savor

a party for a purpose

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2015

Robin and Dr. Baruch Jacobs are quintessential community leaders. They have successfully filled leadership responsibilities in national and international philanthropic organizations. Their societal contributions have been recognized by these organizations and by the City of Miami Beach, the Miami-Dade County Mayor’s Office, and the Florida House of Representatives. Dr. Jacobs is one of Miami’s most renowned plastic surgeons with experience spanning three decades. He received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine. He completed his General Surgery residency at Boston University Medical Center and his Plastic Surgery residency at the Cleveland Clinic, where he served as Chief Resident in Plastic Surgery. In January of 1990, he launched Miami Beach Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery Center, one of the most prestigious Plastic Surgery Centers in Florida. The Center has treated over 10,000 patients from all over the world, including notable celebrities. Dr. Jacobs is also an Assistant Clinical Instructor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Miami and a member of the Adjunct Staff of the Department of Plastic Surgery at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He is former Chief of Plastic Surgery at Miami Heart Institute and has served on the Miami Beach Health Advisory Committee. He has privileges at hospitals throughout Miami-Dade County, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is Board Certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. Additionally, he is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Greater Miami Society of Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Jacobs has written numerous articles and has presented papers before national groups of plastic surgeons. He has been a guest on nationally televised talk shows and is frequently consulted and quoted by the media. He has been named by The New York Times as “the plastic surgeon who has been entrusted with keeping Miami Beach beautiful.” Robin Schwartz Jacobs is a partner and co-founder of CruzJac Productions - a production company that produces and develops original programming. Robin holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Boston University and a Masters of Public Health Degree from Boston University’s School of Public Health. She has also pursued graduate studies in Business Administration and Management. She is Past President of the Miami Beach Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery Center. Robin and Dr. Jacobs are proud to have been involved in the MBJCC for many years. Robin has served as President, Vice President, and chaired the Programming and Nominating committees. She has been a member of the Building and Search committees, and was an integral part of the process that helped build the Galbut Family Miami Beach JCC on the Simkins Family Campus. She and Dr. Jacobs feel very strongly that the JCC is the cohesive entity that brings the Miami Beach community together. To them, the JCC is a home away from home, a "living room," a place where Jewish life, values and culture are integrated to serve the needs of the broader community. Robin is currently a member of the Board of Governors of Touro College, the Board of Governors of the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and Co-President of Bikur Cholim of Miami Beach. She is Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, member of the Planning and Distribution Committee, and Past Chair and current Board Member of the Jewish Volunteer Center. She is Co-Chair of The Shabbat Project Florida and is Co-Chairing the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce Annual Gala again this year. She is an alumnus of the National Young Leadership Cabinet and has raised millions of dollars for charities and institutions of higher learning. She served in various leadership positions including the Chair of the Board of the Hebrew Academy of Greater Miami. Her family has dedicated the Academy’s campus as the Schwartz-Jacobs Campus. These organizations are only a small part of her prodigious communal endeavors. Robin and Dr. Jacobs have instilled in their children the value of community activism and volunteerism that they learned from their parents, Meyer (obm) and Sonya Jacobs and Professor William and Bernice Schwartz. Their home is known as “meeting central” and is always open to host events that benefit the community. Their greatest achievement and joy is raising their four children. Jessica is a Manager in the Mergers and Acquisitions Tax Group at KPMG. Mark is a 3rd year Medical Student at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Gabriella is a junior at Florida International University and a member of the Golden Key Honor Society. She is married to Benjamin Kalmanowicz, an Executive at Campbell Lutyens. Martha is a sophomore at the American Hebrew Academy. They and their children share many memories of organizing and participating in activities, classes and events at the Miami Beach JCC.

