A “beloved” pet horse that went missing from the Springtown area last month has been found dead, possibly the victim of a hunting mishap. Renfrew OPP Const. Janice Sawbridge reported this

week that a horse reported missing on Nov. 3 between Burnstown and Calabogie had been found dead at a nearby property. The OPP was advised on Friday, Dec. 11 that the body of Peppys Charge it Up (‘Mac’), a sorrel gelding, had been found. After checking out the

Arnprior loses pillar of its business community derek.dunn@metroland.com

For almost every house in town, she knew who built it. She likely was in it. Probably sold it a couple of times over. Arnprior lost a pillar of the community last week. A pioneer who cleared the way for women in business, Edna Mather - wife and mother, friend and competitor – died on Dec. 10 at the age of 95. She passed away peacefully in the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital. Mather opened her own real estate business in 1958 when few women dared entertain the notion. A year later she added insurance to the business, changing the name to Mather Insurance & Real Estate. Plenty of folks at the time predicted the business wouldn’t last six months. It is heading for 60 years soon. Greg Townley has worked at Mather’s for 26 years. He said she was often spotted in her famous three-inch heels, mucking about a construction site. She always drove a big car, dressed impeccably, was tough at times, but always fair. And was a solid judge of character. “She gave a lot of people their start in real estate here in town,” Townley said. “I will miss being able to call her. I used

about her or her business.” Mayor David Reid remembers as a teenager building five houses in Sandy Hook with his father. They turned to Mather when the time came. “She sold them quickly. It started a relationship,” Reid said. “She opened doors for a lot of women in Arnprior. She worked hard and looked after her customers.” Mather is interned at Sand Point Public Cemetery. For more, see her obituary in this week’s edition.

Arnprior Mayor David Reid and Hart store manager Alana Finlay cut the ribbon to mark the reopening of the Hart store in the Arnprior Mall Dec. 9. Also taking part, in the back row from left, are Reeve Walter Stack, Coun. Dan Lynch, Coun. Lynn Grinstead, Coun. Ted Strike, Coun. Frank Dougal, Hart Store operation director Stephane Gibeau, and Hart store manager from Maniwaki Samir Chougi.

Hart keeps promise, reopens Arnprior store in the mall Staff

Take heart, Arnprior. Your Hart store is back. The Hart store, which closed in mid-April during a dispute with the former owner of the Arnprior Shopping Centre, re-opened on Wednesday, Dec. 9. Most of town council showed up to welcome the store back into the Arnprior business community and take part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9:30 a.m.

When the store closed in the spring, company officials maintained they had not shut down by choice, but had been locked out of premises. At that time they said they intended to reopen in Arnprior. With Christmas fast approaching, town staff collaborated with Hart officials and the new owner of the shopping centre to ensure construction and remodelling of the new location was completed quickly in order to meet the tar-

geted opening date of early December. The store is back in part of its former location in the centre of the mall, although its new premises are more compact than the old store. In a news release from the town, the Hart Stores says the company is “proud to be a member of the Arnprior community and are pleased to be able to contribute to its local economy.” Hart added that it is “pleased to once again have the opportunity to

serve local consumers with their brand of family fashions, footwear and home and lifestyle necessities, at great value prices.” The Town of Arnprior has been working closely with the new shopping centre developer, who bought the mall this fall, as the facility undergoes a major re-development. At the centre of the renovations will be a new Canadian Tire store as an anchor for the mall. “Hart Stores re-opening within the Arnprior Shopping Centre is a

positive development for both the shopping centre, as well as Arnprior’s local economy,” said Mayor David Reid. “The Town is committed to working with all stakeholders on this major re-development project, as we recognize the benefits both to the shopping centre and to Arnprior and area residents. “We look forward to more success stories as the shopping centre continues with this re-development process.”

Victim remembered as talented student, athlete her life where the future is so bright for her. She was just minding her own business, and through senseless actions her life was taken. “Her family no longer has her there, so close to Christmas. I just really feel for them.” Glenn Wallace, a teacher and coach at Arnprior District High School, was shocked by the news that Glofcheskie, a former student he remembers as ambitious and magnanimous, is gone. “She was driven to achieve whatever goals she set for herself,” Wallace said. “But most of all was her selflessness. Her leadership shone in her (concern for) welfare for others. She would give back to the community, to ADHS and Guelph, on student councils, on a whole variety of ways.” Glofcheskie was an accomplished golfer who worked for years at Sand Point (formerly Arnprior) Golf Club. A few years ago members raised money to allow her to participate in a Vancouver tournament. She was a member of and captained the University of Guelph Gryphons women’s

golf team and obtained a Master of Science degree. Her academic and athletic results were superb. She returned after graduation to be an assistant coach. She was an organizer and supporter of several good-cause events on campus, including MS Infinity, Exercise in Medicine, and the HK5K charity run. According to her golf coach, Brandon McLeod, she had recently been offered a golf biomechanics research position at the prestigious IMG Academy in Florida, continuing the work that she pioneered at the University of Guelph. He called her the university golf team’s leader: she was captain for three of five years. McLeod conducted several of media interviews Monday to talk about Glofcheskie, and made a list of her attributes to refer to. “Warm, caring, thoughtful, brilliant, fun-loving, great spirit, hard worker, diligent, punctual, detail-oriented,” he read from the list. It jumped the curb, landed on the sidewalk and struck the woman. The vehicle knocked down a power pole, flipped on its roof and came to a stop at London Road. He is charged with break, enter and theft; possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000; criminal negligence causing death; dangerous driving causing death; flight from police causing death; and breach of probation. “We deal with many tragedies as a police service and as a community,” said Guelph Police Chief Jeff DeRuyter, who has a 24-year-old daughter. “A tragedy is a tragedy, but the circumstances of this really do pull at our heartstrings,” he said. “You have a 24-year-old at the stage of

Arnprior Chronicle-Guide - Thursday, December 17, 2015 5

It was an incident that shocked and horrified many people in Arnprior and well beyond. A man ran over his wife – Pamela Hobbs-Mimnagh - on Oct. 2, 2014, killing her in broad daylight along Charles Street near one of the town’s busiest arteries. He was placed in handcuffs on scene and later charged with dangerous driving causing death. Clive Mimnagh’s charges were later reduced to dangerous operation of a vehicle. He eventually pled guilty in Pembroke court to careless driving. Mimnagh, who made bail soon after his arrest, received a $2,500 fine, plus $5 for handling and a licence suspension for one year, along with a driving prohibition for one year. Again the case sparked public puzzlement and outrage. How could someone’s life be worth nothing more than $2,500?

