The distinctive design isolates the critical sound reproducing components; platter, main bearing, tonearm, and cartridge on the top platform from the motor, switch, wiring and feet which are mounted on the bottom platform. Viso-Elastic cones separate the two platforms and provide vibration damping. The MMF-5.1 comes complete with Music Hall’s Magic 3 cartridge mounted. The Magic 3 is specially built by Ortofon for Music Hall.

When it comes to the C 556, NAD has spent lavishly on the parts of the turntable that define its performance, and has left off the features that do nothing to improve the sound.

Arnprior town council is considering a plan that would shelter residents from sharp increases and borrowing costs related to water and wastewater. The problem: the plan includes an annual above the rate-of-inflation increase for the next 10 years. So today’s typical $725 annual bill could, by 2025, jump to $1,026. At an Oct. 21 special meeting, council received a water and wastewater rate study from independent consultant Watson & Associates Economists. Delivered by Gary Scandlan, who has done similar studies for other communities, the study offers three options to pay for water and related infrastructure replacements. The first calls for a 5 per cent annual increase to both the base charges and volume rate sides of the water bill. That’s about $3 a month on the

typical bill. The second says to raise both by 3.5 per cent or about $2.10 a month. $2.75 per month

Council is leaning toward the staffrecommend third, considered a hybrid at $2.75 a month. It would increase the base charges to reflect up to 30 per cent of fixed revenue by 2025; increase the vast majority of customers’ base charges by $1 per year; increase all other costumers’ base charges by the percentage increases from the majority; water volume rates increasing by an average 1.1 per cent annually; wastewater volume rates increasing by an average of 1.24 per cent annually. Most customers (3,115 of 3,258) get a monthly base charge of $9 because they have a relatively small 5/8-inch water pipe.

Grants could reduce water costs Hydro rate jump Continued from page 1

That number would go up by $1 per month next year, another $1 per month for 2017 and so on; to increase the operating budget and bring stability to extremely wet or dry years (which impacts water availability). On the wastewater side the $9 would go to $10, and then increase by 1 per cent per year. Arnprior’s current $9 is at the lower end of a comparison with neighbouring communities. Staff was pressed on possible future grants, and working that money into the current scenario. It was agreed that these numbers are on the conservative side; that increases might be less; and if money is found elsewhere council will know about it during five-year updates or sooner. Town staff and Scandlan like the third option because it puts the emphasis on the base cost, meaning the money needed to replace pipes and treatment facilities. It has $145 million in existing assets. Some are dated, though, going back to the early 1900s. The town wants to save money to pay for replacing them. But reserves will be depleted over the next decade for the downtown revitalization. Unless the town starts to sock away money, it will be forced to borrow at interest. Tax dollars would then go to lenders, not infrastructure. So the plan isn’t about scrambling to cover immediate costs. It’s costing out the lifecycle of services, something the province expects before handing out grants to help pay for infrastructure. Scandlan said the town is in pretty good shape when it comes to drinking water and wastewater. “You are doing a lot of good things,” he said. “Dealing with infrastructure and building reserves. It’s serving you well to maintain sustainability. I think you are in good

shape.” However, almost half of council worried aloud over how residents would take the plan, even if few or none of them oppose it. Reeve Walter Stack said water-billing is a “sensitive issue” in Arnprior, following the 2010 fiasco that saw wild fluctuations in billing. He talked of the lone senior citizen on a fixed income. They use little on the volume side so would be better off if rates went up substantially. Instead, with rates jumping on the base side they are paying for future pipes and equipment. He also said many feel bills are high enough. “A lot of people feel it is very high already,” Stack said. “Thirty dollars a year in some budgets is tough on top of everything else. Hydro is going up, too.” Mayor David Reid agreed that “educating the public” on the plan is important. He said council’s top priority – or one of them – is safe drinking water; councillors are even personally liable to ensure it. So having money to make necessary upgrades is crucial. And the “true costs” of providing the service go well beyond the pipe leading to each faucet. He also said explaining the comparables with other communities, even Ottawa where many believe water is much cheaper, is important. But even with a challenging public relations battle, he is committed to the plan. “I think most people realize there are a lot of infrastructure costs before the tap gets turned on,” Reid said. “We as a council will do what we can to make sure our rates are as reasonable as they can be while ensuring we meet our obligations. “We only want to take what is necessary.” Council votes on the plan at an upcoming meeting.

Ontarians will be paying more for electricity on Nov. 1, a twice-a-year tradition now dating back a decade. On Oct. 15, the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) announced its winter time-of-use rates, which will be in effect from Nov. 1 until April 30. With the increase, off-peak rates will go from 8 cents/kWh to 8.3 cents/kWh, mid-peak will rise from 12.2 cents/kWh to 12.8 cents/kWh, and on-peak rates will rise from 16.1 cents/kWh to 17.5 cents/kWh. Tiered customers will see a hike from 11 cents/kWh to 11.6 cents/ kWh. “The price is increasing by approximately $4.42 per month on the ‘Electricity’ line, and about 3.4 per cent on the total bill, for a household that consumes 800 kWh per month,” stated the OEB on its website. The hike comes after a 4.6 per cent rise in May of this year, and before an about 7 per cent overall rise in bills after the Ontario Clean

Energy Benefit is removed from bills on Jan. 1, 2016, simultaneously with the removal of the debt-retirement charge. This means the cost of electricity will have risen by roughly 15 per cent between last New Year’s and the coming one, or, a 66 per cent increase in rates since 2010. When asked about the impact of the rate increases on the public, Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi defended the OEB as an independent, arms-length regulator free of outside interference, and touted the province’s strategies at mitigating the impact of the increases. “One being the new program that will start on Jan. 1, which is the Ontario Energy Savings Plan for low-income Ontarians, giving them a break depending on their income and the size of their family, to ensure there is a discount or rebate provided to them,” said Naqvi. That program was announced last March. See HYDRO on page 3

Nick Smith pool set to reopen in November Scott Campbell

scottcampbell@metroland.com

Council was given an update on the 38-year-old swimming pool during their regular council meeting on Monday. Arnprior parks and recreation director Glenn Arthur spoke about the rehabilitation work at Nick Smith

Centre. Programs have been cancelled since September to allow for the project to be done. $382K restoration

St. Lawrence Pools was contracted to do the work at a budgeted cost of $382,000. They have added new skimmers, jets, pipes, drains and have

cut the marmorite by hand to replace it inside the pool tank. “There’s been a lot of manual labour,” said Arthur. “A lot more than what I expected.” The pool is anticipated to reopen in the latter end of November. Arthur noted the programs should be in full swing by January.

