Joost Pool Final Editor After our well-received ‘rebirth’ in April, thanks for all the compliments(!), it is with great pride, pleasure and energy that we’ve put together our new edition for you! You, the expat and international (student) that makes it all worthwhile. Thanks once again! Fortunately, our international community is ever-growing and that doesn’t go unnoticed with the local businesses, foundations and municipality. With the ever sunny (sic) Dutch summer approaching fast, we’ve included many outdoor activities for you in this issue. For example, take a last chance of a tour of the grand Wielewaal estate, formerly belonging to Philips. After this summer the gates will be permanently closed to the public. Literally on the menu: lunch and dinner by top chefs from the region in a pop-up restaurant. All this organized by NoXcuse. For an active summer you might be interested to try out touch rugby or FlingGolf. Both very easy to learn, not as rough or difficult as the real rugby and golf, and a great way to meet both internationals and locals! As usual we’ve also included various tips and tricks on how to make your life here a little more comfortable. How about the ‘dreaded’ Dutch birthday parties? We’ve all got to sit through them and now you know how. We hope you’ll enjoy this issue even more than the last, so until the next time: HOWDO!

Force Coaching As a coach I help people achieve their goals. It is often the case that for many of these goals you have to do things that are far from comfortable at first. In fact, oftentimes you come up with all sorts of reasons and excuses in conversation with yourself, to especially not do what is necessary. Most people stay away from change and continue with old habits. However, if you are willing to do the work, I can help you get into action and teach you how to directly abandon these habits and patterns. Do you want to know how I can help you? Imagine yourself in Japan, or Yemen, or… let’s say Pakistan. You arrive by plane, walk into the arrivals hall, and you see all kinds of notice boards, advertisements, signs, and you hear people talking. You don’t understand a thing! Of course, some information is available in English, and some people speak English. So the bigger things like getting to your apartment or ordering a burger are easy enough. A burger looks the same everywhere! And then: you’re going to work in this country, so you get a call from your new boss who will make sure you get picked up and taken to work on your first day. So far so good. By now, you can get to work every day. Some colleagues help you fix up your apartment, tell you where to shop and how to get your paperwork sorted.

Next: you want to meet other people, do something at the weekend, join a sports club and to get to know the city. You want to feel connected and to enjoy yourself. Besides that, you want to know what’s going on in town. You watch the news, but they talk too fast to make sense… you see newspapers on the rack in the shop, but you can’t read them - though from the pictures it seems there is some kind of demonstration. Lots of people on the street. Masses. Why? Is it a celebration? Who is celebrating what? Is it a pro test? Against what? Should I be protesting too? Is it about something that affects me? Did something bad happen? Is it a trade union strike? What do they want? Higher wages, probably. Or is there a football match? You really don’t know, but apparently it is of interest to many people. This is just one example of information that could be important to a resident. You won’t find it in a directory

‘Connecting international to local’

or a guide, but still it can be crucial to your (and your family’s) life in the country. It is essential citizens are informed about day to day events in the city they live in. Things change all the time - new rules, new regulations, new developments, new events…. Things happen. This is NEWS. It is information that is important to everyone in town so they can take part in local activities, talk to neighbours about the latest happenings, know what to say yes or no to. We at Eindhoven News are determined to keep (we do this since 2009) providing this news and making sure non-Dutch speakers too are kept updated.

Dutch people are not always aware of the considerable local population that can’t participate because of the language barrier. If you’ve never experienced building a life in a foreign country, it doesn’t cross your mind. You can read and understand everything! You KNOW everything. Your annual holiday abroad doesn’t do much, to help you understand how it feels to want to be included, and the extra effort you have to make to get the information you need. This is, of course, part of the adventure of living abroad - and how boring it would be if EVERYTHING was in English! But to have the essential information, what you need to stay involved… yes, that’s nice.

Finding a house As you can imagine, with the many different cultures arriving in the Eindhoven area, there also are many different needs that need to be met. Some are looking for new houses, others are looking for older houses. Because everyone has a different point of reference, it can sometimes be difficult to meet these demands. Some people like to have a large oven in the kitchen, so they can cook that turkey at Thanksgiving. Others are looking for every bedroom to have a bathroom. Yet again other people rather have an apartment with a small kitchen, as they prefer to eat out. Others are looking for a large house in the centre of town on a low budget.

