We are not architects who do healthcare. We are healthcare architects
What does this mean?
It means we chose this profession so we can do more than just design buildings. We chose it to design solutions that can change people’s lives significantly. Because when a transplant patient receives a new heart, or a mental health patient reaches a breakthrough, or a physician develops a medical procedure that improves the lives of thousands, it happens inside a space designed by a healthcare architect. This is why we arrive every morning with our sleeves rolled up and ready to work.

As a healthcare-exclusive practice, our focus is singular, and our commitment to a collaborative approach facilitates operational excellence and drives innovation.
PLANNING
Array goes to great lengths to substantiate our solutions with hard data. Our pragmatic process, intensified by our unique planning toolkit, enables more-informed decisions to maximize flexibility, efficiency, and return on investment.
INTERIOR DESIGN
Beyond creating beautiful spaces influenced by hospitality, we have a responsibility to bring the latest evidence, benchmark data, lean thinking, and examples of successful projects into the design process. By doing so, we help our clients realize their full potential to drive a change in culture, improve patient outcomes, increase patient satisfaction, and foster an environment of collaboration.

Array Advisors
Discovering Your Healthcare Solutions Together.
We help clients deliver more efficient and effective care, stake a more competitive position in the market, and plan to ensure facilities embody their operational vision.
STRATEGIC PLANNING
Reach consensus around strategy to supercharge your plan for the future. We work with health systems to develop strategies that drive sustainable business models across the continuum of care.
MASTER PLANNING
We have learned that while master planning engagements can transform an organization, the outputs of the traditional process are inherently broken. Master planning teams either omit the necessary perspectives, or these roles are siloed or filled by external consultants, creating delays and limiting rapid re-assessments. As Lean planners, we improve the value of master planning by redesigning the process. Array not only facilitates discussions between key stakeholders representing different perspectives, but our team brings its own functional expertise. The team’s broad experience builds credibility with stakeholders across the organization and advances data-driven discussions of needs and priorities.
PRE-DESIGN PLANNING & OPTIMIZATION
Lean is an operational strategy that can be used to achieve specific goals defined by your organization. Our experience extends from strategic decision making, where we help you define organizational goals, to tactical workflow analysis, where we assist in developing countermeasures appropriate to your specific situation. We use this as a foundation to develop a more robust program alongside your leaders setting your project up for success as design begins.

AMBULATORY CARE CENTERS
Healthcare is in flux, and the design for ambulatory care centers has been impacted. We recognize the changing functions of these sites and the importance of accommodating more complex procedures and efficiency.
Ambulatory services are a critical linchpin in the development of comprehensive, integrated care networks that can deliver cost-effective services and achieve high levels of patient satisfaction. Architects must orchestrate a process that allows for operational improvements and adjustments while maximizing space utilization and patient throughput. Current and future trends in ambulatory care underscore the high-growth, high-change nature of ambulatory care facilities and the need for flexible design—now and into the future as they continue to serve more people in more ways.
Multispecialty clinics are becoming more popular, with a number of services sharing the same space. This arrangement allows for increased space utilization, increase integration across specialties, and less capital cost. The expectation is for improved patient outcomes, increased patient satisfaction and greater market share through cross-referrals.
COOPER UNIVERSITY HEALTH CARE
Moorestown
Moorestown, NJ
Campus
Cooper University Health Care’s transformation of a retail structure at the Moorestown Mall into its largest outpatient facility is more than just adaptive reuse—it’s a revolution in accessible community care. By repurposing this space, Cooper brings cutting-edge medical services closer to the Moorestown, New Jersey community, eliminating the need for lengthy trips to the main hospital while expanding their presence in a new market.
The three-story, 166,000 SF facility is designed to integrate seamlessly into the bustling commercial area while also standing out as a beacon of health and vitality. Through bold architectural choices like “Cooper Red” perforated metal screens and large expanses of glass, the building revitalizes the area and becomes a focal point for both healthcare and community engagement.
