A trio of high-profile Arnprior cases are making their way through the court system or have been settled. On Dec. 9 Brittany Hulan is expected to make a plea in Renfrew court. She is the former Rexall Pharmacy employee accused in late July of stealing narcotics from the Daniel Street location. Hulan is charged with two counts of theft under $5,000 and four counts of trafficking in a schedule 1 drug. On Feb. 17, 2016, Mustapha ‘Moe’ Fakih will go to trial in Pembroke. He is the long-time pizza store owner accused of starting the July 2014 fire at Moe’s Pita Place on Madawaska Street. See DRIVER, page 6

Hundreds fewer workers in the next decade means Arnprior must find ways to attract more immigrants. That was the message Chela Breckon brought to the Nov. 23 town council meeting. The project manager at Renfrew and Lanark’s Local Immigration Partnership, an Ontario-wide initiative begun in 2008, compared Arnprior’s working-age people with children and seniors, both now and in 2025. In 2015 there are: • 5,100 (57% of population) people of working age; • 2,200 (25%) seniors; • 1,650 (18%) youth. In the year 2025, the projections are: • 4,500 (48% of population) of working age; • 3,200 (35%) seniors; • 1,600 (17%) youth. That means there will be 300 fewer workers to fill the 800 jobs. With fewer workers come fewer tax dollars to pay for rising service needs – such as health care – of aging baby boomers. One solution involves attracting new Canadians. “The population spread will change dramatically,” Breckon said.

Arnprior teenager Thomas Cherney has received the top mark in Ontario from the Royal Conservatory of Music for his performance in a voice examination. The Royal Conservatory issued a news release last week to congratulate the 13-year-old for winning a gold medal for scoring the top mark in the province on the Level 6 exam. Cherney received the award on Sunday, Nov. 22 at a public ceremony in Toronto at the Royal Conservatory’s Koerner Hall. He is taught by music teacher and Arnprior Community Choir founder and director, Lisa Webber, who lives in Braeside. It’s not the first time Cherney has been in the musical spotlight. He was named the top musical theatre performer at the 2013 National Shine Dance Competition. Royal Conservatory regional gold medals are awarded each academic year (Sept. 1 to Aug. 31) to conservatory examination candidates in Preparatory A and B and Grades 1 to 10 who achieve the highest mark in their respective province or designated region. Eligible candidates must score at least 80 per cent on their practical examination and must have completed the co-requisite theory examinations for
their respective grade and discipline. Gold medal ceremonies are held annually in cities across Canada, often in conjunction with convocation ceremonies, to recognize students’ achievements and acknowledge the contributions of their teachers. The Royal Conservatory of Music is one of the largest and most respected music and arts education institutions in the world. Providing the definitive standard of excellence in music education through its curriculum, assessments, performances and teacher education programs, the Conservatory has had a substantial impact on the lives of millions of people globally. The Royal Conservatory Certificate Program provides a recognized standard of musical achievement through an effectively sequenced course of study and individual student examinations from beginner to advanced levels. Each year, nearly 100,000 examinations are written in communities across North America. For more information, or to register for an examination, visit rcmusic.ca.

Bylaw will leave homeowners with bills for frozen pipes
Last winter, a particularly frosty one, resulted in the town responding to 30 frozen pipe incidents. Half were on public property, half Arnprior residents will likely pay out of private. Town staff attended to each – costing pocket if water pipes freeze on their own prop- taxpayers about $21,000. The town’s budget for the service was only erty this winter. Town staff recommended at the Nov. 23 $1,300. “The frigid 2014/2015 winter season resulttown council meeting to keep paying for damage to water mains and pipes that lead to the ed in several frozen water services and broken edge of private properties. However, if a pipe sewer services as the frost drove deep into the breaks on a resident’s side the owner will have ground,” reads the ‘Frozen Water Service Policy’ by public works director Guy Bourgon. to deal with it. “Impacted homeowners sought asKevin Dodds sistance from the town. As the town Gallery has moved towards a cost recovery 47 John St., Arnprior system of fee collection in support of council’s ‘pay as you go’ direction, Open staff does not recommend offering Thursday to Sunday for the thawing service for free on private the month of December property.” 10am-6pm Pipes from newer homes are usualOther days by ly buried deep enough that frost can’t appointment only affect them. 613-286-8512 Some residents in older homes alkevin@kevindoddsart.com low a trickle of water to continuously www.kevindoddsart.com pass through pipes to prevent freezDerek Dunn

ing. Staff does not recommend this approach for those who leave their homes for weeks at a time. Have a neighbour come in frequently to run the taps instead, they suggest. The town uses a small hot water unit to thaw pipes. It also has a controversial 1950s electrical thawing machine that hasn’t been used in seven years. Electrical units are no longer produced for fear of litigation, and fires have resulted from their use, most recently in Montreal last winter. Town staff investigated best practices among neighbouring municipalities. Petawawa is not responsible for frozen services. Perth limits the thawing to two incidents per winter. Renfrew pays all costs associated with a plumber for thawing services. Mississippi Mills and Carleton Place use their own workers and do not charge homeowners. “The above applies to services between the main and the residence,” reads the report. “Sudbury employs hot water first and electrical thawing only if that does not work.” Ottawa is the opposite of all others in that it prefers electrical thawing over hot water. “There are many cases of fires being caused by electrical thawing as recently as last winter,” according to the report. “Even though infrequent, there have been instances of property damage in Ottawa and Arnprior. “Staff does not recommend returning to the use of the electrical thawing method.” Mayor David Reid agreed, saying a house fire is one thing – but an electrocution is entirely different.
“I agree we shouldn’t use electrical thawing units,” he said. “Electrical should be the very, very, very last resort.” Staff will bring forward a bylaw at the Dec. 14 council meeting with the following recommendations: • Public works attends the site, locates and checks the curb stop to see if it is frozen; • If it can be closed, resident is responsible to hire a plumber to thaw private service; • If the curb stop is frozen, public works uses Magikist hot water unit to attempt to thaw from the building to main; • If unsuccessful, public works may hydrovac to the curb stop to thaw from there. Alternatively, town may hire a plumber with a larger hot water unit to thaw the line; • In rare occurrences, an excavation of the water service at the main may be required to access the main stop to thaw from there; • Town responsible for plumber bills only when present onsite to verify blockage on public property. Reeve Walter Stack said the budgeted $1,300 was constant for the past four or five years. It could return to that level this year, which is expected to be warmer. So the town doesn’t need to set aside a lot more. “I don’t want to overreact to one winter,” he said. “Yes, on my property, my problem. But some guidance from the town would be nice.” The guidance was first suggested by Coun. Ted Strike. He called for a communication flyer for homeowners with bulleted directions and contacts.

