More than 22 minutes at the Arnprior library
Tiffany Lepack/Metroland
Author and television personality Mary Walsh entertained a sold-out crowd of 170 people at the Arnprior Public Library on Saturday, Nov. 4. Walsh, right, pictured with librarian Karen DeLuca, left, read from her book Crying for the Moon, signed books, answered questions and told stories from her time on CBC’s This Hour has 22 Minutes. The well-attended event was a fundraiser for the adult programming at the library.
On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day, we will remember them. There are numerous opportunities to mark those in Arnprior and across Canada who paid the ultimate sacrifice while defending the nation. Branch 174 members meet at the 49 Daniel St. N. location at 10 a.m. to parade down John Street and up to the cenotaph at Arnprior District Memorial Hospital. The ceremony begins just before 11 a.m. Legionnaire Janet Tobio expects some 28 official wreathes and 15 others to be laid this year. “We are very well represented and supported by businesses in town,” she said. The Silver Cross Mothers will be represented this year by Anne Stewart. (Arnprior no longer has mothers who have lost children to war.) She will be accompanied by her husband, Corbett, who is the 2017 Reviewing Officer. They live in town after many years in White Lake.

ARH earns top marks from Accreditation Canada DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
Arnprior Regional Health (ARH) achieved a near perfect score from a national standards organization. Both Arnprior District Memorial Hospital and The Grove Nursing Home underwent onsite evaluations by Accreditation Canada in mid September. Staff, physicians and volunteers demonstrated compliance with more than 1,500 standards during the survey period. Some were improvements over the 2013 survey. All led to the highest possible ranking: Exemplary Standing. “There’s no question we were thrilled,” said Barbara Darlow, board of directors’ chairwoman. “We celebrate the fact that what they do on a daily basis meets the top standards.” ARH President and CEO Eric Hanna, who conducts Accreditation Canada surveys on other hospitals in the region, provided an example of how the program leads to widespread improvements. He said ARH is focused on patientand family-centred care. In the past, food-handlers followed the processes they did in their own homes. ARH then introduced a food-handling course to train staff. In the end, all involved benefited. “Patients are better off,” Hanna said. “And staff feel better about the program. That, to me, is a really positive thing. We didn’t have to do it. It could have been demoralizing to staff if they didn’t get it. But staff saw the benefit to residents. And that’s a real credit to them.” The areas ARH scored 99 or 100 per cent include: offering timely and equitable services; doing the right things to achieve best results; partnering with patient and family in care; making the best use of resources; working with the com-

It received Exemplary Standing for scoring 100 per cent in many of more than 1,500 areas. munity to anticipate and meet needs; keeping safe; and taking care of staff. Other areas with just as high a mark include: medical services; long-term care services; home support services; emergency department; diagnostic imaging services; medication management standards; infection prevention and control standards; leadership; and governance. The Required Organizational Practice section of the survey deals with client safety and minimizing risk. ARH scored 100 per cent in all areas: • creating a culture of safety within the organization; • improving the effectiveness and coordination of communication among care and service providers and with the recipients of care and services; • ensuring the safe use of high-risk medications; • creating a worklife and physical environment that supports the safe delivery of care and service; • reducing the risk of health care-associated infections and their impact; • identifying safety risks inherent in the client population.
room for improvement. In the report that followed the survey, Accreditation Canada cited a challenge in future recruitment efforts due to “volunteer burnout.” Many new policies and some new staff mean ARH should do an evaluation and status update in future. And as the population continues to grow and age, service delivery and changing client needs could prove a challenge. However, the report was largely glowing. ARH does well at partnering with outside groups; the leadership team and CEO are highly respected throughout the organization and community; and, clients and families report that staff provides kind and compassionate care. “Arnprior Regional Health has gone beyond the requirements of the accreditation program and demonstrates excellence in quality improvement,” it reads. “Responding to community needs, ARH is keeping pace with new clinical innovations, evolving partnerships and collaborative models, engaging community, patients, residents and clients in planning, delivery and evaluation Of course, there is always of programs and services.”

