One person is reported dead in a four-vehicle crash that involved two tractor-trailer trucks on Highway 17 just west of Campbell Drive Wednesday afternoon. It was the second major crash on the same stretch in less than four hours (see page 7). While the police investigation is continuing, it is suspected that some drivers aren’t being careful enough when approaching paving in the area. Photo by Sherry Haaima

One killed, others hurt Two serious collisions occur as paving slows traffic on Highway 17 JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

CHEO TELETHON Local support for this weekend’s CHEO telethon is as strong as ever. The Pineridge Children’s Centre held a walk for CHEO and Arnprior Cooperators is holding a barbecue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, as well as manning phone lines.

One motorist was killed and there was at least two others injured in two collisions in a construction zone on Highway 17 west of Arnprior Wednesday. The most serious of the crashes occurred just after 3 p.m. and involved four vehicles, including two tractor-trailer trucks. Police report all vehicles were eastbound approaching an area that had been reduced to one-lane traffic because of paving in the area. In another crash about noon, an eastbound vehicle rear-ended another in almost the identical spot. At least one woman was taken to hospital in that collision. The later crash closed Highway 17 for

several hours, with traffic rerouted down Scheel Drive and White Lake Road. By press time, the name of the deceased had not been released. The conditions of the other motorists involved were also not released. Access to the crash site was limited as leaking fuel from at least one of the tankers caused safety concerns. Renfrew OPP, Renfrew County Paramedics and McNab-Braeside firefighters attended both crashes in windy, hot conditions. The firefighters helped extricate one of the motorists from a vehicle in the noon crash. Noting that traffic volumes and paving projects tend to increase along with the summer weather, police are appealing to motorists to take extra care on the highways, especially when approaching construction zones.

The grand opening of the Elgin Street Farmers’ Market – held on a Saturday for the first time - included a cake-cutting ceremony on May 28. In true small businessperson fashion, the cake doubled as a birthday cake for vendor Claude Dallaire, front left. The owner of Chridomar Gardens and Tasty Treats in Pakenham insists the 39 on the cake is correct. Sarah Macartney, right, grows all her own plants from seedlings, and says the rainy spring hasn’t harmed her business all that much.

The new rules for keeping animals in Arnprior could see cat owners forced to pay a fee similar to what dog owner’s pay. Under consideration is to have both cat and dog owners pay an annual fee starting in 2012 if they don’t register their animals between Jan. 1 and Feb. 28. A current maximum of two dogs and two cats would be maintained; a grandfathering of one additional dog and one additional cat would be allowed. Coun. Lyle Anderson, chairman of the policies, procedures and bylaws advisory committee, said he agrees with having cat owners pay the same as dog owners because bylaw enforcement is spending more time and resources on cat issues. Reeve Walter Stack called animal bylaws an “important issue” that he encountered at the doorstep while campaigning last fall, but stressed the revenue is less important to the town than obtaining accurate numbers. Still, it was Stack who pushed for the annual fee against cats. “A pet’s a pet’s a pet,” he said. “If I have

a dog I have to come in here to deal with it every year. It shouldn’t matter if you have a cat.” Coun. Ted Strike is against revising the bylaw, but didn’t give specific details. “There are too many things I don’t like about this,” he said. “I won’t support it when it comes to council.” However, controversy erupted when the last council discussed the possibility of having bylaw enforcement officials knock on doors to ask how many animals are inside. Currently, the rules include: • Fee for dog tags is $15 for each spayed or neutered dog - $20 for un-spayed or nonneutered dogs. • Fee for dog tags purchased after March 31 each year: $25 for each spayed or neutered dog - $30 for un-spayed or non-neutered dogs (proposed to rise to $30 and $50 respectively). • Dog licenses expire each year on Dec. 31. The proposal was sent back to committee. It will likely be brought back to council for a vote and implementation within the next few weeks.

