The new Arnprior council’s first economic development and planning advisory committee meeting Monday proved an interesting brainstorming session. Talk of annexing parts of West Carleton and even a section of McNab-Braeside that includes Peter Smith’s residential development plan, topped the

Right now a bottleneck occurs because the town has one firm on retainer, J.L. Richards. Post office fate depends on hiring
Committee brainstorms on development planning
JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com
The fate of the Braeside post office appears to be dependent on who is hired as postmaster next. McNab-Braeside council was updated on the issue Tuesday, but there are still questions outstanding regarding the timing of finding a new location of the post office that closed March 31 after being given notice by the former postmaster’s family. However, council is optimistic a new location will be found given the comments in a letter to Deputy Mayor Christine Blimkie by Canada Post area manager Patrick LaVictoire that the corporation will “begin the process of staffing the postmaster position so we can resume permanent postal service in Braeside as soon as possible.” Mayor Mary Campbell said it is crucial to the township’s economic prosperity that the postal service be maintained. About 175 area businesses depend on it, she noted. Concern was raised about the future of the post office when Canada Post rejected a township offer to temporarily use the downstairs in the old municipal building (fire hall #3) and cancelled a meeting Monday with the Watsons, owners of Robbins Confectinery. Blimkie explained that Canada Post doesn’t want to make any commitments until it determines who will be hired as the new Braeside postmaster, replacing Harold Leitch, who died in January. In the meantime, Canada Post has

Continued from front Reid cautioned no decisions were made during the first meeting, it being more of an information and “open discussion” session to explain various terms of reference. “We talked a little bit about a lot of things, nothing in depth,” Reid said. “We are trying to identify short and long term goals. Annexation came up, but only because we need to know capacity beyond our borders. It’s not an agenda, we just need to know that information.” However, regarding slow growth in recent years, Reid said provincial standards and industry regulations mean qualified engineering firms working for developers should be considered for certain projects. “We will take their designs and work with best practices,” he said. “To analyze everything would be a little bit redundant.” The committee meets on the first Monday of every month, 8 a.m., at town hall. Arnprior Fire Chief John Okum said his department worked closely with Renfrew County paramedics and police at the scene of the Thursday’s fatal crash on Highway 17 near Arnprior. Bryan Casey, a 50-year-old father of three, was killed when his westbound Dodge Dakota was hit head-on by an eastbound SUV driven by Pembroke dentist Dr. Christy Natsis. The crew of firefighters, which in-
cluded several of the department’s new recruits, and other responding emergency personnel, had their work cut out for them. All responders worked diligently at tasks that included extrication of Casey from his pickup truck, traffic control and scene management. “They were very focused on the task at hand,” Okum told the ChronicleGuide earlier this week. The department was paged to the incident at 8:01 p.m. March 31. The severe impact of the crash caused so much damage to the truck
that extrication was an intricate process. “Compound extrication was required. It took 23 minutes to extricate the single male occupant,” Okum reported. “Everyone worked very well together.” Nineteen of Arnprior’s volunteer firefighters were at work that evening, though not all were on scene, said Okum. Additional personnel were called in almost immediately because of the report of the seriousness of the accident, said Okum,

Continued from front The victim has been identified as 50-year-old Bryan Casey, the father of three children under 12. Reports say the woman driving the other vehicle was Dr. Christy Natsis, 46, a Pembroke dentist. Ottawa Paramedics report they were called to a high-speed headon crash on Highway 17 west of White Lake Road just before 8 p.m. Casey, who was driving a Dodge Dakota westbound, suffered critical multi-system trauma and despite the “excellent efforts” of the Arnprior Fire Department extrication team, it took about 20 minutes to free him from the wreckage, report paramedics. The paramedics say they initiated “aggressive fluid replacement for the traumatic injuries.” The stricken driver was first taken to Arnprior hospital and then sent to the Trauma Unit of the Ottawa Hospital. During the transfer, with an Arnprior doctor on board the ambulance, Casey went into cardiac arrest. Despite efforts of paramedics and the onboard doctor, he succumbed to his injuries. The female driver of the westbound Ford Expedition was treated by paramedics for a minor leg injury and taken to Arnprior Hospital In its news release, Renfrew OPP reported that alcohol was a factor in the crash. Later, it was announced Natsis is being charged with impaired driving causing death, having a blood-alcohol level over .08 causing death and dangerous driving causing death. She was held in custody Thursday night, but following a bail hearing Friday, she was released on the consent of the Crown attorney. She was ordered to appear in Renfrew court May 11. Traffic was rerouted through Arnprior for several hours to allow investigators to examine the scene. Renfrew OPP Constable Ryan Besner is leading the investigation with the assistance of the technical traffic collision investigator. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Renfrew OPP at 613-432-3211 or 1888-310-1122.
McNab-Braeside council approved the appointment Tuesday of Dave Hartwick as deputy fire chief. Hartwick replaces Ken Walton, who was appointed fire chief last month. Hartwick was the Braeside (#3) station chief. That job will now be posted.

you live, you have equality of opportunity,” Tabbert said. Her vision includes policies to keep more doctors in rural areas, rewarding volunteer firefighters through tax credits, dealing with the gun registry and “finding the middle ground everybody can live with.” Tabbert describes the early days of her campaign as “just fantastic.”

Liberal candidate Christine Tabbert wants to talk about the issues that impact of the lives of Renfrew-NipissingPembroke residents; issues like jobs and taking care of our seniors and veterans. “It’s about economics, it’s about education opportunities, it’s about health care, it’s about all of those things and it’s very, very important that, no matter where Cheryl Gallant opened her Arnprior campaign office Monday by saying the budget that failed in the House of Commons last month was “family oriented” and will be reintroduced if her party wins May 2.
GUN & HUNTING SHOW
Long-gun registry promise lauded JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com
It will take a Conservative majority government to abolish the long-gun registry, NipissingRenfrew-Pembroke Conservative candidate Cheryl Gallant said Tuesday. Gallant was commenting on Conservative leader Stephen Harper’s commitment Monday to scrap the “ineffective and wasteful” long-gun registry if re-elected. Gallant said the Conservatives “stand with farmers, hunters and rural Canadians who are treated like criminals by the Liberals and their Separatist/NDP coalition because they own a rifle.” Gallant said a Conservative majority government will create
a wildlife and hunting advisory panel “to talk to rural people before new regulations are forced upon them.” Hunting, fishing and trapping remain central to the livelihood and traditions of the people of the Ottawa Valley and are an important part of many local and regional tourism industries, she said. “Unfortunately, these legitimate recreational and commercial activities are being threatened by unfair restrictions based on a misunderstanding of rural economies and conservation practices.” The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters issued releases strongly supporting the promises to eliminate the longgun registry and create the advisory panel.

