meeting of the Macnamara Field Naturalists, open to the public. In his “Fishing for the Future” TEDex talk on recreational fishing, Cooke recounts how

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR THOSE ON THE MADAWASKA AND OTTAWA RIVERS

inheriting a tackle box from his grandfather at the age of seven sent him down a path of studying fish for a living. And the longer he spent studying fish, he realized the importance of studying people — engaging those with “skin in the game” to help solve conservation problems. The need to be relevant is a theme he reinforces with the new generation of conservation scientists he leads at Carleton’s Cooke Lab — the Fish Ecology and Conservation Physiology Laboratory (FECPL), fecpl.ca. A boat is often the “office” for his team in fisheries science and an operating room for such tasks as surgically implanting telemetry transmitters in smallmouth bass on Big Rideau Lake or tagging sockeye salmon on the Nasse River in British Columbia. Cooke focuses on inland fisheries, which are an important but largely overlooked resource, scientists say, noting that freshwater fishes are among the most threatened vertebrate worldwide yet they provide food and employment for millions. In Canada, more than eight billion dollars a year goes into the economy from recreational fishing. Significantly, we are “the only country in the world to have a long-standing survey of rec fishing at a national scale that has the depth/ resolution to drill down and ask more local questions,” says Cooke. And his team’s studies of solutions, like that of a naturelike fishway installed to aid upstream passage of fish at a low head dam on Indian Creek in Spencerville, Ont., provides promising models for replication around the globe. All are documented on the FECPL web-

site in CanFishPass, an electronic inventory of fish passage facilities in Canada. Responsible angling equals fish-friendly practices For many of us growing up in the Ottawa Valley, fishing in a lake or river was as common as skipping stones on the water’s surface. For those who continue the practice, fishing offers a way of relaxing and escaping in nature, the indulging of a passion and an exercise in patience and perseverance. With greater awareness of the need for conservation, comes the need for increased attention to fish-friendly practices backed up by scientific data. Catch-and-release angling is perhaps among the most successful and rewarding conservation partnerships, says Cooke, who is often interviewed about the best practices. “A key element is to enable recreational anglers to make educated real-time decisions related to angling practices, as well as when, where, and whether to release captured fish based on their probability of survival.” Responsibleangling.org is one source for the essentials on Northern pike, Arctic char, Black bass, trout, walleye and musky. Don’t miss “Fish on the Move.” When: Tuesday, Oct. 3, 7:30 p.m. Where: Arnprior Curling Club, 15 Galvin St., Arnprior Cost: Meetings (and presentations) are free for club members and $5 for guests. Guests are welcome at this and every meeting of the Macnamara Club. Find more information on the club and its activities at mfnc.ca.

NEW NAME. NEW FOOD. NEW LOOK.

After Thanksgiving, Monday, October 9, the summer water level minimums will end on the Ottawa and Madawaska Rivers. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) will adjust its operations within allowable operating levels using the fall/winter requirements. This will result in lower water levels. Also be advised that a “draw down” will occur in late October or early November on the Madawaska River at Calabogie Generating Station (GS) and Stewartville GS, and on the Ottawa River at Chenaux GS. This “draw down” from summer water level minimums will begin as temperatures drop in order to encourage amphibians like frogs, as well as turtles, to hibernate safely for the winter. This is an initiative supported by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. Residences and businesses along these rivers are advised to take all necessary precautions to ensure the lower water does not affect their properties. As always, exercise caution around OPG facilities. If you have any questions, please call Jennifer Gardiner 613-433-9673, ext. 3350.

Willis College names new veteran centre after Carleton Place resident TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com

