WELCOME Summertime! Well, almost. By the time you read this it will be balmy, but as I write this? Well…it’s 43 degrees and we need a boat to get most places. Part of the Creative Process, our theme for 2019, is embracing change. Embracing the things out of our control and allowing them to shape new and often more interesting, fulfilling outcomes. I realize a rainy, chilly Spring day gives us the opportunity to reflect, plan and DREAM. Summertime is an easy dream. The fields are green. The horses come back. There are those couple of days where you find it’s actually warm in your car as you get in. That’s the good stuff. The warming of our body and souls that brings on the new season. The planning part takes more work. We are so excited for our plans for the 2019 season! We have rallied around this concept of “Laid Back Luxury” and with amazing partners, we have over 20 events in the works, to liven up your summer season. From the casual Wine Down Wednesday Polo, to the elegant weekend Chicago Polo Women’s Invitational and Arranmore Polo Classic. We also have our fan-favorite CabCab concert. Plus, we are adding an amazing polo/concert event, benefiting ONE FEEDS TWO. Polo + CabCab + Giving Back? That’s the creative process of dreams turning into plans, turning into a summer to remember for you and yours. On a personal note, I will be traveling to the island of Arranmore, off the Western coast of Ireland, in early June. So, I’m sure I’ll have some fantastic photos and stories to share! Our roots trace back to this magical island and I know visiting there will lead to new energy and inspiration. I challenge you to do something that connects you to the places and people that inspire you too. We can all gather again in 2020 to share what we found. At the end of the day, that is what the creative process leads to; experiences that shape everyday life, as you journey on. But for now, the 2019 season is on! Looking forward to seeing you all at the farm! And with that…The gates are officially open, Happy Summer! INSPIRATION DESTINATIONS & THE CREATIVE CORE Just like a healthy body, we feel that a thriving team is made up of synergy and balance, though each of its parts. This year, the Arranmore team thought it would be fun to share our Creative Core spots, as well as places that propel us into action. Where are some of your favorite Inspiration Destinations (“IDs”) and where in your being do you identify as your Creative Core (“CC”)?

SHANNON GREENE ROBB

President + CEO Her CC is: The Soul

JENIN PARADISE Venue and Events Director Her CC: The Brain

SG is known as the “Gut Check” member of the team. Her instincts are unparalleled and she has taken a lot of time over the years to learn to trust her instincts. Years later, she will come back and say “I knew that was the right (or sometimes wrong) decision from day one.”

Jenin is our resident genius. For real. Send her an email and she replies with a clear, succinct, perfectly thought out response, in about two-minutes flat. She has plans on top of plans for her plans. Her strategic mind always has a zillion things happening at once and it is a WONDER to behold!

SG describes her IDs as:

JP describes her IDs as:

SEDONA | I try to get out there once a year by myself after the season. Hiking has this amazing way of having you focus on everything (rock, footing, staying on the trail) that allows all other thoughts to melt away. I lost my mom six years ago and I always feel close to her on my solo trips — guess they really aren’t solo after all.

PUERTO VALLARTA | The BEACH. My fave vacation spot. It’s authentic, unique and unexpected. I truly respect those qualities, because it’s important to me to bring those vibes into the work I do at Arranmore and in life, with blogging and anything else I put out in the world.

SOHO HOUSE | I love the energy of the city and being in the mix of creatives. I feel like anything can be done if you imagine it and everyone around you is clearly creating and connecting. SOLO DRIVES | Anywhere. I Love to Drive. And Drive. And Drive. It gives my mind a place to listen to music and relax. ARRANMORE FARM + POLO CLUB | There is an incredible energy that lingers after an event. I love to sit on the back porch and just take it in.

EDITORIALS | I love flipping through unique publications and scrolling pages like Vogue, especially Australia or Italia. I love looking at other cultures, lifestyles and fashion. RESTAURANTS | I love taking in the details of unique design concepts and interiors. If I had to pick a fave, I’d say TACOS! I also actually love to cook. It’s very therapeutic for me and we enjoy a healthy lifestyle of eating clean. SOCIAL MEDIA | It’s where everyone goes to create. It’s inspiring to see what others are up to and finding unique people, places etc. ARRANMORE FARM + POLO CLUB | Gets my brain spinning and makes me want to create. Love that it’s open and endless. It’s my “creative brain dump” place.

