Best Intermediair Real Estate: where the brain meets the heart Being successful is not just a matter of business. Success is created in a combination of things and one cannot do without the other. So finding a great job in the Eindhoven area, known as the Brainport, is just a first step. But the success would not be complete if you (and your family) wouldn’t feel at home. Both for rentals as for sales our office can help you find this place and advise you about the areas you can choose from, about the nature, the facilities like the shops and (international) schools, and all other things of interest to you. Because no person is the same and your new home and area should fit you! A general description of EINDHOVEN NEWS? That’s what HOWDO magazine asked us to write.
Well, what do we do? We provide daily news, events, and background articles about Eindhoven and its surroundings, in English, on our website www.eindhovennews.com. Most of our articles are also posted on our Facebook and LinkedIn pages. We’re active on Instagram and Twitter, and our news is also broadcast via the public screens at the High Tech Campus and aired on Radio4Brainport. These are our primary channels for ensuring that non-Dutch people too, can stay updated on what’s happening in their neighbourhood. Why do we do this? Being internationals ourselves, we know what it’s like to feel like outsiders. When you are in a new place and don’t speak the language, it is also difficult to stay informed through local Dutch newspapers. To get through daily life and contribute to society, you need to know what
is going on around you – who’s in town, what’s on, new developments, future plans or is there any crime? That is why we offer news in English. Eindhoven News is public and not attached to any organisations or marketing programs, which means we provide an objective viewpoint on the Brainport region. Who are we? Co-founder and manager Irene Martens lived the expat life for twenty years, moving from one place to another around the globe. “We made our own magazines and newsletters to keep our community updated of local happenings and events,” she says of her travels. “Sometimes we used nicknames for national officials because of censorship in the countries where I lived. Luckily, we don’t have to do that here. Moreover, we want to respect all cultures and are not for or against
any culture, nationality, or group. We like to give a voice to people who don’t speak Dutch (yet), so they can tell us who they are. On the other hand, we see that local citizens and organisations also like to reach out to people from abroad who live here in big numbers. We provide this platform, and it’s there for everyone to use. Send us your input!” Eindhoven News has about fifteen active team members who work to keep this valuable website running. This includes daily translation, editing, IT support, PR, marketing, and development. Lately, more and more reporters are joining us to write fresh news and opinion pieces from an international point of view. It’s a lot of work, but with the help of our team - who come from the UK, US, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Singapore, China, Tunisia, Greece, Mexico, Korea, and elsewhere - we continue our mission: connecting new citizens with the in-crowd. Since we began in 2009, many international volunteers have contributed in some way. Most have gone on to find paid jobs or other meaningful activities. Eindhoven News always tells new volunteers: “We’re grateful for your help, so how can Eindhoven News be of value to you?” Examples of this include interviewing companies you’re interested in, or learning a new skill to add to your CV.
Through this goodwill, as well as the support of many local organisations, Eindhoven News has survived for almost ten years. Multiple sources allow Eindhoven News to edit or translate their content for publication on their website, such as corporate or social pages, or their main source, local broadcaster Studio040. Who are our readers? Mainly educated new citizens, aged on average between 30 and 35. But we say: “We’re here for whoever wants to read about Eindhoven in English.” When you consider the fact that there are approximately 18,000 people from abroad in this region, you can imagine the need for information in English. We cover this gap, at least until internationals are fluent enough in Dutch to read local newspapers. Thank you, HOWDO, for giving us this space in your new magazine. And good luck with informing many nonDutch speakers about life in Eindhoven! Eindhoven News: your daily newspaper in English, online. Anything for publication on our website? Cultural differences We had an expat family coming to the Netherlands. The husband had a top position in the company and his wife joined him. Their children remained in the US as they were already studying. We did a house search and found a house in Veldhoven they both liked, with plenty of room for the children when they came to visit. Everything went smoothly. The removal company moved them in, paperwork was completed and the registration done. Now it was time for the partner. She wanted to find a job. After a couple of months I received a call that she had found a possible job and was invited for an interview. She wanted to know what she needed to ask and arrange. We spoke about the employment process here and I gave her some tips and tricks.

