Your notary understands how good it feels to make a gesture to someone precious. For example with that special gift under the Christmas tree. Perhaps donate to charity or giving part of your wealth or a valuable family heirloom to your loved ones. But which way of giving matches best with your personal situation? We are happy to help you create a good basis to donate. For example through estate planning, so that you can share your assets as desired with your loved ones. And benefit from significant tax exemptions.

“De kogel is door de kerk” The Dutch love proverbs, and you may have come across this phrase from time to time. But has someone literally shot a church? The answer is yes, 450 years ago. The phrase is a reference to a cannonball that was shot into the Sint Bavo Cathedral at the Siege of Haarlem, which can still be seen today. However, the proverb itself did not come into being until 200 years later, when Dutch author Carolus Tuinman wrote about the incident. He points out that an enemy who dares to shoot at a church is undeterred by anything, and fears and respects nothing. This phrase is often translated into English as “a decision has been made” or “the die is cast”, but I think a better translation is another ancient historical reference: “crossing the Rubicon”. When Caesar took his armies across the river in 49 BC, there was no going back. He made a decision that would inevitably lead to war. “De kogel is door de kerk” has that same feeling of a step that cannot be undone, a decision that makes everything that follows inevitable.

Licorice Abuse is Real More than half of adults dislike the taste of licorice, and only 3% of people say that they liked licorice as a child. However, licorice is a beloved treat in the Netherlands and in Nordic countries. In fact, the Dutch consume over 4 pounds of licorice a person per year, and 20% of all candy sold in the Netherlands is licorice. Horrifyingly, this isn’t even the normal licorice that the rest of us know and hate: it’s salty licorice, known locally as “drop”. In ancient times, licorice was known for its medicinal benefits: licorice root has natural compounds that make it sweeter than sugar, is an expectorant and good for coughs, and was used by Alexander the Great to reduce thirst in marching armies. Interestingly, the love of licorice flavor appears to have a genetic component: like cilantro, some people have a natural aversion to the flavor, while aversion to the smell appears to be a learned behavior. And recently scientists have begun to warn that consuming large quantities of licorice can dangerously deplete potassium in the body, affecting the heart and causing a variety of symptoms. So, if you don’t want to join your Dutch friends in indulging in their terrible treat, you have an excuse.

Cycle in the footsteps of Vincent van Gogh Cycling and walking are the nicest ways to discover North Brabant. The Van Gogh cycle route invites you to become inspired by the countryside that was so close to Vincent’s heart. The route is made up of ten loops throughout the province, including one in Eindhoven. Vincent van Gogh was born and grew up in North Brabant. It was here that he found inspiration, first began sketching, and where he developed into a painter. Vincent gave painting lessons to three of his students in Eindhoven from 1883 to 1885, when he lived in the nearby village of Nuenen. He also bought his painting supplies there and had lithographs printed. Van Gogh highlights The Van Gogh cycle route in Eindhoven is 39 kilometers long and takes you past various Van Gogh highlights. These include the Kollen Watermill and the Opwetten Watermill, both of which Vincent painted. You can also cycle along the world-famous Van Gogh-Roosegaarde cycle path, where after dark, thousands of tiny stones light up in the cycle path. It’s like cycling through a painting!

Practical information The Van Gogh cycle route is marked out along the excellent cycle route network in North Brabant. You simply cycle from one junction to the next. At each intersection you choose a new number and continue the route. Signs along the road have arrows and show the numbers of the junctions you need to follow. You will see a Van Gogh cycle route (‘Van Gogh Fietsroute’) sign at every junction Start the cycle route at Eindhoven Central Station and follow the junctions: 96 - 97 - 95 - 94 - 77 - 75 - 99 35 - 81 - 80 - 98 - 08 - 09 - 43 - 42 - 10 - 11 - 12 - 48 - 04 - 03 - 91 - 02 - 96. Tip: download the route map with a detailed description and a GPX file of this cycle route for free on www.visitbrabant.com/vangoghcycleroute.

Where the Wild Ladies Are Book Review by Rebekah Villon

All ghost stories are connected. I mean, every culture builds a ghost mythos that describes their undead in terms of who they are, what they want, and what they are capable of. All ghosts inhabit the in-between realm, moving between their world and ours, and every ghost story is just one glimpse into that larger, connected, continuous world. In Where the Wild Ladies Are, Aoko Matsuda unfolds

