Jefferson Health Medical Office Building Philadelphia, PA
Jefferson Health engaged Array to provide design services to expand their health services provided at the Philadelphia Navy Yard by renovating the 3 Crescent Drive building. The System’s vision for the facility is to have a consumer-oriented health, home and regional health care destination. Goals of the project are to create adaptable, interchangeable space to allow for flexibility as needs and volumes change. Services projected to move into the new building were carefully chosen to complement each other and attract the young population in the area. Specialties include Primary Care, Women’s Health, Men’s Health, Cardiology, Dermatology, Neurology, Pain Management, ENT, Audiology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS), Medical Subspecialties, and Surgical Subspecialties. Other support services provided in the building in an outpatient setting will include Specimen Collection (Phlebotomy), Retail Pharmacy and Imaging.

Capital Health Medical Office Building Pennington, New Jersey As a companion building to a new state-of-the-art 237-bed Replacement Hospital for Capital Health, Array in association with HKS, designed a new 328,000 SF Cancer Center and Medical Office Building. Joined to the new Hospital by a twolevel pedestrian mall, the building consists of five floors with suites ranging from 1,000 SF to 10,000 SF. The building houses a combination of hospital-based outpatient services and physician practice suites. Additional MOB Services include a comprehensive Cancer Center with state-of-the-art linear accelerators and cyber knife therapies to treat outpatients; outpatient Imaging with radiography, nuclear medicine, 3.0T MRI, CT and PET/CT equipment; and, Spa services tailored to Oncology patients which include wig fittings and lymphatic massages. Floors three through five are dedicated physician office space. Corridors overlooking the five story atrium connect the MOB/ Cancer Center with the Medical Center and allow for easy access for physicians who have rounds to make. Infusion programs are vertically connected by the lobby atrium and pedestrian mall. The infusion bays have access to and views of a roof garden developed over the Cancer Center’s first floor with a coffee bar adjacent to the roof garden. An additional second floor function accessed from the mall is a four-OR ambulatory surgery suite.

Capital Health Medical Office Building Patient and family engagement was very important to the client’s overall vision, so the design team was asked to not only design hospital functions but also gift shops, a spa, public resource library, business center, coffee shop and bistro. The Oasis Spa was designed to offer full spa services to the public, visitors and patients, with a particular focus on cancer support.

Columbia University Medical Center Westchester Expansion Tarrytown, New York New York-Presbyterian Columbia University Medical Center engaged Array Architects to expand their medical practice in Tarrytown, New York. The expanded practice includes a new vestibule with a canopy to provide convenient access from the parking area. The floor plan facilitates collaboration among physicians and is laid out with patients’ needs in mind. Color coordinated signage and accent walls help patients navigate the facility. The project was carried out in two phases: phase 1 included the renovation of the first floor in the West Building to offer comprehensive medical care, including radiology, cardiology, ortho, rehab, neurology, surgery, lab and staff support. The medical practice is outfitted with a suite of diagnostic imaging services - CT and MRI, IR, fluoroscopy, ultrasound plus 22 exam rooms and rooms equipped for such procedures as cardiac stress tests. Phase 2 included cosmetic renovation to the Physical Therapy Gym in the East Building.

Emblem Health Medical Office Building BROOKLYN, NY

A new 160,000 SF seven-story Medical Office Building with elevated parking, is designed to provide outpatient medical services at a bustling Brooklyn intersection. Serving the community in this urban setting, the building was strategically located near major mass transportation to attract patients to the health system’s expanding services. The project is one of the largest and newest buildings in the neighborhood and will act as a catalyst for community growth. Urgent Care and Imaging, which have high walk-in patient volumes, were placed at the ground floor, setback and surrounded in highly visible storefront, under a continuous marquee, to help connect to the urban fabric. Vehicular traffic is directed discretely off the street, up a ramp into three levels of parking, cloaked in a back-lit veil of custom perforated soft white metal panel. Physician practices are located on the top three floors of the building with a draped in articulated glass wall. The folding glass wall was parametrically designed to respond to mitigate late afternoon solar gain, as well as provide stunning views of the city from the waiting areas.

The spatial organization supports each patient’s clinical, emotional and physical needs and provides a safe and efficient facility allowing caregivers to deliver healthcare in a compassionate environment. Activity rooms and dining areas feature partial height partitions and glass walls to provide visibility from the support zones and also allows natural light to flow through the central areas. Large scale, impactful art serves as a wayfinding device at key entry portals, complemented by soothing colors and materials.