The Schechter Family

a party for a purpose

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2015

The Schechter-Englander family’s legacy of philanthropy began with tzedakah and giving back in Marmerosh-Siget, Hungary with Shmaya Schechter in the early 1900s. In Siget’s hospital, where no Kosher food was available, Shmaya collected tzedakah door to door to feed and distribute necessities to the patients. Every Pesach, Shmaya and his sons would distribute matzoh, salt, onions, etc to 15-20 local families. In his memoirs, son Jacob notes “we always had guests in our house – I sometimes say that my father and I have something in common – the hotel business. But he took no money, and though our home consisted of one room and a kitchen, we sometimes had 10 or 15 sleep-over guests.” In 1921, following a mandatory military decree, Shmaya and his family moved to America and eventually settled in New York. His son Jacob Schechter and wife Celia moved their family from New York to Miami Beach in 1939 and entered the hotel business. Over the years, the family owned and operated landmark properties including Miami Beach hotels - The Park Central, The Edison, The Tides, The Helene, The Alden, The Lorraine, The Caribbean – and the Pioneer Country Club in Catskills, NY. Following the deaths of his parents, their son, Sam Schechter, z’’l, and his family moved to Miami Beach full time in 1965 where first he ran the Cromwell Hotel (now part of the Shore Club) and then owned and operated The Caribbean Hotel for 27 years until his retirement. Sam would greet his guests during his nightly rounds in the hotel dining room with "Another Beautiful Day in Miami Beach - No Snow Today!" Sam and Rhoda’s daughter, Linda Schechter has 4 children – Daniel, Jeremy, Ariel and Lily – and starts each day working out at the Miami Beach JCC. She owns Miami Beach's Tasty Beach Café with son Jeremy, is a Real Estate Investor and has purchased and sold countless Miami Beach homes over the years. She is on the Board of Greater Miami Jewish Federation and a member of the Miami Beach Area Committee. She is a 3rd year Board Member at the Miami Beach JCC, where she also Co-Chairs the Arts and Culture Program. Dr. Daniel and Sari Wachtel and their 2 children, Ella and Sam, live in Atlanta where Daniel works as a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Geropsychologist in his private practice at the Department of Veteran Affairs and Sari is a professional in learning disabilities. Jeremy and Jacquie Wachtel live in Miami Beach where Jacquie is a Real Estate Tax Analyst and works for LNR Property. Dr. Ariel Grobman is a Resident at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and his wife Cynthia is a Special Ed Teacher at Hillel. Lily Grobman is a Physician’s Assistant in New York. Linda’s twin sister, Caryl Schechter Englander and husband Israel Englander live in New York and are philanthropic to many causes. Most recently, the Englander family generously donated the Sam Schechter Hall at the MBJCC in honor of their father’s memory and the legacy that he leaves to his family. Michael and Megan Englander reside in New York with their 3 children Joseph, Avi and Miri where he is a Money Manager in the field of health care. Dr. Laura Englander Levin and husband Daniel Levin reside in New York with their 2 children Lyon and Julian, where she is a Dermatologist and he is an Author. Marc Englander is an Analyst and Executions Trader at Fortress Investment Group residing in New York. Linda and Caryl’s sister June Schechter lives in Miami Beach with their mother Rhoda. Jacob’s other children – Harold, Jerry and Selma, z’’l continue the family legacy with their families. Harold and Blanche Schechter, z’’l, have 4 children – Shelly, Dov, Sussie and Ricky. Shelly and Shoshana Schechter live in New York where Shelly is a Director at the Division of Community Health and Shoshana is an assistant professor at Yeshiva University. Dov and Miriam Schechter live in New York where he is an attorney. Sussie and Benjie Brecher live in New York where he is a Senior Vice President at Hain Celestial Group. Ricky and Shari Schechter live in Miami Beach where he runs the Passover Program at the Marco Polo Hotel. Jerry and Nina Schechter moved to Miami Beach where he opened a CPA firm that later became Goldstein Schechter Koch. They have 4 children – Pinchas, Sharon, Mimi and Jay. Jerry has been quoted several times saying that “at a minimum, all my kids know they have to give at least 10% back. That’s our family motto.” Pinchas and Myra Schechter and their 7 children live on Miami Beach where he is an agent at Wexler Insurance Agency. Sharon and Abe Rudman and their 3 children live in Miami Beach where she is active in local philanthropic organizations and he is President at Sportailor, one of the nation's leading quality casual lifestyle sportswear collections. Mimi and Michael Green live in Israel where she is CFO of BARD Foundation and he is an electrical engineer. Jay and Caroline Schechter are active members of the Miami Beach community and its multitude of philanthropic organizations. Jay is a Partner and Senior Advisor at Singer Xenos. Their 4 children grew up in the Miami Beach JCC camps, activities and programming. Elizabeth and Ben Berman live in Miami Beach with their daughter Ariella. Samantha and Anshel Hass reside in New York. Isaac and Akiva are both in school – Isaac at New York University and Akiva at Hillel Community Day School. There is multi-generational history of the Schechter family at the Miami Beach JCC. The children and grandchildren have been active in camps as campers and counselors, activities, sports leagues and teams, programming, working out, and are current active members. The Schechter family is honored to be a part of this SAVOR celebration and thrilled with the beautiful facility we have built.