Shouldn’t a woman’s violent death deserve substantial jail time? Metroland Media has obtained a transcript of the court proceedings from last June 11 that explains the reasons for the sentence. The incident was deemed a “tragedy” according to both the prosecutor and defence counsel. Crown prosecutor Terri James and defence lawyer Don Sullivan entered a joint submission, meaning they agreed on essential points and didn’t contradict each other’s comments. James told judge R.G. Selkirk said Pamela was likely an alcoholic, and that the couple (married for 30 years) likely had mental health issues. The couple were overheard fighting throughout the day at her 14 Charles St. apartment. When Clive left the home and got into his car, she – with a significant amount of alcohol in her system - followed. “She, and I’ll use the word ‘fell’, because that’s probably as close as we can get it in terms of the proof, from the side

On a more personal note, Vicky and I became grandparents once again on December 10th when our daughter Emily, and her husband Tom, welcomed a baby boy into the world and a brother for his sister, Adelaide. Leopold Gianni Michele Colucci made a big statement weighing in at 10 pounds 12 ounces and measuring 22inches long. We haven’t seen him yet because he was born in the Northwest Territories. However, because of modern technology we have been treated to numerous photos and videos of him saying hello (in his own way) to Grandma and Grandpa. I have often said that the birth of a child is the Lord’s way of saying he has not given up on us. We thank him for this gift. In a few days we who are Christians will be celebrating another birth: the birth of our savour, Jesus Christ. I hope that this Christmas brings peace, joy, and happiness to all—Christians and nonChristians. I hope everyone gets time to spend with friends and family, enjoying each other’s fellowship and having the opportunity to relax. From our house to yours, please accept our best wishes for a blessed and Merry Christmas, and the very, very best in 2016. 1217.R0013607926

On a positive note, the recent agreement between Ontario and Bruce Power—to enable the refurbishment of the remaining six reactors at Bruce—certainly appears to be a good one. Ontario gets 60 percent of its power from nuclear, and about half of that comes from Bruce Power. The refurbishment agreement ensures we will have a stable supply of reliable, emission-free power for the next 60 years. Investing in nuclear, which has proven to be the workhorse of our system, makes a whole lot more sense than some of the Liberal’s schemes such as building more large-scale wind farms that are inherently unreliable because we have no control over when the wind blows.

of the vehicle,” James said. “Clive Mimnagh’s truck went over her body. She was unconscious at that point. He stopped his vehicle. He remained at the scene.” There were no eye witnesses. Pamela was taken to Arnprior District Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead. OPP heard Clive say at the time and days later, “She’s gone and it’s my fault.” James explained that the line could be interpreted as responsibility without culpability. She said Pamela either fell or slipped down the side of the truck. “We are not able to say conclusively one way or the other as to where Ms. Mimnagh was when the truck started in motion,” James said, “whether she was actually physically contacting the truck, whether she was moving towards it, whether she was already there or whether she wasn’t there yet when it started to move which is an important factor.”

She also indicated that over the past five years we have exported power to neighbouring jurisdictions and managed to lose $3.1 billion in those transactions. The full Auditor’s report can be viewed at: http://www.auditor.on.ca/en/reports_en.htm

The deals they’ve signed, as I have said, cost $9.2 billion more under the system the Liberals signed than the one that existed before they brought in their Green Energy Act. The total cost is staggering: the Auditor states that ratepayers have already paid $37 billion in Global Adjustment. Moreover, electricity consumers will pay a further $133 billion over the next 17 years. As I have indicated in the past, the Global Adjustment is essentially the difference between the actual cost of power and what the Liberal government is willing to pay for it. Remember that additional cost is passed on to you.

December 2015 The Legislature rose for the Christmas recess last Thursday, December 10th. Other than Committees, it will not sit again until February 16th. The last major piece of business in the Legislature was the annual Auditor General’s Report which turned out to be a 773 page indictment of how the Liberals have managed the affairs of the province. It touched on a number of topics, but the area of the biggest cost and concern (according to the Auditor) was their mismanagement of the energy system. According to Auditor Bonnie Lysyk, the Liberals renewable energy programs have cost you $9.2 billion more than they should have. That is because of the sweetheart deals they have signed with Liberal-friendly developers.

Court transcript reveals ‘tragic’ death of woman hit by husband’s truck

Family misses their sister, daughter dearly, court told “I would think, for a criminal charge, but on a lesser level than would be relevant to the issue of the careless driving, said James. There was “some indication of a conversation through the passenger window. There is no proof of excessive acceleration or speed. The maximum speed would have been 29 kilometres per hour. And no evidence of hard braking. “We cannot say whether Ms. Mimnagh was right at the vehicle when he pulled away.

Clive, 68 this month, is guilty of careless driving because he knew his wife had been drinking and the emotional circumstances. Sullivan said Pamela threw hot coffee at Clive that day; he was then hit; and when he left the home a beer bottle was thrown at him. It smashed on the sidewalk. “Pamela came running out to the truck, yelling at him and he pulled out from the curb to leave and he heard a noise, Sullivan said. “He thought something had been thrown at his truck. From about 35 feet away he got out of

truck and ran back to her. He called 9-1-1, and was with her when police arrived. “It obviously is a nightmare for both families since that moment,â€? Sullivan said. “The resolution that has been worked out and discussed with your honour is a balanced one ‌ not to forget but merely to get used to living with the tragedy and everybody understands that it was a tragedy.â€? Clive did not speak to the court. Victim impact statements by Pamela’s family were read by Penny Johnston of Constance Bay. They describe the youngest

I cry a long day in thinking of the way my beautiful sister died. I miss her dearly. This senseless tragedy has left our family with several impacts.

OPINION

Connected to your community

Support your local merchants As you’re wrapping up your Christmas shopping, spare a thought, and a dollar or two, for your local merchants. They are your neighbours struggling to eke out a living in their modest hometown businesses. It’s not easy being an independent businessman in a small town these days. It’s difficult competing against the mass advertising and glitzy displays put on by their urban competition. And after all, during the lead-up to the holiday season, who doesn’t like a day out to enjoy the excitement and variety found in the big city. And nowadays there’s the added competition from the surging online-based business sector allowing customers to shop from the comfort of their armchairs. However, your hometown merchants deserve patronage too. Don’t forget it is they who help you pay your municipal taxes. It’s the local shopkeepers who sponsor your child’s sports team, supports the I choose RVH campaign that funds crucial health care equipment, and provides prizes for fundraising raffles and contests aiding a variety of local causes. There are not many days when small businesses don’t receive a request or two or more

to support a community campaign of some sort. A generous public ensures that schools, hospitals, youth groups, sports teams, heritage organizations and a myriad of other offerings that make this area a great place to live are able to acquire the extras that allows them to continue to serve their community so well. That support is especially important for the most vulnerable in our community. This time of year most are able to share in the joy and largesse of Christmas because the public rallies around a number of causes from the food bank and Seniors at Home to the Family and Children’s Services’ angel program and the Salvation Army. An important part of that support comes from the local business community. So when you are finishing up your holiday shopping, and when you are out after Christmas taking advantage of Boxing day (week) sales and spending any monetary Christmas gifts you were lucky enough to receive, stop by your local businesses. Close out 2015 by giving the gift of patronage to your hometown retailers who contribute so much to your community year-round.

