Energy East cancellation welcome news to township councillors DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
At least two area politicians are pleased by the news that Energy East won’t be going forward. The highly controversial proposal to ship 1.1-million barrels of bitumen daily from Alberta to an oil refinery in New Brunswick met with resistance from environmentalists, First Nations, and a group of outspoken Montreal area mayors. The $15.7-billion plan was to convert a natural gas pipeline and add new ones along with pumping stations. The company proposing Energy East, TransCanada, estimated the creation of 14,000 direct and indirect full-time jobs each year during development and construction. Heather Lang, a councillor with the
Township of McNab/Braeside, along with council colleague Mark MacKenzie, spent more than a year studying the issue and possible local effects. She is glad the plan is off the table. “I am pleased that Energy East has been cancelled, and felt the writing was on the wall when (U.S.) President (Donald) Trump cleared the way for the Keystone project, Lang said in a statement. “As far as I am concerned, there’s no economic need for Energy East. Water quality was a “huge issue for her and felt the pipeline would put the drinking water of her residents and those living downstream from the pipeline, including residents of Ottawa, in “severe jeopardy in the event of an oil spill. Township council pushed hard to convince TransCanada to move the proposed pumping station away from its
proposed location on a hill overlooking the Madawaska River near the Stewartville Dam. “While we were successful, I for one was never convinced an oil spill would not happen, Lang said. She recalled Mayor Tom Peckett saying, during a meeting attended by TransCanada officials, that township residents “love their river. She also indicated demand is shifting away from oil to renewable energy sources such as wind and sun. And that some countries are reducing their carbon emissions with economic growth. “There’s no reason why we can’t do the same, Lang said. “This is a new world and our energies are best focused on clean energy alternatives. The Town of Arnprior sent a letter to those overseeing the project asking for safety to be top of mind. Mayor David
URBAN
Reid didn’t come out for or against the proposal, saying there is limited influence a small municipality can have in national projects. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski, called it loss for the economy. Along with travelling under the Bonnechere and Madawaska rivers, the pipeline would have crossed the Rideau River in Ottawa. Mayor Jim Watson hadn’t taken a strong stance on either side, but did declare it a victory for the environment. The federal Liberal government said TransCanada made a business decision and that the low price for oil likely played a factor. Proponents of the project say, when the government changed the approval rules via the National Energy Board, the project was effectively doomed.

Township considers 30-lot subdivision in McNab/Braeside DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
A public meeting about a new subdivision brought out a number of concerned township residents. The Township of McNab/Braeside is considering a new development by Bob Wachna and Patricia Felhaver at Mill Ridge Road and the Madawaska River. The 53-acres of land would include 30 single detached residential lots with frontage on a new internal road connecting to Mill Ridge. No parkland is proposed (developers may offer cash-in-lieu.) All members of council were at the Sept. 11 meeting to hear from residents, according to minutes of the meeting posted on the township’s website. Allan Sykes said three lots at the front of Mill Ridge are in a swamp and would likely be unbuildable or have wet basements. Detailed
design for drainage will need to be done before final approval, county planner Bruce Howarth said. Gillies Potvin was concerned about drainage onto his property, to which Deputy Mayor Brian Armsden said the developer would be expected to ensure no neighbouring properties are affected. More water cannot be directed onto another person’s property, Howarth added. Jacqueline Asselin worried about additional traffic and road repairs. She was told all roads are reviewed in the 10-year plan, but that if construction equipment causes damage the developer would have to pay for repairs. Rae-Anne Porter asked how long the construction period is going to cause an eyesore. A road can be built any time after submitting a deposit to the township for completion (should the developer abandon the project). She added that a street light should be put in at the subdivision and Mill Ridge. Armsden said
the township has a formula to determine when and where they go. Porter then asked about sufficient water supplies for that many houses. The developer provides well and water testing, including flow rates, which are peer reviewed. There isn’t much room to fit more properties on the site, she was told, and that council can chose to notify or not notify area residents when changes are made. Township engineers ensure roads are located with safety in mind, Porter was told when she requested none be built near her driveway. She asked to be notified of any changes and suggested parkland is included. Armsden said notifying all the residents “will be looked into,” reads the minutes. Resident John Townley disagreed, saying the township should take cash in lieu and put the money toward existing parks. He also welcomes the development but said the process is so oner-
ous on developers — not unlike the TransCanada pipeline process — that it is a wonder anything gets built in Canada. Stanley Klowsowski feels the new homes will impact the waterfront. The boat launch is already crowded and the town shouldn’t allow Quebec licence plates at the launch. Armsden said township staff is to prevent large boats from launching at the site, but that it will be looked into further. Ralph Pedley said there are no rocks in place to deter large boats. He would also like to see a children’s play centre at the water access on Mill Ridge. Felhaver said there are fewer boats on the river every year, and little traffic now. Developers are usually in full control of timelines, Howarth said in response to a question. A draft approval could be given this winter, leaving three years to complete the subdivision. They also must abide by the township’s noise bylaw, which was a concern to Potvin.

