The sun fell behind smoldering clouds just as Remembrance Day ceremonies REGION REGION began in Arnprior. Wrinkled leaves scurried in red and orange across John Street North, pursued by piercing winds. Mourning church bells reverberated past homes and schools while the first snowflakes of the season .COM entered like tiny white crosses. The crowd gathered close; the young were respectful and serious; the elderly slightly less so at times, sharing a warm smile - even a few chuckles at the weather: it is never nice on Remembrance Day, it seems. It is always especially moving to see veterans accompanied by children, grandchildren or even great-grandchildren. They will lay a wreath together then stand for a moment of silence; one recalls a youth the others are proud to honour. It has been so for generations. The ceremony itself this year was again well rehearsed. They marched from legion branch 174, as in years past. The crowd was fairly large, as in years past. The service groups were well represented, as were military organizations and emergency services. .COM

A six-month sentence is not enough punishment for the taxi driver who fatally ran over Chris Walsh, said the victim’s mother. Stuart Carswell, 63, a former A1 taxi driver in Arnprior, pleaded guilty to failing to remain at the scene of a collision causing death. On top of the jail time, he received 12 months probation and a one-year driving prohibition at the sentencing in Pembroke on Nov. 8. He will also pay a $200 victim surcharge. That’s not good enough for Diane Swaine, whose 29-year-old son was left to die on Russett Drive in the early morning hours of Saturday, April 2. She understands there is nothing the court could do to bring back her son. But Carswell made poor decisions and should be held more responsible. “We wouldn’t have been there if he made better decisions. He knows what he did. He looked at the body and
didn’t know if he was dead or alive,” Swaine said. “I can’t change that and nobody else can. We just have to go on. It’s not going to change what happened to us.” Carswell had two passengers in his 2003 Dodge Caravan at about 2:40 a.m. when he hit what he believed was a large object in McNab/Braeside township. A passenger thought it was a deer but pleaded with Carswell to return and make sure. After dropping them off, Carswell did just that. He found a body lying in the roadway, but didn’t check on Walsh or use his cellphone to call 9-1-1. Carswell returned to Arnprior, stopping at a car wash to clean and inspect a damaged headlight, and took two more fares before handing in the keys at the taxi stand. He went home to bed after that, not moving until police arrived. Walsh died upon impact. An autopsy revealed alcohol in his bloodstream.

