Mother living in poverty challenges social media ‘ignorance’ DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
EDITOR’S NOTE: The following story is the first in a series dedicated to poverty in Arnprior. A wide variety of angles and viewpoints, including those of governmental agencies, will be included. The response from social media to the news that Arnprior has the highest child poverty rate in Renfrew county was frustrating to Danielle Raymond, a mother of two living in rent-geared-to-income housing. She lives the experience of poverty and knows many others with a similar story. Facebook comments to the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide’s page that blamed women for having children - for ‘not keeping your knees closed’ as one phrased it are ill informed, she said. “It comes from a place of ignorance,” said Raymond, who likened the dialogue to a misogynistic witch-hunt. “I felt sick reading those comments.” Women and their children occupy most of the social hous-

Danielle Raymond and her children, Rowan and Elijah, struggle to overcome the various pressures poverty can impose upon families. The social media comments made following a recent Metroland Media story on the topic drew Danielle from her silence. ing units in Arnprior, she said, because many are victims of domestic assault. When police remove the ac-
cused and lay charges a no contact order arises for both sides. It could take two to eight months to determine if the ac-
cused is allowed to contact the children, during which time the mother – in most cases – parents alone and manages family
finances. She must also navigate the legal system, both criminal and family, and schedule visits with multiple service agencies. It could be a year or more before child payments are enforced. The (mostly) fathers are effectivity absolved of responsibility with the help of notoriously slow courts. Of the dozens of social media comments on the story, none broached the topic of irresponsible males, she noted. Then added that sometimes men are victims of assault, too. “Assault I think is pretty consistent in housing. There’s quite a bit in Arnprior,” she said. “The system strips away responsibility from men and villainizes women by putting the onus women for child rearing.” In her case and others she knows of, Raymond said there was no deliberate intention to accept funding from Ontario Works. There is so little money, which requires such a massive effort to obtain from government agencies, that few would voluntarily put themselves in

poverty, she surmises. A case-by-case consideration of those in poverty should replace sweeping assumptions. “I can’t help but shake my head when I think of all the assumptions my former well-intentioned self made about the people living in poverty.” Raymond is both university and college educated (the first in her family); observably intelligent and articulate; has worked many jobs, including high-salaried careers; and is a long-time rights advocate for the poor. However, she has done the math. She would need a job that pays $42,000 for her to leave social assistance. The minute she took any job her rent and utility bills would rise to the maximum level, the child tax and GST benefits would drop, childcare support would soon evaporate, and gasoline and businesses clothing costs would increase. “People don’t get it. It catches you in this sticky point,” she said. “If only they could keep some benefits there for a time.” See POVERTY, page 10

