DRUG COMPANIES DON’T WANT YOU TO DISCOVER THIS SUREFIRE, ALL-NATURAL ALLERGY WEAPON “I had been having problems for the past 3 years with my ears. They appeared to have a fluid build-up and [I] couldn’t get anything to help. I had been to numerous doctors including ear, nose and throat doctors and could not find any answers. [Then] I took D-Hist and for about 3 months now the build-up and dizziness has disappeared! I am purchasing my third bottle –just maintaining with one to two tablets a day. Very happy I found D-Hist advertised by this pharmacy.” –Pamela Haas, Acworth Though you may not have heard of D-HIST before, this natural sensation has been practically CURING people from itchy and watery eyes, runny noses, stuffy heads, sneezing and even the more unbearable symptoms of difficult breathing and wheezing for years. And D-HIST is nothing like those cheap drugs that do nothing but turn your mouth into dry sand while making you feel like someone shot you with a tranquilizer. D-HIST is a SUREFIRE solution for seasonal allergies because it doesn’t just attack your symptoms… it tackles the root cause of allergies which is a weakened immune system. An antibody, known as IgE, is the culprit for your allergies. Its singular mission is to remember what the invading protein (allergen) looks like and attack it each and every time it enters your body. IgE resides on cells in the linings of your nose, sinuses, eyes, and lungs. When IgE encounters an allergen, it signals those cells to release their contents—a chemical known as histamine. To make matters worse, the severity of your allergy symptoms depends on the amount you are exposed to … and allergists predict this will be the worst allergy season in history. Upon release, histamines work very quickly to produce many of the annoying symptoms you experience with seasonal allergies. Anti-histamines are HIT OR MISS in more ways than one. The first problem is that up to 60% of the general population gets ZERO benefit from them because they never even penetrate the mucous producing tissues they claim to support. Secondly, anti-histamines only target histamine, yet allergies are a result of SIX chemical messengers produced during an allergic response. But D-HIST is the PERFECT anti-allergy weapon because its FIVE ingredients “re-program” and build your immune system… while keeping your eyes, sinuses and nose from flooding your body with mucous. These are the PROVEN nutrients that make D-HIST a ground-breaking allergy-buster: *Vitamin C — Shown to block tightening of airways and reduce histamine production. Helps build immune system. *Quercetin — Quercetin’s effect on allergies is UNMATHCED by any other natural substance. It prevents the release of histamine, thus preventing allergic response. It also works as an antioxidant, an anti-inflammatory, and a cell stabilizer. *Stinging Nettle — Stinging Nettle creates an antihistamine effect. It also acts as an anti-asthmatic and antiviral. *Bromelain — A powerful anti-inflammatory and mucous thinner, Bromelain reduces swelling and inflammation. *N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) — NAC breaks down and reduces the thickness of mucous. No other natural supplement is nearly as effective or dependable as NAC. Here’s what our other clients are saying about this blockbuster formula: “We have been more than pleased with the performance of D-Hist during this crazy pollen season. Zero effects from our normal allergen triggers…Great to experience Spring without the sneezing and dripping!” – John Renfroe, Acworth “I have been suffering from allergies my whole life. I have tried all kinds of medications. I tried Natural D-Hist and I feel better than I ever have in my life. I would recommend this product over any other that I have tried.” – Keith, Dallas Are you absolutely tired of deciding whether to drip and drain or be drowsy all day? Are medical bills draining your wallet while you’re clueless of how to (literally) CLEAR YOUR HEAD? This year, you don’t have to roll the dice. So many others in your shoes have discovered how to send their worst allergy symptoms into remission by using NATURAL D-HIST and following our specific advice. If you are certain it’s time to put an end to your or your child’s allergies then ask for NATURAL D-HIST. You will be 100% satisfied by your relief, otherwise simply return the empty bottle for a hassle-free refund. So get NATURAL D-HIST today and enjoy the springtime weather with a clear head. SAVE THE ACWORTH DEPOT WE ALREADY HAVE SEVEN PLEDGES OF THE FIRST TWENTY NEEDED FOR THE JUNE DEADLINE!! We have a pledge campaign called “First Forty $5,000.” In order to meet the first milestone of our Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Acworth, we need to raise $100,000 by June. With this campaign, we are asking for pledges only. If we do not get the necessary number of pledges, this will be the end to our entire campaign and the Acworth Depot will be left to rot where it now sits. If we get the first twenty pledges, they will be called for payment in June and our campaign will move forward and we WILL accomplish the goal. Those who contribute $5000 or more will have their name inscribed on a large beautiful plaque inside the building to be known and recognized now and for generations to come. Save The Acworth GA Depot Foundation is a tax-deductible 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation. Our goal is to disassemble and recreate the beautiful and historic old Acworth Depot to a position alongside the Caboose in downtown Acworth. The restoration of this depot would provide an iconic building of interest for visitors to downtown Acworth. This will be the centerpiece of our downtown and YOU can be a part of it. It will become a static history display with ADA accessible ramps and an elevated walkway alongside the Caboose. If your family name is a part of Acworth History, if your family business had a prominent place in our memories, if you value the historic beauty of our downtown, or if you own a business and would like to contribute to the restoration of a valuable piece of our history, please pledge for our campaign. WE ALREADY HAVE SEVEN PLEDGES OF THE FIRST TWENTY NEEDED FOR THE JUNE DEADLINE!! The City fathers recognize the value of our vision and have offered the space alongside the Caboose (where the depot originally sat). More and more people are recognizing the value of restoring the Depot to our downtown community. JOIN US!!

