The OPP are checking drivers at different locations and times to ensure drivers are sober. Officers will continue with frequent RIDE spot checks during the holiday season when more people are celebrating and adding alcohol to those celebrations. Remember mixing driving with alcohol, drugs, or prescription medication may impair your ability to drive. Arrive alive, drive sober! On Sunday, Dec. 3 at 1 a.m. officers were checking for impaired drivers when a vehicle was stopped and officers investigated a possible criminal offence. Council changes parking lot plans DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Downtown commercial property owners will pay for additional parking spots, but some important changes were made to the plan at a recent council meeting. At the Nov. 27 regular meeting, consultant Gary Scanlon presented a plan to pay for two new parking lots in the downtown core. One costing $230,000, built already, is at the corner of McGonigal and John streets. A location for the second, estimated to cost $185,000, has yet to be determined. No one at the meeting disputed the need for more municipal parking spots, even though the new Kenny Scissons parking lot is underused. Private property owners such as the one kitty corner to it are well used. But the municipality can’t assume those properties will stay vacant. It is estimated of the 400 spots needed, only 158 have been built. Hence the need to fund more lots. The town has opted to charge downtown merchants, as it did to build the public lot behind Shoppers. Municipalities pay a lower interest rate and often obtain grants from higher levels of government. Scanlon’s suggestion to charge owners based on 50 per cent by assessment and 50 per cent by per lot was accepted by council. As was paying it off over 15 years, beginning in 2019. Same with his recommendation that owners who have paid cash-in-lieu receive a credit up to the amount they paid already. However, other suggestions were rejected. It will cost owners more because council opted

Derek Dunn/Metroland

The new Ken Scissons parking lot is underused at the moment, but if the privately owned lot across the street becomes developed more spots will be taken up. to leave churches out of contributing. And vacant lot owners will only begin to pay when they build. But, importantly, council rejected collecting money for a second lot. That will save current owners some money. When the second lot is purchased, perhaps in five years or more, those owners will be charged. “With regards to a second parking lot: we should park it,” Coun. Frank Dugal said during the discussion. Mayor David Reid agreed that parking isn’t a big issue yet, and that getting as close to a payas-you-go system is ideal. “A second lot should not be included here,” he said. Scanlon agreed to recalculate the costs – estimating an additional about $20 per owner – before bringing it back to council, likely for a final vote.

ONTARIO ENERGY BOARD NOTICE TO CUSTOMERS OF ENBRIDGE GAS DISTRIBUTION INC. AND UNION GAS LIMITED

Helen Smith, along with her husband John Smith, published the book You’re Special Too, written by John. Helen displays the book at the West Carleton Legion on Sunday, Dec. 3. The children’s book full of animal poems reinforces the sentiment the child is special too. John will also be on hand at the Arnprior Library on Saturday, Dec. 9 from 10 a.m. to noon for a special book signing. For more information on how to order visit: www. mebwm.com .

Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. and Union Gas Limited have applied for approval to amalgamate to form a single gas distribution, transportation and storage company. Learn more. Have your say. Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. and Union Gas Limited have applied to the Ontario Energy Board to amalgamate to form a single natural gas distribution, transportation and storage company effective January 1, 2019. The amalgamated utility would serve over 3.5 million natural gas customers in Ontario. Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. and Union Gas Limited say that their customers will not pay any costs related to the amalgamation and that if the Ontario Energy Board approves the amalgamation, customers will receive a total benefit of $410 million over a ten-year period. The rates that Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. and Union Gas Limited currently charge customers are set using two separate frameworks that expire at the end of 2018. The Ontario Energy Board would normally review the costs of each of the gas utilities to set new rates starting in 2019. In a separate application, Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. and Union Gas Limited have asked the Ontario Energy Board to defer its full review of their costs for 10 years and have proposed a methodology for setting rates from 2019 to the end of 2028 using a formula. The Ontario Energy Board will review this rate proposal in a separate proceeding. You can review the notice and related documents for that proceeding at www.oeb.ca/EnbridgeUnionRateFramework. THE ONTARIO ENERGY BOARD IS HOLDING A PUBLIC HEARING The OEB will hold a public hearing to consider the application filed by Enbridge Gas and Union Gas. We will question both companies on the case. We will also hear arguments from individuals and from groups that represent the customers of both Enbridge Gas and Union Gas. At the end of this hearing, the OEB will decide whether to approve the application.

