A public meeting hosted by the fair board was designed to quash rumours and accept suggestions for how the struggling organization could move forward. Held at Kenwood Centre on Oct. 17, nine

members of the Arnprior Fair board of directors were joined by about 20 members of the public. With poor weather affecting revenues from two major events this summer, plus the impending land sale and planned move to a new venue, concern on social media and elsewhere is mounting.

President Jeff Desarmia, who has been on the board since 1977, gave a lengthy introduction detailing the history of the 163-year-old fair, explaining that the municipality does not own it or its property on Galvin Street. See FAIR BOARD page 2

The rift between the fair and town hall became apparent early in the discussion, and persisted throughout much of the night. “This is one of the misconceptions people have. We are not owned by the Town of Arnprior,” Desarmia said. “We get no financial support from

town council whatsoever.” The town provides picnic tables and other items in lieu, and the province provides a maximum $4,500 grant (based on the previous year’s attendance), but that is about the extent of governmental support. When the 1,000-seat grandstand was burned down; when five barns were burned down; when the fence

is cut; when the land is treated as a dog park; and when neighbours toss their yard refuge on the property, Desarmia said: fair volunteers alone are left to cope with the losses. So when the fair asked the town last year for a tourism-related grant, it was turned down “because we’re too successful,” Desarmia said. “And the mayor said he didn’t know what we would do with the money – pocket it?” He mentioned a town report that included information from a two hour interview he participated in. The report suggested expropriating the fairgrounds “for no money” to build a lawn bowling, soccer pitch, and dog park. “There is very little support from the town.” Some councillors, such as Lynn Grinstead, are fine supporters of the fair. But he said others have little understanding of how the fair operates, even though they’ve lived in town their whole lives. It was determined that a recent fair brought in $482,000 in economic benefits to area businesses. Were the fair to disappear, so would those

spinoff dollars. Yet even local companies don’t support the fair in large numbers. The board said its marketing strategy to gain sponsorship works well, but that area businesses are quickly tapped out giving money to minor hockey and other causes. Coun. Frank Dugal was listening at the back of the room. He eventually spoke up, asking how the board intends to rebuild its relationship with the town, and how the town can help mend it. He suggested council could have been invited to the meeting. “You are bashing town hall and that’s fine,” Dugal said. “If we want to move forward, we need to work together and build on what we can. I know what was said, and I can’t change that. But we need to move forward.” It was agreed that following the annual general meeting next month, council would be invited to a meeting in December. “We would appreciate it,” Desarmia said. The board looked favourably upon a number of ideas brought for-

ward by the public: • A winter demolition derby, perhaps to coincide with the Optimist Club Winter Carnival; • Horseshoe tournament; • Drive-in bingo. Ideas met with less enthusiasm include: • Bring back harness racing (provincial funding dried up, making the sport too expensive in smaller markets): • Snowmobile racing (if an organization wants to rent the property); • Mud run – with small purses - to raise funds for the fair; • Ranch night (halls now keep bar profits, the major revenue generator); The board is interested in renting the property for events. It brings in money while expending few resources. In the past the fair has welcomed Terry Fox Run, Touch A Truck, and horse shows. It plans for many more events when the planned agricultural complex is built in a few years from now. Hosting events like cattle shows indoors removes the risk that weather will cause cancellations.

Compromise reached over Village Creek dispute in Arnprior The Town of Arnprior and Pegasus Development have negotiated a solution to satisfy residents Derek Dunn

derek.dunn@metroland.com

The trend toward fewer large houses in new developments continues, along with the anxiety it causes existing neighbours. But this time in Arnprior a compromise was struck that appears to have satisfied all stakeholders. Developers around the Ottawa Valley over the last year or so have asked municipalities to revise their plans. They say the market demands more semi-detached (two units attached) and townhouses; leading to fewer single detached homes. For

residents who bought in early, that means a very different looking neighbourhood and a likely devaluation of their property. Arnprior recently agreed to changes Campanale wanted in its Callahan Estates subdivision, prompting fears of even more rental units with transient tenants who in some cases have less commitment to their neighbours. Mayor David Reid decried council’s decision to allow more townhouses, saying the developer was not made to compromise. It was a different outcome at the Oct. 11 council meeting, attended

by about a dozen nervous residents of Village Creek just west of Highway 417. They were there to hear town staff’s negotiated solution with Pegasus Development. They already knew about Pegasus’ first attempt to change the original plan back in the summer. They wanted to build semidetached homes across Bert Hall Street from existing singles. Public resistance sent the developer back to revise numbers. The latest proposal brought to council sees lot sizes reduced to allow for 12 more units, not as many as first requested. Council fears of

too little room for on-road parking, snow storage, green space, and increased traffic congestion are now allayed. “I’m comfortable with it,” Mayor David Reid said. “I recognize it is smaller than ideal. But I’m comfortable they will work.” The number of single-family homes has been reduced but not near the existing ones on Bert Hall. There

is now approval for 28 semi-detached homes around a curve behind the creek at the back of the neighbourhood. It will have less impact on existing homeowners. “This is the compromise position I am taking,” Reid said. The rest of council agreed. Both the developer and residents thanked council for brokering the compromise.

