South Thailands arcipelagic Krabi Province A large part of Krabi province has long been the seat for several national parks. The topmost popular destinations are Noppharat Thara, Ao Nang and Railey although Phi Phi islands and Koh Lanta may be the most popular islands to visit in the province. In addition to these there are about 80 smaller islands in the archipelago, many of them are perfect for a day trip. Phi Phi Island is known as an ideal place for adventurers as; sailors, divers / snorkelers and day-trippers from other nearby islands. Krabi has growing rapidly in recent years. Large shopping malls like Tesco, Big C and HomePro are established and a new international hospital has just been built and is now open. Krabi Town has a reputation of being a genuine Thai city. With the international airport, Krabi is seen as the perfect balance between convenience and lifestyle. People are attracted to Krabi in search of the idyllic beach life, such as Phuket and Koh Samui had 10 years ago but then with risk to losing that as they grow. Alternative places of entertainment is on the rise as hotels with international standard and attractions. To accommodate the influx of potential residents, many real estate companies building high-quality homes and housing especially for foreigners. Koh Lanta National Park also located in Krabi province, includes several coral fringed small islands with well-known dive sites. The largest island, Ko Lanta Yai, is the site of the national park’s headquarters and is also home to Chao Le, or sea gypsies who still largely subsist by fishing. The islands are best visited during the months of October to April, when the monsoon is at its gentlest mood. In daytime there are activities like kayaking, sailing, bird watching and scuba diving / snorkeling. Some of the islands in the province offer interior scenic attractions as waterfalls, caves and opportunities for hiking, bird watching and eco-tours. To Railay Beach, close Ao Nang, climbers crowding from all over the world (it is also the site of Rock & Fire Festival that is hold every year). As the climbers arrived there where many “Rock Climbing schools“ established on Railay beach, both for beginners and those with experience.

หมู่เกาะเกาะช้าง Koh Poda - A small lime stone island located 30 minutes by boat from the mainland, 2-300 Bath / person. The size of the island is not more than a kilometer in diameter and it is covered with palm trees and soft white sandy beaches stretching nearly all around the entire island. Koh Poda is sometimes mentioned as Thailand’s finest island. There is no accommodation on the island. Chicken Island - Located a short distance south of Koh Poda. A small island that is polular to visit for a day trip. The name comes from the rock which rises on the island looks like a bird. Koh Tup Tup Island also known as Tub Island, Koh Tap or Koh Thap is one of the most popular offshore islands around Krabi for day trips, between Koh Gai and Koh Poda. Koh Mor Mor Island is a really small island about 70 meter away from Tup Island. When low tide the islands are connected with dunes and its possible to walk from one island to the other. Koh Hong This is actually a group of limestone islands including Lao or Sa Ka, Lao Riam, Pakka, Lao La Ding and Hong or Lao Li Pe Island which is the biggest island to the south. These islands include fine beaches, shallow and deep-water coral reefs and various kinds of fish. Popular activities are snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing and canoeing. Koh Phai Bamboo Island is one other paradise-like island not far from Koh Yung (Mosquito Island) and worth visiting for its beauty and here is a coral reef near the beach for those who likes to snorkeling. The best time to visit is early morning when you can have the place almost to yourself. Koh Yung or Mosquito Island, is a limestone cliff rock about 700 meters long with 2 small beaches covered in Mosquitoes at sunset, hence it’s name. Longtail boats usually tie up on the south eastern shoreline for snorkeling while diving is mainly confined to the north eastern tip where there is a 3 headed pinnacle at 9-14 meters below low tide. 10

