FOR THE LOVE OF POLO UNDERSTANDING THE GAME

Simply put, polo is one of the coolest sports around. It’s a passion for millions of people across all ages, genders and geographies. Polo embraces everyone from families playing together for fun, all the way up to professional, world-class athletes. Polo is unique because, players don’t just exist as a single unit. You get to partner with another living, breathing creature; the polo pony. Ponies are skilled, highly trained athletes themselves. Together, players and ponies form a special bond and share an unspoken language that helps create all the speed and exhilaration of the sport. Historically, it’s one of the oldest team sports around, and like many equestrian pursuits, it can be linked to ancient acts of war and training for the cavalry. The concept of polo finds its roots in nomadic Iranian and Turkish people, as well as the Persian cavalry. We’re talking somewhere around the transitionary years between BC and AD. Nowadays, there are over 100 member countries in the Federation of International Polo and the game is played professionally in at least 16 countries. Polo was also an Olympic sport from 1900 to 1936. The anatomy of the game is simple. And complicated. But we’ll start with the basics. The objective is to drive the ball between the opponent’s goal posts and score the most goals to win the game. The two teams of ponies and riders fly back and forth, over a field of play that is 300 by 160 yards, approximately the area of nine football fields. For indoor play, the arena playing field is considerably smaller, measuring 300 by 150 feet. The direction of play can look confusing at first. The initial direction of each team is based on a coin toss at the beginning of the game. Teams move in the direction of their goal until the first goal is scored. After that, the teams switch goals. Direction is changed after each goal is scored. This is partially to keep outdoor gameplay fair, because of potential sun glare. In arena polo, the direction is only changed after each chukker. The game is divided into sections called Chukkers, which are seven-and-a-half minutes each. Excluding overtime, a 12

FOR THE LOVE OF POLO UNDERSTANDING THE GAME polo game, outdoor or indoor, consists of between four and six chukkers, depending on tournament stipulations. A match usually goes for one to two glorious hours. Interestingly, the players actually switch ponies for each chukker, because of the high demands and intensity required. Scoring is where it can get a little complicated. Teams do score goals and penalty shots in a pretty straightforward manner. However, teams are also handicapped and that affects scoring. The lower rated team will receive goals in handicap at the top of the game. Another very important part of the game is the divot stomp! At halftime, spectators are invited onto the grass field to help replace divots kicked up by the horse’s hooves. This tradition is a great time to walk the field, take photos and socialize before the second half of the game. Depending on the club there may be a champagne toast or fun swag giveaways. One thing there is NO rule about is who can play polo. There are opportunities to learn and play on a multitude of levels. Along with professional matches, there are games dedicated to men, women, kids, mixed amateurs, military, age groups, and experience levels. There are middle school, interscholastic, intercollegiate and even a National Youth Tournament Series. There are active polo clubs all over the country. These clubs often offer lessons for all ages and offer a wonderful community for polo lovers. Even people who have never ridden a horse in their lives can quickly learn the fundamentals and perfect their knowledge of the game, alongside improving their horsemanship and riding skills. So, if you’ve ever been curious about what it might feel like to sit up there on a polo pony and take a swing with a mallet, reach out to your local club. Just be warned, it gets in your blood and once you fall in love with the game, odds are you’ll be hooked for life.

THE SIMPLE PLEASURE OF “WINE-ING” DOWN Truth be told, the wildly popular Wine Down Wednesday wasn’t the product of some brilliant, lightbulb moment, or fancy marketing plan. Wednesday evenings were already a historically fun night at the farm. Family and friends of the polo players gave a preview of what was to come. They would regularly come out to enjoy the combination of a serene backdrop and fast-paced competition. Tailgating and polo are a natural combo, so a couple of cars would often back up to the field. An impromptu party would emerge out of trunks, complete with food, drinks, fold-up chairs, blankets, and music playing from the car stereo. Once Arranmore began hosting bigger public events, it just seemed like the most natural thing in the world to extend an invitation to the more laid-back mid-week festivities as well. That invitation was accepted enthusiastically. Each week the event seemed to grow through nothing more than word of mouth and social media posts. Eventually, one side of the field wasn’t enough to accommodate the rows of tailgaters and the opposite side of the field began filling up as well.

