HELPING HAND FOR SOUTH LANTAU BUFFALO SOCIETY

Due to the destruction of the wetlands and the development of South Lantau villages, there is much less grazing for the water buffalo that roam freely around the island. South Lantau Buffalo Society is a small group of volunteers that support the feeding of the water buffalo and provide them with medical care. The group is funded solely by donations, and headed up by Jean Hui, who is well-known in the community as the “buffalo whisperer”.

Working alongside Jean and her team is six-year-old India Holt, a Tong Fuk resident, who has grown up with the water buffalo in her village. India has a strong connection with the buffalo and this year, she decided to find a way to raise money for them. She’s been watching her mum, local photographer Karen Holt, take photos of the local herd for years and decided this was her way in.

“On June 6, my birthday, I started raising money to help the South Lantau Buffalo Society care for these beautiful creatures,” India says. “My mum is a photographer, and she helped me photograph the buffalo. I’m selling the prints to help support Jean, our buffalo mother.” The two prints (12 x 9” or 24 x 18”) – Mama & Me and Nap Time – in the India and the Water Buffaloes series are available framed or unframed at www.urbanearthmama.co. India took the photos at golden hour (sunset) which gives them a lovely golden tone. Prices start at just HK$290, with all proceeds going to South Lantau Buffalo Society.

ENJOY NEW DISHES AT BELLA CIAO LANTAU

Since opening in February in Lo Wai Village, Pui O, Bella Ciao Lantau has quickly become a go-to for islanders and visitors alike. With the Italian restaurant, bar and grocery store, owner F&B veteran Matteo Cecchi has set out to provide diners with a taste of fresh produce shipped from the four corners of Italy. Matteo focuses on seasonality and regularly updates the menu with recent additions including Caprese Di Bufala, Vitello Tonnato, Salmone Affumicato, Ravioli Al Tartufo, Parmigiana Di Melanzane and Polo Al Limone. All-time classics, such as pasta and pizza, are a speciality, with many dishes served in new and creative ways. CATCH DEBORAH AND FRIENDS PERFORMING LIVE

Singer/ songwriter Deborah Mannas returns to the Hong Kong Jockey Club Hall, Asia Society Hong Kong Center on August 18 with Deborah and Friends. You can expect a generous mix of well-loved jazz standards and inspirational originals from the long-time Tung Chung resident. Deborah is joined by guest vocalist Arvin Robles, plus Bhoyet Samonte on keys, Jon Benard on drums and backing vocals, Vinc Chan on bass, Daphne Villanueva on flute and Jojo Antinero on sax and backing vocals. Since 2018, Deborah has released two albums Inspired (2018) and Magician (2019), and multiple singles. She has performed all over Hong Kong, and makes regular appearances on RTHK – The Works, Morning Brew, Afternoon Drive and Uncle Ray. Deborah is also a poet, an HR professional and the founder of IMTAC (I’m More Than a Cover) magazine, through which she aims to empower and inspire girls and young women.

ENROL FOR BUDDHA YOU RUN

Some 2,000 people are expected to take part in Buddha You Run on November 4, and if you’d like to be one of them you need to enrol by August 30. The race was first held in November 2015 and is organised by Po Lin Monastery, alongside Ngong Ping 360 and Kwun Chung Bus Holdings. Buddha You Run starts at Ngong Ping Piazza at 9am, with chartered buses provided to collect competitors from Tung Chung bus terminal. There are three distances – 3km, 8km and 13km – to choose from, and you can run solo or as a team. Parent and child categories in the 3km ensure that young athletes can take part, and there’s also the option to run as a three-generation family group.