OPINION

Connected to your community

No holiday for some Although Christmas is still weeks away, the return of the so-called festive season is far from a joyous occasion for those who are reminded of what they don’t have or what they have lost. It could be coping with the loss of a loved one or struggling with a serious physical or mental health challenge; perhaps it’s financial pressure that can be especially stressful at this time of giving. For whatever reason, Christmas is anything but a celebration. These folks aren’t trying to dampen the enthusiasm of others who are into the festive spirit; it’s simply a case of trying to get through a difficult period in which feelings of despair and isolation could be heightened. A gesture that communicates empathy isn’t going to solve the person’s problem, but it might be appreciated and could, to some extent, ease the anxiety that often accompanies Christmas. Making a call, paying a visit or extending an invitation shows you are thinking of others in their

time of grief or misfortune. If someone appears to be having extreme difficulty coping, show support and encourage him or her to reach out to an agency that is equipped to deal with such a crisis. These scenarios could arise at any time of year and not just during the so-called holiday season, but we know that the Christmas season can be an especially difficult experience for people of all ages and backgrounds. With that in mind, celebrants might want to consider applying the spirit of giving concept to more than just presents. There’s also donating to charity for those of us who have the resources to do so as well as giving of one’s time; show that you are thinking of someone who is alone or who feels alone and is struggling to cope with whatever challenges he or she is facing. Sharing the festive spirit includes being mindful that there are some for whom Christmas does not bring joy.

Council should consider a change to White Lake Road speed limit Reader reaches out after frightening experience To the editor:

On Oct. 26 I wrote you about my Jag being rear ended and subsequently totaled on Oct. 15. Luckily, there were no injuries, which was a blessing. At the time of my letter I asked why the most dangerous part of White Lake Road has a speed limit of 80 km/hour. It is 60 km/hour from White Lake village to Kippen Road

and then it changes to 80 km/ hour. In my opinion, and that of many people I have spoken to, the speed limit should continue to be 60 km/hour until the bottom of White Lake Mountain at Robertson Line Road. I notice in the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide recently an article by Derek Dunn relating to the number of collisions on this

road. Perhaps when this subject is looked at by the township council they could consider changing the speed limit on the most dangerous part of White Lake Road that I have mentioned. Dolores B. Anderson White Lake

MP encourages Canadians to speak out Cheryl Gallant, Member of Parliament for RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke, invites constituents to participate in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. “The recent, high profile murders of Anastasia Kuzyk, Nathalie Warmerdam, and Carol Culleton shine a light on the immediate need for activism against gender-based violence,” said Gallant. “Gender-based violence has devastating impacts on individuals, families and communities. The effects of such violence can be longlasting and profoundly affect many aspects of a person’s life.”

Starting Dec. 4 for 16 days, until Dec. 10, during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Gallant is asking everyone to take concrete steps to question, callout, and speak up against acts of gender-based violence. “We all have a role to play in preventing and addressing gender-based violence. Achieving real progress means joining forces with our partners in the community to co-ordinate and multiply our efforts. Everyday sexism and misogyny contribute to violence, with gender-based violence growing out of a culture that devalues women

Teachers TAP into Arnprior child poverty solution DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