The day came when she had her interview. I sent her a mail in the morning to wish her good luck and asked her to let me know how it went. She called me that evening… She’d had her interview and all did go well however she did wonder about one thing. They never told her what she was going to earn and that puzzled her. In the States it’s the first topic of discussion… I explained to her that in the Netherlands we first talk about the position and what the candidate could bring to the job and later, during the second or third interview, the salary is discussed. One difference between cultures… But despite the difference she got the job!

The Hub Eindhoven: The place to be for expats and locals! Expat and local, everyone is welcome at The Hub! In this social club, people from all over the world and with all sorts of backgrounds can meet, make new friends, get to know Eindhoven, learn something new and just have fun. It started out in 2007 as an initiative by Lin Pender, later joined by Joost van Dijck, who wanted to organize events for expats and internationals in Eindhoven to help them develop a social network in the city. They set up the foundation called The Hub Eindhoven for Expats in 2011 and were allocated a permanent location by the municipality in 2012. This is the location at Vestdijk 25, right in the city center, where The Hub remains today. As Lin and Joost were already organizing many activities in local bars and restaurants, it
was only logical to keep up the great work in this new location. So the building was renovated by the volunteers and became suitable for different kinds of activities. Nowadays The Hub still focusses on organizing and hosting many events, classes and workshops weekly for expats/internationals as well as locals. Through these various activities The Hub wants to connect expats to Eindhoven and make them feel welcome. For locals, The Hub is the perfect opportunity
to submerge yourself in different cultures and make friends from all over the world. Every week there are about a dozen regular activities; language classes, music sessions, game and movie nights amongst many other events. In the upcoming two months, for example, there are English Comedy Nights, Syrian Dinner Parties, Open Mic Nights and Pub Crawls. Dates, times, and specific info are communicated via The Hub’s Facebook page. Feel free and welcome to join in on one (or more) of The Hub’s activities.

If you are talking to an Eindhovenaar about cars, chances are he’s going to mention DAF. Van Doorne’s aanhangwagenfabriek (DAF) is THE name in Dutch car industry. Huub van Doorne started a little machine factory in Eindhoven in 1928. He was joined by his brother Wim and in 1932 they started their famous trailer factory which evolved to be DAF. Initially DAF focused on making trailers and undercarriages for lorries and trucks. Right after WWII cars and lorries were very scarce. Van Doorne saw this as an opportunity and the first truck was produced in 1949. The name then changed to van Doorne Automobiel Fabriek. Throughout the 1950’s DAF was also one of the major providers for the Dutch army and the company continued growing. In 1959 DAF produced the world’s first car with the continuously variable transmission, the DAF 600. This car was very popular. More four-seater cars were built and they all used the new variomatic transmission system. Initially these
family cars were a success and many were ordered. DAF continued to make a wide series of passenger cars. In 1975 DAF sold its passenger car division to the Swedish Gian VOLVO to focus entirely on lorries. When the production stopped in 1991 over 1.3 million cars had been sold. Little DAF cars were famous for being able to drive just as fast in reverse as forward. DAF merged with Leyland Trucks and became known on the stock market as Leyland DAF. But in 1993 they went bankrupt and restarted as DAF trucks. In 1996 PACCAR acquired ownership of DAF trucks. But it was still allowed to produce trucks under the DAF-name. Nowadays DAF still has its head quarters and manufacturing plant in Eindhoven. Together with Philips, DAF created a lot of jobs in Eindhoven and contributed to the growth of the city.