During budget season Arnprior’s proposed tax increase went from 1.92 per cent to 1.83 per cent to 1.76 per cent. Keep in mind those were ‘proposed’ tax increases. Well, the numbers are in, and while treasurer David Pollard told council at the May 24 meeting that the hike is down from last year, it was pushed back up by rising residential home prices and other factors. In the end, the average homeowner can expect to pay an additional $25 to $30 this year. Pollard explained that the County of Renfrew’s tax rate dropped, as did the boards of education, resulting in a decrease of 4.5 per cent. He talked about a $66 drop in tax, but then added that most people will nevertheless see an increase. “Nothing is simple,” he said, noting that a home in 2010 valued at $181,000 is now valued at $193,000.

Health check clinics to help patients take control Your favourite lottery numbers should not be the only ones you check out on a regular basis. More important is checking out your numbers in managing your health, on a regular basis. Early detection of health warning signs and measuring the changes toward better health is everyone’s personal responsibility. The health care clinics sponsored by Renfrew County Paramedics provide a free service that allows individuals to take charge in being proactive in their own health management. The health check clinics allow you to check on your risk of common ailments, such as heart disease and diabetes and get advice on how to proactively control your health. The paramedics will help check the numbers for you and your family on six important health factors: blood pressure, blood sugar, heart rate, oxygen capacity, temperature and weight. Open to everyone in Renfrew County and beyond, the free clinics will be held at the McNab-Braeside township office 1-3 p.m. on the last Tuesday of every month. On behalf of the township, Mayor Mary Campbell extended gratitude to the paramedics for their initiative. The paramedics are to be commended for their dedication to the people of the area, says Campbell. Their initiatives include the Sunday Stretch and other proactive healthy living activities, an ad hoc visitation program for seniors living at home and residents living with health concerns and these new health check clinics, which will help residents measure and proactively manage their health, says Campbell. All have been grassroots ideas generated within the paramedic corps, says Campbell, and are examples of effective partnership between paramedics and other health care providers. All are supported through paramedic volunteer efforts, she adds. “This is a real milestone for us,” says Campbell. With so many advertising mediums dividing the attention of potential customers, newspapers remain the most effective source for reaching consumers. Why? Simply put, newspapers reach more people, more often. Highly portable and highly visible, newspaper ads go with people and stay with them. That means your business is more likely to be on their minds when they’re in the market for related products or services. When it comes to spending your advertising dollars, make the choice that’s tried and true: newspaper advertising works harder for you.

Wide range of salaries for county council members STEVE NEWMAN steve.newman@metroland.com

Salaries for councillors, reeves and mayors vary widely in the County of Renfrew. That’s according to the County of Renfrew’s remuneration survey of elected municipal officials in 2010. The findings, which were prepared in May, show salaries of council heads for the 17 municipalities of Renfrew County council range from $2,437 for Brudenell, Lyndoch & Raglan to $32,473 for the Town of Petawawa. Their respective mayors are Norm Lentz and Bob Sweet, who is also the warden of Renfrew County. The populations of those municipalities are also the highest and second lowest of the surveyed municipalities, at 9,353 and 1,533. Total salaries and expenses also left Petawawa and Brudenell, Lyndoch & Raglan first and 17th for total mayor’s salary and expenses, at $38,531 and $3,303. Second in line for highest salary (including benefits) for a council head is Mayor Janice Visneskie from Killaloe, Hagarty & Richards, at $31,249. Last year’s mayor for the Town of Arnprior, Terry Gibeau, was third-highest with a salary of $26,913. Completing the list for 2010 were: 4. Renfrew (Sandi Heins), $24,019; 5. Madawaska Valley (John Hildebrandt), $22,000; 6. Laurentian Valley (Jack Wilson), $21,413; 7. Admaston-Bromley (Raye-

