We at HOWDO would like to welcome you back after a very pleasant Dutch summer. Chances are of course that you’ve spent some of that time in your home country. Despite being a non-Olympic year it has been a very sportive year in which the Dutch unfortunately hardly played a role… Congrats therefore for our Japanese readers with the surprising, but much deserved, victory of Naomi Osaka at the US Open. Serbian Novak Djokovic pulled it off twice. After winning Wimbledon he was also undefeatable at the US Open. The British turned out to be the fastest cyclists: Geraint Thomas winning the Tour de France and Simon Yates the Vuelta. Being beaten by the Germans in football is still a sensitive subject for many Dutch people but we have no problem congratulating our eastern neighbours with Angelique Kerber’s win at Wimbledon. The main event was, as always, the World Championship football. And no, this time it wasn’t Brazil, nor Germany or Spain but our French friends who took the cup home! Hopefully you’ve enjoyed some recreational sports yourself this summer. And if the weather gods are favourable this fall you can enjoy cycling or walking in and around Eindhoven. For example in het Stadswandelpark in Eindhoven or ‘t Oude Wandelpark in Valkenswaard. Another way to enjoy both nature and sports is to play up to 18 holes at Haviksoord Golf Club in Leende. Been active enough and just need to relax? Then visit Gasterij and NatuurSpa Landschot and get completely pampered with unique treatments and delicious, natural food. Of course you will read all about these activities and many practical tips in this issue. Enjoy and HOWDO!

Sing along with Amice! Singing in a choir is a very popular activity in the Netherlands, which has one of the largest choir cultures in Europe. No fewer than 1.7 million Dutch people sing in organized choirs. The ladies of Zanggroep Amice understand the popularity of choir singing like no others. Singing together makes you happy and gives you energy
and a sense of solidarity. We want to spread that feeling and share it with others. That’s why we’re organizing a 'singing and making music' workshop in the Veldhoven library on Saturday 6 October, especially for women with a migration background. An excellent opportunity to get acquainted with singing in a choir, and a taste of Dutch culture. Participation is free, completely free of obligation, and suitable for everyone with or without choral experience. If you’d like more information about Zanggroep Amice or the workshop, or you want to get in touch with us, visit our website at www.zanggroepamice.nl/workshop

Honest and freshly prepared chicken DO 1 NOV THE HUMAN LEAGUE ‘Don’t You Want Me Baby’ doesn’t require an introduction. In a musical Pavlov reaction, everyone sings along to “I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar” when the iconic synths open their biggest hit ‘Don’t You Want Me Baby.’ But The Human League aren’t only known for this sing-along tune. ‘Being Boiled’, ‘Mirror Man’, ‘Fascination’, ‘The Lebanon’, and ‘Human’ are also big titles in the synthpop scene. The group have toured tirelessly since the late ‘70s, and they still pull off a great party under the supervision of master of ceremonies Philip Oakey. A live show to remember, comical jokes from Oakey, and those wonderful, buzzing, growling synths. And we all sing at the top of our lungs: ‘Don’t you want me baby… Don’t you want me, oooohhhohhohhoh!’ More info: www.effenaar.nl

continues to evolve Not version 4.0, because although we provide a digital website, we are not a machine but a team of people ensuring this news site does its job every day. We live, we work, we talk, we have fun… and now it’s time to grow. In almost 10 years of existence, our organisation has seen a number of organic transformations as new volunteers joined us, bringing with them the skills, energy, and enthusiasm to implement the changes that helped us evolve. This is the nature of our company. People with drive and passion. Occasionally this has also required us to let go of certain dreams, when people had to leave. However, as mentioned in this week’s annual general meeting, this has never caused us to stagnate. If we’re not growing, we’re stable. We have a great year ahead, with developments in cluding a brand new, state-of-the-art website with lots
of opportunities for cooperation with other commercial and non-profit parties, and an updated image. With increased automation, this new website will allow us to work more efficiently too. Coinciding with this, we are also undergoing some internal reorganisation. This includes more delegation of managerial tasks and increased engagement with our team members and our reader group. We ARE the (local) international community in miniature form, and we want to enhance that group feeling. Our plan is to foster a Friends of Eindhoven News community. Together we can inform, help, and have fun. This includes local residents like you. We are ALL global people.
11
We’ll also be celebrating a significant milestone in the upcoming year - our 10-year anniversary. A whole decade of working almost daily to include non-Dutch residents in updates about the Eindhoven/Brainport region. Can you imagine how many people have read our news articles since 2009? Currently we see in excess of 100,000 unique visitors a year. This means, we have been informing… let’s say at least 750,000 people?
We have a heart, and it continues to beat - strongly