EnergyEast to host public meeting on pipeline safety Staff
Renfrew County residents and fire officials are being given an opportunity to discuss pipeline safety in a meeting in Renfrew next week. TransCanada, which has proposed to build the Energy East Pipeline from the Prairies through Ontario to the Maritimes, is hosting a Safety and Emergency Response Information Day at the Renfrew Days Inn (formerly Best Western) on Thursday, Dec. 10. It is one of a series of information meetings that includes a session in Carp Dec. 9. TransCanada technical experts will meet with area firefighters and other emergency officials from noon to 3 p.m. The public part of the session runs from 4 to 8 p.m. The meetings will focus on pipeline safety and emergency management for the pipeline
that runs down the Upper Ottawa Valley through Admaston-Bromley, Horton and McNab-Braeside, crossing the Bonnechere and Madawaska rivers before heading through the Pakenham area and south of Ottawa. Part of the proposal in this area includes the turning of an existing natural gas pipeline into an oil pipeline. At the Dec. 9 meeting, TransCanada officials will answer questions about pipeline safety, shut-off valves, inspection and monitoring systems and emergency response preparedness, both during the construction period and when the pipeline goes into operation. The presentation will feature interactive demonstrations as well as activities for children. For more information on the pipeline project and the series of safety meetings, visit www. energyeastpipeline.com.

Driver who ran over wife fined $2,500 for careless driving Fakih, who has pleaded not guilty, is charged with two counts of arson: specifically ‘disregard for human life’ and ‘damage to own property.’ The third case was settled last summer. Clive Mimnagh was ac-

‘Attract new Canadians to labour market’ Continued from front
“One way we can solve this looming labour crisis is to welcome newcomers to the labour market.” Local Immigration Partnership is linked to Employment Ontario, Algonquin College, Upper Ottawa Valley Chamber of Commerce, and various social service agencies, and is funded and created by the federal government’s Citizen and Immigration Canada. It works to attract immigrants and “value diversity” through ethnic food festivals and other
cultural activities. It also works to retain immigrant workers (at Chalk River Laboratories and elsewhere) by promoting English as a second language training and more. Another chart Breckon showed had to do with the demographic imbalance across Canada. In 1971 there were 6.6 people of working age for every senior. In 2012 there were 4.2. In the year 2036 that number will drop to 2.3. Arnprior is worse, now, than the national average was 44 years ago: 1.95 working age people for every senior.

Breckon said new Canadians are the type of people who create and build businesses. Welleducated, about 65 per cent arrive with a post-secondary education; over half obtain it after arrival. They take chances (otherwise they would never have risked leaving their birth country.) Many are willing to work hard to advance prospects for their children. And they enrichen Canadian society. “Immigrants are adventuresome and entrepreneurial,” she said. “New cultures will only improve the outcome of lives.”
She added that immigrants can build bridges between nations. Knowing the language and customs makes for easier business relations. ChineseCanadians have fostered many economic ties with China, for instance. Immigrants also offer fresh ideas to existing challenges, both socially and in business. “The bottom line is we need to attract, integrate and retain new residents in order to sustain our economy, public services and community vitality,” Breckon said.

Arnprior’s rewards program for customers who have shopped locally has proven popular. As a result, the campaign of giving out a $100 worth of local shopping each month in a draw will be extended into 2016, the town’s economic development officer Lindsay Wilson announced last week.
The monthly prize can be spent at any of the participating businesses in Arnprior. There are now 59 merchants in the program. Saturday was ‘Shop the Neighbourhood Day’ in Arnprior, as shoppers received two stamps for their draw cards with every purchase made at participating businesses. Ten stamps are needed to enter the draw. Customers can pick up cards to be stamped from stores involved in the shop
local program or at town hall. Carolyn McCue of Arnprior was the lucky winner for November. The prize can be used at any of the businesses involved with the initiative. There will be one more winner this year, when December’s draw is made in early January. The promotion is a partnership between the Greater Arnprior Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Arnprior.
Arnprior economic development officer Lindsay Wilson, left, and Greater Arnprior Chamber of Commerce president Murray Hughes, right, congratulate the November Live Love Local campaign winner. Carolyn McCue is presented with her $100 prize by Arnprior Mayor David Reid. SCOTT CAMPBELL/ METROLAND
Construction projects in town up by $4M Derek Dunn
derek.dunn@metroland.com
Almost $4 million more was spent on construction projects this year in Arnprior over 2014. According to the town community development advisory committee’s (CDAC) annual report, the town issued 135 building permits from October 2014 and October 2015. The construct value was almost $11 million last year and $14.7 million this year. More than half were for homes. That means the town took in $200,000 more in permit fees and development charges. Coun. Lynn Grinstead is chairwoman of the committee that lends advice to council related to community improvement, economic development, marketing, planning and land use, growth management, development, heritage, leisure and recre-
ation services, and tourism activities. Grinstead detailed the work done and meetings held dating back to early May when the committee was formed. At that time the group heard overviews of the town’s official plan review and the retail demand study. It was also given an overview of the chief building official’s role, and the key initiatives of both the recreation department and the town museum. BR+E
In July, CDAC was given a presentation on a Business Retention and Expansion (BR+E) program. “It would be beneficial to the municipality to undertake a BR+E to demonstrate the municipality’s support of existing businesses and at the same time identify the gaps/strengths and growth opportunities of local businesses,” Grinstead said.
The recreation master plan and details of upcoming summer events such as Priorpalooza was given to the group. In September it was provided details on the $12-million downtown revitalization plan. CDAC advised council to implement a downtown accessibility incentive program at the same time. Municipal heritage was discussed, along with the age-friendly community plan. As were the topics of pool piping and resurfacing, and off-road vehicles. Earlier this month, the group discussed accessibility incentive program and suggested the grant values to businesses be increased. Council has yet to vote on the issue. Other members of the committee include Coun. Tom Burnette as vice-chairman, Neil Caldwell, Steve Dontginy, Gib McMullen, Dennis Turpin and Darryl O’Shaughnessy.