Buddha You Run ends with an awards ceremony at Temple of Ditan, Ngong Ping. The 11th Lantau Beer Dash is being held on September 16, and fancy dress is a must. Registration for each team of four is on a first-come-first-served basis, so you’re advised to book your spot now. The race was last held in March 2008, and is brought back this year by RaceBase, who are also planning to reprise 30km Lantau fun run Country of Origin this coming April. Beer is provided free of charge on race day, with competitors asked to be mindful of their intake. REGISTER TO RUN CBRE LANTAU 2 PEAKS

CBRE Lantau 2 Peaks is scheduled to be held on October 8, and registration is now open! Enrolment is on a first-come-first-served basis and runners are encouraged to sign up early to secure their spot. Competitors choose to run either the 23km (two peaks) or 15km (half peak) course, solo or, for the 23km, as part of a team. The 23km course goes up and over both Lantau and Sunset peaks, with a total elevation gain of 1,889m. The 15km course is slightly less gruelling, with runners heading over Ngong Ping and experiencing an elevation gain of 854m. Both the 23km and 15km course start and end in Tung Chung.

AT THE TAI O WATER PARADE

The Dragon Boat Water Parade of Tai O is an annual highlight of the Tuen Ng Festival; a century-old religious ritual aimed at pacifying the water ghosts and making Tai O a safe place to live. In the early morning of June 22, deity statues from four local temples were put on sacred sampans and towed by dragon boat in a parade through the Tai O waterways. Villagers burnt paper offerings and sprinkled the water with “auspicious” joss paper as the deities passed by. After the parade, local fishermen held a friendly dragon boat race. THE HONG KONG LOTUS FESTIVAL

Po Lin Monastery at Ngong Ping hosted the Hong Kong Lotus Festival from June 23 to July 2 with 400 varieties, and over 4,000 pots of lotuses and water lilies. Talking to the Lantau Losers is a bit like herding cats. Though not as wilful as your average house cat, and they certainly don’t marginalise your existence, there’s an obvious – and ironclad – bond among the pick-up football team, comprised largely of pilots, that can easily send it into its own private metaverse. The chatter at Ouzo in Tung Chung, just a few minutes from the pitch they just left, is constant. They cut each other off and finish each other’s sentences, take the piss and fly off on tangents. There are in-jokes, industry smack-talk. But somehow guests aren’t made to feel like outsiders. Which is kind of the point.

It’s a sweltering morning, and this day’s stragglers – as in anyone not rushing off to work – are a diverse bunch, and the Losers wouldn’t have it any other way. Parked mid-table are de facto founders South African Justin Krause and exBritish Air Force pilot Matthew Griffiths, who at 39 and in Hong Kong for 10 years, refers to himself as the “old guy” who’s “easily injured”.

Flanking them are quiet Australian Andy, and Zimbabwean Philip, the Losers’ longest Hong Kong resident besides Matthew at 12 years. There’s Val from France, and Joost, the Dutchman, who’s just hanging out, having torn a ligament a few weeks earlier. “He tore it by going to kick the ball – and missing it,” cackles Matthew, getting a chuckle all around. Last but not least is 23-year-old Bati, a Turk, born and raised in Germany – who is not a pilot; he’s fresh out of hospitality school and into a gig at a five-star hotel. He’s also the only one of this lot not living on Lantau. He’s relocating to Tung Chung in a few weeks, though.

Most of the Losers live on Lantau because of its proximity to the airport, but as Bati’s looming move demonstrates, they’d probably be there anyway. Admittedly the Tung Chung area didn’t hold much appeal a decade ago, especially for young, single, frequent travellers interested in having fun. But ultimately prices start to matter, kids happen and tastes change. “People started moving here. Now there’s plenty of stuff to do,” argues Matthew.

Philip sums it up best when he says, “It’s actually just a great place to live – and I lived in the city for six years. It’s separated from the business; the community here is incredible, and when you walk around you bump into people you know. There’s a sense of peace. And Tung Chung’s actually a really beautiful place.”

RELAXED AND SOCIAL

The initial idea behind the Lantau Losers was to provide incoming airline staff, usually with Cathay Pacific, another way to break the ice, make some new connections and not feel so isolated. Justin, Matthew and Gary Kolk (not around today) started actively recruiting friends – and strangers – into the Losers in 2019, quickly growing the WhatsApp group to nearly 100 participants, largely by word-of-mouth.

