I don’t know about the rest of you, but to be honest the winter is my least favourite season. Then again, it is also called the festive season. And not to worry, just before Christmas, on December 21st, the days grow longer again and the new year is just around the corner. Marielle OwenDuffels of Tulip Expat Services has some tips on where to go for Christmas festivities, whether it be close to home or just across the border in Germany. Not forgetting the beautiful city of Maastricht. As you know: Shared sorrow is half sorrow. Many other expats will also be missing their friends and family back home. There are always plenty of activities going on at the HUB so check out their website and see what appeals to you. A great chance to meet people from all over the world, even some Eindhovenaren! Because after all, whether it’ll be for a few months or years, you’re living in Eindhoven. So get out there! Go to the bars. Go to the library, they have a vast collection of English books, provide language classes and maybe after a while you can take out a Dutch book. Try out some of the lunch hotspots as portrayed in this edition. Once again, especially in these dark months: GET OUT THERE! The low temperatures and lack of daylight may not be too alluring, but by the end of the day you will feel a whole lot better if you have socialized instead of strictly confining yourself to the office and your home. Let’s run into each other at the HUB, a pub or anywhere else. Have a little chat, ending with ‘HOWDO, till the next time!’ and enjoy your winter!

Honest and freshly prepared chicken

31 dec 2018 DE GROTE OUD & NIEUW TIJDMACHINE "De Grote Oud & Nieuw Tijdmachine" makes sure that everyone is in for one gruesomely awesome celebration during the first party of 2019. Travel back and forth from the 00's to the 70's. Looking back is allowed, dreaming about the future is a must, but standing still is impossible. In the main hall the time machine is led by Superstijl, going back in time. But of course you are the one who controls the time machine. You can do that by simply voting for a decade and a music style. Every fifteen minutes a new round starts with fresh styles. Will it be 80's Hiphop? 50's Rock 'n Roll? Or 90's House? You're in control! In the small hall Vinyl Feestje are the masters of the wheels of steel. Browse the 7-inch vinyls looking for gems of Michael Jackson, Donna Summer, The Kinks, Beach Boys, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Cindy Lauper and so much more. Choose. Give. Swing! More info: www.effenaar.nl

Whether you want a seat for lunch or a delicious dinner, or you’re just popping in for a simple takeaway meal, everything’s possible at KIP 040! Owner Nathalie serves the freshest, tastiest chicken dishes in her new restaurant. Made with the best ingredients and completely affordable, everything from the chargrilled chicken to the mayonnaise with herbs is homemade. The animals have had a good life and all the meat has been prepared halal, so everyone can enjoy these dishes! KIP 040 offers a pleasant ambience: light and industrial, but warm and cosy too. Buying or sales agent? If you use the services of your own broker to buy your new home then this is a buying agent. If you have your home sold by a broker then this is a sales agent. Of course Real Estate Agent Anita Fiers can act as a buying agent on one occasion and as a sales agent at another, but she can never act as both the buying and sales agent for the same property. The NVM Code of Practice does not allow this in order to prevent conflicts of interest. Anita always looks after the interests of her client. Once you have decided to hire Anita as your buying agent, you can start the buying process.

TIP: list your financial possibilities Before you go hunting for property, go and see a registered mortgage adviser so you know what you want to/can borrow.

Step 1. Find a suitable property Step 2. Attend viewings Step 3. Carry out further investigations Step 4. Negotiate Step 5. Sign the sale agreement Step 6. Finance your property Step 7. Go to the notary

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. We are happy to assist you!

We will help you find a property that suits you. We will advise you to have a look in the villages or towns and districts and neighbourhoods that interest you. This will help you gain insight into the facilities you can find in your new living environment and which of these you think are important.

Home away from home I never imagined I would make a transition from Berlin—where I have lived the last six years of my bittersweet adulthood—to starting a new life in Eindhoven, in my late 20s. This essentially meant my adulthood taking on a new meaning, thanks to my new-found status as a married woman; being in the unenviable position of being “between jobs”; and starting my life from scratch, in general.

15

In Berlin, life was meant to be spent outside–every waking or inebriate moment of it; no matter how cold the attitude of the people or how much the thermometer dipped! It also meant coming to terms with the fact that: 1. Coffee didn’t taste the way it did at home (South-Indian filter coffee is to live for); 2. Veganism isn’t just about spending an exorbitant sum of money on foods with colorful labels, and most importantly; 3. Embracing the people, the language, the culture, and the way of life in the new place. Speaking of embracing life as an expat, I have been in the Netherlands both as a tourist and, now, a resident. Often rated as one of the happiest countries, I quickly realized that there’s more to the country than what readily meets a tourist’s eye. And I have come to discern the difference between the two rather quickly. As warm and friendly as the place and people here tend to be, I have come to realize that knowing Dutch (even if the Dutch insist on speaking English) could impact life and relationships here profoundly. Especially, if one’s to call it home here. Calling a new place home as an expat means being emotionally resilient. It means having the spirit to start anew, and embarking on an adventure every day. We humans tend to make a home out of the place we happen to inhabit, and attach a sense of belonging to it. In the endless search for home as an expat, Eindhoven was a serendipitous surprise. It was entirely easy to develop this sentiment towards Eindhoven. Every time I travel out of Eindhoven,

