WELCOME TO
KOH SAMET Beaches: Most of all the beautiful beaches are located on the east side of the island. If you arrive with a slow boat you will certainly end up at the North Na Dan Pier and from there you travel by Songthaew which is a pickup taxi with two outdoor seats. There are more than 10 different beaches on this side. The most popular is White Sand Beach and Wong Duern Beach! Shopping: The best place for shopping you can find around White Sand Beach. I would not say that Samet is a shopping destination, but you can find most of what you need for your days at the beach and maybe a little more. Restaurants: There are a number of restaurants in Samet. Most of them are located at White Sand Beach and Vong Duern Beach and on the road from the ferry to the national park office (WSB). The beaches also have good performances with a fire show every night. Many restaurants on the beach will set up their buffet with seafood and other nice dishes, all at affordable prices. However you can expect the prices to be about 20 percent higher compared to the mainland. Just lean back and enjoy while you eat and drink! Nightlife: The nightlife on Samet consists mainly of the activities on each individual beach. Most of the nightlife you will find at the two biggest beaches, at White Sand and Wongduern Beach. After the fire-show they usually arrange more party for those who have the energy and just do not want to go back to the room.... yet. You may as well sleep in your sun chair the day after - cheers!

One of the most Beautiful islands Koh Samet is according to many one of the most beautiful island in Thailand with wonderful sandy beaches and clear waters. For those who like the underwater world there is lots of colorful fish and beautiful coral reefs to discover. The island is a marine national park and popular destination for many Thais, mostly during the weekends because Samet is easily accessible from Bangkok (about 2 hours). But also a lot of tourists have fallen in love with the small island. It is the perfect hideaway for those who want to take it easy for a few days, weeks or years. If you belong to the group of restless souls, a few days on Samet will be enough to strengthen the calmness in your body. If compare Samet with other more tourist intense locations there are not the same range of activities. Here reigns the calm, beache-life and a laid-back existence.
Getting to Ko Lipe Koh Samet is just 7 km. long and about 2.5 km.s wide, which means that you can hike along to discover the island’s gorgeous beaches. The beaches at the north is the most visited and the further south you go, the quieter it gets. Koh Samet became a national park in 1981. The appointment means that it is forbidden to litter and break branches from trees and shrubs. All over the island you can find signs “Do not leave anything here except your footprints.” It is from the fishing village of Ban Phe you will arrive to Koh Samet. You can choose to travel by speedboat or more slow-moving boats that are also the cheapest. Speedboat will be dropp you off at your beach while the slow boats usually arrives to Na Dan on the north side. In Na Dan is a pair of 7-Eleven stores and ATM machines (ATMs), a few restaurants and resorts and mc-rentals.
Facts about Koh Samet Koh Samet can be reached by boat from the small fishing village of Ban Phe. There are about 1000 residents on the island which is only 5 square kilometers. The highest mountain is amazing 125 meters above sea level, almost dizzy heights! The highest point in the whole Rayong Province (which also is the Province of Samet) Khao Tha Chut, measuring 706 meters in height. Everyone who comes to Samet pay “admission fee” to the national park of approximately 200 Baht.
Tours and tripstip Koh Samet is known for its beautiful surroundings, white sandy beaches and clear blue waters. There are some islands outside Samet which can be visited by day-trips, such as Koh Man Nai (Turtle Island), Koh Talu and Koh Kudee. Several tour operators offer day tours by speedboat to the three nearby islands. Usually, the journey begins on Koh Man Nai, where “Sea Turtle Conservation Center” is located. They take care of the turtles after birth to release them in the ocean after they grown enough. The journey continues to the islands of Koh Talu and Koh Kudee where the area’s best reefs are.
Actions All beach activities like jet ski, banana boat and parachuting are lined behind the speedboats. But be prepared to pay little bit more than what it costs in most other places in Thailand. The tiny paradise island has understood its value! Do you want to get acquainted with the island, make a day trip by boat. Snorkel, fishing and jump between all of the beaches, it all ends with you visiting the sea turtles, sharks and other cool fish swimming in cages.
Restaurants Barbeque is served up on the beaches in the evening and consist of fish, shrimp and crab and other seafood. There are kebabs and meat dishes for those who prefer to have meat. Prices of seafood is usually affordable and there are plenty to choose from. Seafood is usually freshly caught from the sea and with a wide range has made it a popular dining option.
Golf in Rayong There is no golf course on Samet. The nearest course (The Emerald Golf Club) is however on the mainland, about 30 minutes drive from the ferry location, Ban Phe. In Rayong province are currently six courses and another 15 or so are located northwest of Ban Phe, against Pattaya, within 1,5 hour drive, in Chonburi Province.
Best beaches Koh Samet’s best beaches are on the east side of the island. Hat Sai Kaew “glass-sand-beach” is the longest beach on the island with about 900 meters long. It is also the most visited beach on the island. Vong Duen Beach in the middle of the island is also a popular beach where you can find many bungalows and restaurants located directly adjacent to the beach. Further south on the island, there are fewer bungalows and restaurants. However, there are several very nice beaches on the south side and the water is even clearer there.
Where to stay Its difficult to know exactly where to stay if visiting the island for the first time. Koh Samet is actually a very small island and no matter which beach you chose to stay on, you can easily get to other beaches in less than 15 minutes. Generally speaking, most of the top resort are located at Saikaew Beach, which is also the busiest beach on the island. Ao Vongduan Beach is also popular, but most of the beaches offer a variety of choices and are good choices to stay.
Diving on Koh Samet Samet offers really good places to dive and snorkel. There is plenty of tour operators who offer boat trips around the island, 4-islands trip 600 baht/person or 1200 Baht for 7 islands. They usually make a few stop for snorkeling at the island’s southern tip and visit the fish farm on the island’s northern side. Travelling to Samet to take diving certificate is however not the cheapest pleasure. From 12,000 Baht and up is what you can expect to pay. Nightlife Sai Kaew Beach is the best place for those looking for party and are popular among young people. Here you can find most of the islands restaurants and bars. The beach is wide and has a wonderfully soft and white sand. In the evening the beach is served up with low tables and cushions where you can watch the fire show while enjoying a delicious dinner or just sipping your drink if you feel like it. Fire show usually launch around 20 o’clock in the evening, a groovy experience and in my mind, the best fire-show in Thaland!

