Joost Pool Final Editor With the Mediterranean summer we’re experiencing, chances are you’ll be reading this HOWDO by the pool or whilst enjoying a cool refreshment on a terrace. Cheers! But soon enough, duty calls and it’s back to business. It’s the time of year to find a new school for your children. Tulips Expats Services is there to help you see the forest for the trees. They specialize in cultural differences and are therefore a great source of information to whatever questions may arise in a new country. With your children enrolled in school and your partner off to work, you might have some extra time on your hands. Why not combine a drink at The Hub with acquiring information about voluntary work there? A great way to meet locals and internationals! Or maybe you’ve put your career on hold and want to enter the job market again. Contact Olympia Employment Agency in Veldhoven. They will gladly discuss all the possibilities with you. Mark August 26th in your calendar! The last Sunday of August is traditionally Brabant Day in Heeze, the pearl of Brabant. Besides the historical parade you will be entertained with music, theatre, fun and food. And take the very last chance to view the Wielewaal estate while enjoying lunch or dinner prepared by top chefs. All of this, and much more in this edition. Till September we say HOWDO!

As a coach I help people achieve their goals. It is often the case that for many of these goals you have to do things that are far from comfortable at first. In fact, oftentimes you come up with all sorts of reasons and excuses in conversation with yourself, to especially not do what is necessary. Most people stay away from change and continue with old habits. However, if you are willing to do the work, I can help you get into action and teach you how to directly abandon these habits and patterns. Do you want to know how I can help you? Pop-up Restaurant ”The Wielewaal Invites”
The Wielewaal is the former Philips Estate, a property as big as New York’s Central Park. The gates to these unique and immense grounds have always been closed to the public.
Until last year, when No Xcuse Events & Concept Development talked to the current owner and convinced him to open the gates for a two week period. During this time, No Xcuse opened pop-up restaurant ‘The Wielewaal Invites’ where guests could enjoy a lunch or dinner with a view of the fabulous villa of one of the founders of Philips, Mr. Frits Philips. Because of last year’s enormous success - approximately 5.000 guests found their way to the pop-up restaurant - No Xcuse will organize ‘The Wielewaal Invites’ once more; the final edition!
11
The restaurant will arise in front of the villa from August 30th through September 23rd. Rumour has it that the estate has been sold which means that after the event the gates will forever be closed to the public. Guests are welcomed at the gate by the estate’s butlers and can expect to see a gorgeous landscape with beautiful flora and fauna. After a tour by golf carts, guests are welcomed in the pavilion where they can enjoy a culinary lunch or dinner prepared by well-known respectable restaurants. This is a unique opportunity to view the most expensive estate of the Netherlands and perhaps beyond‌

Buying a house? ABN AMRO is there for you! The well-attended ‘I am not a tourist Expat Fair’ on the VDMA-grounds on June 10th provided the visitors with very useful information about the Netherlands. One of the major Dutch banks, ABN AMRO, was present with a booth and presentation in a separate hall. Whether you’re an expat or a Dutch citizen, ABN AMRO is the bank to go to when applying for a mortgage. It’s their mission create a home away from home. It could be a smart move to buy a house in the Netherlands! Your mortgage payment could be lower than the rent you pay, and you could even save on taxes. But there are a lot of rules and regulations. ABN AMRO International Clients Retail organizes events for internationals throughout the year on the topic ‘Buying a house in The Netherlands.’ Taking out a mortgage is not something one does regularly. Therefore, you depend on experts. ABN AMRO has the in-house expertise to guide you through the process. To make things easier for you, you can make an appointment at one of the offices or discuss the matter via videoconference. Of

Thirty-four-year-old Chris from Australia was quite impressed with the presentation. “I’ve attended three presentations regarding buying a house today. The first was with a broker, the second with a real estate agent and the third with ABN AMRO. I found ABN AMRO’s to be the most informative. I have only been here for two months. But in four months’ time I will surely contact ABN AMRO when applying for a mortgage. I’ll advise other expats to do the same!”

