New Tools for Your Bridal Beauty Arsenal A new suite of beauty products by industry leader Murad addresses some of the toughest issues facing bridal skin, including wrinkles, uneven skin tone and dry skin. Founded in 1989 by clinical skincare pioneer Dr. Howard Murad, and based on The Science of Cellular Water, Dr. Murad’s unified theory of health and aging, Murad is the top seller in clinical skincare at stores like Sephora and is sold in 41 countries. Murad’s new Time Release Retinol Concentrate for Deep Wrinkles ($65) features new technology that controls the release of retinol over time for maximum performance while improving the stability and efficacy of the product. It utilizes Encapsulated Retinol which helps reduce sensitivity and irritation to Retinol and it is the first targeted deep wrinkle treatment from Murad, and also the first product to use an anti-bacterial, silicone applicator in the company’s Age Reform line. It is clinically proven to visibly reduce the appearance of deep wrinkles by 45% in 6 weeks, and has the highest retinol content in the Murad line. Encapsulated Retinol releases slowly over time and reduces the appearance of deep wrinkles by increasing cell turnover. Joining the skin rescue team are Matrixyl Synthe’6, a youth-building peptide that helps rebuild damaged collagen to 14 i

plump creases and crow’s feet, and Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramide-3, to attract and maintain essential moisture for a smoother, more youthful appearance. Rapid Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Serum ($60), the next generation formula of Murad’s award-winning Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Gel, targets, treats and prevents pigmentation caused by daily environmental exposure through a unique blend of ingredients. The gold standard in sun and age spot lightening, Hydroquinone, available at the maximum level without a prescription, is married with the powerful skin lightening peptide, Hexapeptide-2, to rapidly correct existing damage and help prevent future skin damage. It is clinically proven to restore clarity and even skin tone by reducing the appearance of sun spots and age spots 33% in 1 week; 88% of study participants saw a more even skin tone in 2 weeks. Ideal for all ages and ethnicities, it also enhances clarity by lifting away unsightly, dark, damaged cells while quickly diminishing age spots, sun spots, freckles and other unwanted pigmentation. Intensive-C Radiance Peel ($49.50) is an anti-aging formula that instantly reveals a more youthful appearance by actively smoothing and illuminating skin. Enhancing radiance while actively reducing hyperpigmentation to restore skin clarity, Intensive-C Radiance Peel is a convenient one-step, athome peel. Ideal for all ages and ethnicities who want an easy to use at-home peel to target and correct hyperpigmentation caused by environmental damage, Intensive-C Radiance Peel utilizes a powerful combination of Glycolic Acid, Vitamin C, Indian Fig and

Myrtle Extract to brighten, smooth and hydrate. Glycolic Acid exfoliates to accelerate turnover of dark damaged cells, removing dullness and improving skin texture, while Vitamin C and Indian Fig protect against free radical damage and enhance skin clarity and luminosity. Murad’s Age-Diffusing Firming Mask ($68) is a rich, at-home skin firming booster that targets dull, dry, lackluster skin by delivering essential moisture. This formula enhances skin elasticity and promotes instant firming to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while helping to improve overall skin health. It features FirmQ2, combining skin tighteners to immediately firm and lift with Golden Seaweed to restore skin resilience, resulting in a youthful glow. Formulated with Brazilian fruit extracts of Java Plum, Mango and Banana Pulp, which promote collagen production to plump skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, along with Shea Butter and trace minerals that replenish hydration leaving skin soft and smooth, AgeDiffusing Firming Mask is designed to increase firmness, erase fine lines and make skin appear more plump and youthful. Through the power of phytoestrogens and firming agents, this regimen booster fights the signs of hormonal aging, improves elasticity, diminishes thinning skin and firms sagging skin to restore natural contours. look. I believe in the constant evolution of my craft and with each project I try to infuse that spirit into my arrangements. Just as important as the quality of the work, having designed my own wedding not too long ago, I am aware of the high standards that brides have and the trust they place in the hands of the designer. AM: Do you work with all budgets, or do you specialize in high-end weddings? PP: I am well aware of the fact that every wedding has a budget and I try my best to come up with the best design within a given budget. This is especially true in today’s economy. Most brides and grooms are paying for their wedding themselves and for that reason I always ask a potential client for their budget. Knowing that is a necessary first step for develop18 i

ing a meaningful design. To answer your question, yes and yes. Everyone has a budget and my crew and I deliver the highest quality of work given that budget. AM: What are some of the hot floral styles in weddings currently? PP: “Nothing is impossible.” This is what I always tell my clients. It is all dependent on what they are envisioning. However, more often clients have been asking for natural shaped arrangements with earthy and soft colors and more low arrangements in three or more settings on the table, rather than the tall centerpieces we are used to seeing. Yet again, there are brides that request specific themed centerpieces that involve unique elements. Design by Panteha, 310 962 0697, designbypanteha.com