Gillies Grove planning will include public meeting confusion this may have caused. NCC is in the process of updating our property management plan for the Gillies Grove Nature Reserve, a process we undertake every five years for each property we own. We are currently in the early stages of this process and, as a preliminary step, we often consult our partners and local organizations. In the case of Gillies Grove, this included partner organizations such as the Friends of

Gillies Grove, the Town of Arnprior, the Ontario Heritage Trust and the Galilee Centre. NCC recognizes the importance of local communities as stakeholders. While every property and plan is different, public consultation is often a part of the property management planning process. In this case, the local community forms the backbone of the Grove. It was, after all, the local community that rallied together in an impressive manner to

Let’s get the facts right on OMB quarry hearing To the Editor: The Ontario Municipal Board Hearing for the whole month of March was undoubtedly the most important the Township of McNab-Braeside will ever be involved in. Why? Because the stakes were very high. The opponent was Miller Group, a multinational company with huge financial resources. And they had a huge team of highly paid experts to achieve their goal of a huge quarry expansion at the expense of neigh-

bours’ land and a permanent asphalt plant. What was at risk? For a start, the quantity and quality of the water for the whole Braeside Ridge. The village of Braeside, Sand Point, Dochart, all the subdivisions and homes in the area. That’s a lot of people! Arguably one of the best hydrogeologists in Ontario, paid entirely by FACT-MB, testified that a permanent asphalt plant represented just too great a risk of water contamination. 1217.R0033597298

What does water contaminated by petrochemicals mean in terms of dollars? Probably $40 million for a water filtration plant and another $40 million for infrastructure to get the water to all the residents. Would that affect every member of the Township? Then there’s the certainty of air pollution – certainty because residents have already suffered with a temporary asphalt plant in this quarry. Consider the effect of a permanent asphalt plant spewing cancer-causing chemicals, (well-known), year after year after year. Imagine being a child unable to play outside, affected even inside the home. An atmospheric scientist with an international reputation, paid entirely by FACTMB, testified that the inevitable exposure of these chemicals was too great a risk to the health of people in the region. Don’t forget that Arnprior is downwind of the Braeside Quarry. The Board Chair listened when FACT testified about the court decision they had won against Miller for the adverse effects of that portable asphalt plant. Not only did he listen, but in his decision he stated clearly that this influenced his denial of the permanent plant. Miller wanted to be able to use neighbours’ land as their buffer zone for their Class III heavy industry. A Township bylaw allowed them to do this!

But again an internationally respected structural engineer, a blasting specialist who had worked for the Pentagon, for NATO, for some of the most prestigious organizations south of the border, paid entirely by FACTMB, testified that blasting this close to neighbours would result in damage to their homes. And FACT-MB gave the OMB Chair examples of past blasting accidents in the quarry, including a court conviction. The Chairman listened. Without even getting into increased infrastructure costs to the township from greatly increased truck traffic, or the reduction in tax revenues from huge homes devalued by potential water risk or a permanent asphalt plant emitting chemicals into the air around them, I think you can see the ongoing drain on limited township resources if this hearing had not been won. The Township went into this hearing unprepared. No expert to try to protect our water, none for our air, none to protect our homes from blasting damage. No court decisions against the portable asphalt plant or blasting accidents. FACT-MB paid for all of that. Without FACT-MB, the Township would have paid nearly $200,000 of the taxpayers’ money (their OMB costs), and they would have lost both our money and the decision. So if you want to express your opinion on this expansion, either verbally or in print, please get your facts right. Norma Moore, FACT-MB Inc. McNab-Braeside

will have the best equipment. CT scans are the backbone of Medical Imaging. They give radiologists the critical information needed to diagnose and save lives. CHEO needs a new CT scanner that will transform CHEO’s ability to improve technique and decrease scan time. Pictures of your child’s brain or body can be obtained much faster! These pictures are very accurate and detailed and they allow radiologists to detect small and important changes or concerns.

It will have a tremendous impact on patient care. From babies to teenagers, patients who need these exams must be exposed to radiation in order to find a diagnosis. With the new technologies available, new scanners emit lower radiation doses significantly and are much faster. This means a patient spends less time on the CT table! It can mean a reduced need for anesthesia as well.

PLEASE HELP US PURCHASE THIS REVOLUTIONARY PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY TO HELP CHEO’S PATIENTS, JUST LIKE VIENNA. Have a profound impact on the life of a child!

Edna Ross, with assistance of her brother Allan, conducted the first Pakenham CBC in 1925; her sister Verna joined the ‘Ross-ter’ in 1926. Surprisingly, that wasn’t the first local bird count; Charles Macnamara conducted the Arnprior CBC from 1913 to 1939. In 1970, ‘Pakenham CBC’ was changed to ‘PakenhamArnprior CBC’ to honour the two historic counts that ran concurrently for many years. Recently I’ve been having trouble sleeping. But that’s not because Santa will soon be visiting. My excitement comes from the approach of Boxing Day, and not because I love shopping or because that day, like Christmas, is a holiday. I’m excited because with Boxing Day comes the annual Pakenham-Arnprior Christmas Bird Count. This year’s Count is extra special: it is my 50th consecutive one! Christmas Bird Counts (CBCs) occur throughout North America. Each occurs in an area defined by a 24-km diameter circle, and takes place on a specified day between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5 each year. Volunteers tally all birds seen and heard in areas of the circle to which they are assigned. Most counts occur on weekends because more participants are available then. Bird Counts arose in 1900 in New York as an alternative to an annual Christmas Hunt. Participants in the ‘Hunt’ shot

Legendary muskie fisherman designs new baits Continued from page 12

Arnprior’s Bill Craig can. Called ‘The Craiger’, the bait is designed by Mike Parker of Windsor, Ont. That’s the sort of respect you get when you’ve spent 45 years hunting muskie – the elusive ‘fish of a thousand casts’ – in the Ottawa, Madawaska and other rivers. Craig still holds the live release world record: a whopping 62.25 inches long. He darn near beat it just this past summer on the Ottawa. “It hit the bait, but I didn’t set the hooks into it,” Craig recalled. “It was 70 inchesplus; in three to four feet of water.” He is none too happy about it; dismissing the common ‘It’ll be that much bigger next year.’ He had a 52-incher later that same day, but shook it off the bait. “I didn’t want the second-place prize,” he said. “You’ll never see it again. I had my chance and I blew it.” However, Craig is highly regarded as a muskie-whisperer. If anyone can cut a newbie’s casts down from the dauntingly high 1,000 – it is he. Constantly at launches in his native Arnprior and elsewhere, he has had strangers approach to ask if he has heard of a guy named Bill Craig. “I know him pretty well,” he says with a chuckle. “What do you want to know? So I’ll tell them some good spots.” Now, though, he can offer them even more. Using the right tackle is crucial to catching