Real Estate Agents Pit Makelaars Finding the right home is quite a challenge. You are suddenly faced with lots of questions. Where do you want to live? Which property would suit you best? An apartment or a detached house? How many rooms do you need? In which area do you want to live? Of course, you will want to know beforehand what is financially possible. "We had already started looking for a home. It was then we realized how many things we had to consider. There's quite a lot involved in buying a new home, especially when it's your first home purchase in the Netherlands. Our buying agent advised us and protected our interests. We've now found our home and it's just what we wanted." Why utilize a Dutch buying agent? • Expertise in the housing market • Insight into the real value of properties • A lower purchase price than you would realize • A buying agent is able to translate for you • Essential information about the property regarding ownership and land registry– this is important as it is possible to buy a property without then having the right to live in it • Representation of your interests as a buyer and help negotiating • Save time by having everything handled professionally • Professional completion of the deal

Let’s do a quick DUTCH / BRABANTS LANgUAgE COURSE The city of Eindhoven is located in the beautiful province of Noord-Brabant. The inhabitants of Brabant are also known as Brabanders. These Brabanders have their own dialect and we want you to get acquainted with it. The creativity in the dialect of the Brabanders sometimes even seems like a foreign language. Here you can find some of these words.
Since it is useful for internationals to make themselves understood among the Dutch people we also have some Dutch words and sentences. As the summer period approaches again, we sum up some words and phrases that might come in handy this summer.

t Parelbosch: top quality childcare! ‘t Parelbosch is a childcare centre run by the passionate brothers Bas and Roel de Waal. They have years of experience and a focus on quality. You can see that in their childcare centre. Nutrition ‘t Parelbosch has a special nutritional policy. Bas: “After several conversations with parents and nutritionists, we opted for a balanced hot meal at noon, where there is a lot of attention for allergies or special requests related to religion. A healthy diet is important and children in the West often get too much sugar, saturated fats and salts. We think it's our responsibility to give the children healthy food. We plan the meals in advance every week and post them so that parents can react to it if necessary. At the same time, they know exactly what kind of meal their child will receive. "
Flexible childcare ‘t Parelbosch has several options for regular and flexible childcare. It works with day parts and hourly care. Changing days, buying extra days / hours or adjusting the agreements, everything is possible. Roel: “We also offer assistance with completing paperwork and requests for, for example, allowances or tax refunds. This is free of charge.” ‘t Parelbosch is personal and accessible and is used to receiving parents and children who are not yet familiar with Dutch culture.
Gymnastics Also in terms of movement, 't Parelbosch is progressive: the children get toddler / children's gymnastics. Bas: "Children aged 2-4/5 years are participating in this, for which we hire an external sports teacher. This way they get acquainted with movement in a fun way before they can go to a sports club." Cultural projects ‘t Parelbosch regularly organizes cultural activities for children, such as art-, music- and theatre projects.

Selecting a school in a foreign country It is that time of year again. The summer holidays have just begun, and this is often the moment when families with children move countries. Kids are off from school and it is a natural time to transfer children from one school to the next. Selecting a new school is usually the most important first decision someone with kids will make. You will need to select the type of school. Does your child need extra help due to a change in language? Will you be selecting a local or an international school? What are the school fees? What is the reputation of the school and does it have a good atmosphere? Another point to be considered is: what are your long-term plans? Are you going to return home, or will you stay
in the Netherlands for a longer time? All very important questions which need to be answered before the move can take place, especially when you are moving with kids. As relocation consultants we can advise you about the difference between local and international education and inform you about the schools in the area. Local experts are available to conduct an in-depth test to ensure that your child will go to the right type of school and at the right level. The international schools and some local schools can provide guidance in this respect.