Calabogie bar and grill has liquor licence suspended after crash TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
Days after two Renfrew Timberwolves were killed in a single-vehicle crash on Calabogie Road, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission (AGCO) has suspended the liquor licence of Shooters Bar and Grill for reasons of public interest and safety. Brandon Hanniman, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene of the Oct. 27 crash and 18-year-old Alex Paquette succumbed to his injuries on the weekend. Two other 18-year-old hockey players - Ben Scheuneman and Jake McGrimmon - are recovering from their injuries. On Oct. 30, the Registrar of the AGCO issued a Notice of Proposal (NOP) to revoke the liquor licence of Shooters Bar and Grill, in Calabogie for multiple infractions of the Liquor Licence Act (LLA), including alleged service to minors. An email from Ray Kahnert, senior advisor, communications, says the AGCO “is indeed aware of this tragic incident on Oct. 27. “It is our understanding the Coroner’s Office is investigating. As a matter of practice, the AGCO works closely with local and provincial authorities in response to incidents such as these and shares information. We have been in contact with the local Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment and the AGCO is continuing to collect information for its own regulatory review.
The alleged infractions of the (LLA) are as follows: permit drunkenness; promote immoderate consumption; licensee sell/supply liquor to apparent intoxicated person; permit apparent minor to have or consume liquor on licensed premises; fail to verify identification of apparent minor; permit removal of liquor from licensed premises and fail to maintain control over premises. An OPP release issued Oct. 30 said “police believe alcohol contributed to the crash. The AGCO is the provincial agency responsible for regulating the safe and responsible sale and service of beverage alcohol, under the authority of the Liquor Licence Act. Establishments that hold a licence to sell alcohol are responsible for meeting their obligations under the LLA for all activities that occur within their establishment. An establishment served with a NOP has the right to appeal the Registrar’s proposal to the Licence Appeal Tribunal (LAT), which is an adjudicative tribunal independent of the AGCO and part of Safety, Licensing Appeals and Standards Tribunals Ontario. A funeral service was held for Hanniman on Nov. 1 at the Whitewater Wesleyan Community Church in Cobden. And on Nov. 3 a funeral mass was held at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Renfrew for Paquette. The funeral processions went past the boys’ high schools, greeted by students lining the street.