Macnamara Field Naturalists

The concept of time travel fascinates all ages. When we imagine it or watch a movie or TV series with altered time, the shifts are usually measured in decades or centuries. Prepare for your mind to be blown. We have in our own backyard a portal into deep time on earth, transporting us back some 3.5 billion years. Yes, billion, not million. Our portal: stromatolite fossils. These unique landforms - some reaching diameters over 1.5m - are exposed in rocks along many sections of the Ontario side of the Ottawa River especially at low water levels notes retired geology professor Dr. Allan Donaldson. Local sites include shores near south Pembroke and Dunrobin, the islands offshore from Fitzroy Provincial Park and on the Quebec side, a riverbed just west of the Champlain Bridge. The stromatolites of the Ottawa Valley are about 450 million years old. You can learn more about these landforms when Dr. Donaldson presents Stromatolites of the Ottawa Valley at the Macnamara Field Naturalists’ next meeting, Nov. 1. Peeling back layers of time So what was Earth like 3.5 billion years ago? And how do we even know? In a Geological Time Scale for Our Planet, Proportionally Compressed to One Year, Dr. Donaldson notes: On this condensed time scale, the Ottawa River has followed its present path for little more than a minute, having developed as a principal drainage pathway during the recession of the last continental ice sheet, 12,000 to 8,000 years ago (or about two minutes ago on our condensed time scale. There were no continents yet. The initial land masses were hundreds of micro continents and island arcs. The first merging of these smaller land masses to form continents is thought to have happened 3 billion years ago. Some 3.5 billion years ago, Earth was covered by shallow seabeds —a thin layer of water over a thin crust of hardened molten lava— formed when water started accumulating in the atmosphere, cooling the lava. The Earth’s atmosphere at this time was rich

in carbon dioxide. What are stromatolites? Stromatolites are layered forms in sedimentary rocks formed by the activities of cyanobacteria (or “blue-green algae”), the oldest known life form on Earth. Usually in the warm saline water of shallow sea environments, mats of these bacteria began to build up in layers to form rounded, domed structures. These layers are formed through the trapping of small grains of sand, or sediments, by mucus secreted by the bacteria within a growing mat of bacterial filaments. The bacteria then grow upwards towards the sun, as they are photosynthetic. This process is repeated over and over again to form the layering within the stromatolite. These bacteria through photosynthesis produced the oxygen-rich atmosphere we have today, and therefore played an important role in creating life as we know it today. Stromatolites continued to form all the way through the geologic record and today grow in warm intertidal waters, as seen in Shark Bay in Western Australia and other locations such as the Bahamas. Did you catch that? Life forms of stromatolites that provide a fossil record that extends far back into the Precambrian - some nearly 3.5 billion years old, continue to grow today. This loops us back to the “How do we know what Earth was like 3.5 billion years ago” question. By using the theory “the present is the key to the past” researchers derived that ancient stromatolites were very similar to the modern living ones. Fascinating, isn’t it. Learn more firsthand from an expert at our next meeting. Guests are always welcome. Don’t miss Stromatolites of the Ottawa Valley. When: Tuesday, November 1, 7:30 p.m. Where: Arnprior Curling Club, 15 Galvin St., Arnprior Cost: Meetings (and presentations) are free for club members and $5 for guests. Play it safe this Halloween Arnprior Fire Department

It’s the time of the year for festive costumes, endless candy, spooky jack-o-lanterns, and creepy decorations. The Fire Prevention Office of the Arnprior Fire Department would like to remind everyone to take a few simple precautions to keep Halloween safe and enjoyable for our Town’s little ghosts and goblins. Children dressed in costumes excitedly running door to door to trick-or-treat, festive decorations like glowing jack-o-lanterns, paper ghosts and dried cornstalks adorning front porches – these are some of the classic hallmarks of Halloween that make the holiday special for kids and adults alike. Unfortunately, these Halloween symbols and activities can also present lurking fire risks that have the potential to become truly scary. But by planning ahead, you can help make this Halloween a fire-safe one. Taking simple fire safety precautions like keeping decorations far away from open flames and using battery-operated candles or glowsticks in jack-o- lanterns can help ensure your holiday remains festive and fun! Halloween by the Numbers – Source: National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) * From 2009-2013, decorations were the item first ignited in an estimated average of 860 reported home structure fires per year. * Nearly half of decoration fires in homes occurred because the decorations were too close to a heat source. * These fires caused an estimated average of one civilian death, 41 civilian injuries and $13 million in direct property damage per year. * Forty-one per cent of these incidents were started by candles; one-fifth began in the living room, family room, or den. Halloween Safety Tips * When choosing a costume, stay away from billowing or long trailing fabric and keep them short to avoid a tripping hazard. If you are making your own costume, choose material that is bright and reflective and won’t easily ignite if it comes into contact with heat or flame. If your child is wearing a mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough so they can see out.

* Always carry a flashlight with you as you accompany your children as they ‘trick or treat.’ Make sure you have a cellphone and that everyone knows to call 9-1-1 in an emergency. Provide children with flashlights to carry for lighting or glow sticks as part of their costume as well. * It is safest to use a flashlight or batteryoperated candles in a jack-o-lantern. If you use a real candle, use extreme caution. Make sure children and pets are watched at all times when candles are lit. When lighting candles inside jack-o-lanterns, use long fireplace-style matches or a utility lighter. Be sure to place lit pumpkins well away from anything that can burn and far away from trickor-treaters, doorsteps, walkways, and yards. If you choose to use candle decorations, make sure to keep them well attended at all times and blow them out when you leave the room. * Tell children to stay away from open flames and keep any matches, lighters or utility lighters out of sight and reach of children. Be sure they know how to stop, drop and roll if their clothing catches fire. (Have them practice stopping immediately, dropping to the ground, covering their face with hands, and rolling over and over to put the flames out.) * Remember to keep exits clear of decorations, so nothing blocks escape routes. Consider using flashlights as alternatives to candles or torch lights when decorating walkways and yards. They are much safer for trick-or-treaters, whose costumes may brush against the lighting. * Dried flowers, cornstalks, and crepe paper are highly flammable. Keep these and other decorations well away from all open flames and heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters. * Ensure electrical outlets are not overloaded with holiday lighting or special effects. * Test your smoke alarms to make sure they work. In the event a fire starts in your home, you need to know right away. For more information about Halloween safety visit www.arnprior.ca or the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management’s website at www.ontario.ca/firemarshal.