MP Gallant hosts large crowd for tax meeting DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
“It’s insulting. They want to set tax collectors loose on our small businesses.” She said the passive income practice “is the most controversial” because it could lead to $27 billion more in tax revenue for government coffers. It would be tantamount to “double taxation” on the same savings. Or, about 73 per cent of total investment income would be taxed. “Government wants the money now because Justin Trudeau wants to spend it now,” she said. “And with capital gains, all this is on top of all the other taxes.” A group called Canadians for Tax Fairness has more than 14,000 signatures in support of the proposed tax reforms. They point to three “myths” critics are spreading. The first myth is the so-called attack on the middle class, according to the group. To noticeably benefit from the tax advantages (which they call “loopholes”), someone would need to earn at least $150,000 per year. The average Cana-

Canadians across the country are obviously very concerned Annual General Meeting
A group of about 150 people, in a line that stretched into the parking lot, attended a meeting over proposed small business tax changes. Hosted by Conservative MP Cheryl Gallant at the Cobden Agricultural Recreation Hall on Sept. 28, the meeting dealt primarily with effects on farm operators, some of who have joined forces across Canada with doctors. “Owners of small businesses will take a big hit,” Gallant said, “because of this sneaky tax grab.” The Liberal government has floated the potential changes for weeks on end, and has received pushback from various sectors. Many observers believe adjustments will be made in specific areas. Even finance minister Bill Morneau got a tongue lashing during a recent tax reform meeting in his riding. Folks at the Cobden meeting were considerably less heated, interested more in the facts and likely adjustments made prior to the reforms passing into law. Gallant was joined by two guests who attended other Conservative meetings in the region. Tom Kent worked at Revenue Canada and Chuck Rotenburg taught income tax law at the University of Ottawa and Carleton University. They zeroed in on three practices the Liberal government is proposing to end: Photos by Derek Dunn/Metroland • Income sprinkling diverts income Participants in a town hall meeting over federal changes to the tax system wait their turn from high earners to a family member to get inside the Cobden Agricultural Recreation Hall on Sept. 28. with lower personal tax rates; • Passive investments funded from Town hall meeting after-tax active business earnings; host MPP Cheryl Gal• Capital gains conversion from prilant addresses the vate corporation’s regular income for crowd while speakers, lower tax rates and limit access to the Tom Kent who worked lifetime capital gain exemption. at Revenue Canada The example provided for income and Chuck Rotenburg, sprinkling involves a part-time nurse who does the bookkeeping for her who taught income family farm. Accused triple murderer was seeking revenge BRIER DODGE brier.dodge@metroland.com
Basil Borutski was seeking revenge when he went on a morning spree, killing three women he believed wronged him, Crown attorney Jeff Richardson alleged during his opening address on Oct. 4 at the Ottawa courthouse. The 59-year-old is charged in the Upper Ottawa Valley deaths of three women: 36-year-old Anastasia Kuzyk of Wilno; Nathalie Warmerdam, 48, of Bonnechere Valley and 66-year-old Carol Culleton of North Gower. During the opening address of what has been predicted to be a 17-week trial, Richardson said Borutski felt that the justice system was against him and took matters into his own hands. He’d been previously charged with matters relating to two of the victims as well as a son of one of the victims. Richardson told the jury that for the length of the trial, they are acting as residents of Renfrew County, describing the

ment confessing to the murders that was expected to be presented in court on Oct. 5. “This trial is not a whodunnit,” Richardson said. “For Basil, these murders are all about justice. His kind of justice (against these women) for using what Basil says is a corrupt justice system against him.” He said that Borutski thought up the plan, then in the span of a couple hours executed his revenge plot to kill the three women he felt wronged him. Borutski has chosen not to participate in the trial thus far, refusing to stand when asked or respond to any questions — even when asked what his plea was. He also has not hired a lawyer, so is representing himself, with a court ordered “friend of the court” there to act when needed. Justice Robert Maranger instructed the jury “don’t try and guess why he has no lawyer, and why he is not participating,” reminding them the onus is on the Crown to prove that Borutski is guilty, not the other way around. The trial is ongoing, and expected to last 17 weeks.