Herring: Dutch Sushi It’s not a big secret that Dutch people love fish. But one fish has a special place in our hearts: herring. For more than 600 years, people in the Netherlands have been eating raw herring. What’s up with that? At the end of June, the beginning of the new herringseason is celebrated. Herring is caught from mid-May to mid-July and is called ‘Hollandse Nieuwe’ (Holland’s Newest). At the start of the season the fish is at its best: fresh and fat. After the season ends, you can still eat delicious herring, as it’s frozen to keep its high quality for a long period of time. The Dutchies like herring so much because it has a soft texture with a nice bite to it. The smell is amazing: salty and fresh. The fish must have a high percentage of fat, at least 15%, which is said to cure hangovers. Where do you find this treat? On any street market you will find a ‘viskraam’ (fish stall). Here they sell all kinds of fish, but of course herring is the most popular one.

You can consume the herring in different ways. Most of the time the fish is being chopped up and covered in onions. If you really want to enjoy the full experience, try eating it the traditional way. You hold the herring by its tail and let it slide into your mouth. That’s the only right way to discover this ‘Dutch sushi.’

buying a house... If you have worked and lived in the Netherlands for six months or longer, you may be eligible to buy a house! However, you are suddenly faced with lots of questions. Using a real estate agent is very common in the Netherlands, and is advisable, particularly for those who are new to the country or are not fluent in Dutch. Dutch estate agents are called makelaar. It's common to have both a buyer’s agent and a seller's agent, and each will have different roles in the transaction and have to be paid separately. Over the years we have gained a lot of experience in dealing with the desires and needs of expats. We’ve seen our share of houses. We are aware of the differences you encounter once you set foot in a different country. We go far beyond what other agents offer. Our only goal is to make sure you are happy with your purchase. As a buying agent, Anita is an expert, a specialist in the housing market. She protects your interests as a buyer. She saves you time, problems and thousands of euros, thanks to her expertise, experience and knowledge of the market. We will help you find a property that suits you. TIP: Before you go hunting for property, go and see a registered mortgage adviser so you know what you want to/can borrow. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. Where to live in the Eindhoven region? When looking for a house in Eindhoven or the surrounding villages there is a lot of choice in terms of housing types, space, green areas, facilities and connections. Central Eindhoven has some old neighbourhoods, but mostly newly built (pricey) apartments. There are many facilities, a shopping mall, ter races and international restaurants. Eindhoven North has a wide range of houses for every budget. There is a market on Saturday at the Woenselse Markt. The Karpen donkse Plas is a nice place to relax with a lake, park and lots of greenery. Winkelcentrum Woensel is the second centre of the city with a wide array of shops. Eindhoven South is very diverse mix of cheap, middle and expensive neighbourhoods. It offers sport facilities and a green area from the centre towards the High Tech Campus.

Meerhoven is a recently developed residential area that provides high quality and comfort. There is a shopping mall and a good express bus connection with the centre. This is a popular area for expats because of the short distance to the International School.

Oirschot, with a historic village centre and houses dating back to the 17th century. Or Waalre, with its greens, old and new neighbourhoods, villas and conveniently located just south of the High Tech Campus and ASML. We at Stoit Groep are happy to help you find your perfect home!

“A home away from home!” Around Eindhoven there are several villages with lots of greenery, serenity and space. Nuenen, famous for Van Gogh, with good bus connections to the International School. Eersel, with a lovely centre and bus connections to the International School in Mol.

Country Estate De Wielewaal The storyline of De Wielewaal property began when Anton Philips, who founded the Philips company, bought a large piece of woodland. He had it developed into a country estate, complete with a beautiful conifer garden (1912). In 1920 he donated part of his estate to the local community for the development of a park, i.e. the Philips de Jongh stroller park. In the 1930s he also had the Philips fruit farm built. Anton himself never lived on the estate. For his part, his son Frits, chairman of the Philips company board between 1961 and 1971, had a magnificent country house built in 1934, and lived there for some 70 years except during the World War Two years, when German officers confiscated De Wielewaal. After Frits died, the current owner, an international businessman, directly contacted the Philips family. He took over the estate. Its redevelopment, which lasted 18 months completely transformed De Wielewaal, whilst maintaining its distinguishing features. For the first time since 1912, the estate is now truly available for sale – at last a unique opportunity to acquire this very special country estate.

