LAS BRISAS + ARRANMORE When Larry Aschebrook was growing up on a cattle ranch out west, with horses all around him and a mile-long list of farm chores, he didn’t envision a future with resonating themes. Fast forward twenty or so years, a gap of time largely horse-free, and lo and behold, he finds himself once again in a life that centers around hard work and equines. Larry chuckles when he relays how he got into polo in the first place. “My wife wanted to find a competitive outlet for me. She knew I’d grown up around horses and riding. She saw a Groupon for polo lessons and thought I might enjoy it. That was my Christmas gift that year.” Apparently, her instincts were right on. He got that first taste of polo and never looked back. The beautiful Las Brisas Polo Club in Elgin, IL grew into a well-loved facility, mostly for private tournaments. Aschebrook found himself getting more and more engrossed in the sport, becoming involved with the governing bodies, as well as making a lot of connections along the way with other players and club owners. That is how the Arranmore – Las Brisas relationship began. As the owners of the Arranmore Farm + Polo Club in Oswego, the Greene family was extremely active in the sport, so it was no surprise that as Larry became a more central member of the community, he got to know the Greene family and played alongside them. Eventually, the family patriarch, John Greene, started to play less. His son Tim, who also played polo for many years, took on more of the family real estate business, which meant scaling back on polo for him as well. It left an opening for a serendipitous opportunity to pass the torch…or perhaps, more aptly, the polo ball. Larry recalls how it all came together. “My love for the sport was really building and I was thinking about ways to expand. At the same time, Arranmore was this beautiful, public facility that needed a bit of an infusion of new life. So, last year, we launched a pilot program, ‘Las Brisas at Arranmore’, to bring some tournaments there. It went really well; so, when the opportunity presented itself to make the partnership something more long-term, I decided to go for it. Everything just fell into place at the perfect time.” The vision for Las Brisas at Arranmore is simple, really… and expansive. Aschebrook muses, “The Midwest doesn’t have a conventional polo club, the way that other geographies do. At the same time, polo is

10

2021 LAS BRISAS AT ARRANMORE POLO CLUB SEASON

growing in membership and popularity here. Having a traditional polo club at Arranmore will support the desire for a thriving polo community”. With polo always at the center of the mission, Larry also wants to continue the Greene family’s vision for opportunities to draw in the general public. “We’ll still be partnering with Shannon Greene Robb who has been producing events at the farm for years now. We want to keep going with the popular tailgating event, Wine Down Wednesday, for sure. We also want to offer those opportunities for weddings and concerts, much like in the past. Basically, we want to continue to invite people in to experience this beautiful place, while also growing the sport we love so much”. The opportunities seem endless and the future bright. With the continued legacy of all the Greene family has built and the fresh energy of Larry and his family, there is little doubt that Las Brisas at Arranmore will be a beacon of community engagement and world class polo for years to come.

POLO RIDER CLUB 2021 Did you know that Polo actually used to be an Olympic sport? It was part of the games, beginning in 1900 and went on for another four cycles, ending in 1936. Certainly, the challenge of International play and the declining numbers of professional players after World War II led to it being left behind. However, there is a concerted interest in reviving polo to that highest level of competition once again. The International Olympic Committee did, in fact, vote to recognize polo as an eligible sport in 1996 and was accepted as a demonstration sport in 2018 for the summer Junior Olympics. One might think that the tail end of a Worldwide pandemic and stringent travel restrictions might not be the most opportune time to further International efforts to gather for tournament play. One would be wrong. In June of this very summer, while the Olympics will be preparing to play out the expansive “thrill of victory and agony of defeat”, polo will be making a quiet but important step toward reigniting International play, with the first annual Polo Rider Cup in France. The inaugural tournament will take place from June 10th-20th, at the beautiful Polo Club of Chantilly, just north

20

2021 LAS BRISAS AT ARRANMORE POLO CLUB SEASON

of Paris. Twelve teams from around the world will compete, including teams from France, USA, Hong Kong, Germany, Spain, Russia, Switzerland and Italy. The tournament will be sanctioned under the international rules of polo enacted by the FIP (Federation International of Polo). There will be a 10/12 goals handicap, 5 chukkers per game, for a total of 20 games. Logistics have been taken care of on the player end. The event has been sanctioned under an International sports allowance. It has been approved by the French Association of Sports as a meaningful sports event, which allows for passes issued to enter the country. On the pony side of things, it gets a little more complicated. International travel for an entire string of team horses is prohibitive on many levels. The answer to this is an elegant ambassadorial solution; ponies being lent to the players by the local club in France. The goal, no pun intended is to show that there are enough teams at Medium goal level (between 12-14 goals) to make a comeback as a viable, competitive Olympic sport. The literal World of polo will be watching closely and cheering on the teams, in the hopes for an exciting, promising ten days of play, that lead to much bigger and better things in the future, even as we all emerge from a challenging year. A veritable light at the end of the tunnel that we are all grateful to see. So… “Bonjour and Play Ball”!