Joan Bray has seen a lot of changes since she first enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War in 1943. On Sept. 22, she cut the ribbon for the Joan D. Bray Veteran Learning Centre at Willis College in Arnprior, a place where changing technology is helping new veterans. The new centre is home to the Veteran Friendly Transition Program (VFTP), developed by and for veterans, the program is currently offered by way of the Arnprior and Ottawa campuses of Willis College When the longtime Carleton Place resident spoke at the ceremony, she recalled her time as a medic at a Montreal hospital seeing injured soldiers with prosthetics and now they can run and compete at the Invictus Games. The ever-humble Gray thanked everyone and quoted the Bible, Mark 9:23: “Everything is possible.” She admitted she was not a very good speaker and was overwhelmed by the large crowd. “I wish Willis College all the best, I’ve been there in 1946 (serving in the Second World War) and now the technology is there and they (veterans) have the opportunity to go further,” said Bray. “It will be a wonderful for whoever comes into the Learning Centre.” In fact on Sept. 25, two veterans started at Willis College in the new VFTP as they have enrolled in the cyber technology course. The praised poured in for Bray as Arnprior campus manager Bernard Doyle said it was one of their most monumental endeavours Willis College has ever embarked on. “I can’t tell you how grateful I am to have Joan Bray here today … and I am not sure anything like this will ever happen again at Willis college,” said Willis College president and chief executive officer Rima Aristocrat. “I cannot be more thankful for you to allow us to name this centre after you, thank you so much for being here.” Carleton Place Deputy Mayor Jerry Flynn — Bray’s son-in-law, said he admired her longevity. “To have this honour bestowed on my mother-in-law, she is just so deserving,” said Flynn. “We are all very proud of Joan.” Arnprior Mayor David Reid called it an honour to name the new centre after Bray. “It’s a wonderful initiative by Willis College,” said Reid. “Thank you Joan and George Sparkes (who also has a Veteran Learning Centre named after him in Ottawa) for all your doing to bring awareness to this cause.” Renfrew — Nipissing — Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant noted it was fitting to hold the ceremony on Red Friday, which was started right in the

Ottawa Valley to support the troops. She compared the Invictus Games and Willis College saying they were both transformational in the lives of veterans. “Willis College took a shell of a building and made it a productive school and now they have started a transitional program for veterans,” said Gallant.

“This isn’t something they were told to do but because of their love for their country.” Creation of the Joan Bray Veteran Learning Centre started on June 19, and it took approximately two weeks. The 1,400-square-foot space encompasses two classrooms, a student lounge and an office. -with files from Tara Gesner

Growing Awareness to Save Lives OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH TAKE ACTION. FIGHT BREAST CANCER

WHAT IS BREAST CANCER?

Breast cancer is a malignant tumour that starts in the cells of the breast. Malignant means that it can spread, or metastasize, to other parts of the body. Cells in the breast sometimes change and no longer grow or behave normally. These changes may lead to benign breast conditions such as atypical hyperplasia and cysts. They can also lead to benign tumours such as intraductal papillomas. Benign conditions and tumours are not cancerous. But in some cases, changes to breast cells can cause breast cancer. Most often, breast cancer starts in cells that line the ducts, which are the tubes that carry milk from the glands to the nipple. This type of breast cancer is called ductal carcinoma. Cancer can also start in the cells of the lobules, which are the groups of glands that make milk. This type of cancer is called lobular carcinoma. Both ductal carcinoma and lobular carcinoma can be in situ, which means that the cancer is still where it started and has not grown into surrounding tissues. They can also be invasive, which means they have grown into surrounding tissues. Less common types of breast cancer can also develop. These include inflammatory breast cancer, Paget disease of the nipple and triple negative and basal-like breast cancers. Rare types of breast cancer include non-Hodgkin lymphoma and sarcoma.

BREAST SCREENING PROGRAMS

Screening means checking or testing for a disease in a group of people who don’t show any symptoms of the disease. Screening tests help find breast cancer before any symptoms develop. When breast cancer is found and treated early, the chances of successful treatment are better. Currently in Canada, screening for breast cancer is recommended for women of average risk between the ages of 50 and 69. Regular screening for breast cancer is recommended for this age group because about half of all new cases of breast cancer occur in women between 50 and 69 years of age. The most reliable way to find breast cancer early is screening mammography. Research has also shown that regular mammography can significantly lower the risk of women in this age group dying from breast cancer. Talk to your doctor about your personal risk of breast cancer and take advantage of screening tests or programs in your area.

EARLY DETECTION IS KEY

Every person should know the symptoms and signs of breast cancer, and any time an abnormality is discovered, it should be investigated by a healthcare professional. Most people who have breast cancer symptoms and signs will initially notice only one or two, and the presence of these symptoms and signs do not automatically mean that you have breast cancer. By performing monthly breast self-exams, you will be able to more easily identify any changes in your breast. Be sure to talk to your healthcare professional if you notice anything unusual.