North America’s favourite sport fish. Muskies are picky eaters. They want large, realistic prey. Craig and his friend Jeremy Horwath (find them on Facebook under C&H Custom Muskie Baits) have spent hundreds of hours testing and trying out the best baits on the market. They have now designed a couple they are proud to put their names on. Muskie Dawg and Chubby (along with its twin Chugger) are handcrafted with quality materials. Craig says the baits won’t drift to one side or the other when trolling at good speeds, and you’ll never have to modify them in any way or untangle the hooks. “These are absolutely perfect,” he said. “You don’t need to do a thing to them.” It’s difficult to get good quality muskie baits without driving to Sail in downtown Ottawa. They just don’t carry them at the usual stores. That is what prompted C&H to begin their own line. At $32 each, the price is very competitive with generic models. The difference is Craig is putting his reputation behind his baits. Craig has taken a newcomer to town under his wing. Jim Murphy has recently moved up from Halifax, having spent many years fly fishing and going for stripped bass. He has plenty of experience making flies, but when it comes to Ontario lunkers like northern pike and muskie, he’s an admitted newbie. “We moved up to be closer to our grand-

child,” Murphy said. “Great water. Great fishing. From that standpoint, why wouldn’t we retire here.” Murphy’s had some success selling his giant baits on Kijiji. But with a few design modifications from C&H, Murph’s Custom Spinners are ready to hit the market big time. Call him at 613-623-0527 for more.

C&H will host a coming-out party for their new baits on Dec. 16 at Eastside Mario’s in Arnprior. See the baits in action via video and ask the master himself for tips. At nine inches long, these baits eat up a lot of stocking space.

Rural mayors join forces in effort to save taxpayers money Faced with common needs and similar problems, the mayors and reeves of 13 small rural municipalities have joined forces, creating a Rural Mayor’s Forum of Eastern Ontario. McNab-Braeside Mayor Tom Peckett, who has been regularly updating his council on the efforts of the fledgling group, says the members have already laid the groundwork with preliminary discussions about services that could be run more efficiently if municipalities work together to eliminate duplication. The mayors will also act as a lobby group on behalf of rural causes, he added. Among the members of the forum from this area are McNab-

Braeside, Arnprior, Horton and Greater Madawaska. The seeds of the forum originated this summer when Greater Madawaska Mayor Glenda McKay and North Frontenac Mayor Ron Higgins met to discuss shared services, common issues and the need to work together. Within months, that meeting led to the formation of the Rural Mayor’s Forum of Eastern Ontario (RMFEO). Members of the forum – 13 small rural municipalities in Eastern Ontario – have committed to work together to address common issues and identify opportunities for cost reductions, thereby forging a unified voice. Concern was expressed that organizations such as the Associa-

tion of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) focus primarily on urban centres and the advocacy work of the Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) includes much larger municipalities. To date, RMFEO has held two meetings and has crafted mission and vision statements and identified objectives. Its specific mission is to identify opportunities for collaboration to improve operational effectiveness and long-term sustainability, with a vision to work closely with stakeholders to coordinate common goals. Over the coming months a strategy will be put in place to communicate and work with other organizations and government bodies.

The RMFEO is trying to change the fact there has been little collaboration by small rural municipalities. To address this, RMFEO will be working towards the implementation of provincial and federal policies and funding opportunities that speak to the needs and challenges of small rural municipalities in a collaborative and transparent manner. While the seniors levels of government are already working with rural municipalities, RMFEO stresses the rural voice has not been well represented or fully involved in the development and implementation of major federal or provincial policies and funding opportunities. Over the coming months, RM-

Museums seeks funding for new exhibit, full-time employee derek.dunn@metroland.com

The local museum is hoping for a contingency fund from town hall for a new exhibit. Arnprior and District Museum’s presentation at the town’s budget consultation meeting on Dec. 9 included a “one time ask” for $5,400. The money will be used for a 12-week job placement; an interpreter is needed for the new Energy House exhibit. The temporary employee would lead school visits, along with developing and delivering children’s programs related to the exhibit. But depending on public interest and provincial dollars, the money might not be needed. “This funding may not be required as we are forecasting revenue from the exhibit and a possible grant to cover this cost,” said Sara MacKenzie, chairwoman of the museum board. “So it may not be needed in whole or in part.” FULL-TIME JOB?

However, the museum is also asking council to permanently increase funds to the administrative assist position.

That would make the job year-round. “This would be ongoing and provide much-needed continuity and support to the museum, its curator, its volunteers and students,” MacKenize said. The request to fund the job from 36 weeks to 52 would cost about $5,000. Activity and use of the museum is up. The presentation included a recap of the year’s work: Exhibits included Iroquois beadwork, Monarch butterflies, Birds in a Box, and preparation for the opening on Feb. 19 of Arnprior on the World Stage. Summer children’s program was a near sell-out in 2015. The 10th annual Antique Quilt Show took place. New acquisitions included a Gillies Grove tree from Canadian Museum of History; Allison Stein Estate Textiles. The museum was successful at winning various grants this year, including a provincial museum operating, a Department of Canadian Heritage, one from Renfrew county, and another from World Wars Community Commemorative Fund. The museum’s presentation to council was one of several made at a town budget consultation meeting held in council chambers. Dec. 9.

Sponsorship committee to welcome Syrian refugee family to Arnprior and Turkey to ensure the people coming to Canada have been interviewed for security reasons.

A group of Arnprior area residents have formed a committee whose goal to sponsor a refugee family and bring them to live in Arnprior. Their initiative is called ‘Project Arnprior Welcome’. The group has explored the many responsibilities of sponsoring a refugee family, from finding housing and gathering furnishings and clothing to looking into schools, English as a second language programs, health care and transportation. All churches in Arnprior and district have been given the opportunity to participate in Project Arnprior Welcome. All funds raised over the coming months will be managed by Emmanuel Anglican Church, but monies raised will go to supporting the family in their first year in the area. An information meeting held Dec. 7 was attended by about 40 people. Katherine Miller-Gatenby presented information on the history of Syria from where it is expected that many refugees will come. She reiterated the work of the Canadian government working in Jordan, Lebanon