Relocation services Nowadays, when moving to another country, there are many ways to find what you’re looking for in your new location. There are various online options for finding goods and services, and Google Translate can help with any language barrier roadblocks. Facebook also has several different expat communities that can help point you in the right direction.
Mariëlle Owen-Duffels Eindhoven and surrounding areas Tulip Expats Services BV postal address: P.O. Box 82301, 2508 EH The Hague + 31 (0) 6 53147086 headoffice + 31 (0) 70 2208156 marielle@tulipexpatsservices.com tulipexpatsservices.com
But which goods and services are the right ones? Are there other local products that could also do the job? Who can I trust? How does it work here? All these questions – and more – will come up at one point or another. Moving is a difficult and stressful time; having some general information available to you before or upon your arrival can be very reassuring. It also helps to have someone you can trust nearby to help you with the basics. For example: how does the health system work, where can I find a doctor? Do I have to pay a tax for my pet? Can I drive using my current driver’s licence, or do I need to take another test or get it exchanged? What are the main differences in the rules of the road here, compared to my country? What is the most common method of payment for goods and services? How does waste disposal work – what is picked up and when? As a destination provider, we can answer all these questions and help you get settled in. With so many nuances and differences, this type of assistance will make integrating easier for you and/or your employees so that you/they can concentrate on what you’re here to do. The relocation services we provide are tailored to the family structure and home/host country combination.

Olympia provides significant jobs!
For us at Olympia finding work is our work. We strive to help you find not just any job but one that really matters.
Imagine if we, as organisations, employers, and employees, made a habit of reflecting on the meaning of the work we do. We'd make different choices. Share more knowledge. We'd become more aware of our surroundings and learn about our lives. We'd fulfill functions that matter, because we’d know why we're doing it. Work that matters We don't just help people find work, we strive to place them in positions that make them happy and allow them to do what they're good at. We help them adapt to a changing world. We work on development, giving people the chance to discover their own talents and motivations by introducing them to employers who help
them reach their full potential. We do this through jobs, internships, knowledge sharing, and training. Because we want people to be long-term employed in a position that matters to them. We work with organisations that share our values. In an ever-changing labour market, we are a partner for companies and individuals who want to develop themselves. Because when you are aware of the importance of your contribution, its value increases significantly. Success lies in connecting an online proposition with the real world. In other words, speaking face-to-face with people and guiding them into employment.

Buying a house in the Netherlands With help of a buying agent From renting to buying A number of things are involved when you buy a home. Quite a lot will change, especially if you are currently renting. For one thing, your expenses will be different for an owner-occupied home: • You will need homeowner's insurance. • You will have to pay property tax. • Water boards charge different rates for homeowners. • You will have to cover maintenance costs for the home.
both a buyer's agent and a seller's agent, and each will have different roles in the transaction and have to be paid separately. Funda.nl is a useful website for house hunting. Check www.funda.nl regularly for new properties, so that you become better and better informed about what you want to buy.
Buying A property can go up or down in value. If the value of your home increases, you as the owner will benefit financially as you build home equity. However, you may also find that when you want to sell your home, it's value is lower then when you bought it. Buying therefore, involves risk. Get informed about the process and the legalities so that you do not lose out financially.
A buying agent can help you during the whole process. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. We are happy to assist you!

Increase your chances of finding your dream home in a turbulent market?
“A home away from home!” agreement will be drafted and we’ll make sure your new home is clean and habitable prior to move-in.
Renting the right place to live in the current housing market isn’t easy. How can you increase your chances of finding your ideal new home? If you’re looking for a new home, there are a variety of housing corporations, estate agents, and other rental specialists to choose from. You can also browse rental websites such as Pararius, and you’ll often find listings on estate agents’ own websites before they’re posted anywhere else. Once you find a house that meets your needs, contact the estate agent as soon as possible. A lessor doesn’t want their property to remain vacant any longer than necessary, so respond to listings that are available from the date you’re planning to move in.
If you dont have time to navigate this process yourself, you’re having trouble with the details, or you simply can’t find the right property for you, contact Stoit!

