The city offers several programs that include day trips, exercise classes, monthly luncheons and much more! Give our Parks, Recreation, and Community Resource Department a call today and see how you can get active! Farmer’s Market. Each Friday through October 25, local farmers will have fresh Georgia grown vegetables, plants, baked pies, cakes, jams and much more from which to choose. Which Of These Neuropathy Symptoms Do You Suffer from? If You Suffer From A Single One Of These Torturous Symptoms – Numbness, Tingling, Or Sharp Nerve Pain – THEN THE FACTS BELOW MAY BE THE MOST IMPORTANT YOU HAVE EVER READ IN YOUR LIFE Neuropathy affects every part of your life -walking, sitting, and even sleeping. Maybe you’ve had multiple tests, only to find out no one has any idea what you have. Maybe you’ve even been put on a drug with heavy side effects.
Do you have any of the following symptoms... • • • • •
Pins and needles feeling Numbness in the hands or feet Tingling or burning sensations Weakness in the arms or legs Sharp shooting or burning pains
If so you may have a condition called peripheral neuropathy. My name is Dr. Amy Valente, and I’ve been helping people with neuropathy and nerve problems for years. More than 20 million Americans suffer from peripheral neuropathy, a problem caused by damage to the nerves that supply your arms and legs. This painful condition interferes with your body’s ability to transmit messages to your muscles, skin, joints, or internal organs. If ignored or mistreated, neuropathy can lead to irreversible health conditions. Why not get help by those trained to correct the major cause of peripheral neuropathy? Data from the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners’ Job Analysis of Chiropractic lists arm and leg neuropathy as the second most common nerve problem treated by chiropractors. Often neuropathy is caused by a degenerating spine pressing on the nerve roots. This can happen in any of the vertebral joints from the neck all the way down to the tail bone. The Single Most Important Solution To Your Neuropathy
By using gentle techniques, I’m able to release the pressure that has built up on the nerve. This allows the nerve to heal and the symptoms to go away. Listen to what some of our patients have to say about it: “Low back pain and leg numbness was what originally brought me to the office. Before my care here, I wasn’t able to hold my son for longer than a minute, but now I can hold him and play with him more often. I can walk with no problems or assistance and my wife is especially happy that I can spend time with the family. The atmosphere has really added to the experience because the staff helped me to get better through their care and friendliness.!” Thanks-John Ratledge “Pain and numbness on my left side originally brought me into the office. Now that I am receiving care I have the ability to feel hot and cold in my left hand which I could not do before. I have decreased pain and increased feeling on my left side. What amazed me the most about chiropractic care is feeling more improvements than through medications.” Thanks again, Shannon Dillard How To Find Out If This Will Work For You It’s time for you to find out if chiropractic will be your neuropathy solution. For 14 days only, $20 will get you all the services I normally charge new patients $250 for! What does this offer include? Everything. Take a look at what you will receive: • An in-depth consultation about your health and well-being where I will listen…really listen…to the details of your case. • A complete neuromuscular examination. • A full set of specialized x-rays to determine if a spinal problem is contributing to your pain or symptoms… (NOTE: These would normally
Dr. Amy Valente
cost you at least $100). • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can start mapping out your plan to being pain free. • You’ll get to see everything first hand and find out if this amazing treatment will be your pain solution, like it has been for so many other patients. The appointment will not take long at all. And you won’t be sitting in a waiting room all day either. Here’s What To Do Now The offer is only good until July 15th. Call today 678-574-5678 and we can get you scheduled for your consultation, exam and x-rays as soon as there’s an opening. Our office is located at 3451 Cobb Pkwy Suite 4. Acworth, GA 30101 (on the corner of Mars Hill and 41). When you call, tell the receptionist you’d like to come in for the Neuropathy Evaluation so she can get you on the schedule and make sure you receive proper credit for this special offer. Sincerely, Amy Valente, D.C P.S. At our office, we have specialized treatment programs for treating patients who suffer from neuropathy. Why suffer with years of misery? That’s no way to live, not when there could be an easy solution to your problem. Don’t live in pain when we may have the solution you’ve been looking for all along.

Community Spotlight.... by Cynthia Regalla Ann Fillingim, born in Gainesville, Florida, was one of the many teachers to retire in the Cobb County this year. With 23 years of teaching experience, Ann has seen technology evolve tremendously. Computers now have made grade-keeping, lesson-planning, home/school communication and acquiring resources much easier. Ann was destined to teach, and knew she would do so by the time she was in second grade. After graduating from the University of West Florida in Pensacola, with a BA in Elementary Education, she taught 4th grade before moving with her husband to Ft. Worth, TX. There, she was a substitute teacher for one year and taught in a Catholic school for another. After focusing on raising her children in Texas, she returned to teaching elementary school. Once relocating to Georgia, she was nominated for teacher of the year and even taught EIP. After 9 years, she ended up teaching fourth grade at Ford Elementary in Acworth. Storytelling is what Mrs. Fillingim was best known for in the classroom. She used stores to enhance her students’ learning experience. She also
Ann Fillingim learned that as a teacher you need patience, a sense of humor, a love for children, creativity and a desire to learn new things daily. The single best decision of her life, second to accepting Jesus Christ, was marrying her husband Larry, nearly 40 years ago. He is a wonderful husband and terrific father. With his humor, love and encouragement he makes every day a good day. What is your teaching philosophy? Everyone can learn. The challenge is to motivate and engage them. What do you think is the biggest challenge for a teacher in the classroom? What can parents do to help? The biggest challenge is to meet all the different needs of all the different children. Differentiation is ideal, but it is a hard goal to reach with the student/teacher ratio so high. At the end of the day, there always seems to be a child who did not receive the attention he/she needed. That fact can lessen the joy of any accomplishment made in class that day. Parents can help by reviewing any homework or classwork at home and providing help and encouragement in the areas of difficulty. Staying informed as to how their child is progressing is a must. What was the most gratifying experience in your career as an educator? Restoring a child’s confidence in himself and his contribution to the class. On several occasions, I’ve seen shy, withdrawn students begin to trust and confide in me and become active, contributing classmates. It was gratifying to see the change 18