OPINION
Connected to your community
Break the silence Talking about child abuse is difficult. However, the fact that one in five kids are subject to physical or sexual violence before the age of 18 means it’s a conversation that needs to happen in our communities. Many children who experience violence also live without access to a quality education or health care services, live in an unsafe home, or have parents facing unemployment. Family Children Services Renfrew County, the Phoenix Centre for Children and Families and Algonquin College Waterfront Campus partnered to launch the annual Purple Ribbon Campaign, which runs throughout the months of October. Every October, Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies (OACAS) and Children’s Aid Societies raise awareness about how to identify and help prevent child abuse. Among the key goals of the campaign is to educate the public and key partners about how calling a Children’s Aid Society (CAS) is one of the most effective ways to prevent child abuse. As part of this campaign OACAS and member CASs work closely with school boards, schools, and community partners on a provincial Dress Purple Day. The official Dress Purple Day will take place at schools and agencies this year on Oct. 24 and everyone is encouraged to participate.
While both men and women are perpetrators of violence against children, close to 90 per cent of all violence against children is perpetrated by men. Michael Coteau, MPP for Don Valley East and Ontario Minister of Children and Youth Services found a unique way to raise awareness of the issue. This October, Coteau painted one of his nails to participate in Polished Man, a campaign that encourages men to paint one of their five nails with nail polish to represent the one in five kids who are subject to physical or sexual violence before the age of 18. “The nail polish triggers a conversation, which leads to a question, and ultimately the difficult conversation of child abuse and what we can do to combat it,” says Coteau’s office. Local events include a paint night being held Oct. 19 at Rocky Mountain House in Renfrew. And while it’s great to talk about and recognize the issue of child abuse in October it’s important to keep the conversation going all year long. T-shirts supporting the campaign, bearing the slogan #iBREAKthesilence, are available for sale at the Family and Children’s Services offices. For more information on the campaign and various events taking place this month visit ‘Purple Ribbon Campaign Renfrew County’ on Facebook and commit to help.
Local family health team helps patients with memory troubles ARNPRIOR AND DISTRICT FAMILY HEALTH TEAM
“Mom’s spaghetti doesn’t taste like it used to!” “I keep forgetting where I put my keys!” “Dad keeps repeating himself!” These are common statements heard by health providers at the Arnprior and District Family Health Team (ADFHT) from patients and their families who are wondering if they (or a family member) are beginning to have memory changes. Most people come to their health providers wanting to know what the difference is between normal memory changes, and the warning signs

of more worrisome memory problems in our aging population. We are happy to provide care that can address this concern. Since 2013, the ADFHT has offered the ‘Linda Lee Memory Clinic Program’. This Memory Clinic Program has been designed to assess people who are concerned about their memory. Our team is comprised of a physician, social worker, pharmacist, nurses and a representative from the Alzheimer’s Society. Each member of the team plays an important role in evaluating the patient’s cognitive health. What can someone expect at a memory clinic visit?
During a Memory Clinic visit, the patient and family member/support person will be asked questions about the patient’s medical history, social background and how they are managing life on a day-to-day basis. The patient will go through a few memory exercises and have their blood pressure checked. As part of the assessment, sometimes further testing like blood work, electrocardiogram or imaging of the brain is needed to rule out other causes that might be affecting memory. Our social worker helps with planning for the future, and caregiver burnout. We collaborate with the patient and family as part of the same