WINE DOWN WEDNESDAY What’s the secret to the event’s success? Simplicity. There is nothing easier than grabbing one ticket online, for your entire carload. Everyone in the car gets in the gate. Your parking spot is your party spot. Seating is whatever you want to bring… (or the back of your pickup truck, if you’re truly a pro tailgater.) You can bring take-out, throw a picnic together; or skip packing anything at all and take advantage of the amazing Allegory Food Truck! Same goes for beverages. Bring a bottle of wine, throw some sodas in a cooler, or whip up your favorite “mocktails”. Or, you can visit the Tapville Mobile taproom, which goes beyond just tasty beer selections, offering all sorts of refreshments to whet your whistle. Of course, polo is still the star of the show and Wednesdays have a vibe all their own, with different kinds of matches taking place. You could see a final tournament, the first game in a series, or anything in between. Wednesdays are also a chance to get a more close-up, casual taste of the sport than on the more formal weekend match days. You’ll get to cheer on incredible players, as they flash by and then give them a high-five after the game, as they mingle with the crowd. And of course, you still get a traditional half-time divot stomp! On select dates, you’ll even get treated to the special “Flatbed Concert Series” with live music, sponsored by Gerald Automotive Family Foundation “Gerald Cares”. Local artists bring the perfect, feel-good, sing-a-long on the lawn setlists, to add to the ambiance. In a world that’s become increasingly complex, the beauty of Wine Down Wednesdays lies in the simple pleasures of the event. Family, friends, good food, and drinks. Cabernet Cabaret, affectionately known as “CabCab”, is the event that started it all and continues to be our highly-anticipated signature event. As always, your dream-theme CabCab cover band will feature the hottest talent of the Chicago entertainment world and will cover a theme, instead of just one artist, to give you hits from all across the music-verse. CabCab is back with a DanceJam MixTape to rock the lawn from dusk til’ dawn! WHAT TO EXPECT AT A CABCAB? We longtime fans of the events at Arranmore Farm and Polo Club often toss around a rather peculiar word... “CabCab”. “Do you have your tickets for CabCab?” “What kind of spread are you packing?” “Any idea what songs will be in the theme?” Now, if you’re talking to someone unfamiliar with this signature event, you might be met with a blank stare when posing these questions; followed by, “What the heck is a CabCab??” If you’ve been a more recent fan of the event, you might be able to rattle off an answer about how it’s an amazing concert, out under the stars…kind of a casual Ravinia vibe. Sometimes not so casual. We’ve seen everything from candelabras to blow up sofas, a trolley full of concert goers to stretch Hummers, and lots and lots of sequins. But yes, just as often we’ve seen buckets of chicken and blankets on the ground; kids running around in the fields and families taking a stroll through the barns to visit the horses. If you’re been around a little longer, you can probably offer up an answer to the ever-popular question, “Who’s the band?” First, you give them the standard answer: “It’s the cover band of your dreams!” The thing is, if you go out to see any theatre or band shows, in any number of the live venues in the Chicagoland area and even beyond, you’ve seen the members of this band. But you’ve never seen them together, as this particular group. The core musicians and singers are all stars in their own right. They are all some of the most in-demand musicians and singers of the music and theatre scenes. All in all, there are about 50 performers in the rotation and each CabCab band brings together a dozen or so, who have the date free in their busy calendars. A set list of hits and dance jams is pulled together, unified by a theme, charts are 36