Anne Briscoe), $20,649; 8. McNab-Braeside (Mary Campbell) $19,343; 9. Laurentian Hills (Vance Gutzman), $18,785; 10. Deep River (Ann Aikens), $16,559; 11. North Algona Wilberforce (Harold Weckworth), $16,400; 12. Greater Madawaska (Peter Emon), $15,981; 13. Horton (Bob Johnston), $15,789; 14. Whitewater Region (Don Rathwell), $15,258; 15. Bonnechere Valley (Zig Mintha), $14,500; 16. Head, Clara & Maria (Tammy-Lea Stewart), $4,469. In listed populations for the municipalities taken from the AMCTO 2011 Municipal Directory, Head, Clara & Maria has the lowest population, at 232. Highest listed populations, following Petawawa, are Laurentian Valley at 8,801; Arnprior, 7,871; Renfrew, 7,603; and Whitewater, 6,192. When expenses are added to the mayors’ salaries, the first five municipalities are Petawawa, $38,531; Arnprior, $33,830; Killaloe, Hagarty & Richards, $31,249; Renfrew, $25,784; and Madawaska Valley, $25,316. The highest expenses, in order, for 2010 mayors were Greater Madawaska, $7,713; Killaloe, Hagarty & Richards, $6,917; Petawawa, $6,057; and McNabBraeside, $4,894. The mayors of Killaloe, Hagarty & Richards and Laurentian Hills had no invoiced expenses, while Whitewater Region had only $267. Ten of 17 municipalities had a deputy mayor or reeve. Of those 10, Petawawa, McNab-Braeside, Bonnechere Valley and Renfrew mayors’ salaries were ranked

Please find me a home Each week we feature animals from the Arnprior and District Humane Society that are up for adoption.

#3997 Murphy Murphy is a two-year-old neutered hound mix who was brought to the shelter as a stray and never claimed. He is an active dog that will require regular walks and activities to keep him busy. Murphy knows some basic commands but would benefit from more training. Murphy is crate-trained and housebroken. He does not like cats and would be best suited in a home without small children.

#3872 Milo Milo was brought to the shelter in November to find a new home. He is a very friendly cat who loves attention, he is extremely affectionate. Milo has lots of personality, he loves to play and can be silly. He is good with some cats but really prefers his own space. He is curious, outgoing and he loves to explore. Unfortunately Milo must live in a cage while here at the shelter because some of the other cats pick on him. The poor kitty is becoming frustrated with being cooped up all the time. The shelter is willing to reduce the adoption fee for the right home. Milo would make an ideal companion for someone who is home a lot. Please consider giving this handsome cat a chance at a new home.

Pledge sheets for the June 12 Walk in the Park are now available on the shelter’s website www.arnpriorhumanesociety.ca or can be picked up at the shelter (490 Didak Dr., Arnprior) or the Arnprior or Renfrew Pet Valu stores Supplies the shelter needs : paper towels, liquid laundry soap, dog treats and bleach

1-2-3-4 respectively. Their salaries were $18,456, $16,532; $16,139 and $14,495. Lowest was Whitewater Region at $7,298. Horton, which was second lowest at $10,596, no longer has a deputy-reeve. The top payout in councillors’ salaries and expenses ranged from $25,999 in Petawawa to $2,300 in Brudenell, Lyndoch &

Raglan. The County of Renfrew’s human resources department has compiled the survey since the early 2000s. Once done annually, the survey is now conducted every second year, to coincide with the new cycle of four-year municipal terms.

