Award-winning marble returns home to Arnprior Marble from town outcrops appeared in first parliament buildings, numerous local buildings DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

An important piece of Arnprior geological heritage was quietly returned to town in mid October. It would come as a surprise to some that Arnprior had several marble quarry sites during most of the 19th century. The stone won international awards and was used in important buildings in the national capital, along with others from Arnprior to Kingston. It can be seen in cemeteries throughout Eastern Ontario. Local history buff David Forsyth is well aware of the significance of the marble, and in particular several slabs that comprised the doorway to the Tierney Block. Located in what is now an ice cream stand at the corner of Madawaska and John streets, the Tierney Block building was torn down after a fire in 1995. The marble entrance was shipped off to a bone yard; it was supposed to be broken down and sold as fireplace mantels or countertops. Thanks to Forsyth’s diligence, the pieces were found at Keystone Traditional Masonry on Ashton Station Road near Carleton Place. The owner, James Reid, agreed to sell the marble back to the municipality – following council’s approval - for the price he paid: $2,000. It was returned to Arnprior on Oct. 16. See MARBLE, page 2

Marble from Tierney Block could be displayed in park Continued from page 1

“I was amazed,” Forsyth said, when he first laid eyes on the Tierney Block marble. “Here I was looking at pieces of a building in the downtown from 1865 to 1995. It’s like finding a few bones or something that disappeared.” Recalling the railway station loss, Forsyth said Arnprior doesn’t always do a good job of retaining its history. He is pleased to know council wanted the marble. The question is what to do with it. Forsyth would like to see an archway built using the marble for one of the parks

in town. Reeve Walter Stack said it would make a fine entranceway to a new town hall. When Forsyth discussed repatriating the marble at a council meeting last summer, he explained billion-year-old “Grenville” marble underlies the town. There are two types: Dark Arnprior and Ottawa Valley. It has “beautiful” lines that made it unique, he said, and the craftsmanship of the high-polished final product was impressive. While it never had the pure whiteness of Michelangelo’s David, the local marble is much more dense than its Italian competitor. “It was prized internationally. It was the

stone to have at that time,” Forsyth said, pointing to the awards it received at conventions in Kingston (1859), Philadelphia (1876), and Paris (1878). Hence, between 1830 and 1890 a successful industry was carved out using sledgehammers and horsepower. No hydraulics. Quarry remnants can be spotted at some of the seven open pit locations: Bell Park, William Knowles Island (at the weir), Craig Street, Russell and Elgin streets, and the trestle bridge over the Madawaska River are all sites of exposed marble outcrops. Arnprior marble appeared in the first Parliament buildings, before the 1916 fire destroyed the Centre Block. It was in the House of Commons polished columns, floor tiles and fireplace fronts and mantles. And in the senate and parliamentary buildings, including Sir John. A. Macdonald’s office. Arnprior marble is also in William Lyon Mackenzie King’s cottage in Gatineau Park. In town, the marble can best be seen across from the site of the former Tierney building, at Scotiabank, Arnprior and District Museum, town hall, and Galilee Centre. Many other buildings and gravestones have the marble. It was even discovered in a downtown building undergoing renovations this summer. Forsyth suggested Arnprior marble is hiding in plain sight. “It’s probably one of the best kept secrets in Arnprior,” he said. The marble industry began to crumble when the U.S. levelled tariffs against the product, not unlike it does today against softwood lumber

The Tierney Block returned to Arnprior on Oct. 16 after years of being in Kingston. It is stored at Mark Nibourg’s Kenwood Centre. from Canada. But Forsyth said a business could possibly emerge if someone owned land with quality marble on it. It can be seen clearly along the latest stretch of Highway 17’s twinning. He envisions the museum selling marble paperweights, for instance. More important for him, though, is that history is being dusted off. Many area municipalities struggle to feature their geoheritage. Few can match Arnprior’s, he said. “I find history fascinating. And to find these objects hiding in plain view; to know it’s been right there all this time; and it’s never been questioned,” he said, “is quite something.”