a good story Our goal is to train people that have a distance to the job market. In this target group every person has his or her own story, whether they come from a broken family, an unsupportive environment or a war zone. In most cases these people are very willing to fit into our society, however they are not given opportunities to do so.
Stories offers these people a chance to get used to, adapt and learn, without prejudice, and in this way realize their ambitions. Everyone can learn to swim!! A swimming certificate is very important in the Netherlands. That’s because being able to swim is not only fun and healthy, it can save your life! At swimming pools the Tongelreep and the Ottenbad, everyone can learn how to swim. "It doesn't matter how old you are. Or whether you speak Dutch or not. Everyone is entitled to a swimming certificate," says Roland. He is an instructor at both swimming pools. "All our instructors speak Dutch and English. Our lessons aren’t just for children, but for teens and adults as well. We even provide lessons for women only!” More and more people realize the importance of a swimming certificate. "Many adults come here with their children but cannot swim themselves. Once here they realize how important it is to be able to swim and they decide to start taking lessons," Roland tells us. "It is my job to create a bond with them and make them feel safe in the water." Not everyone has the same level of expertise when it comes to swimming but that’s not a problem for Roland. "Our lessons are tailored to the individual. Are you getting better? Then we can step it up a level. Do you have trouble learning? Then we will let you practice a little longer."

How Do you survive the ‘blue envelope’? Needless to say, nobody is fond of doing their yearly tax return, let alone jump for joy once the blue envelope hits the doormat. For some, the Dutch tax authorities slogan; ‘we cannot make it more fun, but we can make it easier’, has the same effect as a red flag has on a bull. However April 1st is coming and so it’s time for the administrative fun and games to begin. I therefore plea to the readers to take a moment, clean your kitchen table and start organizing your pile of loose paperwork. In order to avoid this envelope luring you into a depression, let us offer a helping hand with some tips and tricks.
However, have no fear; the Dutch tax authorities are gradually developing into a serviceorientated organization.
Man with the gavel The Dutch tax authorities impose, collect and monitor taxes. They are also responsible for the payment of benefits and regulate contributions towards the costs of rent, health insurance and raising children. However, have no fear; the Dutch tax authorities are gradually developing into a service-orientated organization. Paper vs Digital To ensure citizens can meet their obligations as easily and efficiently as possible, the paper form is electronically available as of 2010. Filling out the form used to be tedious, but now everything is prefilled. You only have to check and upload it. Submitting the tax return electronically requires a personal code (so-called DigiD or pincode). If you’re filing your first Dutch tax return, you will most probably need to use a paper form, but next year the digital gateway will be available to you as well. In case you are liable to pay taxes in another country as well – for example because you are assigned to the Netherlands based on a net agreement or own property outside the Netherlands – it is advisable to have your personal situation assessed by a tax consultant. Why Blue? Official government correspondence has a palette of sixteen colors. The color blue simply symbolizes the colorful Dutch landscape and pictorial arts. Help!!! Perhaps your employer has hired a tax consultant who will file the 2017 tax return on your behalf, but if
not then do rest assured: there are some tips and tricks that will ease your mind; • Do not start filing your tax return without having at least your (bank, employment) annual statement(s) at hand Deductibles • Some expenses, invoiced during 2013, are tax deductible. For in stance; your main Dutch properties mortgage interest, certain sickness or disability expenses, study or educational expenses, donations or annuity insurance premiums. Keep in mind you have to meet conditions and in some cases a fiscal threshold in order to deduct the expenses you have made. • Have you travelled by public transport? You may be entitled to a tax deduction if you fulfill the conditions. Filing Deadlines • If you received an invitation to file your 2018 tax return then you are obliged to do so by law. • Make sure to file before April 1st. you will be fined in case you fail to do so. You cannot meet the April 1st deadline? Then request
for postponement in time. In principle individuals may be given a 5 months grace period. • The digital gateway to filing your tax return (www.belastingdienst. nl –) is available as of March 1st. Outcome • If you filed before April 1st, then you will receive an assessment prior to July 1st. • If the tax authorities concluded you are entitled to a refund then the money will be transferred before July 1st (as long as tax authorities have your bank account details). • A refund of less than EUR 14 will not be paid by the tax authorities. Have you already received a 2018 preliminary tax assessment? If so, please note that the parameters used by tax authorities do not comply with current law. You will therefore receive a revised version later on. Any questions? Feel free to consult the tax authorities’ experts online www.belastingdienst.nl or contact tax authorities Helpdesk by phone; 0800-0543 No rights may be derived from this publication.