Would-be thieves chased off by homeowner CONST. PETER JEON OTTAWA POLICE SERVICE

An attempted residential break and enter was thwarted in the 3000 section area of Galetta Side Road when a homeowner surprised two would-be robbers and gave them much more than they bargained for. It was mid-afternoon on Thursday, May 26, when the homeowner was dragged from his slumber by the sounds of a ringing doorbell. Looking out of the bedroom window, overlooking the front door, he observed a white van sitting in his driveway and a male in his early 20s standing at the front door. Thinking it was just a solicitor, he decided not to answer it and headed back to bed. No sooner had he crawled back into bed, the doorbell rang several more times followed by the sound of a van firing up. This time when he looked out to see what was going on, he immediately noticed that the van was backed up to his garage and

there were now two males standing outside of his front door. As the realization of what was unfolding before him started to sink in, the distinct sounds of a front door being breached echoed throughout the hallways. Clearly understanding that the dark forces of crime were just about to make their unwelcomed entrance, a call to action was unavoidable. Rushing out a side door, the homeowner conducted an end run and challenged the males. Surprised to say the least, the males leapt out of their skins and hightailed back to the waiting van. Before the robbers could make a getaway out of the driveway, throwing up a wake of gravel and dirt, the homeowner captured the licence plate number and a description of the two white males. A stolen van was later recovered in downtown Ottawa. Remember, crime prevention is everyone’s business – be the eyes and ears in your community and report any suspicious and unusual events to police.

But the many people acquiring them should realize they are potentially dangerous if not protected properly, says local resident Jim Bragg. Bragg pointed out people should ensure they have a screened top on their barrels to

Prior to the trial, he had pleaded guilty to breach of recognizance. Clouthier was charged in relation to incidents in the Arnprior area from 2006 to 2009. Arnprior OPP investigated the case. The identity of the victims, who are minors, are protected by a publication ban. Clouthier will be sentenced later this month. He is already in custody after being convicted of armed robbery of the Becker’s on Madawaska Boulevard.

An Arnprior man has been convicted of several charges related to sexual assaults of minors. John-Paul Clouthier, 47, was found guilty Monday in Pembroke court after a two-week jury trial that had begun May 16. Clouthier was convicted of three counts of sexual assault, two counts of invitation to sexual touching, one count of forceable confinement and one count of obstruction of justice. One charge of sexual assault was withdrawn.

Pembroke-Renfrew County CrimeStoppers and the Arnprior OPP are asking for the public’s assistance in solving a break, enter and theft. During the evening hours March 15 and 16, unidentified person(s) broke into Badham Welding Shop and removed a set of welding torches. The torches were taken to O’Brien Theatre on John Street in Arnprior, where an attempt was made to break into a safe located inside the office. A small amount of cash and confec-

Grab your helmet and get on a bike

Local builders deserve praise To the editor: I just have to give recognition to the incredible home-grown talent that resides in the Arnprior and White Lake Area. We recently had a home built by a wonderful team of men; not just extremely capable, but full of honesty, integrity and uprightness. This is so refreshing when just the opposite is occurring, far too often, in the times we are now living in. As we ventured into the land of pre-home-building jitters, our thoughts were on horror stories of homebuilds gone wrong and television shows to prove it, we came upon Neil Stewart Carpentry. I can’t brag enough about Neil and his keen, goodnatured and hardworking men. If you want a home built to perfection, I suggest you give him a call. Not to mention, the amazing talents of Bruce Fraser Excavating, Troy Saunders Well Drilling, Cunningham Plumbing, KW Electric and Bosa Cabinetry, just to name a few (but the list goes on and on). There is still something to be said about small town local shopping; the service and results are second to none. Thank you, my hat goes off to you! Mrs. Debra Wright White Lake