When Whimsy Strikes I’m Vaish, and I’m a biologist. I like to write about people, places and cafes that serve some of the best coffee in town (I do not judge people who drink tea). I fancy listening to Iron and Wine on commutes, spending hours in perfumeries, painfully obsessing over symmetries and catching all the trailers in the cinema. If you need recommendations for the best horror flicks or require company to do coffee-tasting on a lazy Saturday afternoon, I’m your guy! If you want to contact the writer or comment on this article, you can reach me at writeratthehub@ gmail.com.

I achingly long for that delightfully welcoming cup of cappuccino at my favorite deli in the Centrum, or for a blissful bite of Tompouce at Café B. I fondly reminisce about the days spent at Boek van Pierre, shopping for the next alluring read; the endlessly long board game nights with friends on weekends; and the spontaneous bike trips to neighboring towns. Maybe it is the fact that despite being a city, it has the casual, friendly air of a small town that has attracted one too many expats– even though it speaks a different language than mine, one where the residents insist on biking even in weathers that are only meant to be savored indoors with a searing hot cup of mocha, and despite the fact that it is drained of people by 7pm on weekdays. For all that I have to come to learn and experience as an expat here, I will forever carry Eindhoven: it’s beautiful parks, the lovely acquaintances I’ve made here, the innumerable bites of Tompouce, the enticing GLOW nights, and everything good it has had to offer me, indelibly in my heart. For that’s what it means to call a place home away from home. As the prolific author and travel writer, Pico Iyer puts it, “home lies in the things you carry with you everywhere and not the ones that tie you down.” Vestdijk 25 | Eindhoven T 040 845 1475 www.thehubeindhoven.nl

festive period We are approaching the end of year. This can be a difficult time of year for everyone but especially for expats. The days grow shorter and the nights longer. The festive period is just around the corner and you are in another country with different habits and customs.

Here in the Netherlands there is Sinterklaas on the 5th December, which is very much focussed on younger children. From the Indian community there is Dwali, festival of Lights, this year on the 7th November. For the European and American communities it is Christmas, 25th December. We have just had Thanksgiving from the American communities. For everyone it can be a special time of year, but if you are away from your (extended) family, which expats usually are, this can also be a difficult time. But you are not alone in this, here in Eindhoven there is an extensive international community with many internationals all in the same boat. There are many things to do and see around Eindhoven, and the wider region. Christmas markets, with their festive atmosphere, is one great option, for example in Dordrecht or Maastricht. Also, being so close to Germany, visiting Christmas Markets in nearby towns such as Aachen or even Cologne can be a magical festive experience. Sharing and experiencing the habits of different cultures with the new friends you have made in a new location can be very rewarding and educational. This gives insight and understanding in all things that are different from what you know yourself to be ‘’normal’’. I hope that everyone can enjoy the festive period in their own way. Either in a new location with new friends, or taking the opportunity to go back home to see family and friends.

Eindhoven’s

Within the ring road of Eindhoven, a stone's throw from the center, lies the beautiful nature reserve Genneper Parks where culture, sport and recreation are united. In the middle of this beautiful area a cozy pavilion with eighteen minigolf courses, playground and terrace is hidden: The Pavilion Genneper Parks. Still unknown to many people in the region and even to some Eindhovenaren, but also very much loved by an ever-growing group because this bustling establishment is a real attraction for cyclists, hikers, terrace visitors and tourists during the summer.

best kept secret

In the pavilion you can enjoy drinks, lunch or dinner. One hundred and twenty seats are available both inand outside, while the atmospheric con servatory can accommodate another forty guests. The terrace is surrounded by the beautiful gardens and the green of the Genneper Park. Open for six days a week during the winter! During the cozy winter months, the Pavilion is open from Tuesday to

Sunday. In the evening you can still play minigolf on the lit courses. Along with a new winter menu, the interior has undergone a small metamorphosis, creating cozy cor ners with intimate seating areas. On the menu itself are delicious meat specialties such as tournedos, ribeye and spare ribs, but also fresh fish (grilled tuna) and vegetarian dishes. A lot of honest, traditional and self-prepared dishes; even the fries are sliced and pre-fried in our own

kitchen. The range of specialty beers (from bottles or barrels) has risen to more than sixty varieties and the wine list has been improved as well. Weekly fun themes or activities are organized such as tastings, weeks with big or small game meat and a winter market. On Christmas Day and Boxing Day we’ll organize a Christmas brunch at noon for the whole family and starting at six o’clock we will serve a luxurious four-course sharing dinner.

