Diagnostic & Treatment Diagnostic imaging and testing has increasingly become one of the most important program areas within a hospital environment. Accommodation of rapid changes in equipment and technology can lead to costly changes in facility construction when flexibility is not incorporated into design. Equipment can be daunting and stressful for patients. Proper scaling of the room, so technicians can stay close to the patient while performing their tasks, and choosing tranquil colors as accents may bring a sense of calm to patients, making the procedure less traumatic.


Montefiore Medical Center Technology Projects Bronx, New York

Always at the forefront of cutting edge treatments, Montefiore Medical Center continues to initiate critical radiological and surgical advances that offer patients countless benefits. Array has designed state-of-the-art technology practices throughout Montefiore’s campuses including: Da Vinci Operating Room - Moses Campus, Foreman Pavilion — consolidation of existing ORs into a state-ofthe-art Da Vinci Surgical System and HVAC Infrastructure upgrade. Radiographic Imaging - Weiler Campus, Medical Park, and Moses Campus — renovations and replacement of radiographic equipment, control rooms, PACs and support spaces. Cardiac Catheterization Lab 3 Replacement - Weiler Campus, currently in construction — Renovation and replacement of Cardiovascular X-Ray System in Procedure Room, new equipment, control room, lab including reconfiguration of support spaces.

St. John Medical Center Surgical Services Westlake, OH

As a result of St. John’s Strategic Facilities Master Plan, completed by Array, it was determined that key Medical Center services were in need of expansion and modernization to support the quantitative demand and vision for the future. Functionally, the hospital needed to increase their capacity to serve a growing outpatient surgery service, centralize their services for outpatients and provide a more intuitive circulation to and within the hospital. Array worked with St. John Medical Center and a team of consultants to develop new additions bracketing an existing emergency department and renovating space to provide a new entrance and services and amenities for patients and families including convenient parking and improved site circulation. The addition includes a drop-off canopied entrance, lobby, patient registration, key diagnostic and treatment services, and a bistro. The west addition includes two new operating suites, a post anesthesia care unit, endoscopy procedure rooms, a pediatric inpatient unit, and a clinical decision unit for the emergency department. The renovated area converts a shelled second floor space to an outpatient surgery preparation and recovery unit. Located in a suburban setting, the hospital site has rich landscaping, open spaces, outdoor seating and dining as well as a walking path. The new site layout preserved the better qualities of the site amenities while simplifying pedestrian and vehicular circulation, providing more convenient parking and lending intuitive architectural cues for wayfinding and access.

Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children Hybrid Catheterization Lab Wilmington, DE Ranked among the nation’s best in pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery by U.S. News & World Report, families from across the country—and around the world—come to the Nemours Cardiac Center. To meet this demand, the hospital needed to expand its cardiac intensive care unit and wanted to build a new hybrid operating suite, but expansion space was extremely limited. The new Catheterization Suite was designed as a hybrid Bi-Plane Catheterization Lab and Support Space. The shell space where the hybrid lab is located was planned when Array designed the 21,000 SF NICU/CICU expansion. (Which serves as Prep/ Recovery space for cardiac patients). The shelled space allowed the existing Catheterization lab to continue service while the new hybrid lab was under construction and brought on line. The new suite is configured so that a second Catheterization lab can be constructed with minimal operational impact during construction.

Capital Health Surgery Suite Pennington, NJ

The site for this suburban six-story, 570,000 SF new hospital with an integrated 330,000 SF Medical Office Building was constrained due to wetland restrictions. Capital Health tasked Array with maximizing the available footprint to support the anticipated volume of inpatient and outpatient surgeries. We recommended a chassis design that integrated all of the diagnostic, treatment and surgical components and provided direct adjacencies. The diagnostic and treatment support core is linear, connecting the inpatient bed tower with the outpatient services and medical office building. This resulted in collocating all the interventional suites and positioning them on one floor. Surgical waiting was combined for inpatient and outpatient family members. An integrated pre-op/holding suite also increased throughput times. The success of the chassis design is reflected in a 26% increase in General Surgery volume and a 52% increase in Orthopedic Surgery volumes. LEED Gold Certified – Capital Health Hopewell is one of 28 hospitals in the country to receive LEED Platinum or Gold status.

Seidman Cancer Center Interventional Suite Cleveland, OH

As part of a system-wide Facilities Master Plan, University Hospitals engaged Array to provide programming and planning services to determine design options for a new Cancer Hospital to centralize the various cancer care components that were dispersed throughout their four-block campus in downtown Cleveland. In order to maximize the available footprint for the new hospital and its patient rooms, we recommended that the new Cancer Hospital be sited adjacent to the existing inpatient surgical platform, which would be renovated to include an interventional platform. Demand analysis quantified the need for four additional operating suites, including an intra-operative MRI, along with a 10-position Pre / Post Recovery pod adjacent to the existing PACU dedicated to cancer patients. Since its opening in 2011, Seidman Cancer Center has been recognized as one of the nation’s top hospitals, according to U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best Hospitals rankings. In 2012, Seidman was Ranked 18th for their cancer care.