RAYONG ISLANDS Koh Samet is one of the paradise islands of Thailand. Here you will find gorgeous beaches, beautiful coral reefs and wonderful cosy restaurants. The island is a marine national park and popular destination for Thai people, mostly during weekends. One reason is that Samet is easily accessible from Bangkok (about 2 hours). Also a lot of tourists have fallen in love with the island. It is the perfect refuge for those who want to take it easy for a few days, weeks or years. If you compare Koh Samet with other more tourist-intensive places there is not the same range of activities. Here reigns serenity, beaches and a laid-back lifestyle. Koh Kudi (Kudee) - Koh Kham - Koh Platenee located East of Koh Samet and about six kilometers from the mainland. Here the water is very clear and you can lay down on a nice beach and just enjoy doing absolutely nothing. The island has only one beach which reduces any decision anxiety. Swim, sunbathe, snorkel or take a walk to discover the island on your own. Koh Kudi with the neighbouring islands Koh Kham and Koh Platenee (only a stonetrhrown between each other) is excellent for a day trip and gives variety to the mainland beach during your vacation. Koh Chan lies a short trip south of Koh Samet and is not to be confused with Koh Chang! You may want to get to Koh Chan to experience the fantastic snorkelling at the island’s southern coast. If you want to head out to deeper water for diving, you should go to Koh Chan south east coast. Here you can find depths usually around 12 meters but in some places may go down to as deep as 25 meters. The marine life at Koh Chan is awesome and you can encounter lion fishes, sharks, stingrays and other colourful smaller species. Koh Mun Islands are located just east of Rayong, approximately 5 km from Mae Phim beach. The islands are incredibly peaceful and beautiful. Here it is easy to find harmony. The archipelago consists of three islands: Koh Mun Nai, Koh Mun Klang and Koh Mun Nork. Koh Mun Nai is the turtle sanctuary that was founded by Thailand’s Queen Sirikit. Here, the beautiful sea turtles are bred and well taken care of before being released into their natural habitat. Ko Man Nai is also a habitat to the large flying fox. It feeds exclusively on fruits, nectar and flowers. Koh Talu is another paradise island with a beautiful beach (see cover pic) and great snorkelling. On Koh Talu you can expect to be mostly to yourself as there is no one living on this island. There are also few tourists and no beach vendors. On the east side there are nice beaches while the western side mostly contains of cliffs and overgrown woodland. Snorkelling is especially good on the back side of the island. One of the cliff walls on the West side of the island has a hole in it, and that is where the island gets it’s name. Talu means “hole” in Thai while “Koh” means Island. So literally the direct translation would be “Island Hole”.