Braeside dancer steps into banner year DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
It was something of a stepping out year for a young Braeside dancer. Addison Felhaver placed high in numerous step dancing competitions around the province this summer. The Grade 4 student at St. Joseph Catholic School most recently won the nineyear-old and under category at the Metcalfe Fiddle and Step Dancing competition, held in conjunction with the annual fair. She finished near the top in competitions in Bobcaygeon, Ottawa, Richmond, Donnybrook, and Tavistock. Her style is called the Ottawa Valley Step Dancing, which is a blend of Irish and others. She is judged on timing, difficulty of steps, and showmanship (including facial expression). However, when it came time for the big one – the 42nd Annual Pembroke Old Time Fiddle and Step Dancing Championships – Addison dug a little deeper and came up with the win. “She keeps us very proud, very happy,” said Kyle, her father and renowned Ottawa Valley fiddler. “It’s always nice to keep the tradition
rolling.” Addison is following in the footsteps of her mother Becky Reid (also her teacher and choreographer) and grandmother Debbie. Kyle said when the three generations were called on stage and started dancing that Labour Day weekend, the Pembroke crowd of about 2,000 were overjoyed. Her junior group also did well. Addison, Ali Devries of Renfrew and Bennett Van Barr of Kinburn finished second in their category. Addison is staying grounded about her success. She is never nervous on stage, and is also constantly dancing at home. It is one of the ways she expresses herself. “I don’t get worried. It’s for fun,” she said. Asked if she plans to become a big famous dancer in New York, and she quickly cuts off the image. “No. Police officer,” Addison said, matterof-factly. “I like saving the world and helping people.” That is the distant future. For now she is content helping her father’s band (which includes his father Dave and brother Josh) at various gigs in the area. Kyle often plays fiddle during
her competitions. This year’s reel was Maids of Castlebar. Her mom will help select a new one, and a new routine, this winter. She enters the 12 and under category next season. They practice often on Wednesdays with Addison doing more on her own throughout the week.
She is a busy girl. Addison is also a gymnast, finishing fourth at the nationals and second in the provincials. Piano lessons are squeezed in somewhere, and now she has taken on judo. “We don’t have to tear her away from the video games, put it that way,” Kyle said. “She’s fairly active and keeps us active.”
Washboard Hank live in Braeside On Friday, Oct. 20, Ottawa Valley residents are in for a treat and maybe even a trick or two as McNab/Braeside Township presents recording artist, Washboard Hank, live in Braeside for a free concert. Doors open at 6 and Hank is due on stage at 8 p.m. with his unique sound of country and folk. The venue is outdoors at the new Braeside Works depot off River Road in the heart of Braeside across from Robbins and the facility offers the capability to go inside in case of adverse weather conditions. The event is labelled a ‘dirt dance’ after the very popular events held in the village of Braeside a couple decades ago and proceeds will go directly to new rinkboards for the outdoor rink next door at 138 Sarah Street. If you’ve never witnessed a Washboard Hank show, it’s truly a must see! Hank has performed with Canadian music’s royalty, including Blue Rodeo and Stompin’ Tom Connors. His energy
and unique sound guarantees to have the audience in awe as he whacks bells and honks horns in a flurry of activity, all while making amazing music with his trademark washboard. He’s even promising to break out something he’s labelled as his “fallopian tuba.” Yes, it will be a night to remember and there’s no charge for admission, so please do join us! Concert goers are reminded to wear a Halloween costume to be eligible for some great prizes and bring your dancing shoes because there’ll be some dance tunes to strut to throughout the evening as well. There will be some kids attractions and activities as well so the night is very suitable for the whole family in which to take part. The best part is, any funds raised will go directly to the Braeside rinkboard upgrade fund. More information is available by calling Karla at the township office recreation department at 613-623-5756 or e-mail kblemkie@ mcnabbraeside.com

Opposition mounts to radioactive waste near Ottawa River Letter sent to prime minister
However, the number of groups and individuals opposed to a planned radioactive waste disposal facility near the Ottawa River continues to mount. They say the nation’s DEREK DUNN capital is the very place to see how not to do derek.dunn@metroland.com decommissioning. A recent letter to Prime Minister Justin Experts from around the world met in Ottawa last Trudeau by 35 scientists, doctors, elected ofweek, Oct. 3-5, to discuss decommissioning and dismanficials, and leaders of public interest groups tling nuclear facilities. and First Nations, urges him to “stand up for the health and safety of Canadians” by suspending what opponents call a giant surface mound about a kilometre from the river. Multinational corporations have formed Canadian National Energy Alliance to build the disposal facility in Chalk River. It would house contaminated materials from more than 100 buildings on the nuclear laboratories site. It would also contain a small volume of mixed waste from offsite sources. For 90 years there has been nuclear activity on the shores of the Ottawa, with no solution in place for permanently safeguardFriday, Oct. 20 - $10.00/person ing the radioactive waste that is continuously generated.