Fatal collision sentence too light: victim’s mother Continued from page 1
At about 4:45 a.m. that morning a newspaper delivery driver discovered his body and called police. The taxi stand owner moved quickly to track down Carswell. Swaine expects him to serve no more than two months. His lawyer, Sharon Anderson-Olmstead, was concerned for her client’s employability during the driving prohibition. She told the court he panicked after the collision, but is a hardworking person who is remorseful and lives a quiet life. Carswell co-operated with police along the way, making a statement after his arrest which spoke to his liability in the case. Justice Robert Selkirk said Carswell showed a pattern of callousness but was in no way responsible for the death. PAINFUL PROCESS
The legal process was painful in many ways for the victim’s family. Swaine attended court on two occasions. There are no set times, so in some circumstances victims must sit through proceedings for other cases all day long before theirs comes up. Swaine said the courts are filled with cases dealing with drug and alcohol
abuse. “There is no help for people who need. I tried for years to get Chris help. You have to want it too, but there’s no help,” Swaine said. “Everything we’d seen in that court was over drugs and alcohol. That courtroom is a joke. They do not punish people. They get a slap on the wrist.” In court the phrase “thought it was an animal” was constantly repeated to the point Swaine said she wanted to scream. “If you run anything over you need to make a phone call.” A family member’s nerves are frayed following the case, she added. But when it came to police and victim services and others in the system, Swaine was positive. “They were very good with us,” she said. “They can’t change the system.” As for reconciliation, it won’t happen any time soon. A member of Carswell’s family asked to meet Swaine but the latter wouldn’t have it. He is not permitted to make contact. “I don’t want him coming up to me to say sorry,” she said. However, she added that it is her understanding Carswell is thought less of in the community. She doesn’t FILE want to see him given a hard time. “Chris wouldn’t want him to be ha- Chris Walsh and Karen Giesbrecht, the mother of his four-month-old baby, during their short time together rassed.” in British Columbia. committee. But Stack will not lead the County of Renfrew for the next two-year term. “It’s just not my time,” he said. “I’m making a decision for Barbara and I and I’m quite comfortable with it.” Time for family is the reason; playing with his grandkids; travelling with his wife who retired last year: the priorities of a 68-year-old are not those of someone who must log 2,000 kilometres a month travelling across one of Ontario’s largest counties. The work is every day, he said. It isn’t how he repays Barb after many decades of letting him follow his interests. “To be quite honest, this is probably the first time in 45 years we’ve made a decision for ourselves. She’s earned this,” Stack said. “She has always supported me, and we have some plans.” Stack is well informed on various files, certainly at the town level, and offers plenty of insights and opinions to prove it. So his is a character that would immerse itself completely into
the work. He couldn’t go halfway. “I would have to be fully committed, that’s just the way I am,” he said. Stack contacted his challenger for the job, Bonnechere Valley Township Mayor Jennifer Murphy. On Tuesday, it was revealed that she won by acclamation. Stack believes that was a good thing in some ways. It contrasted Stack’s narrow loss to Town of Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon last time. “Jennifer will make a good warden.” He has no doubt the race to earn votes from county council colleagues would have been close, but Stack said that didn’t figure into his reasoning. Neither did health. He is fine healthwise, having recently gotten back from a few days hunting. The question is whether or not he will run again at the municipal level. “I’m still thinking positively about that,” he said. “I intend to stay involved in municipal affairs.” Then, referring to voters, “It’s not up to me in the end.”
Walter Stack attends the Remembrance Day ceremony. He has opted not to run for warden, citing family reasons.

Call 9-1-1 on suspected impaired drivers: OPP REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL 2016 Social Infrastructure Fund Investment in Affordable Housing for Ontario Rental Housing Component
The County of Renfrew is accepting proposals for the development of affordable rental housing within the County of Renfrew, to assist the County in meeting the objectives of the federal/provincial Social Infrastructure Fund.
A late night snack had to wait after officers from the Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police laid charges against a woman waiting for food at the Arnprior McDonald’s. One male and one female are each facing impaired driving related charges after complaints from members of the public. On Sunday, Nov. 13 shortly after 2 a.m. officers responded to a possible impaired female driver at McDonald’s
Restaurant. When officers arrived the suspect was stopped in a running vehicle waiting for her food. Officers investigated and the female failed a roadside alcohol-screening test. She was arrested and taken to the detachment for breath tests. At the conclusion of the investigation a 29-year-old female of Arnprior was charged with over 80mgs care or

Arnprior veteran chosen to read Act of Remembrance DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
It was a first for anyone from Arnprior to recite the Act of Remembrance at the annual Candlelight Tribute Ceremony on Nov. 7. For years, legion branch 174 has sent about 10 veterans to the ceremony hosted by Veterans Affairs Canada. It used to be at the civic centre, then Centrepointe Theatre, but has recently moved to the Canadian War Museum. The event sees the mayor of Ottawa reveal the veteran who will have a street named in their honour. It also has a veteran read the words: “They shall grow not old,/ as we that are left grow old./ Age shall not weary them,/ nor the years condemn [sic]./ At the going down of the sun,/ and in the morning./ We will remember them.” The audience of some 300 responds with “We will remember them.” This year the reciter was Arnprior’s Dan Lynch, who spent 25 years as a military police officer – from 1969 to 1994 - across Canada and overseas in

Another first at the event saw an Algonquin elder read the Act of Remembrance in his native tongue. In past years it was only read once in English and once in French. “He had it on a parchment of skin, which was kinda neat,” Lynch said. Candlelight ceremonies began in the Netherlands to show thanks and to honour those who liberated the country and its people from German oc-
cupation during the Second World War. In 1995, the people of the Netherlands held a special ceremony to commemorate their liberation by Canadian forces 50 years earlier. Dutch children placed lit candles on the graves of Canadian soldiers and the candles remained lit overnight in silent tribute. Residents were drawn to the cemeteries by the soft red glow of the candles burning in the dark. As a re-
sult, commemorative candlelight tributes have now become annual ceremonies in the Netherlands and other European countries. Similar tributes take place across Canada in both public and private cemeteries. Encouraging youth, their families, veterans and Canadian Forces members to interact with one another is an important element of the commemorative event.