Conservative candidate Cheryl Gallant opened election offices in Arnprior and Renfrew Monday afternoon, saying voters didn’t want an election, but she’ll work hard to win a fifth term as Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP. Prior to the ribbon-cutting with about a dozen Arnprior supporters, Gallant listed items in the “family oriented” budget her party vows to reintroduce if elected: up to $500 for children taking artistic activities, a program similar to the sports rebate; $50 a month to seniors to cover rising energy costs; up to $40,000 to doctors who open in rural areas, with similar incentives for other medical workers; and small business EI tax credits. “Everyone is saying they are upset about having an election,” Gallant said. “They are saying that $300 million (the cost to hold a federal election) should be for seniors, not wasted on an election.” Some observers say the Conservatives could have prevented an election if they had agreed to NDP requests to increase seniors’ pensions by $300 million, eliminate the federal sales tax on home-heating fuel, take measures to significantly increase

the number of rural doctors, and restore the home eco-energy retrofit program. Gallant wouldn’t say who her main competition is in the race, opting to push to get the vote out instead. “Complacency is the real competition,” she said. “That fact that people are tired of having elections all the time, but every vote counts.” Gallant continues to talk about a “coalition” of opposition parties versus her party’s desire for a majority as the only outcomes to prevent another election in the near future. The Liberals, NDP and Bloc agreed to form a coalition back in 2008, but it fell void when Prime Minister Stephen Harper pulled the plug and forced an election. Despite Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff saying the party with the most MPs will form the next government, Gallant charged that the opposition would try to topple a minority Conservative government in 2012 or beyond. Asked about Harper’s plans for a coalition with the NDP when Conservatives were in opposition in 2004, documented in a letter to the Governor General, Gallant said, “I don’t recall any remarks Mr. Harper did in the past.” The Arnprior campaign office is located at 107 John St.

There are three good reasons to vote for the Green Party, says Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke Green Party candidate Rosanne Van Schie. The 47-year-old contract worker and environmentalist cites democracy, the green economy and the chance to live in a low-carbon economy as major issues in her platform. When she cites democracy as the major issue in her campaign, she alludes to the lack of democratic values displayed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. These, she says, include the prorogation of Parliament under his leadership on two occasions since 2008 and the recent defeat of the Conservative government for contempt of Parliament. An economic advisor for the Algonquin First Nation community of Wolf Lake, she isn’t entirely new to the political arena.

His direct reference was to Gallant’s Twitter apology at 11:24 p.m. Thursday (March 31) after she referred to Ignatieff as Igaffi, an apparent comparison with Libyan dictator Muammar Ghadafi. Gallant’s original Twitter comment was about Wilmer Verch’s super efficient wood furnaces at the Renfrew Home Show before adding, “No carbon tax please, Igaffi!” Late Thursday night, her apology read: “M Ignatieff, sorry about remark on day 1. No place in debate about ideas and values.” Gallant’s comments, says Clouthier, are part of an ongoing parade of fearmongering or inappropriate remarks on such topics as Ottawa River Canadian heritage designation, abortion, and search-and-rescue operations in Atlantic Canada.

He tried to get his own windmill up at home.” Besides, she adds: “I think everyone is green at heart.” Van Schie’s campaign manager in this campaign is former Green Party candidate and Hyndford-area resident Gord McLeod. Congratulating Eric Burton, who had just been acclaimed as the New Democratic federal candidate in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke for the May 2 election, from left, are his nominator Kathy Eisner of Golden Lake, his wife and campaign manager Mandi Burton, outgoing riding association president and the party’s candidate in the last three elections Sue McSheffrey of Renfrew and his seconder Lois Airth of Renfrew.

Burton chosen as NDP candidate for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com
Former Arnprior town councillor Eric Burton is trying his hand at federal politics. He was unopposed for the New Democratic Party nomination for RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke at a party gathering Saturday in Cobden attended by about 40 NDP members. In his acceptance speech, Burton, 30, came out swinging against both the Conservatives and Liberals. Both are not addressing the major issues that are important to the majority of Canadians, he said. The old-line parties sit and watch as the corporate elite “allow jobs to sail away overseas, our air and water to be poisoned and those who fought and worked for this country to live in poverty.” They are allowing the corporate elite to “keep people from the benefits of living in this great country,” he said. “It’s time to take our country back.” Burton told party members he had begun to write a scripted speech, but decided to speak from the heart instead. “The world doesn’t need any more fancy speeches. It needs people willing to stand up and be counted,” he said. He said he’s been told this is a strong Conservative riding, but maintains that’s not the case when considering all the people who don’t vote. Promising to target the many first-time and non-voters, he said politicians must focus on the needs of all the people, not only “their rich and powerful friends.” “We can turn the tide in this election ... but we’ve got to reach out to the people and stand up for what’s right.” It’s an opportune time with a strong leader in Jack Layton, who is bringing up the issues that are real priorities to people and taking stands “not because the polls tell him to, but because he believes it,” he said. “I’m in this race to win,” Burton pledged, adding the riding needs an MP who can relate to all constituents and forge consensus instead of division. “We need to change the way we do things,” he said, adding that under the status quo, most people in the riding are falling further and further behind. Burton said the Conservatives give out tax breaks to the big banks and oil companies, but businesses in rural ridings get little in the way of assistance. As for
the Liberals, they can’t be trusted to follow through on their promises because they have broken them so many times in the past, he charged. Burton said the best solutions are home-grown, not the ones forced on communities from above. His nomination meeting followed a forum on agriculture that Burton had organized well before the election was called. It shows agriculture is a key issue for the NDP, he said, adding that government has to take steps to ensure family farmers get paid properly for their production and stop big corporations from siphoning off all the profits from food. The NDP’s national food strategy provides a guide to doing just that, he said. Outgoing riding association president Sue McSheffrey, who ran for the NDP in the past three elections, noted Burton had invited farmers of all political stripes to the forum. Unfortunately, the current MP isn’t so inclusive, she said, adding “it’s time to stop the polarization and time to start working on solutions.” Burton said he could have taken the easy route and joined the Conservative or Liberal parties in an effort to get involved politically. “But the reason I’m NDP is that it is the only one with the courage to do what needs to be done.” He said his parents worked hard to ensure he and his sister had opportunities they never had. “That’s what the NDP does … that’s what I want to do, give children opportunities to reach their potential,” he said. He said he looked seriously at the Green Party, but was “disappointed” by how right wing many of their policies are. It’s the NDP that have the stronger stands on the environment and climate change, he said. The Arnprior born and raised Burton said he learned a “tremendous amount” in his four years on town council. It taught him how to work with other politicians, access information and work on solutions, he said. “You work with people you don’t always agree with to find common ground ... the aim is to build consensus without sacrificing your integrity. “You learn that things don’t happen overnight, but if you keep focused and diligent, you’ll get somewhere.” Burton said he is inspired by Layton and also the leadership shown by the last two NDP federal and provincial candidates, McSheffrey and Felicite Stairs.