Hydro customers to support lower income Continued from page 2

It would see a small charge added to the hydro bills of non-eligible ratepayers to fund the program. At the time, Jennifer Beaudry, spokesperson for Ontario energy minister Bob Chiarelli, said the program’s cost would amount to “an increase of about 70 cents a month” on ratepayer’s bills. This means a single person making $28,001 a year will be paying more on their hydro bill to provide a $20 a month subsidy for someone making $28,000 a year. The cut-off is slightly above the median income for unattached individuals in Ontario. The average increase in hourly wages for an Ontario worker,

according to Statistics Canada, rose 3.1 per cent between September 2014 and September 2015. Of the populace, women saw their wages rise by 1.7 per cent. “We’ve taken a lot of steps in cleaning up our (electricity) system, making sure we’ve taken coal out of our system, - which was the cheapest form of producing electricity, but costly in terms of health,” said Naqvi. Expensive but healthful

“Given that we’ve taken that out, other forms of generating electricity are expensive, but we’re also explor-

ing ways of importing more electricity from Quebec … all those steps combined will result in making sure electricity rates in Ontario are competitive in North America.” In its announcement, the OEB states that increased costs from Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) nuclear and hydro-electric operations amount to one third of the rate increase, with the cost of renewable energy making up another third. The OEB states that customers can save money by switching their usage to off-peak hours, which are less than half the expense of on-peak hours. However, off-peak rates have risen steadily in addition to on-peak.

Spooky crafts for Halloween Once a month, Arnprior’s Recreation Department hosts either a craft or cooking workshop. The focus was on crafts for Oct. 16 at the Nick Smith Centre, reports program co-ordinator Rick Gwalchmai. The group was working on creating ghosts. The cost is $25 for three hours, typically on a Friday.

Lack of Island View Suites poll irks Gallant Re-elected Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke Conservative MP Cheryl Gallant has taken issue with a decision not to locate a mobile polling station at Island View Retirement Suites in Arnprior for the federal election.

Gallant made an official complaint to Elections Canada prior to the vote, pointing out there was a poll at the retirement home in the last provincial election. She noted the Arnprior Villa and Autumn Leaves

Lodge in Braeside, the other main retirement homes in the area, have mobile polls. “For the residents at Island View, people who have devoted their life to this country, including veterans who were prepared

to sacrifice their life for their country, we owe it to them to give every opportunity to complete their civic duty,” she said in a news release. “For some of them, they have never missed an election. This

could be their last election.” Gallant said she has received complaints about poll locations in every election she has run. Some residents in Calabogie can see a poll location in their community from their homes, yet are expected to drive to Burnstown to vote, she said, responding to complaints in this

election from that area. She stressed that Elections Canada is an independent agency and MPs have no control over such decisions as the placement of polling stations. “I am hoping that by going public, pressure can be put on Elections Canada to change their position,” she said.

ers will not have to shoulder as much of the burden in the future.” For MPs who retired or were defeated, taxpayers contributed $17 for every $1 put into the plan by an MP towards their pension. After Jan. 1 the ratio will gradually shift to $1.60 in taxpayer contributions for every $1 put in by an MP or Senator. Wudrick noted that eight former MPs will gather more than $100,000-plus a year in pension income including outgoing Conservative cabinet ministers John Duncan ($132,394), Peter Mac-

Kay ($117,746) and Bernard Valcourt ($116,987). In terms of lifetime estimated benefits to age 90, 21 MPs are projected to collect more than $3 million, including MacKay ($5.9 million), Liberal Gerry Byrne ($5.2 million) and Conservative Rob Anders ($4.7 million). “These pension changes are a welcome step towards broader public sector pension reform,” said Wudrick. “We encourage the new government to take the necessary steps to ensure government employee pensions are more in line with what the vast majority of Canadians working in the private sector expect to receive.”

Narrow victory for Gallant in federal student vote They may be too young to vote, but thousands of Renfrew County public school board students took part in the 2015 Student Vote held various days over the week prior to the federal election Oct. 19. Student Vote is a parallel election for students under the voting age, coinciding with federal, provincial, territorial and municipal elections. The purpose is to provide young Canadians with an opportunity to experience the voting process firsthand and build the habits of informed and engaged citizenship. Since 2003, 26 Student Vote programs have been conducted across Canada. Individual schools register with studentvote.ca and are sent all the material they will need to hold an election in their school including pedagogical materials, posters and election supplies. Students take on the role of deputy returning officers and polls clerks, and cast ballots for the official election candidates. The results are tabulated nationally and by riding, and shared with

media. From Oct. 13 to 16, 850,000 votes from more than 6,000 schools representing all 338 federal ridings were counted. It was a landslide for the Liberals who collected 226 seats and 335,206 votes. The Conservatives came second with 70 seats and 231,631 votes, the New Democratic Party came third with 40 seats and 174,794 votes, and the Green Party earned four seats and 107,201 votes – a similar result to the adult election. In Renfrew-NipissingPembroke, things also were similar to the federal results but closer with Conservative incumbent Cheryl Gallant winning with 30 per cent of the vote, Liberal Jeff Lehoux earning 29 per cent, the NDP’s Dan McCarthy 16 per cent, Independent Hec Clouthier 14 per cent and the Green’s Stefan Klietsch 10 per cent of the vote. RCDSB schools participating included A.J. Charbonneau, Arnprior District High School and 13 others up the Valley, including RCI and Central from Renfrew.

Webster said the four-day conference discussed current student issues such as recent school staff labour negotiations, board student trustee election processes and Aboriginal issues, to name a few. Following his presentation, the students engaged in conversation on a wide-ranging host of topics including building a sense of community, school course availability, mental health, drugs and alcohol, Lesbian, Gay,

Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning (LGBTQ) issues, dress codes and smoking. Nearing the end of the day, Webster spoke of hoping to improve communications between the students and their board representative. He spoke of the possible creation of a student senate involving one representative of each school’s student council and himself to meet regularly and discuss current events and “be effective at dealing with issues.” “Every school brought valuable insight and discussion to the table today; initiatives both school-based and board-wide were effectively shared and planned for the coming months,” said Webster following the summit. “We’re all looking forward to working together as part of a really great group of innovative student leaders.”

A gathering of Renfrew County public school student leaders created a healthy buzz of conversation on issues affecting high school students. The RCDSB Student Summit, chaired by Student Trustee Connor Webster Oct. 14, brought together student leaders from across Renfrew County representing all seven public secondary schools across the Upper Ottawa Valley. “As students, our voices are important and we have to speak loud,” said Webster, a Fellowes High School student. The 20 students are all representative of their school’s student councils and they are often the students organizing fundraising events or activist issues at their schools. The annual summit brings all those students together in one room to share ideas,

Arnprior Aerospace marks 10th anniversary in business Scott Campbell

scottcampbell@metroland.com

SCOTT CAMPBELL/METROLAND

Arnprior Aerospace CEO John Wilbur arrived from Connecticut to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the company in Arnprior and to say a few words to employees and visitors. President Tom Melvin is among those listening in during the brief lunchtime ceremony.