OPINION
Connected to your community
Hard turn to the right
I
f you think back to your own interactions with individual Americans, you will probably remember them as kind and generous. But when acting in large groups – such as a federal election – Americans have a tendency to put themselves ahead of what’s good for the majority. If America got its collective policies in line with the individual ethos of being generous and helpful, Donald Trump would today be a footnote in history instead of the soon-enough most powerful man in the world. Americans are kind and they are big-hearted, but they don’t want to be told whom they should help. They want to decide that themselves. And that list seems to be growing shorter. How else to explain an election victory for Trump? His economic plan rests atop a promise to make people richer through trickle-down economics – tax cuts for the rich. It’s a system that encourages you to buy a lottery ticket – yes someone will get rich, but most will get poorer. And if you don’t win and get rich, it’s your fault because you didn’t try hard enough. You were afforded every opportunity. The United States seems destined to relearn history. Trickle-down policies will rev up the economy in the short term as the rich invest and reap massive rewards. But in the longer term, the bull market will die down and all that will be left are a few people at the top with bigger cars, bigger yachts and bigger off-shore bank accounts. That high society, enriched again, will no doubt fail to take care of the most vulnerable. Health care will be privatized. Publicly funded schools will be starved for resources. Shoulda tried harder, sucker. People at the bottom will try to survive day to day. They may beg on the streets and get a few coins in their cup from a fellow American who is generous enough to share one-on-one, but for some reason can’t stand the idea of helping a whole country live better.

Shame on Chronicle-Guide for reprint of Gallant press release To the editor:
Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant is a national embarrassment and, well, a bit dumb. Now, seeing as you are reading this in the letters to the editor section, it should be rather obvious that this statement is a matter of opinion and not necessarily fact. But imagine if you saw this lede in another section of the paper, or even ‘Cheryl Gallant’s statements confirm

Sand Point Lighthouse restoration complete A team of local Sand Point residents, supported by the McNab/Braeside Township council and the Sand Point Golf Club, have completed restoration work on the Sand Point lighthouse. Work included replacing several dozen cedar shingles (which form the exterior cladding), then cleaning, scraping and repainting the entire structure. The inside of the lighthouse also received attention to remove several years of accumulated dust, bugs and debris. As part of the project, the lighthouse color scheme was changed back to the original red and white scheme, consistent with its heritage character. An application for historical designation under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act, submitted several years, remains outstanding. The Sand Point lighthouse dates to the early 1900s and is one of very few of the original lighthouses on the Ottawa River between Montreal and Chalk River. It is the only original lighthouse remaining on the Chat’s Lake reach of the river, and indeed between Ottawa and the Pembroke/Deep River region. Furthermore, it is road accessible, unlike most other lighthouses, which typically can only be accessed by boat. Given the uncertain historical designation status, the lighthouse has not received proper maintenance for many years. Not wanting to see this deterioration continue unchecked, a group of local residences approached the responsible Federal agencies with a request to take matters into our own hands. the required site access agreement, and providing the required liability insurance coverage for the work. Robert Reid of the Sand Point Golf Course generously offered to cover the cost of paint, and the services of a professional painter. Repairs, cleaning and painting preparation were completed by volunteers Wayne O’Brien, Dave Pastway, Jamie Reid and John Brady of Sand Point. The total cost of the work was about $1,200, excluding volunteer labour. Our group’s plans for restoration work on the Sand Point wharf next summer include repairing the crumbling concrete stairs, residing an auxiliary building and adding a new layer of gravel. Our goal is to ensure that the Sand Point lighthouse is preserved, and the wharf remains available for the fisherman, swimmers and other visitors who regularly enjoy it.

