Make That the Cat Wise Did you ever hear something that seems unbelievable? The person may be trying to fool you, but you’re no fool. They may as well try to fool the cat. The Dutch expression “maak dat de kat wijs” is another of those hilarious and untranslatable expressions. It’s used to tell someone that you don’t believe them at all. So next time someone tells you something incredible, do like the Dutch do and tell them to tell it to the cat.

The circle of birthday guests If you have Dutch friends, you immediately recognize the issue: Dutch birthday parties. Don’t get me wrong, they can be fun. But you have to come prepared.
Don’t expect the entire group to switch to English. It is just very hard to speak in a foreign language with your family. So feel free to break the circle conversation. Just ask the person next to you: “Who are you, what is your relationship with the birthday

While working at Novartis, van Doorn isolated the compounds that made Brussels sprouts bitter, enabling growers to breed varieties that were less bitter and more sweet. Since the 1990s, these new, sweeter sprouts are in demand among chefs and foodies around the world, with no sign of slowing down.

What are the six most important factors when getting a mortgage in the Netherlands? 1. Don’t just think ‘It’s all about the rate’. It is really about finding a trusted partner to help you guide through a complex transaction by offering honest advice and responsive support throughout the entire process. 2. Independent and impartial mortgage advice will save you lots of money. An independent adviser works for you and he could compare more than 35 different mortgage providers with thousands of different mortgages based on low interest rates and the best terms and conditions. Therefore he could help you find the right mortgage which suits your personal and financial situation. As an expat wanting to buy

How to Settle into Brabant! By Olivia van den Broek-Neri
My colleagues have been busy scheduling appointments for internationals who want to make use of Holland Expat Center South’s one-stop shop to arrange their formalities. These are persons who have moved to Brabant for a job, and must now build a new life in the Netherlands. If you are one of these persons, ‘Welcome to Brabant!’ My name is Olivia and I am here to help you settle into the region. How can you do so? Check out my three tips for you: 1. Learn how to Bicycle like the Dutch! Bicycling is a way of life for many Dutch. It is also one of my favorite parts of living in the Netherlands. There are many reasons for this, such as many places are more easily accessible by bike. Riding a bike can save a lot of time and money when you calculate parking fees! It is also an easy way to participate in Dutch culture. But just like driving, bicycling is different in the Netherlands. It is very organized and there are rules. Do you know all of the traffic rules? For instance, who has the right away at roundabouts? Are there things that you cannot do while bicycling? If you would like to learn the bicycle safety and traffic rules, so that you can be more confident while riding amongst the Dutch, then please join us during our bicycle training sessions!

There will be two training sessions to choose from: Saturday 2 October and Saturday 9 October. Both of the sessions will take place from 10:45 until 15:00 and are free to attend. You are welcome
