Letter from the Editor Dear Readers, It’s the middle of winter, but you wouldn’t know it from the weather outside! We have just published issue 24 of Aroos Magazine, and we’re now gearing up for our annual wedding show. This year’s show will be the most extravagant we’ve thrown yet - and you know how over the top Navid can be in putting these together! We’ve moved up the road from Irvine to the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza for this year’s show, so plan for a new level of luxe. See page 16 for all the details. We’re also proud to launch our newest columnist, Dr. Amitiss Nasiri-Ansari, a dentist practicing near South Coast Plaza. In her first issue, she will tackle one of the most embarrassing questions a dentist can be asked: What to do about bad breath? We have opted in this issue to feature several of the region’s top invitation and stationery designers, so check them out starting on page 54. Each offers a unique touch to their designs, be it hand-made lettering or jewelry-inspired touches. We are also proud to bring in features with several of the top event designers, which you will find interspersed throughout the magazine. Visit aroosmagazine.com for all the latest, and check us out on Facebook and in the app store. Until the spring, Candice Yacono Editor

Secrets of the Perfect Kiss
By Aroos guest columnist and dentist Amitiss Nasiri-Ansari, DDS Kissing evolved as a way to assess a potential partner’s compatibility, because it allows the exchange of a host of information about health and hormonal status.
mouth. - Sometimes gastrointestinal (stomach) problems or an ulcer can cause bad breath, when you burp and gas is released.
Saliva contains the sex hormone testosterone, which triggers libido—so the more time you spend kissing, the more primed you’ll be for sex, resulting in a more intense sexual experience.
- Reduce upset stomach to ease bad breath; try over-thecounter antacids. If you are milk intolerant and have stomach problems, try a lactase tablet with meals.
There are five common causes of bad breath: - Bacteria breed inside your mouth. These organisms lurk between your teeth and cover your tongue. When bacteria stagnate, they multiply and give off toxins and stinky odors.
- Check your sinuses. Infections can cause bad breath. - Eat yogurt for sweeter breath.
- Deep holes in your tonsils called crypts are common cause of halitosis.
- Bad habits like any types of smoking or chewing tobacco can leave you with a nasty taste and smell in your 38 i

Can you imagine leaning over to give your spouse a kiss, only to see that she or he turns their head away from you because of the way your breath smells?
- Pungent food such as onion, garlic and fish can cause bad breath.
- Brush your teeth and tongue twice a day.
In addition, low carb diets cause ketosis, a fat burning state in the body that produces dragon breath. How to fix the problem:

- See your dentist at least every six months for teeth cleaning and an oral exam. Your dentist can check for cavities and gum disease that causes bad breath. Everything starts with a kiss. Minimalism reigns at this sunshine-filled beach wedding shot by LaBarge Photography. The color scheme of neutrals and a bright pop of orange is punctuated by lilies in the bride’s bouquet, breezy bridesmaid’s dresses, and appetizers that make use of orange peels to luscious effect. Orange petals also fill the bridal procession area, while a simple white canopy avoids gilding the lily of a perfect Pacific day. Mariachi music augmented the ceremony. That evening, lanterns set the stage for a romantic reception around the pool. LaBarge made extensive use of a cabana for their shots of the bride and groom.

Designer Showcase: Laura Hooper Calligraphy Aroos Magazine: How did you get your start?
Laura Hooper: I have always had “neat” handwriting and really enjoyed painting and other artistic ventures when I was younger. When my best friend got married just out of college, she asked me to address her wedding invitations. I slowly started getting more and more personal requests, had earn my degree in business and knew I didn’t want to work in a corporate office job. So I worked at building a client base and incorporated my own business and let things take off from there.
AM: What products and services do you offer?
LH: Laura Hooper Calligraphy is pleased to offer a wide range of calligraphy styles to choose from for invitations, envelope addressing, place cards, escort cards and other printed materials. In addition to calligraphy we offer a couture line of letterpress save-the-dates and invitations. Each set is custom designed and hand-lettered by myself, then printed on eco-friendly cotton papers. Another popular product is our custom maps, which are the perfect addition to any invitation suite and can also be used as save-the-dates or featured in your hotel welcome basket, along with our new corresponding luggage tags. Our maps can be made for any location or designed to complement the specifics of your event. We have also recently started offering event decor pieces such as wood signs, stir sticks, custom napkins and more.
AM: How do you stand out from the competition?
LH: Everything we do at Laura Hooper Calligraphy is custom created. The client is in control of his or her own vision and ideas, and we make them a reality. In addition, much of my work is hand-calligraphed, which gives a very distinct look and feel to your printed materials. Even our invitations that are mass-printed, I hand write the calligraphy and scan it to include in the file. We also only use high quality ink, paper and other eco-friendly materials whenever possible. LH: just hope to be able to continue doing what I love for clients not only in Southern California, but also across the United States and internationally as well. I am proud of what my business has grown into and how much we have expanded beyond just calligraphy. I am looking forward to seeing the continuously changing trends in the wedding industry and how they push all of the wedding businesses into ventures we never would have expected.

Domestic Violence: No Longer Tolerated
By Aroos guest columnist and attorney Christopher K. Jafari A few years ago, I volunteered some time at Mehregan festival for a group called the Keyholders, created by Stop-Gap, a non-profit organization.
an arrest and submit their report for felony or misdemeanor prosecution. Usually when there are signs of injuries, one spouse is headed to jail.
Keybolders consists of honorable Iranian American gentlemen who have pledged to help raise the level of awareness regarding domestic violence in the Persian community, by creating opportunities for education about this compelling issue, standing up against it, and providing support to those affected by it. The level of positive feedback I witnessed from people toward this organization was tremendous.
The biggest misconception my clients have about domestic violence is
The California judicial system has zero tolerance for individuals committing domestic violence. Domestic violence is defined as any incident of threatening behavior, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between people who are or who have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender and sexuality. Firsttime offenders are usually placed on probation, required to serve some jail time or public work service, and complete a batterer’s program or anger management classes. Only the District Attorney can drop the domestic violence charges against you, and this is unlikely to occur. The prosecutor, not the victim, makes the charging decision. The punishment for a charge of domestic violence depends upon the

Domestic violence feeds on ignorance. To fight it, we need to bring it out into the light of public examination. Imposing tough punishment is only one way to prevent this crime. In prevention of violence against women, primary prevention must be based on a cultural norm that violence in the family is unacceptable. It should begin with education at home. The youngest members of our society can learn that “we solve problems with our minds, not our fists”. Armed with facts and courage, we can make a difference by being proactive in our community to end this crime, and reduce the unseen tears of so many people affected by it.