Meet Nobody
Tiffany Lepack/Metroland
St. Joseph’s Catholic School students in Cathy Valleau and Amanda Epp’s Grade 3/4 classes were formally introduced to Nobody on Friday, Nov. 3. The program is sponsored by Arnprior Rotary Club and president elect Dave Palmer presented the doll to Lorelai Howard and Alexis Forstner. Below all of the students embrace the doll and the suitcase Nobody arrived in. Palmer told the children that everybody was a somebody and he challenged the students to work together to make Nobody a somebody. The students accepted the challenge and will work together during the school year to complete good will projects in the community and turning Nobody into a somebody. Sabrina Hunter’s Grade 7 class is also working on the Nobody project.
The Alzheimer Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County has a new name! After 35 years of supporting local families living with dementia, the local non-profit organization has changed its name to “The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County” to more properly reflect the constituency it helps and the scope of its expertise. When the organization first came into being, Alzheimer’s disease was the best known and most prevalent form of dementia. This has changed and Alzheimer’s disease is now thought to represent less than 30% of all dementias.* “Our organization has always worked with people challenged by Lewy Body, Frontotemporal, Vascular, Parkinsonian and other dementias but this has not been reflected in our name,” says Paddy Bowen, Chief Executive Director of the newly named The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County. “We are also cognizant of the growing tide of interest in dementia as reflected by the recently announced Ontario Dementia Strategy and the National Dementia Strategy.” The Dementia Society is here to help. We offer: • One to one support • Social programs • Peer support • Information and resources • Education Because no one should face dementia alone. To learn more about dementia as well as the programs and services offered by The Dementia Society, please visit www.dementiahelp.ca or contact us at info@dsorc.org or 613-523-4004 in Ottawa or 1-888-411-2067 in Renfrew County. *The majority of dementia cases are now thought to be “mixed” vs. Alzheimer’s disease only: i.e. 60% of dementia cases are attributed to Alzheimer’s disease. 30 – 50% of those also have other forms of dementia present. Author publishes eighth book: ‘Julia’s Gifts’ “No man has tasted the full flavour of life until he has known poverty, love and war.” O. Henry’s quote could well be the theme of local author, Ellen Gable Hrkach’s, eighth book, Julia’s Gifts, a First World War romance. One hundred years ago, the world was at war. It was supposed to be the “war to end all wars.” However, amid the carnage of the First World War, soldiers, nurses and other volunteers discovered love. Hrkach, who writes under her maiden name (Gable), says that creating characters and stories can be “rewarding, but it’s also challenging work, especially if it entails historical research.” Julia’s Gifts is the first of three books planned for a series entitled Great War Great Love. The setting for this novel is 191718, France. The protagonist is Julia Murphy who, as a young girl in Philadelphia, began buying Christmas gifts for her future spouse, a man whose name she doesn’t yet know, a man she calls her beloved. Soon after the United States enters the Great War, Julia impulsively volunteers as a medical-aid worker, with no experience or training. During the course of the novel, the
James Hrkach/submitted
Local author Ellen Gable Hrkach has just released her eighth book, Julia’s Gifts, a World War 1 romance. reader follows Julia from Philadelphia to war-torn France as she transitions from unworldly young woman to compassionate volunteer. Hrkach has always been fascinated with history. “This particular war piqued my interest, especially since it’s been one hundred
years since it took place.” In the story, Julia is American and her love interest, Peter, is Canadian. “I am American and my husband is Canadian. I thought it might be fun exploring that relationship with fictional characters.” The novel also includes beautiful sonnets written by Peter (but actually written by the author’s husband, James Hrkach). The second in the Great War Great Love series, Charlotte’s Honor, will be released in late 2018, and the third, Ella’s Promise, will be released in 2019. Originally from the Philadelphia area, Hrkach is now a dual citizen, having received her Canadian citizenship in 2014. The author began writing Christian fiction as a hobby in 2002 when her five sons were small boys. The part-time hobby eventually turned into a full-time career of writing, editing, book coaching and publishing. Reviews for Julia’s Gifts have been overwhelmingly positive. In her review, award-winning author Therese Heckenkamp, says that this novel is a, “touching story of faith and devotion that is sure to leave a lasting impression.” Jean Heimann, author of Fatima: The Apparition that
Changed the World, gave Julia’s Gifts high praise: “Stunning love story amid World War 1 … outstanding and unforgettable book!” Since 2009, the author’s books have been collectively downloaded over 600,000 times on Kindle. The author will be signing and selling books at the following events during the month of November: Friday, Nov. 10: The Knights of Columbus Ladies’ Shopping Night, St. John Chrysostom Parish Hall, Arnprior, Ontario, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18: CWL Bake Sale and Bazaar, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish Hall, Braeside, Ont. from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25: One of a Kind Christmas Craft, Bake and Business Sale, Nick Smith Centre, Arnprior, Ont. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Julia’s Gifts costs $15 for the print edition and $4.99 for the Kindle edition. OPINION
Connected to your community
Building safer communities Building safer communities is a job that requires community and police co-operation. The week of Nov. 5-11 has been designated as Crime Prevention Week in Ontario. Once again the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will place emphasis on crime prevention and community safety and well-being. “Crime Prevention Week 2017 promotes working together to improve community safety and well-being for all. The OPP continues to encourage everyone to create and strengthen partnerships to work toward safer and healthier communities,” says OPP Insp. Robyn MacEachern, Community Safety Services. This year’s theme for Crime Prevention Week is ‘Building safer communities together.’ The theme encourages community safety and well-being as a shared responsibility, including the engagement of multisector partners at a local level. In support of Crime Prevention Week the OPP and TD will together be launching a new partnership that will enable OPP officers to continue the OPP Community Bear Program. The Community Bear Program enables officers to provide reassurance and comfort to the community’s youngest victims,
which begins the process of rebuilding their sense of safety and security. The program focuses on how proactive measures support crime prevention. The interaction between officers and children, as well as partnerships with community agencies, address the importance of early intervention. The OPP is also reminding the public of some of the community safety programs that assist to keep communities safe including: Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED), SafeGuard Ontario, the OPP KIDS Program, and Lock It or Lose It, just to name a few. Again this year the OPP is continuing its partnership with Mac’s Convenience/ Circle K Stores across Ontario for Operation Heat 2017. Officers will be handing out positive tickets to youth spotted committing random acts of kindness or exhibiting “positive” behavior. These positive tickets are actually coupons valid for a free beverage at all participating Mac’s Convenience/Circle K stores across Ontario. OPP officers will be on the lookout in communities across the province; and when they “catch” a youth participating in an act of kindness the youth will receive a ‘thank you’ which they will receive in the form of a free “ticket” for hot chocolate.