and to have their parents acknowledge and affirm the change. You have started a new chapter in your book of life. Share a little about what is next for you. Well, I hope for a while to NOT get up at 5:30 a.m. regularly. I plan to have some lunches with my husband and spend more time with my adult children and aging parents. I want to do some volunteering at the hospital and minister to others as we were ministered to during some hospital stays in our past. I would also like to put my house in better order than it’s been in a long time. For the last few years, I have toyed with the idea of doing some writing. A few years ago, my dad wrote the history of his life from birth to the present, including childhood experiences at school, home and church, joining the Navy, flight training, flying torpedo bombers in WWII, plane crashes, experiences aboard aircraft carriers and in foreign countries, meeting and marrying mom, life decisions, etc. He had copies made and given to mom and each of us four children. What a treasure that was, since we had been begging him for years to record some of his stories from “The Greatest Generation”! I’ve thought of taking some of those experiences and writing a children’s book. It’s been on my mind for several years. We’ll see what the future holds. Since Ann has retired, she enjoys reading, crocheting, watching the news, attending church and hanging with friends and family. Ann and Larry have 3 grown children: Andrew, 35, who is the Middle School Minister at Roswell Street Baptist Church, Brian, 30, who is Minister of Education at Harmony Baptist Church and Laura, 29, who teaches high school math in Madison, Wisconsin where her husband is working on his PhD.

daunting task. Even if our insurance limits our choices, there is still a choice. Expertise, convenience in location, hours and friendliness of staff all play an important role in this decision, whether it’s for a primary physician or a specialist. And for those of us with animals, choosing a veterinarian can be just as difficult. We are fortunate, as residents of Acworth, because our choices for medical and veterinarian care are abundant, which is why Acworth Community Magazine is featuring several physicians and specialists in this special section, Local Doctors to Know. The following pages will introduce you not only to the practices but the physicians who make up the practices.

Dr. Erin Arnold & Dr. Amy Valente
orth Cobb Spine and Nerve Institute prides itself on the fact that they are a Christ centered Chiropractic office whose ministry is to serve the community in any way that they can. Their passion is to help people get back to living their life to the fullest potential. “Our doctors
and staff truly enjoy what we do!” Dr. Arnold and Dr. Valente started their practice together 6 years ago. Dr. Erin Arnold received her Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Life University and Dr. Amy Valente holds a Bachelor of Science from Excelsior College and a Doctor of Chiropractic also from Life University. The services at North Cobb Spine and Nerve Institute include chiropractic care for personal injury cases and family chiropractic care. However, they specialize in treating patients with peripheral neuropathy, herniated discs and spinal degeneration, all without the use of medication or invasive surgery. With advanced technology, these treatments have shown excellent results. The doctors have seen excellent results which include but are not limited to: elimination of burning pain in hands and feet, increased balance and improvement with walking and standing and overall better quality of life. Because of these services, several patients have been able to eliminate the need for Neurotin, Lyrica and some other on-going medications for neuropathy. Dr. Arnold and Dr. Valente are also proud of the fact they have been told by numerous patients that they appreciate the doctor’s dedication to hearing their patients concerns and taking the time to figure out the underlying causes of their conditions. They feel they have a very unique practice because they look at their patients as individuals rather than just another chart in the door. Both doctors wanted a profession that would allow them to serve their community in a way that would get people healthy and make that a way of life for others. Dr. Arnold chose the chiropractic path because she used to suffer from horrible migraines that were affecting her job and several other aspects of her day to day life. She began seeking chiropractic care and now, no longer suffers from these migraines. When Dr. Valente was younger, she worked in a chiropractic office and witnessed the amazing benefits of chiropractic care. As a result, she became so passionate about it that she decided to further her education and has been helping heal people ever since. 22

favorite statement of our staff is ‘People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care!’” said Dr. Glenn Reese of Family and Cosmetic Dentistry. “We strive to make your visits to our office Dr. Glenn Reese & Dr. Ryan Smith relaxed and educational. We treat you like a member of our family – not just another patient,” he continued. “We take a personal approach to our patients and their care, and we stress prevention, education and long-term success.” Family and Cosmetic Dentistry offers high quality dental care for the entire family as well as a myriad of cosmetic dental treatments. Services range from routine general dentistry, to full mouth rehabilitation and implants. “Your treatment will be determined by your individual conditions, your individual goals and expectations,” stated Dr. Reese. On the cosmetic side of Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, you can choose from a wide variety of services as well; bleaching, bonding, veneers, crowns, bridges and more. Family and Cosmetic Dentistry also offers high-tech Zoom whitening, mini-implants, digitized x-rays, and the use of intra-oral cameras to aid in diagnosis and education. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) as well as other sedation options are available to make your visits more enjoyable. Dr. Reese received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Georgia, Magna Cum Laude and his D.M.D from Medical College of Georgia. After receiving his degree, Dr. Reese also went on to serve in the United States Air Force Dental Corps. When asked why he chose dentistry as his specialty, Dr. Reese shared that his choice was a result of both his “poor dental care as a child” and his “desire to make a difference in not only patients dental health but also their overall emotional and physical health – improving smiles and improving self-esteem.” Dr. Reese chose Acworth as the home for Family and Cosmetic Dentistry because of the proximity to his family, its convenient Metro-Atlanta location and the “vibrant economy” of the city. Dr. Reese is also very involved within the Acworth community outside of his practice. He is a current member and the past president of the North Cobb Rotary Club and a member of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. He is also a member of the American Dental Association, the Georgia Dental Association and the American Dental Implant Association. Dr. Reese and his wife, Kennedy, have two sons, Hunter, a junior at the University of Tennessee, and Jaryd, a freshman at Jacksonville State University. Both are on tennis scholarships.
Family and Cosmetic Dentistry would also like to introduce Dr. Ryan Smith, a new addition to their practice two days a week. Dr. Smith graduated from Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine, Magna Cum Laude, after receiving his Bachelor of Science from The University of Georgia. A Georgia native, Dr. Smith recently moved to Kennesaw with his wife and nine month old son, after completing a general practice residency in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Smith has a special interest in implant dentistry and implant supported dentures. Outside of the office, Dr. Smith enjoys spending time with his family, participating in sports and attending community activities. Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is proud to say that as a courtesy to their valued patients, they file for most dental insurance plans. They also accept all major credit cards and care credit. r. Dylan Reach and his practice, Acworth Family Eyecare, provides comprehensive eye care for every member of your family, from the very young to the elderly. “We pride ourselves in providing top quality eye care in a relaxed and welcoming environment,” stated Dr. Reach. Acworth Family Eyecare offers comprehensive eye exams, vision therapy, treatment of eye disease and injury, glasses and the latest technology in contact lenses. “Many eye diseases including Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, dry eye, cataracts and Glaucoma can be treated more effectively if discovered and treated early,” noted Dr. Reach. The practice also performs refractive surgery consultations and pre/post operative care. Dr. Reach completed his undergraduate degree at Valdosta State University and received his doctorate at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis. “I went into Optometry because as an Optometrist, you are able to interact with a variety of patients every day, improving their vision and therefore, quality of life. Helping children see clearly for the first time is a wonderful feeling and for many, life changing,” remarked Dr. Reach. Dr. Julie Poteet received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Georgia and her doctorate from the New England College of Optometry. Dr. Poteet joined the practice in 2009 and her special interests include nutrition and eye health and pediatric eyecare. She also has a special interest in autism research. Acworth Family Eyecare offers state of the art diagnostic tools, including the Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT), which provides a detailed scan of the retina and optic nerve. This is the latest technology in detecting and monitoring Glaucoma, as well as retinal disease from diabetes, hypertension and macular degeneration. “Damage from Glaucoma always is preceded by loss and thinning of the nerve fiber layer. By utilizing the OCT, we can quickly diagnose patients who may be at risk, and if Glaucoma is diagnosed early, the chance of serious visual damage may be reduced,” Dr. Reach noted. Another tool is digital retinal photography, which allows accurate documentation of changes in eye health. 24