LARA FILIP Managing Artistic Director + Producer

Business Development

Her CC is: The Heart

Her CC is: The Eyes Carrie is the newest member of Team Arranmore and we are not sure what we ever did without her. She brings fresh, insightful perspective to everything she sees and touches. She is also a BRILLIANT photographer and has inspired us so much with the images she’s captured at the barn and beyond. CO describes her IDs as: BOOKSTORES | I love them. Books just make me happy. Such an escape. COFFEE SHOPS | My current spot of choice is Grace Coffee in Yorkville. I literally love everything about that place. The coffee, food; the decor is so cute! I love to work there by the fireplace. HIKING | Anywhere there is a path that we can walk on is fair game. Local state parks that I frequent are Silver Springs, Starved Rock, Matthiessen State Park, as well as Big Rock Quarry. We also love to kayak down the Fox River and at the quarry at Shabbana Park. I could spend all day on a kayak! Reading a book and floating, or snapping photos, while the hubby fishes...heaven. INSTAGRAM | Looking at images is my happy place! BARN | Lara and I share being horse-crazy girls! My horse is at Larson Berry Farm, in Somonauk. Beautiful grounds there to ride on with a pond and paths in the trees. Lovely space to unwind with our ponies! DÉCOR/ANTIQUING/REPURPOSE DESTINATIONS | I love when people recreate with something. It inspires me. ARRANMORE FARM + POLO CLUB | It relaxes me, let’s the creative juices flow. I loved Shannon’s family farm in Elizabeth, IL too. Could stay a month!

LF is an unapologetic “feeler”. She’s the one you’ll see walking the barns and snuggling all the polo ponies, giving rousing pep talks to staff and crying at the beauty of the green grass popping back up at the farm in Springtime. LF describes her IDs as: CO. WICKLOW, IRELAND | I spent a year working with horses over there. The moment I stepped off the plane, I felt like I’d lived there before. It was an overwhelming sense of “home”. I actually get that in Lexington, KY too. COLONIAL CAFE | No lie. I love that Shannon and I meet there for breakfast to chat on everything personal and professional. The staff all knows us and you can literally get anything you want to eat. Do I get sundaes for dinner sometimes? You bet I do! HORSEBACK RIDING | Any place with a horse hanging about is a happy place for me. When I’m grooming, training and riding, it’s the only time I can tune in 100% to the moment. I currently ride and have my horses at Legacy River Equestrian Center in Sugar Grove. I love it there. Everyone is so nice, the facility is amazing and it’s near where my Grandparents used to be, so I get a dash of nostalgia in the process. BIG ROCK, IL | My grandparents lived there when I was little and I LOVED hanging out in the woods, playing in the creek. There was so much freedom in that time of my life. I constantly find myself trying to recapture that feeling. ARRANMORE FARM + POLO CLUB | I don’t think there is any surprise that ALL of the team had this on their list. There is a reason we work so passionately to share this beautiful place with the world. I’ve had more fun and happy memories there than anywhere I can think of.