Designer Showcase “Candy stations and dessert tables are a big trend and a crowd pleaser: Guests will love to discover new shapes, taste new flavors, and create their own bag to take home. La Dolce Idea designs each table matching the color palette, theme, and the couple’s sweet tooth to create that memorable “wow” factor that guests will love. The fun is guaranteed and guests will be able to pick what they want instead of being stuck with a favor that maybe they don’t like. The table pictured here was designed with a vibrant orange and purple palette. The natural look of manzanita branches (adorning the King’s Table) was the starting point, and we embellished one tree with hanging votive holders filled with orange licorice sticks. An assortment of candy and desserts were provided with the same color combination including cupcakes with light orange frosting, cake pops drizzled with purple icing, lollipops in cone stands wrapped with satin ribbon, and Passion Fruitini, a signature drink made with a pop of hot pink Jelly squares were also a big attraction: they were prepared with orange and purple layers to finish the look. “ Dessert table styling: Sabrina Cadini, La Dolce Idea Weddings and Soirees (Vases and trays; décor elements; descriptive tags; candy; jelly squares). A Feast for the Senses Aroos interviews Amber Yin of Amber Event Production, whose knowledge of lighting and audio is second to none. Aroos Magazine: How did you first get into business? Amber Yin: After attending college at UCLA, I started a business with a friend, called FP Logistics, Inc., that included selling and renting lighting, audio and deejay equipment. Aside from selling and renting, we provided lighting and audio services for corporate, concert

and nightclubs. When I saw an opportunity to expand our lighting services into the wedding industry, I created a subsidiary company that would cater specifically to weddings and special events, in order to showcase the softer, more aesthetically pleasing side of lighting. Amber Event Production now services all types of events, including corporate functions and festivals. Having an understanding in lighting and audio products allowed me to better service my clients and produce large

scale events through resources pertaining to lighting, audio/visual and draping. We have also branched out into the media stream through wedding reality shows, such as My Fair Wedding with David Tutera, I Do Over with Diann Valentine and Tori & Dean: sTORIbook Weddings. AM: What services do you offer couples? AY: Our services include special event lighting, audio reinforcement, video support and draping of all kinds. We offer couples a better Spring 2012 •

solution to incorporating lighting, draping and audio/visual services that will tie everything together in the most impactful way and transform spaces into something they could only dream of. We customize events according to each client’s needs, as well as each venue’s architectural features, being mindful of budget or end all goals. We provide lighting services that are vast and grand and equally parallel that to our sound/visual and draping services. Having all these services under one umbrella has afforded our clients with an optimal solution to maximizing costs spent to services rendered. AM: How do you stand out from the competition? AY: In terms of lighting, we understand that lighting can work as an expression of a couple’s wedding style and should coalesce with the décor in the room, while not neglecting its purposeful intentions; such as lighting up the dance floor for the first dance or lighting up the bar for serving drinks. In terms of sound, we offer a variety of speakers to ensure that the sound quality is clear and crisp as we select from our inventory specific speakers ideal for the guest count, function of the space and venue’s acoustics. With projection screens and projectors to complement and draping to conceal, we can transform spaces into a feast for one’s eyes and ears. Most importantly, we understand that lighting fixtures and speakers are not the most attractive elements within the event space, so we camouflage them to blend into the room’s façade and surroundings. For instance, if an event is an all white affair that requires white lighting fixtures or speakers, our inventory of such elements 34 i

and attention to this detail allows us to hide the mechanics in a more suitable manner that keeps them almost invisible to the naked eye. This allows the equipment to shine on its own, without being an obstruction to the decor and overall look. AM: Do you work with all budgets, or do you specialize in high-end weddings? AY: Because we own a vast number and array of equipment, we can work with most budgets, but specialize in high-end weddings. For weddings with a limited budget,