Twelve medical specialties are represented in the Health Park featuring 10 WellStar Medical Group practices including many primary care physicians; family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics and OB/GYN. Other specialties include cardiology, pulmonary medicine, ENT, orthopaedics, gastroenterology, hand surgery and general surgery. In addition to providing clinical services, the WellStar Acworth Health Park targets community wellness by providing services such as wellness, prevention, community education, chronic disease management, complementary medicine, screening and fitness. We believe that this innovative service model ultimately will improve healthcare access and convenience for the communities we serve, including our neighbors in Acworth and the surrounding area. 26

The WellStar Pharmacy Network provides friendly on-site prescription and pharmaceutical compounding services. The pharmacy sells popular OTC remedies, a selection of supplements, vitamins and herbals, light durable medical equipment and a full line of specialty compression hosiery. Additionally, the pharmacy offers compounding for those hard to find products.
Economic Boost for Acworth Area The Acworth Health Park is planned as a multi-phased development. The Phase One community investment, as described above, amounts to $29 million and is an important component of the WellStar five-year capital plan. Affordability of services, bundling of services and economies of scale are all being considered at the Health Parks. WellStar continues on a strategic course of providing comprehensive, highquality, convenient and easily accessible community-based outpatient healthcare to the residents of the communities we serve. Facilities like the Acworth Health Park provide an example of the system’s commitment to service innovation and WellStar broke ground on a second health park, the WellStar East Cobb Health Park, in April 2013. The Health Park will be located at 3747 Roswell Road in Marietta and will include a wide array of comprehensive medical diagnostic testing services including medical imaging, breast intervention, lab, preadmission testing, cardiac services and sleep. taying active is important. However, if you get sidelined by pain or injury, recovery becomes the priority. Georgia Sports and Pain Physicians is a non surgical clinic designed to handle acute and chronic pain, treating the patient as a whole, not a body part.
Patients can expect to be listened to and have their pain be treated at the source, Dr. Timothy Shelton non-surgically if possible. “We take the time to accurately pinpoint the source of an ailment,” said Dr. Timothy Shelton. “We then design a treatment plan that can be carried out by the patients themselves or with the help of the rehabilitation physician’s medical team.” That team could include neurologists, orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists. Patients are provided continuity in care, seeing one physician who will communicate with all other physicians involved in the treatment. Dr. Shelton received two undergraduate degrees, Biology from Western State College of Colorado and Chemistry from the University of South Florida. He completed his residency at Emory University, Interventional Pain Management Fellowship in Marietta, and is a board certified Physiatrist. And what’s a Physiatrist? It’s 28

She has been involved with chiropractic since she was 10 years old, when she received her first chiropractic adjustment. Even then she realized the importance of regular chiropractic care to feel her best. At the Towne Lake/Woodstock office, Dr. Van Tran specializes in treating patients through chiropractic care and rehabilitation. Discover Chiropractic and Rehabilitation has one mission: to improve the health of our surrounding communities by providing excellent quality service and care utilizing education, the latest technology, compassion and chiropractic. Quality Care Ryan Family Chiropractic Wellness Center
W
here Family Wellness Is Essential, this is the tagline for Ryan Family Chiropractic. Merriam-Webster defines essential as “of the utmost importance.” This is exactly how Dr. Tim feels, that the well being of the entire family is of the utmost importance, not just that of a single family member. Dr. Tim Ryan
Dr. Tim Ryan has a Bachelors of Arts degree from Waldorf College and his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic. He practices using a variety of full spine adjusting techniques including; Diversified, Thompson Drop, and adjusts with the Activator as needed. He is an active member of the Acworth Business Association and the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. Currently he is working on his ICPA certification in Family Wellness and Pediatrics. Through the experience of starting his family, Dr. Tim has seen the significant benefit his wife and children gained through chiropractic care and wants to offer that to others, helping them raise healthy children and families. “In March 2011, we opened Ryan Family Chiropractic Wellness Center in Acworth, bringing affordable family wellness care to the community, where my family has been living since moving to Georgia. I had been working in the Rome area since 2004, following my graduation from Chiropractic school, and figured it was time to make a difference in my own community,” said Dr. Tim. He and his wife of 13 years, Bobbie Jo, worked together to start and manage the office. Bobbie Jo is the Office Manager and she also homeschools their two beautiful and outgoing children, Connor (10) and Kylee (7). The children are often at events or the office helping as well; it’s a family thing for the Ryans. Dr. Tim explained, “When we decided we were going to start our own business, we made the choice to not accept insurance. There are so many different types of insurance plans and they often don’t cover what our patients want, wellness care to make the most of their lives, not just to put the pieces back together. Because of this decision we’ve been able to set our fees at $35 or less per adjustment. This usually matches or beats most people’s co-pays. We don’t do contracts, but we do offer monthly payment plans to help individuals, and families, save even more. We also have programs to give back to those that dedicate themselves to our community. For example, we offer a 20% family discount to EMS, Fire, Military, Police, School Staff, Teachers and Homeschoolers. It’s our way of helping support other families in our community.” 30