Voter complacency bad for all sides
Help Arnprior Legion fix its roof
Cheryl Gallant was right about at least one thing on Monday afternoon when she came to Arnprior and Renfrew to open election offices. Her most formidable opponent in this election is “complacency”. She is concerned her supporters might believe a win is inevitable, so why bother voting? Getting away from the incumbent’s self interest for a moment, complacency is also the left’s most formidable opponent. Consider: the Conservatives claimed the right to rule because they had 38 per cent of the popular vote in 2008. Their opponents, all to the left, ended up with combined 62 per cent. Add to this that 40 per cent didn’t vote. (A full 40,000 eligible voters in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke didn’t bother to cast a ballot.) How many of those voters would have been on the left? We think the vast majority, if not more. Here’s why. Conservatives get the vote out. Their supporters are motivated (mention gun registry, Ad scam, or a Harvard professor’s name and see how mad they get). The left is rarely angry. Apathy and ambivalence seem its natural state. We have little sympathy for a group that can’t be bothered to exercise its right to vote. For the young among them, as Rick Mercer said, they are too lazy to do what young people around the world are literally dying to do. If they wonder why tuition costs are skyrocketing, environmental and financial deficits have been heaped on their backs, the middle class is evaporating and the cynical Igot-mine-Jack mentality is taking root in Canada, they can blame themselves. No one said progress was easy. However, should Gallant cruise to victory on supporters – not all, of course – who refuse to weigh all their options, who thoughtlessly drink from the blue Kool Aid, we hold that this is equally intolerable. Voters in the riding deserve better. They deserve a level of discourse above the repetition of “opposition coalition.” Informed voters don’t buy the catch-phrases tossed about on all sides. They want candidates to go beyond the sound bites. And shouldn’t those voters, informed and rational voters, be the ones candidates want to win over most? Keep an open mind for now. Get informed. Attend the all-candidates’ debate at ADHS on Tuesday, April 19. It starts at 7 p.m.

Abandonment a bigger problem To the editor: Re: Humane Society on the Morbid Obese Dog story in ChronicleGuide March 31. The concern emphasis was on the dog’s obesity than the fact the dog was abandoned. At least the dog was fed, over fed but at least fed. I have watched the Animal Cops shows with dogs badly neglected and abandoned with the consequences of being starved. I would like to have seen and been educated more that there are certain dogs who are more prone with a disposition to obesity than other dogs, as well as humans who are more disposition (genetics) to obesity. There are breed of dogs that have a barrel waist like the Pugs and the Bull Dogs. Just like there are breed of cats who naturally have large size such as the Coon Cat. Education in light of there are dogs who just have the begging down to a fine art. There are dogs who just love their food. There are dogs who have a fixation or an obsession when it

comes to food. In a multi-animal family there are dogs who will take from the other animal food dishes. There are reasons why an animal become obese other than calorie intake and out take. There are also medical reasons that will lead to obesity despite watching the animal’s diet. Discrimination against those who are obese is rampant in a society, yet educations on causes of obesity are not so clear cut as calorie intake and output. It seemed that this article on this animal obesity became judge, jury and convicted without a trial, yet the reasons behind the dog’s obesity may not be simple or clear cut as indicated. If you are going to educate the public – then educate – with all facts – not just a one-sided prejudice viewpoint. The fact that this beautiful breed of dog was abandoned should have been the highlight of the story rather than the consequences of an overfed dog. Lenore Whelan Arnprior
To the editor: An open letter from the Arnprior Legion The Arnprior Legion Branch 174 finds itself in a very vulnerable position. Our roof over the office and lounge areas is leaking badly and requires immediate extensive (and expensive) repairs. We have to raise $28,000 to make adequate repairs to that part of our building. For this we desperately need your help. The members of our branch have been doing their best for the last 80 years by giving their support, financial and otherwise, to a multitude of community needs, e.g. those of the hospital and nursing home, seniors, youth and people in need of all ages. How can you help? We offer some great meals: You can attend our breakfasts - the last Saturday of every month from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a,m., for a full breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries, beans, French toast, regular toast, juice, coffee and tea, at a cost of only $6. Lunch – every Tuesday (soup and sandwich) in the Lounge all day from 11 a.m. $4.50. Hamburgers – every Friday in the Lounge from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. $3.50. Dinner – the first Friday of every month: Roast beef, turkey, etc. from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. $12. More public support of these meals would be appreciated. We are currently appealing to the business community and to our own membership for support. Undoubtedly there will be other activities planned, targeting the community as a whole. We welcome your ideas and suggestions of how you, as members of the community, can help us in our efforts to repair our facility, so that we, in turn, can continue to function and serve you. Thank you for your willingness to be involved. E.T. (Ted) Graham, fundraising chairman Arnprior Legion
Coalition this, coalition that To the editor: Has every Conservative Member of Parliament and wannabe Member of Parliament been commanded to use the word coalition as many times as possible, ad nauseam? Every possible piece of communication from the Conservatives mentions a Liberal, NDP, Bloc coalition, or as some Conservatives diehards would love to say, Liberal, socialist, separatist coalition! Never mind that the fact that Mr. Harper sat down a few years ago in coalition discussions.

don’t know of any crisis that has made the papers in this area. As for the view of rural residents, a meeting hosted by Ms. MacLeod in Osgoode last year had the majority of speakers saying they were much more afraid of coyote hunters than coyotes. This seems to be the continuing view this year judging from letters from rural residents and editorials in suburban newspapers across Ontario. One editorial states “drowning, drunk drivers and lightning pose immensely greater danger to people than coyotes do. We need less politically-motivated and irrational fear-mongering and more of the common sense that other major cities across North America have adopted in living with coyotes.