Olympia moved! Since June 2nd Olympia has moved to De Run 4312 in Veldhoven. Yes, for sure we will stay in Veldhoven! We outgrew our old office and looked for a larger location. It had to be an environment that would provide a relaxed, warm and professional atmosphere. A place where one feels comfortable to work, that inspires for new ideas and where everyone should feel welcome. In a nutshell, an environment that corresponds with Olympia’s slogan: “Olympia gives work a meaning”. Olympia’s area of operation covers the Kempen, Veldhoven and Flight Forum. It is thus a great help to work from a central point to be close to the customers. A new location, a new logo, 5 years of entrepeneurship, it all works out perfectly.

Philips: From Lightbulb to Multinational One can say that Philips is the best known name in Eindhoven. The multinational company which sells technology all over the world, has its roots here in Eindhoven. In 1891 Frederik Philips and his son Gerard started a little lightbulb factory in the center of Eindhoven. This factory can still be found and is made into a museum! Because of Philips Eindhoven’s nickname is the city of light.
The company had a rough start and almost faced bankruptcy in 1895. Everything changed for the better when they brought in Anton Philips. Anton was the younger brother of Gerard and was only 16 years old when he started. Although he had an engineering degree he soon proved to have innovational ideas for the company. Philips thrived and expanded with the arrival of Anton. Many lightbulb factories were built and from 1920 Philips started producing other things as well like razors and vacuum tubes. Philips also made an affordable radio which was a worldwide hit. Due to the growth of Philips the population of Eindhoven grew as well. Because of this the decision was made to annex the surrounding municipalities although they were much larger then Eindhoven. Even to this day you can see a clear Philips presence in Eindhoven. Philips continued to grow and made many products. They were the first to produce a boombox and the cassette tape, both were immensely popular. Philips was also the first to launch the compact disc. Which was used by billions of people. All of this from the company based in Eindhoven.
On this day Philips has its headquarters in Amsterdam. The old one can still be seen in the center of the city. Philips sells products all over the world and has offices in 100 countries.

Frits Philips Perhaps the most famous of the Philips family. Frits Philips was born in 1905 in Eindhoven being the son of Anton. Frits became a member of the board of Philips in 1935 and he was appointed vice-director. When the Netherlands were invaded the board of direction of Philips fled to the US only Frits remained to run the company. Together with his family in the US they managed to keep the company going in WW2. He was locked up in concentration camp Vught from 30 May until 20 September. This was because there was a strike at the Philips factory which delayed productions. Frits managed to save 382 Jews by making the Germans belief they were indispensable for the war effort. He was later named among the righteous among the nations by Yad Vashem for his actions. Frits was immensely popular in Eindhoven and people often called him meneer Frits or Mister Frits. He was involved in many organizations and was a huge fan of PSV. He attended matches even at the age of 100
and didn’t use his business lounge but sat in the crowd. After his death PSV announced that his seat ( section D, row 22, seat 43) is to remain empty at all games as a sign of respect. At his 100th birthday there was a big celebration and Eindhoven was officially named Frits Philips City for that day. He died on December 5th 2005. Prior to his funeral thousands of people came to watch the casket on its way to the burial ground. Mr Frits was 100 years old when he died.