OPP seek public’s help to identify mystery body The OPP have reissued an appeal for the public’s help in identifying a body found in Renfrew County more than 14 years ago. On Sept. 5, 2001, the body of an adult male was discovered at a rest area of a remote cross-country ski trail near Deep River. The OPP Criminal Investigation Branch is asking for help in another effort to identify the man. The man was wearing a blue Eagle Creek Travel Brand nylon knapsack that contained hiking items including a candle, lantern, mini-mag flashlight, water container and matches. Police also located a Levi pocket watch with a

blue face and a built-in compass on the band located in the knapsack. Other items in the bag include: • luggage tag sticker from a Costa Rican domestic airline; • plastic laundry bag from Sutton Place Hotel in Toronto; • matches from the Sheraton Hotel, W Hotels (American chain) and Barclay Hotel in Vancouver; • two protein bars from a GNC store The deceased is described as white, 5’4”, slim build, 130 lb., good dental hygiene, no tattoos or scars and was in good physical health prior to his death. He was wearing Pepe brand blue

jeans (button-fly, size 30), black Leather Clavin Klein belt, Fundamentals medium black t-shirt, Replay Blue Jeans, black small running shoes (fairly worn), black cotton underwear and a silver ring with aqua coloured stone on the pinky finger of his right hand. The man wore eye glasses that are for near-sighted individuals. Information obtained through the investigation leads police to believe that the deceased traveled throughout Canada, specifically western Canada, the U.S. and possibly Costa Rica. Post mortem results indicate the cause of death is not suspicious, as

foul play is not suspected. The Upper Ottawa Valley OPP Crime Unit, under the direction of Detective Inspector Rob Hagerman is continuing the investigation. If anyone has information about the identity of this man, \ contact the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

One fraud involved driveway paving not completed, while another involved a call supposedly from Citizen and Immigration Canada looking for personal information. Two calls were in regards to advertisements online for items for sale looking for

However, Sawbridge pointed out the circumstances of the death are still unknown and not much else can be added until the investigation is completed. Christmas, hopes to open Dec. 19 Kelly Kent kkent@metroland.com

Whether you’re a fan of it or not, it’s safe to say that the warmer weather and lack of snow are quite unusual for this time of year. The lack of snow has been especially challenging for staff at Mount Pakenham, who have been doing everything they can to get their slopes up and running. Despite the unseasonal weather, Julie Clifford-Burns, marketing director, said they hope to open this Saturday, Dec. 19, only a few weeks behind schedule. “This has definitely been a challenging season so far with the weather,” CliffordBurns said, “but we’re hopeful that things will turn around soon.” Usually by this time in the season, Mount Pakenham has had at least a few runs open for a couple of weeks. However, with the unseasonably warm temperatures and absence of natural snow, Clifford-Burns said the team has had a hard time with their snowmaking process so far. Though staff started snowmaking on the slopes in early December, they had only gotten about 15 of their usual 300 hours in when Clifford-Burns spoke to the Canadian Gazette. It needs to be below -2 C in order

for snowmaking to work, and it has only hit that low on a few occasions, usually at night. For now, the snowmaking team is focusing their attention on a selection of runs to make sure they can open some soon. “We’re still optimistic that it will be a good season,” Clifford-Burns said. “We just need Mother Nature to get on our side.” When Mount Pakenham does get up and running, it will have a busy season of lessons and programs planned, said Clifford-Burns. This year, Mount Pakenham will be offering both a Night Owl and a Youth After School program for adults and kids, respectively. These one-hour group lessons will begin in the second week of January and run for eight weeks. Also offered this year is a Parent and Tot program, geared towards parents with children aged three to six. This is a one-hour program where kids can learn to ski alongside their parents. The program runs for five weeks beginning in January. Mount Pakenham also offers rental equipment and other activities like snowshoeing and tubing. For more information on slope conditions, hours of operation or services offered, visit the Mount Pakenham website at www.mountpakenham.com or check their Facebook page for frequent updates.

Packers salvage weekend with upset over Stittsville Scott Campbell

scottcampbell@metroland.com

It was a road weekend for the Arnprior Packers and the result was a win and a loss against the two top teams in their division. The Perth Blue Wings proved why they are the first-place team in the Eastern Ontario Junior Tier II hockey’s Richardson Division with a 9-3 win over the Packers last Friday. “We started out strong(ly) and were up 2-0 early in the game,” said Packers interim head coach Barry Cape. Perth battled back to tie the game by the end of the first. It was the second period where the game fell apart for the Packers. “Unfortunately we were short a number of players and could not keep up with the speed of Perth. They rallied for five straight goals,” said Cape. “We had many defensive mistakes that you just can’t make against a team as good as Perth.” Dallas Farr had two goals and SCOTT CAMPBELL/METROLAND Bailey Hein one goal for the Pack- The Arnprior Packers new coaching staff during a practice last week – from left Tyler ers and Chris King helped out with Charbonneau, Dave Galasso, head coach Barry Cape and Darren Forbes. Sunday’s trip to Stittsville fared out much better despite Arnprior still being short of players. “We had much better effort and more responsible defensively, helped us to a 6-3 win,” said Cape. The game was tied after the first period. It was Arnprior’s turn to dominate the second stanza, but it led to the loss of a few more players. The second was filled with penalties with fighting majors and game misconducts for both teams. “In the third period we played a great defensive game and held on for the win,” said Cape. “Liam Poirier had one of his best MAJOR TOM D/S/H NEUTERED MALE SLY D/S/H NEUTERED MALE SYDNEY D/S/H SPAYED FEMALE 2 YEARS OLD 3 YEARS OLD 2 YEARS OLD games of the year with a three-point night and played a solid two-way game.” This pretty little girl is Betty! The Packers travel to Westport for their third straight road game this Friday, Dec. 18 before returning home to the Nick Smith Centre Sunday, Dec. 20 for their final game before Christmas when they face cellar-dwelling Brockville. The Packers host two games between Christmas and New Year’s, with Athens coming to town Dec. 27 for a 2:30 p.m. game and the suddenly surging Renfrew Timberwolves in town for an 8 p.m. contest Wednesday, Dec. 30.

Her kittens have all found homes and now she would like to as well. Betty is a very friendly, affectionate cat, she enjoys attention. Betty is outgoing, curious and playful. She gets along well with other cats, dogs and children. If you would like to meet this special girl, she is currently at the Renfrew Pet Valu!