Focus on the ARH Emergency Department The Emergency Department at Arnprior Regional Health is a busy place. Approximately 18,400 patients seek medical attention each year.
Emergency Department Rural Trauma Training Emergency Department (ED) Staff recently took the Rural Trauma Team Development Course (RTTDC). This course is specifically designed for rural hospitals, like Arnprior & District Memorial Hospital, who refer trauma patients to larger hospitals. This course was developed due to the recognition that trauma patients in rural settings have unique needs because of isolated locations and, “Rural hospitals see different types of injuries, such as often times, circumstances. The course takes into account that not all rural hospitals have the hunting and logging accidents, snowmobile and ATV accidents, same resources, both personnel and physical, highway collisions at higher as other rural hospitals. This means that all training is offered at the specific rural hospital so speeds and poorer visibility. The staff can learn the tactics, and how it all works, injuries can be more profound as well. Although rural areas in their own work environment. The course consists of a review of the Advanced experience 60 percent of trauma deaths, they have just Trauma Life Support (ATLS) approach as well 20 percent of the population.” as hands on team based simulation scenarios. Melissa Waggott, RN Trauma coordinator TOH The goal of the RTTDC is to improve care of the rural trauma patient by: establishing a trauma team using the personnel and resources actually available at the referring hospital; developing a team approach to trauma resuscitation; stabilization and prompt transfer; and identifying key factors in organizing and preparing the resuscitation area and equipment. Thank you to The Ottawa Hospital for offering this course.
Accomplishments & Partnerships ®ARH developed a partnership between the emergency department and Renfrew County Mental Health and Addiction Treatment Services. ®ARH participates in the Regional Stroke Program and the Regional STEMI Program (heart attack).®ARH implemented a Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Tool. ®We increased the Medical Day Clinic by one day every two weeks. ®ARH staff took the Gentle Persuasive Approach course (Dementia). ®ARH improved access to Arnprior (and area) residents for minor procedures due to increased procedure time and physician resource. 4 Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, October 5, 2017
Post Discharge Phone Calls
Patients often leave the emergency department with a list of things they need to do, from prescriptions to fill to booking follow up appointments. It can be confusing and if you are not feeling well in the first place, difficult to remember all the instructions. If the patient does not follow their discharge instructions, they could end up medically worse and back in the emergency department. This is why we started post discharge phone calls.
Tennille is one of the nurses you may speak with during a post discharge phone call.
Patients who present with chest pain, abdominal pain and fever receive a phone call 24-36 hours following discharge. Patients who are triaged (assessed) with chest pain and/or abdominal pain that have left without being seen, are also called to ensure they did see a physician regarding their condition. Post-discharge phone calls have always been about quality. Patients’ perception of their care is a by product of quality. There is a new addition to the When care is quality and patientemergency department, a centered, they receive better clinical mental health safe room. This outcomes. Post discharge calls, long private room allows emergency proven to drive stronger transitions of department staff to provide more care, are a proven tactic to improve personal, dignified care for clinical outcomes, affect the patient care patients who may be in crisis. experience, and reduce preventable readmissions.
Police release name of suspect in fatal Arnprior crash Police have named and charged the suspected 20-year-old driver of the Monday, Sept. 25 crash on Daniel Street that claimed the life of 65-year-old Sheila Welsh of Arnprior. In a press release issued Tuesday evening (Sept. 26) just after 7 p.m. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) announced that Zachary Wittke of Eganville is being held in custody pending a bail hearing on Sept. 29. It was adjourned in court that day. A bail hearing was set for Oct. 3. Wittke is charged with: dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death; flight while being pursued by police; driving while disqualified; and with theft of a motor vehicle over $5,000. Wittke is known to police. In April of 2016 he received a lifetime driving ban and a 10year weapons ban after pleading guilty to theft
of a vehicle, possession of a weapon, uttering a death threat and threatening a peace officer, among other related charges The charges stemmed from an incident in which he filmed himself driving a stolen truck and posted the clip to Facebook, claiming he was “homicidal and suicidal.” That incident ended when police apprehended him at an Ottawa Chapters, where he suffered self-inflicted knife wounds. He was sentenced to two years in jail at that time. As a young offender, Wittke was involved in an incident that spanned the U.S. border and ended with a high speed pursuit and a number of felony charges. On Monday, Sept. 25 at approximately 3:20 p.m., OPP officers of the Renfrew detachment responded to a driving complaint involving a stolen vehicle. The same vehicle was later in-
volved in a fail to remain collision in Renfrew. Responding OPP officers observed the suspect vehicle on Highway 17 traveling eastbound in the area of Calabogie Road. Shortly after, the suspect vehicle was involved in a multi-vehicle collision on Daniel Street in Arnprior where Welsh was pronounced dead at the scene. A criminal investigation is being conducted with members of the OPP Renfrew Detach-
ment under the direction of Major Case Manager, Detective Inspector Rob Hagerman of the Criminal Investigation Branch. The OPP notified the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which invoked its mandate. As a result the OPP will not be able to provide any further information. SIU has put out a call for witnesses with any information to call 1-800-787-8529.
Fatality prompts safety discussion A stuffed bear leans against a rock at the site of a recent fatal accident. Township council is looking at ways to improve safety along White Lake Road, the scene of several accidents.
DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
The death of a young woman in McNab/Braeside last month had one township councillor exploring ways to improve safety along White Lake Road. Twenty-two-year-old Shannon MacPherson of Ottawa was pronounced dead at the scene on Monday, Aug. 28, after her car smashed into a large rock in the road’s ditch. She was heading down the twisting road at a hilly portion of the road when her car crossed the road. “I’m just a little bit shocked – like everyone else – that the life of a young woman died in our township,” Mark MacKenzie said. “It’s the most dangerous stretch in the township outside the highway.” MacKenzie said he travels the road every day and is concerned about its safety. His neighbour suffers from an injured shoulder after an accident in the area. He said it isn’t possible to modify the road itself, private homes

are on either side. But maybe a “Dangerous road: beware” sign and guardrails would help. Mayor Tom Peckett said he would talk to the county public works director about signage and guardrails. He added that speed limit signs at a low 50 to 60 kilometres per hour “doesn’t seem to mean anything.” He gave up sending messages to OPP to patrol the area. Peckett, a former po-
lice officer, is asking residents to not call but email. OPP doesn’t charge the township for responses that are emailed. Coun. Heather Lang said her eldest son flipped his car at the same area. He wasn’t hurt. She said an email blitz to OPP about dangerous driving in the village of White Lake worked in the past. “Five minutes later they were in the village,” Lang said.

Minimum wage hike threatens economy, business leaders told DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
Raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour will have a devastating impact on the economy, Arnprior business leaders heard at a recent breakfast meeting. Karl Baldauf of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce did not mince words when it came to the Ontario government’s plan to jump minimum wages 32 per cent in 18 months. Bill 148: Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act is a threatening and arbitrary proposal that will have unintended consequences, he said. “It’s a very concerning time for business people in Ontario,” Baldauf said. “It’s going to cause some serious harm to our economy.” He dismisses proponents’ framing the issue as one of full time workers forced to use food banks. A living wage is useless if jobs are killed off. “This is not for lack of helping people. That’s not the issue,” he said. “You support people through creating jobs.” He believes jobs are created by lowering taxes and regulations, the trickle down system first put in place by Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher in the early 1980s. hour come into effect. “Large employers should not be demonized.” MacDonald’s, Walmart and many other large corporations need to be in the province to access customers, he conceded, and although they are sitting on billions of dollars in profits that aren’t being cycled back into the economy, Baldauf said MacDonald’s is more a collective of locally owned small businesses. They shouldn’t be penalized for taking a risk and creating jobs. The Ontario Chamber of Commerce asked economists how much Bill 148 would cost businesses: $23 billion over the first two years. “How do they swallow that? How is that acceptable?” he said. “Well, 50 per cent will be passed on to employees in the way of job cuts. Another 29 per cent will be passed on to consumers. And about 21 per cent will be up to the businesses to swallow.” The Liberals will introduce offsets totalling $12 billion. Every 10 per cent increase to minimum wage brings a six per cent decrease to jobs for youth, he said. As many as 185,000 jobs are at risk in the first two years alone. “Fifteen dollars an hour is great, but only if you have a job.”

