An OPP officer sits in his cruiser, blocking traffic to a five-vehicle pileup on Highway 17 near Arnprior on Oct. 7. One person is left dead. For weeks now, traffic has been reduced to one lane, causing delays of about a half hour. However, last Friday’s multi-vehicle crash happened during early morning thick fog. In April, a construction worker was killed near the same location. Charges in that case have yet to be laid. In February another significant accident occurred, again in the same area.

tigation late afternoon on the same day. The highway also remained closed. “In what world is a 14 per cent increase acceptable?” farm owner Brian Sheridan asked during the Oct. 4 council meeting in McNab-Braeside. “We can only grow so much, so where are we going to grow this extra taxation?” Ross Jeffery with Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) explained that a number of factors have caused the spike in property values. Commodity prices are up (but could stabilize before the 2020 notices). Farm sales in southern Ontario are increasing due to urban sprawl and low borrowing rates. That in turn has farmers buying cheaper land in Eastern Ontario, driving up demand. He also spoke at Horton council. “It’s the system,” Jeffery told the six members of the public. “It’s going to have to get passed on in food prices.” Others agreed food prices will continue to rise, but noted farmers don’t control price. And the 14 per cent increase is outpacing actual land sales. It is not the buildings on the land causing the price increase; Jeffery agreed. Some assistance to farm owners helps offset costs. Renting land to a farmer will get owners money from Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA). Properties eligible for the Farm Property Class Tax Rate Program are typically taxes at 25 per cent of the residential rate for municipal and education taxes. That didn’t placate at least one in attendance who said, “It’s a going-out-of-business strategy.” Then there is the political side. Jeffery explained that
municipalities in the County of Renfrew could lobby the regional government for a reduction. Coun. Heather Lang asked if all municipalities had to be on board with approaching county council. Jeffery wasn’t sure. “All it is doing is killing rural Ontario to feed Toronto,” Coun. Scott Brum said. Coun. Mark MacKenzie said there must be a better way to phase it in, just like with the new OPP formula. Deputy Mayor Brian Armsden called it a “money generator” for the province since it didn’t factor in massive hikes into long-term projections. “For the county this means unforeseen revenues,” he said, adding that it should bring down taxes. Few in the room appeared to hold out hope. One said, as soon as government gets extra money it finds a way to spend it. “Once they get their hands on money they won’t give it back.” Mayor Tom Peckett – who meets twice a year with the farm community – wants a separate meeting to gather input and discuss strategy. “I hear your frustration,” Peckett said. “I would like to talk with you fellows to see what can be done.” Jeffery said a reduction on the farm side would lead to an increase on the residential side. At least one farmer spoke of an admittedly “conspiracy theory” over farmers periodically getting hit with big increases but it is politically unpalatable to level it against the larger voting block of residential owners. Hydro bills are also going up, it was noted.

McNab-Braeside a step closer to building new municipal hall John Carter
John.carter@metroland.com
McNab-Braeside council has taken a major step toward the construction of a new municipal headquarters An almost $200,000 contract for architect services has been signed with Ventin Group for the preliminary design and contract tendering
for the construction of the new municipal office. The contract also includes the design of renovations of the Perneel building across Russett Drive from the municipal office. Council has determined that current municipal office needs to be replaced for a variety of reasons. Not only does the building have lack of space and heating/cooling problems,

it is sadly lacking when it comes to accessibility. With new provincial regulations, bringing it up to accessibility standards would be expensive. Council has also had to hire M. Sullivan and Son to remove mould from the municipal office. Council has debated how big the replacement township building should be, with Coun. Mark Mackenzie expressing concern that the plans are too grandiose with development in the township slower than expected. Other councillors have argued that the building needs to constructed to handle future growth. Public works director Ryan Frew told council that the Ventin Group will plan the building with an eye to energy efficiencies and durability. Coun. Heather Lang said she was impressed by the company’s background in designing municipal buildings across the country and its innovative plans. “We should get something that speaks to the history of our township,” she said.
The council is eyeing the Perneel building as the future site for a centrally-placed recreational complex for the township. However, that is likely at least 10 years away, councillors note. STEWART PARK PLANS
Alexander Stewart Provincial Park may finally be getting the profile it deserves. McNab-Braeside council has been encouraging the provincial government to publicize the many delights of the nature reserve situated northwest of the Russett Drive-Maple Bend Road intersection just east of the municipal office. A “unique collaborative effort” is underway involving the province, township and McNab Public School to make more use of the little-known park. The nature reserve is notable for its a hardwood forest of several species, including maple, American Beech, Basswood, Blue-Beech and Bur Oak trees. The township’s efforts are being spearheaded by its recreation com-
mittee and trails group. The plan involves eventually tying in activities at the park with increased use of the nearby Perneel Building. “This is great news,” said Coun. Heather Lang, who noted the recreation committee has called the potential of the project “very exciting.” The committee is anticipating plans will ready for approval by the end of this year. PROPERTY STANDARDS
Deputy Mayor Brian Armsden reported to council that the township’s revised property standards bylaw seems to be working well. He said policy encourages property-owners who are subject of complaints to work with the bylaw officer to clean up. While some complainants may want an “immediate fix,” the “slow and sure approach” does eventually result in the bylaw being followed, he said. “This has been an issue for years, so it’s good to see people working together to see some improvements without animosity,” he said.