The five-storey high mound would contain mostly low-level waste, starting in 2020, taking up to 1 million cubic metres of waste by 2070. However, groups like Ottawa Riverkeeper and Concerned Citizens of Renfrew County and Area, worry about leachate from the site making its way into the drinking water for 1 million people. Proponents say leachate happens when rain and snow make contact with the waste. Once the facility is capped, there will be no contact. Arnprior Mayor David Reid hasn’t signed on with any opponents, saying the issues at play are outside the expertise of town officials. He is confident the proper authorities, using due diligence, will ensure the safety of people living downstream. “The reality is only a few people understand; these are very technical issues,” Reid said. McNab/Braeside Coun. Mark MacKenzie, a former Green Party of Canada president, has attended several meetings on the

topic. He has also looked closely at the issues involved. “I’ve got a lot of concerns about it,” MacKenzie said. “That it’s not deep underground tops the list.” He said by calling it a “near surface” facility, the alliance is attempting to deceive. The project also doesn’t conform to international standards, he added. And that while only one per cent of the waste is considered of medium level, it will persist for hundreds of thousands of years. “Any percentage above ground that is supposed to be underground is too much.” The landfill-grade liner proposed is also a concern, he said. It will eventually break down. Then there are the players involved: SNCLavalin is in court for fraud and corruption; others are British and U.S., hence “not here for the long haul,” MacKenzie said. He said nuclear waste is a Government of Canada problem, not for private corporations. “I’m not convinced these companies have the long-term interest of the Canadian public in mind.”

Alpaca Day
These three seem bosom buddies wondering why all the people are watching them. It was open house day at Braeside’s Ballintotas Alpacas on Sept. 23. It’s her first experience with alpacas, but Bria Katsoulis’ first impression is that “he’s cute.” She was among those who took part in Ballintotas Alpacas’ open house at the Braeside farm.

What kind of wheel drive do you want? Choosing a vehicle based on wheel drive Several factors are considered before drivers purchase new vehicles. Wheel drive may not be the first such factor to come to mind, but it can be an important consideration when car shopping. Despite the considerable rise in popularity of sport utility vehicles, automotive expert Edmunds says most passenger cars sold in the United States today use a twowheel-drive system. With options such as 4WD, AWD, FWD and RWD, consumers should understand the differences of each type of drive in order to make the most informed decision.
Apart from passenger seating, horsepower and color, wheel drive should be a consideration when car shopping.
Light the way for safer nighttime driving (MS) — Few drivers may understand the importance of maintaining their vehicles’ headlights, and just how compromised they and their passengers might be when driving with old, dimming or foggy headlamps. Headlight bulbs don’t just burn out overnight. As bulbs age, their light output gradually reduces due to use and factors such as humidity, electrical resistance and filament fa-
tigue. Drivers concerned about the efficacy of their headlight bulbs can take steps to improve their visibility when driving at night. • Accept your own vulnerability. The human eye is not adapted for nocturnal vision. • Learn to recognize headlamp clouding. Clouded headlamps often appear hazed and yellow and reduce headlight output considerably. • Restore clouded headlamps.
Clouded headlamps do not necessarily need to be replaced. • Drivers whose vehicles are equipped with standard halogen headlights may be surprised to learn that such lights typically begin to break down within two to three years of installation, during Front-wheel drive which time light output might be The National Motorists Association reduced by as much as 30 percent. More information is at www. states that front-wheel drive, which has become ubiquitous in cars produced tophilips.com/automotive.

Rear-wheel drive With rear-wheel drive, the power goes to the back wheels to drive the vehicle. This used to be the system of choice because RWD systems were relatively easy to manufacture, offers Kelly Blue Book. RWD is the choice for many trucks because added load can offer additional traction in the back. Furthermore, rearwheel drive is coveted for sporty vehicles and luxury cars. That’s because, as vehicles accelerate the weight is transferred to the rear wheel, enhancing traction and further acceleration. This drive also distributes weight more evenly, so cornering and handling is better.
Glen’s
day, is cheaper to design and build than RWD. Fewer parts mean the drivetrain is easier to install. It is also less heavy than others, helping vehicles to be lighter and consume less fuel. In rain and snow, FWD has excellent traction, so it’s an asset under poor weather conditions. Front-wheel drive vehicles are not prized for their handling because the front wheels have to put power to the ground and steer the car. Furthermore, unlike RWD, which is more rugged and durable, FWD is more fragile. 4-wheel-drive & All-wheel-drive 4WD is designed for rugged, off-road applications and AWD is for pavement driving. Pure 4WD is good for low-traction situations off of pavement, where additional grip is needed. In some 4WD vehicles, this drive needs to be engaged through a transfer switch. In such automobiles, the vehicle operates in FWD or RWD until that switch is engaged. All-wheel-drive provides the best of FWD, RWD and pure 4WD systems. The main advantage is excellent traction on both dry pavement and in poor weather. Some AWD vehicles may be able to go off-roading as well. Potential disadvantages to AWD include cost, vehicle weight and, because there are more components in AWD, more parts can fail and require servicing. AWD typically comes in partand full-time versions. Choosing a wheel drive requires an understanding of how one plans to use the vehicle and which attributes are most important.