Chee-Chung Pan is about to close down his Videoflicks store at the Arnprior Shopping Centre after nearly 30 years in business.
Video store closing at mall DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
That’s a cut and wrap for one longtime business in Arnprior. Videoflicks at the Arnprior Shopping Centre will close its doors. The movie rental store has been a fixture at the mall for 29 years. Chee-Chung Pan was the only owner of the store, and remembers when he first realized Arnprior needed a video store back in the late 1980s. “That was the peak time to open a video store, in 1989,” Chee-Chung said. “We were very busy then.” It seems the end of an era for the entire industry. Even huge chains like Blockbuster have closed up shop. Many say technology is to blame: internet killed the video store. With the advent of Netflix and other streaming entities, the notion of hopping in the car, arriving at a physical store, scanning the shelves of empty VHS or CD boxes, paying for one or more at the counter (by handing real money to a real human being), then back in the car, back home, is all seen as so tedious these days. Much easier is to
plop on the couch and within a few clicks, the show is ready to go on. Chee-Chung is not in the least bitter about the circumstances. He’s met a lot of nice people of the almost three decades, he said, and is actually looking forward to shutting the doors for the last time. “I’m retiring,” he said, smiling broadly. “I’ll look back at what a fun business it was. I got to meet a lot of different people. I made a lot of friends here.” His personal favourites? Star Wars and Star Trek series. “I’m a sci-fi fan, for sure.” His best rental? Batman with Michael Keaton; Jack Nicholson as The Joker. Chee-Chung hasn’t tried to sell the business. He knows of two others that have been for sale for two years. He doubts any buyers are out there. He hasn’t heard of a new business going into the location. He is simply looking forward to his own sequel. “I’m going to take a break for a while, but then I have lots of things I want to do.”

Try to be cyber safe
October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and law enforcement agencies are trying to use the opportunity to make the public more aware of the risks associated with being online. It is sometimes difficult for many of us to figure out which digital ads or social media posts are legitimate, which is why police are offering safety tips and best practices in order to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of fraud or identity theft. For example, the OPP’s campaign is focused on four broad themes: identity theft; online child safety; online shopping and safe trade zones; and the OPP cyber crime investigations team. Online and digital crimes in Canada are already estimated to total in the billions of dollars, and police are warning that the losses are expected get even worse as next-generation crime devices and schemes evolve and become more advanced. We know that scams that are not that new are still making the rounds
and finding more victims, a recent example of which is a business that received unsolicited emails advertising heavy equipment for sale that were reportedly based on information lifted from legitimate auction and sales sites. The victim follows up with the apparently legit source of the emails and, after completing a wire transfer, is provided with excuses as to why the equipment has not been delivered and communicating has been difficult. In addition to using caution when dealing with unsolicited emails, the public is being reminded of caller ID spoofing in which the telephone number on display is a local or familiar number to trick the potential victim into placing trust with the caller when, in fact, the call could be coming from anywhere in the world. Try not to feel embarrassed about reporting a loss after being duped, police emphasize. You are not alone, and sharing your experience could save others from a similar outcome.
Caught in time: A patient’s story about early screening for breast cancer MICHAELA SCHREITER
Did you know that 20 per cent of all breast cancers were noninvasive? Did you know that screening can help detect these cancers before they become invasive? One patient in particular knows all too well the importance of early screening. When Brenda went for what she thought was a routine mammogram, her mind was elsewhere. It was just weeks after her mother had passed away, and she was thinking about the celebration of life. When the doctors told her they found something irregular, Brenda (who did not want her last name included) wasn’t sure what to do next. Dr. Jean Seely, Champlain regional cancer program’s regional breast imaging lead, was there to go over all the pos-

women over age 35. One in eight women will get breast cancer in her lifetime. One in 25 will die from it. But did you know that 20 per cent of all breast cancers were noninvasive? Did you know that screening can help detect these cancers before they become invasive? What Brenda’s screening found was very small. After the
biopsy and a surgery to remove the remaining cells, her treatment was complete. Throughout what was a very stressful time, Brenda credits the entire health care team for helping her through the ordeal. “Going into my first meeting with my surgeon, I was anxious and overwhelmed. Afterwards, I felt confident and much better about my situation,” she said. Brenda’s cancer is known as DCIS – ductal carcinoma in situ. It’s a noninvasive form of breast cancer that makes up about 20 percent of all breast cancers. DCIS is often found through screening. It becomes invasive and progresses about half the time. The earlier it is found, the faster treatment can start, and the less likely it is to become invasive. This also means that the treatment will be less aggressive for the patient.

Dr. Seely invites anyone who hasn’t been screened to schedule a mammogram every one to two years. If someone has noticed changes in their body, they should schedule a mammogram but let their doctor know so that a more specialized mammogram, called a diagnostic mammogram, will be done. “Our goal is to pick up a breast cancer before it is felt,” said Dr. Seely. “If you notice something different about your body, or haven’t been screened in a while, make that appointment. The importance of early detection in cancer cannot be understated. Coverall with 1,600 hay bales up in flames Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) crews battled a fire that involved 1,600 bales of hay in a coverall structure at 3741 Dominion Springs Rd. near Kinburn Side Road. The fire was deemed under control at 7:41 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 2 and crews worked throughout the night. Overhaul operations have been ongoing and fire crews will remain on scene for the remainder of the day to ensure all hot spots are extinguished. “We wish to clarify at this time that the fire is being extinguished exclusively by water,” reads a press release. Using foam was
considered but upon further consideration it would have damaged the farmer’s crop fields that are in close proximity to the fire. Therefore, no foam was used during this incident. Overhaul operations consist primarily of firefighters soaking bales of hay and working closely with two heavy equipment operators who are spreading the wet hay over the surrounding fields to ensure that fire can no longer spread in the bales. “We again want to thank all the agencies that collaborated in this incident to ensure scene and personnel safety.” Namely the sur-
rounding fire apparatus and personnel from Mississippi Mills - Almonte and Pakenham fire stations. “Thank you as well as our partners in emergency and protective services Ottawa Paramedic Service, Ottawa Police Services and Salvation Army for great team work.” Lastly, the coverall structure solely housed hay and the structure itself was not constructed of wood. There are no reported injuries at this fire. An investigator was on scene to assess the scene in order to determine the cause.