OPINION
Connected to your community
There must be a better way C hristy Natsis will be home for Christmas. Unfortunately for Bryan Casey’s family, he will never again be coming home for Christmas. It’s no surprise the news Friday that Natsis is being granted bail was greeted with anger and disgust on social media and coffee shops up and down the Valley. It certainly is casting our justice system in a bad light. There is no denying the Pembroke woman has the right to appeal being sentenced to five years in jail for impaired and dangerous driving that led to the death of Casey on Highway 17 near Arnprior almost five years ago. But the way the case has agonizingly stumbled through the court system and now will continue to drag out even longer, has the public fed up, for good reason. Everyone is entitled to a fair trial. However, this case, one of the longest trials in local memory (at 55 days, it’s 10 times longer than the average impaired driving trial, lawyers say), has tested people’s faith in the justice system. The botched police work, the nit-picking and foot-dragging by the defence team, and the tendency to try to blame the victim is bad enough. But what really frosts people is the failure of
the perpetrator to take any kind of responsibility for her actions. Originally represented by a top Ottawa team of lawyers, now Natsis has hired a couple of Canada’s highest profile lawyers from Toronto in an attempt to get her conviction quashed. That just reinforces the perception there is one law for the rich and another for the rest of us. Everyone makes mistakes. But most of those who ill-advisedly drive while impaired accept their fates and don’t drag their victims and court officials through a long, drawn-out, expensive (for taxpayers as well as themselves) court process. Having a case drag on so long isn’t helpful to anyone, especially not the victims. Instead of letting such cases be determined by technicalities and smooth-talking barristers, an element of restorative justice needs to be implemented. The case shouldn’t revolve around abstract legal principles, but instead work out a way for the culprit to take responsibility for her actions, for the victims to find closure and for the community to be satisfied the penalty is dramatic enough to act as a deterrent. This is certainly not happening in this case and that’s a crime.

ments are that she is a racist. Too often this charge is hurled at people to intimidate and stop debate. Mr. Edge wants to accept the UN and unnamed security experts that refugees are properly screened. I do not share his confidence in the UN, a dysfunctional organization that put Iran in charge of their committee on Human Rights. I, on the other hand, want to listen to the Head of the FBI, who says Syria is a failed state with no infrastructure and there is no possible way of safely vetting any identity claims made by Syrian refugees. The Head of Homeland Security in the U.S. has similar concerns. I am pleased to see even our
new Prime Minister has amended his stance on his unrealistic campaign promise to accept 25,000 refugees by the end of the year. Better healthcare than us
I agree with Mr. Edge that our clinics are “underfunded and overflowing with us.” I do not see this situation improving after we increase the number of refugees and give them better coverage than average Canadians. Unlike Mr. Edge, I do not blame Ms. Gallant for health care underfunding, as that is a provincial jurisdiction and the 10 years of McGuinty/Wynne have been a disaster.

I agree with our Member of Parliament that priority should be given to Christian refugees, but I would also add Yazidi Muslims and Kurds to the priority list. In an area of the world where it is tough to identify any good guys, Muslims are killing other Muslims, but they are trying to eradicate off the face of the earth Christians, Yazidis and Kurds. In conclusion, I would like to point out to Mr. Edge that to myself and a lot of other Conservatives who follow the U.S. election, being compared to Ted Cruz is no insult. Tony Eitzen Arnprior

book promotes responsibility
Arnprior author Gina Pilon used the lessons from her own life to write a book on personal responsibility ‘Responsibility: Discover 14 Key Essentials for Breaking the Victim Chain and Claiming Personal Freedom’, published by Balboa Press, delivers to readers the “crucial lessons” she has learned from personal experience. It also stems from her efforts to help others live lives free of unnecessary pain and suffering. Pilon is a self-empowerment coach guiding clients to claim their power through taking responsibility. The mother of seven says her personal journey from victim to self-actualized teacher and coach has given her a second chance at life. Her book outlines 14 fundamental guidelines to help readers transform from being a wounded person who hurts oneself and others to becoming a healed person who loves oneself and others. “We have become a society that is quick to blame and judge,” Pilon says in a news release. “Not many people are prepared to really do what it takes to live a life that is free by letting go of their wounds and taking responsibility for how they show up in the world. As a consequence we have a pandemic of sick people, not just physically, but emotionally as well.” An excerpt from ‘Responsibility’: “Nothing grants freedom faster than taking responsibility for our own life. Until we do that, we are always at the mercy of something outside ourselves.” ‘Responsibility’ is 140 pages long www.edwardjones.com and is available in You’re Invited hardcover, softcover and as an E-book from Amazon and Barnes & Noble. back in the house the next morning. What is Frostbite? Animals have ways of dealing with cold temperatures, but when exposed to extreme freezing temperatures for an extended period of time, these same mechanisms that work to keep them warm and alive can actually cause damage and death to the tissues of their extremities such as the tips of ears, tail, and foot pads.
to your pet. The same also occurs when tissues are dead. Seek veterinary care immediately since secondary infections can sometimes result from gangrene tissues. Wrap your pet in a blanket

Pet Talk
Signs of Frostbite - Symptoms to look for if your pet has been outdoors and you suspect it may be suffering from frostbite: • shivering; • ce on body and limbs; • tissues are bright red followed by pale color (vasoconstriction) to black color (death of tissue). First Aid: • do not apply snow or ice; • do not rub or massage the frozen tissue; • dry gently after you have the warmed the area; • if it is a limb or paw that is frozen, soak it only in a bath or bowl of warm water; • warm the affected area rapidly with warm water using towels or warmed ice packs; • do not immerse your pet completely in a bath, as this will cause the body temperature to decrease and cause hypothermia. Prevent Self-Trauma When the tissues are warmed it may cause some discomfort
R0013585335-1203
It is a misconception to believe that cats and dogs can withstand cold temperatures because they have fur. Some large dog breeds are well equipped for the winter months and love to be outdoors while others like small breed dogs are more sensitive and have no tolerance for the colder temperature. Even a quick moment outside to do its business is all it takes for a little Dachshund’s paws to freeze up and have him shivering. Cats usually don’t stay outdoors for long when it’s very cold. They might make a quick pounce and come right back into the house. Always make a note of the upcoming forecast before letting your cat out. It might be colder the next day and if kitty hasn’t come home he or she will be more at risk to developing frostbite and hypothermia, especially if no one is around to let them

Grade 8 student Donald Arsenault, who along with Grade 7 student Adam McCaig was credited with creating the inspiration behind the final new logo design, said his pick was definitely for the Guardians. “Our whole class was coming up with names and I liked the Guardians the best,” he said. Adam said he worked on his logo idea at school and then brought it home for a few more hours of work. “I wanted to design something that represented we are a Catholic school and we play multiple sports,” Adam said. It appears the students did a great job on their branding work as new look, and new name, t-shirts, sweatshirts and other gear were popular items at the Nov. 12 parent interview night according to vice-principal Derek Lennox.