2019 ARRANMORE FARM + POLO CLUB SEASON

A FARMHOUSE WITH HISTORY About 4 miles away from Arranmore Farm + Polo Club, sits the sight of our farmhouse. The ORIGINAL site. Looking at it now, it seems it always sat, proud and stately, as the crown jewel of our farm. In reality, it was once just Bob and Phillys Harvey’s family home. It was actually picked up and moved to where it now stands in 1999. Yup. Minds blown, right? The process was fairly involved. Holes dug. Ramps set up to drive in and out. Pneumatic pumps are used to raise the building up above ground level. Before it’s moved, the footings and base of the walls are poured. Then the basement walls are poured. Once that all dries, the house takes its leisurely 5-6 hour commute, all while the photos remained hung upon the walls. Bob Harvey was born and raised in that house. He spent his whole life there, with his wife Phyllis and their family. A house full of memories that would have fallen silent, alone and eventually probably torn down, if not for the vision of John Greene to actually pick it up, move it and allow its presence and history to grace a blank slate, waiting for its own new beginning. It wasn’t the first house John had moved. It was, in fact, the fourth. However, it was the first to take up residence on his farm. His new farm, at the time. (The previous polo hotspot was Naperville Polo Club), which was demolished due to development. Now, as developments continue to pop up all over the once quiet, rural landscape, Arranmore remains a largely untouched, peaceful sanctuary, with the old Harvey farmhouse standing sentinel, just inside the main drive. For years, the farmhouse served as the offices to John Greene Land Company. Eventually, as that venture grew and moved to larger offices, (in the middle of those very developments that now peppered the area), the house stood mostly quiet again. There was some storage use. A private office. Then, just under ten years ago, the next generation of Greene family entrepreneurs started haunting the halls, in the form of Shannon and her fledgling team of collaborators, working on a brand new venture; ArranmoreArts. 28

2019 ARRANMORE FARM + POLO CLUB SEASON

Ideas flowed, meetings were held, plans were made and the rooms of the old farmhouse came alive again. The team evolved and new events were introduced. Musicians and singers watched from the upper deck, as the first CabCab audiences streamed through the gates. Polo attendees mingled on the lower decks, as they were introduced to the sport. Arranmore Events blossomed, as the newest enterprise. More plans were made. More events were born. Then, in January of 2018, a frozen pipe burst on the third floor and water rained down through the house, from top to bottom. Though many would call this a small disaster, the Arranmore team saw it as a big opportunity. Renovations began to restore and revitalize the home. Walls were removed on the second floor, to create a beautiful, sun-filled gathering space. Other areas of the home were brought back to their original glory. Once work was complete in May of 2108, the old farmhouse practically glowed from within. Now, the glow shines outward in the form of the welcome it offers everyone who walk through its original doors. Only two families have ever lived in the old farmhouse, since it was originally built in 1918, over a hundred years ago. But countless people have become part of the Arranmore family through their experience within its walls.

OH, WHAT A YEAR! | 2018 IN REVIEW FLORAL EVENTS Alice’s Table took the beauty of nature at Arranmore to a new level, by bringing the outdoors indoors! Utilizing the gorgeous new Farmhouse renovations, guests created floral and holiday wreath designs, while enjoying cocktails and great company.

House, Turning Point, Hobson School, Presense Health, Great Lakes Academy, DuPage Pads, Bridge Communities, Naperville Park District, Plainfield Junior Women’s Club, Illinois Hunter Jumper Association and of course, the Arranmore Mother Ship hosted over 8,000 attendees, at last year’s charity event for Cal’s Angels, with GooGoo Dolls and Gavin Degraw.

YOGA EMPOWERMENT

GOOGOO/GAVIN + GIVING BACK The heart and soul of Arranmore has always been grassroots philanthropy. Did you know in the past 8 years, we’ve given back in the form of services or donations to Hesed House, Ronald McDonald 36

We believe in the power of connecting with nature. It seemed a, dare we say “natural” fit, to bring yoga to the farm. Coming together in the peace of the open space has been a truly powerful experience for the many who have made the mini-pilgrimage to Arranmore’s welcoming, centering lawns. We hope you’ll join us in 2019!

2019 ARRANMORE FARM + POLO CLUB SEASON

WINE DOWN WEDNESDAY FEVER A couple of years ago, we thought Wine Down Wednesday was just a little add-on event, with a fun name. Little did we know the allure of a laid back, tailgating evening, watching a polo game, with friends and family would be just the hump day escape we all needed. This event keeps expanding and above all else, we will continue to make this feel like an intimate, easy going event, even as we welcome the growth and popularity of “the little event that could”.

EXPANSION TO THE BACK 40 Not everyone realizes how truly expansive Arranmore Farm is. When we started to ponder the idea of larger events, it because immediately clear that we would need another entryway to the farm and additional parking. The space we lovingly call Arranmore Annex was transformed into open space parking and the “GooGoo Drive” was installed. We are so excited to have these auxiliary spaces, as we now host lacrosse and soccer tournaments.