Royal Mint selects Arnprior artist’s image for coin DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

A young Arnprior artist has an image he designed on a Canadian coin. The Royal Mint of Canada has selected a drawing by Graham Spaull, an illustrator and graphic designer, to appear on its $50 silver coin. Spaull’s pointillism design of a monarch butterfly was chosen from a selected shortlist of four candidates. “I was pretty blown away. It’s quite a feather in my cap,” said Spaull on a visit back to his hometown. “It was unbelievable news. I was basically in tears.” It is considered a big step forward for the Ottawa-based artist’s burgeoning career. Not only is the Mint’s selection lucrative for him, it also has a reputation for selecting the best and brightest in the country when it comes to the wildlife and landscape genre. Spaull’s website at illustrate.gspaull.com contains numerous photos of realistic insects, canines, small mammals and more. The White Lake-raised man is influenced by the natural world. He also does personal and corporate branding, anatomical illustration, caricatures, portraiture, digital and print graphic media. He graduated from Arnprior District High School in 2007, and honed his skills under the tutelage of well-known Arnprior artist Kevin Dodds. “I’ve spent a lot of time in there,” he said, standing outside Dodds’ studio on John Street North. “He helped me a lot.”

HOME, GARDEN & RENOVATIONS

Slightly smaller Ontario apple crop volume this year Ontario’s apple crop volume will be slightly lower this year compared to last, but the fruit will be larger, juicier, and more colourful. That’s what Ontario’s apple growers are seeing as they prepare to harvest the 2017 crop along the shores of Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. It’s the drought that struck many of the province’s apple growing regions in 2016 that is causing Ontario’s fresh market apple crop to be approximately 20 per cent less than last year. “Our trees suffered from extreme drought last year and they haven’t had a chance to recover,” says apple grower Charles Stevens, who farms near Newcastle, Ontario. “All the rain we’ve had this year, though will mean larger, juicier apples with great colour because cool weather creates colour. And we’ll have plenty of apples available throughout the season for Ontarians to enjoy.” Consumers may see some apples with small dents, which were caused by hail earlier in the summer, but those don’t take away from the flavour or the juiciness of the fruit. Some early varieties are already available and most growers will begin the bulk of their apple harvest in early

September, just in time for back to school. Stevens encourages Ontarians to keep an eye out for the Ambrosia apple this year, a relatively new variety that was discovered by chance by a Canadian apple grower who found it growing in his British Columbia orchard. It’s a large, juicy fruit that is ideal for eating fresh. “Ambrosia is the sweetest apple that we grow in Ontario and it’s truly Canadian, made by Mother Nature herself,” Stevens says. “As we celebrate Canada 150 this year, there’s not a better time to try this new, Canadian-born apple.” There are approximately 15 different varieties of apples grown on 15,000 acres in Ontario. The farm gate value of the Ontario apple crop is approximately $60 million, which includes sales to fresh and processing markets as well as onfarm/pick-your-own. The Ontario Apple Growers represents the province’s 200 commercial apple farmers. Visit www.onapples.com for recipe ideas and grower profiles, or follow Ontario Apple Growers on As part of #Canada150, be sure to try the newest made-in-Canada apple variety, AmTwitter and Instagram (@ontarioapples) and brosia. HOME, GARDEN & RENOVATIONS Fall in love with gall at a conservation area The fall season is arguably the best time of year to step into nature; cooler days, fewer bugs and spectacular scenery as the leaves change colour. The Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) offers three unique settings across the watershed where visitors can explore the very best of what Mother Nature has to offer.

“Whether you’re looking to hike, bird watch, hone your photography skills or simply sit on a bench and take in your surroundings, the Mill of Kintail, Purdon and Morris Island Conservation Areas provide countless opportunities to enjoy this time of year in the outdoors,” said MVCA community relations co-ordinator Shannon Gutoskie.