Market considered a success in Arnprior DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

The weather didn’t always co-operate, and a few lessons were learned along the way, but all told it was a good first year for Arnprior’s Sunday Market. That was the message from Lindsay Wilson, the town’s marketing and economic development officer, to an advisory council. Between 200 and 300 people attended each week, with many returning. “I feel we did a pretty good job of keeping everybody organized, especially for a first year,” Wilson said. “We did learn a few things.” The wet spring with unprecedented flooding had a negative effect on vegetable crops. So supplies were limited early on at the John Street North locale. When summer hit, some afternoons proved too hot for some; attendance likely suffered. During the Oct. 16 community development advisory committee meeting, members learned that of a survey by the 24 seasonlong vendors, six daily vendors, and eight community service booths - sales were reported as ‘poor’ by 25 per cent of those surveyed, ‘average’ by 38 per cent, and ‘good’ by 36 per cent. Dollar amounts were given anonymously, but it is difficult to draw conclusions, she said. One sale for $250 isn’t the same as 200 sales adding up to $250. Wilson anticipates many vendors will return. Fourteen have said yes so far. Others have made inquires for next year.

The Arnprior Market ran Sundays on John Street for the first time this year and is being considered a success. Anecdotally, downtown businesses also saw a boost in revenue but there are no sales statistics yet, she added. Next year could see the Sunday Market extended from the current May 21 to Sept. 24, to include Thanksgiving weekend. Many were satisfied with the 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. hours of operation. Another change could see the Arnprior and District Museum extend its hours; opening an hour earlier at 10 a.m. Wilson said washroom facilities would be helpful earlier in the morning, particularly for vendors who drive from an hour away to start setting up at 7 a.m. She also thanked Lumbertown Ale House for kindly allowing market goers to use their facilities.

Say goodbye to shoveling the driveway and cleaning snow and ice off of your car this winter. We’ve built Almonte’s only underground parking garage for your convenience. You’ve Earned It.

Some attendees asked that tables and chairs be set up on the street. Wilson said that could be a problem should the fire department need to pass through. However, signage will likely be more permanent next year. They were vandalized early in the season. Children’s activities, theme days, and more buskers could appear. Loud generators will not be allowed again next year, but power blocks will. Committee member Darrel O’Shaughnessy enjoyed attending the market and thanked Wilson for overseeing it. “Just to walk down there on a Sunday; it was pretty cool,” O’Shaughnessy said. “You did a good job there, Lindsay.”

Services for Seniors across Arnprior Regional Health

Arnprior and area is one of the fastest growing populations in Eastern Ontario with a population of 30,000 of which 2,414 (6.5%) are over the age of 75. ARH, along with our seniors, municipalities, County, the Champlain LHIN, and the Ministry of Health and Long-term care, are working together to ensure that seniors are provided with services that will allow them to age at home safely.

Home First

It is the Home First philosophy that “every patient admitted to the hospital should expect to be discharged home at the end of the acute period of care.” Following this philosophy, our Complex Continuing Care Unit provides short term reconditioning care readying the patient to leave the hospital.

Staff is committed to helping these patients to ensure they are successful in their return home. This is done through exercises and recreational activities which will increase the patient’s strength and independence. When a patient returns home they need to be able to function as they did prior to their hospital stay. Michelle Johnston provides some assistance to a patient from sitting to standing with a walker.

Geriatric Emergency Medicine An important clinical role in the ARH Emergency Department is the Geriatric Emergency Management (GEM) Nurse Specialist.

Seniors represent as many as 30% of the patients seen in emergency departments across the province. Illness complexity, hospital admission rates, lengths of stay and risk of functional decline are also highest for seniors. ED visits can be especially concerning for seniors, as they fear the loss of independence, health and well-being. Watermain break cause of latest drinking advisory DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

The Oct. 19 water advisory for one section of Arnprior was caused by a watermain break, according to town CAO Michael Wildman. A drinking water advisory was in place for all businesses in the Sullivan Industrial Park, excluding Pillar5, until it was called off on Oct. 23. It did not apply to any other areas in town. The municipality received several calls the evening before the ban, reporting a noticeable drop in water pressure in the Sullivan area, or east end of town. Staff began shutting down mains in several key areas before determining it was a watermain under the Madawaska River that has ruptured. “It is a primary feed for the water tower, which is why it was noticeable so quickly,” Wildman said at the start of the incident. “We had divers out this morning to locate and confirm the break. Right now they are working on a strategy.” It is repairable, he said, even though it is a “significant” break in that the watermain is an

important feeder. But it will be trickier to solve than digging under a road. Repairs could start as early as today. He had no timeline to offer at that point, whether days or weeks. Repair materials might have been difficult to source, which, he said, along with several factors made it impossible to determine. A few large manufacturers in the industrial park use large amounts of water in their processes. Nu-Tech Precision Metals, for instance. The Arnprior District Humane Society is nearby, but because it is on a well there are no negative effects. The town contacted all affected properties. Wildman said there have not been a lot of major complaints. The watermain is not at the end of its useful life, though is in the latter half. Granular work was done recently, but nothing more than regular maintenance work. The break has no connection to the townwide water advisory imposed in the summer of 2016. They are separate issues, he said.