Stay clear of dams during Thanksgiving Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is reminding the public to stay away from hydroelectric stations and dams this Thanksgiving weekend. “Thanksgiving weekend is a great time to go and enjoy the fall colours with family and friends, but water levels near dams and hydroelectric stations can change quickly and change without notice,” warns Mike Martelli, OPG president renewable generation power marketing. “Stay clear, stay safe this long-weekend by obeying all warning signs, buoys, booms and barriers near hydroelectric stations and dams.” OPG operates 66 hydroelectric stations and 241 dams on 24 river systems. Most of these facilities are remotely controlled. As demand for
electricity rises and falls throughout each day, operators stationed many kilometres away open and close dams, and start and stop generating St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in Renfrew celebrated Spirit Week from Sept. 11 to 15 with a different theme for each day. Poverty trap worse for high-needs kids Continued from page 2
A few turns of fate – including trusting the wrong person, having a high-needs child – and she was caught in the “trap” of poverty. A high-needs child can add extra stress on a family and prove more time consuming. Her daughter Rowan, 11, and son Elijah, 4, are fortunate to attend school in Canada where the public systems are known for equity and high standards. But in her son’s case, he has yet to be assessed; it costs money for a quick diagnosis by a specialist; so he won’t get a shared educational assistant (EA) like other students. Poor folks have to work with agencies like Family and Children’s Services, the Phoenix Centre, Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre, and CHEO. The waitlists are long and the work is time consuming, which can add up to years. “I waited over six months for my son to see a counsellor at the Phoenix Centre only to be told they weren’t sure the right fit when it came to addressing
his particular needs.” Raymond explained that it is a pileup of disadvantages such as the lack of an EA, and the inability to collect child support, which lead to an inevitable complaint: poor people beget poor people. The kids learn it from their parents, as the comments go. “I would say it is a cycle, no question,” she said. “There isn’t the same access to opportunities other people have.” It should be mentioned that upper classes also learn from their parents. Money begets money. Inheritance, travel and extracurricular activities, access to better education and healthier foods – rich people have many advantages beyond personal abilities and even genetics that keep them from slipping into poverty. Most didn’t make it on their own; yet often insist poor people pull themselves out of poverty through individual effort. There is a growing gap between the shrinking few rich and the enlarging poor. According to Statistics Canada’s
income survey, from 2006 to 2015, the top 20 per cent increased their after-tax income from 44 to 45 per cent. The share of the remaining 80 per cent shrank. A common complaint is that poor people shouldn’t have money for frills such as cigarettes, alcohol, and pets. Raymond’s mother even told her to stop shaving her legs. She agrees that in an ideal world all the money would go to benefit children. But mental health problems are rampant among the poor. Self-medicating is inevitable. But she also insists the government agencies overseeing funding can make life so frustrating – through incompetence, ignoring rights, and other charges – that they push clients toward self-harm. “The system contributes to mental illness. The fight to get money sometimes drives you crazy,” Raymond said. “Just navigating the services available, the eligibility requirements and the personalities on the other side of the desk can consistently amount to 5 - 15

hours a week. This, in addition to parenting on one’s own and dealing with the many unrelenting factors that lead to and feed into cycle of poverty leaves the best of us exhausted and at times hopeless.” Raymond hasn’t lost hope. She is a born fighter. “I’ve just always been this way. I see an injustice… and I’ve had some adversity in my life,” she said. “And it really hits home for me to know that I’m in it.” Adversity is important to instilling compassion, she said. If more people suffered they would sympathize with others who do. Of all that she has suffered in the past few years, the most piercing has been the loss of power. In an eloquent and moving email to Metroland, Raymond said: “What I find most difficult about being poor is that I’ve lost my voice. As a paid professional, when I spoke or wrote passionately about the lives of others living in poverty without ever having experienced being poor - people listened and valued my words. “Now that I have direct experience with the issue my voice is suddenly irrelevant. I’m seen as making excuses for the life I’ve made for my children and me. I’m ridiculed when I try to speak out; accused of being lazy or worse. “As you can see from some of the comments on Facebook.”
Algonquin Trail upgrades underway Significant upgrades have begun across Renfrew County along the Algonquin Trail, known locally as the former CP Rail corridor. In Arnprior, Cavanagh Construction is resurfacing the trail in exchange for using a section of trail as a staging area over the past two years. G.P. Splinter Forest Products will be brushing, grading, and applying stonedust on Pembroke portions of the Trail in preparation for Zombie Thrill Run being held on Oct. 28. H and H Construction of Petawawa will be performing the work in that community, between Portage Road and Murphy Road. The Renfrew County ATV Club has been brushing and grading the Cobden portion, while the Township of Admaston-Bromley will be performing upgrades to the Town of Renfrew section. Other sections of the trail may see localized improvements as the winter snowmobiling season kicks into gear later this year. While these upgrades are underway the County of Renfrew is reminding residents that the trail is currently not open to the public. At this time the trail remains closed to the public to ensure the safety of residents.