News that Arnprior has the highest child poverty rate in Renfrew county didn’t sit well with teachers in town. A group calling itself TAP (Teachers Against Poverty) has organized a dinner and dance with local performers for this weekend to raise funds. The money will be used at schools, both public and Catholic, where committees will identify needs of specific students. About 30 per cent of Arnprior’s children live in poverty, according to a report by the Child Poverty Action Network (CPAN). “We see the need every day in our classrooms. Not a lot of people know this, but you’d be surprised at how often teachers clothe kids and schools feed lunch,” said Dana Smith-Hisko, lead organizer. “The welfare of kids in town has always been important to me, so when I saw that child poverty story in the paper I contacted a few different elementary schools. “And now it’s huge. It goes to show how caring everybody is in town.” She noted that the event isn’t sanctioned by the school boards; schools are simply a good way to spot needs and recruit organizers such as Sarah Spratt, Vicki Toner, Nathalie Farmer, Nathalie Spratt, and Ghada FaourMulvihill. Smith-Hisko also added that area merchants quickly agreed to donate auction items and money, along with

giving done to others during the holiday season. “Businesses really stepped up even though this is a small town and they are giving time and time again,” she said. “The people in this town have been really generous.” One hundred of 200 balloons at the event will contain prizes such as Sens tickets or dinner at Brookstreet Hotel. A 50/50 draw will also take place. Most exciting of all, she said, is the live music set to hit the stage, including: High Noon, Glass Town, Danah Krieger, and Bahoo & the Brat. “It’s all local talent and we are really lucky to have them on board,” Smith-Hisko said. Dinner is buffet style and includes chicken masala and Thai shrimp. Plans for paint nights and even moving TAP to another time of year could take place in future. But it is a group Smith-Hisko wants to keep alive, especially with the absence of Families Helping Families (another community-driven charity group that disbanded after last Christmas). TAP Fundraising Dinner & Dance takes place at St. John Chrysostom Parish Hall this Saturday, Dec. 9, with cocktails at 6 p.m., dinner at 7, and dancing at 9. About 16 (two tables of eight) of the 216 tickets for dinner and dance remain. They cost $50 each. The dance alone is open to more and costs $25 per person. Call Smith-Hisko at 613-799-2515 or Nathalie Spratt at 613-852-6193 for dinner tickets. More donations are also welcome.

DENTAL HEALTH T IPS From Arnp rio r Tooth

Dentistry is, as are most aspects of medicine, constantly moving forward. Improvements in equipment and new techniques mean that dentistry is becoming more effective and comfortable in helping patients maintain their oral health. By contributing bi-weekly articles covering a wide range of topics we hope to improve your knowledge of dentistry to help you make more informed and healthy decisions. One aspect of dentistry however has not changed, and that is the requirement for regular examinations, maintenance and timely intervention. Improved imaging and treatment techniques allow dentists to help when problems are easily managed but only if they are given the opportunity. Today’s article will cover one of the basic and important aspects of oral health, the formation of cavities. For cavities to form there are three requirements; a host (tooth), bacteria (present in our mouths), and food (remains of our meals). When the bacteria in our mouths have plentiful and easily processed food (such as sugars) they flourish and produce acids that

Doctor

cause deterioration of the protective outer surfaces of our teeth. Often bacteria grow in areas that are difficult to clean and given enough time they will form a cavity on the surface of the tooth. Their continued growth can then contribute to greater acid production and further damage to other teeth. We can’t delete the host and we can’t stop eating so what can we do? First, we can reduce the bacterial colonies with regular brushing and flossing as well as a daily fluoride rinse. Secondly, we can reduce the amount of sugar we eat and thereby limit the growth of bacteria and the acids they produce (sweet juices often contribute both sugars and acids). In addition, regular professional cleaning can help to identify and provide strategies to deal with those hard to reach areas. Should you have any questions please feel free to contact us. We are always pleased to assist you in your quest for better oral health. We also welcome suggestions for future articles. Seniors and physical activity RICK GWALCHMAI Recreation program co-ordinator