19

Weekly fun themes or activities are organized such as tastings, weeks with big or small game meat and a winter market For both brunch and family dinner there are still a limited number of seats open to reservation. Party location par excellence The pavilion is also the place to be for parties, corporate drinks and weddings. Unique in its kind, sufficient (free) parking, friendly staff, snacks from our own kitchen and no additional costs are just some 'unique selling points'.

The High Tech Campus, which is within walking distance, provides a lot of clientele of course, but also schools, hospitals, government institutions and other companies are among the regular visitors. A birthday or family reunion in a smaller circle can also be celebrated very well here. The space can be tailored to groups ranging from 50 to 500 people. There is also a covered party location available in the garden, with its own

bar, two outdoor kitchens, deck chairs and lounge seats. For more information about parties, activities or reservations, please contact us!

5 Best Places for Lunch in Eindhoven by Rebekah Villon @rvillon Some may say otherwise, but lunch is the most important meal of the day. During the week, it’s critical to get away from your desk, relax, clear your head, and then return to work with a renewed energy and focus. On the weekend, lunch helps you recover from a late night out, or gives you strength to face a long evening ahead. Breakfast is overrated. Lunch is where it’s at. And here are some of the best lunches in Eindhoven. ZwartWit Koffie: Casual lunches, incredible coffee ZwartWit is a relaxed, comfortable cafe in Victoria park. It has a spacious, slightly industrial interior, and plenty of seating on the terrace. They specialize (as the name

implies) in exceptionally-crafted coffee and espresso drinks, but their selection of pastries, sandwiches, and snacks will easily satisfy any appetite. You can also scale up your lunch by adding a fresh salad or increasing the portion size if you are hungry. The cakes are home made,

27

the tea is brewed to perfection, and the staff are warm and welcoming. It’s a great spot for a casual lunch. Giornale: Their iconic sharing menu is just as good at lunchtime Giornale in Stationsplein is an institution for cocktails, and often has long waits for dinner. But it is also a fantastic option for lunch, and it’s quieter during the day. Lunch plates are just as delicious and satisfying as their dinner options, but at a lower price and with no waiting. Of course, the steaks, pastas, and fish dishes are exceptional, but everyone loves the Giornale take on tapas, where you can order small portions to share of several dishes. It’s a great way to have a fun, light lunch in an incredible atmosphere. Usine: An Eindhoven lunchtime institution There’s a reason that Usine in the Philips Light Tower is an Eindhoven lunch time favorite. The spacious, industrial décor, central location, spacious terrace, and delicious menu bring people back again and again. It is also a kid-friendly environment, if your lunch includes small people. They are best known for their meat dishes, including the pork belly, but also have delicious vegetarian options. Usine is a popular coffee, lunch, cocktail, and meetup spot, and never a bad choice.

Velosoof: A thoroughly Dutch lunch in a bike cafe For the Dutch, cycling is more than just a means of transportation: it’s a way of life. And nobody knows that better than Velosoof, a cycling cafe in the Gasfabriek. It’s full of cycling images and memorabilia, and they offer on-site bike sales, parts, and repairs, along with sandwiches, salads, soups, burgers, and uitsmijters (fried eggs served on buttered bread) for any appetite. For bike commuters, the ability to have lunch while repairing your bike can be incredibly convenient. It has great atmosphere, friendly staff, and is a fun place to grab lunch or a drink. They are closed on Mondays, though. Meneer de Boer: Comfort food to soothe your soul So, breakfast may be overrated, but not when you can have it all day long. At Meneer de Boer, you can have breakfast whenever your body needs it, in a gorgeous traditional cafe on the Keizersgracht. Meneer de Boer is much-beloved, for good reason. Their home made food nurtures your body and soul, and has even been known to provide miraculous recovery from a hangover. While they do brisk brunch and lunch business on the weekends, it’s also a fantastic spot to visit during the week and snuggle up to comfort food.

Qian Zhang) We meet Qian at De Restauratie and take a seat at a small table with a clear view on the entrance hall of the station where we see all the people passing by. Qian:” I have chosen this place because of the quote on the wall by Piet Mondriaan. He is one of my favorite painters and I think what he is mentioning there, is exactly what life is about.” “For me this quote expresses the spirit of Eindhoven city where many companies and students are creating new things and make the change. Maybe this is exactly the reason why they put the quote there.” 'Conventie, een soort herinnering, is het grootste beletsel om te genieten van leven en kunst.’ ‘Convention, and the way you are used to live your life, is preventing you from the joy of life and art.’ “I always search for new opportu nities and want to learn and stretch myself. I put all my energy in what I want and I never stop achieving!” “I have realized I was only working and focusing on ‘problems’ instead of being proud of what I already have achieved. This is the way we use to look at life in my culture. The Dutch culture helps me with my work – life balance. I have more