These five Greater White-fronted Geese (the two top are adults) were among the dozen that recently visited the Madawaska Headpond at Arnprior. In autumn, most North American birds migrate west of the Mississippi River to Mexico. In earlier years, sightings of Greater White-fronts in the east were rare. But as have other species of geese, their populations have increased substantially in recent decades and sightings in the east are on the rise. Admittedly, I was tempted to drive to Arnprior early Wednesday morning to look for the White-fronted Geese but I had to give another lecture so with great angst I waited until it was done.
At 3 p.m. I left school but the traffic was heavy and excruciatingly slow, and only after what seemed an eternity did I finally break free, arriving at the Headpond with less than an hour of daylight left. To my disappointment many Canada Geese had left and others were just taking off. The remaining geese drifted east across the Headpond, pushed by strong winds. I scanned them and to my relief spotted four Greater Whitefronted Geese among them. Minutes later they too took to

They swam out into the water and after a few minutes they took to the air. Later, with the sun almost gone, I heard a strange, high-pitched call and looked up to see a single adult Greater White-fronted Goose fly in. It eventually landed, bringing the total number I had seen to 12, half of them adults.

Fall is an exciting time of year with northern birds such as Rough-legged Hawks and Snow Buntings coming south to our area. It is also the time for encountering strays such as the Greater White-fronted Geese that landed on the Madawaska Headpond. With weeks remaining until freeze-up, who knows what else might turn up there. Ray, you better get out your fishing rod again! The Nature Number is 613387-2503; email is mruntz@start. ca.

The new Braeside salt and sand shed, with access from River Road, was built in time for winter. Budgeted at $1.4 million, the facility comes just in time for what The Weather Network is calling a “classic Canadian winter season.” But it shouldn’t kick in until the mild fall pattern works through December.

Catholic school board hosts guest researcher from England Renowned researcher, Dr. Chris Brown, senior lecturer at University College London (UCL) Institute of Education in London, England, spent a week, from Sept. 19–23, visiting schools in the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board (RCCDSB). The purpose of his trip was to assess the impact of the professional learning and capacity-building efforts the board has been committed to for the past three years in relation to technology-enhanced teaching and learning. The RCCDSB’s CODE (Council of Ontario Directors of Education) and Provincial Knowledge Exchange (PKE) projects were the center of the research impact study. Both projects have played a major role in helping the board meet its strategic goals for the effective integration of technology into both teaching and learning. “We’re now into our fourth year and have made some major gains in getting technology into the classrooms across our district,” said Julia Graydon, RCCDSB Learning and Technology. “Now, we’re getting an outside critique of what we’re doing, what is working, and what we can improve on in implementation and measurement.” Graydon had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Brown when he was in Toronto to give the keynote address at the 2016 Ontario Education Research Symposium. He surmised that the Ministry of Education would be keen to know if its investment was making a difference. “When you are rolling out new programs, it is important to know what is effective and what isn’t and where improvements can be made.” So, he came to Renfrew County to talk to teachers, principals and the superintendents overseeing the projects to start developing an impact measurement approach. “It’s important to develop a framework to measure what you have done,” said Dr. Brown.
and the UCEA Jeffrey V. Bennett Outstanding International Research award. “It’s amazing to have Chris here as he is a renowned expert in the area of evidence informed practice,” said Graydon. Dr. Brown hopes return to Renfrew County early in the new year to present his report to the RCCDSB.