WOMEN IN THE SPOTLIGHT A Tournament for the ages took place in 2018, when the Chicago Polo Women’s Invitational grew from a single game to a full-on, four game tournament. We brought together the best of the best. We watched those women go into beast mode, as champions were crowned and lasting memories were made. And boy did we set a precedent! Our 2019 Women’s Invitational Tournament promises to bring back all the thrills and fellowship…errr…womanship of bringing these amazing pros together.

BIRTH OF STARSTRUCK There is an old tradition that says, if you kiss a baby horse’s nose, it will bring good luck, especially in terms of weather! So, we are extra excited when we have a foal at the farm. It’s true that polo ponies can be any breed, and many are Thoroughbreds that come off the racetracks. But purpose-bred polo ponies are also a passion of many, including the founders of Arranmore. Sweet little Starstruck spent last summer with us at the farm, being a baby and adored by our visitors. He was painstakingly bred from the best polo bloodlines out there and we cannot wait to see how he develops!

2019 ARRANMORE FARM + POLO CLUB SEASON

37

HELICOPTERS AND AIR GLIDERS At the end of many evenings, as the sun is sinking into pink and purple hues, we often hear ourselves calling out,”Here he comes!”. Looking up, the most striking figure glides through the skies and over the field. Spotting our neighbor’s air glider has become a fun tradition over the years. Also spotted in the skies this year was something new, HELICOPTERS bringing guests out to the farm! What?? Yeah. We’re gettin’ fancy, y’all. Seriously though. All of your Rockstar dreams can come true with a helicopter trip from Chicago, landing directly field side.

JG GOES TO ARG Finally, we have to give a shout out to John Greene, the Patriarch of Arranmore and ambassador for the United States and the world of polo for more years than he’d like for us to mention. In 2018, he took the trip of a lifetime to Argentina, considered by many to be the motherland of the sport, to take part in a star studded, International tournament. We are so proud of his passion and energy, to support this sport we all love. May we strive to emulate those qualities ourselves this year, as we welcome our guests to the farm, from all corners of the globe!

MAY THE HILL RISE TO MEET YOU IN 2019 We’ll be waiting with a cold beverage and open arms. 38

A LETTER FROM ARRANMORE ARTS “ON GROWING AND LEARNING ” As the Managing Artistic Director of ArranmoreArts, I often feel like a Mom to lots of artists and dreams. Allow me brag on all “the kids” have achieved and all we strive for, through our own “Creative Process” of growing up as an organization. One of the most satisfying parts of managing the not-for-profit branch of the Arranmore tree, is seeing the impact it has on individuals. In 2018, we touched the lives of kids at the John C. Dunham STEM Partnership School, with a six-week, after school program. We worked in partnership with fellow NFPs to create opportunities for more kids to enjoy art in their everyday life and we rallied the community for our ever-popular WineWalk benefit events, in downtown Naperville. However, the biggest thing I noticed this year was some significant growth. It’s been like watching a baby take its first steps and then walking, running… and if you gave birth to a superhero, flying! Hey, we can dream, right? And we dream big. Our family of artists has seen multiple individuals get huge breaks this year, winning awards, getting their big Broadway debuts and touring the world. We used to say we featured “Local Stars of the Chicagoland Area”. Well, that motto has had to grow with our family this year. Now we can say we feature “World Class, World Wide talents, on a Midwestern Stage”, (who were often born and bred right here in the Midwest). We couldn’t be more proud of each and every local star that has catapulted outside our stratosphere. In that same vein, I saw something come to fruition that Shannon, my co-Artistic Director, and I have held dear, for as long as we’ve known each other. It’s the concept of pairing young artists with professionals and watching the dynamic it creates. We experienced that very thing, when we attended High School at the progressive Chicago Academy for the Arts, where we met. Super recently. Ok…many years ago. But it still holds true. Younger artists, in the company of professional mentors, in a professional environment have to push themselves in ways they don’t in a regular classroom or “lesson” environments. We see and feel 40