Arnprior Aerospace celebrated 10 years in town on Oct.22. There was even cake. It was Oct. 24, 2005 when the facility opened its doors as Arnprior Aerospace. The location has been around much longer, as the plant was part of the Boeing Company for 45 years. “It is a special day,” said president Tom Melvin. “We have sustained this business. We have more employees locally and there are quality jobs here that are becoming fewer and fewer (in Ontario’s industrial sector).” Company CEO John Wilbur flew in from Connecticut to help celebrate the anniversary. The two offered brief

remarks during the lunch period to mark the occasion. The more than 300 employees of Arnprior Aerospace were split into two groups as the cafeteria could not fit them all. History

Established in town in 1954, Boeing put Arnprior on the map for aviation. In 2005, American Industrial Acquisition Corp. bought the business from Boeing. “We wouldn’t be here without you,” Wilbur told employees. “Boeing didn’t believe we would be here 10 years from now, but we have proved them wrong and are proud to be here.” The 165,000-sq.-ft facility is involved in design, fabri-

cation, precision machining, special processing, assembly, kitting and integration of products mainly for the airplane industry. “We were excited when we heard the facility was available,” said Wilbur, recalling the purchase from Boeing. “It was one of the leanest commercial sites and we thought it was a good fit.” Arnprior Aerospace continues to grow. The organization recently marked five years of their 75,000-sq.-ft facility in Mexico. In 2012, they purchased a 60, 000-sq.-ft location in Portland in the U.S. Wilbur is already considering what may lie ahead for the businesses. “The world economics are still changing,” said Wilbur. “We are optimistic and we will evolve.”

Hundreds participate in annual Unity Run Andy Kalnins

An unforgiving wind from the north west, temperatures just a few degrees above freezing, and threatening skies did not deter 275 intrepid walkers and runners from taking part in Arnprior’s annual Unity Run. This year in particular, participants welcomed the warmth of the auditorium of the Nick Smith Centre as everybody gathered for post run drinks, snacks, draw prizes and the presentation of awards. Race Director Jane Dowd said, “The run would be impossible without the support of local business and this year we were overwhelmed with the donations and prizes that we received. I also have to give a shout out of thanks to all the race day volunteers that helped out in so many ways. The OPP and the McNab Braeside Fire Department were wonderful as always in keep us safe.” Kelly O’Rourke, speaking on behalf of the McNab Braeside Fire Department stated, “Community Living Renfrew County South gives so much to the comminuty that it is wonderful for the fire department to give a little back.” The running season is not over for the Prior Runners club as on Nov. 21 there is the Tuff Tartan Trek in support of the Fountain in Arnprior and on Dec. 18 is the fourth Annual Solstice Run in support of Galilee Centre.

The race results are as follows:

• 1km walk male: first Trevor Cavanagh 10:40, second Jason Baker 18:31, third Eric Fevez 22:19; • 1km walk female: first Leanne Hiller 10:24, second Abby Hiller 10:24, third Andrea Hill n/a; • 3km walk male: first Joel Veale 20:06, second Kieran Major 22:37, third Archie Arthur 28:06; • 3km walk female: first Storie Pumpkin 23:34, second Maggie Kenny 23:58, third Christina Veale 26:27; • 5km walk male: first Ken Knapp 42:13, second Eric Teschke 52:35, third Ralph Chown 54:39; • 5km walk female: first Kathy Knapp 43:01, second Karen Dotto 45:56, third Gail Okum 46:52. Recognize deserving youth

Speak up about misplaced polling stations To the Editor: Many in the Ottawa Valley were very inconvenienced with the voting stations chosen by Elections Canada, myself included, although not as much as many others.  I live within three kilometres of a polling station in Burnstown (actually three stations there), five kilometres of a voting station near Glasgow, and have a Renfrew address. Yet the voting station chosen for me was in Arnprior, 20+ kilometres away.  When I phoned to say there was a mistake, I was told there was nothing that could be done to change it.  These Elections Canada errors have affected many people in many ways.  Besides getting voters upset, it has taken needless extra time and energy out of a day and has wasted gas, with many people driving lengthy distances. Some people ended up not voting, which is a shame. These blatant errors should not have been allowed to happen. The voting lists by station should have been reviewed by someone knowledgeable of the geography and corrections made

before it was too late in the process - well before the voting cards were created and mailed.  They did have four years to get it right. If you are one on these voters, please go to the Elections Canada website and formally write your complaint/recommendation under ‘Contact Us.’ Either form is easy to use. It is only through written comments to Elections Canada that we can help ensure changes are made before the next election.  Everyone should have the right to vote at the polling station closest to their residence.  If Elections Canada chooses a different polling station than this, the voter should be able to go to the closer station and be allowed to vote there. Let’s change the process and not allow bureaucratic errors dictate where you vote!  Hey, let’s even ask them to add some technology where one could vote at any polling station or, should I dare say it, be able to vote from home.   Irene Robillard McNab-Braeside

Every community has young stars, and while they may not have achieved celebrity status, they deserve to be recognized for the feats that they have accomplished. These young stars, our future leaders, are none other than Ontario’s youth. These young individuals who have worked hard to make their community a better place by volunteering for various organizations, making donations, saving lives and maintaining top grade averages. They can be found everywhere, in your homes, at school, on the field, and at church. If you know a young person who deserves praise for their actions and involvement in the community, nominate them today for the Ontario Junior Citizen Awards. Our newspaper strongly supports this program here in the Ottawa Valley because we support the growth of our community. We look forward to providing recognition for such outstanding young people who continue to be shining examples of leaders in our community. The Ontario Junior Citizens Award program is co-ordinated by the Ontario Community Newspaper Association (OCNA), of which this newspaper is a member. The program is sponsored by TD Bank Group and the Insurance Bureau of Canada. Any resident of Ontario aged 6 to 17 (must be at least 6 years but no older than

17 years old by Nov. 30) is eligible to be chosen as a final recipient of this award. Anyone can nominate someone as long as this young individual has excelled in one of these five areas: A person involved in worthwhile community service, a special young person contributing to their community while living with a physical or psychological limitation, an individual who has performed an act of heroism in the past year, excellence in achievement in fields such as the arts or athletics, and good kids who show a commitment to make life better for others and do more than is normally expected of someone their age. Up to 12 nominees will be chosen as recipients for the provincial award and honoured at a special ceremony in Toronto sometime next spring. Any nominated young person will be personally presented with a certificate of recognition and have their contributions showcased in this newspaper. Nomination deadlines for the Ontario Junior Citizen Awards is Nov. 30. Nomination forms are available at www.ocna. org/juniorcitizen or by calling OCNA at 905-639-8720, ext 4438. Make sure you aid in the growth of our community and pay tribute to our leaders of today and tomorrow by nominating someone today.