Kaiser Permanente Medical Office Building Baltimore, Maryland
Kaiser Permanente has engaged Array Architects to redevelop and relocate its outpatient medical clinic facilities serving their members in downtown Baltimore. Array is transforming an existing retail space on the ground floor of the existing 815 East Pratt Street parking garage into a patient friendly, full service medical center that includes a variety of outpatient clinics, diagnostic imaging, laboratory services, and a pharmacy. Array is incorporating the Kaiser Permanente Total Health Environment concepts to create a facility that is consistent with the same Kaiser Permanente “total health� experience that members and prospective members have grown to expect as Kaiser Permanente continues to improve it facilities in this region.

Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital Health & Wellness Vero Beach, Florida
In conjunction with Anchor Health Properties and Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital, Array designed a 72,000 SF integrated medical home model health and wellness campus. This phase features a multi-specialty physician practice center with integrated diagnostics and health education. The building shares a healing garden with our recently completed cancer center and is designed to allow provider synergy between the programs. Built for optimal flexibility, a series of early process and design prototyping work sessions with stakeholders from each practice yielded a universal exam room for all specialties and primary care. Using this universal room in a standardized pod configuration allows Indian River to flex the boundaries of each individual service line on a moment’s notice without the need for renovation or cost. The full project is designed to promote prevention, education and healthy living in addition to providing chronic disease management and interventions. The project will feature cross discipline care coordination and a unified patient experience while being a market differentiator for Indian River.

Lean process improvement is a powerful tool to enhance the patient experience as well as improve staff efficiency. Beginning with a clear target outcome, we used Lean tools to help the client streamline their arrival and check-in process. We are presently designing a multi-specialty integrated medical home outpatient facility on Indian River Medical Center’s Vero Beach, FL campus. The new Wellness Center will be home to six physician practices, an imaging center, two therapy sites, fitness center, and a resource and education program. The team desired only one stop upon arrival for patients to check-in despite the programs occupying four floors. Our team brought together the departments and providers including Registration and Information Technology to understand the opportunities and limitations of the available systems and develop a seamless integration of the different programs. To minimize wait times, check-in is decentralized by floor, however, all patients will have to ‘check-in’ at only one location to begin their visit.

Sean Parker Institute for the Voice New York, New York In order to serve their performing arts clients better, Weill Cornell expanded its Institute for the Voice in a neighborhood convenient to many voice professionals. In a building with a mix of business and residential zoning, the Sean Parker Institute for the Voice now occupies a portion of the first and second floors with a discrete entrance separate from the residential entrance. The space includes exam and procedure rooms specifically designed for the diagnosis and treatment of voice disorders. These rooms are acoustically designed to support gathering high-resolution audio and visual data of patients’ voices and throats, providing the tools for precise diagnosis of their conditions. Speech pathology rooms are acoustically designed to be virtually soundproof. This allows voice performers ranging from actors screaming their lines to opera singers performing at full volume, to work with speech pathologists in the same location. This collocation will further foster the holistic care environment for which the Institute is renowned. The expansion of Weill Cornell’s ENT Department off-site allows vital services to expand within the confines of the Weill Greenberg Center for better adjacencies. The expansion will also allow for enough space to facilitate clinical trials. The Weill Cornell Brain and Spine Center shares waiting, support and mechanical space with the Sean Parker Institute for the Voice.

Mount Sinai Health System West Campus Medical Office Building New York, New York Previous owners were in the process of converting the building to a school on 58th Street in Manhattan when construction was stopped. The building’s infrastructure and street facing facades had been completely removed and significant structural alterations were underway including the installation of a major transfer beam/truss and the removal of floor slabs. To transform this building into a 100,000 SF Article 28 ambulatory care facility capable of supporting the needs of the selected service lines, major renovations and replacement of the building’s superstructure; core and shell; infrastructure; and, enclosure was required. This project was taken through design documentation.

Mount Sinai Health System West Campus MOB Using Lean principles as a foundation, our work started with understanding their current operations. Through direct observation and process mapping of the existing service lines, we worked with user teams to accurately capture the current operational process and develop an idealized operational model. This allowed us to identify any target areas for process change before making design assumptions. Through multi-disciplinary, interactive user workshops, we confirmed the spatial needs for each department then studied how the parts related to the whole. Understanding how patients, visitors, staff, materials and information move through the project informed the needs of each clinic.