Koh Poda

Koh Jum Ko Jum is a small island between Koh Lanta and Krabi. While the south end of the island is called Koh Jum (Jam or Cham) the northern part is called Koh Phu (or Pu), which means crab on Thai. Jum concists of three villages and has about 2100 permanent inhabitants of which most feed on rubber cultivation and fishing. On the west side of the island there are about 25 resorts with price from 200 Thb/night. Phi Phi Island Approximately two hour trip from Ao Nang you can find this snorkel and dive paradise with velvety beaches and crystal clear waters. With its incredible beauty it is easy to see why Phi Phi is one of southern Thailand’s most popular destinations. Phi Phi consist of two islands, Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh. The islands are characterized by calm and a laid-back atmosphere. There are no roads, longtail boats is the best way to get around the island and the different beaches. Viking Cave Phi Phi Leh also has a cave called Viking Cave, or Tham Phraya Nak. The cave got its name to the walls are decorated with prehistoric paintings of Viking ships. Koh Lanta The trip with car takes about two hours from Krabi. Lanta islands is a stunningly beautiful place, consisting of two major islands on Thailand’s southern coast, Lanta Yai and Lanta Noi, which in turn is surrounded by a larger number of smaller islands (more tham 5o). It is to Koh Lanta Yai all tourists come to relax and enjoy the timeless magic and serenity beaches without modern distractions. On the western side of Lanta Yai is where all the nice beaches and resorts are while the eastern side offers more of what Thailand was long time ago with old traditions and culture. On the northern part of the island is the village of Sala Dan Village where the regular boat traffic, ferries to and from Phuket, Krabi and Koh Phi Phi. There is about 10 beaches on the western part of the island. In our opinion, the best one is located on the southern tip, in Mo Koh Lanta National Park.

Klong Mueng Beach The beautiful palm-fringed Klong Muang Beach is several kilometers of sand west of Ao Nang in Krabi area. At the village’s small town center there are a few restaurants, small shops and beach bars. Nopharat Thara Beach This beach is about 1 km north-west of Ao Nang Beach. A quiet beach, about 2 km long lined with casuarina trees that creates natural shade. No chairs and umbrellas! Use a beach mat and roll out your towel the perfect place for a day on the beach. Ao Nang Beach Pretty much the same as Nopharat Thara beach. The eastern part is the best and it is here you find all the small cozy restaurants and massage huts. In the afternoon you can say hello the local monkeys who comes down the mountain to search for food. They do not need to look long before locals come with big bags filled with goodies that monkeys gather around. Be careful if you feed them. They may, in their eagerness, and, competing become a little excited. Railay Beach not only attracts tanning and swimming enthusiasts, but also climbers, snorkelers and divers from all over the world. Railay Beach consists of beaches that are framed by dramatic high and beautiful limestone cliffs on either side of the headland. The main beach, West Railay Beach, is also the best for swimming. It spreads over half a kilometer of sandy beach, and when you want to swim, you have a shallow, clear and clean water to cool off in. Railey East This side of the cape consists of limestone cliffs which climbers from all arond the world are attracted to. Small restaurants, bars and good nightlife it is said:) From the east side is a walkway that leads to the Phra Nang Cave Beach. Ton Sai Beach is the quietest of the four beaches. Not many tourists managed to find here, so this is a good place for real relaxation. There are a few bungalows, a few restaurants, bars and a climbing school. Phra Nang Cave Beach Considered as the finest beach on Railey Beach. The beach has high rock walls and incredible caves, nice sand and beautiful clear water. On the east side of the beach is the Princess Cave, Tham Phra Nang Nok, which is dedicated to the fertility goddess. To gain increased fertility phallos symbols was sacrificed here. Nowadays the cave consists most of curious tourists, despite some sacrifices are still made here. Pai Plong Beach Until about 2005, Pai Plong was a small, deserted beach between Ao Nang and Railay Beach. To get there you had to either swim around the rocks at the end of Ao Nang or rent a boat to get there. Today there is a narrow walkway, built of wood, over the mountain, with wits and some balancing acts it is a 15 minute walk. The beach is beautifully located, surrounded on three sides by tall limestone cliffs overlooking the ocean and islands. There is one resort to the beach, Centara Grand Beach Resort. 12