Outgoing PM served his country well To the Editor: While the outcome of this election was disappointing, I am reminded of Sir Winston Churchill who after leading Great Britain alone for two years, and then with our allies to the end of the Second World War - was callously rejected by his own people in the first election held in Great Britain following the greatest conflict against tyranny and evil in the history of man.

PM Harper has also acquitted himself most admirably during his tenure as our nation’s leader, and as a consequence of his steady hand and principled leadership, in times to come every true Canadian will reflect upon him as one of the greatest prime ministers to serve our dominion since Confederation in 1867. Alas how appropriately relevant at this juncture in time are the old adages, “No good

And I fear for the future of our dominion under the leadership of a ‘drama teacher’ being counselled by the socialist planners whispering in his ear. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Arnprior Council 2082

Expect more shenanigans from our MP

PRESENTS

7th ANNUAL LADIES SHOPPING NIGHT FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2015 4:00pm - 10:00pm

To the Editor: For many of us, the election results were cause for despair. Granted, former Prime Minister Stephen Harper (what a lovely phrase) will no longer be actively undermining our multicultural society, institutions, and international standing, but here in our pleasant little riding of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke incumbent fossil Cheryl Gallant has won yet another kick at the can and at our reputation. Don’t get me wrong. I am ecstatic at the Conservative defeat. The minor detail of who composes the new government and the form it takes is irrelevant, really. We would still be better off had

we elected the NDP, the Greens, the Flying Yogic Party, or even a cuttlefish (which, incidentally, would have demonstrated more compassion and empathy than our former PM). Not even the unpleasant fact that the new government has a majority of seats (never a good thing) can dampen my joy.  We’re finally done with Harper’s rule and may actually have opportunity to recover. And yet ... many are saddened by Gallant’s local victory. What does her re-election say about us, our ability to parse deception or think with our heads instead of our spinal columns? Dry your tears, my friends. With

her party no longer in charge, she now has even less influence than she did as the backbencher too extreme to speak to the electorate, the press, or anyone, really. In fact, without Stephen Harper around to micromanage and muzzle her outbursts, we can look forward to all sorts of hilarious shenanigans. We’re bound to make national headlines often, and perhaps even international ones. So weep not, lovers of comedy. It’s a great day to be a Canadian, and at least an interesting one to be in this riding. Andrew Fogarasi Arnprior

To the Editor: This refers to the article ‘Biologist to discuss pesticides and pollinators’ (Chronicle-Guide Oct. 8) presented by Dr. James Coupland, director of FarmForest Research. This was a very informative evening. However, it did raise some questions, such as Dr. Coupland’s use the term ‘pasture’ as important for pollinators. Does pasture include fields cultivated for cash crops such as soybeans and corn? I understood Dr. Coupland to state the twoyear moratorium on neonicotinoid use in Europe was a typical cautionary approach by the Europeans. Was the moratorium not more likely due to the high level of neonic residues found in the soil and water (200 ppb, while a safe level in California is 2 ppb) in Holland where these pesticides are widely used? Dr. Coupland stated the Ontario Beekeepers have launched a law suit against the producers of ‘neonics’. Is this not due to the heavy losses of bees, honey productions declines and residue impacts on honeybees, honey and beeswax as analyzed by the Pest Management Regulatory Agency of Health Canada? It may be useful to repeat part of a letter I wrote to the Chronicle of Feb. 13, 2014 as follows: The Ontario Beekeepers Association recently reported “Ontario bees are in unprecedented

peril due to the pervasive use of neonicotinoid (neonics) pesticides. In the last two years alone, Ontario has seen a 35 per cent decline in honey bees.” Buried in this number is the alarming increase in bee mortality in 2013 over that of 2012, a 38 per cent increase. The future does not look good for the honey bee industry in Canada, particularly if one looks into the scientific analysis of neonics. According to the ‘Significance’ publication of The Royal Statistical Society (June 2013) of the United Kingdom, neonicotinoid family of chemicals (which includes imidacloprid and clothianidin) are ‘nicotinie acetylcholine receptor agonists’, meaning they bind to and block open nerve receptors in the insect brain, causing paralysis and death. Most neonics are toxic to insects in minute quantities. One gram of clothianidin, not much more than a salt sachet, is enough to deliver an LD50 (lethal does to 50 per cent of individuals) to 250 million honeybees.” Also on, Tuesday Dec. 1, the Macnamara Field Naturalist Club is hosting Dr. Stacey Robinson, of the National Wildlife Reserved Centre, to talk on the effort of neonicotinoid on amphibians. Pipeline spokesperson had misleading facts To the Editor: While reading your article ‘TransCanada Energy East dashes Horton Township’s pipe dreams’ (Chronicle-Guide, Oct. 15), I noticed an inaccurate statement from Energy East spokesperson Jon Pitcher. Mr. Pitcher managed to squeeze three misleading falsehoods into the following quote: If we were to transport that via train or truck, which right now is the most common way of transporting this energy through Canada, it would amount

to just under 4,500 extra trucks on the road, going from Alberta to New Brunswick, or just over 1,500 rail cars on the tracks.” Here are the facts that counter Mr. Pitcher’s misinformation: 1) Trains and trucks are not the most common way of transporting energy through Canada. In reality, pipelines carry the overwhelming majority of crude oil in Canada. See CRUDE, page 12

Crude oil wouldn’t be shipped by truck if pipeline rejected Continued from page 10

See a 2015 report from Canadian Association of Petroleum producers at www.capp.ca/publications-and-statistics/publications/264673.  2) It is ridiculous to suggest that if Energy East were not built, raw crude oil would be shipped by oil tanker trucks on Canadian roads. Tanker trucks are used for moving small quantities of oil or refined products short distances, not exporting vast quantities of crude oil. There are zero trucks currently carrying raw crude oil through

Ontario for this purpose. Raw crude oil is never shipped in any significant quantity by truck in Canada. Mr. Pitcher’s claims on this are entirely false. 3) If Energy East weren’t built, 1,500 rail cars would not end up on the tracks going from Alberta to New Brunswick. Shipping crude oil over that distance by train is far too expensive to be profitable for the oil industry. It would only be profitable for shipments travelling by rail to reach the much closer west coast of Canada or the U.S. for export, and even then, it would be much more

expensive. In reality, without Energy East , most of the oil the pipeline might have carried will instead stay safely in the ground. Energy East is an unnecessary export pipeline for export. We simply don’t need it.  Residents of the Ottawa Valley area should be asking why TransCanada feels the need to make up facts in order to sell this risky project to communities.