Mystery relative Ethel unexpectedly cuts short her lengthy visit Ethel was just one of the many people who came to visit the farm in Northcote, and no one was ever sure how she was connected to the family. The first time she came, suitcase in hand, Father said he never saw her before in his life. And certainly Mother, who hadn’t been on the farm that long, didn’t know who she was either. However, she came bag and baggage one day in the early Fall, claiming to be related on Father’s side of the family. She wasn’t about to give particulars, just saying, “we’re kin you know...and we go way back.” Ethel claimed to live in Pembroke. But Father said he was pretty sure he didn’t have any relatives there. However, none of that seemed to matter. Ethel was here, and she planned on staying. I was delighted. I loved company. The only problem was my sister Audrey and I had to give up our bed, and sleep on the creton couch in the kitchen. It was too narrow to sleep side by side, so we had to sleep foot to foot, which didn’t please Audrey one bit. It was soon pretty obvious to everyone Ethel hadn’t spent much time on a farm before coming out to Northcote. It was a warm day for Fall, and Mother had the kitchen window wide
open, looking out onto the grape arbour. When we sat down for supper, Ethel wondered what that strong smell was. We all looked at Father. He took his merry time to reply, chewing what he had in his mouth first. “That’s plain manure. We spread it out on the fields. What did you say your name was again?” “It’s Ethel, as you well know, Albert. And does that smell go away?” Father said, “Yes, when the snow comes.” Ethel just picked at her food, and more than once took her hanky out of her sleeve and covered her nose, pretending to wipe. And then there was the question of the Gerry pot under her bed. She had two choices, use it when the need arose during the night, or pick her way downstairs, out through the summer kitchen and over to the outhouse. She told Mother she couldn’t imagine anyone not having a bathroom with a flush-toilet. Of course, she also commented on the old copy of Eaton’s catalogue that hung from a nail inside the outhouse. Mother told Ethel it took some getting used to when she moved from New York too, which didn’t help the situation one bit!

Father blew smoke out of his pipe, pushed his straw hat to the back of his head, and said, “I knew that old bird would be useful some day. Even the turkey hens will have nothing to do with him. And he must have figured out how to open the pen gate all on his own.” And he threw back his head and laughed. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Ben Stein and his daughter Hannah. Ben is the great-nephew of Charles Macnamara. The Macnamara family was very well-known in the Arnprior area in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Charles Macnamara, among other things, was an amateur entomologist historian and field naturalist and contributed articles to various publications throughout his lifetime. Today, the residents of Arnprior can enjoy the Macnamara trials in his memory. The Stein/Macnamara family last year kindly donated the family’s grand piano to the church which continues to give such joy to the congregation every Sunday and on special occasions. A free-will offering will be accepted. Refreshments to follow in the church hall after the concert.