October 2017 Wow, what a heat wave. Where was this weather in June, July, and August? As I write this column (September 27th) which is forecast to be the last day of an unprecedented heat wave here in Ontario. We’ve had more consecutive days of over 30 degrees Celsius in the last five days than we had in total for the aforementioned months of June, July, and August. Weather can be so fickle. When I attended the Renfrew County Plowing Match at the farm of Mel and Lynne Langton in the Beachburg area on September 16th, we were right in the midst of the unseasonably hot weather. In speaking to some farmers there, they informed me that if they got another week or two of warm weather the corn crop would be just fine. They certainly got their wish on the weather; I hope that the yield and the quality of the corn has responded in-kind. I’m told that in measuring heat-unit days, we’ve received more than a month’s worth of heat in just 10 days. While I couldn’t spend the whole day at the Plowing Match due to other commitments, I must say that based on the number of people I met in my time there, I would expect that it was one of the most successful plowing matches we’ve ever had. A big thank you to Mel and Lynne for providing the land and being great hosts. From Renfrew County I went on to the International Plowing Match that was held in Walton, Ontario this year. As luck—or bad luck—would have it, we were not blessed with the same nice weather on the day we were there for the parade; it rained so heavily that not only was the parade cancelled, but the tented city itself was closed on the Wednesday. In spite of all that, my colleague from Huron-Bruce, MPP Lisa Thompson told me that the rest of the week was tremendous. While I couldn’t be there myself on September 23rd, one of our local farm families, the Cull family from Douglas, was honoured as one of province’s 2017 BMO Ontario Farm Family Award Recipients. It is an honour for us all when one of our own is recognized with a prestigious award. I would like to congratulate Preston and Terry for making us all proud. The Cull Family not only supports us by providing their share of the food we all partake in, but spend a great deal of their time organizing and supporting community events.

Two Rivers Musical to stage show-stopping musical At its recent 2017-18 annual general meeting, Two Rivers Musical Productions, Arnprior’s very own musical theatre company, made two major announcements: its new slate of board directors, and the name of its spring 2018 musical production. This year’s board will be chaired by Chris Tonkin, an Arnprior resident, who has been actively involved with Two Rivers productions for several years. Other board directors are Past Chair, Karen Crozier; Treasurer, Laura Hunter; Secretary, Tanya Williams; Publicity, Marilyn Campbell; Membership, Tracey Liebig; Performance Venues, James Hrkach; and Directorat-Large, Anne Sabourin.
Then came the much-awaited announcement of next spring’s production: Mary Poppins. This is a delightful Broadway musical, with a variety of roles for many ages, and ideal for family audiences. Marybeth Pidgeon will be the director, and Lisa Webber the music director. Auditions for the show will take place before Christmas, probably at the end of November or the beginning of December. Once the dates are confirmed and audition material has been chosen, announcements will appear in local media and on the Two Rivers website http://www.tworiversmusicals.ca/ wordpress/.
War graves commission needs your help
Thanksgiving is fast approaching which is traditionally the time to reflect on all of the things we are grateful for. And there is so much. Regardless of the challenges we have and continue to face, the disappointment we often share in the policy of government, it is still crystal clear that we live in a wonderful country and inhabit one of the best parts of it. When you look at the unprecedented number of disasters that have taken place in just the last several weeks: the loss of life, the destruction of homes, and property damage calculated in the hundreds of billions of dollars—we have to count our blessings that we have remained safe and secure. For the first time in many years, we won’t have everyone home for this Thanksgiving. While we will have no less to be thankful for, there will be an emptiness that Vicky and I are not used to. As our family grows and build lives of their own, we have to accept that sometimes getting together is not always possible. We’re already looking forward to Christmas when we expect everyone home. In the meantime, Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. Enjoy one another.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission is responsible for the commemoration of all Commonwealth war dead from World Wars 1 and 2. The Commission is trying to confirm the burial location of Captain (Doctor) William Hamilton Lambert, who died in Toronto General Hospital on 11 June 1920. His last known address was in Moose Jaw, SK. Captain Lambert was born in Perth, Ontario. His parents were Sergeant Joseph H. Lambert and Mary (nee Farmer). His religion was believed to be Anglican or Baptist. His Ontario death certificate listed his place of burial as Arnprior. A brief obituary from the June 14 1920 edition of the Toronto Daily Star stated that “his remains leaving on the 9 … C.P.R. for Arnprior.” An obituary from the Perth Courier from June 18, 1920 stated that the funeral took place in Arnprior. Further,
an obituary in the Moose Jaw Evening Times dated June 12, 1920 stated that: “The funeral is being held today at his old home in Arnprior, Ontario.” After Captain Lambert’s father died, his mother re-married William Coutts of Arnprior. Mr. Coutts died June 15, 1902 and was buried in Albert Street Cemetery, Arnprior in E-123 (Plot 173). Captain Lambert’s mother died on Dec. 11, 1905 and was buried in the same cemetery. It is understood that Albert Street Cemetery was the only non-Catholic cemetery in use in 1920 in Arnprior. Therefore, it is believed that Captain Lambert is buried in Albert Street Cemetery. We would be grateful if anyone who can confirm his place of burial would contact Catherine Paterson at the Commission’s Canadian Agency in Ottawa. She can be reached by phone at: 613-995-9396. Her e-mail address is: catherine.paterson@vac-acc.gc.ca.
Fire Prevention Week Oct. 8-14: Plan two ways out of your home
It’s time to celebrate!
Fire department hosts open house on Saturday, Oct. 7 ARNPRIOR FIRE DEPARTMENT
Consider this scenario: it’s 2 o’clock in the morning. You and your family are fast asleep when you awaken to the smoke alarm sounding and the smell of smoke. What do you do? If you and your family don’t have a plan in place, it could jeopardize your safety, or even prove deadly. In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. This is why home escape planning is so critical in a fire situation. It ensures that everyone in the household knows how to use that small window of time wisely. “Developing and practicing a home escape plan is like building muscle memory,” said Cory Nicholas, fire prevention/ protection officer of the Arnprior Fire Department. “That pre-planning is what everyone will draw upon to snap into action and escape as quickly as possible in the event of a fire.” This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, ‘Every second counts: plan two ways out’ works to better educate the public about the critical importance of developing a home escape plan and practicing it. The Arnprior Fire Depart-
ment is working in co-ordination with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the official sponsor of the Fire Prevention Week for more than 90 years, to reinforce those potentially life-saving messages. Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 8-14. “Home escape planning is one of the most basic but fundamental elements of home fire safety, and can truly make the difference between life and death in a fire situation,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of outreach and advocacy. Practice your plan In support of Fire Prevention Week, the Arnprior Fire Department encourages everyone to develop a plan together and practice it. A home escape plan includes working smoke alarms on every level of the home, in every bedroom, and near all sleeping areas. It also includes two ways out of every room, usually a door and a window, with a clear path to an outside meeting place (like a tree, light pole, or mailbox) that’s a safe distance from the home. NFPA and the Arnprior Fire Department offer these additional tips and recommendations for developing and practicing a home escape plan:
Tips • Draw a map of your home with all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit. • Practice your home fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out. • Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them. • Make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find. • Close doors behind you as you leave — this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire. • Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building. To learn more about Fire Prevention Week and other important life safety initiatives please visit the Arnprior Fire Department for an open house’ event on Saturday, Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Don’t forget to bring your 150 Events passport and collect your stamp at this event. High schools begin new year with spirit week, sports and social justice RENFREW COUNTY CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Bishop Smith Catholic High School (BSCHS) and St. Joseph’s Catholic High School (SJHS) have begun the 2017—18 school year with a plethora of activity for students and staff alike. St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in Renfrew celebrated Spirit Week from Sept. 11 to 15 with a different theme for each day. On Wednesday, Sept. 13, all students dressed up in their best clothes and travelled across Renfrew to celebrate mass with students from Our Lady of Fatima Elementary School at Our Lady of Fatima Church. “We were honoured to have Father Ryan Holly celebrate the mass for us, along with Father
Kerry Brennan, Father Peter Do, and Father Anthony Burchat as concelebrants,” says principal Brennan Trainor. St. Joseph’s 2017 Spirit Week closed with a Spirit Day dance Friday, Sept. 15. “On this day, we enjoyed many indoor and outdoor activities culminating with our very popular, Spirit Day Dance,” notes Trainor. It was also announced that the school’s charity of choice for the next two years is the Renfrew Hospice. SJHS students will set all of their local fundraising targets toward helping the Renfrew Hospice. In addition, SJHS will continue to support the Dominican Republic Experience as its global charity of choice.