We’ve heard it before. Stay fit, stay healthy. This phrase rings true for everyone regardless of age but it is especially poignant for older adults. The benefits of regular participation in physical activity are many and as trends would indicate, seniors are reaping the reward of longer and healthier lives because of their active lifestyle choices. Adding regular physical activity to one’s routine can provide many benefits. This is especially true for older adult’s mental and physical well-being. Physical activity can help greatly reduce the occurrence of chronic disease and illness such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, obesity, diabetes and premature death to name a few. Additionally, exercise can assist with maintaining functional independence which is very important as we age. Having and maintaining the ability to perform basic activities of daily living

such as dressing, cooking and completing household chores are directly affected if a person’s independence if lost. A healthy lifestyle can positively contribute to increased longevity and independence. Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines recommend that older adults over 65 years of age should work to accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity per week, in sessions of about 10 minutes or more. What is important to know is that physical activity is not limited to joining an exercise class or purchasing a gym membership and hiring a personal trainer. Physical activity is simply engaging in an activity that elevates your heart rate and gets your blood pumping. A brisk walk, a bicycle ride, mowing the lawn or gardening, skiing, skating, swimming, dragon boating, playing pickleball and dancing are just some of the ways for a person to be active. Joining a class or walking group is also a great way to be active while engaging

socially with others. Social interaction is a key benefit of being involved in physical activity as it helps to reduce the occurrence of isolation and depression which is all too common in our aging population. Having worked in municipal recreation in Arnprior for almost 30 years, I have experienced first-hand the positive impact physical activity can have to physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. Alternatively, I have also witnessed the results a sedentary lifestyle can present to someone. For me, the choice is clear. Maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle is something I will continue for as long as I am able. I am proud of the fact that Arnprior has a wealth of easily accessible, affordable and varied programs and services for seniors. We are fortunate to have wonderful recreation facilities, beautiful parks and trails for all to enjoy and a variety of groups and organizations that promote physical activity and sport. Physical activity is a prescription for life. Get out there and enjoy it!

The Greater Arnprior Seniors Council and The Town of Arnprior would like to acknowledge the efforts of local, senior athletes who participated and medaled in the 2017 Renfrew County Senior Games. The games provide an opportunity for men and women 55+ to participate in fun-filled activities of their choice as they strive for both physical and mental well-being. Social interaction at the games is very stimulating with new friendships and good memories created. The council is proud to acknowledge this fine group of local athletes. Above, from left are Arnprior director of recreation Glenn Arthur, Ralph Chown, gold medalist in swimming and bronze medalist in men’s 65+ cycling, Betty O’Shaughnessy, gold medalist in swimming, Pamela Lemay gold medalist in women’s 55+ cycling, Eleanor Hotchkiss gold medalist in golf, Susan and Bob Adkins bronze medalists in carpet bowling and Arnprior recreation program co-ordinator Rick Gwalchmai. Left, Keith Oattes proudly displays his gold medal in men’s 55+ cycling.

Arnprior Curling Club honours Isobel Munro at annual bonspiel SANDRA TAIT Arnprior Curling Club

On Saturday, Nov. 18 the Arnprior Curling Club hosted a curling bonspiel followed by a dinner and dance to recognize the curling achievements of one of their beloved curlers. Isobel Munro. Isobel turned 93 years young this year and the curling club decided to honour her curling achievements by way of a Curling Recognition Bonspiel. In addition to her many curling achievements, Isobel has served her Arnprior community well. Isobel (nee McNab) was born and raised on a farm near Waba. She graduated from nursing at the Ottawa Civic Hospital in 1946 and then came to work at the Arnprior Hospital where she worked for 40 years, first as a staff nurse and then as the director of nursing for 20 years. Isobel has been a member of

the Arnprior Curling Club for 70 years and has proudly represented Arnprior becoming one of the best curlers to come out of the Ottawa Valley. In 1968 she was the vice on a team that won the Ontario Mixed Curling Championships and in 1973 she skipped her Arnprior ladies team consisting of Thelma Lindsay, Geraldine Macklem and Vyvienne Johnston to a win at the Ontario Curling Championships and then to a bronze medal at the Canadian Curling Championships that same year held in Prince Edward Island. Additionally, Isobel has won many other local and Eastern Ontario curling championships over her illustrious 60 years of curling. The bonspiel was full with 10 local teams and six out-of-town clubs competing for the Munro Bowl and cash prizes donated by Isobel. Isobel presented the