Your fully tax-deductible donation – in any amount – is welcome and earnestly needed. Your children and grandchildren, your customers and you, will take pride in your joining this effort.

HOW CAN YOU GIVE OR PLEDGE? • Mail or bring a check to: Save the Acworth, GA Depot Foundation 4857 N. Freedom Church: Expect the Unexpected You’ve seen the signs. You’ve passed the building. You’ve seen their efforts in the community. You’ve inevitably met the passionate people who make up the place called Freedom Church. Maybe this is the perfect season to give this church a shot. Something is different about this place and about the people that call Freedom Church home. The energy, passion, and willingness to do whatever it takes to make an impact in both Acworth and now their second campus in Kennesaw is inspiring. Since 2008, the people of Freedom Church have stopped at nothing to make sure that people know about the forgiveness and grace that is available to them through a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Whether it’s distributing thousands of bikes over the years to disadvantaged children, or launching an additional location in Kennesaw (meeting at Palmer Middle School) in January—the people of Freedom have a contagious passion for Jesus and reaching those that are far from God. The results are clear; forgiveness is being offered, relationships are being restored, addictions are being broken, and lives are being changed by the message of Jesus Christ. In the past year alone over 1000 people have given their lives to Christ and nearly 400 took the next step of baptism. In addition, Freedom Church was named the 10th fastest growing church in America during 2014 by Outreach Magazine. While the people of Freedom Church are grateful for what they have experienced in the past, they know that their best days are ahead. They believe that they are just getting started in this community and would love for the people reading this article to come be a part of what is happening in both Acworth and Kennesaw! 20

F irst T ime H ome B uyers As the economy continues to improve more and more people are recovering from the financial hardships caused in 2008. This is also true for companies as unemployment continues to fall here in Cobb County. With that being said a segment of returning home buyers are returning to the market along with first time home buyers. In the mortgage industry we define first time home buyers as anyone who has not owned a home in the last three years. Many first time home buyers are misinformed and are intimidated by the thought of buying a house. Many think that 20% down is required. And, many who are returning to the market, think previous credit issues such as short sales, foreclosures or bankruptcies preclude you from buying a home – this is simply not the case. Fannie and FHA have made significant guideline changes to make buying more obtainable and more affordable.