Fall doesn’t just involve colourful leaves, rainy days and Halloween candy; it’s also the time to close the pool, caulk windows, clean gutters and the list goes on. In fact, preparing for fall involves a great many jobs. Here are a few of them. • Put away deck furniture and the barbecue, unless it’s set up to be used year round. Drain and store garden hoses and turn off any outside taps. • Close the pool. Drain partially, so the water level is about 30.5 cm (one foot) below the skimmer basket. Disconnect and drain all the pipes and bleed the pump before storing it for the winter. • Clean gutters and make sure they drain properly. • Inspect the roof. Make sure skylights, roof shingles and seals on chimneys or vents are in good condition. Do any necessary repairs. • Have your chimney cleaned and your fireplace inspected to prevent fires. Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working well, and then change the batteries (they should be replaced every year). • Examine the foundations and the exterior siding, and fix any cracks to prevent water or air infiltration. • Check the slope of the ground and make any modifications to ensure that rainwater drains away from your home. Check the sump pump to avoid any unpleasant surprises during heavy rainfall or the spring melt. • Check your deck or balcony. Make sure railings and steps are safe, and replace rot-

ten or dama ged planks. Check if the deck is adequately lit and take advantage of the mild weather to replace bulbs in outdoor fixtures. • Inspect doors and windows. To keep cold and damp from entering the house, replace damaged seals and weather stripping. Take this opportunity to remove window air conditioners, if you have any. Remove bug screens to prevent condensation and maximize the amount of winter sunlight entering your home. • Check all air outlets (central vacuum, dryer, range hood, etc.) and make sure the vent covers close properly. • Clean the filters of your air exchanger and heating system. Vacuum inside any furnace registers. It would also be wise to verify that the heating system is working properly. In fact, fall is the perfect time to have it checked out by a professional. • Test your water if you have a well. This should be done every six months. • Clean the garage floor catch ba sin. If it connects with the house plumbing, make sure the automatic valve closes properly. Lastly, spring isn’t the only time of year to do a thorough cleanup; preparing your home for the winter also requires some cleaning chores. For example, it’s important to vacuum baseboard heaters and make sure furniture and curtains are well clear of them. Carpets, curtains and fabric-covered chairs should also be cleaned. This will greatly improve the air quality in your home during those long winter months when windows are never opened.

Pigskin Parade win

It was a beautiful day for some fall football in Arnprior on Friday, Sept. 22, as the annual Pigskin Parade made its way downtown. Kayla Dick, top right, holds up a sign in support of one of the Arnprior District High School football players. Right: Seth Malina, evades a tackle from a Renfrew Collegiate Institute player early in the first quarter, Malina went on to score the first touchdown for the Rapids who won the game 23-6. Arnprior’s next game is Sept. 29 against the St. John Catholic High School Spartans in Perth. The annual Turkey Bowl is set for Saturday, Oct. 7 in Arnprior against the Almonte District High School Thunderbolts, the juniors play at noon and the senior Rapids play at 2 p.m. at Oattes Field in Arnprior.

Sweet September at Mountain Creek Golf Course Plenty of action on the course during sunny month of September at Mountain Creek WENDY TESSIER

The season again is slowly coming to an end but with so many events on deck the golfers certainly aren’t winding down! The current good weather has seen them out in droves, the parking lot evidence that the course is full! It’s also in superb condition although the leaf blowers have to be used already and doesn’t it seem too soon? Mother Nature, while a wonderful painter, does like to litter. While the bunkers looked like ponds for awhile after earlier rains, they have dried out and are now acting as proper bunkers should: stubbornly sandy. The greens are slick and challenging. So what are you waiting for? Hurry on out to enjoy the best part of the golf season. Once again the annual Mountain Creek Mixed Glow Ball Tournament was sold out! A jolly group headed out after dinner on a dark cloud-covered Friday night Sept. 8 lit only by bonfires and glow sticks. A good time was had by all with no untoward accidents such as falling into the pond on 18. Prizes were awarded via draws. The Men’s League has a 2017 Mountain Creek Match Play Champion: Paul Petrie. Paul won the final match against Ed Kollesh, which went 34 holes with Paul winning three and two. Congratulations to both Ed and Paul for making it to the final. Honourable mention to Eric Irons and Denis Tessier who made it to the semi-finals, and thank you to all who competed. Congratulations are due as well to the team of Rick Sulpher, Jim Ackerman and Brody Flegal for winning the Three Man event held Sept. 9. They came in with a score of 117, one over par. Second place went to Donnie Watt, Bruce Headrick and Terry Raycraft with a 118. Third place went to Wayne Deschamps, Ed Kollesh and Jim Thompson with a 119. Worth mention on last Men’s Night were two birdies made on hole 10 by Stu Thompson and John Gelowsky. What makes this notable is that both were within a foot of the hole, one on the left side and one on the right. Those birdies were almost eagles! August’s Prize Night winners for the Mountain Creek Ladies’ League were Molly Collins and Peggy Grey. There were also sponsor draws, which 17 ladies were lucky enough to win, with thanks to the following August sponsors: Arnprior Flooring (Linda Griffen); Marg Poutney; Urban Ford; In Tune Chiropractic (Dr. Trisha Gibson); Pilon Family Funeral Home; P38 Energy; and Macartney Foods. The ladies of Mountain Creek extend their deep appreciation to Cathi Muldoon who has done a great job over the past 12 years as our sponsor contact. Now that’s a volunteer. Cathi has graciously offered to “train” whomever steps into her “shoes.” On Sept. 9 the ladies held a tombstone tournament. This is a very popular event and loads of fun finding out where a player will “die” based