“Just before COVID, there was us and another group that played separately but used the same pitch. I played with them a couple of times but they were super-serious,” recalls Justin. “Our idea is to keep this as casual, and chill and sociable as possible. You can be a player of any quality and still have fun. Ironically the quality of the play has gone up even though we’ve stayed relaxed.”

Unsurprisingly, COVID-time mask mandates, social distancing rules, fears of breaking the law and stints at Penny’s Bay posed challenges, but the fact the team’s still together is a testament to its therapeutic effect over the past few years.

Relaxed and social remain the key words. The Lantau Losers get together for seven-a-side matches twice a week (maybe just once during peak summer heat) at 9.30am at Man Tung Football Pitch. Justin is generally in charge of booking the pitch and collecting “fees” from the team –HK$100 each month or thereabouts to slap on an Octopus card for LCSD rentals – for the American football-scoring games. Matches have been known to end 10-8.

“Losers was my idea. It all started with a glass of Red Horse beer. Write that down,” Matthew notes cheekily. The team shirts indeed sport a red horse, but “losers” also carried an accessible, irreverent message in line with the team’s raison d’être. “And if we play someone else the other team

thinks we’re terrible. Then we’re terrible,” Matthew cracks. Everyone’s a goalkeeper. There are no fixed positions. The Losers are The Full Monty of Lantau football clubs.

All that being said, Matthew admits he wasn’t interested in joining the Losers at first, having previously dabbled with a more corporate team. He found it far too competitive for what was essentially a beer league. “This isn’t like that,” he says. “This is about friendship and camaraderie. No one is going to shout at you for messing up. It’s about having some fun.” Joost agrees, recalling his own experiences with more polished squads. “Guys were taking dives and rolling around on the field and it was just frustrating. So the Losers is a breath of fresh air that way. Everyone’s thrilled when someone scores a goal. We’re trying to win, but no one’s out to injure anyone.”

At this point Bati starts packing up, but before heading to work he takes a second to concur as the rookie of the bunch. “I really appreciate these guys. I’ve been here six months so I don’t really know that many people in Hong Kong yet,” he says. “These are some of my best friends now. It’s unfortunate we don’t play more.” Needless to say, that’s met with a chorus of good-natured indignation led by Matthew. “Some of your best friends?” he huffs.

THE LOSERS WANT YOU!

Justin and Matthew mean it when they say anyone can join the Losers. They’re not looking for Bundesliga skills, or even newcomers to the city; they’re looking for people who want to have fun and make friends. “At this point we’re open to anyone joining us,” adds Joost. “We’ve had guys join us that have never played, and would never consider playing football. There’s one guy, a bit on the small side, he’s elderly, I don’t know, about 45…” starts Justin. There’s a break to rib him about calling 45 elderly, but he pushes on. “He’s by far our most improved player. He messages every so often to thank me for “letting” him play and to say how much he loves it. That kind of thing is really great to hear.”

Philip agrees, explaining how lunch at Ouzo is a matchday highlight, and that everyone went to Justin’s recent wedding. As the singleton with a current PlayStation, Philip is the resident game centre and frequent babysitter. He doesn’t seem to mind. “Can we talk about mascots?” he queries, referring to the kinds of supporters who regularly show up on the sidelines, like Matthew’s three-year-old daughter Georgia – “A delight, always down here having beers with us. A proper legend.”

Does anyone think the Lantau Losers has a shelf life? Not really. “I don’t see an end,” says Matthew. “We have more and more local people joining, and people who aren’t associated with flying.” Finishes Philip: “As long as people love football and love community, there will be Losers.”

Ark Eden’s multi-day Christmas camps bring out the adventurous, curious and compassionate side of children, aged 5 to 11 years. Adrienne is the Founder and Managing Director of Pui O’s Treasure Island Group (TIG) which is now celebrating 26 years of operation, and Assistant Coach of Pui O’s South Lantau Paddling Club (SLPC). She has lived on Lantau since 1996, in Pui O since 2003 and has famously never left the beach since. Adrienne first picked up a paddle 15 years ago.