Following a school-wide effort, St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Arnprior has a new logo and a new team name. The school’s teams will now be known as the St. Joseph Guardians. St. Joseph will retain its traditional royal blue and orange school colours. It didn’t have a team nickname prior to embracing Guardians. While it was school administration who decided it was time for a new school identity, they left it up to the students as to what that identity would look like. Students, organized by class, were tasked with coming up with their ideas for the new name. The names were submitted to the parents’ council, which whittled the list down to a manageable handful. The choices were sent back to the students who then voted on their favourite.

All good things must come to an end
Still, the sound of breaking ice arose the curiosity of three distant River Otters, which raised their heads inquisitively and loudly snorted their indignation at having an intruder on their lake. A creek flowing through the marsh was unfrozen, so I paddled up it. Otter tracks and droppings regularly adorned the snowy banks; those youngsters certainly had been busy! I passed by an old, abandoned beaver lodge and wondered where the Beavers were living this year. I paddled around the eastern side of the lake and encountered a male Bufflehead and 27 Common and four Hooded mergansers. Perhaps due to the impending weather the ducks seemed nervous and didn’t allow close approach. Eventually, with some reluctance, I headed back, but just before I reached my launching spot, I discovered where the Beavers had relocated. Behind a rocky point resided a brand new lodge and massive food pile. Near the lodge virtually every shoreline alder had been felled for building materials. The lodge was situated along the shore and appeared to lie on top of boulders, for it had an atypical shape. Soon after I stepped on the lodge, a Muskrat appeared in the food pile. It is known that Beavers occasionally share their lodge with Muskrats, but I had only seen that once before. I could hear the Beaver moving inside its lodge, but it failed to make an appearance. I expect that the lodge will be gone by spring, for at winter’s end the Petawawa River rises spectacularly and roars into Travers with a vengeance. Perhaps the Beavers will return to the marsh. If so, I should find out on next year’s early spring canoe outing! The Nature Number is 613-387-2503; email is mruntz@start.ca.

This newly constructed Beaver lodge (with a food pile to its right) may not survive the surging waters of the Petawawa River next spring.

Every season brings a fresh array of predictable faces. Bouquets of wildflowers accompany spring. With summer arrive armies of dragonflies. Cacophonies of geese herald autumn’s return. And winter drifts in with silent white landscapes and squadrons of northern finches. Those highlights can be enjoyed when walking, the style of footMichael Runtz wear necessarily changing seasonally. Snowshoes replace hikers, Nature’s Way but leg power still gets their wearers where they want to go. In some seasons, water offers novel ways to see the natural world. To me, nothing is more enjoyable than silently gliding along a shore in a canoe. A cedar/canvas canoe is the ultimate, for its wooden skeleton flexes with your movements, and it becomes an extension of your body. Each year I try to get in one last outing just before freeze-up. This year it took place on Nov. 26 on Lake Travers in Algonquin. Because the day was heavily overcast (rain was forecast), dawn wasn’t much of a spectacle. The temperature held near freezing, but the lake seemed free of ice and only a mild breeze caressed its surface, so conditions were fine for my final outing. The sheltered bays seemed particularly calm for they offered perfect reflections of the dark gray clouds. When I headed for shore, I quickly learned the reflections were due not to calm water but to ice! Fortunately, my canoe sliced through the thin veneer without difficulty or excessive noise.

Fraudsters ‘phishing’ on the phone for your ‘phunds’ to collect customer information for the purpose of committing fraud, warn the OPP. It is also known as ‘brand spoofing’, they note. The new twist fraudsters are attempting is they are using some type of software to clone local phone numbers on your call display, also known as caller ID spoofing, believing you will be more trusting dealing with someone you believe to be from your town. Police say the fraud is sales oriented or charity related. People report they often see their own phone number on call display, or that of local schools or businesses.
“If in doubt don’t pick up,” advise the OPP. To protect yourself from phone fraud, police suggest you: • don’t give personal information over the phone; • get facts in writing prior to giving donations; • if you haven’t bought a ticket you haven’t won a prize;

Police have issued a warning about a new twist on a common ‘phishing fraud’ being attempted over the phone in the Arnprior and Renfrew areas. The OPP explain that phishing is any e-mail falsely claiming to be from an established legitimate organization such as a financial institution, business or government agency. The e-mail may request or direct the consumer to visit a certain website to update or provide personal and/or financial information and passwords. However, it is really a “malicious attempt”

Give people ability to vote down power projects: Yakabuski Staff
Power to the people That’s what Renfrew-NipissingPembroke MPP John Yakabuski says
will happen if his Energy Referendum Private Member’s Bill is passed. Yakabuski introduced the Energy Referendum Act, 2015 in the Ontario Legislature last week, explaining that
it will put power in the hands of citizens so they can determine whether or not they want large-scale renewable energy projects in their communities.

Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant has been named the Conservatives critic for regional development for Northern Ontario. Gallant joined Rona Ambrose, leader of the official opposition and interim leader of the Conservative Party, for the announcement of the shadow cabinet position on Nov. 24. Gallant held a similar role when the Conservatives were in power. The Northern Ontario ridings are dominated by Liberal and NDP members. “I was ready to receive the call from Ms. Ambrose asking if I would serve in the shadow cabinet for the official opposition as a designated critic,” said Gallant in a news release. “As the critic for FedNor in the 37th Parliament, I was recognized for the work I did previously in that role. Experience counts. RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke shares many of the same issues with our friends in Northern Ontario. “In the last Parliament, I was pleased to receive letters of support from Northern Ontario municipalities for my Private Member’s legislation
to protect jobs in the working forest.” Gallant noted the Nipissing section of her riding comes under the mandate of FEDNor. “When I was first elected, as an effective critic in opposition, I brought programming and funding. Until I advocated on behalf of my Nipissing constituents, they had been ignored and neglected,” she maintained. “With the Trudeau government promising to run successive deficits, in the past rural communities have been the first to suffer. I promise to fight hard on behalf of my constituents and the neglected people of Northern Ontario.” “I believe the team we have assembled will be the strongest Official Opposition this country has ever seen,” said Ambrose. “I am proud to lead this team of talented and respected individuals from across Canada.” She noted more than 5.6 million Canadians voted for the Conservative Party on Oct. 19, including more than 26,000 voters in Renfrew-NipissingPembroke, leading to one of the “strongest oppositions to a majority government in Canadian history.”

as to whether or not these projects go ahead,” he added. “People should be able to directly decide on whether or not these projects come into their communities.” Yakabuski noted that Premier Kathleen Wynne and her ministers are constantly saying how open and transparent their government is. If they want their actions to meet their own rhetoric, they should support his PMB, he said. “I want to take the decision about the placement of large-scale renewable energy projects out of the backroom and put it into the hands of the people. It is local residents who will be the most impacted by this decision, so they should be the ones who ultimately decide” said Yakabuski. “If the Premier earnestly wants to reach out to rural Ontario, she can do so by supporting my bill and give local residents the final say.”