WHAT TO EXPECT AT A CABCAB? written for the songs and the group rehearses just one time, before bringing the show out to the farm. One of the coolest things is seeing how regular performers become fan favorites and watching the success of each individual when they go back out into the world. Currently, several past CabCab band members are performing on Broadway, in National Tours and in Broadway in Chicago shows. But if you go back even further, even beyond the first CabCab show, which was actually called “Cabernet Cabaret”…. (Ahhhh, so THAT’S where “CabCab” came from!) … the roots of this event are found in a deeply personal place for Arranmore Event’s founder Shannon Greene Robb. If you ask her, she’ll tell you how she remembers having backyard dance parties and music room jam sessions with her family and dreaming of bringing that experience to a larger audience. And bring it she DID. For over a decade, CabCab concerts have brought families and friends together, to enjoy a night of incredible, one-night-only music. The audience is able to get up-close-and-personal with performers who are not only stars, but engaging artists, who go out and dance with the crowd when they aren’t on stage. The littlest audience members can always be found at the very front row of the crowd, often with generations of their relatives close behind, all sharing the experience. And Shannon gets to look out over the crowd of over a thousand happy faces, watching her dream come true. This year’s theme “Dance Jam Mixtape” is certain to rock the lawn as per usual. And whether it’s your first CabCab or your 15th, you will immediately become part of the family. It’ll be a night that will free your soul, move your feet and offer up a good dose of summertime magic. We’ll see you out there on the dance lawn!

POLO SCHOOL | ALL AGES | ALL LEVELS Las Brisas Farm and Polo Club offers a unique and fun program enabling people from all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to learn to play or learn to ride. Our Polo School provides a personal experience that is tailored to each individual based on their goals. Students will learn basic horsemanship, swing mechanics, rules of the game, and most importantly- to have fun! Being coached in a safe, encouraging environment that includes the use of a horse, tack, polo helmet, mallets, and polo balls. PONIES OR PLAYERS WHO WORE IT BEST? When it comes to Polo, both the people and ponies involved use very specialized equipment. These details don’t just look cool, but also serve important functions of safety, competitive edge and yeah…it all just happens to look pretty cool too. So, let’s compare and contrast and decide…”Who wore it best”!? Boots. This one is a tie. Ponies and riders both use protective gear on their legs. Riders sport specially constructed boots, stiffer and sturdier than a fashion boot, or even traditional riding boot. They also wear knee pads to ward off any wayward mallet swings, flying balls, or close calls from close contact. The ponies are protected with their own version of boots. Polo Wraps, wound carefully in perfect concentric layers, are used to give working tendons support and protect delicate bones from the challenges of game play. Clothing? Well, the players always wear white pants, called “breeches” and logoed shirts. The ponies definitely get the win here; flashing beautiful, gleaming coats in a wide array of colors and markings.

PONIES OR PLAYERS WHO WORE IT BEST? Helmets are unique to the players, keeping precious human skulls safe from concussions, in case of a fall. The ponies in a flat-out sprint can reach 30 mph and balls can whizz by at around 100 mph. Ponies don’t wear a helmet but they do have equipment on their heads. The bridle, often with draw reins helps the riders communicate and leverage the athleticism of their mounts, during starts, stops and turns. The ponies leather “uniform” extends to their necks and backs, with a breastplate, attached to the saddle. You could consider the saddle itself a shared piece of equipment, sleek, with little padding to allow close connection between pony and player. As for the rest, it’s a bit of a toss-up. Riders get to hold the polo mallet because…opposable thumbs. The mallet is made of flexible bamboo or plastic, that can arc into impressive contortions around the ponies’ necks, bellies and tails. And the ball passes from player to player, with a hoof only occasionally and coincidentally knocking it off course. But the ponies get the cool haircuts, manes and forelocks buzzed in whats called a “roached” fashion, to keep flying hair out of the way. The combined image of riders and players flying across the field together is a wonder to behold. The picture isn’t complete without the tools, clothing and yes…the fashion of the sport. This writer is “team pony”, with their satiny coats, punk inspired haircuts and leather accessories, but now that you know what everything is for, you can decide “who wore it best” for yourself.