on handicap. For example with a 20 handicap you’d have to plant your tombstone on your 91st stroke (20 + ladies’ par of 71). The winner was Marlene Nevins. Faye Raycroft won the longest putt and Karen Machan, closest to the hole. A Ladies Mixer called (for fun) the “Stuffed Bra” organized by Elaine Pritchard was held on Sept. 12. This was a partner event using the Chapman formula where a two-lady team each hit a drive, each hit their partner’s ball then taking the bestplaced ball, took turns hitting until holing out the ball. Elizabeth von Bloedau [pictured] and Wendy Tessier won with a net 75. The idea behind mixers is to play and get to know other golfers, and it works. Ringer board - never heard of it? It’s a board where golfers record their best ever scores on any one hole over the course of the season to arrive at an optimal score. The Mountain Creek Ladies participate in both competitions: a Ringer Board and a Birdie Tree - where only birdies (one under par) are recorded. Both are a good means to measure im- Hole in one winner Heather Sulpher. provements and accomplishments in one’s game. Local artist and golfer Dianne Bauer has donated one of her beautiful original paintings to the Ladies’ League as a means of fundraising. Anyone visiting the club is invited to purchase a “chance to win” before the season ends. Let’s talk about weather: after a good hard rain Sept. 6, the MC Senior Mixed Golf League took to the soggy fairways (and in some cases, rough) for a fun-packed round of Old Yeller. The expressions on the faces of those in the clubhouse following the round spoke volumes and it is probably just as well that this year’s venture with this particular format is over and done as scoring was well nigh impossible. The winning foursome, with a jaw dropping 174, was composed of Cheryl Barr, Peggy Gray, Steve Blais and Stu Thompson. Then, September blessed the Seniors on Sept. 13 with a sunny, hot day as they enjoyed a Modified Scramble format (or as it was known in one foursome, hit your drive and then move your ball to Stu Thompson’s). The day was highlighted by a hole-in-one by Heather Sulpher on #3 - appropriately acknowledged by a standing ovation when she entered the clubhouse. Graham Long and Peter Lanoue, Heather’s playing partners, benefitted from Heather’s ace but seemed somewhat reluctant to share in the bar tab. The winners in the skill category were Suzanne Lantos (net 53) and Cheryl Barr (net 55) for the ladies and George Freda and Gord Clark (both with net 59) for the men. Honourable mention to Bill Hoy and Chuck Stickland who lost out in the tiebreaker. All the seniors are hoping the good weather continues! Thus, September seems even busier than August, despite other activities calling out to everyone. Many new golfers, taking advantage of the fall rates to try out the club, are being welcomed and joining in the fun. The more, the merrier! As for October: fore! 26 Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, September 28, 2017