Bruce Buie, left, Brian Patterson and Mike Steeves also run the donor card station. They once stamped a card from someone who donated 474 times. On this day, Sept. 14, two Rotarians gave blood for the first time. DEREK DUNN/METROLAND

Pleased with the public response to the township’s economic development survey, McNabBraeside council is disappointed its economic development committee is so dismissive of the results. Council decided at its Sept. 20 meeting to ask the committee to reconsider not using the survey results in its deliberations. It also agreed with Coun. Heather Lang that the results be sent to the area’s OMAFRA representative Kent Fitzhugh for his input. Lang said there were some good ideas to be gleaned from the answers. Deputy Mayor Brian Armsden agreed, noting that several hundred people responded, which council felt was a good number. However, it appears the committee doesn’t feel the response was strong enough to warrant scrutinizing the results further, he said. “They should work with what they got (from the survey) and keep moving on,” he said. Mayor Tom Peckett said there was “genuine interest” shown by residents in the survey, which is on the township website. He said he had expected a report on the results from the committee, which has come up with the survey. Coun. Mark Mackenzie suggested there is “tremendous information” in the results, although the response to many of the issues is
polarized. Some want development everywhere in the township, while others don’t want any more growth, he noted. Some respondents want more recreation and others no more spending on it, he added. “It’s hard to come up with a consensus.” Armsden said not all issues were split down the middle. It’s clear most people want development to be on larger lots and not in dense subdivisions,” he said. “And in recreation, people tend to want more programs and better facilities. We were elected to do that … it appears we’re on the right track. So we carry on and strive to get better. Take the negative comments as a chance to improve.” Lang said there were the usual complaints about the shape of township roads and buildings and lack of transparency, but council is addressing those with 10-year plans, town hall meetings and an improved website. “You always come up with conflicting opinions,” said Lang. “Despite the polarization, there is a wealth of information (in the responses).” Mackenzie noted the economic development committee appears to be down to the bare bones when it comes to members. The township has advertised for new members without response, but can try again, said CAO Lindsey Parkes.
Coyotes: A southeastern Ontario study Cheryl Morris-Putman
Mississippi Valley Field Naturalists
On Thursday, Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m., the Mississippi Valley Field Naturalists (MVFN) will host the second natural history presentation for the new season, reflecting the theme ‘Wild Creature Close-Ups.’ This event will take place in the Social Hall of Almonte United Church, 106 Elgin St., in Almonte. We will enter the mysterious world of the coyote (Canis latrans) and our ‘guide’ will be Mr. Tyler Wheeldon, Ph.D. Candidate at Trent University. He has entitled his presentation ‘Coyotes: A Southeastern Ontario Study.’ How many of us have heard the loud, piercing howl of a lone coyote or the yip-howls of a group of coyotes in the wild or suburban landscapes that this fascinating species of mammal occupies? Have you wondered if that elusive shadow that you “thought you saw out of the
corner of your eye” one night was perhaps a coyote exploring his urban territory? Have you been fortunate enough to see, from a distance, a pack of coyotes spread out single-file on a snow-laden field? If you have experienced any of these brief and elusive encounters, you have entered the world of the coyote. The coyote is one of the most versatile and vocal of wildlife species. It is noted for its ability to adapt to environments modified by humans. As human activity has altered the landscape, the coyote’s range has expanded. Please join us for this interesting and informative presentation. Refreshments and discussion will follow the talk. There is a non-member fee of $5. There will be no charge for youth 18 years and under. For further information, please contact MVFN’s Program Chair, Gretta Bradley at glbradley@icloud.com or visit mvfn. ca.