Mount Sinai Health System Center for Health and Healing New York, New York The Mount Sinai Health System Center for Health & Healing’s primary focus is on wellness and offers an integrated, preventive approach to medicine. Their practice has been at the forefront in the U.S., integrating sustainable materials and practices as well as feng shui principles. Demand for The Center’s services drove the need to expand their practice. Array designed an expansion plan which doubled their practice space while allowing the original practice to operate during design and construction.

Materials requiring no-wax or those that are maintained with “green” cleaning solutions were sourced within the project to ensure optimal air quality. The project accomplished Mount Sinai Health System Center for Health & Healing’s goal to transform the quality of healthcare and its delivery toward a more holistic model conscious of the role played by the environment in the healing process. Demand for the Center’s services grows and is expected to increase as healthcare in the nation continues to shift from one focused on illness and reaction to one of wellness and prevention.

Mount Sinai Health System Beth Israel Medical Group New York, New York Beth Israel Medical Center, part of Mount Sinai Health System, offers a broad-based fully integrated health services network throughout the New York City metropolitan region. After their lower Manhattan family practice patient base increased beyond the capacity of their offices, Mount Sinai committed to quickly expand capacity. Mount Sinai selected a building at the corner of 8th Avenue and 23rd Street for the expanded practice. The project included the renovation of a three-story building adjacent to a popular restaurant. Mount Sinai’s new facility provides a multitude of resources for their patients. The new walk-in, primary care medical practice is located on the 2nd floor, while the 3rd floor serves the specialty practices such as dermatology, radiology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, GI, cardiology and pain management. The design features a new curtain wall and façade that incorporates the client’s brand with LED-illuminated panels and signage. The exterior now draws patients to the space and defines the entrance with a matte silver façade that is vibrant blue in the evening.

Mount Sinai Health System Beth Israel Medical Group This 16,500 SF renovation is now a benchmark facility for Mount Sinai and is considered a ‘Center of Excellence’ for ambulatory care. The architecture promotes Beth Israel’s brand, announces the presence in the neighborhood and helps attract new patients. The interior design promotes better workflow and clinical efficiencies for the staff. The modern design and warm wood tones contribute to a strong first impression and inspire confidence in the patients and their families alike.

St. Elizabeth Healthcare Ambulatory & Urgent Care Center Covington, Kentucky Following a merger/acquisition of two hospitals located in the Cincinnati metropolitan area, St. Elizabeth Healthcare recognized a need for a new Ambulatory Care Center to serve as a ‘Gateway for Health’ to increase its profile in the Cincinnati metropolitan area’s growing market. Array sited this new, three-story, 120,000 SF Ambulatory Care Center facing a major interstate to increase public awareness. A “Main Street” circulation design provides convenient access to all services including central registration and reception, community conference zones, bistro, gift shop and patient education center. This amenityladen spine follows the length of the building with access to Imaging and Lab Services and the 10,000 SF Urgent Care Center. The Urgent Care Center promotes an optimal patient experience with a focus on convenience. Patients are warmly greeted, then invited to use the latest technology for registration. Retail amenities ensure patients and visitors have an engaging, positive experience. Exterior landscaped views and an intimate reflection garden, beautiful artwork and rich colors and textures serve as orienting devices for both patients and staff. Second and third floors house physician offices, Dialysis and Diabetes Center for primary and specialty care.

St. Elizabeth Healthcare Ambulatory Care Center The Ambulatory and Urgent Care Center provides services to this growing area of northern Kentucky. The facility promotes an outpatient experience where the patient can be scheduled more conveniently and treated quickly in a more patient-centric clinical environment. The building was strategically located on a major interstate that fronts the site and has direct access to the facility. Ambulatory Care services are located on the first floor for public access and cross utilization of staff. The “Main Street� facilitates clear circulation to all services.

Catskill Regional Medical Center Medical Office Building Harris, New York Catskill Regional Medical Center’s new Montreign medical office building is a highly adaptable clinical platform designed to adapt to the needs of its community over time. The 12 exam room space is designed to support a range of general and specialty medicine along with the opportunity for urgent care services supported by an imaging suite comprised of X-Ray and CT capability. Exam rooms are designed to maximize flexibility with a cart system for storage of supplies based on the use of the room for the day. A central team work area is designed with a mix of space types for “heads down” focused work and face-toface or digital collaboration. Care was taken to shield the work space from the corridor to preserve visual and auditory privacy.