CP rail line should be used for recreation To the editor: Being an owner of a property adjacent to the CP rail line I would like to express my view of its future. Opposite to an opinion expressed March 24 in The Arnprior Chronicle-Guide, I would welcome its use as a recreation trail for cycling and hiking in the summer and cross country skiing and possibly snowmobiling in the winter, provided limitations are imposed on speed and noise in residential areas. If the CPR, a company whose sole interest is to make a business of operating rail lines, is unable to operate this line it is doubtful other investors will be able. As a commuter line, again it is doubtful if there is enough population to make it viable. As a recreation trail linking Pembroke, Cobden, Renfrew, Arnprior,

To the editor: The coyote killing contests are all about the campaign being waged by agriculture to obtain increased compensation. It is after all an election year. Never mind that compensation claims are down by 25 per cent in Ottawa in 2010. Never mind that livestock losses due to coyote predation represent only one per cent of the numbers of sheep and 0.08 per cent of the numbers of cattle produced in Ontario. Pretty insigniďŹ cant when you consider that small businesses, which are as economically challenged as farmers, experience up to three per cent annually in lost proďŹ ts due to theft and get absolutely no compensation from government. I am not sure what suburban community MPP Lisa MacLeod is referring to when she states that “we’ve had near-crisis levels of coyotes,â€? but I

Continued from Page 8 This is, of course, complete deection, and nothing else. I’m amazed that they believe that we are unable to see through it. The Conservatives obviously hope that this tactic will take the mind of voters away from the ignominious defeat of the government, and their unforgiveable actions. Note to all politicians of all stripes ‌ stick with the facts, spare us the insulting spin. We can see what all your silly little whiz kids are cooking up in the back rooms. Never mind the coalition, and by the way, I don’t want to see a coalition, but I am not going to run and hide under the bed at mention of the name. There are many successful coalitions around the world; in fact one is working very well in the UK at the present moment of time. If Mr. Harper had spent a little more time travelling outside of Canada, and getting a sense of the rest of the world, he would realize this. Here is a government that for the ďŹ rst time ever in our country’s history was found in contempt of parliament and which then fell on a resulting noconďŹ dence motion. Don’t try and scare us. There are some deadly serious questions here ‌ simply, did the government mislead the House and did they hide ďŹ gures of major expenditures? Why did they not supply enough information on the cost of the F-35 ďŹ ghter jets, on their justice system reforms and their projections for corporate proďŹ ts and tax rates? Why‌ please tell us, and tell us straight, without deection, and without using that silly word coalition please. Otherwise, what and who are we really supposed to believe?

Pakenham, Almonte, Carleton Place and Smiths Falls, it could be a signiďŹ cant tourist attraction for the area. All these towns have existing parks around rivers and lakes and have a variety of restaurants and other attractions and at approximately 20 to 30 kilometres apart are within a days cycling of each other. With good management and some investment to add facilities along the route for picnicking, camping, rest areas and signs this trail could be a popular destination for some of the 10,000,000 residents within a few hours distance by car. A vibrant recreational trail would be an asset to all those communities along its route. Ian Marshall Renfrew

SPECIAL BIRTHDAY GIFT A sad tale of deception and betrayal that cost a 12-year-old Arnprior girl her laptop computer has had a happy ending. Kelly-Anne Remus wrote a letter published in last week’s Arnprior Chronicle-Guide warning people to beware unscrupulous people like the man who ripped off her daughter’s much used laptop on the guise of installing new software into it. After reading the letter, Andra and Pete Bettencourt of White Lake Marina decided to offer McKenzie Remus a Gateway laptop computer of theirs. Andra, with McKenzie above, dropped it off on the weekend. The timing was perfect as McKenzie was celebrating her birthday Saturday. “I thank you from the bottom of my heart,” KellyAnne told Andra. “It was the perfect birthday gift. You have restored some of our faith in humanity.” Photos courtesy Kelly-Anne Remus

Medical tourism is a term being used more and more often and two Arnprior residents will soon have their own experiences to talk about. Multiple Sclerosis patients Katherine Miller-Gatenby and Jim Short will both travel to Costa Rica this month for surgery they hope will improve the quality of their lives, which has been deteriorating over the years as the symptoms caused by the central nervous system disease progress. Both will undergo a relatively new treatment introduced by Dr. Paolo Zamboni, an Italian doctor whose research indicates a simple operation to unblock restricted bloodflow out of the brain can help alleviate or rid patients altogether of the debilitating symptoms. The venoplasty treatment is based on the idea that many types of MS are actually caused by a blockage of the pathways that remove excess iron from the brain - and by clearing out a couple of major veins to reopen blood flow, the root cause of the disease can be eliminated. The MS Society of Canada says an estimated 55,000-75,000 Canadians have multiple sclerosis with prevalence rates ranging from one case per 500 people to one in 1,000 across the country. Miller-Gatenby had what was expected to be about an hourlong procedure Tuesday (April 5). The treatment is in its early stages and there are still some questions as to its effectiveness. While there are many countries in which the surgery is available, it is not yet available in Canada. Despite the uncertainty, Miller-Gatenby was ready. “My biggest concern about having the procedure done is that it may have no immediate, measurable effect at all. That could mean that I will improve over time, but without anything dramatic or immediate, I won’t know for sure that it was worth the money and effort,” she says. “It has been a tough year, reading as much as I can about the procedure and hearing entirely too many opinions about its effectiveness and finally making a decision.” DECISIONS It was after a particularly difficult walk while on vacation in West Virginia with her husband Reg that she made up her mind. After much research and discussion on the topic, she believes in the theory. “Dr. Zamboni’s response was to do an angioplasty in veins where there is something impeding the flow of blood from the
brain,” explains Miller-Gatenby. Jim Short’s sister is a neighbour of Miller-Gatenby, so the two are familiar with each other and their similar plights. Short’s venoplasty is scheduled for April 16 and he’s hoping the treatment will help ease symptoms that force him to now use a cane and scooter to get around. “I’ve been on the bench for the past 10 years,” says Short, whose MS led to early retirement and years of dealing with the various symptoms. His MS first presented itself with a “bad” attack in 1989 in Halifax. Working on a loan audit for Canada Trust Corporation, Short was living in Saskatoon but had travelled for work and was staying overnight at a hotel when he woke up feeling ill. “I got up and as soon as I opened up my eyes I couldn’t see properly and felt nauseated,” says Short. “I really got slammed.” It took some time for MS to be diagnosed for certain. “I was a guy, I was young, I didn’t go to the doctor,” he says. DIAGNOSIS Miller-Gatenby, 54, was diagnosed with probable MS at the age of 21. At that time, she says, the only way for the disease was to be confirmed was through autopsy. MS first presented itself with an inflammation of the optic nerve in her right eye. “Vision problems are fairly typical,” she explains. She had terrible headaches and eventually wound up in hospital. “I was really, really sick,” says Miller-Gatenby. “And there was nothing, really, to treat it at the time For quite a while, generally speaking, an attack, for her, was lasting six to eight weeks. Then the symptoms recede. After the first attack, MillerGatenby went back to university and earned a degree, working a physically challenging job as a waitress and going on to work and live in Ottawa. “Ten years after the first attack I had another one,” she explains. Numbness, vision issues and other symptoms returned. It was at this time her diagnosis was confirmed to be MS and she was put in touch with the MS clinic of Ottawa. Again, Miller-Gatenby’s symptoms receded and she had what she described as “little bouts” on and off over the years. Though physicians did recommend drugs to treat the symptoms and the disease’s progression, she resisted taking them because of a number of side effects. However, that approach seems to have run its course.
“Since we moved to Arnprior nine years ago, the symptoms haven’t receded,” says MillerGatenby. When she first moved to town, she was able to run five kilometres. “Then I fell and broke my hand and that was the end of that,” she says. She used to walk and can’t do that anymore. And she continues to deal with something not often talked about - the bladder and bowel issues caused by the MS. “Your nerve impulses don’t work properly,” she explains. The procedure takes about an hour and is done through a main vein in the groin. Total costs for the trip are somewhere around the $20,000 mark. Recent media reports have raised concerns about patients’ abilities to seek follow-up treatments in Canada.