Rest in peace
PETER DEWOLF 1953-2016
We at Metroland Media were shocked and saddened to learn of the recent death of veteran Ottawa Valley journalist Peter DeWolf. A husband and father, 63-yearold DeWolf succumbed to liver cancer Oct. 4. DeWolf, who worked at My-FM Radio for the past almost 10 years, is also being remembered fondly as a veteran reporter for several area newspapers, including the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide. DeWolf was known for his hardhitting style. He asked the tough questions, wasn’t afraid to make waves, liked to stir the pot all qualities that made him a passionate and respected journalist. His memory will live on through his work, through the stories we fondly recall and through his family. Rest in peace, dear friend.
Let’s get the facts straight To the editor:
The people of the Braeside Ridge have concerns about their water. Not surprising, since without water, property has no value. Protecting this township resource is a township responsibility. The biggest threat to that water has been the Miller plans for the Braeside Quarry expansion and installation of a permanent asphalt plant. The result was a long community fight to allow reasonable expansion but keep a permanent asphalt plant out, protect property rights and most important of all, protect our water. This opposition resulted in a month long Ontario Municipal Board Hearing in March 2015. Fact #1: The township and the community organization, FACT-MB Inc. were on the same side fighting Miller at the hearing. Fact #2: The township went into that hearing armed with one expert and only one argument. ‘This asphalt plant and expansion is poor planning.’ The township had an excellent lawyer, but she was outgunned.

Fact #3: Miller had more than a dozen experts including three planners to argue that this was good planning and necessary to preserve as much important aggregate resource as possible. Miller had a previous township By-law on their side. Fact #4: Miller said the new township By-law was a knee jerk reaction with no planning, passed to appease their landowner voters. Fact #5: The planning argument became winnable only because FACT-MB witnesses told the board chair of the two court decisions of nuisance against an asphalt plant previously in this location. The board agreed with the two court decisions that this was a residential area and poor planning for a permanent asphalt plant. Fact #6: The township had hired no hydrogeologist; Miller had five water experts. FACT-MB’s hydrogeologist was the only water expert to fight the Miller team. Our expert argued to have our water tested for petroleum contaminants, to have the wetlands monitored, to protect
our aquifers. He said a permanent asphalt plant meant inevitable water contamination. He was effective! Fact #7: The township had hired no blasting expert. Two dangerous blasting accidents in the quarry had damaged property and endangered lives. FACT-MB hired a blasting expert with impeccable, international credentials to speak to the dangers of blasting too close to neighbours’ property. Fact #8: The township had hired no emissions expert, no one to say a permanent asphalt plant would destroy our clean air, emit cancercausing chemicals, and contaminate our water. FACT-MB brought in the best. Our expert, again with an international reputation, poked gaping holes in the Miller expert’s report. Fact #9: The township brought in not even one lay witness. FACTMB brought in over 30. Community members who had suffered from the temporary asphalt plant, had important stories to tell, concerns to express. Many of these people had to have witness statements prepared and filed in advance. The FACT team did all of that. Lay witnesses made a crucial impact on the board

chair. Fact #10: We won at OMB! But we are still fighting. Miller is still trying to get leave to appeal the OMB ruling. Even as recently as two weeks ago they submitted an amended application to try to get the ruling overturned. We said, ‘No!’ Fact #11: Miller was required to revise their site plan to reflect the board’s ruling. We had to check that they did it accurately. In fact they did not, requiring more rulings against Miller. They had attempted to make irrevocable changes such as completely stripping an area to be preserved, removing agreed upon berms and not testing water for contaminants. Fact #12: Then yet again FACT had to carefully examine the huge and intricate quarry site plans, finding out that important words had been eliminated: a five metre buffer of rock between our aquifers and the quarry floor could be removed with disastrous results to our water! Fact #13: The township waited until after FACT had done the work and then sent a letter to the board saying merely that they concurred with FACT’s findings. Fact #14: As Mayor Tom Peckett reminded us, the Township spent $164,000 of taxpayers’ money on OMB expenses; but all that money would have been wasted without our winning experts and lay witnesses. Fact #15: The township has never paid a cent for those winning expert witnesses. FACT is asking for only $30,000 for the remaining debt they have not yet been able to repay. Fact #16: Miller has recently ground up two enormous piles of old asphalt in the quarry, so finely ground, odours are like new asphalt being made. This asphalt sits directly on the quarry floor up gradient of the huge pond in the quarry made from our groundwater. There is no protective liner under this asphalt to catch runoff. When it rains, chemicals are washed from the asphalt into the water below. What is the township doing about this? Do they even know? Peckett has asked that people get the facts right before they write letters to the paper. These are the facts. Norma Moore FACT-MB Braeside