The first 9 holes at Haviksoord Golf Club were built in 1976 - partÂly on agricultural grounds and partly in woods planted in the 1930s. The grounds also included a lake, which was built in the 1970s. In 2006, Haviksoord was extended to an 18-hole course. All new holes were built in the existing woods. Both designs were based on the landscape to ensure the course remains as natural-looking as possible. Course maintenance is paramount, with particular care given to the Bent grass greens. Marriage,, registered partnership, and cohabitation agreement In the Netherlands, couples can opt for one of three types of official living arrangement: marriage, registered partnership, or a cohabitation agreement. Marriage and registered partnership are both regulated by law. It is also possible to sign a cohabitation agreement. Another option is to simply live together with no formal agreement. Marriage / registered partnership Marriage ceremonies are performed by the Registrar of Births, Deaths, Marriages and Registered Partnerships. To marry in the Netherlands, at least one partner must be Dutch or resident in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, a marriage automatically takes place under the general community property rule. As of 2018, this means that all property and debts obtained by each partner during the marriage are shared. Inheritances and donations are excluded from community property. This could have major consequences in the event a partner passes away or in case of rdivorce. It is possible to exclude certain items from community property. Bequests and inheritances can only be excluded by a testator. Forthcoming partners could have a notary draw up a marriage contract to stipulate how these diverge from the guidelines of community property. A registered partnership is treated similarly to a marriage. If partners don’t wish to marry, they can opt for a registered partnership. Cohabitation agreement A cohabitation agreement is a written agreement, usually drawn up by a notary, stipulating matters surrounding cohabitation. In some cases, you may need a notarised cohabitation agreement in order to qualify for certain benefits such as partner pension schemes and fringe benefits.
All decisions could potentially have major tax and legal consequences. Regardless of which option you choose, if any, it is always wise to consult a financial planner. info@fac-eindhoven.nl www.mortgage040.nl

't Parelbosch:
Healthy food and warm meals at our daycare!
At ’t Parelbosch daycare we focus on feeding children healthy food. After consulting with both parents and nutrionists, we’ve chosen to serve a hot, balanced meal at noon. Nutritionist and mother Ay Lin Kho relates her experience: “I’m very happy with the focus on healthy food at ’t Parelbosch, and the switch to a hot meal at noon. A well-balanced meal contains everything children need. In the afternoon the children are still alert, whereas in the evening they’re usually tired, which makes it hard to feed them properly! I’m hearing a lot of positive reactions from other parents whose children are suddenly eating a lot more. My daughter loves the food. I hear she eats everything on her plate and is an example to others, I’m proud of that!” Ay Lin wrote the book ‘Healthy & Happy Without a Diet’. The daycare staff’s knowledge of nutritious food is partly down to this book. “My book is about food and the brain, and it contains a lot of facts about nutrition. I’m glad my expertise is being used by ’t Parelbosch”, says Ay Lin. To which extent is healthy food the responsibility of a daycare? Ay Lin answers: “of course parents have primary responsibilty in choosing the right food for their children. But a daycare shares this responsibility, and they have to set a good example. Parents often don’t have time to research or cook healthy food. That’s why it’s great that the children get most of what they need at daycare!”

Funny facts & figures about the NL Do you know the video “Top 10 Amazing Facts about the Netherlands” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWkxUxCDaIE). Let’s review those amazing and funny facts. 10. Flood Insurance: Very wise, but if you live in the Groningen area make sure you take out earthquake coverage too… 09. Standing Tall: No doubt the Dutch are tall, but it’s not because they need to keep their heads above the water (see point 2). It’s because, as children, they eat pindakaas (peanut butter) and get a good night’s sleep. 08. Make it a Heineken: Big business, but I heard connoisseurs say Belgian beer is the best, or is it German or Czech? 07. Midwives: Typically Dutch. Indeed, many Dutch women traditionally prefer to give birth at home, and midwives do play an important role in this. 06. Vincent Van Gogh: Visit the Vincentre museum in nearby Nuenen and stop by the “The Van Gogh Village” to check out the latest fad, the "Vincent van Gogh Bike”, inspired by the famous Sunflowers painting. 05. Wooden Clogs & Windmills: Clogs? Nobody wears them anymore. Look at the windmill at the Boschdijk in northern Eindhoven. Windmills are definitely a symbol of the struggle against water and the need to dominate nature. 04. House of Orange: We missed the Oranje fans at the last World Cup, so the Dutch suddenly discovered they also like the Belgians! 03. Rain Suits & Bicycles: Did you know it is very CHIC to ride one? The first C stands for Clean, H for Healthy, I for Individualistic and the last C for… Cheap. The fiets, a shortcut for Dutch culture! 02. Sea Level: We all know God created the world and the Dutch created the Netherlands. With an elevation of 19m in Eindhoven, we keep our feet dry (see point 10). 01. The Most Liberal: Yes, think of the soft drugs policy, same-sex marriage, and euthanasia. But the Netherlands is also quite conservative, with political parties like the SGP, who have long excluded women from party membership. A last (fake) fact could be: “The Netherlands is below sea level so the Dutch have to smoke soft drugs to stay high”… LOL!