Arnprior Snipers cap great season with championship win versus Renfrew After a great regular season, the Arnprior Snipers met Renfrew Farrell’s for the Upper Ottawa Valley Minor Hockey League championship. In game one in Renfrew, Farrells dominated, winning 5-0. Anticipation for the second game had the Snipers hyped and ready to rock, returning to their own barn. On March 23, the Snipers gave it their all and delivered the goods, winning 3-1. All Arnprior goals were scored in the second period. The first was scored by Harley Smith assisted by Grayson Thompson. The second goal was scored by Jared Wilson assisted by Chase Young and Jaxson Brown. The Arnprior fans jumped and cheered with joy when Harley Smith scored the third goal to sew up the game. Game three was a nail-biter as the teams returned to Renfrew. The stakes were high The team to win would take home the title. Two periods were played with no score thanks to the excellent defensive play of the whole Snipers team and the excellent goaltending by ‘The Green Monster’ Travis Wilson. Jared Wilson had the Arnprior fans raise the roof with cheers as he sniped two goals in the final

The first goal was unassisted and the second goal was assisted by Connor Ogilvie. All season each player bought into the total team effort. It showed in the final series where everyone played above all the coaches’ expectations. The coaching staff thank all players for their hard work and dedication and an extra special thanks to the managers who spent their time organizing practices, games and tournaments for the kids and did their best to keep head coach Harvey Ogilvie in line. Thanks to the fans, who in-
cluded grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters. The Snipers placed fourth in the league out of 21 teams and finished in the finals in four tournaments. They won their division in the Bell Capital Cup, which is the world’s biggest minor hockey tournament. The Arnprior Snipers thank all sponsors for their generous donations and to all the volunteers who helped the team. “We want you all to know that without your help we wouldn’t be where we are today. “Congratulations Snipers, you did us proud.”
It was a good weekend in Hamilton for the Arnprior Pride bantam girls team March 26-27, as they were able to come away with a bronze medal at one of the largest basketball tournaments in Ontario. The Hamilton tournament consisted of 270 games in 12 divisions. Arnprior battled hard in their first contest against Kingsville Friday night and lost a heartbreaker 33-30. Their second contest against Guelph turned out to be a physical battle at both ends of the court. Guelph rallied late to post a 27-22 victory. In the final round-robin game, Arnprior finally broke through with a 40-28 victory over Haldimand, led by the scoring of Emma Shoveller and Paula Meek. After the round-robin, teams are seeded based on victories and score differential.
Arnprior met Flamborough in an early morning semi-final game. The Pride came out slowly in the contest and could not make up the early deficit, despite a breakout game from Logan Kenny, falling 35-20. The bronze medal game pitted the Pride against the Toronto Lords. With just eight players remaining because of an ankle injury to Elizabeth Chirico, the Arnprior team responded to the challenge. They took an early lead and never trailed in the game, despite numerous attempts from Toronto to pull closer. Led by Lindsay Sherman, Jenika Steele, Mackenzie Munro and Emma Pettigrew, Arnprior defeated Toronto 37-31. The team’s last games of the year are coming up in Stittsville for the Eastern Ontario Basketball Association finals.

The bill for Bonnechere Manor’s new auditorium is closer to being paid, thanks to a huge philanthropic contribution by M. Sullivan & Son of Arnprior. The older manor building housed an auditorium, but there has never been an auditorium in the present manor building that opened in 1995. M. Sullivan & Son is building the auditorium at a cost of just over $1 million, but last year’s tender also featured a $100,000 philanthropic donation. The project is a big deal to community members because it is seen as a vital way to connect the manor’s staff and residents with each other, and with surrounding communities, through various in-house activities. Like several residents of the county-owned manor, M. Sullivan & Son has been around for a while. Sullivan & Son project manager Chris
McMahon says the company, which was founded 97 years ago, employs about 150 staff, including those out of its Arnprior and Kingston offices. This philanthropic contribution, says McMahon, is a way of continuing the company’s connection to the community. McMahon was speaking when he and CEO-President Bob MacLaren visited county council chambers March 30 to make the ceremonial $100,000 donation. The two Sullivan & Son staff members also accepted a plaque from Renfrew County Warden Bob Sweet that recognized the company’s quality construction and philanthropic contribution. The ceremonial presentation also featured Bonnechere Manor Foundation members, including chairman Don Goulet, as well as county officials. Among them were Bonnechere Manor general manager Shayne Hoelke and Janice Visneskie, chair of the county’s health committee.