free time now and decided to take painting classes. Painting really has broadened my horizon.” “Here I feel more open and dare to make more jokes. But I hope I will not lose the capacity to bear and the strength to survive. Because life here is so much easier than I have experienced in China.” “People are like fishes, they are always running because of the big sharks behind them.” Room with a view “I live in ‘De Groene Toren’ at the 8th floor. I love my home, it is a room with a view at the city center. “I am used to live in high buildings. For me it feels a bit strange and not secure

to live in a too quiet neighborhood.” “I am originally from Mianyang, China, close to Chengdu. Perhaps you know Chengdu, they have the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.” “Why I have chosen Eindhoven? That is quite a story.” Lose yourself Some years ago, a group of 13 stu dents of TU/e visited my university for a summer program. We became friends and had a great time. When one of them asked me to come to the Netherlands for study and see more of the world, this idea stayed with me and became a dream, a goal I wanted to achieve.” “So, after

“Never stop achieving” my exams I applied for the Master Industrial Engineering in Groningen and a complete new world opened up.” “In Chengdu, I used to be one of the best students, and in Groningen I really had a hard time in the beginning. Everything was so different, the lectures, the style students communicate with the teachers and of course everything was in English. I was studying every day, also during the weekends. I even thought of going back to China. But at the end of the year I got used to the new flavor of life and finally let go off my worries and stress.” “I remember myself cycling in the snow, listening to Eminem’s song Lose yourself. The sentence that gave me a lot of power and confidence was: ‘The world is mine for the taking. Make me King’.” I wanted to be one of them “Because I wanted to see more of Europe, I booked flights from

Eindhoven airport, because this was the cheapest. There I saw all the young people in the busses and on the streets, I wanted to be one of them.” “After graduation of the Master I applied for a job at my favorite company and got it! I am so happy with my work at ASML. Everybody is specialized and responsible for one particular part and together we can make big things happen.” “I feel excited when I can solve complex questions.” Happy moments “My mum came to visit me some months ago. When we sat in the train, I saw her absorbing everything. She looked so young and beautiful. She told me that the Dutch landscape was reminding her of her youth, when the cities in China were not so packed with people and there was more nature around.” “When I showed her my office she said: “Qian this company

suits you. The people are like you. I am so happy for you that you made this choice.” “In my culture it is not common that you express and share emotions, so this was a precious moment for us.” “I think Dutch people are sometimes a bit crazy. They always look happy. Even if they are cycling in the rain or standing in a bus with too many people, they keep on smiling and singing.” “I love to do things on my own, but sometimes I go out with my friend to the HUB and sing karaoke or have parties at my friend’s house. I love rap music and do some rapping myself. Actually, that was the way I learned English.” “Fijne avond”, Qian says, and off she goes to a new exciting goal. Learning the Dutch language!”

Why Chaitali volunteers for

In this hectic life of ours, it’s indeed a great feeling to know that you have some free time on your hand; it is awesome to realize that we have the opportunity of using that free time by being involved in some fulfilling voluntary job. I believe this is what prompted me to be a volunteer writer and translator for Eindhoven News. Other than of course my passion for writing, which I have tried to follow despite the hectic responsibilities in my professional life in Finance. I am mainly involved in translating local news from Dutch to English besides being involved in its organisational core team and writing occasional feature articles that have impact on the expats. As you know, Eindhoven News strives to bring the local news in and around Eindhoven to its international residents. Bringing the local news in English to the expat community is one of the effective ways to make them feel included and connected to the natives. It is a growing platform and the site is maintained and updated by a group of international volunteers from Eindhoven.

I believe there is a lot to do for the booming international presence in Eindhoven through Eindhoven News. For one, it gives me a sense of involvement with this group. It’s a great feeling to know that you are working with a team of dedicated individuals who share the same passion for writing, as well as striving to make a difference in the lives of people and the community we live in. It is a great platform where the majority of the news items are written and translated by talented volunteers who write copies that are relatable across cultures and who give their best to uphold quality. The editorial team is experienced and efficient, its a pleasure working with them, the editors and the Manager are very encouraging and stimulate the members to come up with their best. The Feature section comes up regularly with in-depth articles on Healthcare, Education and Kids. It is truly an interesting

online media site for the Expat community, informing them not only about local news, but also interesting events, meetups, important happenings in and around the city in English. Volunteering for Eindhoven News also enables me to meet various people, to know closely what is happening in my city and of course get to know many people upclose. To those who are interested in journalism or writing, it provides opportunities to pursue an interest in journalism. At the end of the day, it leaves me with a feeling of happiness to realise that I have been able to contribute a little towards something positive, something constructive.