PALUBISKI, Steven Benedict Born January 25, 1973 at Peel Memorial, Brampton and died Tuesday, September 26,2017 at Etobicoke General, Toronto. Son of Benedict (Renfrew) and Bonnie (nee Thompson) Palubiski (Mount Forest) and brother of John and David Palubiski of Orangeville. Predeceased by grandparents Leo and Genevieve (nee Sernoskie) Palubiski of Killaloe, Grandma June (nee Gilkes) Thompson/ McIntyre of Dundalk. He will be greatly missed by his Grandpa Robert Thompson in Flesherton and aunts, uncles, cousins and friends too numerous to mention from coast to coast and beyond. Steven attended St. Peter’s and St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Schools in Orangeville and after a move to Laurel, attended and graduated in June of 1991 from Centre Dufferin District High school, Shelburne. Then off to Kemptville College (September /91 to June/92) for a cooking / management program. Steven was a large man with a giant heart. He loved to make people laugh. Always had a joke or riddle. He kept people on their toes with useless and sometimes useful trivia. Busy guy, who loved to bike, swim, play lacrosse, was a paper boy, in a bowling league, was a cub scout and a 4-H member in his teens of Amaranth. He loved playing cards- Magic the Gathering with his best friend Brian Buchanan of Laurel. Steven worked many places - Bun Basket Bakery, Orangeville; Millcroft Inn, Alton; Vinny’s Chuckwagon Restaurant, Killaloe and summers at the family business Bonnechere Bonnies, Round Lake, Ontario. Steven had many health issues over the years but managed to always be a positive influence to everyone he met. There will be a Celebration of Life held for Steven on Saturday, October 14, 2017 in Shelburne at the Shelburne Legion. Doors open at 2:00 p.m. There will be a meet and greet, followed by a short service from 3:30 p.m to 4:30 p.m. including open mic time for family and friends to share their experiences and fun times had with our Steve. At 5 p.m. there will be a fun supper of pizza, wings and roti, cake and refreshments, music and social time. Steven will be placed in the Wingham Cemetery near his Palubiski grandparents and Uncle Tom Palubiski at a later time. Donations may be made to Headwaters Health Care Centre - Bariatric Beds and Chairs. Come join us as we Celebrate Steven’s Life Saturday, October 14, 2017. Online condolences and donations may be made at www.imfunerals.com. Arrangements made to In Memoriam Funeral Services Inc.

Historical society revisits last county hanging BROMLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Was the murderer really guilty? Was the murder victim as innocent as believed? The trial that resulted in the last hanging in Renfrew County will be depicted by Bryan Hendry, former journalist and current senior policy adviser to the Chiefs of Ontario, at the next Bromley Historical Society meeting. It will take place on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. in the Old Town Hall, 498 Micksburg Rd., Osceola. Mr. Hendry’s talk will draw on his book, Reasonable Doubt, published in 1995. Hendry came across the story of the murder while looking through the archives FOR SALE

of The Eganville Leader, where he was working. It grabbed his attention and he read all the Renfrew County papers that covered the crime. Eventually, with assistance from then-Renfrew County MPP Sean Conway, he obtained permission to access the trial records in the Ontario Archives. “The murder case gripped the Valley in 1951,” Hendry said in a recent interview. “It was frontpage news across the province. It was the third murder of a taxi driver in the county in six years. And the lawyer for Lloyd Wise, the accused, was the well-known Renfrew lawyer James Maloney.” The post-war years, he went on to explain, were difficult times.

Men had returned from the war and many had difficulty finding employment. It was the post-Prohibition period when there was a lot of heavy drinking, yet liquor was not easily accessible. The murder victim, Lloyd Barber, was a taxi driver who frequently made runs for clients to the nearest liquor store, which at that time was in Eganville. He also had a reputation as being a womanizer. Barber was found in his bathroom in Killaloe on April 13, with lipstick on his shirt, evidence of recent sexual activity, and shallow cuts on his face and body. He had bled to death. rested in Hamilton. He was wearing one of Barber’s suits and had traded in Barber’s car to a used car lot in Hamilton. Maloney presented the argument that as Wise was a strapping man, he would have inflicted deeper cuts. He asserted that the wounds could have been inflicted by a woman. The jury found Wise guilty. Maloney appealed the decision but it was dismissed. Come and learn more about this fascinating story of Renfrew County history. Copies of Mr. Hendry’s book will be on sale. Everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be served following the presentation. FOR SALE