MAIN FEATURES Year of construction: 1934, renovated in 2007 Surface area: approx. 142 hectares Main residence Size: 7,650 m³ Gross floor area: 2,582 m² A total of around 40 rooms, 7 of which are bedrooms/suites with 8 bathrooms.

Pop-up Restaurant “The Wielewaal Invites”

The Wielewaal is the former Philips Estate, a property as big as New York’s Central Park. The gates to these unique and immense grounds have always been closed to the public.

Until last year, when No Xcuse Events & Concept Development talked to the current owner and convinced him to open the gates for a two week period. During this time, No Xcuse opened pop-up restaurant ‘The Wielewaal Invites’ where guests could enjoy a lunch or dinner with a view of the fabulous villa of one of the founders of Philips, Mr. Frits Philips. Because of last year’s enormous success - approximately 5.000 guests found their way to the pop-up restaurant - No Xcuse will organize ‘The Wielewaal Invites’ once more; the final edition!

25

The restaurant will arise in front of the villa from August 30th through September 23rd. Rumour has it that the estate has been sold which means that after the event the gates will forever be closed to the public. Guests are welcomed at the gate by the estate’s butlers and can expect to see a gorgeous landscape with beautiful flora and fauna. After a tour by golf carts, guests are welcomed in the pavilion where they can enjoy a culinary lunch or dinner prepared by well-known respectable restaurants. This is a unique opportunity to view the most expensive estate of the Netherlands and perhaps beyond‌

Let’s do a quick Dutch / Brabants language course The city of Eindhoven is located in the beautiful province of Noord-Brabant. The inhabitants of Brabant are also known as Brabanders. These Brabanders have their own dialect and we want you to get acquainted with it. The creativity in the dialect of the Brabanders sometimes even seems like a foreign language. Here you can find some of these words.

Since it is useful for internationals to make themselves understood among the Dutch people we also have some Dutch words and sentences. As the summer period approaches again, we sum up some words and phrases that might come in handy this summer.

English Bread A book A chocolate bar Hotchpot A watch An onion Bye

Brabants – Mik – Buukske – Kwatta – Petozzi – Lozzie – Juin – Houdoe

Dutch – Brood – Een boek – Een chocoladereep – Stamppot – Een horloge – Een ui – Doei

English Dutch Hello, how are you doing? My name is … Hallo, hoe gaat het? Mijn naam is … I work for … Ik werk bij ... Can I have the bill please? Mag ik de rekening alstublieft? The weather forecast Het weerbericht The weather is beautiful today Het is mooi weer vandaag Today I am going to the beach Ik ga vandaag naar het strand Tanning Bruin worden Swimming Zwemmen Sunglasses Zonnebril Beach umbrella Parasol Sunscreen Zonnebrand I am going on a vacation to … Ik ga op vakantie naar Sadly, I am not going on a vacation Ik ga niet op vakantie helaas I am going on vacation by… Airplane Ik ga met (het) vliegtuig op vakantie Train (de) Trein Car (de) Auto Bicycle (de) Fiets Bus (de) Bus Tram (de) Tram

‘Real Job Check' by Olympia Veldhoven paints a realistic picture ! Candidates on the labour market now have a broad range of companies to choose from. Employment agency Olympia from Veldhoven helps these companies with a smart approach in recruitment and selection. Olympia's national research shows that 72 percent of people who leave an organization within one year do so because that particular corporate culture does not appeal to them. Recruitment and selection procedures have traditionally been very focused on diplomas and experience. Little attention is paid to the match between an individual employee and the corporate culture. This is precisely why Olympia pays extra attention to this within its recruitment and selection process. Real job check According to Olympia, the reason for a mismatch often has to do with switching too fast, a lack of attention in the preliminary phase and insufficient knowledge of the corporate culture of organizations. The employment agency from Veldhoven has devised something to tackle this: a potential candidate for a job is curious about what the culture is really like within a company.