Frightening side effects of MS drugs Continued from Page 11 Mahir Mostic of Niagara Falls died in October after having a second venoplasty. He had the first one in June and it worked, but then his symptoms returned, so he went back to Costa Rica and had a second procedure in November. He died following the second procedure. With a good support system established that includes her GP, neurologist and other medical professionals, Miller-Gatenby’s fears are minimal. “I’m not too concerned about that,” she says. She will have had recovery time (nine days in Costa Rica total) and a scan be-
fore leaving so any problems are likely to be identified. For MS attacks, inflammation is often treated with steroids, which come with a range of possible side effects, including increased blood pressure, mood swings, cataracts, high blood sugar and infections. Plasma exchange is another option if steroids don’t work. A number of drugs have been used to modify the disease course, often suppressing the immune system and also often with their own serious and sometimes life-threatening side effects. The drugs cost $20,000 to
$40,000 per year. The medication, to Miller-Gatenby and Short, was a frightening option. “People have to be really, really desperate,” says Miller-Gatenby. “All of them have side effects that are really, really horrible. “I have been able to resist, my neurologist thinks I should be on them.” Does Short have any reservations as he gets ready to head to Costa Rica. “None whatsoever,” he says. He has done the research and weighed the risks and feels Dr. Zamboni’s treatment offers the very real possibility of some relief from the MS.

didates forum already arranged in the riding, including the much anticipated rematch between Conservative Cheryl Gallant and Independent Hec Clouthier April 13 at the Pembroke Sportsman’s Club. The spirited debate over the gun registry is widely credited with turning the tide in the 2000 election, which saw Gallant claim the riding for the then Alliance party. The sportsman club forum will be held at the group’s clubhouse on Doran Road at 7 p.m.
In a news release, the club says the “question-and-answer event is being organized by sportsmen for sportsmen with a focus on federal government-controlled activities and management practices which have profound effects on migratory birds and fisheries and impact on our heritage practices of hunting, fishing, trapping, and recreational target shooting, besides our Canadian birthright to navigate unimpeded on navigable waterways.” The next night (April 14), the Renfrew

Two men have been arrested after a motor was stolen out of a snowmobile at Arnprior Sportland last week. Renfrew OPP report the break-in was reported to them on March 29. Sometime overnight someone cut the fence at the Pine Grove Road business. Once inside, they took the motor out of a 2000 Arctic Cat. Another attempted break-in was reported at a neighbouring business, but the culprits were not successful in getting in. Later Carleton Place OPP officers stopped a vehicle containing stolen property, including the motor. A 40-year-old Carleton Place man and a 35-yearold Laurentian Valley man were both charged with numerous offences, including break, enter
and theft at Sportland and possession of stolen property over $5,000. It was one of 137 calls for service Renfrew OPP received last week. IT’S NOT MINE On Friday, April 1 at about 11:45 p.m., OPP Constable Adam Nitschmann stopped a vehicle on White Lake Road for a traffic offence. Open alcohol was located in the vehicle, but neither the driver nor the passengers admitted to owning it. The driver, a 16year-old McNab-Braeside male, was charged with being a person under 19 having liquor. On April 2 at midnight, Const. Nitschmann was conducting RIDE spot checks at White Lake Road and Russett Drive in
McNab-Braeside. While speaking to a driver, open alcohol was spotted inside a vehicle. Two male passengers, an 18-year-old Kinburn teenager and a 17-yearold Pakenham resident were charged with being under 19 and having alcohol.
The Canadian Parents of Murdered Children and Survivors of Homicide Victims (CPOMC) is holding a special workshop Tuesday, April 12 from 9 a.m. to noon in Ottawa City Hall’s Jean Pigott Hall during National Vic-
tims of Crime Awareness Week April 10 to 16. CPOMC members include Susan Love whose son Phillip, of Arnprior, was murdered in Halifax in 2007. To register for the workshop, email admin@cpomc.ca.
DOMESTIC DISPUTES Renfrew OPP officers responded to five domestic disputes last week. One man was charged with assault, another was charged with assault and breach of probation, and a woman was charged with possession of marijuana and public intoxication. Arnprior officers responded to 17 domestic disputes during March with some criminal charges laid.

STEVE NEWMAN steve.newman@metroland.com
A fact-finding report from Renfrew County director of development and property Paul Moreau reiterates what county councillors have been saying for the better part of three years. Moreau concludes in a recent memo to county council that Canadian heritage designation for the Ottawa River does not affect existing laws and regulations vis-àvis land use on the same river. The same designation, he emphasize, does nothing to expand or enhance the authority of a conservation authority. In 2008, the federal environmental and Ontario natural resources ministers proclaimed support for the designation of the Ottawa River as a Canadian heritage river. But the final sign-off by Environment Minister John Baird never happened and lobbying continues with the current environment minister, Peter Kent, to bring the issue back for approval. As indicated in a May 16, 2008 news release from the Government of Canada, “The Canadian Heritage Rivers System is a joint federal-provincial-territorial initiative that gives national recognition to Canadian rivers of extraordinary natural, cultural and recreational significance.” Three years later, the river remains without the designation that many county councillors and business people believe would push local tourism to a higher level. Others remain unconvinced, including Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke Conservative MP Cheryl Gallant, who has been
April 7 2011 - ARNPRIOR CHRONICLE-GUIDE
No end in sight on river heritage designation accused of partisan politics and fearmongering, given the original idea was spearheaded by former local Liberal MP Len Hopkins. Independent candidate for the riding, Hec Clouthier, points out that members of the local area’s Ottawa River heritage committee featured members of all political stripes who just wanted to see recognition for the river and a chance to attract more tourists. It doesn’t appear that’s going to happen any time soon, especially if the Conservatives and Gallant remain in power. Members of county council have practically thrown up their arms in frustration, wondering what the resistance is all about But they will press on, as Arnprior Reeve Walter Stack suggested they do, during the March 30 session of county council. His council has passed a resolution upholding support of the river’s heritage designation. He said this was important since the council elected last October included five new members, and, therefore, it was possible they would have a different perspective on the river’s heritage designation. Arnprior recently supported the designation, as did Whitewater Region, by a 4-2 vote. Because of the changing face of many councils in the last election, Stack suggested all Renfrew County municipalities vote again to support or reject Canadian heritage designation of the Ottawa River. Previous to this term, all 17 member municipalities on county council supported the designation.