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Could this be the end of the fall colours?
Michael Runtz
In leaves, as the green veil of chlorophyll begins to break down, the colours hidden beneath (as in this Red Maple) are revealed.
Take a walk with Charles Macnamara KAREN RUNTZ
Lord of the Rings has walking trees. Game of Thrones has walking gods of ice. But did you know that Arnprior has its own real-life walking legends? One is a colony of rare “rock walkers” — walking ferns that live and breathe today. Another is field naturalist extraordinaire Charles “Charlie” Macnamara, who found and photographed the ferns in the early 1900s while walking from town to his cabin at Marshall’s Bay. Macnamara’s steps would have taken him in the vicinity of what is now the Macnamara Trail and where, in this century, its #6 stop marks these rare ferns over a large rock cavern favoured by porcupines. Imagine if you could meet “Charlie” and see many of the orchids, birds and insects that he spotted on his solitary journeys into the bush. And what if you had acclaimed naturalist, author and photographer Michael Runtz as your natural history guide? The opportunity is yours for the taking on Nov. 4 when the Macnamara Field Naturalists’ hold their 2017 banquet, featuring The Nature of Charles Macnamara. Members of the public are welcome to attend the event, which will be held at the Sand Point Golf Club. All tickets must be purchased in advance. “In my early years, I spent many happy hours attempting to track down the remarkable diversity of orchids and other fascinating forms
Charles Macnamara is one of Arnprior’s living legends and having Michael Runtz as a “guide” to his world will appeal to many Nov. 4 when the Macnamara Field Naturalists’ hold their 2017 banquet, featuring The Nature of Charles Macnamara.
With the arrival of autumn predictably come a number of natural history phenomena. Moose enter their breeding season, the rut. The night sky becomes crisp and clear, with the aurora borealis wildly dancing across it. And forests turn into visual extravaganzas with an explosion of fall colours. The Ottawa Valley and Algonquin Park are famous for this annual event, the third week of September usually bringing the peak of the colour. Brilliant red, orange, and yellow dominates when maples change their colour. Actually, reveal their colour might be more appropriate, for most of the brilliant fall hues are present in the leaves all summer long. They are unseen because they are hidden under the green mask of chlorophyll, the driver of the leaves’ sugarproducing factories. Most bright colours arise from pigments called carotenoids. Rich yellows and oranges of Sugar Maple leaves are due to carotenoids, as they are those colours in bananas and Yellow Warblers, and oranges and Baltimore Orioles. However, the colour red is different. Red leaves (and crimson and purple) are due to anthocyanin, a pigment manufactured when the chlorophyll begins to break down. Anthocyanin generates heat, which helps prolong the life of leaves as trees start reclaiming some of the sugars locked in their leaves that would otherwise be lost
of nature in the Arnprior area that Charles Macnamara had documented in his lavishly illustrated diaries,” says Runtz. Runtz will be joined by local archivist Laurie Dougherty, curator of the outstanding retrospective of Charles Macnamara available online at www. virtualmuseum.ca. Dougherty will present a portrait of Macnamara’s life by drawing from the extensive collection of images in the Charles Macnamara fonds at the Arnprior & McNab/ Braeside Archives. “I am very pleased to be able to provide a glimpse of Macnamara’s legacy through his writing and photographs which the family preserved and donated to the archives in 2002,” says Dougherty. Combined, they will provide a fascinating look at another time, a nearby place. Doors open at 5:30 and dinner is at 6 p.m. Ticket price of $35 per person applies up to midnight, Oct. 27, and payment must be received by that date. Tickets for children 11 and under are available for Is Proud to $15. when they fall to the ground. The colourful show is a product of the preparation that trees undergo in response to winter’s approach. To survive extremely cold temperatures, trees must become cold hardy. Cold hardiness involves changes to cellular structure, and the internal movement of water and sugars. These processes prevent ice from forming inside the cells, which would be fatal, while the formation of ice crystals between the cells is tolerated. After all of the modifications are complete, trees can survive temperatures as low as -80 ºC! It takes time for trees to become cold hardy. It is a two-stage process, the first being initiated by the change in photoperiod (the amount of light between sunrise and sunset). The second and final stage involves exposure to cold but not freezing temperatures (between 0ºC and 10ºC).
It is the second stage of acclimation that accelerates the appearance of leaf colour including anthocyanin reds. This year by early September male Red Maples were already turning brilliant red (female Red Maples turn yellow) and an extremely rich display of fall colours was forecast. But then things went awry. Unexpected extraordinarily hot, sunny, and dry conditions persisted for weeks. As a result, hardwood trees became heat and drought stressed, and in response, their leaves turned brown and began to fall off. In mere weeks we went from anticipating a spectacular show of fall colours to being witness to one of the most subdued displays seen in decades. With climate change, warmer conditions in the autumn are predicted to dominate in the years to come. Without cool temperatures to kick-start their preparation for winter, maples and other hardwoods may never again produce those rich colours that we have so very much enjoyed in years gone by. Could the disappearance of fall colours be the canary in a coalmine? The Nature email is mruntz@start. ca