This 2015 graph from the Canadian Association of Petroleum producers indicates pipelines carry the overwhelming majority of crude oil in Canada, not trains and trucks.

A predator’s life is seldom easy why in some winters large numbers of Snowy Owls or Great Gray Owls appear in our area. But for every live owl we see, there are others that have starved or experienced a fatal accident during the journey. Winter brings greater hardships because cold temperatures and deep snow make life even more difficult for the hunters. There are no soup kitchens or Salvation Army shelters for wild animals and if a predator is too weak or slow to capture its prey, it will die; in the wild, old age is a myth. This is particularly true for wolves and coyotes, animals that work particularly hard to acquire a meal. Life is so difficult for these predators that each year in Algonquin Provincial Park half of the Eastern Wolf population dies, with starvation being one of the main reasons. But there are a few animals whose predatory lifestyle does seem to be Herons swallow fish, even as large as this sucker, considerably easier than that of a wolf. whole. For any predatory animal, life offers formidable challenges. First a predator must locate its prey, then capture and kill it. And whether the target is a mouse, bird, or deer, those three actions involve time, effort and risk. Prey species are equipped with claws, hooves, teeth, and sharp bills, and predators can acquire serious injury or even be killed when acquiring a meal. And meals, of course, are never guaranteed. When food becomes scarce, predatory animals are sometimes forced to travel great distances looking for new resources. That is

CUSTOM 2016 WALL CALENDAR

Great Blue Herons are one of these. These majestic birds are well known to anyone who travels by water, or spends time along the shores of rivers and lakes. These giant birds are fish eaters and thus can be encountered near almost any aquatic habitat. A heron’s patience is laudable as it stands motionless in shallow water, waiting for a fish to swim into reach. When one does, with lethal precision the heron’s long neck shoots forward, and its spearlike bill snatches the fish in a split second. The prey is swallowed whole, usually headfirst and still alive.

Internally, the heron’s gizzard grinds up the meal so thoroughly that even bones, which usually pose a problem for mammals, pass through the digestive tract without difficulty. A heron’s diet also includes frogs and large insects, and, perhaps surprisingly, small mammals such as voles and chipmunks. Voles are the reason herons can be seen standing in fields. In Algonquin Park, Great Blue Herons have been known to land in public campgrounds where chipmunks, used to being fed by campers, come running up to the long legs for

a handout. Instead of getting food, they become the food! Currently along the Rideau Canal near Carleton University, herons are feasting on fish. The canal is being drained and fish are becoming concentrated in shallow pools of water. Recently on an early morning bird walk, my students and I watched a young heron taking advantage of the bounty at very close range. For even that inexperienced youngster, catching a meal was just like shooting fish in a barrel! The Nature Number is 613-3872503; email is mruntz@start.ca.

Four new hangars added at Arnprior Airport Sound. In August, a group left the Arnprior Airport in a six-seat twin-engine Seneca for a special trip to Alaska. The adventure took the three 8,000 miles in 60 hours of flying time. The plane’s owner Barry Holtz of Rochester, New York stopped at Arnprior to pick up pilot Todd LaFontaine and photographer Dr. Edward Whelan, both of Ottawa, for the flight northwest. They were to meet pilot Tom Van Buskirk of Rochester in Anchorage. The crew told airport manager Dan Lynch that they had committed to the trip to Alaska in May as a ‘bucket list’ item for all four participants. Their adventures were chronicled online at http:// n15018alaskabound.com/.

The Arnprior Airport is a happening place these days. The Airport continues to grow with the completion of three and possibly four new hangars this year, with one or two more being planned to be completed by next June. With the loss of revenue from the Mile High Parachute Club, it was important to the airport to compensate by bringing in other aircraft to maintain its revenue stream. The ladies can have a fun night out while the men stay at home. St. John Chrysostom Parish Hall will be filled Friday, Nov. 6 with more than 55 vendors for shopping. It will allow women to get a headstart on the Christmas rush, said organizer Sonia Mullins-Forget of the seventh annual Lady’s Shopping Night. “I was approached back in March by the Knights of Columbus to be the new organizer of ladies night after one stepped down,” said Mullins-Forget. The success of her Rock for CHEO silent auction and dance had left an impression on the Knights. The annual fundraiser was a huge undertaking and Mullins-Forget decided to call it quits when she had a daughter in 2012. “I agreed to take over the venture (Lady’s Shopping Night) as long as one of the fundraiser (beneficiaries) was to be CHEO,” she said. Mullins-Forget had been a patient when she was a child and even worked at the hospital for a stint. CHEO also saved her daughter’s life at only four weeks old. “I’ve seen CHEO from every aspect and it has become really close to my heart.”

The Arnprior District High School girls basketball teams keep winning even though unexpected gymnasium repairs are forcing them to play their home games on the road. For the third straight week, the senior and junior girls teams had to move their games to their opponents’ courts. A crucial showdown against RCI Tuesday (after press deadline) was moved to Renfrew from Arnprior. All four teams are in the thick of the race for first place in the Upper Ottawa Valley high school league. With the repairs taking longer than expected, there is some concern the teams will have to play next week’s playoff games on the road instead of hosting them in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. Principal Neil Farmer explained that a drain back-up last month caused flooding. Water seeped under the gymnasium floor causing one end to heave. Hitman-email scam threatens person in Arnprior Following a recent incident in Arnprior, the Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is warning the public of an old scam making the rounds that can be quite frightening if you have never heard of it. OPP explain how the scam works: You receive a scary text or email message. It appears to be from a hitman, saying that he/she’s been hired to kill you. In order to spare your life, he asks you to contact him immediately and pay several thousand dollars. “We’ve had at least one incident we’re aware of, in Arnprior,” said OPP spokesperson Const. Janice Sawbridge. “The same day they received the email, Tuesday, Oct. 20, they contacted the police.” Of course, your life isn’t in dan-

ger, say police. It’s really a fraudster trying to scare you into handing over money. This scam has been around for a while, but it’s making the rounds once again. Police say if you receive the message you should report it. Contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by phone or online to report all frauds, even if you recognize the scam and were not defrauded. The phone number is 1-888-495-850 and the email address is www.antifraudcentre.ca . Do not respond to the message, say police. Don’t engage the scammer in conversation, that just confirms they have an active email address or phone number. The request in the Arnprior case was for thousands of dollars. “We believe the email originated

in Russia,” said Sawbridge, noting often the scams come from somewhere outside of Canada and there isn’t much police can do in terms of tracking down the perpetrators. If you are targeted, take steps to protect yourself. “Take a deep breath, and whatever you do, don’t send them money,” said Sawbridge. “Certainly in Ontario, we’ve seen this one before. It is alarming if you see an email or text that says ‘I know a lot about you and I’ve been hired to kill you.’” A lot of people do fall victim, she explained, and those who do should not be embarrassed. “It’s not because they’re not smart people,” she said. “These fraudsters are professional.” It’s important for members of the

and don’t be victimized. The centre tracks the occurrences and can provide assistance, noted Sawbridge. Just in Ontario alone in September 2015, there were 1,382 fraud attempts with a reported loss of $1,070,940.