A FARMHOUSE

with History

About 4 miles away from Arranmore Farm + Polo Club, sits the sight of our farmhouse. The ORIGINAL site. Looking at it now, it seems it always sat, proud and stately, as the crown jewel of our farm. In reality, it was once just Bob and Phillys Harvey’s family home. It was actually picked up and moved to where it now stands in 1999. Yup. Minds blown, right? The process was fairly involved. Holes dug. Ramps set up to drive in and out. Pneumatic pumps are used to raise the building up above ground level. Before it’s moved, the footings and base of the walls are poured. Then the basement walls are poured. Once that all dries, the house takes its leisurely 5-6 hour commute, all while the photos remained hung upon the walls. Bob Harvey was born and raised in that house. He spent his whole life there, with his wife Phyllis and their family. A house full of memories that would have fallen silent, alone and eventually probably torn down, if not for the vision of John Greene to actually pick it up, move it and allow its presence and history to grace a blank slate, waiting for its own new beginning. It wasn’t the first house John had moved. It was, in fact, the fourth. However, it was the first to take up residence on his farm. His new farm, at the time. (The previous polo hotspot was Naperville Polo Club), which was demolished due to development. Now, as developments continue to pop up all over the once quiet, rural landscape, Arranmore remains a largely untouched, peaceful sanctuary, with the old Harvey farmhouse standing sentinel, just inside the main drive. For years, the farmhouse served as the offices to John Greene Land Company. Eventually, as that venture grew and moved to larger offices, (in the middle of those very developments that now peppered the area), the house stood mostly quiet again. There was some storage use. A private office. Then, just under ten years ago, the next generation of Greene family entrepreneurs started haunting the halls- a team of collaborators, working on a brand new venture.

2021 LAS BRISAS AT ARRANMORE POLO CLUB SEASON

23

Ideas flowed, meetings were held, plans were made and the rooms of the old farmhouse came alive again. The team evolved and new events were introduced. Musicians and singers watched from the upper deck, as the first CabCab audiences streamed through the gates. Polo attendees mingled on the lower decks, as they were introduced to the sport. Arranmore Events blossomed, as the newest enterprise. More plans were made. More events were born. Then, in January of 2018, a frozen pipe burst on the third floor and water rained down through the house, from top to bottom. Though many would call this a small disaster, the Arranmore team saw it as a big opportunity. Renovations began to restore and revitalize the home. Walls were removed on the second floor, to create a beautiful, sun-filled gathering space. Other areas of the home were brought back to their original glory. Once work was complete in May of 2108, the old farmhouse practically glowed from within. Now, the glow shines outward in the form of the welcome it offers everyone who walk through its original doors. Only two families have ever lived in the old farmhouse, since it was originally built in 1918, over a hundred years ago. But countless people have become part of the Arranmore family through their experience within its walls.

LEFT HANDS & LOGOS Sometimes an article gets personal for the writer. This was one of them. For far too long the plight of left-handed people has been overlooked! Imagine my excitement when I got the chance to interview Larry Aschebrook, head honcho of Las Brisas, about his own personal struggle as a left-handed human being, in a right-handed world? Except, basically…he said it wasn’t a struggle. Oh. I pushed back a little, because if you look at the Las Brisas logo, you’ll notice something a little unusual… the player featured is playing, you guessed it, left-handed. When, I bring it up, he admits, with a tinge of pride, it was in fact intended as a subtle pushback on the very traditional sport. Now, to be fair, the rule that one cannot play left-handed (YES, there is an actual LAW against playing with the mallet in the left hand – WHAT??) is for safety. Oh. Well. If it’s for safety…I guess we can all live with that. It truly is a practice that helps keep everyone moving along the same planes of travel and avoids any

27

wayward mallet flailing and balls running amok, flying in precarious ways through the air…even more than usual. It also, more importantly, keeps all the mallets on one side of play and avoids a dangerous tangle of hooves, legs, balls and sticks. But it also presents a clear challenge for anyone who does not conform to the right-handed majority. So, Larry decided to view it as a challenge (which was big of him, if you ask me). Actually, I, like Larry, am a bit ambidextrous. He says that at this point, it would probably be a challenge to play left-handed as he’s gotten so used to the conventional, legal, hand of play. I wondered aloud: “How can this change? Should it? Is there a way to play some games where everyone has to play lefthanded; flip the entire game into a crazy, Alice in Wonderland, mirror image, backward and upside-down Mad Hatter tea party-type challenge”? At this point in the interview, Aschebrook (deservedly) laughs at me. The answer is: “probably not”. Still, I couldn’t help but recall the epic sword fighting scene from Princess Bride and how cool it would be in a polo context. “You are wonderful [at polo]”! “Thank you. I’ve worked hard to become so”. “I admit it. You are better than I am”. “Then why are you smiling”? “Because I know something you don’t know”. “And what is that”? “ I am not [a] right-handed [polo player]!” “Well….NEITHER AM I!”