The watermain under the Madawska River ruptured last week causing a water drinking advisory for the industrial park.

Carver Ron Hanniman had his pieces on display at a special exhibition at the new downtown Arnprior store, The Vintage Crate, on Oct. 7. It was the first showing of Hanniman’s work, which is not for sale, but created for use as gifts. His pieces in some cases take more than year to create and complete. His carvings have a very high level of detail – each feather is hand carved creating a very lifelike image of the bird. Hanniman studies the subject (birds) for months to understand their mannerisms – this is evident in his works – many are done in active poses – his attacking owl is a great example.

OPINION

Connected to your community

Delivering precious cargo With the recent arrival of National School Bus Safety Week, it is disconcerting to read OPP releases about there having been several recent reports of motorists failing to stop for flashing red lights. Although dash cams and similar devices are becoming more common and would help with efforts to investigate incidents and lay charges, that will not provide a quick fix for the ongoing problem associated with drivers who don’t seem to notice or care about how their behaviour is putting lives at risk. A fine of $400 plus six demerit points for a first conviction might, to some extent, serve as a deterrent. Having the fine doubled if the infraction occurs in a community safety zone might also help discourage drivers from taking the chance. Knowing that the local constabulary is probably making more of an effort at this time of year to enforce school bus rules of the road is also something motorists should consider. Unfortunately,

there can’t be a cruiser on every block during those weekday morning and afternoon pickup and drop-off periods. According to the Ontario School Bus Association, there are more than 18,000 professional drivers whose job it is to safeguard more than 825,000 elementary and secondary students — about two-fifths of the province’s total school population. Parents rely on those professionals to ensure that children are transported to and from their homes safely five times a week, 10 months a year. Apparently, it adds up to in excess of 2 million kilometres of driving every day. Is it too much for all the other drivers on the road to do their part by being aware of their surroundings and to stop when a school bus is flashing its red lights and extending its stop arm as youngsters await to climb aboard or exit the vehicle? It shouldn’t be. “Help keep our children safe,” note the OPP. “Pay attention!”

For some animals, showing age is a good thing MICHAEL RUNTZ

It will be two year before this young Cedar Waxwing acquires its red, name-giving, waxy adornments  on its wing feathers.

Nature’s Way

It seems our species is obsessed with aging. But not in the view that we look forward to it, rather in how we can avoid it. Plastic surgeons, beauticians, nutritionists, and others have become rich because of our desire to maintain a youthful appearance. Fortunately our wild neighbours have far more serious considerations to occupy their time. Their goals are straightforward: to find sufficient food, survive harsh environmental conditions, escape danger, and pass on their genes. None appear to have the desire and certainly the ability to retain their youthful appearance. While we try to hide our age, some animals want to reveal it. Cedar waxwings, a rather common bird that loves mountain-ash berries and other fruit, has name-giving, red adornments on a few of its wing feathers. But only those birds that are two years old or older sport them. Ring-billed gulls, those white rascals that pester people at chip wagons, take three years to gain their immaculate white plumage and black wing tips with white pearls. Bull moose do not display impressive antlers in their first year of life; most take at least six years before their headgear brings gasps of admiration from human viewers. So why do some animals go through a change in appearance to reflect their age? The reason involves their chances of repro-

ducing. Many female animals prefer a mate who is mature rather than young. Older means that the individual was able to survive for more than one year, being able to find adequate food and survive environmental stresses during that time. Young males, especially those only one year old, haven’t proven themselves to be survivors and may well possess inferior genetic material that would be passed on to the female’s young. While moose may take up to 7 years to reveal their peak of maturity to discriminating females, most birds don’t live long and so maturity for them comes at an earlier age. One of our longest-lived birds is the Bald Eagle, which on average lives 20 years, with 38 years apparently being the record. This majestic bird usually does not acquire its contrasting white head and tail, and dark brown (nearly black) body plumage until its fifth year. It starts off with a blotchy brown and white plumage, and goes through a se-