The strong Dutch economy is based on a combination of the entrepreneurship of large and small companies. “Of the 1 million companies in the Netherlands, 75% are self-employed, 24% are small companies, only 8,600 medium-sized and 1,500 large companies.” Large companies offer strength, efficiency and connections with international markets. Small companies provide diversity, fill in (regional) niches and provide the leaders of tomorrow. Would you like more information? The Incredible Willem Arondeus Willem Arondeus was a Dutch artist and author who rose to the call during WWII. During the occupation, he started an underground publication supporting the resistance, and became more and more involved in the movement. As an artist, he was able to forge documents, creating identity cards that helped to protect Dutch Jews. However, the existence of the central Amsterdam registry made their forged documents risky, because they could always be checked for authenticity. Members of the resistance formed a bold plan to destroy the Municipal Office for Public Registration, concealing identity records and making it impossible to verify their forged documents. On 27 March 1943, Arondeus and 13 other men attacked the registry office, destroying 800,000 records, stealing blank identity cards, and making off with 50,000 guilders before blowing up the building. A few days later, the group was betrayed, and Arondeus and his co-conspirators were arrested on 1 April. During his arrest and interrogation, Arondeus pled guilty and accepted all blame for the incident, without naming anyone else in the resistance. Of the group that were on trial, he and two other members were openly gay, and he asked a friend to tell the world that “homosexuals are not cowards”. He was executed on 18 June and awarded a posthumous medal in 1945. In the 1980s, he was also recognized by Yad Vashem and awarded the Resistance Memorial Cross.

What does the Netherlands have to do with Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving is one of America’s most popular holidays, and everyone is familiar with the images of the turkey and potatoes, parades and pies, and the focus on family and gratitude. And most people know that Thanksgiving is celebrated because American Pilgrims were poor and starving as their first winter began in the New World, until Native Americans brought them a feast of local foods and helped them learn how to live in their new environment. What does this have to do with the Netherlands? Well, most people don’t know that even though the Pilgrims were English, they settled in the Netherlands many years before sailing from Leiden to America. In fact, early Pilgrim John Robinson is buried in the Pieterskerk in Leiden, and every year there is a special service to honor Thanksgiving and the Pilgrims. This year is the 400th anniversary of the voyage of the Mayflower, and the occasion is also celebrated in the Netherlands.

KOELE WATEREN (COOL WATERS) Four centuries of art with water in the leading role as friend and foe: the Koele Wateren exhibition is an eyecatching selection of no fewer than forty paintings from the Rijksmuseum collection, complemented by works from the Markiezenhof’s own collection in Bergen op Zoom. There is also a link to the future in this exhibition. What will happen if sea levels rise by 6 meters and what will the Netherlands look like in 200 years? The exhibition runs from 10 November 2020 until 7 March 2021. 2. HARRY GRUYAERT RETROSPECTIVE Photographer Harry Gruyaert was born in 1941 in Antwerp and is regarded as the leading European pioneer of color photography. Museum Helmond presents the first retrospective exhibition of his work in the Netherlands. You will see saturated colors, often with striking accents in red, green, or blue. He photographed the hustle and bustle of the street as well as the silence of coastal landscapes. His photos contain wonderful combinations showing the presence or absence of objects and people. These can be seen until 28 February in the Kunsthal in Helmond.

3. GEDACHTESPINSELS (THOUGHTS) | DUTCH DESIGN BY KIKI VAN EIJK Step into the wonderful world of Eindhoven designer Kiki van Eijk. She is well-known for her imaginative designs: from quirky clocks to tapestries and poetic window designs for the French luxury brand Hermès. She presents highlights from her work in a unique way in the renowned TextielMuseum in Tilburg. This exhibition will challenge you to discover her designs in a playful way. The exhibition in the TextielMuseum in Tilburg runs until 12 September 2021. You can combine your visit to the TextielMuseum with Museum De Pont, with its contemporary art and Anish Kapoor’s Sky Mirror at the entrance. 4. VICTOR PAPANEK: THE POLITICS OF DESIGN The Politics of Design exhibition in Design Museum Den Bosch revolves around the visionary designer Victor Papanek (19231998). His famous book ‘Design for the Real World: Human Ecology and Social Change’ (1970) represents a radical vision of design in which sustainability and social justice are more important than consumerism and commerce. The exhibition in Design Museum Den Bosch is a retrospective of his work, combined with the way in which young designers are working on these themes more than ever before. On view until 7 February 2021. 5. ASJEMENOU! AND VINCENT VAN GOGH The Noordbrabants Museum is also located in the Museumkwartier (Museum District) in ’s-Hertogenbosch. The Asjemenou: A History of Dutch Popular Culture in 100 Objects exhibition is based on a regular column in the Dutch newspaper ‘De Volkskrant’. The writers of this column selected 100 unusual but everyday objects, each with its own story, and which together pay tribute to the Netherlands. The exhibition in the Noordbrabants Museum runs until 24 January 2021. 6. NEW MELANCHOLY The New Melancholy exhibition can be seen in the Van Abbemuseum and Home of Design Kazerne in Eindhoven. It’s a collection of accessible works that portray an air of melancholy, in keeping with the current situation of keeping distance and contemplation. Plans were in place for a collaboration between the Kazerne Foundation, Van Abbemuseum and Lidewij Edelkoort, but the outbreak of COVID-19 meant that the exhibition would take on a unique character. On view until 6 December.