Warblers such as this young Yellow-rumped are normally thought of as insect-eaters but during migration many eat fruit including berries of Wild Raisin.
Migrating birds stop to refuel During this past Thanksgiving weekend, many of you travelled some distance to be with family and/or friends. For those who drove, you likely stopped to refill your car with gas at least once during your trip. Just as you must stop to refuel on longer trips, migrating birds also stop to refuel during their great journeys south. How often a bird stops on its trip south and the type of fuel it loads up with depends very much on the species. For example, shorebirds that travel from the Arctic to South America feed on mud-dwelling invertebrates such as Corophium (tiny amphipods) and worms. Remarkably, small shorebirds such as Semipalmated Sandpip-
ers fly from their nesting grounds to the Bay of Fundy and feast on Corophium for about 10 days. During that time their body weight doubles because of all of the fat they are accumulating. Fat is the fuel that powers their migration, which will eventually take them all the way to Suriname, South America. There are two remarkable aspects to this flight, which encompasses 4,650 kilometres. One is that it will take them no more than three days to complete it. The other is that the final leg of their journey south is flown non-stop. While small songbirds also travel great distances to reach wintering grounds, they seldom perform incredible marathons. Their journey is generally a
more leisurely one, composed of short segments spread out over weeks or even months, with each portion spanning up to 500 kilometres. These short trips generally take place at night because flying at night offers several advantages. It is safer because hawks, their main predators, are not active, they get better mileage because headwinds that make them burn up excessive amounts of their stored fuel are usually absent, and it is cooler, which is important because the massive flight muscles that power their flight generate a lot of heat, and the cool night air keeps the birds from overheating and dehydrating. After having flown a few hundred kilometres, While migrating sparrows usually eat seeds, this Lin- songbirds land to refuel. Insect-eaters such as warcoln’s Sparrow is feasting on Wild Raisin berries.
blers tend to search for caterpillars and other insects in the foliage of trees while seedeaters look for seeds either on the ground or still attached to a plant. They might spend several days at good feeding sites, which are known as stopovers, resting and replenishing their fat reserves. Regardless of their main diet, songbirds will eat other foods at stopovers. Currently, berries are popular items. Recently I observed eight species of birds eating Wild Raisin in Algonquin Park. These ranged from American Robins, birds that regularly eat fruit, to insect-eaters such as Yellow-rumped Warblers. Berries are rich in carbohydrates, and their consumption helps their diners gain sufficient fat to complete the next leg of their journey south. Likely some of you will be checking the scales to see if you gained any weight this past weekend. If you did and are upset with yourself, just think of those little sandpipers that double their weight in a mere ten days of feasting. That should make your gain of a pound or two rather insignificant, don’t you think? The Nature Number is 613-387-2503; email is mruntz@start.ca .