Hot Springs and Crystal Pool Or like thai say, nam tok rawn. Natural jacuzzi in natureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own hot tub in south of Krabi province, in Klong Thom district (about 70km from town). The water comes from thermal springs, originating deep underground in volcanic chambers. The hot spring is located in the jungle, with fresh running spring water at a pleasant 35-42C. Diving in Ao Nang’s archipelago The numerous dive sites around the Ao Nang’s archipelago offers home to many diverse micro-life that can be found throughout Thailand today. Here you can see different kinds of Seahorses, Pipe Fish and Nudibranchs. You can also find Mantis Shrimps, Coral Whip Gobie’s Porcelain Crabs and Durban Dancing Shrimp. Phi Phi Islands There are around 25 different dive sites in Phi Phi Islands suitable for both beginners and experienced divers. The beautiful view of the huge limestone cliffs rising up from the ocean is just an experience in itself. Phi Phi islands can be dived all year round and offers both varied and spectacular dive sites that also considered belonging to some of the best dive sites in Thailand. King Cruiser wreck & Shark Point The 85 meter passenger ferry ‘ King Cruiser ‘ sank on May 4, 1997 during a trip to the Phi Phi Islands. It was close to nearby Anemone Reef which brought an end to King Cruisers continued life above the water which today lies at approximately 30m depth as a popular dive site. The most interesting part of the wreck is the passenger deck and wheelhouse which ranges between 18 and 24 meters depth. Take the opportunity to visit some of the most spectacular reefs nearby, Shark Point and Anemone Reef. These places are suitable mainly for more experienced divers and for those who will make the Advanced Open Water course. Anemone Reef sticking up just a few feet above the surface but extends down to more than 25 meters. It is covered with anemones that harbor several species of corals. Here you can spot various Crustaceans, Anemones, Crabs and Seahorses. Shark Point is a place to get a glimpse of Leopard shark, one of the world ‘s most beautiful species. The dive site consists of three cliffs with around ten meters between each other. They are dressed by soft and hard corals. Here you can see shoals of Barracuda, Tuna and other beautiful species.

Breathtaking limestone cliffs shooting up like rockets in the sky on the beaches in Krabi and attracts climbers from around the hole world, especially to Railay and Ton Sai. It is not just the experienced climbers who find their way here, many beginners are also tempted to try the walls here, whether they are looking for an adventurous day or a more serious commitment to the sport. In Krabi the safer form of sport climbing “roped climbing” is practised. Metal brackets are attached close to each other permanently in the rock. Prices are also comparable (1000-1800-6000 Baht). You can book directly at the school in Railay, Ton Sai or Ko Phi Phi, or through any agent. With more than 700 bolted routes graded from F4 (easy) to F8C (pros), there’s plenty of room for both beginners and the more experienced. There is also the opportunity to try the latest fad, deep water-soloing. Heading out to an island and climb starts straight from the boat on a bare cliff overhang (no screws or ropes) - the water will protect you in case of fall. All equipment, from shoes to chalk, can be purchased or rented from the local schools. It is also possible to buy guidebooks with all the various local routes. Private guides, either for beginners or for experienced climbers are available. They know where to find the best routes, best suited for you. Travelling alone? -find a climbing partner through the climbing schools or message boards at climbing shops or find other enthusiasts in the area, maybe at one of the local beachfront bars.

Krabi Waterfalls Huay Toh Waterfall A magnificent waterfall in the Khao Phanom Bencha national park with 11 different levels originally from Khao Phanom Bencha (mountain). There are large natural pools where you can enjoy a cooling dip. The waterfall is about 500 meters walk from the park headquarters. The waterfall consists of five cascades with their own names, Wang Sam Hap, Wang Chong Loi, Wang Doi Prong, Thewada Wang, and Wang Ton Phrio. Huay Toh finally merges with Khlong Krabi Yai. Half-day excursion combined with elephant ride the whole family will enjoy. The price is just under 1 000 Thb. / Person. Klong Haeng Waterfall A 500 meter high waterfall also part of Khao Phanom Bencha National Park in Tub Prik, Krabi province. This one is a bit difficult to find, about 10km from Khao Phanom district office in Tub Prik.

Hin Phoeng Waterfall A 3-level waterfall that drops a distance of 800 meters to the pool below. A walk of 400 meters around the base of the hill is required to reach this waterfall. Located about 25 km from Khlong Thom District and can be reached by car along Highway No. 4 (Krabi-Trang), turning left at Khlong Phon Market and proceeding for another 8 kilometers.