Taking advantage of the expansive floor plates and high floor-to-floor heights, the first level is anchored by a large central spine linking the entrance and registration area to the mall’s main circulation axis. This “medical mall” concept includes a self-service café marketplace, connected care technology hub, visitor support services, and other amenities, adding convenience for patients and integrating Cooper Moorestown into the overall mall experience. The overall interior aesthetic emphasizes warmth and tranquility, using warm wood tones and textural finishes to create a home-like environment. Technology and artistry are thoughtfully integrated, with immersive screens displaying calming natural scenes to help reduce the stress of medical visits.
CLEVELAND CLINIC INDIAN RIVER HOSPITAL
Health & Wellness Center
Vero Beach, FL
In conjunction with Anchor Health Properties and Indian River Medical Center, Array designed a 72,000 SF integrated medical home model health and wellness campus. This phase features a multi-specialty physician practice center with integrated diagnostics and health education. The building shares a healing garden with our recently completed cancer center and is designed to allow provider synergy between the programs.
A series of early process and design prototyping work sessions allowed us to create a universal exam room built for optimal flexibility. The exam room is universal
for all specialties and primary care. Using this universal room in a standardized pod configuration allows Indian River to flex the boundaries of each individual service line on a moment’s notice without the need for renovation or cost.
The facility’s design helps Cleveland Clinic advance their mission to educate the public on healthy living and provide chronic disease management care and interventions. This project features cross discipline care coordination and unified patient experience while being a market differentiator for Indian River.
EMBLEM HEALTH Medical Office Building
Brooklyn, NY
A modern, cutting-edge development at a prominent intersection in Brooklyn provides a comprehensive care experience for the community. With major highway access, subway stations and high-traffic bus routes, the building truly serves to expand this System’s services to a large population. The neighborhood care center occupies a portion of the first floor with its own entrance while connecting internally to specialty services.
The folded articulation of the glass in the upper stories respond to solar heat gain by self-shading with tinted reflective glass sloping upward and clearer glass below allowing sweeping views of the skyline. The rippling effect transfers below to a perforated metal cloud shrouding the parking deck while allowing light and air to flow through. At night, the whole building-the tallest in the area-
glows as a beacon. Parking and patient dropoff are raised to the second floor, allowing the sloped canopy to pull pedestrians in at the first floor level. Vehicular traffic can flow through the building, dropping passengers off at the 2nd floor Lobby and continuing out to street level. The facade was fabricated as a modular system allowing for a simplified install from the interior of the building, reducing street closure logistics.
The ground floor holds specialty services including urgent care, imaging, phlebotomy and a non-compounding pharmacy. Elevators pass through the parking levels to the sleek and modern patient waiting area located along the angled glass facade. Offices are located off of the main concourse arranged in a simple manner to allow for the greatest flexibility in the ever-changing clinical specialties.
NEMOURS CHILDREN’S HEALTH
Outpatient & Surgery Center
Deptford, NJ
When a national children’s hospital decided to move into a new market, they needed to move quickly. As with all ambulatory projects in today’s competitive environment, being first to market with the right product at the right cost is critical. But it’s tough to move quickly when you are building a project unlike any other in your system.
Array Architects and Nemours Children’s Health used a process-led design approach to rapidly define and design a new, fully integrated multispecialty outpatient center that features flexible provider clinics, physical therapy, diagnostic imaging, wellness and ambulatory surgery. Our approach, using Lean as a foundation, allowed Nemours to work through complex questions about integration, resource
deployment and business/revenue implications while studying physical configurations and cost structures to support them. All of this was achieved without sacrificing commitment to capital budget objectives as well as schedule.
Process-led design employs a rigorous and engaging approach to quickly define goals and obstacles. Process-before-design encourages the integrated team to focus on experience, quality, outcomes and workflow before specific spatial configurations begin to limit innovation. Process mapping, visual programming, virtual and physical mock ups as well as rapid prototyping were used in parallel during the early design phases to ensure the optimal solution.
MONTEFIORE HEALTH SYSTEM Hutchinson Campus Ambulatory Care Center
Bronx, NY
Array provided planning and design services for the complete fitout of this 12-story surgery center and medical office building at Montefiore Health System’s Hutchinson Campus. Ambulatory surgery and support services are distributed across three floors including waiting, prep/recovery, physician lockers and sterile processing. Great care was taken to properly connect the ORs and services that were located across several floors to ensure maximum efficiency and patient safety. The facility includes a full imaging suite with two MRIs, two CTs, four Radiology rooms, mammography and ultrasound.