Falling out of fashion is a good thing for animals MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’s Way
With all of the rain we have experienced this fall, many fields have become shallow lakes. While not good for farmers harvesting late crops or planting new ones, the abundance of water has benefited certain birds. Flocks of migrating dunlin, small, grey sandpipers with down-curved bills, recently briefly visited local fields on their way south, harvesting worms and other invertebrates forced to the surface in the water-saturated ground. Currently, hordes of Canada geese continue to visit the same fields, plucking plant tubers and remnants of corn from the muddy soil. Also visiting the flooded fields are flocks of ring-billed gulls. When I first started looking at birds nearly 60 years ago, these birds were rare here. Then, over the years they began making regular appearances, and eventually were present in large numbers, many nesting locally on islands and sandy shores. Ring-billed gulls, which take three years to attain their full adult plumage, are named after an obvious black ring around the middle of the adults’ beaks. They are the smallest members of their group to nest locally. Herring gulls, larger gulls with heavier,
Michael Runtz

Both species visit fields to pluck invertebrates from the mud and water, with ring-billeds greatly outnumbering herrings. When I was young, ring-billed gulls were uncommon in our region because they were still in the process of expanding their range eastward from the prairies. A century earlier they had been present in the east but loss of nesting habitat and human persecution devastated their numbers. Their
eggs became a popular food item and encroachment on their nesting habitat was another factor in their demise. The fashion industry also played a role when women’s hats sporting white feathers became the rage. The millinery trade affected other birds. Farther south, egret populations were becoming decimated because of the hat industry. The long, white feathers by these beautiful birds were particularly prized. Egrets became so rare that many people were worried that they might become ex-
tinct. Then, eminent conservationists including the National Audubon Society lobbied to stop the slaughter of egrets and other birds for the fashion industry, By 1910 protection of birds in many states was instigated. Today, the logo of the National Audubon Society still bears the image of a great egret, a visual reminder of the reason for the formation of this famous group. In Canada, a similar conservation group was never formed but the 1917 Migratory Birds Convention Act offered gulls and other migratory birds legal protection. Soon gull populations began to rebound. In the Great Lakes, the proliferation of rainbow smelt and alewife, small, non-native fish, provided new food resources and soon ring-billed gulls recolonized those huge water bodies. There is also speculation that the increase in number and size of dumps was a factor in the gull recovery. Birds were not the only animals affected by the fashion industry; our national animal faced near extinction when beaver hats became the rage in Europe. Hats off to those early conservationists who fought to end the use of bird feathers and beaver fur in the fashion industry. The Nature email is mruntz@start. ca

Improving community
A community improvement grant from the municipality will go toward a new awning at The 2 Grands Piano Bar on Elgin Street West. The just under $900 in taxpayers’ money going toward the $3,500 project will almost exhaust the 2017 grants budget. The awning will extend 32 inches into the sidewalk. The owner will be responsible for upkeep. The town is pleased to see downtown businesses taking advantage of the grants budget to improve facades and attract tourism.