Hot Spring and Emerald pool Hot Spring - Nam Tok Rawn About 70 km south of Krabi province, in Klong Thom district you will find nature’s own hot-tub, known as Nam Tok Rawn in Thai. The water comes from thermal springs, deep underground in volcanic chambers. This wonderful place you can find a bit into the jungle and has naturally eroded “bathtub” filled to the brim with fresh spring water heated to comfortable 35-42C. When it gets warm enough, take a few steps into the cool river below for a refreshing dip and to restore the body temperature. Emerald Pool - Sra Morakot This is one of the top things you should do when you visit Krabi. Enjoy the underground natural springs that flourish in Krabi province. The Emerald Pool or pond is not to be confused with hot spring, but it is cool water that is just heavenly to swim in. The water flows through the natural waterways which flow into the pool from freshwater sources on the hill above.

Railay Beach is a spectacular place. With four different beaches within walking distance, Ton Sai Beach, Railey West, East Railey and Princess Cave Beach. These beaches can be reached by a long tail boat in about 25 minutes from Krabi and Ao Nang. Railay has become something of a signature spot for climbers from across the world, which also gained international renown for spectacular rock formations that offer climbing in a spectacular way. Many climbers will also find the less developed Ton Sai Beach, within walking distance from Railey West at low tide. Krabi has the most beautiful groups of islands and beaches in the world. It is also geographically unique to Thailand with those protruding limestone rock formations. Railey West and Phra Nang Cave beaches are said to belong to the finest beaches in the whole of Thailand. Ko Jum is a small island between Koh Lanta and Krabi. While the south end of the island is called Koh Jum (Jam or Cham) the northern part is called Koh Phu (or Pu), which means crab on Thai. There is a road of concrete built as late as 2011 and the work still continues in 2015. Jum concists of three villages and has about 2,100 permanent inhabitants of which most feed on rubber cultivation and fishing. On the west side of the island there are about 25 resorts with pricing from 200 Thb/night. Most travelers arrive by ferry that connects Koh Lanta and Krabi and costs about 400 Thb. Departures take place once a day between November 25 to April 25. From Krabi 11:30 and 7:30 from Lanta (Koh Jum to Krabi 08:30, Koh Jum Lanta 12.30 - 400 Thb). Tickets can be paid on board but pre-booking is recommended because the ferry quickly gets full. Tickets can be purchased at local travel agencies or at your resort in Krabi. You can also buy tickets through the main ferry office at the new pier south of Krabi town on Thanon Khong Ka. There is no dock or pier on the west side of the island. The ferry stops at sea (about 500 meters from the beach) and are met by longtail boats that take you the last bit to Koh Jum Beaches. If you pre-booked ticket you will have pick-up to your resort, if not, the best is to jump off at the southern end of the island, closest to Koh Lanta with most resorts and places that rent out motorbikes. During low season longtail boats take you to Jum. From Krabi or Koh Lanta the price is about 2,500 Thb. one way. You can even make the trip via Laem Kruat Pier which is considerably cheaper. - From Krabi you can take a songthaew (blue / white truck - taxi) to Laem Kruat. They depart from 7- Eleven store or Siam Bank near the Chao Fah pier. You may have to travel via Nua Khlong, price about 20-50 Thb. from Nua Khlong Laem Kruat around 40-50 Thb. 36