Samet has recently completed the work on a long sought after concrete road which today leads all the way from Na Dan Pier to the National Park Office in the far South. Previously, the road was beneath contempt and there was lot of accidents, especially during rainy days. I hope the negative spiral turned and that there been a big reduction of accidents! Still, it is important to maintain a low speed and always wear a helmet. DONT DRINK AND DRIVE! Passing Je´ps Bungalow on the new road

Beaches
What beach to choose on Koh Samet? The largest beaches and most visited is located on the northern part while the further south you go they tend to be smaller and more private. If you chose to visit a new beach for a day you should know it is no longer distance between them. Samet is only 4 kilometers long, and since 2014, there is a new concrete/tiled road all the way from Nadan pier to the south tip where the National Park Office is located. The road is long awaited and will make the trip much more pleasant for those who want to visit the beaches in the south. If you visit an other beach in the evenings and want to be late, it can be good to plan your return trip because songthaews do not operate all night.

Sunthorn Phu and the epic story of Pra Aphai Manee
Phu was raised in Bangkok but later returned to Rayong to visit his father where he wrote one of his most famous poems, called Nirat Muang Grang. He wrote the poem for his fiancĂŠe, Jun who he later married and they had a son named Pat. It was at this time that King Rama II appointed him court poet. However, the couple were not married long, divorcing after Phu had an affair with another woman. This was the first of many marriages ending in divorce. Phu became an alcoholic, and, around 1821, was jailed after a fight. He began the epic poem, Phra Aphai Mani in prison, and published it in installments over the next twenty years. Phu was a regular visitor to Samet where much of the story was written.
Every year on the 26th of June he is commemorated by a festival at Sunthorn Phu Memorial Park in the southeastern city of Klaeng. Statue of Pra Aphai Manee with his flute in Klaeng

The Story of “Phra Aphai Mani” Written by M.L. Manich Jumsai
Phra Aphai Mani and his brother, Sisuwan were Thai princes who were sent to study by their father as he hoped they could use the knowledge gained to rule the country, but Phra Aphai came back with the knowledge of playing the flute and his brother learnd to sword-fighting. Their father was furious and drove them away.
Phra Aphai came to Phleuk where the queen asked him to rule the country. Suwannamali was still angry at Phra Aphai for daring to give her up to Usaren, so she fled to become a nun. With the trick of a maid, Nang Wali, Suwannamali left the nunhood to marry Phra Aphai. She bore him twin daughters named Soisuwan and Chantasuda.
But the flute Aphai had learned was a magic flute. The sound from the flute could put people to sleep and take the soul out of their body causing death. One day while Aphais companion was lulled to sleep by the sound of the flute, a giant came and took Aphai away to her cave where she transformed herself into a beautiful girl. He lived with her until she bore a son, Sinsamut. When Aphai found out that his wife in reality was the giant, Nang Phisua Samut, he fled with his son. He was assisted by a family of mermaids, father, mother and a daughter. The father and mother were caught and eaten by the giant. The daughter took Aphai and Sinsamut to Kokaew Phitsadan (Wonder Island) where a hermit saved them from the giant.
Usaren and his father came back to attack Phleuk. The father was killed and Usaren died heart-broken. The throne of Lanka fell to his sister, nang Laweng. A very beautiful Laweng decided to take revenge and she declared to all the princes in countries around that whoever could kill King Aphai would have her and her Kingdom. Nine armies moved to surround Phleuk. Aphai followed Laweng and won her love but the war continued until a hermit came and helped to stop the war between them.
The young mermaid later bore a son with Aphai, called Sutsakhon. One day a ship went by the island. In the ship were King Silarat of Phleuk with his daughter, Princess Suwannamali. She was engaged to marry Prince Usaren of Lanka. Aphai and Sinsamut asked to follow them on the ship, but on the way the giant attacked them and killed King Silarat. Aphai escaped to the shore and had to play the flute which eventually killed the giant. Sinsamut swam with the princess to an island and continued their journey and met Sisuwan and his daughter, Arun Rasami. They went on in search of Phra Aphai. Phra Aphai met Usaren who came out looking for his fiancee, Suwannamali. They went together until they met Sinsamut and Suwannamali. She refused to go to Usaren. There was a fight, and Usaren fled back to Lanka.
