KOH LIPE Koh Lipe Koh Lipe, pronunced Ko Lee-pae, is the southern most island in Thailand and one of the many Butang Islands located in the beautiful Tarutao National Marine Park, close to the Malaysia border. Lipe was first discovered by the Chao Ley (or Sea Gypsies) that was traveling from island to island in search of the best fishing to get food to their tribes. They eventually found a permanent home on Koh Lipe and were given a grant to settle on the eastern part, at Sunrise Beach, and have since remained there. Many compare Lipe to the Maldives, which is easy to understand. It does not get much more paradise than this! The water around the island is crystal clear in a beautiful turquoise color and the beaches have the softest white sand. Here its easy to relax on one of the island’s many beaches. Pattaya Beach is the most popular, Sunrise Beach is the longest beach and Sunset Beach is the smallest beach. There are a number of smaller beaches on the island where you you can be more to yourself. Some of the beaches can not be reached by foot, they reach only by boat! Koh Lipe is one of more than 50 islands belonging to the Tarutao National Marine Park and you may therefore pay a national park fee when you get to the island. For adults the fee is 200 baht and for children, 3-14 years 100 Baht. Even though Koh Lipe will hit many tourists during the high season, you will experience the real Thailand and everything has a very local feeling. Open-air restaurants in wooden bungalows, mini-marts in small shacks and there are no roads or cars on the island. The most popular things to do on Lipe, besides sunbathing and swimming, is scuba diving and snorkeling. Considering the clear water the visibility are very good and the marine life here is absolutely fantastic, with a variety of fish and cool corals. Take the opportunity to take a diving certificate or embark on a nice snorkelling trip! Pleasant stay in paradise - Ko Lipe!

KNOW ABOUT
KOH LIPE 1. Ko Lipe is in Southern Thailand Ko Lipe is in Southern Thailand’s Satun province close to the border to Malaysia, in the northern state of Perlis and close to Langkawi “The Jewel of Kedah”. Lipe is a small island in the Adang-Rawi archipelago, which is part of Tarutao National Marine Park with a total of 51 islands. Lipe is located south of Koh Adang and Ko Rawi and described so small that it takes not more than 1 hour to walk around the whole island. The original settlers called “Chao Ley” or Sea-Gypsies still exist there.
2. Getting to Ko Lipe There are different ways to get to Koh Lipe but easiest is by speed-boat from Pak Bara, Satun or Langkawi in Malaysia. You can also travel from Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Trang. If you travel from Kuala Lumpur, you can fly to Hatyai and take a mini-van to Pak Bara Pier and further by speedboat to Koh Lipe or fly to Langkawi and take the boat from Telaga Harbour. You just need to check in and check out at the Immigration Counter before taking the boat to or from Langkawi. You get all the information about this on the spot.

The police station is behind Immigration on Pattaya Beach. There is also a small hospital at Sunrise Beach that takes care of any minor damage and makes it safer for both locals and tourists in the event of accident or emergency.
5. Seasons - high peak and low seasons. If you plan to travel to Koh Lipe its useful to know that there is a high and a low season that differ greatly from each other. High season is from Nov to May. (Peak Season Dec to Feb). During high season you can take a ferry or speedboat from Pak Bara, Langkawi, Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and Trang. 6. Ko Lipe three main beaches Although Koh Lipe is a small island, there are three bigger main beaches (in addition to other small private beaches), Pattaya Beach, Sunrise Beach (Hat Chao Ley) and Sunset Beach (Hat Pramong). All the beaches are lined with hotels and resorts. Pattaya Beach This is the largest and most frequented beach, most boats stop here. There is a white sandy beach with velvety sand, clear blue water, often crowded with people sunbathing until late afternoon. Both Immigration and the police station is located on this beach, near the southern end, cose to Walking Street.
7. Chao Ley Fishing Village & paintings Chao Ley or “Sea Gypsies”, still live on the island. They live in the fishing village on Sunrise Beach, at the middle of the beach, or near the entrance to Walking Street. Since the village is not a tourists place there are no real signs. But you can ask around where to go. A nice little town and recently there are a project to promote it. There are paintings around the village that shows historically how the sea-gypsies lifestyle looked.
Sunrise Beach, or Hat Chao Ley This beautiful beach covers the entire eastern side of Koh Lipe. You can probably see all the way to Ko Tarutao during a clear day, when really good weather it is said that you can see all the way to the island of Langkawi, but I’m not sure. There are two small islands just outside Sunrise beach, Koh Kra and Koh Usen. The small school, the hospital and the Chao Ley village is here. Hence the name Sunrise Beach? Simply because you experience the best sunrise on the island here. A good place for those who want to sip morning coffee while taking advantage of the beautiful sunrise. Sunset Beach or Hat Pramong Sunset Beach is a small bay that lies on the north-western part of the island. The beach is more laidback and more greenery in comparision to the neighbor beaches. The beach gets its name from that you experience the sunset best here!
8. Walking Street & Nightlife You’re probably wondering if there is some nightlife in Koh Lipe? The answer is yes! You can find it at the Walking Street, the pedestrian zone that stretches from Pattaya Beach to the center of the island. A pedestrian street filled with small shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, massage centers and convenience stores. Walking Street may not be as grand as on other tourist-intensive islands in Thailand, but it’s good enough. You can find a lot of eateries and bars and pubs that are cheaper than the restaurants at your hotel. Looking for a foot massage? -you can find a couple of massage centers here and a lot of souvenir shops. Pricing is slightly higher here than what you pay in Satun or Hatyai but the beautiful atmosphere make Walking Street, a must-visit.
9. Muslims and Halal food Many of the permanent residents on the island are Muslims and therefore many restaurants with halal food on the menu at Walking Street. The Halal restaurants can easily be recognized by their sign and through the menu. Thai version of “Roti Canai” is very popular here, among others, such as fresh fish and seafood. There are of course other food (non-halal) on Walking Street and bars and pubs. Please note that food prices in Lipe is higher compared to the mainland.