Jay White

Fannie Mae – Recently lowered their minimum down payment requirement from 5% to 3%. One borrower on the application must not have owned a home in the last three years to qualify for this program. The down payment can be a gift from a family member and minimum contributions of the buyers own money is not required. My Community – Same product as above main difference is this offers lower PMI rates, there are income limits on this product based on median income of the local MSA and the buyer must attend online home ownership counseling. FHA – Lowered the annual mortgage insurance premium from 1.30/1.35 (based on loan to value) to .80/.85 making them more competitive with the Fannie Mae 97% loans. FHA requires 3.5% down minimum and the down payment can be a gift from family as well. Whether you are getting back in the market or thinking about buying your own place and not paying someone else’s mortgage by renting there are programs for you out there to help you buy a home. Jay has been in mortgage lending for 13 years. He currently serves as President of the Acworth Business Association Board of Directors. Jay lives in Acworth with his wife, Jennifer, and their children Dante, Sterling and Enzo. You can reach Jay at (770) 870-0644 or by email at Jay.White@AngelOakHomesLoans.com.

T he A chy B ack All of us have experienced low back pain at one time or another. The lower back is the most common area of pain and injury in the whole spine. The low back bears the burden of carrying the body’s weight making it prone to stress, strain and potential injury. Pain is a warning sign. Like the annoying sound from a smoke alarm, the alarm isn’t the problem. The alarm has a cause, just as every ache or pain has a cause. Some people choose to cover up the pain instead of correcting the cause. The majority of low back pain patients have not experienced any trauma, accidents or major injuries prior to the onset of their problems. The cause of most low back pain is the cumulative effect of improper sitting, poor work habits, incorrect lifting, lack of exercise and other life-related factors.

Dr. Craig Gruber

All of these factors cause stress and imbalances on the spine and eventually pain. This is why people often injure their back by just bending over to pick up a pair of shoes. The spine was already comprised and just the simple act of bending was enough to set off the problem. When this occurs, the surrounding back muscles go into spasm to protect the stressed or injured tissues of the back. For years, I have treated countless number of patients who experienced moderate to severe low back pain. Some are acute while most are chronic. The one thing that is common in all of these patients is that their problems have been there for a long time. There are a few preventative things that will help avoid back pain. First, watch your weight. Extra weight puts pressure on your lower back. Secondly, get more exercise. Regular exercise will ease muscle tension and inflammation. Lastly, the most important preventative thing to do is keep a good posture and get your spine checked regularly. Dr. Craig Gruber is the owner/operator of Discover Chiropractic. He has over 20 years of chiropractic experience and can be reached at (770) 423-9010.

Acworth Police Department Recently, the Acworth Police Department held our 2nd Annual Awards Banquet. Our officers participate in hundreds of community outreach events throughout the year, but this is the sole event in which we are able to take the time for fellowship and to honor the achievements of our officers along with their families. This year, Nicolle Williams from Dogwood Forest reached out to us and offered to host the event at their facility. She also reached out to the community and asked them to help. We were in awe of the outpouring of support that the Acworth community provided. The banquet was beautiful, the food was delicious, childcare was provided for the children, and our officers and staff were able to enjoy a fantastic evening together and celebrate the accomplishments of 2014. This amazing event would not have been possible without the selfless generosity of our Acworth community. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the following organizations which contributed to the success of the evening: Pearl’s Spa, The Silverbach Group, the Acworth Business Association, Lacey Drug Company, the College Planning Institute, Fish Thyme Restaurant, NorthStar Church, Edward Jones, Brookwood Christian Academy, Gabriel’s, Summit Baptist Church, and Georgia Funeral Care. A special thanks also goes out to all the individuals who helped on the night of the banquet by serving food, providing childcare, and making every one of our employees feel special and appreciated: Jay Thomas, Ben and Sylvia Flanagan, Kevin and Kim Wigington, Lee and Amy Gambrell, and of course Nicolle Williams. We were able to honor many of our staff members for their accomplishments, one of which is our most prestigious award: Officer of the Year. Our Officer of the Year for 2014 is Corporal Stephen Bo Jordan. Corporal Jordan was selected by his peers for his actions which led to the apprehension of a known drug dealer who was in possession of two pounds of methamphetamine, as well as more than $10,000 in cash. As a result, the drug dealer received a sentence of 15 years in prison and is no longer a danger to the citizens of Acworth. We also recognized our Officer of the Quarter for the last quarter of 2014, Sergeant Kenneth Hutson. Sergeant Hutson received this award for his work during a call to an armed robbery in progress. Sergeant Hutson led his shift admirably, and he was nominated by one of his officers for his excellent leadership and grace under pressure during a particularly dangerous call. Finally, I would like to recognize Lieutenant Curtis Endicott, who was honored for 20 years of service with the Acworth Police Department. Lieutenant Endicott has served honorably over the past 20 years, and continues to be one of the most integral members of our department. The professionalism that our officers and staff show on a daily basis is evidenced by the support of our community. I am honored to lead this department, and I was humbled by the outpouring of support from our community. We are truly blessed to work and live in a city which is so supportive of its police department. Thank you to everyone who made our 2nd Annual Awards Banquet a huge success!