In addition, they offer many free events to the local community through their office such as: Health Talks — FREE informative hour discussions on chiropractic and wellness topics and what it can do for you and/or your family. Pathways Connect Acworth Group — FREE meeting place for Moms/Women who want the best choices of wellness for themselves and their families. Discussions are guided by topics from the Pathways magazine offered free to participants. Summer Science Classes for Kids — FREE classes to get kids interested in knowing more about how their bodies work! How To Prepare for Financing Your New Home Whether you’re buying your first home, a larger home for your growing family or your dream home, they all should be enjoyable experiences that make you walk away with pure excitement as opposed to a sigh of relief.
deposits. The reason being is that they are looking for undisclosed loans with undisclosed payments that can affect the ability to repay the mortgage.
Before buying a home, many home buyers start preparing by checking their credit, figuring out a monthly budget and ensuring they have enough money for a down payment. These are all great initial steps to take and will prepare you for financing a home. However, in preparing for mortgage financing, many home buyers make honest mistakes while taking these steps that cause a lot of delays and headaches when their mortgage is being underwritten.
Large deposits are defined by more than 25% of a family’s gross monthly income. Lenders will look at the last two months Jay White bank statements, all pages, and they will scrub them to ensure there are no large deposits. If there are large deposits, then lenders will source where the money came from requiring more documentation. If the money was cash, typically this money will not be counted as proof of down payment and cannot be used.
Most of you have heard through media outlets, friends or family members a horror story (or five) regarding mortgage financing these days!! I hear the stories; I have had Realtors and home buyers call me after another lender has caused them to live these horror stories. Once I dig in, I uncover that the issues were self-inflicted due to a lack of guidance by their old lender in the beginning or worse, lender inflicted; all of these issues can be overcome, or better yet prevented, when home buyers are educated properly by good lenders. A very common mistake (due to not knowing) is that home buyers will transfer money around from account to account, or make cash deposits in their bank accounts for down payments and earnest money, just before or while in the underwriting process. Underwriters and investors alike are terrified of large banking

So, if you are going to buy a home, one step to add in your planning process is to put any cash in the bank at least three months in advance — this will cover you for the 60 day seasoning rule. Also, do not transfer money into or out of the account you are going to use for the down payment and earnest money. If you must transfer monies, consult your lender first, as we can direct you on the proper paper trail. Jay has been in mortgage lending for 11 years. Term Life Insurance: A Popular Choice For Many Second in a series of columns on life insurance People often don’t look at the complete picture of life insurance until something big happens. By that time, however, it may be too late. Term life insurance is an excellent option for people who can’t afford permanent life insurance or need life insurance for a limited period of time. A term life policy lasts for a fixed period of time, from one to 30 years or longer. It’s often purchased to provide funds for financial obligations, such as a mortgage or child’s tuition, in case the insured dies. An advantage of a term life policy is that its initial premiums are typically less expensive than other types of life insurance. This may be ideal for young families who want additional coverage for expenses such as childcare, in the event one or both of the parents pass away. Depending on your reasons for purchasing term life insurance, you can choose either a level or decreasing death benefit. A level death benefit provides the same amount of coverage for the entire policy period. If you select a decreasing death benefit, your amount of insurance will go down over the length of the policy. Term life insurance is often renewable, subject to limitations in the policy, although the premiums will likely increase to compensate for the higher age of the policy owner. Some term policies may also be converted to whole life or universal life insurance. Unlike whole life or universal life policies, term life insurance does not accumulate cash value. I will talk more about whole life and universal life insurance in my next two columns. Marvon and his wife Jada have two daughters and live in Acworth. He is a native of Las Vegas, Nevada and has been a business owner for over 19 years. Marvon was the 2012 president of the Acworth Business Association. His office has been recognized by J.D. Canker Sores by Dr. Scott R. Harden and Spencer Harden
Canker sores are very common problems experienced by many people that cause discomfort and embarrassment. Canker sores should not be mistaken for cold sores, which are caused by the herpes virus. However, canker sores occur in 20% of the population and are seen more in women than in men. They generally occur between the ages of 10 and 40 and last 1-2 weeks. Fortunately, they tend to reduce in frequency with age. Canker sores are not cancerous or pre-cancerous and are not contagious. Canker sores are ulcers that form inside your mouth or on your lips because of an immune system reaction initiated by some type of trauma. Forms of trauma include: physical trauma (sharp tortilla chips, biting your lip, or braces), chemical trauma (spicy or acidic foods) and miscellaneous trauma (stress, some medications or sunburn). Canker sores might stem from allergic reactions to oral bacteria according to some theories, stem from sensitivity to sulfate in some brands of toothpaste. Vitamin B12 deficiencies may contribute to triggering canker sores, as well as gastrointestinal issues such as Crohn’s and celiac disease. Additionally, stress can compromise your immune system and cause canker sores. An oral ulcer that persists two weeks could be oral cancer and is a good reason to see a doctor. Be aware that certain foods or drinks could possibly trigger canker sores so try to avoid them. Once a canker sore appears, avoid spicy, hot or acidic foods that irritate it further and cause pain. Rinse with warm salt water to help reduce tissue swelling and to promote healing. You can also use over-the-counter topical numbing agents to ease the pain. Canker sores, also known as Aphthous ulcers, are subdivided into a) minor aphthous ulcers, which occur 80% of the time, and b) major aphthous ulcers, which occur about 10% of the time. Minor aphthous ulcers are small and round, typically less than 10 mm across, and look pale yellow in the center with a flat red border around them. One to five ulcers may appear at the same time. Each ulcer lasts 7-10 days, then heals without leaving a scar and produces little to no pain. Major aphthous ulcers tend to be 10 mm or larger and look pale yellow with a red swollen border around them. One or two ulcers appear at a time and lasts two weeks to two months, typically leaving a scar. They can be very painful and may interfere with eating.
Treatments for aphthous ulcers are designed to reduce pain, and help them heal as quickly as possible. There is no treatment that prevents aphthous mouth ulcers from recurring and no treatment may be required. The pain is often mild, particularly with the common ‘minor’ type of aphthous ulcer. Here are several categories of medicines that offer pain relief from canker sores:

A. Chlorhexidine mouthwash helps to prevent ulcers from becoming infected and is usually used twice a day. It may stain teeth brown; however, the stain is not usually permanent. Brush your teeth before use and avoid drinking tea, coffee or red wine.
B. Steroid lozenges (brand name Corlan® pellets or Betnesol® tablets) may also reduce the pain and help ulcers heal more quickly. Use your tongue to keep a lozenge in contact with an ulcer until the lozenge dissolves. A steroid lozenge works better the sooner it is applied after noticing an ulcer, and if used early enough, it may prevent an ulcer from fully erupting. The usual dose is one lozenge, four times a day, until the ulcer disappears. Children should not use this treatment for more than five consecutive days. C. A barrier paste or powder such as carmellose sodium (brand name Orabase® and Orahesive®) can be applied to the ulcer to reduce pain. D. A pain-killing oral rinse, gel, or mouth spray may help to ease pain. Examples include benzydamine spray (brand name Difflam®), or choline salicylate gel (brand name Bonjela®). Bonjela® should not be used in children under the age of 16 due to the potential risk of Reye’s syndrome if it is overused. These treatments are over-the-counter medicines and that are available at your local pharmacies. Paid Advertisement
Acworth Police Department This month, I want to talk about an important crime related issue, a safety tip and finish up with my five “Ps” for enjoying the festivities when you come celebrate the Fourth of July with us at Cauble Park.
We are hoping to see crime continue to decrease in 2013. Our officers have done a great job of focusing on efforts to detect and deter property Chief Wayne Dennard crimes in the city. But one of our biggest nemeses continues to be “entering autos and thefts from autos” in residential areas. Most of the victims of these crimes are leaving their car doors unlocked. “Handle flippers” is the term that we use for criminals who just walk around pulling car door handles until one opens. Unfortunately too many are opening and the thieves are rummaging through glove boxes and consoles, taking everything from checkbooks, bank statements, GPS units and other electronics, and even cash. So far this year, we are at a slightly lower level of “entering auto” crimes than last summer. I need your help to keep our crime rates on the decline… Please Lock Your Doors!
“Georgia Teens Ride with P.R.I.D.E.”
Parents Reducing Injuries and Driver Error - This is a FREE, two-hour course designed to help parents and their new (or soon to be) teen drivers, ages 14-16, learn what they need to do during the 40 hours of supervised practice driving time required by Georgia law. This program addresses driver attitude, knowledge and behavior, rather than a technical hands-on driver training course. The next class will be held on Saturday, August 17, from 9 - 11 a.m. For more information or to register, email mtaylor@acworth. org or visit www.acworth.org and click on “Police” under Departments.
Cobb EMC Steak Out Honors Law Enforcement
Over the past month, we have experienced two cases involving vehicle versus pedestrian accidents. During the summer months, always be aware that more people are out walking. Be watchful for pedestrians, motorcycles and bicycles. Please remember that it is not always safe to drive at the posted speed limit. Slow down by just a couple of miles per hour and be alert. We hope to see you at Cauble Park this month as we celebrate the Fourth with our annual concert and fireworks display. The weather will be great and large crowds are expected. Parking is very limited at the beach; however, shuttles are available from locations near downtown. It is also a just a short walk from parking areas near Main Street. If you can pack light and plan accordingly, walking will allow you the most control over your departure from the beach after the fireworks. Shuttle lines for the exit will be long and vehicles parked at the beach will be held until the pedestrian traffic has diminished to an acceptable volume to share the exit routes. Also, remember that you cannot bring your own grill into the park, as portable grills create an increased burn and fire hazard. A limited number of permanently installed grills are available on site. Lastly, please do not bring your own fireworks. Sparklers or any other type of “legal” or “illegal fireworks” are strictly prohibited. If you remember my five “Ps” — you and your family will be all set to enjoy a great Fourth of July at beautiful Lake Acworth. • Pack light • Portable grills and fireworks are prohibited • Park outside the beach area • Party responsibly • Pedestrians leave first 40

New AC Unit is the Best Investment in the Market The one thing you can be assured of with your investments in the stock market is that they will continue to go up and down in value, similar to a roller coaster. You probably can count on your 401k to go down in value in the unforeseen future, but hopefully it will start to go back up in value. Real estate investments have been on the way down, as with almost every other investment Dan Jape vehicle out there. The one investment I know of that continues to generate a guaranteed return year after year, regardless of the financial markets, is a new high efficiency heating and cooling system. It consistently saves you money and is the best investment you can make with your hard earned money these days. A new high efficiency heating and cooling system can be acquired for as little as $3500 to $4000, and can trim up to 40% off your annual gas bill and 30% off your electric bill. These savings can be about a $300 – $400 per year in gas and $200 – $300 in electric. This is a substantial return on investment and when the new heating and cooling system pays for itself after six to 8 years, the savings will be thousands of dollars over the projected life of the equipment of 20 – 25 years. I know of no other guaranteed return that comes with no risk. A lot of homeowners think that as long as their furnace continues to put out heat, it is safe to run until it quits. This could not be farther from the truth. I visited a home last week with a 20 year old furnace,
42