ummer is here and it is time to enjoy being outdoors. If you are riding your bike to get to work or to simply have fun, make sure you protect your head and by wearing a helmet that fits you properly. Falls can happen even if you are a good cyclist and ride all the time. A number of things can make you crash: a car might cut you off, a dog might run out in front of you, or your tire might hit a crack in the road. Each year, about 1,500 people go to an emergency room in Ottawa because of a cycling injury. Of all sports and recreation activities, cycling is the number one reason people visit the emergency room or are admitted to the hospital. Furthermore, many of these injuries are to the head. In Ottawa, there are about 357 emergency room visits each year because of a head injury from cycling. Head injuries can result in damage to your brain and can even cause death. Brain injury continues to be one of the leading causes of death and disability in North America. It can happen to anyone, young or old, during a variety of activities. Brain injury can have life altering changes on the person injured, and is now recognized to cause significant distress and change for the family and friends of the person injured. Each year over 5,000 children in Canada experience brain injury from bicycle accidents. Brain injury can happen to both genders, young or old, in a variety of settings. Brain injury in Canada is a significant issue, for people with injury, families, friends and others trying to provide their care. The good news is, you can prevent many of these injuries by wearing a helmet. Putting on a helmet and making sure it fits properly is easy to do if you follow the 2V1 rule: your helmet should fit on top of your head with two finger widths between the eyebrows and the top of edge of the helmet; your straps should form a ‘V’ shape right below the ears, which keeps the helmet from moving forward and backward or from side to side; clip the straps together tightly so only one finger fits between the chin and the strap. Everyone under the age of 18 must wear a certified helmet while cycling. Good examples for parents to set is to always wear one, regardless of the trek. Then your children will learn from your good example.

A big success despite the rain To the editor: It rained and rained, but our May 14 Arnprior and District Humane Society yard sale was a huge success, raising just over $1,800 towards the care of all our shelter animals. Even with the sad weather, so many supporters came and found their treasures. Thank you all for coming out! A big thank you goes out to all the people who donated their items so we were able to have a fantastic selection. Also much appreciation and thanks to people who planned, organized and braved the weather: PODS for the storage container. Without it there would be no sale. Gail Mifflin, Brenda Ambrose, Jennifer Smith, Bob Klodt, Heather Seeler. Shirley Forrest (our cash gal), Les, Elaine, Jennifer Hethrington and Cody for hosting the BBQ, Stephanie and the shelter staff. Our super helpers throughout the day: Ed Forrest, Diane Winsor, Larry Ryan, Gerry Cantrell, Keith and Donna Gardner, Karen Swan, and Stephanie Faint. The Red Roof Trading Post for taking much of our leftovers and holding an additional sale.

With postal workers threatening to walk off the job at midnight tonight (Thursday), government agencies have begun to make alternate arrangements for important mail. Renfrew County Ontario Works announced this week that effective June 1 all social assistance cheques are to be picked up at its local offices. If recipients are unable to pick up their chequeS, they should call their Ontario Works Agent, as they will not be mailed. Ontario Works says it is making every effort to ensure recipients receive their payments and benefits at the normal time. Despite the likely mail disruption, Ontario Works stresses recipients are still required to report income and changes to their circumstances. They can pick up and drop off the necessary reporting forms at their local Ontario Works office. For more information, visit the County of Renfrew Ontario Works website at www.countyofrenfrew.on.ca.

Arnprior mother walking to end cancer SHERRY HAAIMA

to the doctor with a backache. After a breast exam during which her doctor discovered a lump, he indicated he was sending her for X-rays and ultrasounds. At first she wasn’t too worried, having had a routine mammogram, but in this case the lump hadn’t been detected during the exam. Butler soon learned she had a non-invasive form of cancer that had, thankfully, been caught early. The news was a shock, however, and came at what was a happy time as her daughter prepared for her upcoming wedding. “I expected this kind of a reality check to come when I was much older, said Butler. As it turned out, she was able to hold back the news until after the wedding, meeting with the surgeon four days after the ceremony. From the kind of cancer she had to the early detection to the fact she did not require chemotherapy or radiation – Butler said she does feel blessed. The health care system took good care of her, she said. “The care I received – I haven’t got one bad thing to say, said Butler. The decision to get involved in the walk for women’s cancers was easy.

Breast cancer survivor Kim Butler is excited and a little nervous about the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers June 4-5. She’s been training for the 60-kilometre, two-day walk since January and has been assured by teammates she’ll have a great time.