“bowl” to the winning team of Arnprior’s Russell and Karen Oatman with their guests Andy and Maureen Broder from the Granite Club, Ottawa. In second place was the Arnprior team of Arie and Mary Jo Wertwyn and Brian and Michelle Girdwood. In third place was the Arnprior team of Steve and Gail Gray with Kristine Dewar and Kurt Phillion. All three winning teams very generously donated their cash earnings back to the club. Isobel delighted the eighty five guests with stories of curling 60 years ago and then everyone enjoyed a wonderful dinner catered by Riley’s Catering. The curling club, including Isobel, wishes to thank its members and the many local community sponsors who so generously Submitted contributed gift certificates and prizes to make this both a won- Isobel Munro with her son Steve Munro, centre back. In loving memory of Walter (Wally) Dodds We his family are so grateful for having had such an amazing man touch our lives, individually and in his own unique way. He has taught us all so many lessons in life and continues to do so even after his passing. Dad taught us the value of family and peace, the importance of hard work and doing things the right way, “right is right and wrong is wrong”. Dad has always shown his family unconditional love and expected nothing in return. We all knew how much he loved us all and sincerely hope he knew how we admired and loved him. We will miss him everyday… however we know he will always be present in our lives, his love simply changing from physical to spiritual. Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard but always near, so loved and so missed… We wish to send a sincere thank you to all of the staff at Orchard View Retirement Residence, Rev. Trudy Hardy, St. James Anglican Church, Almonte General Hospital and the Ottawa Civic Hospital for the care and compassion you gave our Dad. Rev. James Minn, UCW, Keith Peever and the choir from the Grace United Church, Cobden. Special thank you to our Erin (Sadler) for organizing our family supper. Love and thanks to the seven grandchildren Scott, Steven, Katie, Michael, Connor, Caelan, and Abi who honoured their papa as pallbearers, Papa would be so proud of you all. We wish also to thank all our family and dear friends, for your messages of condolences, floral tributes, donations and love. We are blessed and grateful, thank you. The Dodds Family, Laverna, Ron, Bonnie and Lisa Marie

Cecil always had a trick up his sleeve — or in this case his pocket Father never banked around the house with snow until he was sure it was there to last. With no foundation, it was just another way for us to try to keep the blasts of winter outside, and now the snow was packed around the house about two feet high. At the Northcote School, everything had been done to keep the one room as warm as possible, and each of us came bundled up like mummies, most of us having to walk as much as three or four miles to get there. As soon as we got inside, we girls had to take off our overshoes, and the boys their rubber boots, and everything was propped against pieces of firewood, close to the heat, with the tops rolled down. Felt soles were removed and hopefully, everything would be dried out by the time the day ended. It was hard to tell who owned what because we all wore the same footwear. That is, everyone except Marguerite. She had white galoshes, trimmed with white fur, which she assured everyone was pure mink! Cecil said there was no such thing as FOR SALE

a white mink. But Marguerite stuck to her guns. Mink, it was, and that’s all there was to it! And she refused to have her galoshes anywhere near those of the rest of us. She wanted them under her desk. Well, Miss Crosby was having none of that. The white galoshes would be propped against the wood, no questions asked. Marguerite, with a scowl on her face, put them at the very end of the row, and made sure they weren’t touching any other pair. And she didn’t roll down the tops either. She said it would harm the mink! Well, Cecil took on that look he always wore when he was planning FOR SALE