Beatty Thibeau, of Cobden Ontario, succumbed to his long battle with melanoma cancer on Friday September 8th 2017, the day of his 67th birthday, just minutes after his 3 children and grandson blew out his birthday candles. Beatty was surrounded by his family and Renfrew Hospice staff. He passed as he lived, on his own terms, fighting to hold on until he could no longer, and then waiting for most of the crowd to disperse from his room before taking his final breaths. A peace and comfort he had not known in a long time was with him that morning. Beatty is survived by his 3 children, Jordan of Pembroke, Jared (Vera) of Burlington, and Celeste of Pembroke; loving grandfather to Evan Willis Thibeau, and dear friend to his son Jordan’s godson Logan Mathieu. Beatty is also survived by his brother Mervyn (Shirley) of Marmora, and his 3 nieces, Robyn Ferguson, Michelle Clarkson, and Tari Thibeau. Beatty is predeceased by his parents Forrest & Hilda, and his sister Marilyn Hollywood (Ray). Beatty will be remembered for his many passions; amongst them: tennis, curling, fishing, motorcycling, Budweiser beer, and dancing! Somewhere behind the pearly gates right now, he’s giving a Texas 2-step lesson and chatting up a pretty lady, if that’s considered acceptable there; and even if it’s not, he’s doing it anyway. Beatty has donated his body to the University of Ottawa Anatomy Division for medical research purposes, after which cremation will take place. Beatty’s Celebration of Life will take place Friday September 29th 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Evangelical United Church, 368 Miller Street in Pembroke. In Beatty’s memory, donations to the Renfrew Hospice (459 Albert Street, Renfrew, ON, K7V 1V8, www.hospicerenfrew.ca/) would be greatly appreciated.

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, it may seem like you have long been preparing for a big event. Now is your chance to finally take action. Try to do something proactive this week. You are ready to move forward.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, you may head in one direction only to find that you might have been better off going elsewhere. Eventually you will get your bearings.

TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, reality is setting in this week, and you realize just how much you need to catch up on. There is no more room for procrastination. It is time to get busy.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, even if you step out of your comfort zone, you will not venture too far. That is fine by you since you tend to be a creature of habit. Just expand your reach a little bit.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Take a risk at work, Capricorn. If you consistently sit in the shadows, then you won’t ever get ahead. Try a few things to make an impact without generating big waves.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, an attitude about a particular relationship is changing, and you may need to go with the flow. This may result in some self-doubt, but you can make it through.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Your friendly attitude can be just what others need in the week ahead, Libra. They simply cannot resist your charms, and you can help them to settle down.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Making decisions this week requires little effort on your part, Aquarius. That’s because all of your stress has melted away in the last few days and things are relatively easy.

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, shifting circumstances at work may leave you a little confused. Reassess your situation and come up with a new plan. Work collectively toward the goal.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, recognition is coming your way. Embrace the attention and recognize that it is not unfounded. You earned the praise about to be heaped on you.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, even though everything seems predictable right now, things are about to get a little backwards in the next few days

Moose are currently in a real rut MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’s Way

Autumn is here and despite the recent, unseasonably high temperatures, natural history phenomena are proceeding on schedule. Goldenrods and asters dominate the landscape. Canada geese numbers are on the rise and moose are in their rut. The rut — the moose’s breeding season — extends from mid-September to mid-October. Its age-old rituals are dominated by elegant displays and, on occasion, aggressive behaviour. Over the past two weeks I looked for rutting moose in Algonquin Park. Fresh tracks meandering along old roads or trails, shrubs with smashed branches, and loud moans of female moose are signs the rut has begun. It was shortly after 6 a.m. and I was walking to West Rose Lake on the Mizzy Lake Trail where on the previous morning I watched a large cow eating aquatic plants, and later, fording the creek on the opposite side of the rail bed. On this morning, I en-

Extremely fresh tracks of two large and one small moose zigzagged across the rail bed. I stopped and listened intently but apart from the half-hearted song of a white-throated sparrow, it was silent. I

quietly continued on, scanning for moose near a small pond. After passing the pond I came around a bend and to my great surprise, looked directly into the eyes of a large cow moose. Beside her was her calf, which also silently stared at me.

I froze and both moose remained motionless. After several minutes a loud “crack” of a breaking branch caused them to look to the side. Another “crack” and a reasonably large bull sauntered out of the forest. The bull stopped and stared at me. By now the light was sufficient for a few photos, and I took advantage of it. Eventually, the cow began browsing on maples beside the rail bed, the calf following her lead. I became nervous when both began moving toward me, the bull in close pursuit. I carefully moved backwards, keeping my eye on the trio while planning an escape route if necessary. Suddenly the cow began moaning loudly and the bull began uttering guttural “gawunks” while his tongue licked the air for love scents. It was clear these moose were ready to mate. Fortunately for me, the cow left the rail bed and slowly strolled into the woods, the calf and bull close behind. I quietly snuck down to the edge of the pond and hid at a good vantage point. The cow and calf were visible but the bull was not, so I uttered a few cow calls. Eventually the bull responded and came into view. As it approached the cow, both began to vocalize and I got ready to photograph mating. Just then a photographer wandered along the trail and spotted me, and then the moose. He started down the bank near me, spooking the moose in the process. They left and could not be coaxed out again. Their love calls soon faded as they moved away. The photographer’s actions likely prevented me from recording a rarely seen event. But perhaps some behaviours are best kept away from probing eyes and cameras! The nature email is mruntz@start.ca