Gallagher elected president of Mississippi Mills taxpayers’ committee Ashley Kulp
akulp@metroland.com
The Pakenham, Ramsay, Almonte Taxpayers’ Action Committee (PRATAC) is up and running after electing its executive. More than 200 residents packed into the Almonte Civitan Hall Sept. 28 as the committee held its inaugural meeting, electing Brian Gallagher as its first president. Other members of the executive include: vicepresident Gerry Belisle; treasurer Ed Wilson; Almonte director Tracy Stimpson; Pakenham director Carmel McCann; Ramsay director Kevin Guerard; and directors at large, Lucie Lefebvre and Phil Wood. The one position remaining vacant is that of secretary. Gallagher was overwhelmed by the “tremendous” turnout. “We didn’t get to all of you, but this is just beyond our dreams,” he remarked. PRATAC was formed over the summer to serve as an advocacy group for all taxpayers in Mississippi Mills with a goal of being non-partisan, help influence public policies, bring to light concerns over tax increases, spending and accountability, ensure decisions made by council reflect the wishes of residents, as well as build positive relationships with municipal government and staff. “We will take no sides and we will demand transparency,” noted work-
ing group chairman Paul Haliburton in his opening remarks. “...We don’t want this to be confrontational,” Gallagher stressed. “We don’t want to be a confrontational group. We want council to talk to us. We want to be able to go to them and have some kind of interaction, a settlement of problems, a mutual gain type of thing...we don’t want to be confrontational like, at times, we think they’re confrontational with us.” Likening council meetings to “kangaroo court,” Gallagher hopes PRATAC can change council’s “lack of interest in our concerns.” Presenting Belisle’s comments as he was ill and unable to attend the meeting, Gallagher indicated there were four issues with prompted the formation of PRATAC - the heritage conservation district, Enerdu, sale of parkland and green space, as well as council’s handling of the election of a new councillor after the vacancy left by late Coun. Bernard Cameron. “We’ll need a strong, dependable and dedicated team of members who will speak authoritatively as an advocacy group on your behalf,” he stated. “PRATAC exists because municipal council is behaving against the will of the electorate. It’s time to come together as a determined citizenry...” Following the election of the exec-
utive by Wood, Wilson spoke about the financial shape of the new committee. He said a business account was opened at RBC Royal Bank on Sept. 7 with three signing authorities - Haliburton, Belisle and himself with two needed to sign all cheques. As of Sept. 28, the bank balance sits at $728.31. “That total will be added to by funds coming in this evening by individuals who have sold membership prior to this meeting and also from memberships that have been taken out this evening,” Wilson explained. When questioned on whether the committee was thinking about incorporation, Wilson said not at the moment, but Gallagher indicated that’s something for the executive to consider down the road. “We haven’t gotten to that point yet, but we are going to discuss that possibility...to register as a charity,” he said. The constitution was kept short to address key items,” Wilson said, adding that mission statement, goals, membership, duties of officers and board of directors are addressed. In order to ensure the board isn’t replaced at the same time, all members will serve two-year terms with the exception of the two directors at large and the Ramsay director, who will remain for a one-year term. As well, any member who “publicly
opposes the missions and goals” of PRATAC, according to the constitution, may have their membership revoked at any time by the board of directors. “If there is an item not addressed in the constitution, then normal accepted practices will apply,” Wilson stated. “As the organization gets established, if it is found that changes are needed in the constitution then they can always be made at the annual general meeting of the membership.” John Dalgity, who created the committee’s website (www.pratac.ca) and set up its Facebook page, then took the audience through a virtual tour of the site. “I’ve been involved in web technology for the last 20 years. I’ve had clients all over Canada, mostly in the health industry...so I have a fair bit of experience with this kind of thing,” he said. The site, which includes the constitution, code of conduct, mission statement of the group, as well as a news section where up-to-date information can be found. Residents can also purchase memberships, at $10 per person, online. During his presentation, Dalgity also provided the results of a questionnaire PRATAC recently conducted, the results of which have yet to be posted. Eighty-six people responded and the questions were
based on what residents believed were priority issues. Their responses: • Downtown heritage - 38 per cent • Gemmill Park upgrades - 57 per cent • Council attendance and code of conduct - 48 per cent • Sale of parks and green space 81 per cent • Road maintenance - 34 per cent • Pakenham water/sewer - majority were not aware of problem The overall performance of mayor and council as they reach the halfway mark of their term was also questioned, which rated a 67 per cent. “We’re not building stadiums or anything with the information we got, we just wanted a little bit of feedback on different issues and concerns,” Dalgity said. Questions were entertained from the crowd, with one focusing on fundraising events and how the committee would get funds. “Initially the idea on fundraising was if there was an issue that came up where we needed money, we would ask for donations,” he answered. “...Some who can afford to give a little extra, give it, others who can afford to give less, we’re happy with that. When we get to the point we need more, we’ll deal with that as it happens, but it will generally be on a donation type basis.” Visit www.pratac.ca for more.

Provincial Greens propose major animal rights, organ donation changes John Carter
John.carter@metroland.com
The Green Party of Ontario is updating its policy book this fall with several of the changes based on motions passed at its annual general meeting and policy convention earlier this year in Calabogie. Among the new policies approved by party members were an animal bill of rights and a presumed consent motion aimed at increasing the rate of organ donation. “There were a number of interesting policies put forward, said delegate Andrew West, who has run for the party provincially and federally in the West Carleton-Kanata area. Also delighted to be attending such a major function in his home riding was the party’s most recent candidate, Stefan Klietsch of the Renfrew area. West, who is the party’s attorney general critic, said the Greens are much more than a party concentrating on environmental issues, as many people see it. The convention branched into many different areas at the convention, he said. For instance, if elected, the party will enact an Animal Bill of Rights, he said. After passing that resolution at the convention, the party is work-
ing on develop the details so it can be approved at the 2017 party gettogether. He said the initiative was sparked by a Private Members Bill that would amend the Criminal Code to make certain animal abuses illegal. “While we support the intent of this Bill, it created opposition from groups representing anglers and farmers, West noted. “We plan to work with these and other organizations to develop a bill that truly protects animals from unnecessary abuse. He said he believes such legislation can be created striking a balance between protecting animals and not threatening the livelihoods of farmers and hunters. As for organ donation, the party is proposing that instead of the current ‘opt-in’ system, it be changed to an ‘opt-out’ system, meaning consent to organ donation is automatic unless a person registers their refusal. “The intent of this policy is to improve and save lives in Ontario, while still respecting individual and religious rights, explained West, who authored the policy’s wording. That type of system appears to be working well in Europe, he added. “This is an important policy, given that 246 Canadians died in 2013 while waiting for an organ trans-

