How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Do Something Instead by Rebekah Villon

Volunteerism is a deeply ingrained aspect of Dutch culture, reflecting the sense of social and community responsibility that is so important in the Netherlands. In fact, according to a 2018 study, over half of Dutch people between the ages of 15-24 do volunteer work, and consider it part of their social well-being.

• There are hundreds of different activities and volunteer opportunities, so there are ways to participate no matter what your age, interest, or ability level. • Volunteering is a great way to meet people who share your interests and build friendships • Volunteering helps to boost your self-esteem, develop new skills, and maybe even boost a resume

If you pay attention to the news, it can seem like

Benefits of Volunteering For expats, volunteering is not just a great way to adapt to local culture and do what the Dutch do. Volunteering also provides some special benefits for internationals and immigrants. For example:

everyone around you. Volunteering helps to remind you of the many ways that we are connected, and lets you see and experience local life in the Netherlands in a whole new way. If you are concerned about climate change, and want to take action, of course you can eat less meat, use less energy and fuel, and reduce your waste. But the truth is, 71% of global emissions are caused by the actions of just 100 companies. The actions of private individuals will not make a significant enough change; we need to work together. • Get involved. Contact SIW at www.siw.nl/en to find out about volunteer opportunities in the Netherlands or abroad. You can work in nature, help refugees, and support your community. In Eindhoven, visit www.eindhovendoetforvolunteers. nl to search for a huge variety of local volunteer opportunities and participate in activities right in your neighborhood. Keep in mind that non-EU citizens often need a work permit in order to volunteer in the Netherlands, and you generally cannot volunteer if you have a

Do research and ask specific questions about where your money is invested, where your fuel comes from, and where your energy comes from. • Get political. Donor Register For your information: What's a Donor Register? In the Donor Register you fill in your choice about the donation of your organs and tissues after your death. You can fill in your choice online or by post. It is important that you choose. Then your partner or family will know whether you are a donor or not. The new Donor Register will start on 1 July 2020. Anyone in the Netherlands aged 18 and about who is registered in a Dutch municipality will then be entered in the Donor Register. Foreigners in the Netherlands and organ donation The Donor Act is not only for people with Dutch nationality. Foreigners are also covered by the Donors Act if they are registered with a Dutch municipality. This is currently the case and will continue to be the case under the new Donors Act (active donor registration). Sometimes foreigners only stay in the Netherlands for a short time. Three years after they started living in the Netherlands, they receive a letter asking them to fill in a choice. Foreigners can also fill in a choice at an earlier stage. They do not have to wait until they are asked to do so. If no choice is filled in until they have received a letter, the partner and family will decide on organ and tissue donation. Holiday Celebrations We are approaching the holiday season again. It is the season to be jolly‌ to spend the season with your family and loved ones. Where the days are short and the nights are long. Internationals in a new location need to find their way through, their new home country’s traditions and habits. Some people choose to return home for the holiday season, others choose to stay. Both can be very stressful ;-). This time of the year can be a very difficult period for internationals in another country who have left their (extended) family in their home country. Some of the more introvert internationals might find it particularly difficult to find a connection with others. People are tending to stay home during the colder and darker time of the year. So it can be quite important to start the hobby now, to do a course or find out what is going on in the city. To get that connection with people that have the same interests both local and internationally so that you are able to build up your social circle in the city you are living. These could be people from work, or a hobby that you have always wanted to start, through the social media networks which you might have joined. There might be events happening which could be interesting to visit. It is important to make that effort to find a connection with other people. It is also the season for the locals or other internationals to invite those people who are unable to return to their families or loved ones, to join together and enjoy the festive season together. You might never know if you might meet a lifelong friend or just an acquaintance to make wonderful memories. Enjoy the holiday season to all.

How a young Albanian woman does business in six languages Kaltrina Avdiaj

Kaltrina Avdiaj Before enrolling as an International Business student at the Fontys in Eindhoven, Kaltrina Avdiaj (22) spent most of her life in her hometown Tirana, the capital of Albania. Due to her father’s work, she also lived in Carlisle, Pennsylvania (2009-2010) and Brussels (2014-2015). Her parents and brother (17) are in Albania. So, you already had quite some international experience before coming to Eindhoven? “Yes, I did. Especially the year in Brussels and the gap year I took afterwards gave me the chance to explore much of Europe. Therefore, I was also quite familiar with the Netherlands. It was difficult to make the decision. I looked at different universities

I’ve now been in the same student house for a year and hope I don’t need to pack it all in again shortly. It’s a nice house, with eight students, both Dutch and international.” You said you hadn’t mapped out your future, but what are some plans, if any? “After I graduate next summer, I would love to work for an international company. The idea of an international workplace and colleagues appeals to me. Maybe further down the road I could set up my own business. In Eindhoven I’ve learned that I thrive on being surrounded by as many cultures and nationalities as can be.”