Brabant Day Heeze: the biggest theatre parade of the year On Sunday August 26th Heeze will come to life with the 61st annual Brabant Day. An improved and even more amicable festival is programmed around this theatre parade. Entertainment guaranteed for tens of thousands of visitors! they will enjoy, for the second year running, a children’s parade with budding builders, designers and actors, to kick-off the opening party.
Photography: Victor Coffa
This will happen under the new proposition ‘The biggest theatre parade of the year.’ At the same time, the vibe of one massive openair theatre and Brabantian checkered red and white are freshened up. From Ravenstein to Roosendaal The last weekend of August has been the domain of the parade of towering floats putting on a theatre production for the past sixty years. Brabant Day Heeze attracted 35.000 visitors in its jubilee edition of 2017. This year, the theme is ‘From Ravenstein to Roosendaal’. Therefore, the groups will be inspired by towns and cities located in North-
Brabant. The theatre parade was and always will be the highlight of a day full of events. Surrounding the parade, which starts at 13.30, is a festival starting at 10.00 and ending at 19.00. Visitors are entertained on five thematic ambience-squares along the route with music, theatre, entertainment, fun and food. Among other artists, famous bands Flairck and VOF de Kunst will perform. An experience for locals and visitors The weekend before the parade is the opening party for the locals. Of course, ‘outsiders’ are very welcome too! On Saturday August 18th,
Ambassadors Well-known Brabantians promote Brabant Day Heeze. The group of ambassadors will increase over the coming years, but already includes the King’s Commissioner Wim van de Donk, author Wim Daniëls and former cultural envoys and musicians Björn van der Doelen and Gerard van Maasakkers. Thousands of volunteers are involved in Brabant Day, nearly a third of the Heeze community. As the festival grows, more and more ‘non-Heezenaren’ also offer their professional but voluntary services. Together, they set up a highly praised experience which is rooted in history, tradition and the community. In a visitors’ questionnaire conducted last year, the event scored a 9.1. With the ever-improving festival, the organisation wants to match that incredible grade, grow beyond southeast Brabant, and expand to 40.000 visitors in 2022.

The rule in Zurich vs the exception in Eindhoven Vincent Merk v.merk@tue.nl
My story this time starts in downtown Zurich, Switzerland, at 3 am. A group of local and international students were walking outside a discotheque after closing time. They were on their way home and needed to cross a major street. The traffic light was on red for pedestrians. But it was 3 am, remember? No traffic at that time of night, so all the international students readily crossed the street after a last quick check no car was coming. The locals automatically stayed on the sidewalk as a group, waiting for the light to turn green. Meanwhile the internationals yelled at the Swiss to also cross and not just stupidly wait because there are no cars anyway! But they didn’t, and stoically waited for the green light.
This anecdote is an illustration of the cultural dimension ‘the rule vs the exception’. When I tell this story in various intercultural settings involving students or (young) professionals, most people will have a good laugh and agree it was rather stupid to wait while no cars were coming. But, as we know, there are two faces to each coin. Many people, although usually respecting (traffic) rules, will spontaneously try their luck at 3 am and cross the street, making an exception to that very rule. But come on, of course there are no cars, so why worry? Clear case. You can argue they adapted to circumstances but indeed broke general rules. It’s often seen as a positive attitude of flexibility, improvisation and creativity. In contrast, for those respecting the rules in whatever circumstances, there’s another rationale. By never making exceptions to the rules they’ve created and hence respect, the Swiss have a comfortable life with a clear conscience. Of course, you need to trust the system that in turn protects you. However, they’re also often seen as too rigid and lacking that sense of improvisation and creativity those rules breakers often have.
35
Let’s all admit those traffic lights are a tricky thing. Germany often uses a double red light for pedestrians, in case one was not enough or visible. In India a red light for cars means: first look if there’s no policeman around, second check for cars, and third just go. And what about the Dutch? As we all know, cyclists are terrible at respecting any rules, drivers and pedestrians usually behave better in traffic. This is generally the case in Eindhoven. Anyway, whatever the circumstances, there is no right or wrong here, this example just illustrates the fact that reality has multiple interpretations. This simple axiom forms the basis for cultural awareness and intercultural competence. Both are needed to interpret diversity’s true value. Anyone a story to share?