SHARE THE VIBE with
Avril Guarino “We live close to the Stadswandelpark and I love to stroll through this park. I never stop or sit, just wander, look around, and enjoy being surrounded by trees. I am originally from Le Mans, in the north of France, and lived in Marseille, in the south, for several years. There are parks in those cities, but none like this one in the middle of Eindhoven. Here, you don’t see any buildings, only statues, trees and birds. I love that.”
Volunteer “Two years ago, I was living in Marseille and I decided to go and live in Japan for a year. My trip began and ended in Hiroshima, a city known for the devastating stories and pictures of the nuclear bomb that was dropped in 1945. Nowadays, though, Hiroshima is a wonderful city full of amazing, creative people. The locals live life to the max and I really felt good there. Although, my trip was quite intense. I moved to a new city every month, I loved that way of life. Just working as a volunteer, travelling with my backpack, without worrying about anything. It was quite an experience. Community art house “I helped to co-create a kind of community art house, the other house Japan, in Okawa close to Shizuoka. The owner had a dream and wanted to start a house where entrepreneurs from all over the world could live, work, cooperate and co-create. I helped him with the design of the entire project and took care of the social media aspect.” “I am a graphic designer and I can work anywhere. If there’s WiFi available and I have my laptop, I can work. I have my own webcomic, depicting myself and my partner. Humorous and fun. It’s my way of expressing life.”

“This park is amazing, it’s a gift to have so many trees in town”
Stadswandelpark “My boyfriend and I met in Hiroshima, Japan and that’s a lovely story to share too. Yesterday we celebrated our first anniversary as a couple.” “He is an engineer and originally from Canada. He wanted to live and work in the Netherlands - in Rotterdam actually! But when I was in Rotterdam It didn’t feel good. I didn’t feel the vibe, like the one I feel here. Here, I meet a lot of other internationals and, you know, you hear all kinds of languages in the street. In Japan, you only hear Japanese…” Surrounded by people “For me it’s sometimes difficult to be alone all the time as a freelancer, and I’m not happy when I only have contact with people through email or WhatsApp. That’s why I go to seats2meet at the Parktheater. No, it’s not talking to others that I miss most, but I love to be surrounded by people.” “We have a lot of BBQ parties with our neighbors, fellow expats from Chile and Argentina. I think it’s easier for expats to connect with each other. We are used to having short-term friendships and we know connections can sometimes only last for a short period in our life.” “I do feel very good here and the Stadswandelpark is my happy place. I like to watch the birds, especially the blue ones. They’re so fluffy.” “In Eindhoven, people are at ease and very friendly. This city is home to me, albeit just for now.” “My dream? I’d love to live as a digital nomad again, together with my boyfriend. I don’t know when this will happen, but I never stop dreaming!”
Eddie Mol and Linde ten Broek meet internationals who have chosen Eindhoven to be their city. In this column, ‘Share the vibe’, we talk about their life, love, dreams, and of course their favorite spot in town that makes them happy. Eddie Mol, photographer (www.eddiemol.nl) and Linde ten Broek writes and tells your story (www.soulstories.nl).

Discover how much fun learning to swim can be at the Tongelreep Mallika Upadya and her two children, aged 7 and 9, have been attending swimming lessons at the Tongelreep for the past four years. During that time both children earned the swimming certificates A, B, and C, and are currently taking lessons in swimming skills. They both look forward to their lessons every Friday, something no-one would have expected considering that just four years ago they were afraid of the water. Learning through play A lot of expats arrive in the Netherlands with no swimming experience, even though the Netherlands has so many bodies of water. At the Tongelreep, the first thing our experienced swimming instructors do is show kids how much fun swimming can be. The children get used to being in the water while learning proper swimming techniques through play. Never be afraid of the water again It wasn’t a coincidence that Mallika’s son was afraid of the water. During his first swimming lesson, he slipped and landed in the pool. This startled him so much he refused to get into the water again. “Thanks to the help and personal attention from the swimming instructors at the Tongelreep, he now feels comfortable in the water again. Just look at him now; he jumps into the pool like he was born to do it.” Mallika will soon take her final swimming test for the A certificate. “I also conquered my fears and I’m very proud of that!”