Polly is a landscape architect/ artist and former Disney Imagineer. A Discovery Bay resident since 1998, Polly also has a deep connection with the ocean as a founding member of DB’s Lantau Boat Club (LBC) Outrigger Paddling Section in 2004, and a keen dragon boater since 1999.

In addition to Adrienne and Polly, two other Lantauers –both DB residents and key members of LBC – are headed to the Worlds this month. These paddlers, who have elected not to be named, will represent their respective home countries in the Women’s and Men’s Masters 50 OC6 categories.

ELITE FEMALE ATHLETES

To have four Lantau-based paddlers competing in the Worlds speaks volumes about the strength of the local water-sports community. The fact that three of the four are women, highlights the talent and dedication of Lantau’s female athletes. In achieving their dreams, these “mature” competitors are breaking barriers and pushing boundaries, while also encouraging a larger conversation on gender equity in sport.

“This is the first time that a Women’s Masters 50 OC6 team and Junior Female (U16 & 19) team will attend this event from Hong Kong, significantly broadening women’s presence in elite level athletics,” Adrienne says. “We feel enormously proud and excited that Cathay has chosen to partner with us, to help shine a light on the core values of our Team of Hong Kong 2023. These values are lifelong women’s health and wellbeing, community building through grassroots clubs and sports associations, and youth development.”

A female entrepreneur in the outdoor education industry, which remains male dominated to this day, Adrienne has long been an inspiration to the Lantau community. Her place at the Worlds enhances her ability to promote women in sport, and draws on her role at SLPC and TIG, where she is dedicated to getting girls (and boys) into water sports, and to shaping young leaders.

For Polly, the significance of being selected for the Team of Hong Kong 2023 is just as personal. As a “transracial” adoptee, raised in a Caucasian family in the UK, who moved

to Hong Kong in the 90s, she found out only recently that both her birth parents are Hong Kongers. This, coupled with the sense of belonging she enjoys at LBC, makes representing Hong Kong at the Worlds especially poignant.

“Regardless of our seemingly lofty athletic aspirations, we are normal, busy folk, juggling career, home, family, as well as devoting time to our clubs, building community, promoting inclusiveness and diversity,” Polly says. “Our clubs’ members are a diverse bunch but we’re all ohana , Hawaiian for family, and have an obligation to look out for one another.”

TEAM OF HONG KONG 2023

Since Adrienne and Polly’s confirmation of selection by Hong Kong China Outrigger Canoe Racing Association (HKCOCRA) in May, they have been on a fast and intensive track. Weekly training with the Women’s Masters 50 OC6 team (six ladies plus a reserve) comprises three to four days on the water, plus one to two days in the gym, under the guidance of international coach Jeremy Young.

The team’s unique challenge, since most are from different clubs, is learning to paddle together. Despite their immense individual experience, they are working through a challenging process, not just to take their fitness to the next level, but to unlearn, relearn and synchronise their paddling. As mature female athletes, they are invested in making smart decisions about rest, recovery, illness, nutrition and, not least, strength training which is so important for all women over 40.

Each member of the Women’s Masters 50 OC6 Team of Hong Kong 2023 has been passionately involved in the sport at grassroots level for between five to 25 years, many founding their clubs, and all having held key roles in nurturing their respective club communities. “This really is a moment to celebrate Hong Kong’s “work-hard/ play hard” ethos for all who claim this fabulous place as their home,” Adrienne concludes.

HIKING IN HOT WEATHER

TRAIL WALKING IS ABOUT ADVENTURE – GETTING A NEW PERSPECTIVE EITHER ON THE PLACE YOU’RE IN OR THE PEOPLE YOU’RE WITH

Lantau’s trails form a comprehensive network of highways and avenues, by-streets and alleys that snake over the lush, hilly countryside. Some are government-maintained, paved footpaths, replete with railings and signs. Others are only accessible if you are willing to bushwhack through the overgrown bramble that obscures the ground you walk on. All of these routes can link and overlap with each other, meaning you can hike here for years and still find yourself covering new ground.