Mary waits for the feeling of accomplishment to settle in Mother said I was old enough. There were many little chores I was already doing, like keeping the wood box full, and making sure the pan under the icebox didn’t overflow. And now Mother said I was old enough to make butter! I was both delighted and annoyed. Delighted because this was a very important job, and annoyed because we always churned on Saturday morning, and this new chore was certainly going to cut into my playtime. My sister Audrey, who up to then, was in charge of the churning, was more than happy to give it up. I certainly didn’t have to be taught how to do it. Goodness knows I watched Audrey every Saturday, and to me, all I had to do was sit on a

They will perform country, Irish, Celtic, jigs, reels and a true mixture of party music. Eddie Coffey is from Newfoundland and Labrador. His songs tell of life in the Maritimes, and of events that have had an impact on him. His stories are all true. One of the hottest bands from Newfoundland, Eddie and Rhonda generate energy and excitement everywhere they perform. This dynamic band is comprised of very talented musicians. They have produced several albums and have travelled throughout North America including local venues, entertaining a wide variety of groups. chair, with the churn between my knees, and plop the plunger up and down in the cream until I made butter. It was an early Fall day when Mother announced that was the Saturday when I would take on this new chore. The churn had been rolled into the kitchen, very carefully, because it was half full of cream, and a chair put in front of it. I was ready to begin. But Mother said I would have to put on a big pinny, and it didn’t take me long to find out why. I had watched Audrey often enough to know that you simply grabbed the plunger with both hands and pumped until you could feel butter forming in the bottom of the churn. So I pulled up a chair, wrapped my bony knees around the churn, and began. Plop, plop, plop. I speeded up the pace, figuring the faster I went, the sooner I would be finished. The lid on the churn had a hole in the center big enough to give the plunger lots of room. It didn’t take me long to find out why I had to don the big flour-bag pinny. The cream splashed up through the hole, and since I was so much shorter than Audrey, much of it hit me square in the eyes, and the front of the pinny was soon covered too. Audrey said going faster did nothing to hasten the butter. She was right...my arms ached, and I could tell nothing was happening in the churn.

to the largest bowl we owned, and without measuring, Mother tossed in some salt. The butter was mixed and mixed until it was to Mother’s liking, and then pressed into the butter mold. Packed down until it was a solid mass, the butter was then released from the mold onto waxed paper. Audrey said it was exactly a pound when it came out. It would be wrapped and put in the ice box, some of it peddled door to door in Renfrew, and the rest of it used on our own table. I had never been so tired in my life. I went over to the creton couch by the stove, and stretched out, aching from top to bottom. I figured it was too soon to try to barter with my sister to change back to her making the butter, and me doing something that didn’t wear me down to a dishrag. Mother could see the state I was in, but instead of giving me sympathy she said, “each Saturday it will get easier. You’ll see.” I didn’t believe her for a minute. And I wondered how long it would take for that feeling of accomplishment for a job well done that Mother always talked about, would hit me. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK

Also, my bottom started to develop pins and needles, so I had to stop the process to fetch a cushion from the couch to sit on. It looked to me like this was going to turn into an all-morning job. The wall clock ticked away, and I could feel my eyelids start to droop, and it felt like any minute I was going to keel over in a heap on the kitchen floor. And then it happened. The plunger was no longer splashing cream out the opening in the lid. It got heavier and heavier to pound, even Mother and Audrey who were doing other things in the kitchen, knew that the moment had come. They could tell by the sound! My arms felt like lead. Mother came over and lifted the lid, peered inside, and said, “Well, good for you, Mary. You have made your first batch of butter.” The rest of the job would be up to my sister and Mother. With a big flat wood scoop, the butter was moved