CHEF MASAHARU MORIMOTO has created a bridge between the culinary traditions of his native Japan and the American palate, bringing intense excitement, exquisite technique, and perfectly balanced flavors to thousands of diners throughout the world. He has garnered critical and popular acclaim for his seamless integration of Western and Japanese ingredients and has effectively created a signature style that positions him as one of today’s foremost chefs. After a shoulder injury ended a promising career as a baseball catcher in Japan, Morimoto began studying sushi in his hometown of Hiroshima. He quickly grasped the technique of this exacting food art and, at age 24, opened his first restaurant. Five years later, he moved to America to expand his culinary repertoire and explore the opportunities and possibilities he saw for a cuisine that would combine the best of both cultures. In 1994, Morimoto was recruited to join the original Nobu restaurant and soon promoted to executive chef, and in 2001, he opened his first eponymous restaurant in Philadelphia . He debuted Wasabi by Morimoto at the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai in 2004, followed by a second Wasabi at the Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi in 2008. The much anticipated flagship restaurant Morimoto New York opened in 2006. Morimoto has received numerous accolades for his cuisine and aesthetic, including several appearances on San Pellegrino’s “Top 100 Restaurants in the World” list, a James Beard Foundation Award for “Outstanding Restaurant Design” for Morimoto New York, and in 2010, Morimoto Napa was named one of Food & Wine magazine’s “Best U.S. Restaurant Openings.” Today, there are additional Morimoto restaurants in Honolulu, Mexico City, Maui, Morimoto Sushi Bar in Boca Raton, and Japonais by Morimoto in Chicago. Morimoto South Beach and Morimoto Las Vegas will open in 2014. Chef Morimoto first competed on the Japanese television show Iron Chef in 1998 and then became one of the stars of Food Network’s Iron Chef America in 2004. As Iron Chef, Morimoto was able to showcase his flawless technique and creativity with unique ingredients in front of millions of Americans. His first cookbook, “Morimoto: The New Art of Japanese Cooking,” won two International Association of Culinary Professionals awards, including the Julia Child Award for Best First Book. Beyond his culinary genius and the exquisite design of both his food and restaurants, Chef Morimoto’s business acumen has helped him succeed in two related industries. Morimoto Signature Series of beer was launched in 2003 in partnership with Rogue Ales of Newport, OR, and his legendary knife skills led him to create a line of knives crafted by Zwilling J.A. Henckels—, merging authentic Japanese blade styles with western inspired ergonomics and materials.

JOSH CAPON

Executive chef and partner behind Lure Fishbar, B&B Winepub, El Toro Blanco and Bowery Meat Company in New York City and Lure Fishbar at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel, Josh Capon’s attraction to culinary arts was cultivated from an early age with memories of home-cooked meals at family gatherings and various jobs held in the food service industry. While attending college at the University of Maryland, he realized he wanted to turn his passion for cooking into a career and transferred to Johnson & Wales University. It was during his tenure at J&W that he was tapped to be Charlie Palmer’s culinary “extern at Aureole.” Upon graduating in 1994, Capon accepted a position from Palmer to open The Lenox Room. From there, he went on to work for David Burke at the Park Avenue Café, where he was offered an exchange opportunity to work in Europe. He spent the next year honing his cooking skills in seven different restaurants throughout France, Italy, Germany and Spain. Drawing upon his epicurean experiences abroad, Capon returned to New York and accepted a position as sous chef at The St. Regis Hotel's Astor Court, later reconnecting with Charlie Palmer and becoming executive chef of Alva. In 1999, Capon joined Matthew Kenney as the executive chef of Matthew’s and then onto Canteen, where he served for executive chef for three years. In 2004, Capon became the executive chef of Lure Fishbar, a sophisticated seafood restaurant with a standout sushi bar owned by John McDonald and Joshua Pickard. In 2010, McDonald and Pickard asked him to be a partner at their newest restaurant, B&B Winepub. At B&B, Capon has created a satisfying menu of classic dishes, along with inventive spins on traditional favorites. In 2012, Pickard, McDonald and Capon opened pan-Mexican concept El Toro Blanco in New York City's West Village. Capon is the five-time winner of the People's Choice award at the New York City Wine & Food Festival's Burger Bash event for his "Bash-Style" burger. He is the co-host of Spike TV’s Frankenfood and has received numerous accolades and has appeared on numerous television shows including The Chew, Rachael Ray Show, Live with Regis and Kelly (Click "Wednesday"), CBS Early Show, TODAY and Food Network. The Restaurant in South Beach in 2002. His second restaurant, Prelude by Barton G., opened in Miami’s performing-arts center in October 2009. In 2010, Weiss took over operations of the former Versace Mansion on Miami Beach’s Ocean Drive, rechristening the historic home,—now a hotel, restaurant and venue—, into The Villa By Barton G. Weiss has appeared as a guest judge on Top Chef, and has been featured on Giada De Laurentiis Behind the Bash. He has been profiled and quoted extensively as an expert on party planning, events creation and restaurants in numerous publications, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Departures magazine, Time magazine and Forbes magazine. He has also been featured on ABC’s Nightline, CNN and CNBC. Weiss is a member of Town and Country magazine’s Wedding Advisory Board. In 2009, Weiss founded The Barton G. Kids Hear Now Foundation after his daughter was born deaf and required cochlear implants to restore her hearing. Now the Foundation assists deaf children and their families with cochlear implant education and services. The Barton G. Kids Hear Now Cochlear Implant Family Resource Center at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine Ear Institute opened in September 2010. The restaurant Barton G.