The seven upper clinical floors are based on modules and pods so space can easily be increased or decreased between groups as volumes dictate. Rooms can easily swing
from office to consult to exam rooms due to standardized configurations and provided infrastructure. Multiple points of entry were also carefully monitored due to patients who self-park, those who take mass transit and those dropped off. With these conditions came additional requirements for security and emergency preparedness.
The design centers on the patient experience by incorporating artful details, an abundance of natural light and clear wayfinding for seamless transitions for patients, staff and materials. The lobby is inviting with an 80-foot mural depicting natural landscapes lining the curved walls and is accompanied by an open information desk and ample seating for patients and visitors.
JEFFERSON HEALTH Navy Yard Multispecialty Outpatient Center
Philadelphia, PA
When Jefferson Health and Aegis Project Management engaged Array to design their first-ever multi-specialty clinic, our team had the privilege of working with Jefferson Health leadership to create a landmark facility at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Transforming a building that was once corporate home to the NBA’s 76ers and the Tastykake Baking corporate offices, we were challenged to create a flexible and changeable space in a growing location. Employing mock-ups, user engagement exercises and a lean planning process, we gained consensus among multiple specialties, users and staff to design a facility which drives collaboration, delivers convenience and enables coordinated care.
The comprehensive, 56,000 SF renovation included adding a communicating stair; mechanical and plumbing upgrades; additional
fireproofing; and, elevator upgrades to set the stage for transformation to a multi-specialty health center. A variety of specialties located in the facility span the spectrum of care, including core, complementary, destination, supporting and consultative services in one location.
A light, bright and comfortable interior with curvilinear features helps soften the edges of the building. An approachable and welcoming atmosphere was prioritized in the design to appeal to multiple user groups, including millennials working nearby, South Philadelphia natives who are accustomed to more traditional healthcare experiences as well as mobility-challenged patients. Jefferson Health’s new facility satisfies their goal of creating a consumer-oriented health home and regional health care destination.
WHITE PLAINS HOSPITAL
Medical Office Building, Pediatric Emergency Department & Inpatient Center
White Plains, NY
MEDICAL OFFICE BUILDING
In order to better serve their community, White Plains Hospital engaged Array to provide architectural design and construction administration services for the renovation of their Medical Office Building (MOB).
The client’s goal for the renovation was to develop a Family Health Clinic program that consists of Behavioral Health Services, a Family Health/Multiple Sclerosis Clinic and an additional
program space which complies with Article 28 and OMH regulations.
In collaboration with St. Vincent’s hospital, two of the floors are programmed for Behavioral Health Services, offering individual and group therapy for a wide range of patients. To meet these needs, the upper three floors of the existing MOB were completely gutted for the clinical program.
PEDIATRIC EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT & INPATIENT CENTER
Noticing a significant uptick in both emergent pediatric visits and inpatient census, a combination pediatric emergency department and Inpatient unit supported by a single clinical team was designed. The new center will be the only of its kind in New York State and have 11 ED treatment rooms and 12 pediatric inpatient beds, as well as various family and support space, including radiology, play room and lounge. The patient rooms were planned with input from family advisory council members.
The Pediatric Center is designed to convey a child-friendly aesthetic appropriate for children of all ages and providing positive distractions for both patients and family members. It has been demonstrated that both private room and same-handed configuration have significant advantages in the critical care setting including fewer errors, shorter length-of-stay, less
disruption to the patient and the ability for improved communication between caregiver and families during their stay. All rooms will have critical care medical gas and electrical capacities, physiological monitoring, dialysis box and data in support of nurse call, communications and diagnostic technologies. Family amenities include in-room refrigeration, family daybed, wardrobe with safe, lighting options, family education and TV/patient experience technologies geared to children.
The interior design reflects Hudson Valley imagery. The palette builds on a neutral foundation with bold colors used for highlighting focal elements and sources of inspiration drawn from images of nature, literature and imagination. All materials selected were chosen with aesthetic, maintenance and durability in mind.