Dr. Brown was also awarded Graydon, along with Mark Searson the 2016 AERA Excellence in Research to Practice award and Jaimie Perry, RCCDSB superintendents of educational services, in getting behind this initiative. His visit will culminate in a report measuring the initial impact of the RCCDSB’s 21st Century Teaching and Learning and Provincial Knowledge Exchange programs. It will highlight and provide the board with feedback on how to enhance their capacity-building efforts in relation to effectively integrating technology into both teaching and learning. Dr. Brown has a longstanding interest in how evidence can aid education policy and practice. He has written four books and several papers and has presented in both Europe and North America. There are some positive signs that a fish species dating back to the time of the dinosaurs is making a comeback in the Ottawa Valley. Lake Sturgeon are prehistoric behemoths that have managed to bypass all sorts of obstacles, including a commercial fishery in Ontario prior to the 1960s, contamination from mining operations, and disruptions from numerous pulp and paper mills. The fish that can easily live to 100 years old has seen its population drop to the “threatened” level. It doesn’t help that sturgeon don’t begin to reproduce until they are about 20 years old, and even after that females might not spawn every year; it is more like every four to seven years. So it’s been a daunting task for those trying to bring back Canada’s largest freshwater fish that can weigh up to 180 kilograms (396 pounds) and be two meters long (6.5 feet). Ontario Power Generation (OPG) takes a leading role in stewardship of the species. For 25 years now it has run numerous protection and recovery programs dedicated to maintaining the integrity of the province’s lakes and rivers. Senior environmental spe-
cialist Dan Gibson has dedicated the even been cut into the Caspian and last eight years to travelling across Black Sea caviar, that’s how close the Ontario, tracking and relocating stur- taste is. geon. He is close to saying the species Many anglers in the region would could make a comeback on the Ottawa River. “We are seeing some very positive results,” Gibson said. “We are not at that point in our knowledge yet on the Ottawa to say for sure.” OPG puts a “significant” amount of money and seven to 14 workers on conservation files. They do tagging and netting during fall in places like the Chenaux Generating Station near Renfrew. Along with data related to height and weight and more, the company tracks the fish’s return to spawning areas. “Knowing where and when they spawn is crucial,” Gibson said. “We’ve seen some positive outcomes in the last year, especially on the Quebec side.” Recreational fishing for sturgeon is prohibited, of course. Gibson said few would want to keep them for consumption. They are a white-meat fish, but not flaky (more like catfish). And they are bottom feeders, so “It’s an acquired taste, I’d say.” The roe, on the other hand, is similar to the famous Russian caviar. North American lake sturgeon roe has

November 19, 2014 The moment that you died, My heart was torn in two, One side filled with heartache, The other died with you, I often lay awake at night, When the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down memory lane, With tears upon my cheeks. Remembering you is easy, I do it every day, But missing you is heartache, That never goes away. I hold you tightly within my heart, And there you will remain, Death leaves a heartache, No one can heal, Love leaves a memory, No one can steal. Lovingly remembered Your Wife Bonnie

Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us every day, Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed and very dear.
Dad, Gone is the face we loved so dear, Silent is the voice we loved to hear, Too far away for sight or speech, But not too far for thought to reach, Sweet to remember him who once was here, And who, though absent, is just as dear