Arrival of new rescue helicopters delights MP Canada’s aging Sea King Fleet of rescue helicopters has finally been replaced and Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant couldn’t be happier. Gallant, the vice-chair of the Standing Committee on National Defence, visited CFB Shearwater in Nova Scotia to see the new Cyclone helicopters recently. “I was pleased to see firsthand that the replacement our Conservative Government ordered for Sea Kings, the CH-148 Cyclone, are being delivered and training is underway,” said Gallant in a news release. “Mission accomplished.” Helicopters are stationed on our ships to detect and deter foreign submarine activity in Canadian waters. They are also used for search and rescue as well as catching drug runners “The Royal Canadian Navy is presently working with the manufacturer to ensure they will have all the features and equipment necessary to carry out their vital mission as a developmental project,” reported Gallant. She said the Conservative Government had new aircraft, the EH-101s, lined up for the Sea Kings in 1987. However, that contract was cancelled in 1994 by the Liberals, “leaving the Royal Canadian Navy with aging helicopters and no replacement in sight,” she said. SUBMITTED “It was our Conservative government that ensured the Maritime Helicopter Conservative defence committee members Cheryl Gallant, James Bezan (third from left) and Pierre Paul-Hus (second from right) at CFB Project is finally a reality.” Shearwater with a new CH-148 Cyclone helicopter.

St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church to hold piano dedication Oct. 16 A piece of Arnprior’s history has found a new home. A piano that dates back to the late 19th century with ties to one of Arnprior most influential families, will have its keys struck by the talented musical staff at a church, that has welcomed worshippers for more than 150 years. A baby grand piano has been donated to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Arnprior by the Macnamara/Stein family. A piano recital will be held on Oct. 16 to celebrate and dedicate the piano at 3 p.m., the public is welcome to attend. The Macnamara family were very well known in the Arnprior area in the late 1800s and early 1900s. One member of the family was Charles Macnamara, who among other things, was an amateur entomologist historian and field naturalist and contributed articles to various publications throughout his lifetime. Today the residents of Arnprior can enjoy the Macnamara trails in his memory. Duncan and Marian, Charles Macnamara’s brother and sister, both sang and played the piano. Duncan played flute as well. Both likely sang at some point at the Daniel Street Presbyterian church. Duncan Macnamara died the same year that his daughter Jean
was born, in 1906. Jean played piano well enough in her teens to accompany the silent movies played at the O’Brien Theatre. Jean Cunningham lived and raised her family of three in Toronto, after marrying Franklin Cunningham. In her last years she returned to Arnprior, and her children and grandchildren would visit her there. Judith Hunter, née Cunningham, Jean’s daughter, taught children in Toronto. When Judith got her teaching degree, part of the requirement was the ability to sing and play piano. Jean’s other daughter Alison Stein nee Cunningham also played piano. Alison’s son Ben Stein kindly donated the piano to the church this year. Ben Stein, the great grandson of Duncan Macnamara and the greatnephew of Charles Macnamara, will be present for the recital to share some of his musical talents and talk about the history of the family. At Christmas-time the family would have a carol sing with the piano. Jean would invite her friends the Wolffs, and their son Karl would play as we all sang. When Ben’s parents Alison and David Stein moved to Arnprior, they continued the carol singing tradition.

Harold Grail in broomball photo One more time for the record. There is one more change to the list of names of players in the team photograph of the Arnprior championship broomball team from the 1960s submitted by Jennifer Smith. The photograph that ran in the Sept. 1 Chronicle-Guide indicated the player in the middle of the back row behind trophy holder Nick Smith was Norbert Lapierre. No so, says Jennifer Hiller. She identifies the player as her father Harold Grail. The Arnprior Smiths Construction broomball team also included Jimmy Guillemette, Harry Rice, George Courschene, Gerry Macklin, Joe Ladourette, Phil Poole, Bert Cavers, Lloyd Runtz, Bruce Desarmia, Lindon Jump and Richard Dorion.