“Cancer doesn’t happen to one person, it happens to everybody who loves that person. And Kim Butler of Arnprior knows that all too well. The 53-year-old mother of three grown daughters has a lot to celebrate as she embarks on her first Weekend to End Women’s Cancers 60-kilometre walk this weekend. Although she’s been through a lot since her breast cancer diagnosis last fall, including a mastectomy, she’s feeling pretty lucky, all things considered. “I’m one of the lucky ones, Butler told the Chronicle-Guide earlier this week as she prepared for this weekend’s event. “It got to the point where I had adjusted to the idea of having cancer, said Butler. Telling her family, however, and seeing the pain it caused them was another story. “You can’t undo that, she said. Her husband and children, sister and friends – the disease took its toll on everyone, another reason Butler is so passionate about supporting the cause. Last September Butler went

“After this diagnosis, I decided I wanted to give something back. I have three daughters and the thought that they could face this someday ‌ we need to find the cure,â€? said Butler. And she was struck by how many others are facing the same challenges. “Ever since my diagnosis I have heard from so many people who have had cancer or know someone who has,â€? she said. In Butler’s case, a mammogram didn’t immediately identify the lump and an MRI was needed to pinpoint the problem. “The way I’m looking at it, I’m walking for an MRI machine,â€? she said. She’s heading into the event excited and a little bit nervous. The Weekend to End Women’s Cancers runs over two days - June 4 and 5. Butler was introduced to her 25-member team, named ‘Saving Our Ta-ta’s’ by a coworker . She’s been in training for the event since January and the fundraising has been going very well, with Butlers’ total raised at $5,880, and the Saving Our Ta-ta’s team at $58,410. IAN STUPP Pet Talk

Recently Toronto has seen a few cases of dognapping and although the dogs were returned unharmed and the dognappers arrested, who is really to blame? In both incidents the dogs were taken while their owners were shopping. Why would you leave your beloved pet tied to a pole unattended while you shopped. Would you leave your child tied to a pole unattended while you shopped? Obviously the dognappers are at fault and according to the reports will be charged with several offences. What about the owners? In the case of a child left unattended and consequently kidnapped, I’m sure the children’s aid society and the local police would consider some action against the negligent parent but not in the case of a dognapping. If you have to go shopping or run errands, leave your pet at home. It is way too hot to leave a pet in a parked vehicle in the summer, even in the shade with the windows down, and it is to cold to leave them locked up in the winter. If someone is cruel and crazy enough to take a dog from in front of a busy grocery store in the middle of the day, than what is going to stop someone from taking your pet from a parked car. I’m glad to see the dogs were reunited with their owners, but in the end to some degree the pet owners are just as guilty as the dognappers. The electronic highway is so easy to

access. If you need to look something up, it is just a mouse click away. However, it can also be very dangerous. Often I hear of pet owners seeking advice by way of the Internet and although some of the information may be right, most of it is not. Claims made on the Internet unless substantiated are just opinions. If you want specific advice on pet care, seek out websites that are as reputable as possible, such as the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC), the American Kennel Club (AKC), the Ontario Veterinarian Medical Association (OVMA), etc. These sites can answer your questions or guide you to the answer. Over the years I have heard of a lot of home remedies for everything from getting rid of fleas to removing skunk smell and removing mats. Some have worked, most have failed and there have been a few that had caused great distress to the pet in question. When in doubt, speak to your veterinarian and then you can make an intelligent decision based on fact not fiction, saving you time, money and needless stress to your pet. Use common sense. If it sounds too good to be true or so simple to execute, think twice. Ian owns and operates Wags & Whiskers Pet Grooming and Puppy Kindergarten at 118 John St. North. Sports RINGETTE REGISTRATION