Crop funds available this winter 496 BRAE-LOCH RD

233 NEEDHAM SIDE RD. PAKENHAM

This winter, Ontario is providing financial support to farmers to better ensure the survival of apples, tender fruit, berries and specialty crops. Ontario’s cold winter months can cause damage to crops and reduce yields. To help growers manage this risk and ensure a steady, competitive supply of Ontario grown food, the province will share up to 35 per cent of the cost of weather mitigation equipment such as portable or fixed wind machines, heat-

ing and air movement devices, insulating devices, overhead irrigation systems, and crop covers. Growers can be eligible to receive up to a maximum of $31,500 per project. Growers can apply for funding through the Ontario Crop and Soil Improvement Association, which administers the program. The association will accept applications at several times over the next couple of years. The first intake is to take place from Oct. 22 to Nov. 5.

Public elementary teachers boycott extracurriculars OPSBA have ignored all attempts by ETFO to get them to return to the central bargaining table, including an offer to refer one issue to binding arbitration,” said ETFO president Sam Hammond. “If OPSBA and the government want a deal, why are they not responding to our efforts to resume bargaining? Why are they not back at the bargaining table with us? “Our members do not undertake this escalation of strike action lightly, but they understand that reaching a fair and reasonable agreement will not happen unless OPSBA and the

government are present at the bargaining table,” he added. “We are calling on OPSBA and the government to return to the central bargaining table with ETFO to work to conclude this round of negotiations. ETFO members have been working without a contract since August 2014. That is not good for our teachers or for our students.” HIGH SCHOOL DEAL

Meanwhile, the news is much brighter on the secondary school front. The Renfrew County public

school board announced last week it had reached a tentative collective agreement with its secondary school teachers. The secondary teachers have already agreed on a contract with the province. The school board and District 28 of the OSSTF have a tentative agreement on the local terms of a new collective agreement, the board said in a news release, adding that no further details will be made available until after the tentative deal has been voted on and ratified by both parties, on or before Nov. 3. “The RCDSB trustees are delight-

ed we have a tentative local collective agreement with our secondary teachers’ federation,” said RCDSB Chair Dave Shields. “We value the exemplary support provided by our secondary teachers.”

Elementary teachers, angry their effort to have central bargaining with the province resume, announced last week they will withdraw from all voluntary extracurricular activities starting Wednesday, Oct. 28 A news release from the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) reported that the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) and the government have failed to respond to efforts to resume contract talks. As a result, ETFO will be escalating its Phase 3 strike action, it said. “The Liberal government and

Packers skate to a win before break Scott Campbell

scottcampbell@metroland.com

Arnprior Packers losing streak stopped at three games. The Oct. 20 match against the Ottawa Canadians was a loss of 4-2. Ottawa dominated the game from the start with three goals in the first period. Arnprior only managed one by Dallas Farr. Mitchell Sennett netted the lone goal for the Packers in the second period. Ottawa answered with two more to add to their tally. Neither team could score as the game wound down in

the third. Oct. 23 was a trip down the highway to Renfrew. It was another loss of 4-3 for the Packers. “It was a good game to watch,” said coach Bill Griese. “Once again we had a hard time getting pucks to the net and finishing. Not sure why, but some of our goal scorers are just not scoring.” Arnprior ruled the first period with goals from Patrick McGrath and Chris King. Mitchell Sennett, Corey Chaplin, Dean Galasso and Jonathan Ready picked up the helpers. The Timberwolves bounced back in the

second to tie the game. Corey Chaplin scored in the third for the Packers to keep the score tight. Renfrew still managed to pull ahead for the win. “They are a good team, one of the best in the league,” said Griese. “It’s always hard to win in Renfrew. Overall, very happy with the way we played.” On Sunday, was a match-up with the Alexandria Glens. “It was our best game of the season,” said Griese. While the Glens took the first period with just the one goal, the Packers were able to battle back. Brayden Harvey, Corey Chaplin scored and Chris King took a deuce in the game. “All four lines were rolling and playing

well,” said Griese. “We had plenty of energy and the pace of the game was where we wanted it. Peter Brooks was outstanding once again in nets. Between him and Matt Dods we really don’t worry too much about the other team’s surges.” Currently, Alexandria is one of the top teams in the league. “We pretty much pushed the game all night. Sometimes we chase pucks and players and then get into trouble but we didn’t let up.” The Packers get an unusual break this weekend because of the new CCHL2 league scheduling. Arnprior won’t return to the ice till the Prescott Flyers come to town on Friday, Nov. 6. Puck drop is slated for 7:30 p.m.

Valley team Aces Toronto tourney The Upper Ottawa Valley Aces, with several Arnprior area players, won a major minor hockey peewee tournament in Toronto Oct. 16-18. At the Humberview Invitational ‘AA’ Peewee Tournament, Aces won all four games heading into finals, then beat the Toronto Eagles 6-2 to win the tournament. The Arnprior players are Jack Thomson, Jace Letourneau, Ryland Landon, AJ Anas and Porter Robertson. From Renfrew are Carter Jarrett, Connor Buffam, Reid Greer and Ryan Hawthorne. The rest of team, representing Deep River, Pembroke, Petawawa and area, includes Caleb Dubeau, Kosta Kastanias, Jack Hillier, Willen Smith, Blake Menard and Jacob Wilkins. Feb. 15, 1987 – Nov. 2, 1998 Letter From Heaven When tomorrow starts without me, And I’m not here to see, If the sun should rise and find your eyes, Filled with tears for me. I wish so much you wouldn’t cry, The way you did today, While thinking of the many things We didn’t get to say. I know how much you love me, As much as I love you, And each time you think of me, I know you’ll miss me too. When tomorrow starts without me, Don’t think we’re far apart, For every time you think of me, I’m right there in your heart.