The Indian community in Eindhoven is growing fast, for example, the number of students from India is the highest amongst all internationals on High Tech Campus. Although not a student Rajesh Rao also works in HTC for Signify (formerly Philips Lighting) as a Strategic Buyer – Software & Licenses. He, his wife Keya Kar and their daughter Teesta lived in Sweden for 3 years, and moved to the Netherlands in 2015. Talking with the Alderman Stijn Steenbakkers

More and more internationals come to Eindhoven for work and after a few years decide to stay. For people from India and Pakistan for example this can be a culture shock. But also some "born-and-raised" Eindhovenaren have problems with Eindhoven transforming into an international, dynamic city. Eindhoven Municipality recognizes this possible problem and responds with projects to get both parties on the same page. These projects are focussing on the daily things where inhabitants of Eindhoven have to deal with, like living, working, education and recreation.

In the next editions of HOWDO, alderman of the city will explain us about projects in their own task schedule to let the people who live in Eindhoven feel like they are at home. We start off with Stijn Steenbakkers. Stijn is responsible for economics, Brainport, Innovation, education and sports.

Behind the Veils: Revealing Mata Hari by Rebekah Villon

Mata Hari

The life of Mata Hari is an extraordinary tale, full of risks and reversals, secrets and revelations, pleasure and pain. Like the Dance of the Seven Veils that she introduced to Paris, it is surrounded with mysteries, contradictions, and intrigue. Today, Mata Hari is the archetype of the femme fatale, the masterful seductress and spy. In her day, wartime intelligence agencies used her in their intrigues against each other, each spinning a tale of her seductions and betrayals, and all these competing stories and myths remain firmly in place to this day. Even Mata Hari herself is an unreliable narrator, weaving her own myths from the threads of her life, inventing and reinventing herself as circumstances required. So we enter this tale knowing that it is full of illusions and allusions, and that the real truths may forever be unknown. This is part one of a six part series exploring the life, loves, and legacy of the legendary Mata Hari.

39

Leeuwarden was a thriving little agricultural city, rich in history, untouched by the industrial revolution. Her father, a man with a poor reputation as a spendthrift and schemer, owned a hat shop and had become wealthy speculating in the oil industry. He treated his oldest daughter like a princess, sending her to exclusive schools, buying her lavish gifts, and letting her travel in an extraordinary goatdrawn carriage. At school, Margreet became known for her intelligence and aptitude with languages, her tendency toward exaggeration (she told the other children she lived in a castle), and her exotic appearance. She had striking dark hair and eyes, and wore red dresses to school. The other children, with their fair hair and somber clothes, couldn't help but notice her, remember her, and react to her exaggerations and tall tales. She was popular and well-liked, but perhaps not well trusted. In her early life, between 1880-1890, the growing farming crisis affected every part of life in Friesland. The economy suffered, huge waves of farmers emigrated to America, and finally Margreet's father went bankrupt in 1889. He then had an affair, and

Learn to speak as a local Would you like to learn to speak better Dutch, English or German within a short time period? Do you feel that you are quite familiar with the language but that you sometimes just cannot find the right words? Then our language clinics are perfect to help you increase your speaking skills and vocabulary knowledge. In only 8 weeks you will be on your way to better language proficiency and more language confidence. Is it possible to learn to speak a foreign language better in a short amount of time? That question was the reason STE Languages decided to develop a new type of training course: Language Clinics. During classical language courses speaking, listening, reading and writing skills are all equally employed. When attending a language clinic the focus is entirely on speaking skills and that is precisely what can make the difference when using this skill in daily practice. The trainers who teach these courses are "native speakers" who can help students really understand a language. Every lesson is packed with tips and advice Language clinics are characterized by their short duration: eight weekly lessons of two hours each. The groups are small and the topics focus on current affairs. Students learn to participate effectively in meetings, hold presentations, give feedback and effectively communicate on a range of subjects. Students will also learn how to use common colloquialisms but will also be made aware of common language mistakes. Every lesson is packed with tips, tricks and insights that are directly applicable in daily and working life. Learn to speak fluently Language clinics are available in both the Dutch and English language. Whatever language you choose, every clinic has an interactive focus and students quickly increase their vocabulary and learn to both listen better and speak more fluently. Clinics aim to give your language confidence a boost and make you better equipped at conveying your message across.

Wander with me The sun is shining. I look outside the window and smile. My new journey has just begun and I couldn’t be happier! I am sitting in a cosy coffee place in the Gracia District in Barcelona, sipping my cappuccino. In a few days I’m leaving for a new travel adventure. All the way to Brazil. How long I will stay or how my life will look like the upcoming months, is a big mystery. Just the way I like it. I did some calculation and figured I’ve spend more than three years of my life on the road. Without fixed plans, just wandering with a healthy dose of blind faith. And though this lifestyle surely comes with sacrifices, I wouldn’t want to change it for a thing. Traveling makes me feel alive.