December 2015

For Canadians who do not believe in co-incidences, it was no co-incidence the announcement by Trudeau in his Throne Speech that our men and women in the service of our Canadian (soon to be dis-armed) Forces would be facing cutbacks to be a ‘leaner’ force was followed by the appointment of Omar Alghabra as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and a misleading opinion piece by Chretien-era appointee Senator Romeo Dallaire. The message of a ‘leaner’ Canadian military, Trudeau doublespeak for cuts, follows the first Trudeau pronouncement to ‘back away’ from our Western Coalition partners in the fight against international terrorism. Canadian Foreign Policy is taking an extreme shift to the left. Saudi-born Alghabra, former head of the Canadian Arab Federation, has been out-spoken in his support of terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah. Part of the boycott Israel lobby, as the Parliamentary Secretary in charge of consular affairs, Alghabra has a publically undefined role in determining which migrants will be brought to Canada. The indifference by Dallaire for Canadian soldiers to throw away their sandcoloured berets, berets that were earned standing shoulder-to-shoulder with our NATO allies with a lot of precious Canadian blood in the dust of Afghanistan, in exchange for blue berets, should have Canadians even more alarmed. There is an ongoing and serious security threat in the Middle East posed by international terrorism. The threat is not only a threat to innocent victims in that war-torn part of the world. It represents an active threat to international security and stability to our allies and to Canada, as we have seen in Paris and more recently San Bernardino here in North America. The brutal murders of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent and Corporal Nathan Cirillo on Canadian soil means no Canadian is safe. This is why the Canadian Armed Forces must continue to be part of the solution as full, participating members of the international coalition against terrorism. While Dallaire was quick to use misleading figures on the number of Canadians currently serving on UN peacekeeping missions, with the inference our Conservative Government somehow did not believe in peace, Dallaire should have acknowledged the drop in Canadian peacekeepers happened during the Chretien ‘decade of darkness’ years starting in 1996, the last year of the UN Mission in Rwanda. Canada’s UN troop contributions dropped in one year from 2,585 in 1995 to 254 by 1996. Using peacekeeping as an excuse, Canadian soldiers will be ordered to abandon the honour and recognition we earned in Afghanistan. By pulling them back from the international coalition fighting terrorism, it will allow Trudeau to make larger cuts. Cutting our military and abandoning our allies is absolutely the wrong direction for Canada. As your Member of Parliament I will remind the government of its obligation to our NATO partners and its responsibility to protect the freedom, democracy, safety, and security of all Canadians. As your Federal Member of Parliament, I am pleased to represent you on a variety of issues. Whether that issue is promoting agriculture, international trade, Canadian Unity, AECL, CNL, the military or jobs in the working forest, I am here to serve you! There were plenty of nice moves both on and off ice during this year’s Upper Ottawa Valley Aces Day. Held at Renfrew’s Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre on Dec. 12, Aces Day is the AA hockey organization’s annual opportunity for every team to play in the same rink. Comprised of players from across the county, Aces teams from atom

to midget took on teams from Ottawa and surrounding districts. The club produces skilled players who focus on teamwork. It also contributes back to various communities off ice. The minor bantam team is a good example. During Saturday’s festivities in Renfrew, the team donated $200 worth of gifts to a deserving family in the community. The 13-year-old boys were given money at a mall with the expectation they could find a “balance

between wants and needs” for the single mother and four kids. “We have a good opportunity to play hockey for the Aces,” said Connor Peplinskie of Pembroke, “so we should be giving back to the community.” LIFE SKILLS

Coach Cameron Gage of Petawawa said there is more to hockey than winning games. “We’re not only teaching hockey

skills. We’re teaching life skills,” Gage said. Buffie Rathwell of Renfrew County Family and Children’s Services was on had to accept the gifts. Her kids have been through hockey. She knows the bad news stories about overzealous parents and violent players. She also knows the generosity and community leadership that comes from it, too. “I’ve been through it, so I know what happens around hockey,”

Rathwell said. “This is the kind of thing we really appreciate.” Rathwell singled out assistant manager Amanda Dawe of Pembroke for coming up with the idea. “Amanda came to us with the idea, so that was fantastic,” she said. “She said the team tries to pick a different charity every year and this year it was us.” The gifts were left unwrapped so the mother could inspect the suitability.

A: It depends. The only way to know for sure is to first consider the reasons you accumulated the debt. The next step is to take a hard look at how much you make, where you spend your money and itemize all of your assets and debt. If you are not comfortable with doing this ground work, a Licensed Insolvency Trustee can be instrumental in assisting you with the big picture and providing advice. You want to make the right choice for your family so that you can reduce the debt stress and focus on the important things in life. In our line of work, many people call or write in to us because they don’t know where to turn. Many are living through some sort of crisis, whether it’s a health issue, dealing with family related problems, they haven’t paid or filed their taxes or they are carrying too much debt. Many of these situations will result in unplanned expenses, lack of funds to make ends meet and ultimately, too much debt. I’ll be blunt. Taking on more debt is never the answer when you are already juggling too much debt. Robbing Peter to pay Paul is not the way to go. You are only delaying an inevitable financial setback. Speak to a trusted and qualified credit counselor so that you can build a plan, reduce the debt stress and get back on track. A debt consolidation loan is intended to pay off various debts and reduce interest costs so that you have a single monthly payment. The most common scenario is to consolidate a few loans and high interest rate credit card debt. Under the right circumstances, it can be an effective way of making your financial situation more manageable. Whether or not it will work for you, however, depends on a two critical things:

1. Your ability to pay: Depending on how much you owe, a consolidation loan could be a commitment of 5 or more years. You must be able to make the necessary payments until the loan is paid off. More importantly, make sure not only the interest rate but the total interest cost you will pay over the loan term is lower than what you are currently paying. 2. Your willingness to change your spending habits: Debt consolidation isn’t a cure-all. Combining your payments into one won’t make much of a difference to your overall financial picture if you don’t have the skills to better manage your money— and to make sure you don’t run up additional debts in the future. If you think a consolidation loan is the answer, you should seek the advice of a reputable and qualified credit counselor before you sign on the dotted line. You need someone who can help you build and follow a balanced budget, offer tips for cutting spending and help you to rebuild your credit rating. A consumer proposal is another alternative that only a Licensed Insolvency Trustee can offer and should be considered. Once your plan is in place, you should have a positive outlook on your financial situation. Debt consolidation can work for some, but only if you consider all of the alternatives and are willing to put the work into changing how you manage your money. If you are burdened with debt stress, asking for sound advice is a sign of strength and the smart thing to do. Asking sooner rather than later is always better. Grace St. Andrew’s holds community dinner for close to 200 Church group wraps gifts for 88 children Jessica Cunha

jessica.cunha@metroland.com

Santa’s elves were hard at work on Saturday preparing the Christian Education Centre for a community dinner held the following day. For at least 10 years, the congregation of Grace St. Andrew’s United Church has hosted a community dinner for those in need and provided gifts for children under age 12. This year, the dinner was set to host 48 families – 180 people in total, 88 of those children, said organizer Susan Brossington. “The community dinner is the main outreach program of St. Andrew’s,” she said. Brossington begins organizing in October, collecting names, ages and gift-wishes of children in need under age 12. ‘VERY REWARDING’

For at least 10 years now, the congregation has held a full Christmas turkey and ham dinner for those in need, says Brossington. At right, the presents under the tree.