their shells crack open, as they are inspired and organically educated by doing, by experiencing and being a part of something bigger than themselves. They are trusted as part of an ensemble and it makes all the difference in their sense of belonging and confidence. As we’ve incorporated more students, interns and up-and-coming artists into our professional engagements, we’ve literally watched our mission “grow up”. I feel truly humbled, to witness this cycle of inspiration and excellence grow more and more each day. This year, we are particularly excited to partner with The Morton Arboretum on a full season of summer walking plays. All curated by the artistic staff, with endless assistance from our interns, student actors and our professional artists and mentors. It’s a beautiful thing to see your kids become contributing members of society. ArranmoreArts will always be the heart and soul of the Arranmore family of companies; the Matriarch, if you will. And I’ll tell you what…Mama is proud. Can’t wait to show you what our “kids” are gonna do in 2019! With much love to you and yours, Lara Filip Managing Artistic Director, ArranmoreArts

PONY PROFILES WITHOUT THE PONIES, THERE IS NO POLO! As our resident equestrian, we set our Managing Artistic Director + Producer, Lara Filip, out to gather some stories and stats on some of our faves. Here are some of the conversations she had with a couple of the area’s most prominent owner/players, The ever-popular, Pamela Flanagan and the Founder of Arranmore Farm + Polo Club, John Greene. They were more than happy to chat about some of the equine athletes who have become stars of the sport; each with a unique story and set of qualities. A COUPLE OF TERMS YOU’LL SEE BELOW: MARE - A female horse, typically considered a mare beginning as a four-year old. (Younger females are called Fillies.) GELDING - An altered male horse. (Intact stallions are rarely used to play. However, you will hear mention of some of the sports stallions used for breeding polo ponies.) HANDS - Equines are measured by the “hand”. A hand equals 4 inches and we measure up to the top of the withers. The withers are the prominent bones at the top of the shoulder, where the neck and back meet. An equine 14.2 and below is considered a pony. Those 14.3 and over are considered a horse.

First, Lara reached out to Pamela about her lovely rescue mare, Stella... LARA: I know Stella has made a huge splash in the polo scene because of her amazing story. Can you fill in some of the blanks on Stella...although I know some things have to stay blank, due to being a rescue! PAM: Yes! Her breeding is unknown. As far as I know, a total mutt. Her coloring though is known as a paint or pinto. She is a 14.2 hand mare, turning 6 years old this year. LARA: What was the story of her rescue? PAM: I rescued Stella from a kill pen, in Fall of 2017. I had just graduated from law school, passed the bar and moved to Chicago. I am not a big city person, I wanted to find a way to stay involved with polo, and ensure I had reason to go out to the barn, be outside and be with horses. So, I began looking for project ponies for sale online. I found an ad for a skinny black and white 3 yr old mare. She had been lightly started under saddle, but based on her body condition she had not been well cared for. When I called to inquire, I was told she was priced out based on her weight ($0.50 / pound), if not sold by next week, she would be sent to Mexico to be slaughtered. Upon learning this, I purchased her and had her shipped to Dallas, Texas to be turned out, get healthy, and begin her new life. LARA: What’s her favorite treat, now that she’s living the good life?

PAM: She will take anything! Carrots, apples, horse treats, hay, grain, grass. She loves all and any treats. LARA: Any other fun facts? PAM: She loves scratches. She will literally try to scratch you back. If you really giver her a good neck scratch she leans into you, and rubs her head on your back. This is something called “grooming,” it is something horses do to one another to be friendly, and to bond with the horses within their herd. LARA: What is her signature move? PAM: Stella is super handy! She may not have the speed of a thoroughbred, but she is incredibly quick laterally. She can start, stop, and change direction quickly, and easily. She is a super fun, little, handy horse.