The Act would require a local government to hold a referendum before a large-scale renewable energy project could proceed within that municipality’s borders. If the vote indicates support for the proposal, then the development would continue along the process as they do so today. If, however, a local municipality’s residents indicate through referendum that they are not a willing host than the renewable energy projects may not proceed. Under the current process, the projects can go ahead against the opinion of a majority of residents within a community, maintained Yakabuski. “Given the substantial impact these large-scale renewable energy projects can have on local property values, tourism, wildlife populations, and even the landscape creates a situation where the stakes are very high

The blast of winter weather this week has prompted the Ontario Provincial Police to remind motorists to remain attentive while driving on local highways this winter. The biggest concern for winter driving is speed. Please slow down, police urge. Driving too fast for road conditions is the number one cause of winter collisions.
The OPP offer these safety tips: • install four winter-rated tires; • keep all windows and lights clear of snow; • give yourself more time to get to your destination in foul weather; • leave extra space between yourself and the other vehicles. “Let’s all be responsible in keeping our roadways safe this winter.”

Luke Homer’s co-op experience at Ultimate Fitness solidified his decision for college, but it also introduced him to the world of powerlifting. On Oct. 31, Homer, who is from the Arnprior area, went to Hamilton for the Ontario
Powerlifting competition. He placed third in his weight class out of the entire province. It’s an impressive feat for the former Arnprior District High School student who was known for his love for running when in school. “(Ultimate Fitness co-owner) Paul Vaillancourt had given

Vaillancourt rattled off thoughts about Homer, calling him impressive, responsible and someone with a rather good work ethic. “Luke is special,” said Vaillancourt. “He’s a very good athlete and very explosive, he could run and do front flips. “In powerlifting he has excelled in a very short time. He is someone to keep an eye on.” Homer graduated from ADHS in 2014. Presently, he is attending Canadore College in North Bay taking the strength and sports conditioning course. In Hamilton at the Ontario championships, Homer was part of the 66-kg or 146-lb. weight class. He competed with in squat, bench and deadlift. There were three attempts and the highest total was taken.
That number is added to the other efforts to get the final result. “The class (number) is the maximum to weigh,” said Homer. “They weigh you two hours before the competition and then you are good to go with eating and warming up.” Home had 217.5 kg (480 lb.) in squat, 105 kg (241 lb.) in bench and 210 kg (462 lb.) in deadlift. “It was fun,” said Homer. “(My goal) was to do 500-pound squat, but I came close. It was a neat experience and an exciting atmosphere.” For reaching the podium, Homer will get to head to Regina in February to compete in the Nationals. “I have never been a plane or even really out

Packers’ new coaches still looking for first win Scott Campbell
scottcampbell@metroland.com
The firing of the entire Arnpior Packers coaching staff only stuck for a couple days. The initial news from general manager Brent Sylvester and owner Marco Scapillati was Packers coach Bill Griese and his as-
sistants Glenn Arthur and Barry Cape were all relieved of their duties on Nov.23. Sylvester made a call to revert part of that decision. An announcement on Nov. 25 appointed Cape as the team’s interim head coach. Newcomers Dave Galasso and Brent Carty are to be the assistants for the Eastern Ontario Tier 2 Junior A hockey club

Debt
A bi-weekly guide on how to manage debt
At Doyle Salewski, we help people just like you every day.
Q: Perhaps you’ve attended seminars and listened to financial advisers or read columns, books or magazine articles on budgeting. Somewhere along the line, the gurus will usually say that knowing where your money goes is the best way to stay on track and not overspend. Follow the bouncing ball. Track your expenses. Set limits. Are they right or wrong?
A: They are absolutely correct. Whether you are an employee, running a business or you are Canada’s Minister of Finance, you need to know where the money goes. Otherwise, it’s a free for all. Not tracking your expenses will very likely lead you to a point where you’re carrying too much debt. And you won’t know how you got there. Okay, so that’s the easy part. You know WHAT you should be doing. Now HOW do you get there if you have no experience and are genuinely intimidated by numbers? If you’ve never used a budget before, the idea of setting one up can be a little overwhelming…especially if you’re already feeling a financial squeeze. Most people freeze up at the very thought, certain that if they try to put a budget in place, it will only confirm what they already know: there isn’t enough money coming in to cover all the money they’re spending. And so they struggle from one payday to the next, hoping they’ll somehow be able to make ends meet for just one more month. Hoping and praying is not the way to go. You need a plan. If this sounds familiar, you’ll be pleased—and probably relieved!—to learn that setting up a budget isn’t nearly as painful (or difficult) as you think. The truth is, having a budget in place can be incredibly freeing. You’ll know exactly how much you need for your living expenses, you’ll be able to plan for upcoming purchases, and you won’t be left scratching your head over how to pay off the debt
you are carrying. Better yet, once you have targets, you can begin paying off some of those debts that are sucking the life out of your finances with all those interest charges—which will free up more money for you. So how do you get started? Google will point you to some useful tools. We find that simpler is always better. For example, most banks have budget templates on their web sites as do we. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada has some great tools on their website as well in both French and English. Try this to get the ball rolling: make a Christmas budget. List everyone you want to buy for and how much you want to spend on each person. Also list any parties you’ll be attending or hosting and itemize the costs. Include clothes and travel costs if any. Once you’ve adjusted the list and set a spending limit, stay within it. You’ll feel a lot better in January when the bills come in. If the budgeting exercise appears daunting and you are carrying more debt that you like, you should enlist the help of a Licensed Trustee and professional credit counselor. If you are burdened with debt stress, asking for sound advice is a sign of strength and the smart thing to do. Asking sooner rather than later is always better. Call Doyle Salewski today for your free, no obligation consultation. You’ll be glad you did.
cepted the position and we move forward.” The weekend saw the Packers play two games with the new look behind the bench. The team didn’t start out well in the first game Friday at home versus Metcalfe, as the Jets scored two goals within the first five minutes. However, it did get better. Dallas Farr managed to get the Packers on the board by the end of the period. After Metcalfe restored the two-goal cushion, Chris King tallied in the third period to pull Arnprior to within one goal again. However, an empty-netter by Metcalfe’s Jordan Malette sealed the win, 4-2 for his team. Sunday’s game saw the Packers take a trip to Athens to play the Aeros. Cris Hearty and Brayden Hearty were the Arnprior goal scorers in a 3-2 loss that pulled Athens to within one point of the fourth-place Packers. Patrick McGrath, Andrew Ryan, Chris King and Bailey Hein picked up helpers for Arnprior. Even though it’s been a losing start for the team with the shift in coaches, Sylvester sees positives. “The results in the standings have not been there, but the effort has been,” he said. “The staff only had one practice with the players (as of press time.)” The Packers (24 points) have slipped out of a guaranteed playoff position and into a wild-card spot. There is just one point different between the Westport Rideaus in third place (25 points) and the Aeros in fifth (23 points). It will be a home stand this weekend for the Packers with the Clarence Beavers coming to town this Friday, Dec. 4 for a 7:30 p.m. game, followed by an afternoon bout with Westport on Sunday (2:30 p.m.) at the Nick Smith Centre. TRADE With wolves
Left winger Cris Hearty and centre Bailey Hein are new to the Packers. Arnprior made a trade on Nov. 23 with the Renfrew Timberwolves. In return for Hearty and Hein, the Timberwolves got wingers Corey Chaplin and Zack Elliott.