this Hallowe’en

The first half of the game was very tight with the two teams trading goals a couple times but the latter half of the game was all Arnprior and the tenacious Packers came out with a 7 to 2 victory to secure the championship. The coaches returned home very proud of the teams play and credit the tremendous weekend to solid team work and gritty

determination, “We got down early in a couple games and just kept pushing the pace and never let up, every player worked hard every shift. “More impressive than the scores were how we earned them, the game sheets have points from every single player and add to that some stellar goal tending with 2 shutouts and you end up with the results we achieved”

CLOSE GAME

R0013419397

Facing some of the top rep A teams from Northern Ontario, Arnprior’s Peewee Packers returned from North Bay this past weekend as tournament champs. Pushing back from an early three goal deficit the Packers scored six unanswered goals against the host West Ferris team to kick off the tournament with a 6-3 win. Building off the teams strong comeback drive in the first game they continued through the round robin with decisive victories over East Nipissing and Orillia, 9-0 and 4-1 respectively. The Packers finished first place in the round robin and faced Orillia in a rematch for the semi-final game. From the opening face-off Orillia came out strong but the Packers weathered the early storm and did what they had done all weekend and kept the intensity and pace high. Some big saves and great all round defensive play earned them a spot in the final with a 3-0 win. The championship game saw the Packers up against their league rivals Petawawa who had also done well in the round robin, finishing 2nd overall.

Banking on kids The staff at TD Canada Trust in the Arnprior Mall presents the town’s recreation director Glenn Arthur with a $1,000 cheque made out to Renfrew County KidSport. Arthur represents the non-profit organization that provides support to under-resourced children and youth facing barriers from organized sport. TD branch manager Regine Verdon, third from left, said TD picks various organizations to support, but that this is the first year for helping Renfrew’s Kidsport. She added that contributing locally is an important aspect of the company’s mission.

Civitan back supporting Arnprior community After more than a decade of being away from the community, the Arnprior and District Civitan Club is back. Chartered on Dec. 13, 2014, the club has spent the past 10 months working at getting its roots re-established in our great community. Over the summer, the club was involved with the Community Challenge Dragon Boat and White Pines festivals. During these two festivals, Arnprior club members worked alongside fellow Civitans from Almonte, Pakenham and Perth to fry up close to 600 pounds of fresh cut fries. “We had a great time getting back into the spirit of helping in our community,” said president Bill Lawrence. He reports the club is planning to participate with a

wreath-laying at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Day and is hoping to get involved with the Legion with their Angel Tree project and Santa Claus Parade. Members helped the club’s past president Glenn Miller with his personal fundraising efforts and have plans to get involved with the Civitan Canadian District East with fundraising efforts for CHEO. This year, Civitan

clubs from District East donated $53,000 to CHEO during its Miracle Match portion of the Telethon in June, the largest individual donation during that campaign. One of the Arnprior members has brought forward the idea of a dog park, so the club is currently moving forward with that initiative. If you have ideas of how the Civitan Club can help support the community, and would like to get involved, whether it’s an hour or two a week or an hour or two a month, drop by and join members at their regularly scheduled meeting nights. “We’d be glad to see you,” says Lawrence, noting Arnprior Civitan meets the first and third Monday of each month at 7 p,m, at the Old Fire Hall on Elgin Street.

Naturalists to present Lord of the Flies at Nov. 3 meeting Dr. Jeff Skevington thinks flies are an amazing group of animals. And after you take in his show and tell at November’s Macnamara Field Naturalists Club meeting Nov. 3, there’s a very good chance you’ll think so, too. This man knows his Diptera - the scientific name for flies. Skevington is a research scientist at the Canadian National Collection of Insects, Arachnids and Nematodes (with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada) and an adjunct professor at Carleton and Guelph Universities. His research specializes on the taxonomy and phylogenetics of flies, in particular flower/hover flies (Syrphidae), big-headed flies (Pipunculidae) and thick-headed flies (Conopidae). He has published more than 100 research articles, book chapters and books. Some buzz-worthy bites of information about flies: Flies comprise over 10 per cent of all described animal life on the planet. With 160,000 described species and over 10 times that number undescribed, flies occupy every imaginable ecological niche. Flies provide enormous economic advantages - pollinator flies are second only to bees in their role in agriculture and some foods like

Fall memories made with a few pennies and marshmallows

H

ad I not gone to Briscoe’s General Store that day with Mother ... a Saturday it was ... we would not have had that wonderful Fall evening out on the farm in Northcote. It all started when Mother was just about finished with gathering up the few things she needed and asking Mr. Briscoe to just put them on her bill. I had three of those very large brown pennies in my pocket, and I was looking over the choices in the candy counter. But when I heard Mother ask Mr. Briscoe to add her purchases to her bill, I was overcome with a feeling of deep sadness. And so I reached into my pocket and took out the coins and handed them to Mr. Briscoe and asked him to please take them off Mother’s bill. He looked at the coins in his hand, and looked at

MARY COOK Memories

Mother, who I thought was about to break into tears. “I’ll tell you what I’ll do,” he said. “I’ll take three cents off your mother’s bill, and in exchange I’ll give you this bag of marshmallows.” We had never had marshmallows on the farm. After all, they would be considered shear luxury! I looked at Mother for approval, and she nodded. I ran to the buggy as fast as my legs could carry me, and had to talk myself out of diving into the brown paper bag to eat a few on my way back to the farm. It was a beautiful Fall day, and when we pulled into the yard, and Everett came to unhitch Queenie off the buggy, Mother and I had

to wade through the mounds of leaves fallen off the big maple tree to get to the back door.  It was then Mother said she had this wonderful idea, and it would be something the whole family could enjoy, and she grabbed the bag of marshmallows out of my hand and plunked it on top of the ice box. “We’ll all rake leaves today, and tonight, we’ll have a bonfire and we’ll roast the marshmallows.” Well, sharing my treat with everyone else certainly wasn’t in my plans, but the thought of a bonfire thrilled me no end! And so for the entire afternoon, using every rake we could find, including two Father used to rake out the manure in the barns, we five children and Mother, and even Father, mounded the fallen leaves into a crimson mountain, well away from

the house. Father made sure it was close to the watering trough too ... “Just in case,” he said. Evening chores, supper, and redding up the kitchen were all done in jig time, and blocks of wood taken out of the summer kitchen were put around the heaped leaves. The sky was black. Night had closed in around us, and the nip of Fall was in the air. Father had found long pieces of twigs, and with his jackknife, put points on each end. It was like Christmas Eve to me, sitting on a block of wood, with a quilt wrapped around my legs, and Mother said since I was given the marshmallows, I should be the one to hold the bag. Father circled the pile, and every few feet he lit a match and touched the leaves with its flame. Soon, the fire had caught, and the mound

became a mass of burning leaves. My sister Audrey, Mother and I had skewered a marshmallow onto our sticks, but my three brothers chose to use the three-pronged forks they used to catch mudpout in the Bonnecherre. I could see everyone’s face in the light of the fire, and I was overcome with such a feeling of happiness that I thought I just might explode. The marshmallows turned black on the outside, and the insides were just as I expected them to be: scorching hot and sweet like honey. Long after the brown paper bag was empty, we sat around the fire. The boys stretched out on the grass with their feet towards the burning leaves. Father with his back against the water trough, had lit his pipe, and I could see the red from its bowl, and a wisp of smoke from the tobacco he had tamped into it.