St. Joe’s raises $715 in Terry Fox run St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Arnprior participated in the Terry Fox run on Thursday, Sept. 29. The school held an assembly to share Terry’s story and a cancer survivor’s story and also included a motivational song to start the run. The staff and students came together in prayer to honour those battling cancer and those who we’ve lost.
The kindergarten students ran, hopped and skipped around the school yard and the primary, junior intermediate students ran at the Arnprior District High School track. The generous students and parents donated a whopping $715 for the Terry Fox Foundation. Thank you to everyone who participated and donated as well as ADHS for the use of their track.

The family of the late Margaret Brohart would like to convey our sincere thanks for all the expressions of love and support we received during this very difficult time. Thank you to our families, neighbours, and friends for generously giving food, flowers, cards, phone calls and visits and for the donations in honour of Margaret. We express our gratitude to Dr. Buxton and Davies for their care and professionalism towards Margaret, as well as the home care nursing staff and nurses on second floor at R.V.H. Thanks to Russell Wardell for the beautiful service and to Freiman Virgin and Hank Schaly for the music, also to the U.C.W. for the lovely lunch that was provided. We sincerely appreciate McPhail & Perkins Funeral Home, Matt Brydges and his staff, for being compassionate and making sure our needs were met with dignity and respect. Thank you to her Pallbearers, Mom would have been proud to have her 7 grandsons and 1 great grandson walk her to her final resting place with grace and dignity. And to granddaughers Courtney and Hilary for the heartfelt eulogy that was beautiful and touching, she would have loved your tribute. Thanks also to the ladies for the supper between wakes, you did a great job. We miss mom terribly, we do appreciate your ongoing hugs, stories, and reminder of mom. Peter passed away at the Ottawa General Hospital while surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday evening, October 4th, 2016 following a very brief illness. He was 63. Beloved and cherished husband of Val (nee Jordan). Dearly loved “Dad” of Darcy Legree (Kristina) of Carleton Place; Kelly Cranston (Rod) of Arnprior and Robert DeWolf of Ottawa. He will be missed. Family and friends were invited to pay their respects during visitation at Glad Tidings Pentecostal Church, 116 Baskin Drive West, Arnprior on Saturday, October 8th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and again on Thanksgiving Sunday afternoon, October 9th from 12:30 until 1:15. In Memory of our Mother and Wife October 13 2014 You can shed tears that she is gone or you can smile because she has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that she’ll come back or you can open your eyes and see all she’s left. Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her or you can be full of the love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember her and only that she’s gone or you can cherish her memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back or you can do what she’d want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us every day, Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed and very dear Always and Forever in our Hearts Mom Love Brian, Tracy, Michael Lisa, Patrick, Ryan, Jennifer Janet, Brian and Kimberly

In Loving Memory of
James (Jim) LeBlanc June 08 1922 - October 11 1991 25 years passed away Farewell, dear father, thy work is over Thy willing hands will toil no more, A loving father, kind and true, No one on earth we’ll find like you. The rolling stream of life rolls on, But still the vacant chair, Recalls the love, the voice, the smile, Of the one who once sat there. Lovingly Remembered Mike & Dianne
Walter Reed October 8, 1991 Mom it’s been 25 years since dad passed It’s amazing that all those years Have slipped away You know every time we think of him A tear still forms in our eye You are still with us You’re 92, he would be 93 You never replaced the love you shared. To this day you have 4 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, another coming He would loved to have watched, The little ones grow They are his legacy It is unfortunate they will never know This wonderful man. A veteran of WW11, shot down over France, Where he jumped out of a burning plane. Into the night sky captured and Taken prisoner for 2 years, Where he escaped and made his Way home to you. The rest is history. This was a great and humble man. It is up to us to keep his memory alive. Always loved – Always missed. Your Family