we try to be as creative as possible when using less equipment to produce a bigger effect. With high-end weddings, we focus on the aesthetics and customize a look that fits the overall design and truly make it interactive with lots of moving elements. We are fit for both types of events and are happy to be a part of so many different weddings. AM: What are some of the hot styles in wedding design? AY: In terms of lighting, current trends include a lot of color by way of color washes permeating throughout the event space in many hues and lots of textures/ patterns by way of gobo projections. The term gobo is used to refer to an object that produces a pattern of light; for example, an image of a tree or simply, a textural design that has been softly focused. Patterns are used to build character and personalize an event. Done appropriately, the intended design will appear natural and not forced. Aside from the traditional elements used in weddings, like uplighting to add dimension to a room, pinspotting to enhance floral centerpieces and spotlighting of the cake or sweetheart table to highlight important aspects, color washes and pattern projections will add depth and life into an event space. While audio/visual will do its expected duty and draping will set the foundation for a blank canvas, lighting will set the tone of the event by painting the room with color and highlighting the key elements that you want to shine! A Good Lawyer: Your Personal Get-Out-of-Jail Card Aroos guest columnist and attorney Christopher K. Jafari informs us that not all crimes need to result in a jail sentence, with a capable attorney at your side. Many of us have played the game of Monopoly where we sometimes win a “Get-Out-of-Jail” card and think, “If only these things existed in real life!” Well, look no further than your local attorney who has the knowledge and experience to get a lot of his or her clients out of jail and into more favorable alternatives. Today, the courts are looking more and more to alternatives to jail. The underlying reason for this is quite simply - it makes economic sense! A jail sentence means the city has to pay thousands of dollars per inmate. It also means that the person who has to serve his or her time in jail will not be able to go to school or work - and this may result in dropping out of school and/or losing their job; and we all have learned especially in these tough times that when unemployment and college drop-outs go up, the economy goes down. Don’t get too excited though, there are limits as to who can actually get no jail time. In most cases, if you haven’t killed, caused any serious harm to anybody, and are a firsttime offender, a good lawyer can work with the judge and district attorneys to get you an alternative to spending time behind bars. In other words, simple crimes such as first-time DUI, drug possession, petty theft, etc. will make it a lot easier for your attorney to keep you out of prison. There are many alternatives to serving a jail sentence, and you will notice that all of these alternatives are made 74 i

to save everybody, both you and the court, a great deal of time and money. The first and most simplistic alternative is home confinement. This is basically the court’s way of saying “you’re grounded”, which means you have to be “confined” in your home.

Most people can’t complain about this sentence, since in essence it also means that you can still surf the web, watch T.V., relax on your comfortable bed and/or sofa, attend to chores, or even work from your home office. One step beyond home confinement is what we call Private Jail. Private Jail, AKA City Jail and/or Pay-PerStay, is very convenient for people who the court deem do not deserve home confinement, but also shouldn’t take up a spot in jail. It’s almost like a hotel where you literally just spend the night and pay a fairly reasonable stay fee per night. Of course, since this is considered a jail, you can’t leave the private jail’s premises until the fol-

lowing morning. It is important to note that private jail means you get to attend to your daily activities such as work and school and simply check-in at night. Although California is known for its abundant and often complex laws, two very important laws act as safe havens out of prison for drug and alcohol abusers. Back in July of 2001, Proposition 36, the Substance Abuse and Crime Prevention Act, went into effect in the state of California. It basically allows the courts to sentence first or second time non-violent drug offenders with receiving substance abuse treatment rather than punishing them. In addition to proposition 36, Penal Code Section 1000 is a means to keep jails from overcrowding and give a second chance to first time drug abusers. With PC 1000, an individual convicted of a non-violent drug crime for the first time can plead guilty, take a 12 week drug and alcohol course, pay a small fee, stay out of trouble with the law for 18 months, and the court will then enter a judgment to dismiss the entire case to give the first-time offender one last chance to stay out of trouble. As you can see, the Get-Out-of-Jail card isn’t just for monopoly. Many first time non-violent offenders will be able to steer clear from jail as long as they have a good attorney who can work with the judge and district attorney to prove that their clients are simply human beings who made an honest mistake and wish to move on with their lives.