Olympia arranges a meeting with an employee of the company concerned. An employee tells best about his or her experience. These conversations are called a ‘real job check’. In other words, what is the general practice or culture? During the interview, the candidate gets a look behind the scenes and talks with the employee about career opportunities within the offered position. What is striking is that employees often talk positively about their workplace when there is personal attention for them. Company parties and other fringe benefits are becoming increasingly important for candidates. Added value of the company The employees of Olympia address the needs of its customers by visiting them. Identifying the customer's question is a priority, at the same time the temporary employment agency wants to make an inventory of where the real added value of a company lies for a candidate. Branch manager Mieke Bax: "Talent and people are currently in control of the labour market. That's why you have to offer something that really moves the candidate.” For more information please phone (040) 2554868 or email to veldhoven@olympia.nl.

a good story Our goal is to train people that have a distance to the job market. In this target group every person has his or her own story, whether they come from a broken family, an unsupportive environment or a war zone. In most cases these people are very willing to fit into our society, however they are not given opportunities to do so.

31

Stories offers these people a chance to get used to, adapt and learn, without prejudice, and in this way realize their ambitions. We offer customised edu cational programs to give them the theoretical and practical knowledge required, supplemented with ap prenticeship positions with our business partners. In the end a paid job becomes a realistic possibility.

Chapter 3 Strijp-S is a former Philips district which has trans formed into a cultural hotspot by entrepreneurs and creative minds. Stories is located on the ground floor of the former Philips factory ‘Apparatenfabriek’ (Devices Factory). The design is both industrial and botanical. Stories is open for breakfast and lunch every working day.

Chapter 2 We tell stories, especially about what we offer. What do we eat exactly? Who created the dishes? Where do they come from? Stories tells you what you are eating and drinking. Our street food menus offer you a trip through culinary stories and experiences from all over the world. That’s what makes Stories memorable. Will you pass on the stories?

Events Stories is perfect for your get-togethers, receptions and parties. We can host a maximum of 300 persons. Just contact Stories and we will tell you all about us and the possibilities for your event! Open on workdays 08:00 – 17:00. Stories is also available for events outside normal opening hours.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN EXPATING: THE DUTCH CIRCLE PARTY

35

Every country has its own way of celebrating birthdays. Some countries don’t even celebrate them at all. The Dutch take their birthdays serious. Don’t think they will let it quietly pass by, they’ve got special birthday calendars hanging in the toilet to help them remember your birthday. In the Netherlands, people will throw their own birthday parties. When you’re invited, you don’t have to bring food or drinks. The jarige job or jet (the birthday boy or girl) must buy all the foods and drinks. The only thing you bring is a present. The gift shouldn’t be too expensive, around ten euros is perfect. If you don’t know what to give, a birthday card with money is always appreciated. When you arrive at the party, you congratulate the one who’s having his or her birthday. You do that by saying ‘gefeliciteerd met je verjaardag’ (congratulations with your birthday) and giving either three kisses on the cheek or by shaking hands. You only kiss when you know someone really well and men don’t kiss men. Now comes the really strange part. You have to congratulate everybody in the room when you enter. You do this by saying gefeliciteerd met Mike (congratulations with Mike), again followed by kisses or handshakes. Don’t forget to mention your name when you don’t know someone. Now it’s time for another party tradition: The Dutch Circle Party. Every chair in the house makes its way to the living room. Together they form a big circle, so everybody can speak to everybody. In reality, most of the time you’re only talking to the person sitting next to you. Once you’ve found your place in the circle, it’s time for coffee and cake. Most of the time there will be multiple types of cake to choose from. The vlaai (a pie with usually a fruit topping) is the most popular kind. But traditional Dutch apple pie is also very popular. After coffee and cake, it’s time for alcohol. The circle remains, but at least it becomes more bearable. It’s also time for food. On the tables in the middle of the circle will be cheese, leverworst (liver sausage) and crisps. Don’t expect to have dinner at the party, unless it’s specifically stated that there will be food. The Dutch Circle Party usually ends at around six pm. When you go to work on your birthday, it’s your responsibility to bring a cake. Don’t forget this because your co-workers know it’s your birthday and will be disappointed if you don’t bring cake. If you want to bring something else, like a muffin, instead of pie then it’s alright to do so.

f o y r o t s i H n e v o h d n i E Eindhoven became a city when duke Hendrik I of Brabant gave it its city rights in 1232. Eindhoven was then still called Endehoven. It was located between two small rivers: the Dommel and the Gender and formed a small, concentrated population. This is where Eindhoven’s ‘growth’ began.