The week beginning on Nov. 1 in each year is proclaimed as Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week. Carbon monoxide is known as the silent killer because it is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas. The Hawkins Gignac Act is named in honour of the Hawkins family — Laurie, Richard, and their children, Cassandra and Jordan — who were tragically killed by carbon monoxide poisoning in their Woodstock home. Reminding Ontarians of the importance of having functioning carbon monoxide detectors can help save lives. Designating Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week aligns the need to check carbon monoxide

detectors and appliances with the end of daylight savings time. Changing the time on clocks and maintaining safety alarms are two necessary tasks that are easy to perform and promote together. As winter approaches, the impetus to begin using gas fired appliances, such as fireplaces, that can produce lethal carbon monoxide increases. Appliances that are rarely used over the summer months may develop leaks or blockages and cause carbon monoxide to accumulate inside the home. Therefore, it is important to inspect appliances and carbon monoxide detectors when the colder temperatures begin. This November the Fire Prevention Office of the Arnprior Fire De-

The precious poppy T

his week one of the most powerful symbols of collective memory and honouring sacrifice is once again starting to be on display across the country. That symbol is the poppy. Starting Oct. 28, poppies will be available to the public in the lead up to Remembrance Day Nov. 11. This year’s National Poppy Campaign was launched at a special event hosted by Gov. Gen. David Johnston on Oct. 19, in which the Gov. Gen. honoured Canadian veterans from past military campaigns. The public act of wearing a poppy at this time of year is a way for the nation to remember our shared collective history as a country that has never turned away when duty called, and that we, as a nation, will never forget the sacrifices of our veterans who have served in our military. And while Canadian military personnel have been active in recent years in such places as Afghanistan and the ongoing fight against the murderous thugs that call themselves ISIS, the number of veterans from such military campaigns of the past such as the First and Second World Wars and Korea are dwindling with the passage of time. The poppy honours those who have served in our military and keeps alive

forever the memory of the 117,000 Canadians who have given their lives for our ongoing freedom in conflicts around the globe. “With each poppy we remember someone who is no longer with us,” Johnston said at the poppy campaign’s launch. “It’s now our responsibility to pass on what we know to keep the memories alive.” Each year, approximately 18 million poppies are distributed across Canada, and Canadians wear them with pride, with heavy hearts, and with respect for those who have served and those who have died. The campaign, which was officially adopted in Canada in 1921 by the Great War Veterans’ Association (the predecessor of today’s Royal Canadian Legion), acts as a symbol of what this country is all about, which is why most Canadians, in one form or another, support the poppy campaign and wear a poppy on their lapels. It is not, and never should be, an empty fashion statement. It is a statement about what this country represents, which is why it a unifying national campaign that everyone should stand on guard for. Let’s put on our poppies in the lead up to Remembrance Day, and then on Nov. 11 let’s all proudly stand together again.

To all farmers, anglers, hunters and carbon haters To the editor:

Here is another bill you better read up on. It is called ‘C-246 Modernizing Animal Protection Act.’ What the heck is it with these loonie Liberals they are control freaks? This law starts off with some good remarks but gets very vague toward the end. The Liberal that put this bill forward is a vegan, maybe he wants all of Canada to follow suit. This bill was defeated at least seven times before, that’s how crazy it is. But now with the government we have in they might give this guy a medal. It’s what this

bill leaves out that worries me. Please read it very carefully and contact your Liberal MP and the Senate and get these bills defeated once again. We need Harper back! Two more things that I would like to bring to your attention are: why did the mainstream media keep hammering away at Mike Duffy for a $90,000 cheque? I mean that’s all we heard for days, weeks, and months. Now Trudeau’s friends come along and have a bill for the taxpayer for roughly $200,000 and no media attention! Something tells me there is a little favouritism going on here. I don’t know.

What do you think? And our fearless leader basically told all the provinces to implement some sort of carbon tax and if you don’t - they will! Don’t believe it? Look it up, everything is hiding somewhere on a little news story someplace but not by the mainstream media outlets. There was a meeting with all the provinces and three premiers couldn’t stand what they were hearing and they just walked out. What a dictator! So how do you think our little French leader Napoleon is going to pay for all this debt? By taxing us and taxing us! Do you like