some dastardly deed. It wasn’t exactly a smirk ... more of a grin ... but I knew instantly he was up to no good. He always had his pockets full ... so much so that they bulged out from his overalls, and he carried everything from a couple jackknives to balls of string, a slingshot, and in the summer time he was known to be able to produce a green garter snake on occasion. Goodness knows what he had in his pocket that day, but he kept running his hand over the outside, and you didn’t have to be a genius to see the wheels turning in his head. ing seen by anyone, and that included Miss Crosby. But I never took my eyes off him that day, and yet I didn’t see him move to perform the deed which by the time the day was ended, had the whole school in an uproar, Marguerite in tears, Miss Crosby turning beet red, the boys in hysterics, and we girls climbing on the seats of our desks. Our books were put away, and we were all heading for our boots and galoshes. Marguerite, terrified that someone or something might come in contact with her precious white mink, tore to the blocks of wood, reached inside the first galosh, grabbed what was inside, and her screams could be heard in Arnprior! In her hand was a little cotton bag, the kind we kept our marbles in, and it was moving! She flung it to the other side of the room, it landed on a windowsill, and was still in motion, but whatever was inside couldn’t get out, because the bag was tied tight. there. Miss Crosby marched down to Cecil, hit him a whack with the ruler, and told him to get rid of it. All the boys at the Northcote School were doubled over laughing, and all us girls were frozen on the spot. Instead of taking the very much alive mouse outside, Cecil simply crammed the bag back into his bulging pocket, grabbed his rubber boots, and his book bag, and headed for the door to escape another outburst from Miss Crosby. Two Mile Herman warned Marguerite that he wouldn’t be surprised if there was a dead mouse still inside her galosh. Miss Crosby had to shake it upside down before Marguerite would touch it. That was the end of the white galoshes. The next day Marguerite was in black rubbers with the steel buckles just like the rest of us. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

A Christmas Carol to be performed at Neat Coffee Shop in Burnstown On Dec. 17, 1843, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens was published. It was the most popular holiday book of its day and today it remains one of the best loved holiday tales. The timeless characters of Ebenezer Scrooge, Jacob Marley and Tiny Tim resonate with audiences as well today as they did in 1843. This year, a faithful retelling of the classic will be presented at the Neat Coffee Shop on Friday, Dec. 15 at 8 p.m. The story of A Christmas Carol has been portrayed in countless different ways over the years. Besides the original book, there have been plays, musicals, feature movies and animated features starring everyone from Alastair Sim to Donald Duck. However, in the day of Dickens, it was most likely to be presented as a reading from the book. This is the format that Saskatoon actor John D. Huston recreates in this one man show. “I really didn’t imagine I’d be doing this for a quarter of a century,” says Huston. “Back in 1992 I couldn’t imagine doing anything on a regular basis for a quarter of a century. The

Coincidentally, I was the same age Dickens was when he wrote the Carol. (He didn’t have a beard then either.) I wouldn’t still be doing this if the show hadn’t been so well received almost from the start.”

Well received the show continues to be. Huston has performed the show more than 600 times from coast to coast in venues from churches to theatres to restaurants. Audiences continue to flock to the show and in 2016 Huston was nominated for Best Actor

by Ottawa’s Capitol Critics’ Circle for his run at the Gladstone Theatre. In the summer of 1992, the Arrogant Worms were in their infancy and decided to present their material at some of the Fringe Theatre Festivals in Canada. It was here that lo-

cal resident Mike McCormick met Huston and a friendship was formed. However, though each has seen the other perform a number of times, this performance will mark the first time they have been able to collaborate on a project. “I’ve been fortunate to see John perform A Christmas Carol several times in Ottawa” says McCormick. “In all of those performances, he was joined by ‘Finest Kind’ an Ottawa based folk trio. Given that my trio ‘LMJ’ also perform seasonal favourites from Dickens’ era, I thought this would be a wonderful opportunity to bring John to the area. I was extra fortunate that the Neat Coffee Shop was willing to participate in this venture.” Audiences will not want to miss this opportunity to see one of the most beloved of Christmas stories brought to life by a veteran actor like Huston. Getting to see it in a venue as unique as the Neat Coffee Shop with LMJ providing a musical backdrop will no doubt create a singular holiday experience. Tickets are $15 for this single performance on Dec. 15 and are available from the Neat.