MEDICAL OFFICE BUILDING
DOYLESTOWN HOSPITAL
Ambulatory Surgery Center
Doylestown, PA
Doylestown Health, in association with Anchor Heath Properties, engaged Array Architects to design a new outpatient facility on the Doylestown Hospital Campus. Relocating services from the hospital to expand and increase inpatient surgery capacity was the primary goal for the new outpatient center and was achieved by transitioning more cases to the outpatient setting. Relocating rehabilitation services from the main hospital allowed for renovation/expansion opportunities as well as increased capacity that their growing rehab program requires.
The project design complements the existing campus infrastructure while making an
impactful statement as the new front door to the campus. The ambulatory center allows for better patient accessibility and a more centralized location of services provided to patients. The new site provides increased and dedicated parking for rehab and surgery patients as well as more patient friendly curb less entry into the building.
The public spaces are filled with natural light, and a glass enclosed staircase encourages healthy movement through the building. A central conference space anchors the first floor and provides opportunity for large and small training sessions and meetings.
CAPITAL HEALTH
Hopewell Medical Office Building & Integrated Cancer Center
Pennington, NJ
In association with HKS, Array designed a new 328,000 SF cancer center and medical office building for Capital Health. Serving as a companion building to a new, stateof-the-art, 237-bed replacement hospital for the System, the facility is joined to the new hospital by two-level medical mall. The building consists of five floors with suite sizes ranging from 1,000 SF to 10,000 SF. The building houses a combination of hospital-based outpatient services and physician practice suites. Array was engaged to space program, plan and design each suite individually.
First floor services include a comprehensive cancer center with state-of-the-art linear accelerators and cyber knife therapies to treat patients on an outpatient basis. Second
floor functions accessed from the mall include a four OR ambulatory surgery suite. Infusion programs are vertically connected by the lobby atrium and medical mall. The infusion bays have access to and views of a roof garden developed over the cancer center’s first floor.
Our team was tasked with not only designing hospital functions, but retail functions as well, including gift shops, a spa, a public resource library, a business center, a coffee shop and a bistro. The Oasis Spa was designed to offer full spa services to the public, visitors and patients. The Oasis Spa was also designed to service oncology patients because of its location adjacent to the cancer center.
KAISER PERMANENTE Medical Office Buildings
Abingdon & Baltimore, MD
Array’s team worked collaboratively with Kaiser Permanente to expand their health network north of Baltimore, Maryland by planning and designing multiple medical office buildings in key locations. The interior design of each building pulls from the vibrant culture of the area in which it is located. The design team incorporated Kaiser Permanente’s Total Health Environment concepts for each location to create facilities that are consistent with the experience members have grown to expect as Kaiser Permanente continues to improve it’s facilities in this region.
The planning of the buildings challenged Array’s design team as each location had a relatively small foot print and required many functionalities as well as ample space for growth. By designing centralized nurse stations, the team was able to reduce the amount of administrative space throughout each facility.
Rotating specialties allow for each facility to serve member needs and avoid building over before gaining the appropriate numbers within this new area.
COLUMBIADOCTORS
Multispecialty Practice & Imaging Expansion
Tarrytown, NY
Columbia University Medical Center engaged Array Architects to expand their ColumbiaDoctors medical practice in Tarrytown, New York. The expanded facility includes a new vestibule with a canopy to provide convenient access from the parking area. The floor plan facilitates collaboration among physicians and is laid out with patients’ needs in mind. Colorcoordinated signage and accent walls help patients navigate the facility.
The project was carried out in two phases: phase 1 included the renovation of the first floor in the West Building to offer comprehensive medical care, including radiology, cardiology, ortho, rehab, neurology, surgery, lab, and staff support. The medical practice is outfitted with a suite
of diagnostic imaging services—CT and MRI, IR, fluoroscopy, and ultrasound, plus 22 exam rooms and rooms equipped for procedures such as cardiac stress tests.
A CT scanner originally installed as part of this renovation was replaced in 2021. NewYorkPresbyterian Columbia University Medical Center returned to Array in 2020 to analyze technical architectural and MEP aspects to ensure the new equipment would be compatible with existing room layout and infrastructure. Input from and coordination with GE (CT Vendor) was important, and we organized and facilitated this component in conjunction with overall project planning, design, and management.