During this attack, which is known as the ‘sinterklaasbombardement’, 148 civilians died

37

During the Dutch revolt (Eighty Year’s War) Eindhoven changed sides between the Spanish and the Dutch several times. But in 1583 it was captured by the Spaniards one last time and burned to the ground. The industrial revolution of the 19th century provided a population boost for Eindhoven. Canals, roads and railroads were constructed. Philips started his lightbulb factory in Eindhoven in 1891. Eindhoven thrived under the lighting business as can still be seen today. Around the beginning of the 20th century Eindhoven was growing rapidly. In 1935 the city had over 103.000 inhabitants. Due to the population growth, the five neigh bouring municipalities Woen sel, Tongelre, Stratum, Gestel en Blaar them and Strijp were added to the city limits. Another big event was the opening of the Van Doorens Automobiel Fabriek, better known as DAF, which still exists today. The opening of the factory brought the car industry to Eindhoven.

During WWII Eindhoven, like the rest of the Netherlands was occu pied by the Germans. The RAF bombed the Philips plants in Eindhoven on December 6th, 1942. During this attack, which is known as the ‘sinterklaasbombardement’, 148 civilians died. Eindhoven was liberated during operation Market Garden. During this operation the historical city centre of Eind hoven was bombed repeatedly and destroyed completely. The libe ration of Eindhoven took place on

September 18th, 1944. The historic city centre has never been rebuilt. During the 1970’s, 80’s, and 90’s Eindhoven saw large scale housing development. This made Eindhoven the fifth largest city of the Netherlands which it still is today. Nowadays Eindhoven is known as the city of light. With its industries and university, it is a great city for expats and foreign students to live in! Discover what Eindhoven has to offer.

Meet Kei Blacks: International Touch Rugby Team from Eindhoven For the past two years, Eindhoven has had its very own touch rugby team. Last month, the team played its first official match during the Touch 'n Tulips Tournament in Amsterdam. The 'Kei Blacks' (a reference to the official Eindhoven merchandise) made it into the top five. We met up with team founder Colin to talk about a sport that is becoming increasingly popular in the Netherlands.

39

What the heck is touch rugby, you might think. So did Colin two years ago. He played regular rugby for years in his home country Ireland but had to stop because of an injury. When he moved to Eindhoven he was looking for a new team sport. After meeting a Frenchman, who used to be part of the French national touch rugby team, he became enthusiastic. Together with another Frenchman, they decided to set up a new team in Eindhoven, consisting of both Dutch people and internationals. Limited-contact sport Touch rugby is a limited-contact sport, where tackling is replaced with touching the opponent making it a less aggressive kind of rugby. Each team consists of three men and three women. The sport originates from countries where

rugby was already popular. During the off season, teams picked up touch rugby to stay in shape, but without the risk of getting injured. Meanwhile, the sport is gaining popularity. In countries like Belgium, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands, touch rugby is booming. Eindhoven has had a touch rugby team since 2016, consisting of thirty men and women in total. After several friendly matches, Touch Eindhoven ‘Kei Blacks’ played its first official tournament a couple of weeks ago. Eindhoven ended fifth out of sixteen in a tough pool with Team Berlin and Team Hurricanes from Paris, last year’s finalists, and Team Kituro Brussels, one of Belgium’s top teams. Eindhoven branded rugby kits "We were the talk of the town", says Colin. “Not only because

of the excellent result, but also because of our outfits.” The ‘Kei Blacks’ appeared in cool, Eindhoven branded black shirts. The next step is to find their own place, where they can train and organize competitions: "A place we can call our home". Colin is looking for partners to get this project of the ground. New team members - men, and especially women - are welcome too. For Colin, touch rugby is more than just a sport, it’s a way of bringing people together. He emphasizes that the team is very accessible and open to enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds. Every Wednesday evening, the team trains in Eindhoven. Club Salvador

Xarah von den Vielenregen & El Tigre Blanco Tonight, take your place at the Tigre Blanco nightclub, where a true spectacle will be played out – Club Salvador. This is the last time that the Philipszaal will be transformed into Het Tijgersnest. El Tigre Blanco, guitarist and singer of Tigre Blanco, together with international burlesque starlet Xarah von den Vielenregen are going to create an atmosphere that you will not soon forget. Inspired by the decadent side shows of the last century, this duo will treat you to a bizarre mix of burlesque, cabaret, danger shows and comedy. Colorful, surrealistic and artistic. Señor Dalí would be proud! There is no assigned seating at this performance.