in a crawl space, that had rusted so badly that the flames rolled out the front of the unit and melted the gas pipe sealer out of the gas pipe. This caused an open flame outside the furnace jacket that singed the floor joists above it and almost burned the house down. Had this happened at night, this malfunction could have burned this home to the ground, along with the entire family in it. The peace of mind that your family and home is safe, along with the above mentioned savings, is another guaranteed return on your investment in a new high efficiency heating and cooling system. A whole house humidifier is another product with a guaranteed return on investment. You can install a furnace mounted bypass humidifier or a steam generator humidifier in your home and start to save energy dollars immediately. Your gas furnace can dry the air out in your home up to 10% to 15% relative humidity levels in the cold winter months, and this dryness will cause you to set the thermostat at a higher temperature to try and feel warm. Bringing the moisture level up to 30% to 35% will allow you to turn down the thermostat and still feel warmer, along with preventing dry and scratchy skin, static electricity, bloody noses and higher gas bills than needed. For a small investment of $450 to $875, you can guarantee yourself a return of all the above, year after year. The heating and cooling investment market is full of guaranteed returns. Ask your investment broker if he has any guarantees lately, and I think you will soon find that investing in this arena is a sure fire thing. Dan Jape is the owner of Reliable Heating & Air. Imagine being diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis and realizing that you have become a T12 Paraplegic. How many of you would attempt to hike up a mountain? It wasn’t exactly Terry Tinnell’s first idea either.
T reacherous T errain by Kaci Pollack Despite this warning from the manager, Terry and his team of supporters persisted, determined to fulfill the dream of getting to the top of the mountain. With the help of his friends and family, Terry continued to train and prepare all the way up to the May 15 hike date. They ordered a new wheelchair and specially adapted it for mountainous terrain, did several test runs at Kennesaw Mountain and his sister, Kay, and Jim went to Mt. LeConte every weekend, scouting out trails and taking pictures of what they thought would be any problem areas for his wheelchair.
It was Christmas 2011 and Terry Tinnell, an Acworth native, and his family, were sitting around the table, talking about the most beautiful places each of them had ever seen. When his brother in law, Jim Myers, mentioned Mt. LeConte in Knoxville, Tennessee, Terry said he had After all of their preparation, May never taken his wife, Cindy, 15 finally arrived and it was time there and that because of his for Terry to take on the mountain. condition, he guessed “now He and his family, including his son I never will.” In response to Julian, 25, daughter, Erin, 24, and this defeated statement, Jim his beloved dog, Coco, arrived at responded, “Why not?” Mt. the start of the Trillium Gap Trail LeConte is a mountain only at Mt. They began to decide who would participate, what the physical requirements would be, what kind of wheelchair Terry would have to use, which trail they would take, etc. Amongst all the uncertain details, Terry knew one thing for sure from the get go; he only wanted the people closest to him — his family and best friends — alongside him as he ventured up the mountain. The next step in figuring out how to tackle this challenge was to book a night at the LeConte Lodge and let the staff know what they were planning on doing. Mt. LeConte is booked nearly every night, up to even a year out. They do room reservations on a lottery system, where guests put down their top three choices of dates that they would like to visit and then, based on availability, Mt. LeConte makes the reservation for one of those dates. Terry randomly put down his birthday, May 15, as one of his lottery dates and low and behold, May 15 was the date chosen. Terry and his family confirmed their plans with the manager of the LeConte Lodge. At first, the manager tried to talk him out of it. He told Terry that he had seen many people like him try and fail at climbing the mountain in a wheel chair and because of safety issues, he didn’t think it was a good idea.
In all, the five hour hike turned out to be seven hours. Upon reaching the top of Mt. LeConte, several people came out of the lodge to congratulate Terry and his team. Ironically, one of the first people there to congratulate him was the very same manager who advised him not to attempt the hike in the first place. When asked how he felt after reaching the top of the mountain, Terry responded “emotional, rewarded and worn out.” He continued on saying that to think he was able to get his family and friends to do something so big for him was very humbling. To sum up accomplishing his dream of taking his wife to see the “prettiest place on Earth”, Terry remarked, “If you choose family and friends carefully and have the right attitude, you can accomplish anything.”
Tennis and Chiropractic When played at a high level, tennis becomes an incredibly physically demanding sport. It can be played at very high speeds with constant start and stop motions. The shots in tennis — running ground strokes, stretch volleys and awkward overhead serves— wreak havoc on backs, knees, ankles, shoulders, elbows and wrists. As seen in other sports, tennis Dr. Sherri Ziomek injuries occur more often from rapid deceleration than they do from acceleration. However, training typically focuses on muscles used in acceleration, which can lead to injury. A tennis chiropractor can show a tennis player the proper training and stretching in order to avoid injury, as well as treat injured players to get them back on the court quickly. Two of the most talked about injuries in tennis are tennis elbow and ironically, golfer’s elbow. The cause of tennis elbow can be very challenging to diagnose. People who have never played tennis can suffer from the condition, usually as a result of gripping activities such as screw driving or hammering. The repetitive motions stress the relevant tissues, causing pain around the outer aspect of the elbow.
However, the most common injuries to tennis players are in the lower extremities, especially Achilles tendonitis, infrapatellar tendonitis (jumper’s knee) and the calf muscles (tennis leg). Tennis elbow, rotator cuff injuries, rolled/twisted ankles and the lower back are also big problem areas for both competitive and social players. A chiropractor will not only treat any of the above injuries, but also show the player how to avoid them as well. Timely chiropractic treatment for tennis injuries could well serve to avoid expensive surgery and consequent months of rehabilitation. Chiropractic care can benefit a tennis player in the same way a mechanic can service a car. After a certain time frame or mileage (six months or 10,000 kms), your car needs a grease and oil change amongst other things — tire pressure and wheel alignment checks, spark plug replacements, engine mount tightening and so on. While most cars will still run seemingly well after a six month time frame, the majority of mechanics will argue that these vehicles will not be running as efficiently and could even be dangerous and unsafe. Like many things in life, how you look after something determines how long it will last. The same applies to your body and as a tennis player, your body is subject to varying forces while on the tennis court. Chiropractors are trained to identify stiff or improperly continued on page 55