ries of changes until its fourth year, when a white head and tail with dusky tones appear. In earlier plumages, young bald eagles are often mistaken for golden eagles, which are rare visitors to our area from mid-November until late winter. There is little size difference between the two, so the best way to tell them apart involves the golden nape of a golden eagle, as well is its smaller head and bill (half that of a bald eagle) and its habit of soaring on tilted wings (a dihedral) like a turkey vulture (balds soar on flat wings). If for some animals, baldness is a sign of maturity, perhaps there is hope for me yet! I will be speaking along with Laurie Dougherty about Charles Macnamara and local nature at the Macnamara Field Naturalists’ Club banquet on Nov. 4. Music lovers have a unique opportunity this Saturday, Oct. 28, as Arnprior resident Philip Candelaria brings his Guitars Alive Quartet to Grace St. Andrew’s Church in Arnprior for a special performance. “What I’m excited about and what I think people will really enjoy is it’s so eclectic,” said Candelaria, a classical guitarist and University of Ottawa instructor who has called Arnprior home for the past almost 10 years. “We don’t know of any group anywhere that has this combination.” Guitars Alive consists of an unusual combination of guitars: classical-flamenco, electric, acoustic, dobro and bass. “This original combination allows us to give the audience an incredible variety of styles: from original folk roots to blues, ragtime, light jazz and our speciality: Latin American rhythms and melodies - a very appealing program suitable to all ages,” said Candelaria. Founder of the Canadian Guitar Quartet (CGQ), an internationally-renowned ensemble, Candelaria has been a performer

The Guitars Alive Quartet is playing Grace St. Andrew’s Church on Oct. 28. The unique group consists of - Philip Candelaria on Latin-classical guitar, third from left, Gary DiSalle on electric guitar and Paul Dunn on acoustic guitar and dobro. All are well-known recording artists, and virtuoso performers in a wonderful variety of musical styles. They are joined by bassist Tom Linklater for concerts that feature Spanish & Latin arrangements, along with blues, slide guitar, bluegrass, ragtime, swing, jazz, and original music. and music instructor for many years. He, along with wife Iris and daughter Valentina, have grown to love living in the Town of Arnprior and have immersed themselves in the community and its organizations. Candelaria is excited about the venue, as well, having performed

there in 2013 with G8 (guitar8), a guitar octet that paired the CGQ with the Austrian/German Salzburger Gitarrenquartett. “There’s a wonderful acoustic – we did the G8 there – all acoustic – it was great,” he said. “Most people know where that is and it has accessibility.” He encourages all music lovers

to come out for the show. “We want everyone to feel welcome,” he said. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance at the Arnprior Book Shop and will be $25 at the door. More information on the group is available at www.guitarsalivequartet.com .

Keep OVMF alive in the Valley The Ottawa Valley Music Festival (OVMF) has been making great music in the valley for 25 years. Now is the time to renew OVMF, building the board and volunteer base required to continue this tradition, another 25 years. OVMF’s recent choral concert of Mozart and Haydn was a stunning success — glorious music, in a beautiful church with a sellout and very appreciative audience. OVMF has put on almost 100 concerts and workshops since its inception, an amazing accomplishment. It is only through the hard work and

commitment of the board of directors and volunteers that this calibre of musical programming is possible. The current board has given their all and is ready to pass the torch. OVMF has a nucleus of people committed to building OVMF into the future. We have a solid financial footing and a good donor base. Mervin Fick, conductor extraordinaire, is committed to working with OVMF going forward. OVMF and the Renfrew Youth Children’s Choir will collaborate to support and expand youth musical programming. Cara Gilbertson-Boese, one

of the soloists in the recent Mozart-Haydn Gala Concert, summed it up, “All my best wishes to the visionaries and artists that have been part of the past 25 years. I truly hope that the torch is thrown to the next generation to help the Ottawa Valley Music Festival redefine, recreate, and renew yourselves as you grow into the next 25 years. Brava to everyone! To continue, we need your help. It was a huge win for the Kings on Saturday night in Cobden as they easily defeated the Tikis 11-4. The Kings exploded out of the gates in the first period scoring five goals. It was a busy Sunday night with all three local teams hitting the ice. The Wolves lost to the Richmond Royals 5-3, Spencer Hill, Jack Rouleau and Foster scored for Renfrew. And the Packers beat the Perth Blue Wings 5-3, scoring for Arnprior were: Brandon English and Bailey Hein, both had two, and Colin Baggio added one more. Glow Walk, Run and Roll raises $44,000 for L’Arche groups and hospital NANCY ILLMAN