What’s more, these trails are uniquely versatile. It’s up to you whether you want to challenge yourself and trek a day (or several days) away, or simply stretch your legs on a Sunday morning.

All of that being said, a good hiker is a prepared hiker; there is nothing worse when hiking than wishing you had done something differently. And with a bit of planning and some hiking smarts, you can still enjoy the trails in the hot summer months.

THE HIKE

Imagine you are planning a casual family hike for the coming weekend… up Scenic Hill. Located beneath Ngong Ping 360’s Airport Island Angle Station and a 10-minute walk from Tung Chung town centre, Scenic Hill is now the tallest point in Chek Lap Kok. The views from the top are outstanding – it’s a superb place to watch aircraft take-off and land – and the trail leading up to the summit is a favourite among Tung Chung residents training for trail races or walking their dogs.

The 77-metre trail path starts on Chek Lap Kok South Road, and it’s a short, brisk walk to the summit. The hike, though steep, is do-able for most, though the stairs will knock the wind out of anyone at an average level of fitness. It is a great first go for a new hiker, but younger children may struggle with the steps. On a sunny day, when the pollution index is low, the view of Tung Chung,

EVEN A CASUAL HIKE INVOLVES SOME PLANNING

the airport, South China Sea and (possibly) Macau still makes Scenic Hill a rewarding destination.

Allow 30 to 45 minutes depending on your pace. The duration of this hike can, like all hikes, vary wildly depending on the ability of your group and the weather at the time of walking. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department provides approximate times for many popular hikes, as do a plethora of Hong Kong hiking blogs, but these often contradict each other.

Use whatever approximation you find as just that; the best way to accurately find out how long any hike will take is to walk it a couple of times yourself. Another advantage of getting to know the lie of the land in advance? Less chance of getting your friends and family lost. While I challenge anyone to lose their way hiking up Scenic Hill, this is a useful piece of advice to follow on more remote, less well-signposted hikes, particularly in the summertime. Knowing your route means avoiding unnecessary detours that can cost precious time in the sun and heat.

AN EARLY START

You start out early before it gets too hot, at 9am, maybe 9.30am if someone took a little too long to get out of bed. “Starting” means beginning your hike, fully-stocked and nourished; it does not mean meeting in Tung Chung to pick up breakfast and snacks.

Admittedly the hills are not going anywhere fast, but it is almost always better to start a hike earlier than later.

That way, you can have as much of it behind you as possible before the heat kicks in. This is especially true in the summer.

While weekend lie-ins are precious, how does a fat cat nap on a lazy afternoon after a workout and a big lunch sound? This is the lofty goal you strive for today.

SHOES, HATS AND SUNSCREEN

You begin your ascent. The concrete stairs leading up Scenic Hill are well maintained as is the paved trail nearer the summit but, as any keen hiker will tell you, tennis shoes simply will not do. To tackle even the most “leisurely” hike, you need a pair of running shoes that have a decent tread, if not hiking boots with ankle support.

Boots may be excessive for this walk, but they are a solid investment if you wish to tackle longer, less-maintained trails. A good pair will have specialised treads and extra padding. The support around the neck of the boot can help prevent you from rolling your ankle, a nightmare scenario for any hiker, and a real possibility on many of the steep descents on slopes or stairs you may face on Lantau.

As you are climbing, the sun starts to break through the morning cloud. You immediately stop to apply sunscreen (if you didn’t already at home) and, importantly, you put on your hat. There is very little shade on this route (barring the Chinese pavilion, which you can rest up in at the top) and wearing a hat can be a crucial factor in preventing sunstroke.

STAY HYDRATED

You’ve been walking for a good while now. You’re starting to lose your breath and your legs are aching slightly. You tell your group you’re ready for a break and you pull out your water bottle. For an extra kick, you sip on the still-cold bottle of Gatorade you bought at 7-Eleven about 20 minutes ago.