Beavers busy preparing for winter Despite the warm temperatures that until recently have dominated this wonderful time of year, many animals have been busy preparing for winter’s arrival. Gray Squirrels have been burying acorns while Blue Jays have been stashing seeds, emptying birdfeeders in the process. And beavers have been living up to the old adage: “busy as a beaver.” If anyone has recently visited a beaver pond – the masterpiece creation of these remarkable rodents two things would be apparent. One is that the beaver lodge has undergone a noticeable change in appearance. Plenty of fresh mud adorns its outer surface. Another is that a fallen forest had sprung up next to the lodge. The mud is a sure sign that freezing temperatures are in the not-too-distant future. Starting in late September, beavers begin plastering mud over their lodges. This serves as insulation during winter. As the days get shorter and nights colder, beavers continue

to add material during the day, especially on overcast days in November. Mud is dug up from the pond’s bottom, likely not far from the two underwater entrances. Mud is carried with both front hands holding it against the chest, much in the way that we carry a load of firewood. But beavers seldom carry just a load of mud to the top of the lodge. They inevitably carry a stick or two as well, which are clenched between its teeth. This double carry amazes me because it is done while a beaver waddles up its lodge with its head in the air, chin pressing down on the mud load it is carrying. It cannot see its feet, which are stepping across protruding sticks surrounded by slippery mud. Despite walking up a slope replete with trip hazards, I’ve never seen a beaver stumble. The “fallen forest” is the

beavers’ winter pantry. Beavers don’t hibernate and so eat every day. During the autumn they fell trees and cut off branches, which are dragged to the pond and piled up next to the lodge. The huge pile, which extends from the surface down to the bottom, contains branches that will be pulled into the lodge where their bark will be eaten. If you examine a food pile from its top to the bottom, you would see a change in the type of branches it contains. Near the bottom you would likely find Trembling Aspen, Willow, and White Birch branches for these are beavers favourite foods. But on the top you would likely see alder, cedar, and fir branches, items usually deemed inedible. These are placed on top because the ice renders them inaccessible during winter. Their role is to hold down the best foods under the ice where they remain accessible all winter. Now is a good time to watch beavers in action. Late evening and dawn are the best times, but as November passes beavers remain active well into the day. But once the

Inaugural Doctors Dining Duel plates $5K for recruitment Derek Dunn

derek.dunn@metroland.com

Area physicians and culinary experts were paired to cook up a new fundraising initiative for Arnprior Regional Health (ARH). A cocktail party at Sand Point Golf Course last weekend was the setting for the inaugural Doctors Dining Duel. It pitted scalpel and paring knife against scalpel and paring knife in a duel to the delicious. Almost 100 guests came out to enjoy and rate appetizers from seven tables. Behind each table were co-creators: an ARH doctor and a gastro expert. “It’s a good turnout for the first time holding this event. We’ve learned a lot this time around, said Eric Hanna, ARH president and CEO. “The physicians are having fun. That’s a good thing. Dr. Aya Suzuki and Greenside Tavern’s Emily Waterson paired up to create a pizza margherita, a sourdough base topped with red sauce and spicy sausage. It sent folks straight to the KIN Vineyards table for samples of Kinburn’s own wine. “We’re really in need of more doctors in this area, Suzuki said, who attended all the way from Ottawa. “I really wanted to help raise funds for the recruitment efforts and say that it takes an entire community to make it happen.

Host for the evening was Jason Marshall, who is never shy to let it be known he enjoys good food. He asked, to great laughter, that everyone tell his doctor he spent the night eating turnip and celery. “Seriously though, this is a re-

ally great event for a very important cause, he said. Mark Nibourg is chairman of the Arnprior Physician Recruitment Committee. He talked about the success of bringing two new family physicians to town in 2014, along with

two more this year. But more work is needed, and more funds are needed for the co-ordinator position, locum opportunities, luncheons for medical students or residents doing rotations in Arnprior, and attending career fairs.

“It is a competitive market to attract new physicians, with adjacent communities offering similar family medicine opportunities and comparable recreation and family attractions, Nibourg said. See SEAFOOD, page 11

TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO WHEREAS Electricity rates have risen by more than 300% since the current Government took office; and WHEREAS over half of Ontarians’ power bills are regulatory and delivery charges and the Global Adjustment; and WHEREAS the Global Adjustment is a tangible measure of how much Ontario must over-pay for unneeded wind and solar power, and the cost of off-loading excess power to our neighbours at a loss; and WHEREAS the market rate for electricity, according to Independent Electrical System Operator (IESO) data, has been less than 3 cents per kWh to date in 2016, yet the Government’s lack of responsible science-based planning has not allowed these reductions to be passed on to Ontarians, resulting in electrical bills several times more than that amount; and WHEREAS the implementation of Cap-and-Trade will drive the cost of electricity even higher and deny Ontarians the option to choose affordable natural gas heating; and WHEREAS more and more Ontarians are being forced to cut down on essential expenses such as food and medicines in order to pay their increasingly unaffordable electricity bills; and WHEREAS the ill-conceived energy policies of this Government that ignored the advice of independent experts and government agencies, such as the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) and the IESO, and are not based on science have resulted in Ontarians’ electricity costs rising, despite lower natural gas costs and increased energy conservation in the Province; WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, PETITION THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO AS FOLLOWS: To take immediate steps to reduce the total cost of electricity paid for by Ontarians, including costs associated with power consumed, the Global Adjustment, delivery charges, administrative charges, tax and any other charges added to Ontarians’ energy bills.