Local Home Inspector becomes Member of the Certified PreOwned Homes Inspector Network Gordon M. Gerrie of Certified Pre-Owned Homes Canada Inc. is pleased to announce that Ron Dunbar of Dunbar Home Inspections was recently accepted into the Certified Pre-Owned Homes Inspector Network in Canada. As such, Ron will be able to offer the program to home sellers, thereby enhancing the sale of the property. Modeled after the Certified Pre-Owned Automobile programs that have become very popular with auto buyers, the program is designed to have a Prelisting Inspection on the property by a qualified Inspector who is a member of the of Certified Pre-Owned Homes Inspector Network, any deficiencies identified by the Inspector corrected and a Home Warranty is placed on the property for one year from closing for the benefit of the Buyer. The Home Warranty covers the structure, roof, heating and air conditioning systems, electrical, plumbing, ductwork as well as such components as central vacuum systems, door bells, garage door openers as well as appliances that remain with the house including refrigerator, stove, built-in ovens, microwaves and dishwashers. Dunbar sees this as a major benefit to sellers and buyers because it will bring peace of mind to the seller and the buyer. The buyer will rest easy that their new home has been thoroughly inspected, any deficiencies corrected and the home carries a warranty for the first year of ownership which can be renewed. Local dancers shine at national qualifying event
ARNPRIOR CHRONICLE-GUIDE - April 7 2011
Igaffi twitter reflects badly on riding: Liberal candidate Continued from Page 4 Tabbert says she has covered a lot of ground, touching base in such communities as Douglas, Deep River, Arnprior, Renfrew, Cobden, Petawawa, Pembroke and Eganville. “It’s been a very warm reception and lots of good talk about some of the issues,” Tabbert says. “It’s nice to see people engaged and interested and so friendly and warm. And she’s proud of her folksy, Renfrew County approach to politics. “One of the things I’ve been doing for a year and a half is going door to door and trying to engage directly with people directly on their doorstep. “I think it makes a big difference when people can meet you in person and talk about what’s on their minds and what the issues are,” she says.
So for the balance of the campaign, she says she’ll continue to do just that. “I’m open and accessible,” she says, reminding voters that there is all kinds of information on the website, Facebook and Twitter. “We’re using all the tools we have available to us.” By the end of the week Twitter would play a prominent role in the local campaign as incumbent Conservative Cheryl Gallant posted a Twitter that was followed by an apology to Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff. DISPARAGING COMMENT In the aftermath of Gallant’s Twitter calling the Liberal leader Igaffi, the local Liberal campaign issued the following statement: “This is not an April Fool’s joke
– once again Cheryl Gallant has been forced to apologize for yet another disparaging comment. The latest comment, which she made over the Internet, compared the Liberal leader to the Libyan dictator Moammer Gadhafi.” When asked for comment, Tabbert said “I take no joy in the negative attention that she brings to this riding. It is very unfortunate that the riding, and by extension the people in it, are portrayed in such a bad light. We deserve better.” It is not the first time Gallant’s comments have garnered negative national attention, she noted. “The comment is just the latest in a series of meanspirited, offensive public comments by the MP, the most recent example being her disparaging remarks about hardworking Newfoundlanders.”

Arnprior District High School students earned four acting awards and recognition for its stage manager at the Sears Drama Festival in Pembroke last week. The students performed Jonathan Dorf ’s 4 a.m. at the three-day festival, which ended with the adjudicator Lindsay Price’s critiques and awards March 30. While Fellowes’ Stressed and Mackenzie’s The Least Offensive Plays in the Whole Dam World were chosen to represent the district in the Eastern Regional competition in Oshawa April 17 to 21, ADHS certainly didn’t leave the festival empty handed. Jamie Bentz went home with one of the two awards of excellence presented for acting and acting awards of merit went to Josh Baxter and Conor Hogan. Not only was ADHS the only school to capture three acting awards, the whole cast was recognized in sharing the ensemble award with Fellowes. ADHS’s Timmy Hrkach won the stage manager’s award. It was definitely a good result for Jamie Bentz picked up an award of excellence for ADHS. Great job guys. her acting in the ADHS production of 4 a.m.

Thank You
Jack, Lorna, John and Tanya Murdoch wish to extend their thanks for expressions of sympathy and care received following the loss of Wade. There is an emptiness in our lives that will never be filled; kindnesses coming from friends and family (cards, flowers, food, memorial donations) will always be remembered. A very special thank you to those who helped in making March 12th such a memorable day, a true celebration in tribute to a full and happy life. Our appreciation goes to Eldon Smith and staff, especially for their efforts in accommodating all in attendance at the Funeral Home, Pastor Dan and Sue Bennett for the lovely message and music at the service, and Bud Lindsay and the group at White Lake for their unwavering support. Our sincere thanks to those friends whose contributions to the evening were musical, to Dave Fridgen for technical support, “hostess” Roxanne Barr, Randy Paulen, ADHS and AJ Charbonneau School for projection equipment. Our wholehearted thanks goes to Chris and Susie Kaerbye, David Ridgen and Kathie Kneller (multimedia presentations), Pete and Lisa Landon (technical coordination), John Scott (MC), Todd Sparling (Eulogist), Karen Barsoski, Dave Connelly, Dave Aldridge, Clint and Tiffany Duff, Darren and Jacki England and Matt and Cathy Sully; thanks not only for your efforts on this day, but for everyday, for knowing and loving Wade - together with Scott Wilson, Brian and Julie Armsden, John Ruckpaul, Shawn Hamilton, Dennis Hiller, Eoin Scobie, Rob O’Hara, Scott Anglin, Sheldon and Margot Marcellus, Bruce McDermid, Kevin Wilson, Mark Cunningham, Greg Connelly, Chris Chateauvert. To this unique group of friends, the bond you share is uncommon; may you continue to be inspirited by your dedication to each other, as Wade was during his lifetime. We have been fortunate to learn that many of you have felt a part of our family over the years; please know that you will always be family to us. Most of all, our every heartfelt thanks to Wade, for his many, extraordinary gifts.