There is no exact science for the amount of water one should bring on a hike; it really depends on the person. One thing is for certain though – always bring a bit more than you think you need. It is much better to have half a bottle left at the end of the trail than to run out halfway through. As hiking is a sustained, sweaty exercise, it is also a good idea to bring an isotonic sports drink with you to help replenish your electrolytes. I am partial to Gatorade, but Pocari Sweat, Vitamin Water and some brands of coconut water also fit the bill.

You should additionally bring some snacks – there isn’t a café or even a 7-Eleven atop Scenic Hill. Nuts and dried fruits provide the good natural fats and sugars you’ll need to stay energised. Add in some M&Ms or yoghurtcovered raisins to sweeten things up – it’s called trail mix for a reason!

HIKING WITH OTHERS

Hiking with others is above all else a safety precaution. If by some unfortunate chance you injure yourself on the trail, having someone there to administer aid or contact emergency services may be essential.

However, the majority of the time, the people you hike with will simply set the tone for your journey. Having nowhere to go but further helps you to forget about the little things and prompts you to share stories and discuss literally anything that pops into your head. Also, you can enjoy the spectacular views you come upon in the moment with friends or family. So, hiking with company is doubly important, it’s for both your physical and social wellbeing.

CUCUMBER MELON CAPRESE SALAD

Serves 2 (appetizer)

8 thin slices cantaloupe

255g cucumber, thinly sliced

Large handful arugula greens, stems removed

Small handful basil leaves, torn into large pieces

Small handful mint leaves, torn into large pieces

1tbsp olive oil, plus extra for drizzling

3tsp white wine vinegar

170g fresh mozzarella, drained, halved and sliced

In a large bowl, combine the melon and cucumber slices with the arugula, basil and mint. Drizzle the olive oil and 2tsp vinegar over the top, and season well. Use your hands to gently toss the components together. Taste, adding more vinegar and/ or salt, until the flavours pop.

For stacked salads, make a ring with 2 each of the melon slices. Top with the cucumber slices, a quarter of the mozzarella, and a mound of greens. Repeat to make 2 layers of each ingredient. Drizzle a little more olive oil, salt and pepper over the top. Serve right away, preferably with a glass of crisp white wine.

CLASSIC PANZANELLA SALAD

Serves 6

1.1kg mixed ripe tomatoes, cut into bite-size pieces

340g sourdough bread, cut into small cubes

150ml extra-virgin olive oil

1 small shallot, minced

2 cloves garlic, minced

½tsp Dijon mustard

2tbsp red wine vinegar

Small handful basil leaves, roughly chopped

Place the tomatoes in a colander set over a bowl. Season well with salt then toss. Set aside to drain, tossing occasionally, for a minimum of 15 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 180°C. In a large bowl, toss the bread cubes with 30ml olive oil. Transfer to a rimmed baking sheet. Bake for about 15 minutes, until crisp but not browned. Remove from the oven and leave to cool.

Remove the tomatoes from the colander and set aside. Add the shallots, garlic, mustard and vinegar to the bowl of drained tomato juice. Whisking constantly, drizzle in the remaining 120ml olive oil. Season the dressing to taste. Combine the toasted bread, tomatoes and dressing. Add the basil leaves. Toss everything and season. Rest for 30 minutes before serving, tossing occasionally until the dressing is absorbed by the bread.

Dolphin watching can be one of the most serene experiences a person can have. Watching the dolphins emerge from the water after waiting patiently for them to make their appearance is a truly unforgettable experience. Of course, the dolphins off Lantau are IndoPacific humpback dolphins (aka pink dolphins) – an endangered species. But Hong Kong Dolphinwatch is adamant that its trips do not pose a threat to the dolphins. “As an eco-tour operator, we are dedicated to informing passengers and raising awareness for conservation, without impacting negatively on the dolphins. If all boats in dolphin habitat are wellbehaved, you don’t have to worry about the dolphins being injured by propellers or stressed out by loud boat engine noise.

“We never chase; we just watch from a distance,” the spokesperson adds. “We wait for the dolphins to approach us of their own free will, if they prefer to keep a distance, we respect their wish.”