Next, Lara Sat Down With Shannon And Her Dad, John, To Chat About Some Of His Favorite Ponies Over The Years… LARA: You’ve had some amazing horses, some of which have become real fan favorites at Arranmore. I’d love to know where they come from. JOHN: You can buy them from other polo players. But the majority of the ones I’ve had have been Thoroughbred racehorses, that weren’t fast enough, didn’t win enough and at about 3 or 4 years of age, the owners sold them to us to develop for polo. We have a couple excellent trainers who work with them and asses if they have the talent and disposition we need. LARA: Yes, it always amazes me how fast and zippy the polo ponies look out on the field, but disposition-wise, you want them really quiet and calm. That surprised me. I always assumed you wanted the more fiery types. JOHN: No, it’s the opposite! They really need to be tractable and have good minds, not too easily excitable, otherwise the adrenaline of the game would be too much for them to be really trainable and do the job well. One that worked spectacularly was Deanna, who was just an amazing mare. She was so easy to play but faster than almost anything on the field and her lateral moves were brilliant. She was very, very special. That’s why I bred her to get Duke. We did an embryo transfer, so it was a really special effort to get him. LARA: Yes, Duke! Our good luck foal from season what was it one or two? SHANNON: Three! LARA: Right. We would go kiss him on the nose for good weather luck and people loved visiting him. And now he’s in training, right? But bigger than the typical polo pony, if I remember correctly. JOHN: Right. He’s pretty big but he moves beautifully. I am playing him this year for the first time. LARA: Fun! What’s his favorite treat? Is he a peppermint guy, or a cookie guy? (John and Shannon laugh) LARA: You never give them treats?? SHANNON: (emphatically) NO!! Nooo! See, this is why I laugh at you with your horses and their treats and… LARA: Ok, ok… (laughing…) JOHN: They are athletes and on strict diets. Really. But that’s it. Athletes. Either they have that or they don’t. When I’m buying a

horse, I try to think, you know, “Is he, or she, a dancer? Are they a ballerina?” LARA: Did your geldings, Pacman or Marley, have a story? JOHN: Marley has a great story. Marley’s mother was Marcy. And we bought Marcy from a really great 9-goal player. Highest rated American player. My Son, Tim, played Marcy and then when she got older we bred her and that’s where Marley came from. And Marley plays exactly the same way as his Mother. He’s a little short strided, very, very quick; very calm. Not top speed but you can do anything with him. And as you know he got a lot of personality. SHANNON: More and more personality as the years have gone by too. Now, we have to warn visitors that he’ll try to grab a sleeve, if you’re not paying attention. There’s a great photo of him that was a finalist in a big photography competition too. LARA: He’s our resident celebrity horse. How tall is Marley? JOHN: 15, 15.1. He’s perfect. The older I get, the smaller I like them...but then, there’s Duke. Oh, well. LARA: Right, me too! So, how about Pac Man? JOHN: We actually traded another player for one we had at the time, named Jackson, that he fell in love with and we ended up with Pac Man in that trade. He’s really, really high quality. He was named best playing pony at Oak Brook last year, at that really big U.S. Polo Association Alumni, 20-goal game, ridden by the same rider we got him from originally. So, that was cool, full-circle. Pac Man has also been on several fox hunts now too. Just steady-Eddie. LARA: Oh, cool! And he’s the one who is just a little bigger at 15.3 JOHN: Right. He’s very comfortable. And he’s quick, but very balanced. He’s one of my go-to horses. Him and Sicario. LARA: I don’t know Sicario. JOHN: It means “Assassin”, or “Hitman”. He’s named that because he’s small but he doesn’t know it. Barely 15 hands but he’s like a Jack Russell Terrier. He’ll go into a play with energy and he’s very, very, very, easy to play and quick. He was 13 when I bought him, which I don’t mind, buying a little older horse, as long as they are sound and the conformation holds up. It’s all about conditioning. They can play into their 20s. LARA: And then there’s the baby, Starstruck. Will we see him at the farm this summer? JOHN: Starstruck! Yeah. Our “big hope”. He might come up. But he’s only 11 months old now. He needs to grow and be a horse. He’s turned out in Elizabeth on the hills and we’re really excited about him. He’s perfect. Perfect conformation. Great disposition. LARA: It will be fun to do this again in a few years; talk about him and see what kind of story he ends up having. JOHN: Exactly. We have to keep buying, rescuing and breeding the best horses to keep the sport going strong. And they all have a cool story.