Unity Run: 13th Annual Walk, Wheel or Run another success JENNIFER CREEDEN Community Living Renfrew County South
It was a perfect day for a walk, wheel or run on Sunday, Oct. 22. This year’s Unity Run saw 253 participants, looking amazing in their beautiful red t-shirts and maple leaf finisher’s medals honouring Canada’s 150th, come out to support Community Living Renfrew County South. It was wonderful to see all the individuals, families, friends, community members, students and sponsors there to help raise funds for accessible transportation. Pillar 5 won our Team Challenge for their spirit, energy and fundraising efforts so they will look after the Team trophy for the year! Submitted Our top fundraiser was Steve Bourgoin who Deputy Chief Rick Desarmia of Arnprior encouraging collected over $450 – way to go Steve! We runners during the Arnprior Unity Run. had a repeat performance with our “Run

We were excited to have a new award this year, “Happy Feet”, for the elementary school with the most participants with the winner being Walter Zadow. Congratulations to Walter Zadow on being the premiere winners of this award. Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who helped to make this day so successful by assisting with the running clinic, helping with registration, covering all the streets and corners, setting up the hall and arranging all the food and of course cheering on our participants while handing out the medals and prizes! Many thanks to the local businesses who
Professional Employment Services for Job Seekers and Employers
donated prizes to be given out at the Unity Run – everyone loved those. Special thanks go to the OPP for leading the way at the start and the McNab/Braeside and Arnprior firefighters being out there at the corners of the route to ensure everyone’s safety. Thank you to our incredible sponsors whose generosity and support makes this event so successful and helps us to raise the much-needed funds. The RBC Foundation joined us this year with several participants taking part in the event and a terrific presentation of a $2,000 donation. We could not have done this without the diligence and drive of our race directors Jane Dowd and Tony Veale – we thank them from the bottom of our hearts for all their hard work and dedication to The Unity Run!

ADHS junior and senior football champs
Victory was twice as sweet for the Arnprior District High School football Rapids teams on Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Beckwith football field in Carleton Place. Both teams won the Lanark-Renfrew Football League championship against the Almonte Thunderbolts. In the junior game the Rapids won 14-0, Almonte had not been held off the scoreboard all season. Bailey Andrews and Seth Malina scored the touchdowns and the defence was amazing. In a much closer senior game Arnprior won 18-15, Montana Reinhardt and John Young scored the touchdowns. Ryan Massoud kicked one field goal and the other points came from a safety taken by Almonte. The senior team will host the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletics Association semifinal on Nov. 16 at Oattes Field in Arnprior at 1 p.m. against LaCitadelle from Cornwall. The details for the next junior game have yet to be finalized. This is the first time since 2011 that both the junior and senior teams from Arnprior have won the league championship and its been since 1987 since both teams beat Submitted photos Almonte in the finals.