Ontario Provincial Police East Region names new commander in Chris Harkins Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) superintendent Chris Harkins, former Commander of the Fleet, Supply and Weapons services bureau at OPP general headquarters, has been promoted to the rank of Chief Superintendent and named Commander of OPP East Region. Chief superintendent Harkins fills the vacancy created by the retirement of the former Regional Commander, Dan Redmond. “Chief Superintendent Harkins brings vast and varied experience to his new role. He has a strong understanding of the issues, challenges

and opportunities facing not only the members of the OPP, but also the residents of Eastern Ontario, said Deputy Commissioner Gary Couture, Ontario Provincial Police. Originally from the Pembroke area, Harkins has been a member of the OPP for over 26 years. He has served in the Killaloe and Upper Ottawa Valley Detachments, has been commander of the Physical Surveillance Unit, Section Manager of the Analytical Section of the Provincial Operations Intelligence Bureau, deputy director of the Organized Crime En-

forcement Bureau and as Executive Officer for three former Deputy Commissioners and a former Provincial Commander. Harkins is a graduate of the Rotman School of Management Police Leadership Program and of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police Global Studies Program. Harkins oversees more than 1,200 uniformed and civilian members responsible for providing front-line and specialized policing services. THIS WORKSHOP is an opportunity to review the information and material, as well as discuss and comment on the policies. Please join us in order to provide your insight. THE WORKSHOP will be held on: Wednesday, November 16, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Almonte Old Town Hall, 14 Bridge Street, Almonte, ON If you require additional information, please contact the Municipal Planner, Stephen Stirling, at (613) 256-2064 ext.259.

of final designs for the revitalization of Gemmill Park. In the 2016 budget deliberations Council approved funds to develop plans for the park. Although it is unknown how much funding will be available from the Canada 150 grant and potential sale of land, final designs are required in order for the Municipality to proceed with construction. As well, comments from an open house held on June 29 were reviewed and incorporated into the concept plan. By-laws Approved for Trail Development: Council passed two by-laws authorizing the purchase of lands in Ramsay Ward for the purpose of developing a non-motorized trail between Greystone/ Stonehome subdivisions into Almonte. The two private properties are being purchased for a total of $8,850. The trail will be developed commencing this fall and will be finalized in the spring of 2017. Road Closures for Seasonal Activities: Council passed a bylaw authorizing the closure of Mill Street (from Bridge to Main Street) for four seasonal street celebrations and sidewalk sales. Merchants and business owners in downtown Almonte propose holding seasonal celebrations with street entertainment, sidewalk sales and themed activities. Closing the street to vehicles would allow for more activities on the sidewalk and roadway and ensure safety. The closures would be from 5 to 9:30 p.m. and are slated for the first Thursday after Remembrance Day, a Thursday in late April/early May (weather dependent), the third Thursday in July, and a Thursday in late September/early October (weather dependent). The events will offer extended hours at least four times per year. Closures will be advertised closer to the time along with notifications to businesses and are expected to begin this winter. Recommendation on Parkland to Proceed to Council: At the Committee of the Whole meeting following council, councillors received and discussed a staff report addressing options related to the proposed sale of Don Maynard Park and Block 42. Based on the 2013 Recreation Master Plan, Council identified a redevelopment plan for Gemmill Park as a legacy project to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. The two properties were proposed for sale to help fund the project. A public meeting and comment period in August generated significant public input. Councillors expressed their gratitude for the comments and presentations and for the interest in the project by so many citizens. Three options were considered at Committee of the Whole, and councillors approved a compromise that would see a portion of the lands retained. There will be a public consultation component in the process. This option must still receive final approval at the next council meeting on November 1 before proceeding. As well, any reconfiguration of the lands must come back to Council for approval. For more information please contact 613-256-2064. Art Tree project growing in the community Arnprior Business & Fitness Centre

Tiffany Lepack

tlepack@metroland.com

Art Trees are continuing to grow in preparation to help celebrate Canada’s 150 next year, including one tree that has a special connection to the Renfrew Mercury. Marlene Schaly, from Calabogie, is spearheading the project to have families, schools, business and groups come together to each create their own Art Tree masterpiece. More than 20 trees from Arnprior, Renfrew, Calabogie and Burnstown have already been completed and she hopes the initiative will soon take off nationally as well. “It’s about who you are connected with in your community,” said Schaly. Each completed Art Tree will be owned by its creators and proudly displayed at participating communities’ art shows during Canada’s 150th celebrations. “The idea is everyone can share in the creativity.” Schaly reports that Heritage Canada has just approved the use of the official 150th logo. She has also applied for a grant to hire staff for the project because right now it is completely volunteer-run. “It’s so ambitious to get it into every town and village across the country.” Schaly, along with Jennifer Campbell and Polly Donnelley, created a tree in honour of former Mercury nature columnist Jim Ferguson, who died early this year. She said they decided to make a tree for Ferguson because he made an impact in the community. “He’s such a prominent citizen in our community and was so involved,” said Schaly. “He was a scout leader, a teacher and he was also a warm and giving person.” On the Art Tree for Ferguson there are quotes from Mercury editor Sherry Haaima’s article after he passed away. “For decades, Jim brought the beauty of nature into our lives through his weekly bird column, Scene from the Hawk’s Eye. Jim was a kind, caring man with a big heart and a wonderful sense of humour. He began writing his Mercury column in 1980 and before long people from all over the Upper Ottawa Valley were calling him for advice and with bird stories that he passed along to readers. He was also a treasured member of the Mercury family and the beauty he shared with us every week through his column will be missed.” There are also handmade green leaves, embossed feathers, drawings of birds and owls and words and phrases that depict his attributes, accomplishments and interests that were taken from the eulogy his son Cory wrote. “This was really a perfect opportunity to do a tribute for someone who has had a major impact on our community,” said Schaly. The Ferguson tree will be on display at Opeongo High

The Jim Ferguson Art Tree, is just one of many trees sprouting up in the community before Canada’s 150th birthday next year. Below a detail of the tree. A number of Art Trees will be on display during the White Lake Annual Fall Fest on Oct. 29 at the Women’s Institute Hall, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

School and some of the other trees will be on display at the White Lake Women’s Institute hall on Saturdays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. until July 2017, so people can view some of the completed trees. They are also offering a workshop, the first Saturday of every month, to help people complete their Art Trees. For more information call 613-623-2776. There are six different group themes for trees: family, schools, charities, First Nations, business, and community clubs/groups. Some of the groups that have already completed their tree include: 3 Doors, Renfrew Legion, the Whitewater Wesleyan Church, Arnprior School of Dance, Arnprior Community Choir, Arnprior Special Olympics and a number of local schools. The cost of a kit to create the Art Tree is $100 and it comes boxed with an archival art print of the tree, design sheet, lettering, extra art papers, instructions on art techniques and the logo. For more information search ‘Art Tree Project’ on Facebook, visit www.arttreeproject.ca, email: arttreeproject@gmail.com or call 613-433-3274.