All-Ontario silver medal for Arnprior Pride girls

The Arnprior Pride Major Midget Girls basketball team has brought silver medals home to their community after competing in the All-Ontario Basketball Association playoffs. The team consisted of Shannon Power, Melissa Logan, Bryanna Desarmia and Dana Lascelle, all of Arnprior; Melissa Kargus of White Lake; Cassandra Jaffray and Mackenzie Bahm of West Carleton; Erin Atkinson of Pakenham; and Rachael Van Woezik and Rachel Costello of Almonte. The silver medal for their division was the culmination of several months of hard work. The All-Ontario silver medal follows the recent gold medal performance at the Sacred Heart Invitational tournament in Hamilton. Friday night marked their first victory of the weekend against the Sudbury Lakers, who the Pride beat 38-27. On Saturday, they were victorious in both games,

downing North Toronto Huskies 39-35 and Etobicoke Storm 36-30. After finishing first in their pool with a 3-0 record, the Pride advanced to the semifinals to face the Gladiators from Whitby. The girls played a great team game and as a result came away with 53-44 win to advance to the gold medal game. The Championship game against the North Toronto Huskies was played Sunday afternoon in front of an almost capacity crowd (including two Ottawa GeeGees varsity women players cheering on the ‘local’ team). The final game was a close affair with the two teams exchanging the lead over the first three quarters. After losing the lead late in the third quarter, the Pride fought back. However, they were not able to catch their worthy opponents and fell in the final minutes of the game 45-31. Coach Alan Atkinson thanked the athletes for a great end to the season.

Ted Tozer drives all the way from Ottawa to lawn bowl in Galetta, one of the best turfs in the region, with “very affordable” membership fees. On opening day, May 17, he played against Carp’s Morgan Robinson. She said the annual tournament in Galetta fills up quickly, but the club is welcoming more members to participate.

Lawn bowling club honours founding member

Helen Sadler of Arnprior has been presented with a certificate designating her as an honorary member of the Galetta Lawn Bowling Club. The honour gives Sadler, a former resident of Galetta, full access to the club and its facilities for life. Dave Jefferies, greenskeeper of the Galetta club, presented Sadler with the certificate at the club’s opening pot luck dinner and general meeting. Sadler is one of the founding members of the Galetta Lawn Bowling Club, which opened its gate to the green in 1991. Helen’s late husband, Harold, was the club’s first president. Helen thanked the club’s members for their kindness. At the meeting, president Kin Dillane announced the club’s open house would be on Wednesday, June 1. He said the club will welcome any new members. He stressed all ages are welcome, including those in their teens, and that curlers would find the game similar to their winter sport. Vice-president John Stevenson advised the club would be hosting a novice practicum Friday, July 15 as a first-time event for the Galetta club. The event will be open to any bowler in the district who has bowled five or fewer years. The day will involve skills development exercises in the morning and in the afternoon there will be three six-end games to hone the skills developed. The event will be in addition to the three tournaments regularly hosted by the club.

Hockey Hall at Expo 150

The Hockey Hall of Fame will be on display at Expo 150 and will include some interesting displays and interactive opportunities. The Top Shot Electronic Hockey Net allows participants to shoot pucks at the electronic net with the goal to shoot quickly, accurately and decisively at lit targets. A Shut Out Virtual Goalie has the participant attempt to stop as many pucks as possible from virtual shooters. The Mini Hockey Rink Zone is for younger hockey enthusiasts where players shoot a light foam ball with the goal to score on the opponent’s mini net. And finally, everyone can have their slap shot speed recorded. The Canadian champion Pembroke Lumber Kings will assist with the operation of these displays. The “Hall” part of the event will provide 12 themed displays.