The majority of funds raised for the presents come from the congregation, she said, although this year Coin Mechanical signed up as a corporate sponsor and Giant Tiger donated gifts cards. “It’s very rewarding,” said Brossington, about being able to provide a full turkey and ham dinner, along with gifts, for those in need in the community. “It’s a way we can celebrate Christ’s birth and give back to our community.”

Community mourns sudden loss of Pakenham school teacher He commended the doctors and nurses at the hospital as being “amazing.” Get-well cards from the students had been dropped off at the hospital, and Greg was able to read them as his wife fought a brave battle for her life. “There were some doozies in there,” he said. “She had a love for all of them (her students).” As a parent, he now faces a difficult task of raising his daughter as a single parent – raising a child who will never be able to remember her mother. “I’ve got some big shoes to fill,” he said.

Area educators are mourning the loss of a Lanark County teacher who died this week at the age of 34. Megan E. Kumpula, (nee Laidley) was a core French teacher at Pakenham Public School for the past eight years. She died at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital in Ottawa on Dec. 2, after a short battle with meningitis. Born in Toronto in 1981, she was raised in Perth. After graduating from teacher’s college in Australia, she returned to Perth where she did supply teaching. In 2013, she married Greg Kumpula and their daughter, Jocelyn Elizabeth, was born the following year. She also leaves behind her mother Gail, father David, as well as her brother Spencer and sister Sarah. “She was young and healthy and strong,” Greg said. “(It’s) just devastating.” Her illness progressed quickly. On the evening of Nov. 27, Megan returned to the family’s home in Ottawa’s west end. Not unusually, she was feeling tired after another busy week at school, and she wanted to have a quiet evening in. But when Greg went to check on her a while later, he knew something was not quite right. “You can tell when someone is in distress,” he said. He called 911, and the paramedics arrived within 15 minutes. When they arrived at the

A SCHOOL REMEMBERS

In this undated photo that accompanies the gofundme.com page set up by her friends, the late Pakenham Public School teacher Megan Kumpula (nee Laidley) poses with her daughter, now 14-monthsold. hospital, he admits that he was “relieved” since she was going to get the medical attention she needed. “Then the doctors start with the bad news,” he said. “Within hours of being in the hospital, they knew it was serious … First it’s bad. Then it’s worse. Then it’s hell,” he said. She went into cardiac arrest in the wee hours of Nov. 28, and it became even more of a pitched battle thereafter.

After more than 30 years working in education, the morning of Thursday, Dec. 3 was the hardest day on the job for Kumpula’s boss, principal Dave Balfour at Pakenham Public School. It was “the hardest thing I have ever done,” Balfour said, during a telephone interview on Dec. 7. “I’ve experienced death in the school before, but this was a tragedy.” That was the day he told the students that their beloved core French teacher had died. (He told the teachers and staff the day before, after school had let out for the day.) The school lowered its flag to half-staff and posted it on its Facebook page. “We had no idea what to say,” admitted Balfour. “Our hearts are broken,” read the post. Online and in real life, “the outpouring of support has been fabulous,” said Balfour. “It

speaks to her broad support.” He and other staffers had known that she had been feeling ill, so every child in the school did get well soon cards to send to her – which were dropped off at the hospital before her death. Kumpula had been a teacher at the school for eight years, and this was her first – and, ultimately, only – fulltime posting, following supply teaching assignments. “This is a very small community school and she has been a huge part of the community,” Balfour said. “She worked with every child on a daily basis,” he recalled, teaching every grade from Kindergarten to Grade 6. Kumpula was such a devoted teacher that last year, during her maternity leave, she came back to the school to help out with a Christmas sale. “She was one of the most giving teachers of her time,” said Balfour. She was famed for her baking and, in a bittersweet twist, as she lay in hospital on Dec. 5, her students were selling her baked goods and earrings at the school sale. During her time at the school, she helped co-ordinate the school’s Terry Fox Run and the annual Jump Rope for Heart event. In fact, she was instrumental in bringing Fox’s brother to speak at the school earlier this year. “She loved working with kids, and she loved her job,” said Balfour. “She made working here a better place (She was) a fantastic person to work with. She made you feel good to be around.”

The Broken Chain We little knew that day, That God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, In death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, You did not go alone. For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. You left us beautiful memories, Your love is still our guide. And although we cannot see you, You are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, And nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again. Missing you every day With love, Jean & Family

The Arnprior Community Safety Partnership Group (formerly community policing) continued its annual ‘crayon crackdown’ initiative in the lead-up to Christmas again this year. The effort aims to raise awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving awareness among students. St. John’s XXIII was honoured Dec. 11 for best effort for its crayon crackdown work. The idea, said the partnership group’s Bill Kirby, is to get the students to draw pictures with a message that will deter drinking and

driving. The students’ art works are put on 500 bags withFamily help from Tom services Bissonnette, manager of the Arnco-ordinator prior LCBO. “Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house not a creature was stirring not even a mouse. With a dusting of snow on the ground (we hope), the smell of pine from the Christmas tree (to pee on), eggnog and hot chocolate (to spill) and the smell of fresh cinnamon in the air, you can’t help but noticed it’s Christmas. Although a beautiful time of year it can also be a very dangerous one for your pets with so much tempting them from food to decorations. Decorations on the tree may look like fun, but they can be very dangerous. Some ornaments are made of glass and if they fall off the tree and break they can cut the pads on their feet and be fatal if swallowed. Tinsel is a beautiful addition to a Christmas tree. However, if swallowed can cause major tummy problems not to mention the colourful

bowel movements they produce. The Christmas tree itself can be a hazard. Make sure it is in a place that can be closed off because pets love to play in and around them. Getting tangled in the electrical cord and watching all of your hard work come crashing down is a sight to see not to mention a fire hazard. Also be very careful with food. Chocolate contains Methylxanthines, Theobromine and Caffeine. If you believe your pet has ingested large amounts of chocolate consult your veterinarian. Onions and celery can also be a health concern for your pets, as well as, Xylitol. A sugar substitute used in sugar-free gum, candy and other products, it can be harmful to dogs. If you must include your

Pet Talk

IAN STUPP

pet in the merriment of the season, remember that chicken and turkey bones can cut up their stomachs, as well, chicken and turkey bones can cause choking. Alcohol should not be given to your pets and to prevent tummy upset keep them away from sauces and desserts. A plain piece of meat with skin and bone removed would be greatly appreciated. You will be happy, they will be happy and so will your carpets.

Plants can be very dangerous as well. Holly – This ornamental plant is a common Christmas fixture. Holly has some of the same toxic components as chocolate. Mistletoe – Is a very toxic Christmas decoration. The Mistletoe can cause severe irritation of the digestive tract. Poinsettia – Is minimally to moderately toxic. These are members of the spurge family. Ingestion of these leaves generally results in mild to moderate digestive upset. From my family to yours, all the very best for the holiday season and a prosperous New Year! The items to be found inside Prior Things on Madawaska Boulevard include antiques, home décor and collectibles.