Thank You Mammograms Save Lives

Further to the announcement of the sale of Mather Insurance & Real Estate Ltd. to JP Mulvihill Insurance last month, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff members that supported our family over the years as well as the clients who entrusted us to take care of their real estate and insurance needs. Without their service and support, there would have been no company. I can’t thank you enough. In a way, the former clients of Mather Insurance & Real Estate Ltd. have moved from one family to another family. The Mulvihill family is larger in both the personal family sense of the word and in the insurance business which gives clients more choice having more insurance markets and now more brokers to provide service and advice. Our former clients can now have all of their insurance needs provided by one brokerage from their Commercial and Personal insurance requirements to Life Insurance Products which we were not licensed to provide.

Doug’s Automotive Solutions 470 Obrien Road Renfrew 613.431.8290

As the previous announcement stated, the Mulvihills are temporarily working from the former Mather office beside the Scotiabank and will be back in their own office across from the Royal Bank in December. They are making every effort to make the transition as easy as possible for all clients. Once again, thank you so much for your support. It is sincerely appreciated more than you know.

When a snowflake in winter Plants a kiss on your cheek, That kiss may well have been me And the dust which appears out of nowhere, May be part of the dust that was me. Through the promises of morning, And the voice of the wind, I will always have something to say, To reflect on those wonderful moments, And warm you as you make your way. All things that we both were a part of, Will continue to brighten each day. Making room for the sounds of your laughter By remembering I’m not that far away. Always remembered, Especially 22 days ago at our grandson, Bryce Ronald Cavanagh’s wedding and our 50th wedding anniversary with a dance with all our family for you. Love you forever, Melba, Brent, Darlene, Barry, Kelly, Jennifer, Chris, Bryce, Jessica, Emma, Rachel, Holly, Grace, Liam, and our new granddaughter Michalic.

Gourley’s annual buck and doe contest runs Nov. 7 to 20 Tiffany Lepack

Fall in the Valley means one thing - it’s hunting season. For more than 10 years, Gourley’s Outdoors has been running its Big Buck and Doe Contest and it’s back again this year, running from Nov. 7 to 20 (gun season only). When asked why people should sign up for the annual event, Keith Gourley had one answer. “It’s for bragging rights,” said Gourley. It only costs $10 to enter and the deadline to enter is Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. The contest closes on Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. Deer must be harvested according to and abiding by the current Ontario hunting regulations. The contest also raises money for a good cause. “We get a lot of people buying entries because it supports Hospice Renfrew,” said Gourley, adding the facility is an important asset to the community. “I have had a lot of customers use it and they say it is a life changer.” All excess funds from the cost of

running the contest will be donated to Hospice Renfrew. There is more than $3,500 up for grabs in cash and prizes and all contestants are entered into a side draw with at least five separate prizes from Excalibur for a 350 Limited Edition Bow $600, Vortex, Primos, Irish Creek Outfitters, Whitewater Brewery and Jakes Custom Leather. There are five categories for the contest: biggest buck, biggest doe, rack with the most points, weirdest rack and a youth division. In 2015 the biggest buck weighed in at 233 lbs and the biggest doe was 138.4 lbs. As to the weirdest rack they do get some that are quite interesting. “We get different ones that can be deformed, some that are interlocked and sometimes we get a doe with a rack,” said Gourley. In the biggest buck category, first place takes home $250 cash plus a $250 gift certificate and a $100 gift certificate to Reinert Taxidermy. In the biggest doe category the winner gets $150 cash and a $150 gift certificate. There are also prizes for second, third and fourth place.

Jonathan Wright is a recent winner in the youth division of Gourley’s Outdoors annual Big Buck and Doe Contest. This year the contest runs Nov. 7 to 20. For the rack with the most points they get a prize pack from Make’Em Horny Seed and Mineral. The weirdest rack winner gets a Rackstacker Prize Pack. And first prize in the youth division, 16 and under, is $75 cash, $50 for second and $25 for

close of the contest. “Once all the dust has settled we will let everyone know,” said Gourley. “Last year we had 450 entries and we try to beat that every year.” This year they have eliminated the weigh-in fee. Last year they weighed in approximately 60 deer. “Hopefully without the weigh-in fee we will see more people.” There will also be a 50/50 draw with proceeds going to the Renfrew Fish and Game Club. On Nov. 5 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Gourley’s will host their seventh annual barbecue and bake sale in partnership with Bluewave Energy. All proceeds raised from the sale go to the Renfrew Victoria Hospital Foundation. “It’s pointed to the hunters but our regular customers come out as well. There are pies, baked goods, hamburgers, bacon on a bun,” said Gourley. “The pies always go first…over the last six years we have raised over $13,600.” Gourley’s Outdoors is located on Hwy. 132 just outside of Renfrew, for more information call 613-432-5093.

