We interviewed Yasmine Smart, a ring mistress, about her experience here as she tours the Netherlands with Circus Herman Renz. “This is my third time in the Netherlands, I am touring for nine months and as we are passing through, I reminiscence back to 1995, the last time that I went on tour here, taking me right back through all the beautiful cities and towns where the people are so kind and welcoming! As a circus performer here, I am really treated like a celebrity!” Yasmine laughs. “I find that the circus industry in the Netherlands is underappreciated. GRAND CAFÉ BERLAGE Coffee with home-made pies, a fresh lunch, a delicious diner, an extensive reading table, drinks with friends, live music, quiz-nights, and dancing in to the wee hours of the night; it’s all possible at Grand Café Berlage! It is conveniently located in the center of the “Quartier Latin” in Eindhoven, de Bergen and has been a favorite among a huge and diverse crowd for over twenty-five years. Berlage has been named one of the best cafes in Brabant more than just once and has a reputation for its excellent restaurant and phenomenal atmosphere. In the spring and summer time the terrace-garden is opened: an oasis of peace and serenity within the busy city, a perfect place to enjoy a

lunch or dinner. Culture has been of high importance since the opening in 1986. Local and national heroes regularly perform at the Berlage and even gifted people can show their talents on the stage! On Friday and Saturday-nights, after 22.30, the café turns into a public stage. Every week, new DJ’s create a club-like atmosphere with hot, new hits and floor fillers from the past. In short: the best café of all the restaurants and the best restaurant of all cafes!

Eindhoven: An Expa t Point of View In order to get an insight of our writers, I interviewed Danai Bouri, who will be writing for us in the near future. Danai left sunny Arta, Greece in exchange for the Netherlands two years ago in 2011 to obtain her Masters degree in Rotterdam. After receiving her Masters degree, Danai accepted an internship at Philips and moved to Eindhoven. She now works as a client analyst at StudyPortals. We held the interview at the Zwarte Doos on the T/U campus on a sunny afternoon on the terrace accompanied by a glass of wine and “een klein biertje.” Why did you choose the Netherlands?

Mei Wah Say Chinese food, and you’ll instantly think of take-out. Walking buffet, Babi Pangang or Nasi. Restaurant Mei Wah does it just a little bit different. This Chinese/Indian kitchen has the basic recipes of a Chinese/Indian kitchen, but with a twist. They have the typical Chinese Peking-Duck, but here’s the twist: it’s served with caviar. Or a delicious Carpaccio, prepared in an untraditional way: on a stone-grill. Feeling hungry yet? This family-owned restaurant has been in the same family for three generations and is currently owned by Taks Yuen. His grandfather and father opened Mei Wah, which means ‘Beautiful Homeland,’ over fifty years ago on the Leenderweg in Eindhoven. What is their secret to success? Quality This is an easy question to answer, says Taks. “Always serving top-quality food, no matter how bad the economy is, this is our top priority. We secure the quality by using fresh products. If the restaurant isn’t as busy as usual, we don’t hesitate, and throw the food away.” Unique Dishes With fifty years of experience, Mei Wah, has made a lot of changes. Mei Wah started off as any other Chinese restaurant in the Netherlands, as a take-out restaurant. That reputation is long gone says Taks. “ It is not, per se, a Chinese restaurant, it is influenced by many different kitchens. We create our own dishes and adjust to the taste of our guests.” 14

you own more restaurants you can’t ensure the quality of all those restaurants. I would rather have one great restaurant, than five good restaurants. My ambitions are more in the goals that I want to achieve, to always maintain and sustain quality. I don’t want a Michelin star; I want a full restaurant every afternoon and night where everyone is satisfied. Everyone wants to grow in life; I want that to, but then with new dishes and by maintaining my commitment to providing quality products in food.”

Passion Taks spends a lot of time and puts a lot of effort in his restaurant for one reason: his guests. “I work a lot, almost 24/7. I try to keep Saturday night free, but sometimes I’ll work four weeks in a row, but I don’t mind. I do it for my guests. My guests leaving satisfied, gives me an adrenaline rush that makes me want to do more and be even better!” “Cooking is really my mothers passion. She is 73 and can still be found working in the kitchen of Mei Wah, not because she has to but because we can’t get her to leave! Now that’s real passion!”

The three most important aspects of the restaurant according to Taks are hospitality, quality of the food, and recognition: “People have to dine here and leave with an experience they’ll never forget. We want people to come here because they heard that it’s a great restaurant, we strive for that!”

Complete Car Care on Location After a long day at work, the last thing you want to do or worry about is cleaning your car. Cleaning your car or letting your car be cleaned is often a very time-consuming task, which doesn’t always fit your schedule. The Autostomerij has a unique solution for this. They clean your car whenever you want, with eco-friendly materials and most importantly: employees of De Autostomerij come to you. Your car can be cleaned at your home, at your office or any other place you want. Eco-friendly Cleaning This company makes your car shiny clean in a short time through unique steam cleaners. The perfect balance of temperature, humidity and pressure makes the steam cleaning a particularly powerful and safe washing method. Through the use of steam we do not only reduce the huge water conservation, but also the use of (chemical) cleaning materials that is superseded by the use of steam. The company uses only 3 liters of water per car, while the average car wash needs approximately 150 liters. De Autostomerij only uses eco-friendly materials and biodegradable substances. The process “Normally a car wash only takes care of the outside of the car, leaving a wax layer behind,” says Henri. “Another difference with a car wash is that we also clean all the small spots where a car wash can’t clean.” The company starts cleaning with steam at a

For years, Eindhoven hoteliers have been giving a warm welcome to international travelers and guests looking to relocate to our culturally diverse city. It is great to see the local Eindhoven community actively getting involved in creating an attractive and welcoming environment! Over the recent years we have experienced a large growth of our international community bringing in international expertise to Eindhoven, which we are of course delighted with. To ensure we are fully delivering the wishes and requirements of the community, we are pleased to see a partnership approach between the municipality and regional-based multinational businesses in order to make our community one of the most expat-friendly destinations within the Netherlands.

8 Must-Know Tips That Every Renter Should Know - Find a Broker. A broker knows all the specifications of the homes it has to offer, meaning that they can match you to a home suitable for you. Not to mention, they have inside information of homes that are available but have not been listed online yet. - Furnished or Semi-Furnished. Don’t want all the hassle of buying furniture if you’re only staying a couple of months? Look for furnished apartments. If you plan to stay longer, then semi-furnished may be right for you! - Short-Stay Apartments. Before getting settled in your new apartment, you may have to stay in a small hotel room. Luckily, a few places in Eindhoven offer short-stay apartments including living rooms, kitchens, and lots of space for an equivalent price of a hotel! - Don’t Ignore the Small Print. Before going on a sighting, check with your broker if the house is for sale and has a “leegstandswet.” If so, you will be evoked once the

What does Intermun dus stand for and what is our g oal? Intermundus was founded for and to some extent by expats. The goal is to create a lasting bond between them and Eindhoven, because Eindhoven is a region with many opportunities as a knowledge economy. There is an abundant presence of workes from outside the region due to the many offices of multinational companies. Intermundus is focussed on making these people feel at home in the city. “We want to keep the knowledge workers here and expand our network. Stefan Schweren, president of Intermundus: “When a region grows smarter, in a large and growing part due to foreign knowledge workers, it is smart to keep them here.” Intermundus also organizes many activities for expats. In summary, Intermundus exists for and through expats. Every 2 weeks the group is convened for sessions, discussions and evenings with a special theme. Every meeting also has an informal part, where the group members have a drink together at the Trafal-