Left-handed polo playing was initially banned back in the mid-1930s, due to safety reasons. With players often riding head-on towards each other in pursuit of the ball, if a righthanded player were to approach a left-handed player, at the dizzying speeds often reached within the sport, a dangerous head-on collision would be a real risk. Thus the use of the left hand to play the sport was banned, for the safety of both the rider and the horse. Using the right hand only allowed polo to follow the principles of driving a car on a two-way road, with everyone keeping to the same side, and the risk of collisions vastly reduced. However, in 1974 the United States Polo Association (USPA), the official governing body of the sport of polo in the United States, reinstated the ban. At this time the number of polo players had risen, allowing the sport to concentrate on the safety of those involved once more, reverting to the right-hand only system. In their rulebook today the USPA state: ‘All players shall play with the mallet with their right hand, with the exception of left-handers registered with the USPA prior to January 1, 1974.’

Players all switch to left-handed play and off they go!! I know we’re not likely to see that kind of scenario in the sport of polo and even Aschebrook, with his left-handed logo goes with the flow, playing right-handed. But, well…a girl can dream, right? 28

PONY PROFILE It might seem obvious to say that horses are integral to the sport of polo. Streaking across the field at break-neck speeds, turning on a dime and competing for the coveted tournament title of “Best Pony”, it’s easy to take for granted the journey each of them took to get to that point. Now, first things first; polo ponies are really horses. They are traditionally called ponies but in reality, an actually pony is about four inches, or the equine term, “a hand”, shorter than your typical polo “pony”. The breeds are varied. Many are racehorses, who didn’t make it at the track. Many are carefully purpose bred. And each player needs a string of several horses, switching between chukkers. There is even an art to which horse to use at what stage of the game. Between the grounds at Arranmore and Las Brisas, there are about 150 horses stabled, owned by a variety of members and pro players, including Larry Aschebrook himself. So, we decided to put him on the spot and asked him to pick his top two favorite ponies.

BOOMER

FINANZA 36

2021 LAS BRISAS AT ARRANMORE POLO CLUB SEASON

BOOMER

He gave us a pretty sentimental answer for his number one. A fifteen-year-old Thoroughbred mare, by the name of Boomer. Not only was she Larry’s first personal polo pony, she is the first horse Larry has owned, that didn’t belong to his parents as a kid. He found her about a year into getting serious with the sport, all the way back in 2012. Boomer was one of those Thoroughbreds from the racetrack that just didn’t have to goods for racing. She was trained by local polo pros, who specialize in transitioning horses to their new career. Larry took his time searching for his first ever polo pony and she was the lucky one to catch his eye and clique with him as a partner for his new passion. You can hear the smile in his voice, when he speaks fondly of her athleticism and beauty, describing her nearly black coat, with a flashy little white star on her face and sock on one leg, to complete the picture.

2021 LAS BRISAS AT ARRANMORE POLO CLUB SEASON

37

FINANZA

Aschebrook’s second pick is a newer addition to the string; a dappled grey mare, named Finanza. She has been on the Las Brisas team for two years now and is a nine-year old, Argentine Polo Pony, purpose bred for the sport. The breed of Polo Pony is one made up of other breeds, predominantly Thoroughbreds and in this case a Quarter Horse, which also qualifies her for a breed registry known as the Appendix Quarter Horse. The combination of Thoroughbred speed, heart and lungs, combined with the close couple, niftiness of the Quarter Horse is an ideal combination for polo. The Quarter Horse blood also tends to be a nice leveling factor for that sometimes-hotter Thoroughbred blood. In Finanza’s case, her competitive nature isn’t dampened on bit though. She knows her job and will even chase the ball down without any direction from her rider! A horse like that, who truly knows and loves her job is always going to be a stand-out in our books, and apparently in Aschbrooke’s as well.

When you see these equines going flat out, nostrils flared, hooves flying; it may be surprising to know that the best polo ponies are actually quite docile and steady tempered. If you really stop to think about a typical day-in-the-life-of a polo pony though, it makes sense. When they aren’t on the field, there is a lot of snoozing at the trailer, waiting for their chukker to come up. It’s also important to have that delicate balance of competitiveness and an ability to keep their mind in the game and connected to their rider, even in the intense pressure and close-quarters of polo play. Wherever they each come from, every “pony” is special and fills an important niche in each rider’s string. Fans of the game tend to pick favorites as well and it’s always fun to identify the horses that have made an indelible impression on the players. Next time you’re at a game, pick your own personal Best Pony and give them a little extra loud cheer when they go flashing by, in all their glory. 38