The white gold In the Netherlands asparagus are mainly grown in Limburg, but you can also find numerous growers in Brabant. Generally speaking, asparagus are harvested from the second week of April until June 24th. During that period they are available at farmers and supermarkets. Restaurants often serve special asparagus menus this time of year.
Asparagus can be white, green or purple. The white specimens have grown under the ground, the green and purple need the sun to grow. The white asparagus are the most common in Northwest Europe.
The traditional way of serving asparagus in the Netherlands is with ham, butter and eggs, but there are many modern culinary variations.
Asparagus must be peeled before cooking. It is best to cook them standing upright in a special (high) cooking pan where you leave the heads of the asparagus above water. You can use the peelings of the asparagus to make a delicious and very healthy soup.
Asparagus have rightfully earned nicknames like ‘white gold’ and ‘queen among vegetables’. The asparagus season is relatively short; about two months. So, hurry if you want to taste this flavourful vegetable!

Frans Janssen is Commercial Director at PSV. He is married to Susan Janssen and has two daughters and a son.
The Eindhoven football club PSV has a lot to offer to internationals
We want you to feel at home in Eindhoven ‘We want you to be happy in Eindhoven’
“Eendracht maakt macht”, “United we stand”, is the well-known proverb of PSV. These words can be seen on T-shirts, in the club anthem and on one of the stadium entrances. Although it is a very old saying, it still gains importance. A lot of people work together, but do not really know each other. When you are an expat, a newcomer here, you are not familiar with everyone and can sometimes feel lost. Frans Janssen: ‘I know how im portant it is that you organize things and enjoy time together with other expats in a new and strange country. It is essential that your family is happy. I was an expat for fourteen years. I lived in Stockholm, Budapest, Shanghai and Singapore. I still remember that day as we left the plane together, my wife Susan and our three kids. The youngest was only a few weeks old. There we were, starting a complete new life in
Stockholm, we knew no one. It was a challenge for all of us.’ SPARE TIME Frans: ‘In those days I worked for DLL and had a full agenda, but my family had to find new beginnings, new friends and a complete new way of living. In the weekend we had a lot of spare time together. A lot of activities were around school. That is the ecosystem when you live abroad with a family. I think I
know the questions a lot of people ask themselves in a new country. “Where do I go? What kind of activities would I like to do? Where can I meet new friends?”’ THE ART OF WELCOMING ‘It is important that a city welcomes its new inhabitants and facilitates a social program for expats. PSV has so much to offer and we want to know where we can add our ideas to the existing projects. The companies
of our business partners employ a lot of expats. We really want to know what they want, what they need and how we can help them feel welcome in Eindhoven. This, of course, also counts for expats and internationals not working for one of our partners. We want to add value.’ THE EXPAT CLUB Frans: ‘We are thinking about a special business lounge for expats and a specific part of the stadium for expats, so they can enjoy the football games together but also meet on nonplaying days. What about lear ning Dutch or join culture classes here? The stadium as a living room where you can meet each other, have
a nice cup of coffee and something to eat. We want to offer special tours in the stadium for expats and work together with schools (EIS as well as local schools) and other organizations specialized in expats.’ ‘We are very proud of our stadium and we want to share it with more people than the regular fans and ambassadors. The stadium is used every two weeks for the football games, but it can be used more sustainable by other organizations as well. I am sure PSV can offer internationals space and a place where they can meet each other, sport together and, of course, enjoy some football. ‘You are more than welcome here.’

Are we not drawn onward to new erA
The Laughing Lizard 8
Just like its title, this performance is a palindrome. You can view it from beginning to end and from end to beginning. Because some people believe we are progressing, while others believe just the opposite. Some say the world is coming to an end, others say this is just ‘doomsday’ thinking. Whoever among them is right, one thing is certain – in our continuous stride, we have definitively changed the world in which we live. But, are these changes irreversible, or can we undo them?
Tonight, the cozy Kameleon is The Laughing Lizard comedy café where you can enjoy comedy spoken in English. Each evening you will see different comedians. Who they will be is a complete surprise. Some come from America or England and are here on tour; others are Dutch or just living in the Netherlands. But regardless of where they’re from, their humor and jokes will all be in English. An audience member’s reaction from last season – "Fantastic evening lots of laughter. Will definitely come again!”
