Blok 59 Vitality: Healthy and Vital shopping mall instead of a low budget club. In recent years the part of low budget clubs in the fitness branch has increased greatly. Their most important selling point is their low pricing. In this manner members pretty much buy access to fitness machines for a little money. But members should not expect anything more, out of economical choices coaching has been mostly minimised or even eliminated. As a response to these developments new initiatives have risen. Bart

Doughnuts: Dutch Cuisine’s Gift to the World Did you know that the modern doughnut is a descendant of the oliekoek? In the 1800s, American Washington Irving referred to “dough-nuts or olykoeks,” which were only to be found on the tables of New York's “genuine Dutch families.” The first modern recipe was published in 1803, in a cookbook of American recipes. In 1847, American Hanson Gregory claims to have invented the distinctive ring shape as a way to prevent the center of the cakes from being raw and doughy, and making them cook consistently throughout. In the 1900s, the alternative spelling “donut” was adopted as an attempt to make the word easier to pronounce, and has since spread throughout the world by franchise Dunkin' Donuts. Americans celebrate National Doughnut Day on the first Friday of June, but they owe it all to the cuisine of the Netherlands.
Did You Know: Martin Van Buren was Dutch? In case the name didn’t give it away, Martin Van Buren, the eight president of the United States, was the first US president who was neither British, nor of British ancestry. His parents were Dutch, and his birth name was Maarten. His father, Abraham Van Buren, was the son of a Dutch immigrant from Buurmalsen, and his mother was also of Dutch descent. Van Buren was born in 1782 in Kinderhook (Kinderhoek), New York, a city founded by Dutch colonists, and where Dutch was still the primary language. Young Maarten learned Dutch as his first language, only learning English later at school. He married his childhood sweetheart, Hannah Hoes, who also spoke Dutch as her primary language. Martin Van Buren was a founder of the Democratic party, the first US president born after the Declaration of Independence, and an anti-slavery leader, and he remains the only president to this day who spoke English as a second language.

International Creative Women When we leave our country, family, and loved ones behind to move to the other side of the world, it can sometimes take a minute to feel at home. Last year, when I moved to the Netherlands from India, I faced the same predicament. Lucky for me, I found International Creative Women! They welcomed me with open arms, and the support I have gotten from them is overwhelming. French agents knew that he had a reputation as a playboy and womanizer, and hoped that Mata Hari could get valuable information, even if she had to seduce him. In reality, Wilhelm's role as a general was greatly overstated, as the Germans sought to improve his reputation at home and abroad, and he actually had a very small role in military decision-making. French agents offered Mata Hari one million francs in return for German military intelligence, an amount she would never have refused. Dutch friends The Dutch are always curious to hear how internationals experience the Netherlands. And, as they tend to view themselves as a peculiar species, they will nod in happy agreement every time you mention something that surprises you here. Yes, we all own more than one bike. Our language does sound funny. You are right – we say what we think, but no, that doesn’t mean we are rude.
that as a Dutch person, I need to offer some help. My conclusion after some not-so-scientific research is that having a go-between could do the trick. The Dutch can be somewhat aloof, and you need a reason to make a connection. So, get a dog! A puppy attracts crowds, trust me. People will suddenly greet you and start a conversation. The ‘dog people’ in my neighborhood all know each other (by their dogs’ names, but still). A child will do as well – you can easily meet other

Centering pregnancy, a unique way of prenatal care During the pregnancy a midwife checks on the wellbeing of mother and child. She does so by taking an extensive medical history of the future parents. She checks the weight and blood pressure of the mother and the growth of the baby. She orders several blood tests and ultrasounds are made. Besides all the medical checks, the midwife provides all the information you need to prepare yourself for birth and parenthood. She does so involving both future parents and possible siblings.

All this can be done during individual checks. However, at Midwifery Practice Eindhoven there is also the possibility to participate in Centering Pregnancy. The Centering model is a combination of medical checks, exchanging knowledge and experience and strengthening your network. During every appointment with the midwife you will have 2 hours to have your medical check, to ask all your questions and to discuss your concerns. You will do this together with a group of women whose due dates are close to yours. You will learn from your midwife and from each other. You have the opportunity to share stories, talk about topics that are important to you and to discuss all you are going through physically and emotionally. In the meantime, you are building a community of women to support each other until long after your baby is born. Centering Pregnancy has been proven effective. You will receive 17 hours more time in prenatal care than with the individual appointments. Much more time to answer your questions which will contribute to more self-confidence, confidence in your pregnancy, the delivery and in your role as a parent. Women who followed the Centering Pregnancy program are in less need of medical pain relief during birth, artificial labor hormones are used less and fewer referrals to a gynaecologist are necessary. Furthermore, women indicate that they experienced more support, felt more involved in their care and were better prepared for the future. Therefore, the motto of Centering Pregnancy is: “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. Midwifery Practice Eindhoven is the only midwifery practice in Eindhoven that offers Centering Pregnancy in English. All international clients are welcome to participate, even if your medical checks need to be done by a gynaecologist. www.midwiferypractice-eindhoven.nl
The Netherlands is a Dog’s Best Friend The Netherlands just might be the best country in the world to be a dog. Nearly 20% of Dutch families have a pet dog, and it’s the first country to be officially without any stray dogs. Every year, about 5,000 dogs show up in the pet shelters in the Netherlands. These dogs are usually given to the shelter because their owner is in poor health and cannot care for them any more. Dutch dog shelters are among the best in the world, with excellent heating,
medicine,
staff,
and
sufficient
resources to care for the dogs. In fact, Dutch shelters often import stray dogs from other countries in Europe to help them find forever homes in the Netherlands. The Dutch take pet care seriously. The first animal protection agency in the country was established in 1864, and animal abuse was made criminal in 1962. Abusing or mistreating an animal can be punished by a prison sentence of up to three years, or a fine of up to â‚Ź16,750. The Dutch view animal abuse as a social problem, and protect dogs like they would any other citizen, and even has an animal welfare political party. If you want to adopt a dog in the Netherlands, expect some scrutiny. The shelter will want to make sure that you have the ability to care for a dog emotionally as well as financially. If you are a dog in the Netherlands, woof woof scritch scritch good dog.

ISE: More than a school The International School Eindhoven (ISE) is situated in the world’s most dynamic innovation hub for design, science and technology, in the Brainport region of Eindhoven in the southern part of the Netherlands. For international families, who work and live in different places around the world, it is so much more than just a school. On our beautiful (green) campus we provide, as an IB World School, excellent primary and secondary education, parent workshops, language lessons and so much more!

Did You Know: You Can Cycle Through the Trees in Belgium? Just 36 km from Eindhoven is a unique destination for cyclers. In June of 2019, in Belgium's Pijnven Nature Reserve, an innovative cycle path was opened that allows you to travel in the treetops. Over the 700 meters of this incredible bike path, you ascend up to 10 meters in the sky, experiencing nature in a totally unique way. The Pijnven woods are a forest of coniferous trees planted for the now-defunct mining industry, which are now being managed for preservation and diversity with native species. The path, which is also open to pedestrians, is part of a large natural cycling network developed by Visit Limburg in Belgium. Cycling Through the Trees has free parking for visitors, and bike rentals are available.