A Place For You As a leader, business owner and mom in Acworth, I couldn’t turn my back on my fellow women and families in the area as I saw the need for not only physical, but also emotional and spiritual support. I have seen and been the recipient of words spoken to me at the right time that have given me a different perspective on a situation and given me hope through what seemed an impossible situation. It is amazing the power that hope has. It makes the darkest of storms one that will pass and makes the sunshine even brighter with clearer skies. This has been the heart of the AWC. To provide a safe place where people can come in, regardless of their age, economic or cultural background, and find loving, trained individuals who will be there during a storm in their lives. “I think I may be pregnant,” is softly muttered, but the fear and anxiety loudly speak through the phone as she makes an appointment to come in. This is why we are here, not only to talk, but also to provide life-saving services that will impact her for a lifetime. It is a ministry of life and love. Why love? Because fear is the number one hindrance we see every day. Fear of loneliness, lack of approval, acceptance, time, failure, the future, etc. FEAR — False Evidence Appearing Real— will drive you to make decisions that will lead to death, not life. “No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us.” 1John 4:12 “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear.” 1 John 4:18 We started with a dream and a handful of people who met around a dinner table. The Acworth Women’s Center (AWC) is from the community, to the community. The AWC is looking for individuals, businesses and organizations that want to make a difference in the life of women and children that will impact the generations to come, and will commit to being monthly supporters. Will you partner with us today?

The AWC is a free community-based non-profit (501c3) medical clinic dedicated to providing caring, trustworthy, support to women and their families facing crisis pregnancies understand their options while promoting life-affirming choices and faith-based support. We are 100% privately funded by donors and supporters like you.

“In 2014, The American Legion conducted a survey of more than 3,000 veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or traumatic brain injury (TBI). The results were shocking. Nearly 60 percent of respondents felt no improvement as a result of their VA treatment plans. Another 30 percent said they terminated their plans because they did not work. This is not effective treatment. Through countless interactions with veterans and families who deal with PTSD and TBI every day, The American Legion knows that no two cases are the same. No magic pill is going to heal these wounds. Different treatments, some of which are not recognized by VA, have to be provided. Not just pills. Alternative therapies provide more than hope. They provide real solutions for veterans and their families. Right now, however, the dominant treatment program is drug-based. In the next few years, 1.5 million service members will discharge, up to a third of whom will deal with PTSD. Our nation must prepare for them with something more, and more effective, than another prescription. Improved treatment for PTSD, TBI and Military Sexual Trauma are among the key issues identified in The American Legion’s Legislative Priorities for the 114th Congress. Once again, The American Legion is taking the lead on critical issues facing veterans. North Cobb Post 304 is addressing this issue headon. On May 2, 2015, North Cobb Post 304 will hold the “Combating PTSD” motorcycle “Poker Run.” The funds raised will be used to train a service dog for a veteran suffering from PTSD. We have partnered with Sharon Callan, of the not-for-profit, “Paws Be Good 4 U,” to do the training. The cost to the veteran will be absolutely zero. You can help us provide this alternative therapy by participating in the run if you are a “biker” or you can sponsor a mile of the course. Sponsorships are: Gold $100, Silver $75 and Bronze $25. For more information or to sponsor, please visit www.Post304.org or email combatingPTSD@post304.org. Take time to contact your elected representative and push for alternative therapies for PTSD and TBI from the VA. It’s the least we can do for this generation of new veterans. Please consider following the example set by the Georgia Trade School and partner with Post 304.