ADHS students to present Midsummer’s Night Dream June 9

Do you believe in fairies? Well you had better start, because on Thursday, June 9, Arnprior District High School Performing Arts presents William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a comedy full of love, mayhem, and magic. The play involves 19 students in roles on the stage and about another dozen with roles behind the scenes. Some have been acting for years and for others this is their first production. For most it is their first performance in a Shakespearean play. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is being directed by two senior students, Amanda Baird and Brendan Edge, who are well acquainted with ADHS Performing Arts. “It all started back in March when Brendan and I put together, with some other students, a scene from Hamlet, filmed it, and submitted it to a contest at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival,” explained Baird, who, as well as directing and choreographing, is playing Titania, Queen of the Fairies in the production. “We found we really liked the text, and the possibilities of what you could do with Shakespeare,” said Edge. “When I started to suggest the

idea of doing a Shakespearean play around school, the reaction was amazingly positive from students and teachers alike. We decided on A Midsummer Night’s Dream, because Amanda loved the idea of being a Fairy Queen and I really liked the idea of playing Puck,” added Edge, who plays both Puck and Lysander in the production. Their version differs from Shakespeare’s original only in that instead of being based in Classical Greece, the locale has been changed to the forests around Quebec City in the 1700s. “We wanted people to be able to connect to it on many levels, including placing it in a recognizable and still romantic place,” the directors explained. Other then that, and a few minor name changes, it’s the same as when Will wrote it 400 years ago. The play is scheduled for one performance only, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 9 in the ADHS Small Gym. Tickets will be available for sale at the door only. From left, top row : Phil Murphy (Oberon), Amanda Baird (Titania), second row: Evelyn Popiel (Hippolyta), Conor Hogan (Theseus), Grace Smith (Egea), middle row: Paul Hrkach (Changelling Boy), Ben Hrkach (Flute), Caroline Popiel (Peaseblossom), Brendan Edge (Puck), Eva Major (Cobweb), Wendy Chennette (Mmd. Quince), Nick Giamblanco (Moth).

NEWSPAPER ADVERTISING has staying power. has selling power.

Giving-circle food bank support grows The Rumbly Tummy Giving Circle is a generous and caring group of families, individuals, schools, and businesses dedicated to the monthly collection of food to assist the Arnprior and District Food Bank. This initiative was the inspiration of Darlene Denis-Friske, husband Kevin, sister Lynda and mom Corrine in February 2010, and was soon joined by many of their friends, neighbours, companies and schools. Among the active supporters are the Arnprior Child and Youth Counseling Centre, The Kenwood Kafe, The Kenwood Corporate Centre, General Electric, Mather Insurance, Ontario Early Years Centre, Cornerstone Dental Group, St. Joseph’s Catholic School and Arnprior

District High School. Over the past year this committed group has donated about 30 grocery bags of canned and dry goods each month to help feed those in need. On May 15, the donation was in excess of 57 bags of groceries and generous cash donations. The Rumbly Tummy Giving Circle meets once a month at the Ontario Early Years Centre to gather/drop off donations, which are then brought to the food bank. The circle invites others who would like to become involved in this dedicated support of the important and vital work of the local food bank. Call Corrine at 613-623-2416 if you would like more information, or, to join.

gineering. During the bridge work, single-lane traffic will be controlled by lights. The Arnprior company’s tender of $604,861, including HST, was approved by county council May 25. The next lowest of 10 bids was $618,110 by Dalcon Enteprises of Ottawa. No other Renfrew County business bid on

An Arnprior firm has won the tender for repair work to Calabogie Bridge, home to the dam at the east end of Calabogie Lake. Replacement of the deck will be done next month, and into September by Corington En-

a three-kilometre stretch from Sunny Hill Road to Kartuzy Road. Their bids were $78,676 and $80,115. Thomas Cavanagh Construction easily won the contract to provide A and B granular for a stretch of Norton Road, near County Road 508 (Calabogie Road). Cavanagh’s bid was $170,065, including HST. The next closest bid was $209,626. Another contract, for asphalt patching and scratch-coat pav-

ing in the county, went to Smiths Construction. Smiths edged out Greenwood Paving $493,610 to $497,940, including HST. County council also agreed that extensive work will be done on Constant Creek bridge near Dacre this year. The one-lane bridge will be replaced by a modular deck costing about $200,000 to $250,000. The bridge will be closed during the work scheduled for mid-July to late August.