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK OCT. 8TH – 14TH Fire Prevention Week October 8th – 14th, 2017 “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!” You and your family are fast asleep when the smoke alarm sounds: Do you know what to do? Consider this scenario: its 2 o’clock in the morning. It ensures that everyone in the household knows how to use that small window of time wisely.“Developing and practicing a home escape plan is like building muscle memory,” said Cory Nicholas, Fire Prevention/Protection Officer of the Arnprior Fire Department.“That pre-planning is what everyone will draw upon to snap into action and escape as quickly as possible in the event of a fire.”
Arnprior Fire Dept. Open House Sat. Oct. 7th 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
This message brought to you by these community minded businesses:
This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme,“Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!” works to better educate the public about the critical importance of developing a home escape plan and practicing it.The Arnprior Fire Department is working in coordination with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the official sponsor of the Fire Prevention Week for more than 90 years, to reinforce those potentially life-saving messages. Fire Prevention Week is October 8-14, 2017. “Home escape planning is one of the most basic but fundamental elements of home fire safety, and can truly make the difference between life and death in a fire situation,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy.
In support of Fire Prevention Week, the Arnprior Fire Department encourages everyone to develop a plan together and practice it. NFPA and the Arnprior Fire Department offer these additional tips and recommendations for developing and practicing a home escape plan: • Draw a map of your home with all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit. To learn more about Fire Prevention Week and other important life safety initiatives please visit the Arnprior Fire Department for an “Open House” event on Saturday October 7th from 10:00am until 2:00pm. Don’t forget to bring your 150 Events passport and collect your stamp at this event. Turkey, pumpkin pie and our pets IAN STUPP Pet Talk
Turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes and don’t forget the pumpkin pie are just some of the favourites we all look forward to on Thanksgiving with family and friends. But what about our pets? Here are 12 safety tips to help keep your pets safe on Thanksgiving: 1. Begging at the Table: It would be best if you gave them their Thanksgiving treat in a bowl away from the table to avoid begging. Your guests would probably appreciate that. 2. Fatty foods: Too many fatty, rich, or unfamiliar foods can give
your pet pancreatitis or gastroenteritis; two medical conditions that can be very painful and even lifethreatening. 3. Diet and exercise: Maintain your pet’s regular meal and exercise schedule and avoid too many holiday leftovers. A disruption in his dietary routine can cause stomach upset, diarrhea and/ or vomiting. 4. Bones: Make no bones about it. Certain bones can lacerate or obstruct your pets’ insides. Save the bones for the broth - not your dog. 5. Onions: Onions and onion powder, widely found in stuffing and used as a general seasoning, will destroy your dog or
cat’s red blood cells, which can lead to anemia. 6. Grapes and raisins: Grapes and raisins contain a toxin that can cause kidney damage to both dogs and cats. 7. Alcohol poisoning: Alcohol poisoning in pets is more common than you think! This is because alcohol can be found in surprising number of places such as rum-soaked fruitcakes or unbaked dough containing yeast can result in alcohol poisoning, other life-threatening problems and death. 8. Chocolate: Chocolate can actually be fatal to your dog or cat; so all those sweets must be kept well out of reach. 9. Food wrappings:
Aluminum foil, wax paper and other food wrappings can cause intestinal obstruction. Make sure to place these items securely in the garbage. 10. Fresh water: Make sure your pet always has fresh water. When there are more people in the house, there’s more chance to bump into the water bowl leaving your pet dry. 11. Garbage: Keep an eye on the garbage and keep it securely fastened! If your dog gets into it, he may think he’s hit the jackpot, but all he’ll be winning is health problems from something as simple as gastric disturbance, vomiting and diarrhea to the worst-case
scenario - death. 12. Quiet time: For those of you that would like some piece and quite at the table, kennelling your cat or dog in an area of the home that is well lit and away from the excitement. Give them something to chew on or play with and leave a television or radio on. This will help distract them. Have a great Thanksgiving and don’t forget to leave room for dessert! Ian owns and operates Wags & Whiskers Dog and Cat Grooming and Puppy Kindergarten at 118 John St. N. For comments or suggestions Ian can be reached at 6236200 or wagswhiskers@ hotmail.com.
Minimum water levels end on both rivers Ontario Power Generation (OPG) would like to remind the public that the summer water level minimums for the Ottawa and Madawaska Rivers end after Thanksgiving Monday, Oct. 9. OPG will adjust its operations within allowable operating levels using the fall/winter requirements. This will result in lower water levels. Additionally, as part of OPG’s commitment to biodiversity around our generating sites, operators will lower water levels at Calabogie Generating Station (GS) and Stewartville GS, both on the Madawaska River, and on the Ottawa River at Chenaux GS. This “draw down” of water is done to encourage frogs and turtles to burrow deep into the mud before winter sets in. This initiative, which is supported by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF), could start in late October or early November, as temperatures get cooler. Residents and businesses along these rivers are advised to take all necessary precautions to ensure the lower waters do not have an impact on their properties. To learn more about water safety, please visit opg. com/watersafety and stayclearstaysafe.ca .