Long tai boat arrives

The beaches on Koh Jum. The best beaches are on the western side where the water is very clear and nice during the high season, when not strong wind. Long Beach at the southwestern part of the island is the most popular and the longest beach. To find accommodation during the high season we suggest to book early. Beaches on the north part is shorter and with fewer resorts. Ferries from Laem Kruat to Ko Jum 06.30 to 16.00 cost about 100 Thb. The journey takes about 40 minutes. Transportation Nua Klong (departs 2 times / hour) to the ferry. Koh Jum is a relatively small island (as Koh Tao) (19km², 9.5 km long and about 1-2km wide). Most of the locals get around on small motorbikes and can also be rented, about 250 Thb/day. Local taxi service - motorcycle with sidecar (Laem Kruat - Mu Tu Pier 3km=200Thb). The roads between villages are narrow and often bumpy and can be challenging for inexperienced drivers. Taxi-ride from Ko Jum ferry port to most places in the south is 50 baht. A taxi ride to see all of the island’s main places costs 400 baht. To do on Jum Sunbathing, swimming and somersaults on the beach. A good book to read. For those who want to stretch the legs there are arranged day trips to hike up to the mountain of Mount Pu in the northern part of the island which is the highest spot, about 422 meters. You can visit the top with a local guide, the walk takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Koh Lanta - a island in the Andaman Sea Koh Lanta is a stunningly beautiful place, consisting of two major islands on Thailand’s southern coast, Lanta Yai and Lanta Noi, about 100 km (2,5 hour drive from Krabi). Krabi is surrounded by a larg number of smaller islands (around 50), many of them popular day-trip-destintions. It is to Koh Lanta Yai, all tourists arrives, to relax and enjoy the timeless magic and tranquility beaches without modern distractions. On the western side of the island you can find all the resorts and the lovely beaches. On the eastern side, time has stood still. Here you can take advantage of the genuine Lanta with old traditions and culture. In the villages “sea gypsys” living in harmony with the sea. The other island, Koh Lanta Noi is inhabited mainly by locals who subsist on fishing, rubber plantations and coconut groves. Tourism has in recent years taken over as the main nutrient. During the low season when Lanta more or less pauses, many resorts closes completely and opens in October again. On the northern part we can find find Sala Dan Village where the regular boat traffic arrives, ferries to and from Phuket, Krabi and Koh Phi Phi. If you continue south on Lanta you will reach Koh Lanta’s most popular beach, Khlong Dao Beach. The next beach is Long Beach, or “Pra Ae Beach” in Thai which is the longest beach on the island. An incredibly beautiful beach, surrounded by tropical jungle vegetation and cozy resorts. There are another 10 or so beaches on the western side of the island.

Although there are a lot of tourists arriving to Phi Phi Islands, it is still a place that needs to be visited to understand the fame of “Andaman Sea gems”. The main beaches are often crowded with boats because Phi Phi is also accessible by day trips from Koh Lanta and Phuket where the majority of the visitors comes from. The landscape of the islands are incredibly diverse and the ocean shines in blue and green when you arrive. Also from Krabi mainland boats arrive largerly to the famous islands of Maya Bay that became world famous by the movie “The Beach” with Leonardo DiCapprio in the lead role. At Maya Bay you can experience the nicest beaches with sparkling sand and turquoise water. Although you should not expect to be alone on the beach and be fascinated by its beauty, it is a must-visitplace if you are in the neighborhood. Other beaches that are visited are Bamboo Island, Monkey Beach and the twin bays on the larger island Phi Phi Don. The “10 stop” as often advertised is actually composed of these 3-4 beaches and a couple of places that are great for snorkeling, usually around Hin Klang and Monkey Bay which today must be seen as a pale imitation of the colorful reefs they once were, even if there still are colorful fish to see. Stay tuned for “Viking Cave” which has some old paintings on the walls inside the cave.

Get around Songthaew Local buses or “songthaew“ runs all day and is a great way for a day trip outside Krabi. There is regular stops but you can jump on and off almost anywhere by hailing from the roadside. The price from Ao Nang to Krabi is about 50 Baht per person and trip. MC / MC sidecar / TUK - TUK Although motorcycle taxis are a popular way to get around in Krabi and its surroundings. Remember to negotiate price before your trip, it depends on how far you want to go. From Ao Nang Beach you will find small minibuses (tuk-tuk) and motorcycle with sidecar (sareng) which takes you to most places in the local vicinity of 20-40 Baht per person. Would you rather rent private boat with driver (not sharing with other passengers) the price is around 2 500 Baht for 4-6 hour charter with up to 6 adults, If you are more than 6 you have to pay more. Prices may vary slightly if compare to Ao Nang, depending on how much closer or farther away from the destination you are. From these destinations you will pay the driver directly (no tickets). Motorbike To explore other destinations further away, there are many private rental options. One cheap way is to rent a motorkbike (about 250 Baht / day + petrol). IMPORTANT! -Keep in mind that the traffic is different and there is a lot of accidents. -Previous experience from motorbike is preferred! -Always wear a helmet! -Dont drink and drive! -Look over your vehicle before rent, record old damages so you dont have to pay for things you not caused! Bicycles are also available to rent for those who defy the sun’s hot rays. Car rental A rented car can be both cheaper and a safer option, especially if you are a few who share the cost. Prices start around 1,200 Baht / day including insurance and unlimited mileage. If you choose one of the major international companies (Budget) you will have to add a few hundred Baht but may instead find better maintained vehicles.