CLOUTHIER, MARC
Passed away peacefully at Renfrew Hospice of cancer on Tuesday October 4, 2016 in her 81st year. Beloved wife of Forrest Fraser, Renfrew, daughter of the late Karl and Anna Meisel of Germany. Survived by sister Gerta (Jakob) and brother Edgar (Late Emma) both of Germany. Rosemarie and Forrest were married at Zweibrucken West Germany in 1958 while Forrest was serving with RCAF at 3 fighter Wing Zweibrucken as part of Nato’s first line defense during the cold war. The Meisel family survived the bombing of their city which was 80 percent destroyed as the Americans dropped leaflets over the city to warn that the bombing was coming soon. Rosemarie also survived a severe case of rheumatic fever in Belleville Ontario, hospitalized for four months in 1963 and 1964. As a result of Forrest’s service with the RCAF, beside living in Germany and France and his employment with Motorola and our wondering ways after retirement. Also lived in Vancouver and Kelowna B.C. Edmonton and Calgary. In Alberta, Regina and Saskatoon, Sask, North Bay, Markham, Ottawa, Goderich, Belleville, Trenton, Elliot Lake, Pembroke, Arnprior and finally Renfrew Ontario. Also spent two years at Churchill Falls Labrador at The Hydro Electric project. We wish to thank Dr. Bruce Strader and the volunteers of Renfrew Hospice. Moving the Findlay Oval was a team effort It was time. There was a bite in the air. This was the day the Findlay Oval would be moved from the summer kitchen back into the house. It had been allowed to go out the night before after supper on Friday, so it would be well cooled off by the time it was moved. Being Saturday, the brothers were home from school, and it would take every hand to move the big stove back where it belonged. With any luck, the stove would be up and running in time for supper. Heaven forbid that Father didn’t have a full meal at the end of the day! Always, the stove was rolled in and out on logs, but Father had a better idea that year. He spent hours in the work shed building a platform on wheels and it was his intention to hoist the stove onto this trolley and slide it right into the kitchen. Of course, it would have to be lifted onto the trolley first. And I remembered how the brothers and Father struggled to get it onto the logs and then roll it into the summer kitchen. Father said it weighed more than two work horses put together. Everyone was in bad humour by the time it was all over. So the trolley, I hoped would work out just fine. The stove pipes had to be taken down first and it was my sister Audrey’s and my job to shake the soot out and make sure they were clean enough to attach back to the stove when it was back in the kitchen. I stayed well away from the summer kitchen when the lifting started. I couldn’t bear to see the red faces and the veins standing out in their necks, as they struggled with the load. Well! That move was different from all others! Father could be heard
Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK
swearing at Everett, who was yelling at Emerson, who was blaming young Earl. Someone, Father roared, had forgotten to empty the reservoir and as soon as the stove was tilted in the move, the water sloshed out and covered Father from his waist to the top of his work boots. To say he wasn’t happy was an understatement! So there sat the stove. Two legs on the trolley and the other two on the summer kitchen floor, with the water pouring out like a rushing river. I stood in the doorway and it was like watching a Hop-a-long Cassidy Movie. For a few minutes Father stood and looked at the water running down his front and the reservoir door hanging open. Emerson, Everett and Earl stood looking at Father for further instructions. I was amazed at how much water the reservoir could hold. With the toe of his work boot, Father maneuvered the braided rug that was close by, over to the pool of water on the floor. Of course, that only spread the water further and did nothing to sop up what can come out of the reservoir. He sent Earl in the for the rag bag. “And don’t bring one rag. Bring the whole bag,” he hollered. In the meantime, he was asking who had the job of emptying the water. Emerson pointed to Everett and Everett
pointed in the general direction of Earl going out the door for the rag bag, shaking his head and saying “not me.” Earl brought in what used to be an old flour bag pillow slip, now filled with pieces of old underwear, sweaters, and anything else that could no longer be considered usable. Father grabbed it and without taking one thing out of it, used the entire full bag as a mop. Mother would not be pleased and I knew the rags would have to be washed, dried and restored in the bag for further use. Finally, as much water as possible was wiped up, the stove heaved onto the trolley and moved back into the house. The pipes were put on. It took several hours to put everything back in order, a new fire lit, and supper put on the stove to cook. Father was as cross as a bear with a sore paw, the brothers were still accusing each other of failing to empty the reservoir and I was sitting in a corner of the kitchen pretending to read my newest book from the Renfrew Library. But I couldn’t help thinking of the night before when the whole house was getting ready for the big move and Mother, right in the middle of the chaos said, “I think Mary is old enough to help this year. She can empty the reservoir.” I was grateful Mother didn’t remember giving me the job and I reasoned owning up to it would just add more chaos to an already out-of-hand situation. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Go to https://www.smashwords.com and type MaryRCook for e-book purchase details, or if you would like a hard copy, please contact Mary at wick2@sympatico.ca.
This is a high paying career opportunity so EXPERIENCE is required for this position. Thank you in advance for your interest in the Urban Group. Arnprior and Renfrew.