HOLIDAY RECIPES & SEASON’S GREETINGS 2017
The Arnprior Packers dropped both of their Central Canada Tier 2 Hockey League games this weekend. On Sept. 30 the Packers travelled to Carleton Place to face the Carleton Place Jr. Canadians, one of two new teams in the league this year. The Canadians crushed the Packers 9-3. The Packers were held off the score sheet until 2:18 of the second period when Colin Baggio scored assisted by Brandon English and Bailey Hein. At that point it was 2-1 for the Canadians, who then went out to score three unanswered goals. The Packers pulled Patrick Kealey from net and Mitchell Rukavina came in for the third period. In the third the Canadians again came out strong scoring two goals in the first three minutes. Alex Caparelli and English scored two power play goals midway through the final frame but the Canadians sealed the victory with two more goals late in the game. It was a much tighter game in Arnprior on Sunday, Oct. 1 as the Packers lost a close one to the Casselman

Vikings 2-1. The game was scoreless after the first period but things got interesting in the second when Casselman got on the board at 9:40. Shortly after, at 10:02 Packers head coach Hamish Fraser received a bench minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Vikings went up 2-1 with an empty net goal at 19:13 and the Packers quickly answered back at 19:37 with a goal by Franco Gagnon, helped out by an extra attacker and assisted by Davis Goodwin and Mason Farnes. This week The Packers travelled to Ottawa to face the Canadians on Oct. 3 at 7:20 p.m. On Friday, Oct. 6 the Packers host the Carleton Place Jr. Canadians at the Nick Smith Centre at 8 p.m. And then on Sunday the Packers travel to Richmond to face the Richmond Royals for an afternoon tilt at 1:30 p.m. Early in the season, after only eight games, the Packers are currently in fifth place in the Richardson Division with a record of 4-4. The Carleton Place Jr. Canadians are in first place with a record of 7-3.

Richard (Dick) Obst In loving memory of a dear husband and best friend who passed away 5 years ago, October 5, 2012 I remember the day I met you, And the day God made you mine, I remember the day God took you, and will remember “till the end of time. We made our vows together, Until death do we part, But the day God took you from me, my whole world fell apart. Sometimes I think I’m dreaming, I can’t believe its true, That I can go on living when I no longer have you. And the memories of the happy years, when we were together, The joys, the tears, the love, the fears, will stay with me forever. And when I’m sad and lonely, And everything goes wrong, I seem to hear you whisper, cheer up and carry on. The group has had an eventful history. “The club was a great meeting place for over 25 years. Singles came from Cobden, Deep River, Ottawa, Eganville, Quebec, Carleton Place, Almonte, Renfrew and Arnprior and points in between. Their main activity was a lunch meeting once a month and a Christmas party,” says the release. The luncheon was enjoyed in many restaurants in the whole area, FOR SALE