SEP IRAs
Useful savings plans for the smallest businesses.
Don Akridge, MBA, CPA, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ U.S. Marine Corps Veteran – Emory University Alumnus
Do you own a small business with a few employees? Are you selfemployed? In either case, the SEP IRA may be the ideal, low-cost, easily administered retirement savings plan for you.
Contributions are discretionary. Each year, you can contribute or not contribute to the IRA(s) involved. The amount you put into the IRA(s) can also vary. In 2013, you can contribute up to 25% of an eligible employee’s compensation, up to a limit of $51,000. No catch-up contributions are permitted for older employees.
This is a simple pension plan using a traditional IRA. (SEP stands for Simplified Employee Pension.) It lets you put aside money into individual IRAs for you and your employees, with lower administrative fees and less paperwork than other types of retirement plans.
A three-point employee eligibility test. Generally, employees of a small business are eligible for a SEP IRA if they 1) are older than 21, 2) have worked for the business in at least three of the five years preceding the year in which the IRA contribution is made or 3) have received $550 or more in compensation from the business in 2013 (this can rise with COLA adjustments in future years). However, the IRS states that an employer “may use less restrictive requirements to determine an eligible employee.”
Tax-deferred compounding of pre-tax dollars. You contribute pre-tax dollars to a SEP IRA, and that has the effect of lowering your tax bill. The money in the IRA grows tax-deferred, and your business doesn’t pay any taxes on the IRA earnings. The assets can be invested in a myriad of ways. The traditional IRA rules apply. When you take the money out of a SEP IRA for retirement, you pay ordinary income taxes on it. (Should you withdraw SEP IRA assets before age 59½, you’ll likely be assessed a penalty, with some exceptions.)
Employees covered by a union contract may be excluded from a SEP, as well as non-resident aliens who have not earned income from your business. All eligible employees must participate in the SEP, including part-time and seasonal workers and employees who die, quit or get laid off or fired during the year. continued on page 55

Is My Social Media Generating Business
The Dog Days of Summer When the weather turns hot, we barricade ourselves inside to enjoy iced tea and AC. Most of us with pets ensure that our furbabies are right there with us. Naturally, if we reach for a quick snack, our dogs and cats expect to get something special too. So, what do you feed your four-legged family members that’s healthy and delicious?
Several months ago, I posed the question, “Is social media right for my business?” As more and more business owners answer this question “Yes,” the next logical question has to be, “How is it working for you?” I constantly receive requests to “like” business Facebook pages. Don Kyle When I get these requests, I wonder what good my “liking” a particular page does, other than perhaps allowing special naming privileges for the page. The most important question that should come to mind related to business social media pages is, “Is it generating (or going to generate) business for me, or am I simply entertaining my fans?” As more business owners become convinced that they MUST participate in social media, the overall results may not be supported by increases in customers, revenues and profits. To analyze the effectiveness of your social media strategy, I suggest taking a hard look at what you are currently doing. Several specific areas you should address include: 1. Am I generating more business and making a profit on it, and are the profits generated from it greater than the amount of time and money spent on it? 2. Is my content interesting and attractive and do I have the most effective “call to action” tools on my pages? (If not, how do you expect to drive new business to your website or physical location?) 3. Is my social media strategy consistent with and working hand in hand with my overall marketing strategy? (In other words, does one strategy conflict with another for your business?) 4. If applicable, is my outsourced social media support company performing effectively and as promised? If not, why not? (Anyone can claim to be a social media expert, but only a few truly are. So you must perform due diligence, including assessing the experience and knowledge level of those who will be maintaining your social media sites and responding to fans on your behalf, before deciding to commit to any contracts. Make sure you can cancel if you’re not satisfied.) These issues, along with any others you identify, should be addressed fully. Then, modifications should be made, as necessary, to your social media strategy. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about growing your business. Don Kyle is the CEO and Founder of Small Bizz MBA, a company which assists businesses with their marketing, branding and advertising needs. You can reach Don by calling (404) 580-6331 or email dkyle@smallbizzmba.com. 50

While it’s true that table scraps are not good for your pet, there are a few human foods that are actually helpful to your furbaby. For instance, sweet potatoes are a great source of fiber and vitamins C and B6. Thinly sliced sweet potatoes are a tasty snack, or you can bake them and then scrape out the skins to mix with your pet’s food for an extra vitamin boost. Mix a little cooked sweet potato with some plain yogurt (remember, your furbabies don’t need sugars or sweeteners!) and put into ice cube trays to freeze for a doggie popsicle. You can even use candy molds to make popsicles for little dogs or cats. The yogurt in the popsicles adds calcium and protein, particularly if you use one with live, active bacteria. Canned pure pumpkin is another great add-in for your furry companions. It’s chock full of fiber, and dogs especially, are attracted to its scent. My dogs are on a prescription diet, which I like to supplement with boiled chicken and rice, followed by a can of pumpkin for a fiber boost. Canned pumpkin can also be mixed with yogurt, just like the cooked sweet potatoes, to make puppy popsicles. If you are looking for low-cal treat options, try mixing baby carrots or plain green beans into their food to add extra volume. Fresh apple slices are also crunchy snacks that dogs love. Be sure to leave the skins on for extra nutrients but be careful not to let your pet have any of the seeds, as those can be toxic. Furthermore, plain cooked oatmeal is a great source of soluble fiber, for both humans and furbabies. Try mixing it into your pet’s regular food, particularly if they are having digestive issues. Or, mix ¼ cup dry oatmeal, one egg, and ½ cup cooked sweet potato or canned pumpkin and drop by teaspoonful onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350° for approximately 20 minutes or until cookies are golden. These make a great alternative to store-bought treats. Try making something yummy for your pet, minus the extra seasonings we humans like. They’ll appreciate the effort and your friends will be impressed with your furry sous chef! Happy cooking everyone! Tiffany Hughes is an Acworth resident who enjoys spending time with her family and furbabies. She will gladly provide additional recipes if you email her at creativecook11@yahoo.com.