Het Tijgersnest Tigre Blanco

Tigre Blanco is back with the finale of Het Tijgersnest! With a keen eye to their plans for Radio Blanco, you will hear new songs and surprising guest artists in this famous nightclub setting. A theatrical setting of light, video and decor that create a smoky nightclub feeling somewhere along the Mexican border. Sizzling summer heat, hard drinking, and the smell of hot sweat. A place where you sell your soul to the devil. Tigre Blanco makes compelling rock music in which Americana, flamenco, film music, gypsy and soul form a dark alliance. Music that sounds like the soundtrack of a new 'paella-western' by director Quentin Tarantino. There is no assigned seating at this performance.

modern dance, and set it to the expressive music by composers Ólafur Arnalds and Bryce Dessner. "Flashy, pure, and with a broad sweep of melancholy", wrote the Theaterkrant in a five-star review. The songs You and I and The way young lovers do by Jeff Buckley form the basis for the latest choreography by Marco Goecke's Woke up Blind. The two female and five male dancers are pulled into an acoustic world in which they excel in their battle with Buckley's vocal power and his hectic guitar sounds. The evening is made complete with a world premiere piece by associate choreographer Crystal Pite, who never fails to explore the power of the physical in her dramatic work.

What are the ten most important factors when getting a mortgage in the Netherlands? As an expat wanting to buy a house in the Netherlands there are a few advantages over renting a property. Getting the right mortgage is not an easy task. An independent adviser can help you out.

1. 2.

3.

4. 5. 6. 7.

Don’t just think ‘It’s all about the rate’. It is really about finding a trusted partner to help you guide through a complex transaction by offering honest advice and responsive support throughout the entire process. Independent and impartial mortgage advice will save you lots of money. An independent adviser works for you and he could compare more than 35 different mortgage providers with thousands of different mortgages based on low interest rates and the best terms and conditions. Therefor he could help you find the right mortgage which suits your personal and financial situation. Different mortgage providers use different terms and conditions. Don’t just look at the interest rates, but also take into account the type of mortgage, the fixed interest period, the possibilities of a penalty-free repayment, quotation validity and renewal fees, the pledge deed if necessary and the so called take-out option when moving to another home. What costs are involved in buying a house and getting a mortgage in the Netherlands? Let your adviser arrange an increased mortgage registration. Mostly this is free of charge and it could save you future legal and notary costs in case you would want to increase the loan with the same lender for home improvement. Choose the best notary. As a buyer you have the right to choose your own notary and of course it is wise not to choose the most expensive one. Let your adviser help you choose the notary with the best service for a reasonable price. Let your adviser explain you all about the Dutch tax reduction. Which costs are deductible and does it affect the 30%-ruling for expats in any way?

8. 9. 10.

Is a life insurance policy compulsory and if not, is it wise to take out a life insurance policy? Do you want your partner to be able to meet the monthly payments and stay in the house after you have passed away? What happens in case of partial or full incapacity for work or in case of unemployment? Are you still able to meet the monthly payments? All deeds and contracts should be examined carefully. Most documents are in Dutch and since Dutch is probably not your native language, your adviser could explain and check all required documents.

Bonus I: Make sure your new house is insured from the day of the transferal. Besides the home insurance, your adviser can help you with a contents insurance, liability insurance, car insurance, travel insurance, legal insurance and even your health insurance. Bonus II: If you are not married, it could be smart to obtain a so called cohabitation agreement. Let your financial adviser explain all legal and fiscal consequences. A financial planner (FFP) is a highly educated financial adviser and could help you out on all legal and fiscal subjects mentioned above. www.mortgage040.nl