Packers win in overtime versus Athens Tartan Tuff Trek on Nov. 26 TIFFANY LEPACK tlepack@metroland.com
It’s a dog fight for first place in the Richardson Division of the Central Canada Tier 2 Hockey League and the Arnprior Packers are right in the thick of things. The Packers won both games on the weekend. Currently they have 35 points behind both the Richmond Royals and the Perth Blue Wings who have 36 points. On Wednesday, Nov. 16 the Packers host the Royals at 8 p.m. “We are battling between Richmond and Perth,” said Tony Iob, Packers head coach. “Every game against them is important. It will be a very good game.” On Saturday, Nov. 19, the Packers hit the road to face the Char-Lan Rebels, who are in seventh place in the Martin Division at 8 p.m. The Packers will have a rematch against the Royals on Nov. 27 in Richmond at 2:30 p.m. Arnprior 7, Brockville 3 The Packers took an early lead against the seventh place Tikis on Nov. 11 at the Nick Smith Centre and never looked back.
Daniel Monk (assisted by Bailey Hein and Ryan Bangs), Tyler Orban (assisted by Payton Jardine and Jesse Dick) and Mathew Labrosse (unassisted on the power play) all scored for the Packers in the opening frame. Dick, an Arnprior native, has been called up from the Pembroke under-18 team, had two assists in the game. “He did very well and we were really impressed,” said Iob on Dick’s play. “For a rougher game he definitely stood in there.” The Tikis answered back in the second period with two goals but the Packers kept with them with two more goals by Andrew MacKinnon and Brad Richardson. “They are a younger team and just kept coming,” said Iob. “They worked hard and created chances and our guys responded very well.” In the third the Tikis could only manage on more as the Packers responded with two by Ben Sellers and Richardson. Backup goalie Anthony Salahor made 23 saves in net. “He did very well,” said Iob. “Tom (Meyerhans) and him are very good tandem together.” Athens 1, Arnprior 2 OT It was a tight game for the Packers
against the sixth place Athens Aeros on Nov. 12 on the road. The game was scoreless until Richardson got on the score sheet for the Packers at 1:49 of the second period. “It was a good game,” said Iob. “It was a back and forth affair.” Athens forced the extra frame at 19:49 of the third period with a goal by Connor Burns with an extra attacker on the ice. “They got lucky at the end, the goal trickled in,” said Iob. The Packers finished them off early in the last stanza as Labrosse scored the overtime winner just 54 seconds in assisted by Hein. “Our top line was pretty dominant, they had a lot of chances in the game. They attacked well, Mathew came across the blue line and he had a good open shot, you could see it from the bench, he has a nice shot.” Labrosse is leading the team in scoring with 47 points. He has played 22 games and scored 23 goals. Meyerhans made 44 saves in the game and Iob says he was the difference maker. “He played fantastic, he definitely brought his A game,” said Iob. He was the reason we won the game.”
The City of Ottawa is likely one of the finest cities in Canada with the Parliament Buildings, the canal, the many museums, the multiple festivals, and the myriad of organized races, runs and walks. The Race Weekend in May is world famous and the Army Run in the autumn is anticipated by the entire running community. As wonderful and great and important as these events are, they have a common thread: warm weather, paved lanes, no snow, no wind chill. One could call them latte runs: a lot of foam and froth but limited caffeine. But there is an alternative: an event that takes place in late November. There could be snow, there could be freezing rain and sleet, the wind chill could be numbing. There are no paved streets, there are not foliage covered trees that sway graciously to the sounds of Samba music. There is just bare trail, trees stripped of all leaves and just the sound of the coming winter plaintively crying in the wind. This is not a run for lovers of fair weather, not a run for most. This run is the second annual Tartan Tuff Trek.
It is a five-kilometre run or walk along the McNab/Braeside Recreational Trail. After the run there is no latte or fancy coffee. But there is plenty of plain coffee, tea, hot chocolate, water, and five types of chili (one for each kilometre). The first 60 to sign up will get the 2016 edition of the coveted TTT Neck Warmer. Every dollar raised by the event goes to the Arnprior McNab Braeside NeighbourLink – The Fountain. Not a run for the latte crowd, so the question is: are you tough enough to take this challenge? Where: Dochart Soccer Fields (278 Duncan Dr., Township of McNab/Braeside) When: Saturday Nov. 26, 10 a.m. (registration starts at 9 a.m.), Tiny Tartan Run at 9:30 a.m. Fees - $20 individual, $40 family, $2 for Tiny Tartan Advance registration: Township of McNab/Braeside municipal office , 2508 Russet Dr., The Fountain - 128 Mary St., Arnprior (10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday), Robertson’s Furniture - 137 John Street North, Arnprior, The Cupboard, 105 John St. North, Arnprior . All proceeds to the NeighbourLink Fountain - donations of $10 or more.