ace l P o N s ’ e r h! t r The o w c A e k i L by Kaci Pollack

Born right here in Acworth, at Kennestone Hospital, Steve Biddy has lived in Acworth his whole life and has truly enjoyed every minute of it. His mother and father, Clarence and Sarah Biddy are both Acworth natives as well and could not have chosen a better place to stay and raise their son. As a child in Acworth, Steve attended Acworth Elementary School, followed by middle school at Awtrey and then high school at North Cobb. At this time, Acworth Elementary School still included 6th grade and Awtrey just had 7th and 8th grades; however, the year after Steve finished 6th grade at Acworth Elementary, they switched to having middle school include 6th grade as well. Steve then went on to graduate from North Cobb High School in 1976. This was also the time when North Cobb was the only high school to service both Acworth and Kennesaw – before the other high schools opened that we have in the area today. Steve worked several other odd jobs after school in the evenings, including working at the warehouse for Allen’s 5 & 10 cent store and washing cars at Day’s Chevrolet. After high school, he worked for the Cobb County Water Authority. Steve finally found a business he wanted to really dive into though, in 1984, and that was when he opened Georgia Cooler and Equipment Inc. Georgia Cooler specializes in commercial walk-in coolers for businesses and restaurants. This business has thrived in our community and has now been open for just over 30 years! Georgia Cooler’s first location was in downtown Acworth, across the railroad tracks where Edward Jones is currently. But, in 1993, Steve realized they had outgrown this location so Georgia Cooler moved to their current location on Highway 293 – still here in Acworth. It is no surprise that Steve has owned and operated a very successful business as an adult, because as a kid growing up in Acworth, he was always on the search for ways to make a good, clean dollar. He was raised on Robinson Street, so he was very close to downtown Acworth. He would collect glass Coke bottles and then take them up to Burger’s Fruit Stand on Main 42

Steve B i ddy Street to sell them for 5 cents a piece. Steve also had about fifteen lawns in the community that he mowed as a way to make some extra money. Even further, Steve’s mom also worked at Allen’s 5 & 10, so Steve would walk there after school and try to help out around the store. They used to put him to work doing any and everything! He even worked on making Easter baskets from time to time! Steve’s favorite part of helping at Allen’s, however, was when he got to ring people up at the candy counter. He loved getting to push the buttons on the old-time push button cash register! Also, stores like Allen’s still used wooden shelves and things would often easy get swept underneath them. So, getting creative and wanting to make money, Steve would take a yard stick and rake out all of the loose change from under the shelves! When he wasn’t busy finding ways to make a buck, Steve stayed plenty busy here in Acworth. He and his buddies would do all sorts of things, like fish and play outside. They did whatever they could to be outside, riding bikes or just running around. In 1969, he got a mini-bike and two years later, a gocart. He had a blast riding around the streets of Acworth and actually, he still has both of them today! Steve and his friends also spent a lot of time hanging out at Acworth Beach. The big attraction at the beach around this time was an old vintage elephant slide that they had. They also had a cool MerryGo-Round and a swing set that were popular for the kids to play on. Once Steve and his friends were able to drive, “cruising” became the big, most popular thing to do. There used to be a red light where Henry’s is today, and they would drive up and down Main Street – only stopping occasionally to jump out and talk with other friends. Steve drove a 1974 Trans Am that he loved spending time riding around Acworth. He just had a great time hanging out around town! Additionally, there were a lot of “Acworth Landmarks” that Steve remembers seeing while he was growing up. At this time, the old Acworth Train Depot was still in town and there was a Burger Chief that he and his buddies would go to for a bite to eat. He also remembers places like Lacey’s Drug Store and Dr. Cauble’s