Ontario Works recipients to receive small increase Family rate to increase by 1.5 per cent Staff

Change of command

SUBMITTED

The 2360 - 42nd Field Artillery Regiment (Lanark and Renfrew Scottish) Royal Canadian Artillery - Army Cadet Corps had their Change of Command Ceremony on Oct. 3 at the Nick Smith Centre. The outgoing commanding officer - Captain R.A Dufour, CD, (of four years), seated at left, handed the command over to the incoming commanding officer Captain C.L. Dufour, CD, seated on the right. Presiding officer Major Doug Irish is seated in the middle. Captain C .L. Dufour is looking forward to the continued growth of the corps and to working with the staff and the cadets.

Ontario residents receiving support from Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support program are getting a raise, albeit a small one, this fall. Starting in October the rate for single adults goes up $25 a month and the amount received by families will increase by 1.5 per cent for families. Individuals with disabilities who receive Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) payments saw their amount go up 1.5 per cent starting in September. In addition, the province is increasing support for parents who receive income through the Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities program by 1.5 per cent. As a first step to a wider income security system, the province’s Income Security Reform Working Group is conducting a review of a variety of income supports, including social assistance. This work will support the development of a roadmap for an income security system based on “fairness, adequacy and simplicity.”

Ontario is also developing a Basic Income pilot to test a different approach to income security. Social assistance provides support to more than 900,000 adults and children in Ontario every day. A single adult without children will receive $100 more per month through Ontario Works than they did in 2012. The government has raised rates in 12 out of the last 13 years. Since 2003, Ontario has increased social assistance rates by 20 per cent for families receiving Ontario Works and families and individuals with disabilities receiving ODSP, and by 33 per cent for single adults receiving Ontario Works. Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, October 27, 2016 39

Audrey thinks her luck is looking up when she is asked on date My sister Audrey was getting desperate. Her best friend Iva had a steady boyfriend, Melany was already married, and Audrey only went out once, on what could be called a real date, and that boy from the Barr Line latched on to a girl from Douglas right after, and had been taking her to the church socials ever since. Mother assured her, her time would come. After all, she was still young, and in her last year at the Northcote School. Secretly, I was delighted that Audrey didn’t have a steady beau. That meant the long winter nights could be spent with the both of us sitting at the kitchen table going through Eaton’s catalogue, a pastime I dearly loved. Out of the blue one night, the phone rang, and it was for Audrey and a lad from several miles away

the kitchen so that I could get a good look at him. It was going to be a long evening ahead. I played jacks, looked through the catalogue on my own, which was no fun at all, and was colouring the picture in the Ottawa Farm Journal on the “Children’s Page”. I doubted Mother would let me stay up until Audrey got home, and I knew I wouldn’t shut an eye until she crawled into bed beside me. It was sure going to be a long evening ahead. It seemed to me that less than an hour had passed when we heard a car come in the yard, then we heard a car door slam, and Audrey burst into the kitchen like she had been shot out of a cannon! She was talking so fast, I could hardly understand what she was saying.

Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK

asked her to a dance in Douglas. Well, was she excited and by Saturday night she had tried on every dress in her scant wardrobe and that day her hair had been tied up in rags and her lisle stockings washed and hung beside the Findlay Oval to be dried. I could see the dim lights of the lad’s car coming in our long lane and I was thoroughly disappointed that Audrey ran outside to meet him before he had a chance to come into

Mother told her to calm down and Emerson offered that he thought the lad must have turned out to be a Catholic. Well, finally Audrey calmed down enough to tell us, he hardly spoke a word. She had to do all the talking all the way to Douglas and when they reached the dance hall, he left her standing at the door and he headed right over to a group of boys standing across the room. He finally wandered over to where she was, grabbed her hand and headed for the dance floor. “Other than a few grunts, he never said a word. I did all the talking.” It turned out he wasn’t much better at dancing, either. “I told him I had a headache and wanted to go home. I even had to get my own coat, because he headed for the door as if he couldn’t wait to get

outside.” I hated to admit it, but I was secretly delighted the date had turned out so badly. My beloved sister wouldn’t be tearing out of the house every Saturday night after all! Audrey’s rag-wrapped curls were hanging over her forehead and she had mud on her newly washed lisle stockings. Her final words summed up the night in proper fashion. “He’s as dead as a mackerel. He just doesn’t have the brains to lie down.” Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? After the meal, a draw was held to mark the end of a church raffle which was conducted to raise funds for a much needed lift installation. Local radio and newspaper reporter Peter DeWolfe, accompanied by his wife, attended to the drawing of the winning tickets. The third prize of $100.00 cash was won by Leslie & Joey Sullivan of White Lake, ON., the second prize of two (2) Ottawa Senators tickets were won by Mrs. Marjorie McEwen of Arnprior, ON.,and the first prize of a 55” Smart 4K Television was won by Mr. Darrell Carson of White Lake, ON. We were saddened to hear of the recent death of Mr. Peter DeWolfe and wish to extend our deepest sympathies to his wife and their families. We have not only lost a great citizen of Arnprior, but also a friend.

Whew! Shopping is hard work. While Beau Benoit takes a seat during this year’s St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church rummage sale, Oct. 21, his mom Nadine Peters works through clothes and keeps an eye out for her nearby daughters. It was fortunate the sale took place indoors at the Daniel and McGonigal streets church; outside was wet, windy and cool.