Mary feels blessed for magic, miracles of Depression years It was hard for me to figure out the difference between magic and a miracle. My sister Audrey said they were just about the same thing. And yet I knew in my heart, that a miracle was an act of God. Hadn’t our Lutheran minister said so? But both miracles and magic were all around me on our farm in Northcote, and I was hard pressed to tell the difference. It gave me plenty to think about. It was surely magic how Myrtle the telephone operator knew exactly where everyone was at any given time in Northcote. Many was the time our phone would ring and it would be Myrtle to say someone’s barn was on fire, and the whole community would be in a turmoil. Or she would announce that the Saturday night house party was at the Thom’s. Now, how she would know all this to me was pure magic. And a miracle happened, or maybe it was magic, every single night right in our summer kitch-
en. The fresh milk was brought in in milk cans, I thought bluish in colour, and some miracle happened during the night. By morning, when I was sent out with the strainer and the big brown bowl, the entire tops of the cans would be yellow with cream! Now how the cream came to the top, without the help of anyone’s hand, to me, was pure magic. And how, if I fell asleep on top of someone’s bed while visiting at a Saturday night house party, without my even being aware of it, I would be moved, and I would waken in my own bed in the morning! Now, how could that be? Magic? I thought so. More often than by sheer chance, my Uncle Lou always seemed to appear when we needed him most. Mother would be lonely, missing all that she had
Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK
left behind in her beloved New York, and there would be Uncle Lou’s big black Buick with the gold eagle on the hood coming in our long lane. I called our Uncle Lou our miracle. Or when Mother’s egg money failed to meet our everyday needs, and there wasn’t enough money to even buy coal oil for the lamps, a letter would arrive from Uncle Lou, and tucked inside would be an American $20 bill. I knew that was a miracle, and not magic. And of course, the fact that both Mother and Miss Crosby knew what was going on around them without as much as raising their eyes from whatever they were busy at, to me was magic. I often closed my eyes and
tried to figure out what was happening a few feet away, and could see absolutely nothing! No, with Mother and Miss Crosby, that had to be magic. And one of the biggest miracles of all to me, was when winter had settled in, and even with the snow banked against the outside walls of our house, stockings crammed into the frames of the windows, the old log house was still drafty and cold. Even the Findlay Oval was no match for the cold of the winter’s blasts. And yet, when I would go to the stable with Father at night, as I often did, the barns would be as warm as toast. There was no stove, no stove pipe, nothing to bring in heat, and yet the cows were warm to touch, and the horses, at one end of the barn, were toasty warm, too. Was that magic, or a miracle? It was a question with no answer. But surely the biggest miracle of all was that we were able to survive the Depression rag-
ing all around us. The Ottawa Farm Journal, without fail, showed long lines of men lined up in the big cities, looking for food vouchers, or a place to sleep, or any job that would help put food on their own tables. And there we were, out in Northcote, with a smoke house full of meat, cellar shelves crammed with jars of pickles, preserves and vegetables in brine. And there were always eggs, chickens and sticky buns to peddle door to door in Renfrew to bring in a few cents to buy what we could not grow ourselves. And at every meal our table was laden with food. Never once did we ever feel hungry in a country where there was so much hunger. Surely, that was the biggest miracle of all. Light up the Night kids’ Halloween event another success The Light Up The Night kids’ event held at River Stone Christian Fellowship on Madawaska Street was a busy place filled with fun, games, treats, and kids in costume everywhere. Organizers Bev Moorhead and Murielle Egan joined more than 30 volunteers from three churches to provide a safe kids’ event for Halloween night. Looney Tunes cartoons were projected on a big screen for all to enjoy as parents watched over their children and sipped on coffee. Smiling volunteers welcomed kids at each game to cheer them on and hand out treats. The wet sponge toss was a great success with returned visits by many who attempted to soak the volunteer. The activities included pumpkin bowling, ball tosses, hoop throwing, and a creepy black light tunnel to crawl through. Children’s names were entered into a prize draw for gifts that will be delivered to their homes. The event is sponsored every year by a group of local churches, including: Arnprior Wesleyan Church, Glad Tidings Pentecostal Church, and River Stone Christian Fellowship. Volunteers expressed their thanks to all who came and enjoyed the evening.
On Oct. 31,The Light Up The Night kids’ event held at River Stone Christian Fellowship saw a little holstein calf Hope Young, far left, and brother Emmanuel caught by the camera while playing ‘Match in the Patch.’ Tristan Neadow 6, with dad looking on, is getting ready to throw the wet sponge.