Spartacat comes to A.J to reward readers
JoAnn Pecaskie’s Grade 4 class at A.J Charbonneau received a special guest on Nov. 24. Spartacat, the Ottawa Senators mascot, came ready for a visit and a pizza party. The 18 students did some work to deserve the prize. The Sens@School program encourages students to read for pleasure and not just as a requirement. The A.J. Charbonneau class won for October. Students totalled 200 minutes of independent reading and read 163 books for the month – including novel studies, class novels, read-alouds and library books. In addition to the visit by Spartacat, who signed plenty of autographs, each student received two tickets to the Sens game, a win against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Nov. 19.

Extra effort to make Santa parade successful appreciated Arnprior Legion
Ho, Ho, Ho, December is here, Santa has been in town checking everyone out to see who’s been bad and good. Of course in Arnprior, that didn’t take long. Nobody is bad in this town! Last I checked on What’s Happening, we were getting ready for the Santa Parade. Now it’s over. What a great job though! Never ceases to amaze me how everything comes together so well at the last moment. There were just over 40 floats, lots of lights and the music was great. Everyone commented on what a difference it makes to have music. So thanks folks for that extra effort. Just the awards left to present on Friday, Dec. 4 at the Legion. Many thanks to all who participated in the parade in so many ways, and to the many volunteers. Your great efforts are appreciated by all. Here comes Christmas! Be sure to check the What’s Happening page for our changes. No hamburgers on Friday, Dec. 25. Don’t know why. Must be someone out there that would rather have a hamburger than turkey eh? No breakfast either on Saturday, Dec. 26, Boxing Day. I know it’s sad, but we all have to go spend our Christmas presents. After so many delays and other unplanned repairs, replacements and expenses, the parking lot is paved. We realize there’s no parking spots indicated by lines yet, but they are coming, maybe not until spring if we get a bunch of snow, but please
watch where and how you park. Try to be considerate. Don’t take up more than one spot. There’s been some problems lately where some vehicles are so badly parked it looks like they’ve just been abandoned. There are never enough parking spaces, but it’s really upsetting when someone takes up two and sometimes even three spots. Just a heads up: New Year Levee. Doors open at 1300 hours (1 p.m.) in the hall. There will be some of the usual liquid refreshments, the bar will be open for those who don’t drink ‘milk’, and also a nice light lunch. A few honours and presentations will be made. Be sure to join us and support the people who make things happen at the local Legion. It’s all for you. January will soon be with us and let’s hope it brings a good Canadian winter for all those folks who like the winter sports. Folks are working on the new year entertainment and looking for some input. Saturday’s entertainment in the lounge twice a month is very popular. First up this month on Dec 5 is The Circle, very popular with the crowds. We’re always looking to do a little something bigger and special in the back hall. If you’ve got an idea, let us know. Leave your suggestion at the bar or speak to one of the committee members and they will pass it on to the entertainment chair. Would you like just entertainment or a theme dance – ‘60s, ’70s, ’80s, country, square dance? Maybe a little ballet? Keep smiling, be happy and until next time, be safe!

New pastor joins Elgin Street Baptist congregation Scott Campbell
scottcampbell@metroland.com
It’s been three years since Elgin Street Baptist church has had a full-time pastor to conduct a service. There have been plenty of guest-speakers over that time, but since the beginning of November, Pastor Eric Green has stepped up to the pulpit on a steady basis. Green is not only new to the church but also to the Town of Arnprior. “I love it here so far,” he said. “I’m use to the smalltown feel with one traffic light. Obviously, here is big-
ger.” Green grew up in Dresden (between Chatham and Sarnia) - population about 2,700 by his estimate. He attended Tyndale University College and Seminary in Toronto. Going to Tyndale was something he decided at 18 he should do, feeling the pull towards the ministry. He is musical, enjoying the chance to sing and play guitar. Like a lot of Canadians, he is a fan of hockey, and appropriately given his new position cheers on the Ottawa Senators, although there may be some debate among the church’s congregation about his choice of favourite team.
There has been a noticeable increase in those attending Sunday service since Green has taken the post. At his first service there were about 25 people, but one of the more recent Sundays, he said it was close to 55. Green had spotted an ad for the Arnprior church’s placement online and was asked for an interview but also to conduct a service. The people spoke, voting 100 per cent for him to stay. Obviously, they were very pleased in their first impression of him. Although Green is still
learning the ropes at the church and in town, his goal is to have Elgin Street Baptist become more actively involved within the community. The church has started a series of Christmas services to celebrate the coming of Jesus. On Dec. 6 is Peace of Christ, Dec. 13 Joy of Christ and Dec. 20 Love of Christ. The church’s Christmas Eve Service is Dec. 24 at 7 p.m. A new service is being implemented on Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. It is called a Comfort SCOTT CAMPBELL/METROLAND service, designed for those Pastor Eric Green is the new face behind the pulpit at the Elgin Street who have lost ones. So many things of MOM I miss Her gentle hug and tender kiss I still can feel her warm embrace And yet picture her loving face. Although there’s sadness, this I know She’s waiting there, her face aglow. I close my eyes and I can see Her arms still open wide for me. I Love And Miss You Mom. Who passed away 1 year ago – December 4, 2014 December comes with deep regret, It brings back days, we’ll never forget Life is but a stopping place, A pause in what’s to be, A resting place along the road, To sweet eternity. We all have different journeys, Different paths along the way, We are all meant to learn some things, But never meant to stay. It broke our hearts to lose you Chris How we miss your smiling face, But you left us to remember None on earth can take your place. Love Always, Mom, your loving wife Marie, Sue, Heather and Donna