Dutch food Every country has some type of traditional or well-known food. For the French it’s the baguette, or maybe the croissant. In Germany it might be ‘wurst’ or ‘brezel’. But what Dutch food is there? What food can you eat in the Netherlands? When you first arrive in the Netherlands and walk out of the airport or train station, a cafeteria or ‘friettent’ may be one of the first things you see. These establishments sell a variety of deep-fried snacks, such as the tra ditional ‘frikandel’, a sausage made of minced meat. Although not the most pleasant food to look at, the frikandel can be served as a ‘spe ciaal’, which comes with onions, curry sauce, and ‘frietsaus’, a type of sauce for fries. Another delicacy offered at these eateries is ‘bitterballen’. A mini ver sion of the kroket, bitterballen are deep fried, breadcrumb-covered balls containing meat or fish. Bitterballen are often served as a sharing snack at cafés and restaurants.
Of course, you can also simply order fries. One special dish is the ‘friet kapsalon’ - fries covered with shoarma meat and cheese. This type of food is also available from FEBO hole-in-the-wall dispensers, where customers can pay through a slot and open a small window to retrieve their snack. There are also several sweet snacks on offer. One of the more famous ones is the ‘stroopwafel’, a waffle biscuit with caramel between two very thin layers. These are often available freshly-made at market stalls, or you can buy packets of them in the supermarket. ‘Vlaai’, a speciality from the province of Limburg, can also be bought in supermarkets. Vlaai is a Dutch tart
that comes with various fillings such as fruits and custard, often topped with crumble or pastry. If you want something sweet for breakfast, look no further than ‘hagelslag’. These are sprinkles served on sliced bread - that come in a range of flavours such as milk, dark, and white chocolate and va rious shapes such as flakes. One thing that may be strange to non-Dutch people is the amount of bread the locals eat. Typically, a Dutch breakfast consists of bread with a selection of toppings (‘broodbeleg’) such as cheese, ham, hagelslag, or chocolate spread. Bread is also a popular choice for lunch sandwiches, or ‘boterham’.

Eindhoven’s international community grows by the day. Not everyone has chosen to come and live in this city, and they find themselves a bit at odds. They don’t know how to connect with the community or how to recognize and appreciate its beauty. This happens because it’s quite a peculiar city, continuously evolving. It’s a city that needs to be discovered - where, if you’re not curious and don’t lift your gaze from the ground, you end up missing all its most endearing and unique aspects.

Column from expat to expat
That’s why I decided to write this column, an ideal dialogue between expat and expat, to provide some important tips and answer questions we pose to one another daily. First of all, do you like the city? I love it profoundly, I adore the serendipity of the people who inhabit it – there’s always a smile at hand and the will to live a full life abounds. The southern Dutch people are much more relaxed and available - they love to have fun, eat, and drink in good company and this is why I consider them very Mediterranean-like. As soon as they realise you don’t speak the local language, they reply to you in English and very kindly. I have seldom encountered difficulties in being understood; for the past two years I’ve communicated with everyone I meet without any problems. Although, I am studying the local language because I think learning the basics - at the very least - is the mark of a true citizen. Yes, Dutch is a complex and difficult language, but even then, we’re lucky to live in the south! The G is soft, the R is round, and every word sounds much more musical. But how do we get more informed, how do we meet people and stay upto-date with what’s happening in town? Luckily, there are sources such as this magazine provided for us. However, it isn’t enough. My suggestion is to follow the various expat groups on social media because, at the end of the day, the plethora of doubts and questions is quite typical. Who is my doctor? Where do I go grocery shopping? Where can I find this product? We help each other out as much as we can, and it’s a pleasure to lend a hand to those who are still finding their feet. Indeed, there are spaces like the Hub center and the Expat Center (the latter is more focused on economic and financial matters) but there are also a number of initiatives stemming from the lower tiers. These are fostered by us – people who want to spend time together, make new friends and enjoy their free time. My advice is to be positive and proactive. The energy that propagates through the air is unique. Allow yourself to be seduced and you’ll see - our community will become stronger and stronger, more integrated, and more cooperative.