But I can say from the bottom of my heart that my journeys have made me an incredibly rich person. So right now I am at the start of a new adventure. Many of HOWDO's readers will understand how that feels, as they are also travelers. They have given up their homes and way of life for a job or a study abroad. Many of these expats got to know the Dutch culture and brought a bit of their own to us. It’s always a pleasure to read their stories about Eindhoven in this magazine. The customs, the cultural differences, the things they like about our beautiful city. All these expats give us a glimpse into their lives and the things that Eindhoven has to offer. In the coming months I will do exactly the opposite. I will take a bit of Eindhoven to the other side of the world to discover the way of life there. In the jungle, the big cities and everything in between. I will immerse myself in different cultures and share my experiences with you in HOWDO. Therefore I would be happy to take you on my adventure and let you travel a bit with me. You can follow my travels on Instagram and Facebook @hippienezz.

Hasta luego! Eline

New Year festivities in the Netherlands December is a month of festivities in the Netherlands. It all starts with St. Nicholas which is celebrated by young and old. But almost as soon as he has weighed anchor and set sail for Spain in his trusted steamboat, the Dutch are making plans for Christmas and the New Year. Whereas Christmas is generally a more intimate celebration when families get together for a festive meal, New Year’s celebrations are much more exuberant. How do you survive New Year’s Eve and the countless

where he got a job at the university. The first years were very very hard. She spent also two years alone with her two children. When she had to move to a village close to Eindhoven, not a lot of people spoke English. So she started learning Dutch online and the other day her neighbour asked her if she would like to practice the language. That helped her a lot. She started to cook Italian meals and making different cakes for other people. She became also an Italian cooking teacher and put all her passion in it. ”I think cooking is my Italian DNA, it comes first from my grandmother and my mum. I am very happy when I can mix ingredients and see other people enjoying it.” “Very soon I will open my own bakery. I am so excited! In the bakery I also will work with children, who have different problems. My dream is coming true!” www.sweetisland.eu

“I want to do what I really love. That is my contribution to the world” What comes to my mind is the tv programme ‘Taarten van Abel’, where children share all kind of stories while baking and creating all kind of cakes. By not looking into each others eyes they share what is in their hearts. Bassant is originally from Egypt and came more than 6 years ago to The Netherlands. In Egypt she tells, you will only be succesful when you become a doctor or an engineer. It is in the mindset of people that this is the only way to succeed. So, you always do your best to learn hard, show your parents that you are happy with it, and try your best to be one of them. In the beginning there was no thinking ‘is this really what I want to do?’ She describes her move from Egypt to the Netherlands as a double transition. Leaving her parents house and coming to a complete new country with different rules and challenges. That’s a lot. The first 6 months she wanted to take time to adapt to the new situation, so in her cv was a gap and that seemed to some organisations a big questionmark. Learning Dutch

The secret about learning Dutch by Monique Mols

I recently met a woman who lives in Veldhoven. She told me about her new neighbor, a Japanese man. She was sad to discover he did not speak Dutch as she did not speak English. But she very much wanted to connect with her neighbor so “I just invited him for a bike ride.” Together, they rode around Veldhoven and she showed him the sights. I am sure this involved a lot of sign language but the connection was made. I hugged her and told her I hoped that every international settling in Veldhoven had a neighbor like her.

be able to join the conversation. And you may not get to know your lovely Dutch neighbor. I know, it is not easy to learn Dutch. Not only because the language is hard but because Dutch people will immediately switch to English when they notice your accent. They either want to be helpful or show off their language skills. So let me tell you a secret about the Dutch: we have an inferiority complex. We just cannot imagine that anyone would want to learn our language. But here’s the trick: if you insist on speaking Dutch and you explain you really want to learn, Dutch people will melt and love you forever. There is nothing more endearing to a

Life and death are both meaningless. They happen or don't happen for reasons that have no weight, from which you learn nothing. There is no wisdom in the world. We are all fortune's fools. Here is the earth and it is so beautiful and we are so lucky to be here with one another and we are so stupid and what happens to us is so stupid and we don't deserve our stupid luck. The depiction of Trump's campaign and election is cutting. TO GOOD TO GO Of course we have to be careful with our poor expats, and think about how we can help them spend their limited budget ... Recently I came across a very nice app: Too Good To Go... Food is wasted throughout the chain, from the field to the table. And with that not only the food itself is wasted, but also the raw materials used to produce that food: water, agricultural land, labor and transport. Food wastage has many harmful consequences for the environment it accounts for 8% of global CO2 emissions. And that is bad news for our earth. Every year, one-third of all food produced worldwide is thrown away. At Too Good To Go they want to put an end to food waste by creating a world where food is produced is food consumed. Millions of meals have already been saved through Too Good To Go! ... They help restaurants, bakeries, supermarkets etc. reduce their daily food waste. They have created an app on both Google Play and App Store. Download the app and save good food. Eat for a small price and have a major impact on the environment. Make the difference!

CHECK IT OUT ! Greetings, Peter