In a country graveyard Where the gentle breezes blow Lay the ones we loved so dearly, Life goes on without you But it will never be the same. Dad, we lost you 25 years ago But now that Mom is with you We can only believe That God is with you both And together you are at peace. They say time heals all sorrow And helps us to forget But time has only proven How much we miss you both yet. Forever loved and missed every day, Marie & Stuart, Jim & Alice, Ernie & Kate and Gary & Sandra And Families

Community gardens at Galilee – Memories, connection and mission Dorothy Allemang Galilee Centre
There are numerous committed people who volunteer their time and efforts to create an oasis of peace, care and comfort at the Galilee Centre in Arnprior. Galilee is situated next to an old growth forest overlooking the Ottawa River, surrounded by tall pines, oaks and other deciduous trees and bushes. The retreat and renewal centre is a spiritual oasis away from people’s busy lives. One such volunteer at Galilee is Bill Mulvilhill, a school teacher of 33 years now retired who sat on Galilee’s board

of directors for three years, cuts down trees, cleans up brush and manages the community gardens. Mulvilhill has been an avid gardener all his life and in his younger years took care of the vegetable gardens along with his dad, Raymond, for the residing priests, brothers and nuns. Over 60 years ago he recalls that Galilee farmed pigs, chickens, hay and pheasants for the Oblates and included a pond for fishing. Where the community gardens are now situated, once stood a barn which housed the pheasants and other animals. When the roof started collapsing, the building was torn down in the l980s. The community then used it as a hockey and skating rink. Mulvilhill recalls when tilling up the garden plots over 10 years ago, finding a hockey puck engraved and dated. There are 29 people who have various sized plots at the community gardens. The cost of each plot is $25, which goes towards maintaining the centre. There is a waiting list of people requesting a plot in this oasis of community connections. Everyone has their own space to maintain growing grapes, herbs, fruit trees, flowers and vegetables. People of all ages from 81 to early 30s bring their own creations and artistic abilities to the garden plots. “It is a community where people come together.” Everyone helps each other out with watering, sharing stories and produce. Mulvilhill works the biggest plot, over

He gives away most of his produce to family, friends, seniors and The Fountain or anyone who walks by. A sign engraved ‘Gadin of Weedin’ marks
his plot. The soil was originally pure sand, so Bill has composted leaves and other plant debris over the years so that the land is now a beautiful, sandy, rich humus soil. The Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors At Home Program has its own separate garden plot behind one of the buildings. There are 10 plots and a waiting list for next year. They grow mostly vegetables for their own use and marigolds to keep the bugs away. When not tending their gardens, the seniors can be seen relaxing under the trees sharing stories and community events. The hundreds of people who visit Galilee each year for a spiritual retreat, a healing or hospitality event are very appreciative of the beauty, quietness and integration with nature that the Galilee gardens offer. Galilee provides hospitality, retreats, business conferences and accommodation services so any individual, group or family can escape the busyness of everyday life. We encourage everyone to participate in one of our programs or trademark hospitality events. We are truly a welcoming, multi-faith holistic spiritual life centre with walking paths, a private beach, space for gatherings and group hosting services. We are sponsored by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, Lacombe Province. To learn more about Galilee Centre’s programs and events, please visit our website at www.galileecentre.com and our Facebook page.

Santa Claus is coming to Pakehham and Almonte. Santa is visiting Mississippi Mills for the entire weekend, as he’ll be attending Light Up the Night this Friday, Dec. 4, the Pakenham Santa Claus parade on Saturday, Dec. 5 and the Almonte Santa Claus parade Sunday, Dec. 6. “It’s a full weekend of Christmas,” said Tiffany MacLaren, the municipality’s community cultural and economic co-ordinator. “We like to offer both so people can choose which parade they want to go to,” MacLaren said. “Of course, they can go to both if they want.” The theme for this year’s parades is ‘Beloved Christmas Tales and Stories’. MacLaren said the idea is wide open to interpretation: floats can centre around a Christmas carol, a story or even about reading in general and can include a vast array of characters from Frosty to Rudolph. MacLaren remindS people to be safe during the parades and stresses there is to be no throwing candy from floats.
PAKENHAM PARADE
The Pakenham Santa Claus parade will take place at 1 p.m., starting at the Stewart Community Centre, heading down County Road 29 before looping back. Guests are invited to line up along the highway or one of the side streets for a prime view of participating floats. Last year’s parade saw more than 50 entries, and MacLaren said they expect similar attendance this year. Afterwards, guests are invited back to the Stewart Community Centre for free family skating and a visit with Santa himself. A free snack of hot dogs and hot chocolate provided by Greater Ottawa Realty will also be available. While there are no prizes this year for participants in the Pakenham parade, MacLaren said that they’ll be hosting a draw for Christmas wreaths donated by Cedar Hill Christmas Tree Farm, open to everyone. Anyone wishing to participate in the Pakenham parade can meet at the Stewart Community Centre 45 minutes before the parade starts to line up. No registration is necessary.