Food All countries have some form of traditional or well-known food. For the French that could be the “baguette” or the “croissant”, for Germans it could be the “wurst” or the “brezel”. But what Dutch food is there? What food can you eat in the Netherlands? When you arrive in the Netherlands, and walk out of the airport or train station, this could be one of the first things you see. A cafeteria or friettent, sells various deep-fried snacks, such as the traditional frikandel, a sausage made of minced meat. While not the most appealing in looks, it can be had as a “speciaal”, with onions, curry and chip sauce. Another delicacy of the chip shop is bitterballen. These are the mini versions of a kroket, a deep fried, bread crumbed ball containing meat
or fish. These are often had as a sharing snack at a restaurant. And of course, you can also get chips at the shop, with one special dish being “friet kapsalon”, chips covered with shoarma meat and cheese. Should you be out, you can also get this food from local, in the wall dispensers, where you put in a euro or two, and a door opens to your snack. There are also several sweet snacks to try as well. One of the more
famous ones is the stroopwafel, a thin waffle biscuit connected by caramel. These are often made fresh on a market stall, or you can buy packets of them in the supermarket. Vlaai can also be bought in supermarkets. Vlaai is a speciality of the province Limburg, with it being a Dutch tart that has various fillings, like fruits and custard, and is often topped with crumble or pastry. If you want something sweet for breakfast, look no further than hagelslag. These are chocolate sprinkles that go on bread, and come in a range of flavours and shapes, like white chocolate or flakes. One thing that might be strange to non-Dutch people is the amount of bread that is eaten. Typically, for breakfast it is bread with a selection of toppings, or “broodbeleg”. These could be cheese, ham, hagelslag, chocolate spread, anything like that. For lunch, they also tend to have bread, in a sandwich called a botterham.

Swimming Swimming is a big priority in the Netherlands, because there is so much water all around. But what certificates can you get, and what do you do? The swimming certificates in the Netherlands are the A, B and C ones, which are created by the Nationale Raad Zwemveiligheid (National Swimming Safety Association). With these diplomas, you start off with A, and can then progress onto B and C, with 1, 2 and 3 coming afterwards, but these are optional. In swimming pools, if you don’t have the A diploma then you have to wear armbands in the pool.
it is important to get the diplomas as they then know what to do in water, and they could sometimes be left out of activities if they don’t have them. Swimming lessons for the diplomas are held at the Tongelreep and the Ottenbad, both in Eindhoven, as well as the ZIB Swimming Centre in Best, and an equivalent diploma at the Den Ekkerman in Veldhoven. Megan Howells
For these diplomas, they are worked for by having swimming lessons preparing the child for it. It takes about 48 hours of swimming lessons to get the A diploma, and only 12 for B and C, but the former are harder and building off of what was learnt in A. In the A diploma, the child is taught how to do some basic swimming, with strokes of backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle, and pool safety, such as swimming laps with clothes on. They learn what to do in case they fall into water, and how to swim properly. To get their diplomas, they have to do an “afmelden”. This is a combination of a showcase and a test, to show their families what they can do, and to also prove that they can do the things necessary for the diploma. Many Dutch children bring a lot of their family, like their grandparents, and when they have got their diploma it is a celebration, with cake and presents. In the Netherlands,

The Netherlands: v

When you first arrive in the Netherlands, you might have a few ideas of what the Netherlands is like. But what is the truth and what is made up?
Fact: The Dutch bike everywhere This is one of the truer clichĂŠs that there are about the Dutch: they do bike to most places. Parents often bike with one child on the front, one on the back. Children start to bike at a very young age, and they do a biking test in the last year of primary school. There are masses of bikes on bike racks by most train stations. But while in other countries cycling is considered a sport, in the Netherlands it is merely a mode of transport
Myth: Most people wear clogs
Myth: Windmills are everywhere Windmills were very important in Dutch history. They were first used in around the 1400s, and from then continued to grow. Windmills were mainly used to grind corn and pump water out from countryside. This was important to the Dutch as the country is under sea level, so a lot of the areas flooded easily. However, nowadays as modern technology is used to pump water or to grind grin, they are not needed as much as they were. Go to an area like Kinderdijk, and you will see many old mills, but they are not seen every day in modern cities.
Clogs were definitely worn in the past by the Dutch. The oldest clog was found in Amsterdam and was made in the 13th century. Clogs were worn by farmers and fishermen to protect their feet from sharp objects, and to keep them dry. While you can still buy clogs in shops, they are mostly bought by tourists, as the people who used to wear them to work don’t wear them anymore. Tourists can now buy clog slippers, clog magnets, and even clog bottle openers.