Vision’s Role In Sports It’s that time of year for fans to get ready for the upcoming sports season. A common goal for virtually all athletes, at any level, is the desire to perform at the best of their abilities — even if they’re competing against themselves. In pursuit of that goal, most athletes spend a lot of time and energy practicing the skills of their chosen Dr. Dylan Reach sport. While such common sense efforts can have positive effects on an athlete’s ability to enjoy and compete within their given sport, there is a crucial element of performance that is often overlooked — and those are visual skills. The vast majority of sports require varying degrees of visual skills such as eye-hand coordination, depth perception, tracking, and peripheral vision — just to name a few. Unfortunately, many athletes are so busy developing their understanding of their respective sport that they may fail to consider the importance of vision skills or sports vision. While there’s nothing mysterious about sports vision and its benefits, it does require a trained eye care professional who is
familiar with aspects of sports vision to help interested athletes gain a competitive edge. For some parents, gaining that competitive edge for their children (or themselves) requires spending hundreds of dollars on individual pieces of equipment and clothing. However, much of that investment is wasted if the athlete has problems seeing the ball, opponents or any other element on the field of play. The bottom line is that one of the most important pieces of equipment for any athlete is the eye. Just as the equipment to participate in various sports is different, so are the visual requirements of most major sports. The visual demands of making a three-point jump shot, reading a putting green, serving a tennis ball, catching a football or throwing a baseball player out at home plate are different. Once a trained eye care professional identifies the specific visual skills required by a given sport, it’s then possible to administer sport-specific eye screenings for the athlete. Once an athlete has been appropriately screened and compared to athletic norms, visual skills that are weak or may be enhanced can be identified. There are a variety of visual enhancement programs that athletes of all ages can practice that are tailored to improve specific visual skills that the athlete needs. continued on page 55

Let’s Get to Grillin’ & Chillin’ This is always such a fun time of year, so let’s take a look at what’s under our feet and make sure that it is stable and sturdy. Our wooden decks take so much abuse that we often overlook some basic maintenance issues that can put our fun time in jeopardy. Let’s start with the deck boards. Jeff Glover
Make sure the decking boards are nailed down securely. If they have pulled loose, remove the nails and replace them with a 2 ½” decking screw. If any boards are splintered, cracked or just plain broken, remove them and replace with new decking boards. Make sure the surface is clean of any mold or mildew. Once mildew begins, it spreads rapidly making the surface slippery and unsafe to walk on. Have a licensed contractor come out and pressure wash your deck, and if you haven’t sealed it in awhile, this is a great time to do it. Next, let’s get underneath the deck and check the joists that support the decking. These joists should be fastened to the banding using metal connectors and on some decks, joists may be supported on a wooden ledge and notched out so that they can rest on top. Although this is an acceptable form of construction, I recommend adding a metal connection to prevent the joist from pulling away from the banding.
The most important check is your deck post supports. Check to see if they are resting on a concrete footing and that the posts are sound. Look for splitting down the sides of each post and although some splitting will occur naturally through these posts drying out, make sure they do not exceed 1” to 1 ½ “ deep. If you are concerned or unsure, call a licensed contractor to check them for you. If your deck is supported by metal columns, check the bottoms to make sure they have not rusted through. Unfortunately, metal columns rust from the inside out, so check these annually and add this job to your maintenance checklist. If your deck is more than 6 feet off the ground, you should have 6” x 6” pressure treated posts. Anything under 6’ in height can be supported by 4” x 4” pressure treated post. Lastly, if your deck is on its last legs and you are kicking around the idea of building a new one, you will recoup 72% of your investment within the first year, according to Remodeling magazine. So, let’s get out there, check the deck and start doing some “GRILLIN’ AND CHILLIN’” with family and friends. Jeff Glover is a Georgia, licensed and insured General Contractor. He is a lifelong resident of Cobb County who grew up in Marietta and has lived the last 15 years in the Acworth community. He has been in the Construction Industry for 17 years and is married to Melissa and they have two children Brendan and Abigail. The favorite season of the year for the majority of the population has arrived. Some of the words that come to mind this time of year are vacation, the pool, cookouts, friends, family, relaxation and the list goes on and on. I do want to encourage you to add at least one more word to the list.

Wait for it…strategy.
Strategy? Really? I know, it seems like such a buzz-kill but hang with me. We all live such busy lives. In the midst of the busyness, it is so easy to get caught in an endless cycle that leaves us depleted physically, emotionally, relationally and even spiritually. I am willing to bet that you know these feelings all too well. You do not have to live your life this way. Even better, it’s not as difficult to make the change as one might think and the summer is the perfect time to recalibrate and prepare for the next season of your life. Here are a few strategic tips that help me and I believe, can help you take advantage of the opportunities that are yours this summer.

S trategy
1. Work ON it, not just IN it. Make time to work on your business, not just in your business and on your family not just in your family. Working on it enables you to be ready for the season ahead, instead of always feeling like you are operating from a deficit. 2. Refuel. Make time to do what it is that replenishes your life. Find a hobby. Go to a movie. Volunteer. Take a nap. Refueling physically, emotionally, relationally and spiritually is an investment in both yourself and others that you must make time to complete. 3. Consume THEN produce. Production is important; however, if you don’t take time to receive, you will not have anything left to give. If you want to consistently make withdrawals, you better make sure that you are making consistent deposits. Deposits in your life are made primarily through the books you read, the places you go and the people who are speaking into your life. These three suggestions will not happen by accident. You must make the conscious decision to find the time to make these a strategic priority in your life. If I can do it — then you can do it. Give it a shot. What do you have to lose? J.R. functioning joints that may be restricting your access to power and movement. Timely treatment to joints in particular, can often result in noticeable and immediate improvements to your game. Most players play through their pains and wait for time to heal. This is foolish. It’s like continuing to drive your car thinking it’s going to service itself — ridiculous. Whatever sport it may be, if you are trying to get better and be more like the pros, consider that it’s not just about practicing the game itself, but working on your body too. Dr. Sherri Ziomek graduated as Valedictorian from Life University. She has been involved with chiropractics since the age of ten. SEP IRAs
Continued from page 48
Starting up a SEP IRA is easy. You can open up one of these plans with the help of almost any financial advisor or financial institution. In fact, you can even have other retirement plans at your business in addition to SEP IRAs, and you can set up a SEP IRA for your small business even if you are already participate in another retirement plan at another company. Sole proprietors, partnerships, and corporations can all create SEPs. In fact, they may qualify for annual tax credits of up to $500 during the plan’s first three years, which can be applied toward the plan’s start-up costs. So if you have a small business or work on your own and you want a retirement plan that works for your future without a lot of hassles, a SEP IRA may be right for you.