IN MEMORIAM
DEATHS
CAMELON, Marlene December 6, 1948 April 10, 2006 Our mother is always with us. She’s the whisper of the leaves as we walk down the street. She’s the smell of certain foods we remember, flowers we pick and perfume that she wore. She’s our breath in the air on a cold winter’s day; she is the sound of rain that lulls us to sleep, and the colors of a rainbow. Our mother lives inside our laughter, and she’s crystallized in every tear drop. She is the place we came from, our first home and she’s the map we follow with every step we take. She’s was our first love, our first friend, and nothing, not time, not space, not even death can separate us. Love Always, Ron, Lisa, Tristan, Lindsay, Morgan, Lianne, Michael, Darby
In memory of a wonderful mother. We have a lot of things and people to be thankful for, especially to have had such caring parents like Willi and Joan.
Brian Jeffrey
CRAIG
Sept. 27, 1964 – April 6, 2010 The blow was great, The shock severe. We little thought, The end was near, And only those who have lost can tell, The pain of parting without farewell. More each day we miss you, Son and brother, Friends may think the wound is healed, But they little know the sorrow, That lies within our hearts concealed. Forever missed by Mom, Dad, Ken, Kim and Penny

Arnprior’s fifth annual Earth Day Festival will take place downtown Saturday, April 16. The festival, which will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., is being organized by the Greater Arnprior Environmental Action Council (EAC), in partnership with the Arnprior Business Improvement Association. Last year’s Earth Day Festival was a great success
and this year the EAC is confident it can build on that momentum by involving volunteers, participants and major local sponsors, including Reid Bros and MyFM. Organizations and local producers are jumping at the opportunity to participate in this exciting community festival. The EAC has high expectations that this year’s
event will be a great celebration. “It is so encouraging to see the great response and co-operation we have received from the town and from local organizations and businesses,” said EAC co-chair Amanda Burton. “Earth Day is a chance to celebrate the natural world and to build a strong and engaged community.” Along with displays and
information booths, the event will include activities for children, such as a recycled crafts table and face painting. There will also be vegan and organic meat barbecues featuring a local cheese and bacon option for the Dobson grass-fed beef burgers. The Optimist Club will host a bike rodeo to teach children about bicycle safety.
The EAC is interested in learning about any community initiatives leading up to the event. In particular, youth are encouraged to get schools, teams, churches and clubs in on the Festival. For info or to volunteer call 613-622-5719. “Get in on the action by doing your part for the environment and coming out to enjoy the day,” she said.

We’d like to take a moment to salute the strength and courage of Canada’s cancer survivors. A cancer survivor is any person living with a history of cancer; brave men, women and children who have overcome adversity and beat the odds. In recognizing these courageous individuals, we’re reminded to also acknowledge the invaluable contributions of family, friends, doctors and nurses in helping cancer patients defeat the disease. Their loving support and skill give cancer survivors the tools and strength needed to make it through their most difficult days. Please join us as we continue to fight for a cure, and celebrate the lives and determination of cancer survivors everywhere. Two time winner of the Landscape Ontario Award of Excellence

The Ontario’s Highlands Tourism Organization (OHTO) is spearheading a grassroots effort to increase tourism to the region, which has the lowest numbers of visitors to anywhere in Ontario, with only 2.5 per cent of the provincial total. Recognizing that most people who live in the area may not consider it as a tourist destination, the OHTO has created a campaign to change this attitude and to inform the local population that ‘Tourism Starts with You’. People are encouraged to share the attractions and experiences that they
love about the region at www.tourismstartswithyou.com with an added incentive that each submission counts as an entry to win an iPad 2. “This region has a lot to offer and it can become one of the premier destinations in the province,â€? explained OHTO marketing and communications co-ordinator Leah Piltz. “Additionally, tourism can become a signiďŹ cant contributor to the local economy, helping to create jobs and to sustain the community. But to encourage tourism to this area, people have to start thinking
about the broader picture, she said. Visitors to the www.tourismstartswithyou.com website are able browse entries and discover the wide variety of things there are to see and do right in their own backyard. From a luge track in Bancroft, to a skate park in Madoc, whitewater rafting in the Ottawa River, and more, visitors to the site will realize this region has much to offer. It is hoped that by familiarizing the public with these attractions, local residents are better able to inform visitors of what there is to do in the area.
This could be something as simple as a suggestion to a visitor of what do to by a gas station attendant or local walking down the street. According to the latest data from Statistics Canada, most tourists to the region are people visiting their friends and family – who by default become tourism experts. “They are the primary source of destination information, which is why meaningful growth in the tourism sector must begin with awareness among the local population, said Piltz.

Local residents asked to help boost tourism
Soon will come the holey birds Southerly flow brings spring weather and migrating birds With winter still gasping its final death throes, a number of spring phenomena are biding their time in making an appearance. At the time of writing, the deafening choruses of Spring Peepers and Chorus Frogs do not yet greet the night. Nor do writhing masses of mating Garter Snakes currently liven forest edges. However, all that will change with the next blast of warm, southern air. With the southerly flow will come swarms of migrating birds. Fox Sparrows will be among the first to return, scratching up a storm as they kick back dead leaves in search of seeds and insects. The air will come alive with the chatter of graceful Tree Swallows, their iridescent
green-blue backs reflecting the sun when they bank. As soon as the white-breasted swallows arrive, they start squabbling over abandoned woodpecker homes and birdhouses. As they are cavity-adopting birds, Tree Swallows must take whatever is available. BLUE NOTES Oddly, another blue-backed bird is the first back in its group. Eastern Bluebirds are thrushes and, except for their hardy cousins American Robins, are the first thrushes to return to our region. It is by no coincidence that Eastern Bluebirds and Tree Swallows are the first of their kind to return. If you are a bird that builds a nest on a tree limb, nest sites are
Michael Runtz Nature’s Way plentiful. But if you depend on either a woodpecker-made hole or one that rotted into existence where a limb broke off the trunk in which to place your nest, there really are not that many choices.
Larger birds also nest in tree cavities and these too tend to come back earlier than their non-cavity nesting relatives. Wood Ducks arrive before other small ducks, such as Bluewinged Teal. Wood Ducks nest in holes in trees while teal lay their eggs atop mounds in marshes. In the flycatcher world, Great Crested Flycatchers come back long before Eastern Wood-Pewees and Least Flycatchers do, even though all three nest in hardwood forests. The difference? Great Crested are the only flycatchers to nest in tree cavities! Other cavity adopters prefer to remain here for the winter. By staying behind, White-breasted Nuthatches, Eastern ScreechOwls, and Black-capped Chickadees get first dibs on cavities.
So why the drive to either stay behind or come back early to exploit this type of nest site? Why not just build a nest on a tree limb, like so many other birds do? The answer is simple. Placing your eggs inside a tree cavity increases the chances of them becoming young birds. Perhaps that is because the eggs are hidden from hungry eyes or that a cavity offers better protection from the elements. Not only do birds find tree cavities desirable. Flying Squirrels and Gray Squirrels inhabit smaller cavities. Porcupines and Raccoons den in larger ones. One thing for sure; with the next blast of warm southern air, the Holey Wars will once again be start anew! The Nature Number is 613-3872503; email is mruntz@start.ca.