We sat long after the fire had died down to just smoldering ashes. But no one moved to go into the house. The brothers talked about things boys talked about back then, and Audrey and Mother sang familiar songs. I rested my head on my sister’s shoulder, and she put an arm around me, as she so often did. I looked up at the dark sky, and saw the warm glow of the coal oil lamp in the window in the kitchen, and the warmest feeling came over me. And I marveled at what simple  joy and contentment you could get out of only three big pennies. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Storyteller to bring Odyssey to library The event, presented by Mill Street Books, Mississippi Public Library and 2 women productions, will be held at 7 p.m. at the Almonte Branch

SUBMITTED

Storyteller Jan Andrews will bring the Odyssey to the Almonte library Oct. 29.

of the Mississippi Public Library. Admission is free, although donations to enable the library to make purchases for its collection will be most gratefully received. “The hero of that tale I pray the goddess help me tell is that resourceful man who roamed the wide world in his efforts to return home after he had sacked the holy citadel of Troy.” So begins Homer’s Odyssey, a tale which storyteller Andrews has been telling for more than 20 years: telling as it was meant to be told through the power of the human voice, spoken with passion to the company of spellbound listeners gathered to hear. “I’m privileged to carry the torch, bringing this great work of literature into the world anew,” Andrews says. “I’m also hugely grateful to both Mississippi Mills Public Library, Almonte branch and the much-loved Mill Street Books for getting together to make it all happen. “I realize the library isn’t exactly an ancient hall, but I also know I can promise an intensely memorable experience.

River Stone to hold Halloween party The River Stone Christian Fellowship is once again hosting a family party Halloween evening in Arnprior. ‘Light up the Night’ is being held outdoors at the church from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 31. The idea is to give families and their young trick-ortreaters a place to go for fun, games and goodies instead of wandering the streets. River Stone is organizing the an-

nual event with help from Glad Tidings Pentecostal, Arnprior Wesleyan and The Oasis churches. “Bring your kids and enjoy the night with us,” invites the church. There will be games for kids of all ages, treats and draw prizes. People can also warm up in the church’s café where there will be free coffee for parents. The church is located at 59 Madawaska Blvd.

Storyteller Jan Andrews will bring the Odyssey to life when she visits the area for a reading Thursday, Oct. 29.

“After all, The Odyssey is an outstanding story. So ancient and yet leaping forth so vibrantly for all of us, capturing that search for home which stands at the heart of all our lives.” Andrews is one of Canada’s most renowned storytellers, famed for her ability to weave magic with her words. She has performed on stages both across the country and internationally.

Doctorless families invited to meeting Nov. 3 The Arnprior and Area Physician Recruitment Committee’s goal is to ensure that every resident has the ability to see a local family doctor. A family doctor is the person you would see if you need a

check-up, want advice about a health problem, are sick or hurt. Are you without a family doctor? Tired of using the ER or travelling for health care? Are you looking to make a

switch to a doctor closer to home in Arnprior? Those without a family doctor may register with Health Care Connect at 1-800-4451822 or at http://www.health. gov.on.ca/en/ms/healthcare-

Free flu shot: ‘protect yourself and others’ The Renfrew County and District Health is urging the public that it’s flu season and get a flu shot. As well as being available from pharmacists (five years and older) and doctors, the free flu shot will be given out by the health unit in a dozen clinics in Renfrew County, including one in Arnprior. The Arnprior flu shot clinic will be held Tuesday, Nov. 10 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Arnprior Legion. Everyone age six months or older can benefit from getting the flu shot on an annual basis, as the viruses that cause the flu change frequently, advises the health unit. Influenza affects people of all ages. However, there are groups of people at higher risk of flu related complications. These are: * children 6 months of age to less than 5 years of age; people 65 years of age and older; people with chronic medical conditions.

“It is important if you live with or provide care to someone who is listed in the group above, that you get your flu shot too,” says the health unit in a news release. “The flu vaccine is safe, and it’s the best way to keep you and the people around you healthy during the flu season. The flu shot cannot give you the flu, the virus is not live.” Influenza vaccine is free for anyone who lives, works or attends school in Ontario. No appointment necessary at the flu clinics. The first one is Nov. 2 in Pembroke and the Renfrew clinic is Thursday, Nov. 5 from 2 to 6 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Parish Hall. For other flu clinic dates and times, visit www.rcdhu.com or call the Health Information Line at 1-800-267-1097, ext. 666. As well as getting a flu shot, good hygiene practices such as frequent and thorough hand washing, covering all coughs and sneezes, and staying home when sick can help prevent infectious diseases.

Century 21 staff collect snowsuits The first sign of snow and the end this weekend of Daylight Saving time is a reminder that Operation Snowsuit needs donations. The Century 21 Explorer Realty gang in Arnprior reminds everyone that new or gently used winter outer wear can be dropped off at their office at 201 Daniel St. South Monday to

Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Toddler to teen sizes are needed, and “rest assured that the snowsuits do get distributed locally,” staff stress. Century 21 staff will also be collecting along the Arnprior Santa Claus Parade route again this year. “Thanks for your support.”

connect/public/ to be entered on the list for the next family doctor accepting new patients. For those wishing to have assistance in registering with Health Care Connect they are having a community event on at the Arnprior Public Library on Tuesday Nov. 3 from 2-5 p.m. where FHT staff and volunteers will be available to help residents through the process. No registration is

required, and service will be provided on a first come first serve basis. They are also asking those looking to switch family doctors to a local one to fill in our needs assessment survey. This 10 question survey will help to ensure we are able to continue to recruit new family doctors to the area. The Arnprior and Area PRC continue their campaign

to ensure awareness around the need for additional doctors, and to solicit new funds to support their continued recruitment efforts. To support the campaign with a monetary contribution or attendance at our PRC monthly meeting, please contact Laura Tromp, Physician Recruitment Coordinator at 613-623-3166 ext. 590 or ltromp@arnpriorhealth.ca

This week’s puzzle answers in next week’s issue

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