On Sept. 29 the three local L’Arche communities partnered with the Arnprior Regional Health Foundation to sponsor a Glow Walk, Run and Roll in Arnprior as a fundraiser for the four organizations. The event was a lot of fun, despite inclement weather. We gathered outside the Arnprior District High School (ADHS) for a barbecue ably managed by Valley Roots, and were entertained by a DJ with lively music and some face painting while we registered and got all glowed up. Warm-up exercises ensued, which were appreciated by all as they served two purposes. Then it was time for the runners to start the event, so we gathered at the start line and cheered John Yakabuski, MPP for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, on as he wielded a pair of scissors and posed for the classic ribbon-cutting shot. It was a healthy group of runners - 25 of the 300 in attendance - who got us started, and then the rest set off on foot, in wheelchairs and pushing walkers and strollers. Participants proceeded down John Street from the hospital to Elgin, then back up Harriet to finish at ADHS - a 2km route. There were Ontario Provincial Police cruisers in front and back, a van handing out water, and volunteer marshals at each intersection, ensuring that everyone completed the route in safety. When participants returned to

The first ever Glow With Us Walk, Run and Roll on Sept. 29, raised $44,000 for three local L’Arche groups and the hospital. To start the event MPP for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke John Yakabuski cuts the ribbon. ADHS an all-ages ‘After Glow’ party ing and general merry-making. Prizes p.m., sending children and adults ensued, aided and abetted by the DJ were distributed and a 50/50 draw home happy and ready for some wellwith blacklight, lots of glow, danc- held. Things wrapped up around 9 deserved rest.

Running with optimism

The organizers would like to thank all those who participated in this our inaugural glow event. The event raised over $44,000 dollars, enabling L’Arche Agapè to purchase a new van for their community in Gatineau, L’Arche Ottawa to support their core members with additional program capability, L’Arche Arnprior to retrofit their new wheelchair van, and the Arnprior Regional Health Foundation to purchase a new hospital bed. As well, we would like to extend a hearty thank you to all of the local businesses and the Town of Arnprior which pitched in to help with this event, providing prizes, refreshments and fantastic help with the logistics. L’Arche Arnprior owes a debt of gratitude to Lorrie and Rick Lunny, who matched all of the money raised for our community, effectively doubling our fundraising efforts. Most especially we extend our thanks to George Jackson Toyota, M Sullivan & Son Limited and others, whose generous donations helped to defray the costs associated with sponsoring this type of fundraiser. We are also indebted to all of the volunteers who helped the event to run so smoothly, especially those from the Knights of Columbus, students from ADHS, the Royal Bank of Canada, the Arnprior Regional Health Foundation and so many more. Thanks to those at both L’Arche Arnprior and the ARH Foundation who organized the event for us all to enjoy. See you next year, Glow on!

The intermediate girls break from the start line in their Optimist Run through Gillies Grove and high school track earlier this month. The winning schools at that level were Walter Zadow, St. Joseph’s Arnprior, and McNab Public School. At the junior level, it was Walter Zadow, St. Joseph’s Arnprior, and McNab. At the road runners (youngest students), it was Walter Zadow, McNab, and St. John XXIII. Right: Daniel Coady left it all out on the track for his St. John XXIII Catholic School during the Oct. 12. He was rewarded with a first-place finish in the junior boys division. Second was Dean Letourneau. Parker Bradley was third. In junior girls, Anna Hirst won, with Koree Yach and Alexis McGuire following up. Road runner boys winners were Grayson Lyons, Kaden McGregor, and Jake Redmond. In girls, it was Rachel McMaster, Anisa Raudssus. The intermediate girls winners were Louise Stonham, Maddison Robinson, and Kira Sully. THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Marguirite expected to win the Halloween contest Mother said it was just because I was excited. Emerson said I wasn’t called ‘nervous Nellie’ for nothing. Halloween had rolled around, and I was in a state. I wanted to go as a princess, but my chances of coming up with an elaborate costume such as a princess would wear, were pretty slim. The talk at the Northcote School was that bad Marguirite had a store bought costume, and was having her hair done at Ducharme’s Beauty Parlour. She hinted she even had silver shoes and something with real diamonds in it for her hair. And here I was, destined to wear whatever Mother could throw together from the clothes already being worn to school, or doing chores, or some that long ago should have seen the rag bag. Audrey refused to wear anything that had come within 20 feet of the cow byre, saying it didn’t matter how much of Mother’s cologne she put on, you could still smell cow! As happened every Halloween,