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

New England Asters are extremely popular with insects, such as this Painted Lady (top) and Milbert’s Tortoiseshell (bottom).
The flowers of fall are fading Despite the stretch of unseasonably high temperatures that seemed to halt summer’s departure, autumn has arrived. With shortening days and cooler temperatures, most summer wildflowers have vanished. Gone are viper’s bugloss, purple loosestrife, and Queen Anne’s lace. These gave way to smartweeds that adorned ponds, jewelweeds that lined damp shores and goldenrods that clustered in fields. However, even these have waned in recent days. Currently, asters are among the last of the wildflowers to brighten the landscape. A variety of asters grow locally. Some, such as panicled aster, are white. Others, such as Lindley’s aster, are pale blue. My favourite is New England aster, which sports deep rosepurple petals that strikingly set off the flower’s central cluster of bright yellow disk florets. Asters, like other members of their family (Asteraceae), have two types of flowers. Each bloom consists of petal-like ray flowers and a central cluster of disk flowers. Another unusual feature is that insects seldom ravage their leaves. In fact, it is difficult to find even one leaf that sports holes chewed by caterpillars or beetle grubs. Untouched leaves are signs that a plant contains powerful chemical deterrents. Milkweed leaves are laden with bitter-tasting terpenoids, toxins that in ex-
ceedingly large doses can cause heart failure. But, a few insects — notably Monarch caterpillars — eat milkweed leaves with impunity, safely storing the nasty chemicals in their bodies, thereby rendering themselves unpalatable. But, few insects seem able to cope with the alkaloids that permeate the leaves of asters. Alkaloids keep herbivores away — not only because they taste bad, but also because they interfere with the animal’s ability to digest food. Alkaloids contain nitrogen, and when eaten, they incorporate themselves into enzyme production in the animal’s gut, preventing their host from gleaning nutrition from its food. Aster leaves repel insects, but their blooms do quite the opposite. They attract them, and being among the last wildflowers to bloom, they receive a re-
markable amount of attention. In fact, watching a patch of flowering asters on a sunny day is like visiting an airport on a holiday weekend. There is constant motion, with hordes of visitors (including bees, wasps, hornets, flies and butterflies) landing and taking off. The insects are seeking food. Many, like hover flies, come to asters for their sugar-rich nectar. Others, such bumblebees, visit asters for their pollen. It is often difficult to tell hover flies from stinging insects, for many bear remarkably similar appearances — a mimicry that makes animals wishing to avoid the pain associated with eating bees or wasps avoid the harmless flies. With cooler, more seasonable weather finally here, the days of asters and their insect visitors are numbered. When the hard frosts finally arrive, the last of the asters will die, as will most of their insect visitors. In many cases, the eggs or larvae of the flying insects will survive the winter; for bumblebees, wasps and hornets, only the new queens that mated this fall will be around next spring. Which makes watching insects visiting asters right now akin to watching prisoners on death row. Perhaps the meal these fascinating insects attain will be their final one. Mary relished in Mother’s special kitchen treats Mother put the last lid on the jar of plum preserves. They had stewed on the back of the Findlay Oval all morning. Then with a slotted spoon, she put them in the big brown bowl, and when they were cool enough to handle, with her well-
scrubbed hands she squished out the stones, which were put on the breadboard. The pitted plums were then bottled. The stones were my treat. How I loved to smash them with the little kitchen hammer, and then eat the innards. To me, the pulp was as good as

anything I could buy from the candy counter at the Five and Dime store in Renfrew. When Mother and I were alone in the kitchen, just the two of us, there were other treats to come my way too. “How would you like some oven toast?” she might ask. Would I? My mouth would water just thinking of it. Thin slices of bread would be slathered with butter on both sides, and put on a wire rack over a tin pie plate, and put in the hot oven. I could hardly stand the wait, as it toasted on the topside, and then the slices were flipped over to turn a golden brown on the other. It was crisp when taken out of the oven, and piping hot, and I devoured yet another treat of that magic time alone with Mother in the kitchen. I loved when Mother was making relish this time of year. The smell of the spices, as the corn, or beets, cucumbers, or tomatoes stewing on the stove filled the kitchen. Mother would ladle out a heaping spoonful into a fruit nappy, and I would butter a slice of homemade bread, and dip it into the relish, and devour it in minutes. I knew if I asked for a second helping, Mother would say, “Better not...you don’t want to spoil your dinner.” Even if dinner was hours away, only one fruit nappy was all I was given, but how I loved that special treat. I think I was the only one in our entire family who liked crispy fried pork rinds. Before a slab of smoked bacon was fried, it was sliced thin, and the rind removed. Mother knew I loved this rind, and so while the bacon was frying in the big black pan, room was made for the slivers of rind for me, and when they were as crisp as little pieces of raw
spaghetti, another special treat came my way. Our ample vegetable garden served us well. I knew we would never go hungry MARY COOK over the coming winters when those shelves in the dug-out under the house we called a cellar, were full of canned vegetables, preserves, jams and jellies. Mother would spend days this time of year, “putting down.” And if I happened to be in the kitchen when she was making cucumber relish, I never failed to have a cucumber sandwich. To me, thick slices between two pieces of freshly baked bread, well buttered of course, was a special treat. No one else in my family, it seemed to me, liked cucumber sandwiches. But I could make a meal of them, if I was allowed, but again Mother would say, “Don’t spoil your supper.” Any one of these special treats would have been enough to amply satisfy me to replace my dinner or supper if allowed. But Mother saw to it that what I got was ‘just a taste’. I would be expected to eat my dinner or supper as well. My sister Audrey, who was always concerned about gaining weight, could never understand why I was as thin as rail with all I ate between meals, and would say she could gain a pound drinking water! It wouldn’t have mattered to me if I grew as big as a house, nothing would stop me from those kitchen treats I loved with a passion.