THIS WEEK’S FEATURE

The second annual Choirfest was held at Calvary Pentecostal church on Saturday, Oct. 15. This evening was designed a fundraiser for the oncology unit at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital. Over the course of the evening, $800 was raised to help this important unit. It is fitting to say a heartfelt thank you to all those who gave their time and talent to raise this money. It was a moving evening that somehow accidently developed the theme of grace as it moved along. While the groups choose their own music for the performance, yet somehow the theme of ‘grace’ presented itself in a melodious and moving fashion. The evening saw performances by choirs and groups from St. Paul’s Anglican Church,

Trinity-St. Andrew’s, Calvary Pentecostal youth group, The Christian Reform Group, and The Sidekicks. Marie Brydges performed a beautifully moving rendition of the old hymn Amazing Grace and It is well with my Soul. Lawrence Mahusky had the birds and the deer lift our spirits to heaven with Fly Like a Bird and As the Deer, while Jim Miller sang about the Old Family Bible. His friend Will showed us a way to allow humour to lift the spirit in a light hearted way, and Marlyn Kelly sang about This is Amazing Grace. The organizers under the leadership of Joanne Longtin, organist at St. Paul’s, are grateful to all those who took part and helped in any way to make this second annual choirfest a success.

November is...

National Diabetes Awareness Month

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic, often debilitating and sometimes fatal disease, in which the body either cannot produce insulin or cannot properly use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that controls the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Diabetes leads to high blood sugar levels, which can damage organs, blood vessels and nerves. The body needs insulin to use sugar as an energy source.

What is the pancreas and what does it do?

The pancreas is an organ that sits behind the stomach and releases hormones into the digestive system. In the healthy body, when blood sugar levels get too high, special cells in the pancreas (called beta cells) release insulin. Insulin is a hormone and it causes cells to take in sugar to use as energy or to store as fat. This causes blood sugar levels to go back down.

Signs and symptoms can include the following: • Unusual thirst • Frequent urination • Weight change (gain or loss) • Extreme fatigue or lack of energy • Blurred vision • Frequent or recurring infections • Cuts and bruises that are slow to heal • Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet • Trouble getting or maintaining an erection If you have any of these symptoms, it is important to contact your health-care provider right away. Even if you don’t have symptoms, if you are 40 or older, you should still get checked. It is important to recognize, however, that many people who have type 2 diabetes may display no symptoms.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the human body had an “early alert system” that advised us when Type 1 diabetes occurs when the immune system something was about to go wrong with our mistakenly attacks and kills the beta cells of the pancreas. health? Prediabetes offers a warning and gives No, or very little, insulin is released into the body. As us a chance to change the future. What is type 1 diabetes?

a result, sugar builds up in the blood instead of being used as energy. About five to 10 per cent of people with diabetes have type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes generally develops in childhood or adolescence, but can develop in adulthood. Type 1 diabetes is always treated with insulin. Meal planning also helps with keeping blood sugar at the right levels. Type 1 diabetes also includes latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), the term used to describe the small number of people with apparent type 2 diabetes who appear to have immune-mediated loss of pancreatic beta cells.

What is type 2 diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body can’t properly use the insulin that is released (called insulin insensitivity) or does not make enough insulin. As a result, sugar builds up in the blood instead of being used as energy. About 90 per cent of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes more often develops in adults, but children can be affected. Depending on the severity of type 2 diabetes, it may be managed through physical activity and meal planning, or may also require medications and/or insulin to control blood sugar more effectively.

What is gestational diabetes?

Athirdtypeofdiabetes, gestationaldiabetes, isatemporary condition that occurs during pregnancy. It affects approximately two to four per cent of all pregnancies (in the non-Aboriginal population) and involves an increased risk of developing diabetes for both mother and child.

There are many signs and symptoms that can indicate diabetes. 46 Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, October 27, 2016

Prediabetes refers to blood glucose (sugar) levels that are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes (i.e. a fasting plasma glucose level of 7.0 mmol/L or higher). Although not everyone with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes, many people will. It is important to know if you have prediabetes, because research has shown that some long-term complications associated with diabetes – such as heart disease and nerve damage – may begin during prediabetes.

Risk factors

Like type 2 diabetes, prediabetes can occur without you knowing it, so being aware of your risks and getting tested are important. This is especially true if you have prediabetes as part of the “metabolic syndrome,” meaning you also have high blood pressure, high levels of LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol) and triglycerides, low levels of HDL cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol) and excess fat around the waist. The risk for type 2 diabetes is higher as you grow older, so the Canadian Diabetes Association recommends screening by testing fasting plasma glucose for everyone once they reach age 40 and every three years after that. If you have risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes, you should be tested more frequently or start regular screening earlier.

The good news

Research has shown that if you take steps to manage your blood glucose when you have prediabetes, you can delay or prevent type 2 diabetes from developing. You may be able to reduce blood glucose (sugar) levels with simple lifestyle changes, such as increasing your physical activity and enjoying a healthy, low-fat meal plan.

www.insideottawavalley.com Losing even a modest amount of weight (five to 10 per cent of total body weight) through healthy eating and regular physical activity can make a huge difference in your health and quality of life. When lifestyle changes are not enough to normalize blood glucose, your health-care provider might recommend that you use oral medication. If you have prediabetes, you are at increased risk for heart disease or stroke. Your doctor may wish to also treat or counsel you about cardiovascular risk factors such as tobacco use, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Theimportantthingtorememberaboutprediabetes is that it doesn’t always lead to diabetes. If you have prediabetes, taking steps to manage your blood glucose gives you a chance to change your future to one that does not include type 2 diabetes.