what little makeup she wore. Audrey came out looking like she belonged in one of those side-shows from the Renfrew Fair, where children weren’t allowed, and any husband worth his salt ignored. I thought she was gorgeous. It didn’t take long for the boys from the Barr Side road to spot her, and I was amazed at the change in my sister, all because of a silk dress that come in the hand-me-down box from Regina! There was Marguirite, with her store-bought costume, the silver shoes she raved about, and her hair done up high on her head, but I couldn’t see anything that looked like a diamond anywhere. There were games, bobbing for apples, musical chairs, and fiddle music, and the school heated up like a night in July all because of the many bodies crammed into the one room. Finally, the United Church Minister clapped his hands together, quieting everyone down, and said he had chosen a winner. Marguirite got out of her chair, ready to bolt up to the front of the

room for the prize, so sure was she her name would be called. The minister made a long speech, just as if he were preaching a sermon, and then announced that Audrey Haneman was the winner! Everyone clapped, Audrey turned bright red, Marguirite started to cry, and I was so happy I almost wet my pants. Thank goodness there was no school the next day, because as hard as she scrubbed, Audrey wasn’t able to get rid of all the makeup. I thought she should leave it on for church. Mother thought differently. Emerson said the prize Audrey got wasn’t worth the effort she went to. I thought it was wonderful! It was a bag of maple leaf cookies from Briscoe’s General Store! No doubt donated by Mr. Briscoe himself. We cleaned them out on the way home from the Northcote School. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? The top-10 ‘Valley Search for a Star’ contestants, competing for the grand prize of $3,500 include: (standing from left) Tiffany Schilkie, Jamie Anne Bentz, Beverley Cutmore, Levi Hart, Jeanika Benoit, Lori MacKenzie, and Bailey Rogers. Seated are Gracie Cavanagh, Ainsley Phillips, and Vicki Brittle.

Ten singers vie for ‘Valley Search for a Star’ title If you’re a fan of Ottawa Valley music, then the Horton Community Centre is the place to be on Sunday, Oct. 29 as 10 of the area’s top singers will be competing in the finals of Valley Heritage Radio’s ‘Valley Search for a Star’ contest. The month-long singing competition wraps up on the 29th, as a field of 40 has been whittled down to the final 10 who are vying for the coveted title, and the grand prize of $3,500. “Promoting local music, and sharing that music with people in the Ottawa Valley and beyond is high on our priority list,” says VHR station manager Jason Marshall. The finals will also feature something new for the contest, as the 10 singers will not be alone on stage. They’ll be performing with the Hall of Fame band, who will back up each of the contestants. “This is a new wrinkle this year, and one we think will make the finals not only exciting, but an event local music fans won’t want to miss,” adds Marshall. The band will feature Ottawa Valley Country Music Hall of Famers Brian Hebert (fiddle), Rodger Coulombe (guitar), Dale “Duke” Duch-

arme (bass), and Brian Ostrom (steel guitar), along with Maureen Young (keyboards), and Mark Lemieux (drums). They will be backing up a deep and talented field of singers who will each perform two songs in the finals. They are: Jeanika Benoit (Arnprior), Jamie Anne Bentz (Arnprior), Vicki Brittle (Arnprior), Grace Cavanagh (Kinburn), Beverley Cutmore (Renfrew), Levi Hart (Bristol), Lori MacKenzie (Renfrew), Ainsley Phillips (Arnprior), Bailey Rogers (Renfrew), and Tiffany Schilkie (Chalk River). Marshall is also grateful for the support of major sponsor Welch LLP from Renfrew, who are responsible for the great prize package of $3,500 for first, and $1,000 for runner-up. The public is encouraged to attend the show which starts at 3 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 29 at the Horton Community Centre (1005 Castleford Rd.). Doors open at 2 p.m., and seating is limited, so people are asked to get there early to secure their spot. Admission is $10. For more information, contact Jason at 613432-9873.