Prior Things is a blast to the past for those who walk through the door Scott Campbell

scottcampbell@metroland.com

There are crates of 7-UP and Coca-Cola and old dairy bottles on the shelf. There are reproduced movie prints on the wall and even a washer from another time by the door. They are just a small sample of what can be found at Prior Things. The Arnprior business has been open since the Sept. 26 weekend. The owners have a love for auction hunting and decided they wanted to share it with the public.

Husband and wife Jennifer and Corey Tourangeau teamed up with Bert Phillips and spent two months on renovations. The storefront desk is made from real barn board, noted Jennifer. The building at 54 Madawaska Blvd. used to be a bakeshop. “Prior Things is a play on words,” said Jennifer. The name rather obvious, once anybody enters the shop. “We designed everything like you are walking into someone’s collection.” The reception has been positive with at least one customer calling the layout of the

shop quite beautiful. “The town’s been really receptive,” said Phillips. Plenty of the items for sale were acquired from auctions, estate sales, buyers and collectors, said Phillips. They have travelled to places like Lanark, Smith Falls, Beachburg and even on the Quebec side. Ducks Unlimited glassware was recently brought in, which they got for a good deal. The group also refurbishes furniture, which has actually become a rather popular part of their business. “Whatever we have redone never stays

around long,” said Jennifer. “People like the older furniture.” Prior Things is entering its first Christmas season, so the owners are really just testing the waters. There have gift certificates for those considering something unique for a gift. People can check out the store on the website or its Facebook page. Father’s Model T paint job not appreciated by all family members Mary Cook’s Memories MARY COOK

us. The time it took to ride into Renfrew with the horse was cut in half, and Mother who soon mastered the fine art of driving the old car, even ventured as far as Ottawa. But those mismatched fenders didn’t sit well with Father. He managed to partially repair the dent with a hammer, and he said one day when he had a bit of time to spare, he would nail a piece of tin over the hole in the floorboards in the back. And then, after the first snowfall that year (and it was a doozie), Father said it was time to think about putting the car up for the winter. I was really upset, because I never once thought we couldn’t drive the Model T through the snow. Father pointed to the narrow tires with the stem of his pipe

and said, “ya wouldn’t even get as far as the gate in the snow with those.” So Father drove the car into the drive shed where it would sit until the spring thaw. Father was pretty proud of that old car. And that fall day he decided it was only fitting that the Model T have fenders that matched. Buying new ones from Thacker’s Garage in Renfrew, even if they were available, was out of the question, so Father decided he would paint them both the same colour. He looked over all the old cans of paint stacked on a shelf in the drive shed. There were bits and drabs of paint; a bright green used to freshen the pump in the spring. About an inch in the bottom of another paint can was bright orange. And then Father locked his eyes on the can of silver paint used to paint the stove pipes in the house. “By gar, there’s enough here to do the job real nice,” he said, shaking the can to make sure. He got a paint brush that had been sitting in a pot of turpentine,

gave it a few swipes with an old rag he found on the dirt floor, and without consulting Mother, began slapping the silver paint onto the two front fenders. Father had to scrape the bottom of the paint pail to get the very last drop out, which he slathered over the already painted fenders for good measure. Well, all of this was done without consulting Mother. It was getting dark in the drive shed when he asked me to run in the house and get Mother. “Don’t tell her about the painting ... just tell her I need her out here for a real nice surprise.” Well, Mother threw a sweater over her house dress and went out to see what Father wanted, with my sister Audrey close on her heels. What he wanted, and what he expected was for Mother to be overjoyed with the new silver fenders! She slapped her hand over her mouth, and said nothing. It was Audrey who said exactly what she thought of Father’s paint job. She vowed she wouldn’t be caught

dead in a car with silver fenders, and that’s all there was to it. She said if she had to drive into town in it, Father could let her out at the outskirts. Well, she wouldn’t have to worry about it for a few months anyway. The car was in the drive shed for the winter. The next day, a Saturday it was, Father rounded up the three brothers, and rolled four big blocks of wood from the wood pile into the drive shed. And as if it was as light as a feather, they hoisted up the car and put the four blocks under it, freeing the wheels from the cold dirt floor for the winter. Audrey changed her mind about riding in the car with the silver fenders when she found out she either got in or stayed home when spring rolled round. As for me, I thought the paint job added a touch of class to the old car. I knew we were the owners of the only car in all of Renfrew County with silver fenders, and a hole in the floor where I could see the Northcote road without even looking out a window.

We hadn’t had the old Model T Ford for a full year. It came to us through the simple act of a trade. A neighbour needed sand from our gravel pit, he had no money to pay for it, and we got the old battered car instead of cash. It was that simple. The deal was made with the shake of a hand. Load after load of gravel was hauled by my brothers to the neighbour’s culvert, which had been washed away with the spring run-off of the Bonnechere River, and when the final load was delivered, my brother Everett drove the old Model T home. It wasn’t much to look at. The two front fenders were different colours, a result of the original owner trying, and failing, to paint over a deep dent, and there was a hole in the floor board in the back seat as big as a pie plate that allowed you to see the washboard road out of Northcote without looking out the window. But it was our first car, and it opened up a whole new world for

This week’s puzzle answers in next week’s issue

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 This can be a terrific week for you, Aries. Make the most of every moment and don’t be surprised as you successfuly juggle many different things at once. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Work may seem overwhelming at times in the week ahead, Taurus. Keep your head down and stay focused on the tasks at hand. Others will be impressed. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, make the most of an opportunity to move forward with your goals. You have plenty of energy, and your mind is focused. Hang around with like-minded individuals as well. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Don’t get too wrapped up in other people’s business, Cancer. You don’t want to intrude on others, and your loved ones are fully capable of solving their own problems. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, you may feel like you’re on top of the world this week. That’s because you have the potential to conquer an elusive goal in the next few days. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Act now, Virgo, or you might get left behind. You can’t sit around and wait for things to unfold. Sometimes you have to take charge, and this is one of those times.

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 There may be some conflict in your world this week, Libra, especially when it involves your emotions and potential disputes. Keep your mind open and try new things. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, concern yourself with substantive actions and not empty promises. This will make it easier for you to make decisions about pressing issues. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Try not to spread yourself too thin, Sagittarius. If you do, you will not be able to put your best foot forward. If you feel yourself getting stressed, step back. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, now is a great time to take a step back and exhale. Avoid taking on any additional responsibilities. Instead, take some time to recharge. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, let friends know how much they mean to you because you might not say it often enough. Others will appreciate your candor and generosity. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, you tend to hold your feelings inside and that can be unhealthy. Share your feelings more often so negative energy will not build. 1217