Angel Tree ‘For the Love of a Senior’ keeps giving Liz Wall
Seniors at Home
An Angel Tree ‘For the Love of a Senior’ has been making a difference for local seniors and those with special needs for the past three years. The community support service agency, Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home (ABMSH), has made and will continue to make a difference for individuals during their time of need with their annual Angel Tree program. The ‘need’ over the past three For more information on the Angel years has included things such as proving a hot meal, transportation Tree, visit www.cssagency.ca.
to a much needed medical appointment, putting food on the table with a trip to the grocery store, assisting with a move that may have been created by events out of their control, chores around the home for one who can no longer do on their own, and so much more. The ‘needs’ may be taken for granted by many, but for the elderly and those with special conditions they can be vital to their well-being. “The goal of the Angel Tree program is to provide financial need to a senior or those individuals who have special needs, not matter their age,” said ABMSH executive director
Dennis Harrington, explaining that all monies raised by the Angel Tree program are kept separate from all other fundraising programs offered by Seniors at Home. Harrington points out that when a staff member of ABMSH presents a request for financial assistant for an individual the process beings. “It is a great feeling knowing, that with the community’s support, we are able to help that person. We feel like angels ourselves.” Folks wishing to participate in the Senior Angel Tree program can pick up an ‘Angel’ at one of our four locations: Arnprior Rona, St. Andrew’s

Financial advisor Gabriel Leclerc notes it’s been a busy first year as the office as “done a fair bit to get our name out in the community.” The office sponsored the drinks for a fundraiser for St Joseph’s Catholic School in Arnprior. It picked up the 19-year tradition of Marlene McRoberts to sponsor ladies’ night at the Madawaska Golf Course and have started the same for the men’s night as well. The office has started running regular estate planning seminars at Island View Retirement Suites in partnership of Bradley Samuels from Tierney Stauffer and will continue to expand with retirement seminars. The first anniversary/Christmas open house will run from 2 to 6 p.m. at the office at Ste. 103 236 Madawaska Blvd. next to Rona.

Herman’s pattern of euchre play remained steady ing held, of course, would have giant pots of tea simmering on the back of the cook stove by the time the neighbours started to arrive. Old Herman never brought as much as a pickle. Of course, being a bachelor, he wasn’t much of a cook anyway, and according to my sister Audrey, he wasn’t the cleanest man on the planet either. So it was probably a blessing he only came for the cards and lunch, and let everyone else worry about the food. He arrived in his old battered buggy, or a one-seater cutter, depending on the weather, and his nag of a horse, wasn’t in much better shape either. He drove her right up to the back door, tossed the reins over whatever happened to be handy, and the horse never moved as much of a muscle all the time Old Herman was in the house playing cards. For some reason, he was pretty lucky at euchre. Emerson said he wasn’t above cheating a bit if nec-

essary, but no one could catch him at it. Of course, no money changed hands. If that had been the case, someone would no doubt have kept a closer eye on old Herman. And how he loved to pound the table. Especially if he euchred someone! He’d bring down his gnarled hand and slap the oil-cloth covered table, and you could hear the kitchen window rattling. Now, if he was euchred himself, that was a different story. He would get up from the table, glare down at his losing hand, snort a bit, wipe his nose on the cuff of his ragged shirt, and head for the back door.

There was always someone else ready to take his place, and this routine was so commonplace that the card game never missed a beat. But when he came back in, he seemed to change a bit. And each time he left the game, went out, and came back in, the change was more noticeable. His voice got louder, the pounding got heavier, and by the time the evening was coming to a close, old Herman’s eyes were glazed over, and on more than one occasion he missed the chair and landed splat on the floor. This routine was so common, that no one paid the least bit of attention. And it didn’t matter how under the weather old Herman became, he always managed to tuck away a good portion of the lunch. When it was time for everyone to head home, old Herman would loiter around long enough knowing that he would be taking home a good pile of sandwiches and a piece of the slab
cake. The evening wasn’t over until two or three of the men would help old Herman out to the cutter, or the buggy, pile him in, toss the reins onto his lap, and turn the horse in the general direction of the gate. It would be years before I would learn that old Herman kept a bottle of home-brew under the seat and every time he left the house during a card game, it was to take a swig out of it, and as Father would say, “fortify himself for the rest of the evening.” It always amazed me how that old nag of a horse, with Old Herman snoring before it left our yard, would know exactly where home was. Father said the night air would waken the old man enough that he would tumble out of the buggy or cutter and into his hut of a house, saving himself from freezing to death in his own back yard. Because he never came to a bad end, and was always the first to arrive at the next Saturday night house party!

There was nothing old Herman liked more than a good game of euchre. By the time November rolled around, and winter was about to set in, the Saturday night house parties were in full swing. Old Herman couldn’t be happier. How people knew where the party was being held remains a mystery to me to this day. My sister Audrey said Myrtle at Central not only picked the farm, but would call everyone on the line to invite them, sometimes forgetting to tell the hosting farmer all about it. At any rate, by this time of year, just about every Saturday night, there was a house party at Northcote, and old Herman was usually the first one to arrive. It was expected that everyone would chip in to supply the lunch, which never varied. Eleven quart baskets of sandwiches, a jar or two of homemade pickles, and, of course, big slab cakes. The farm where the party was be-

This week’s puzzle answers in next week’s issue
Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, you can be quite generous when you choose to be, but sometimes you can overlook the needs of others. Pay as much attention to others’ needs as possible this week. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Little things influence how others look at you, Taurus, so make sure you get all of your ducks in a row -- especially at work. Focus on some finer details. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 You may not be in a practical mood this week, Gemini. Fortunately for you, there isn’t much of importance that needs to be done, so you are free to let loose a little bit. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 This isn’t a week to take a walk down Memory Lane, Cancer. Focus on the future rather than getting lost in nostalgia. However, let your past guide your actions a bit. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, your calendar is filling up quickly, but you cannot add any days to the calendar. Divide your responsibilities so you can better handle everything on your slate. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Ambivalence will get you nowhere fast, Virgo. It can be difficult to make decisions, but that’s something you have to do this week. Once you do, you can forge ahead.
LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, you are capable of making intelligent, objective decisions. Expect to find yourself with a growing list of new friends who want your advice. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Now is not the time to begin a new project, Scorpio. Rather, keep a low profile and finish up any tasks that you did not get to finish last week. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, it’s difficult to get a good read on any associates or friends, which could impact your plans moving forward. You may need to make a few assumptions and back track later. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, right now all you can think about is your career and your financial future. That’s okay because you’ve been meaning to give more thought to your finances and how to proceed. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, you may feel yourself pulled in two different directions this week. There’s a part of you that is focused on home, and another that knows work beckons. Find a balance. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 It may seem like getting others to open up is a struggle this week. Find a way to communicate as best you can, Pisces.