he has definitely experienced the many changes office. In fact, Dr. Cauble was his family doctor, and large growth that our city has seen. Steve but when you needed him, you didn’t have to never imagined that Acworth would become make an appointment – you just go in and have a what it is today. He grew up here during a time seat and wait your turn to be seen – very different when there was a much smaller population and from how doctor’s appointments are today! Other you knew people everywhere you went. You places in town included a hardware store where could also practically pull out on Main Street Center Street Tavern is now, Green’s Department without even having to look – he even used to Store, Sam’s Barber Shop, a Western Auto Store, be able to ride his lawn mower from house to and of course, Eaton’s Department Store. Steve’s house right down the street! It was also rare mom used to buy his clothes from Eaton’s and that you would see a lot cars driving up and Steve even remembers going into Eaton’s to down Cobb Parkway/Highway 41. Steve has buy dress shoes for his high school graduation! always said that he grew up in Acworth during Behind Henry’s, was the fabric center and behind the best times – the 60s, 70s and 80s. Life was that, where City Hall is now, was a bank – it was just calm, relaxed and good! the first bank that Steve ever went to! This is the same area where the old Acworth jail was located. Now, Steve is looking forward to retiring The Acworth Police Department only had three sooner than later and enjoys cars – they have definitely traveling as well, and is grown since then! There is one excited about doing more of police officer in particular that that in the future. No matter Steve remembers. His name where he travels though, the was Sergeant Beavers, he was memories and good times had well liked and respected by in Acworth will always bring everyone in town. There was him back home. Steve said one time that he gave Steve a himself, there’s no place like red seal five dollar bill that he home and you know what that still has to this day, along with means…There’s No Place a memory that will stick with Like Acworth. him forever! Effective Treatment for Your “Gummy Smile” Many people possess a “gummy smile,” which is a display of gum tissue above your teeth when you smile. A typical smile does not reveal gum tissue above the teeth because the upper lip extends down just below the top of your teeth and covers the gum tissue. The amount of gum tissue displayed in a “gummy smile” can range from several millimeters to one-half inch. If you are concerned by a gummy smile” or feel your teeth look too small, you may want to consider an effective treatment option termed “crown lengthening.” This is a cosmetic dental procedure that can re-contour the top of your gum tissue in order to effectively create longer looking teeth and simultaneously reduce the amount of gum tissue being displayed when you smile. Crown lengthening procedures have been performed for years to contend with gum disease, but it has been adopted into the world of cosmetic dentistry because it can unveil teeth hidden under the gums with instant patient satisfaction. Crown lengthening is a periodontal surgery treatment that involves removing excess gum tissue, and possibly some bone, around the upper teeth to make them look longer. It is a common procedure performed by dentists and periodontists (gum surgeons). Crown lengthening can be performed to sculpt gum tissue when the gum line is uneven. It also can be performed for dental care, such as a fracture below the gum line requiring crown lengthening to reduce bone level around the tooth to allow access to the fractured root area for a crown. Crown lengthening involves oral surgery performed under local anesthesia and takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour. Once the area is numb, the dentist uses a scalpel or an electro-surgery unit to remove unneeded gum tissue. Very often with “gummy smiles,” there is excess bone bulging under the gum tissue, which predicates the need to lift the gums by surgery, flatten the bone to create a normal contour and then replace the gums. The outcome is teeth with normal length, less gum display and a normal appearing bone above the teeth.