Bluefish kick off season with scary good times at Perth Spooky Meet ARNPRIOR BLUEFISH SWIM CLUB
A contingent of 15 swimmers from the Arnprior Bluefish Swim Club team spent a rainy Sunday in the Perth Pool. The fun meet kicks off what is sure to be a fun packed season of competitive swimming. The Perth Spooky meet is a short course competition meant to be fun start to the season in eastern Ontario. For many younger swimmers it is their first competition and for other more experienced swimmers it is an opportunity to return to the competitive circuit after a summer of break and a month of fall training. The meet culminated with the anticipated annual pumpkin re-
lay. Teams of eight from each club swam in a relay, where each team carried, pushed and floated their own pumpkins for the 200m “any style” relay. Bluefish swimmers are now continuing their training for the upcoming Cornwall Snowflake Tournament in late November. Training for events like this take commitment on behalf of the swimmers. It also takes pool time and community support to build a swim team. Bluefish athletes hosted a successful bottle drive this past weekend. Dr. William Burwell, Dr. Bill, as he was affectionately known by his patients, passed away quietly at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital on November 1, in his 89th year. He will be greatly missed by his muchloved wife Bonnie who he married in 2009, and with whom he shared a great passion for the outdoors. Bill was cherished by his 4 children Douglas (Gayle Crooks), Katherine Lyn, Robert (deceased in 2012), Cindy (Rich Verboon) and his grandchildren Laura, Kristine, Emma, William, Matthew & Adam and his 2 great-grand children Jacey and Hayden. He was a wonderful friend and father figure to his 5 step-children Sarah Wright, Jobie Eldridge, Joshua Eldridge, Emily Eldridge and Bronwyn Eldridge (Ryan) Bradley and their respective children Jessie Wright, Morgen Wright, Charlie Eldridge, Jax Bradley and Harper Bradley. Bill was born in Renfrew, March 14, 1929, and attended Renfrew Collegiate Institute before continuing his studies in medicine at McGill University, where met his first wife Ruth (who passed away in 1994). After graduating in 1952, he spent a few years interning in England and Hamilton, Ontario, before returning to Renfrew to start his family and begin his medical practice, following in the footsteps of his father, Dr. George Burwell. A caring, benevolent, and much-loved doctor, he served as chief of staff at RVH and cared for patients there for over 50 years. He continued to practice medicine from his home for a few special patients until 2014. Bill was also part of the medical staff for 38 years at Bonnechere Manor, and in 2009 he was awarded honorary chairman of the Bonnechere Manor’s Auditorium Fundraising campaign. An active member of the local community he served for several years on the Industrial Commission. Since a child, Bill had a passion for all things steam powered, and for years he organised an annual Steam Show at his “farm” on Fraser Road near Burnstown, to the delight and benefit of the local community. With his steamboat the Puffin, he participated in, and sometimes organised, an annual Steamboat flotilla. Over the past 5 years he continued this passion, along with a great group of friends, to build a replica Alligator Steam Tug Boat, which he was thankfully able to see launched for its inaugural trip up the Ottawa River in September. Bill was predeceased by his parents George and Devee, his first wife Ruth, his brother Robert (Bob) and his son Robert as well as several great childhood friends. Bill was a wonderful and compassionate doctor, a great friend to many and he had a gift for reciting poetry and telling jokes. His loss will be felt not only by Bonnie and his family, but to the many people he cared for. He will be particularly missed by his long-time dear friends, Terry Fisher, Bill Chown, and Barb Carrier. The family would like to thank Dr. Max Buxton and Dr. Nemani, as well as the Renfrew Victoria Hospital nurses and staff, who showed him great care and respect in his final week. Visitation at McPhail & Perkins Funeral Home on 85 Munroe Avenue E, Renfrew Ontario, on Tuesday, November 7, from 2pm – 4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral service will be held at Trinity-St. Andrews United Church on Wednesday, November 8, at 11 am followed by a private family Interment at Thomsonville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Bonnechere Manor or Renfrew Victoria Hospital. Condolences and donations may be made at mcphailandperkins.ca

IN MEMORIAM
In loving memory of KEVIN McMILLIAN Oct 1958 - Nov 2015 Our lives go on without you, But nothing is the same, We have to hide our heartache, When someone speaks your name, Sad are the hearts that love you, Silent are the tears that fall, Living without you is the hardest part of all, You did so many things for us, Your heart was so kind and true, and when we needed someone, We could always count on you, To special years will not return, When we were all together, But with the love in our hearts, You walk with us forever. Love Mom and Dad _____________________ In loving memory of KEVIN McMILLAN October 1958 November 2015 “The Big Guy”
Miss ya Buddy, Jake _____________________ In loving memory of Kevin McMillan “The Big Guy” Oct. 1958 - Nov. 2015 They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason, Will change the way I feel, For no one knows the heartache, That lies behind our smiles, No one knows how many times, We have broken down and cried, We want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of, But so hard to be without. Loved and Always Missed, Keith and Marg
who passed away November 9, 2015 Although we smile and make no fuss, No one misses him more than us, And when old times we often recall, It’s then we miss him most of all. May the winds of love blow softly and whisper so you’ll hear, We love you, miss you, And wish you were here.... Those we love don’t go away, They walk with us every day Love you forever, June and Family

In loving memory of a precious wife, mother, mother in law and granny who passed away 27 years ago on Remembrance Day. We are sending you a dove to Heaven with a parcel on its wings, Be careful when you open it, It’s full of beautiful things, Inside are a million kisses, wrapped in a million hugs, To say how much we miss you, And to send you all our love, God called your name so gently, That only you could hear. No one heard the footsteps, of the Angel drawing near... Softly from the shadows, There came a gentle call, You closed your eyes and went to sleep, You quietly left us all. We hold you close without our hearts, And there you will remain, To walk with us throughout our lives, Until we meet again. Loved and missed every day, Channel and families

‘Waste not, want not’ was the way in Mary’s household
MARY COOK
Wheat box, and so I became the sole owner. As soon as the box came in the house, Mother would let me rip it open and remove the cards ... carefully of course, so that the biscuits wouldn’t be broken. I would get my crayons and spend time colouring each card, and once done, they would be added to a growing collection, which I treasured, and kept securely hidden in my washstand drawer. That was because my brother Emerson threatened to fork them into the Findlay Oval when I wasn’t looking. He thought once the cards were coloured, they should be done away with. But I saved each one, and soon had a stack inches thick, held together with string. I could spend many an hour just sitting quietly with my pack of cards, looking and re-looking at them. Sometimes I would go upstairs when I had nothing else to do, and take the pile of cards out of my washstand and lay them out on the bed. I had so many that they would cover the entire quilt. The cards came with a little hole in one corner, and if you wanted to, you could put in a piece of string through the hole. But I could never figure out what on earth, if anything, this added to the cards. The little loaves of Shredded Wheat weren’t individually wrapped, of course. They just sat one on top of the other in-
Mary’s Memories
There was no way of getting out of eating a heaping bowl full of porridge for breakfast. Mother made enough to feed half of Renfrew county. And even though it was my least favourite morning food, it was put before me, and I was expected to eat the bowl clean. If not, I would get the usual story of the starving Armenians, which meant I was supposed to be grateful that I at least had something to put in my mouth. Occasionally, and only occasionally, Mother would come home from Briscoe’s General Store with a box of Shredded Wheat. Although I was no more fond of it than I was of porridge, it was the box and the treasures inside that thrilled me to the bone! The cereal came in an oblong box, and inside were about three layers of shredded wheat “biscuits,” divided by cardboard sheets. It was those sheets which caused me to rejoice when Mother found a few extra pennies to add this special cereal to our order. Each sheet had a different picture, usually a country scene, and sometimes an animal looking out around a tree. My sister Audrey and my three brothers thought they were much too old to be bothered with the cards from the Shredded FOR SALE

side the box. As well as loving the cards, I also loved it when the box was empty, and I could lay claim to it as well. It made a perfect bed for the smallest of my dolls, and I once tried to cram my new kitten into one, but she was having none of that. And when it came to eating the Shredded Wheat, like the porridge, it certainly didn’t appeal to me. Mother would pour boiling water on one of the little loaves, drain the bowl, and then add the cream and brown sugar. The rest of the family thought it was a real treat. Of course, Father would still have to have his fried potatoes and salt pork. It didn’t take long for the Shredded Wheat boxes to become battered and so I would have to tear it down into flat pieces. It was then added to the wood box, along the side where Father kept old copies of the Renfrew Mercury and the Family Herald and Weekly Star. It too would go to help start the Findlay Oval in the morning. Like everything else that came into the house, be it from the general store, or from Renfrew, or from the garden, or the smoke house, nothing was wasted. It gave me great satisfaction to know that one of Father’s favourite sayings “waste not ... want not,” could be even applied to the Shredded Wheat boxes that on rare occasions came into our house.

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

REMEMBRANCE DAY
“In Flanders Fields” In Flanders Fields the poppies blow Between the crosses row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
November 11
The Poppy Is a Symbol of Wartime Remembrance The poppy has stood as the official symbol of Canada’s Remembrance Day since 1921, a visual reminder of all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for war. Some may wonder why this small flower is used to represent the fallen soldier. Poppies and fallen soldiers have a long history together. The origins of the flower can be traced back to the Napoleonic wars in France. During these times of unrest and battle, many soldiers went on to final resting places in graves in Flanders, France. Ensuing literature describing how poppies grew so thickly
and vibrantly over these graves — in soil that once could not produce much vegetation. Years later, a soldier would be instrumental in bringing the symbol of the poppy to the hearts and minds of Canadians. When John McCrae served in World War I as a Lieutenant-Colonel, he was stationed near Ypres, Belgium, the area traditionally called Flanders. McCrae observed how poppies grew so well among the makeshift graves of the soliders, which were marked by wooden crosses. When McCrae lost a fellow soldier and close friend, he penned a poem called “In Flanders Fields” and portrayed the picture of war and the poppy flower visual.
We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