Unlike many dental procedures, crown lengthening only needs to be done one time with no touch-ups required later. After crown lengthening, more tooth structure is exposed for brushing and flossing, which can reduce the risk of tooth decay. Patients that possess large “gummy smiles” may require more advanced care. At one level, crown lengthening may require exposing the roots of front teeth by design and then adding crowns on them to protect the roots and generate a beautiful smile. At an even more advanced level, with very significant gum display, elective jaw surgery could be required to eliminate the “gummy smile” by repositioning the jaw into a new position, fixating the bones together and then letting them heal. If you have excessive or uneven gums, crown lengthening can transform your smile and provide you just the right look – and as a bonus, it may just improve your overall dental health. Say Hello to Jello Did you know that, in the 15th Century, gelatin was considered to be a symbol of wealth? Back then, gelatin was used as a protein source. It wasn’t until 1845 that the first patent for “dessert gelatin” powder was obtained, but don’t get too excited – it was flavorless and used for jams, jellies, etc. The first true granulated gelatin powder that we know, and love today, didn’t come along until 1899.

Tiffany Hughes

I don’t know about you, but I consider jello to be one of my essential survival supplies. And by “survival,” I mean that I keep it on hand for occasions I need to whip up a dessert on the spur of the moment. Granted, we all have mixed packets of gelatin with water and poured it into a popsicle mold, but have you ever tried mixing a liquid, other than water, into it? Think about orange juice combined with strawberry jello for strawberry orange popsicles, or try white grape juice mixed with pineapple jello. These tasty flavor combinations are great as popsicles or even better, poured into ice cube trays and served with lemonade, tea or even an adult beverage. Another idea for jello, in liquid form, is to moisten cakes. Bake your favorite flavor of sheet cake and as soon as you take it out of the oven, poke holes in the top of the cake. Mix an entire box of jello with one cup of boiling water, then pour across the top of the cake. Refrigerate until the jello firms up, then add your favorite topping. Whipped topping mixed with pudding or even coconut is great. The flavor combinations are endless – think butter cake with strawberry jello, white cake with blueberry jello, strawberry cake with pineapple jello, etc. You can add another level of flavor by mixing coconut into the jello or spreading frozen strawberries across the cake before adding the topping. Jello can also be added to whipped topping, poured into a graham cracker crust, and then frozen, for an easy, summertime dessert. This combination, minus the graham cracker crumbs, also makes great popsicles. Jello can also be added to batters, such as cake or pancake, for an intense flavor addition. Try starting with just a couple tablespoons at a time until you reach the flavor profile you want. So, the next time you’re digging around in your cabinet for a dessert idea, don’t overlook the box of jello in the back. The possibilities it provides just might surprise you. Happy cooking everyone! There is a story in the Bible about a kid who couldn’t talk, would constantly fall on the ground, foamed at the mouth, gnashed his teeth, and would become completely stiff (and you thought your kids were crazy). Jesus is approached about healing this boy and utters something profound, “Bring him to me!”

J. R. Lee

Obviously, the people followed Jesus’ instructions. Now, it’s the boy and Jesus face to face. That is until “he fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.” The dad was mortified and Jesus’ response was classic: “How long has this been happening to him?” The father responds and then throws in one last line that you will resonate with as much as I have over the years. He said, “If You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” I don’t know if you are the praying type or not, but if you are, then this probably sounds all too familiar. Sometimes our situations seem impossible. Sometimes life spins out of control. It’s moments like these when we start throwing up, “Lord, if you can...” type prayers. Listen to Jesus’ response: Then Jesus said to him, “‘If You can’? Everything is possible to the one who believes.” Wow. It’s like Jesus is reminding that father, as well as you and me… I’ve healed the blind. I’ve cured the sick. I’ve raised the dead. IF I CAN? My love never changes. My word is enough. My grace is sufficient. IF I CAN? Death couldn’t stop me and the grave couldn’t hold me. IF I CAN? Once Jesus gave that little reminder, read what happened next… But Jesus, taking him by the hand, raised him, and he stood up. I believe that’s what He desires to do for you and for all those who live in our community! Is your marriage struggling? Is your past catching up with you? Have you been running from God? No matter where you are or where you have been, Jesus can take you by the hand and lift you up! That’s exactly what He wants to do in your life today. It might sound too good to be true, but let me assure you of this… He Can! J.R. Lee is the Pastor of Freedom Church, located at 3611 Cobb Parkway in Acworth.
