Editor’s Letter...
I have been told we are in for forty days of hot weather, by my ten year old! That will do for me, even if it’s not true, I prefer the positive outlook rather than the negative! St Wilfrid’s Summer fayre was certainly blessed this year, I have no idea how we managed it but the day was lovely, with only a few sprinkles towards the end. The Fayre raised over £2000 for the PTA to spend in school and a lovely day was had by all with help from so many staff, parents and family. The PTA extends their thanks to you all. Looking ahead, if forty days of sunshine is in store, the Auckley Show will be a belter! Everything is now in place for what promises to be one of their best shows ever with a new dog talent show added to their list of entertainment! Good luck everyone, you can find the shows schedule in this month’s Arrow, don’t forget, The Auckley Show offers free admission with free car parking! Doncaster Council have organised free family fun days throughout the villages over the summer holidays, check page 8 to see what is on and where. To end on a more serious note, there is a petition for a safe crossing area on Doncaster Road in Branton. As all locals will know, the road is incredibly busy at peak times and it’s not just airport traffic! New housing developments that have taken place in recent years have added weight to the problem and there are more proposals ahead. The petition is not against new development but will ask the council to consider a safe area for residents young and old to cross this very dangerous road. Please support this petition, you will find it in Branton post office until the beginning of September. The deadline for the September issue for advertising and articles is Wednesday 22nd August. The Arrow will be delivered from Friday 31st August.
Best Wishes Michelle Sidebottom

News, News, News, News, News, News... Branton Petition for Safe Crossing Area on Doncaster Road. The traffic on Doncaster Road increases
Neil Redeyoff being ‘gunged’ by Bailey Lowe
Finningley Church of England School Fayre took place on Monday 16th July. The children had to vote on who got gunged - the Head or the Vicar...the Vicar lost! However, the Head resulted to some skulduggery by offering a non-uniform day if the children voted in favour of the vicar. It worked and Neil raised £48.00 in the process! Overall, the fayre generated £793 towards school funds and a fun day was had by all—except Neil!!
The Annual Richard Langton Memorial Trophy Auckley FC V The Three Horse Shoes FC, will this year be played on Sunday August 5th at Riverside Park Auckley, with kick off at 10.30am. This match is played annually, the week before the Auckley Show to remember a young man (Richard Langton) who played for Auckley FC & who at the age of 28 lost his life to cancer. Raffle tickets will be sold during the game & after at The Eagle & Child. All proceeds from this years game will be donated to Weston Park Hospital.

all the time. The weight of some traffic and the speed is at times alarming. The present crossings with the island in the centre can create more of a problem than they solve, especially for those with pushchairs, scooters, wheel chairs or bikes! If you are stranded there with cars, lorries or buses whizzing past you, it can be a frightening experience, especially if you have young children to supervise or you are elderly. Some drivers are very aware of the problem and stop to let you pass, but most carry on. There is a petition which is currently being held at Branton Post Office, if you agree we deserve a proper safe area to cross this road that runs through the heart of our village, please sign it. The petition will be submitted to Doncaster Council in September along with a request for a new safe crossing.
The Help the Heroes Charity Concert Featuring Amoroso and Una Voce at Hill House school in Auckley, raised a staggering £1400. Zoe Webster who helped to organise the event wishes to thank everyone who supported the event and to those who took part.

News, News, News, News, News, News... Strawberry Tea and Songs of Praise at Auckley Parish Centre This year our Strawberry Tea and Songs of Praise service was moved from the first Sunday in July to the 8 th, because on the 1st we were all busy in Sheffield Cathedral celebrating our new Curate Louise’s Ordination. We were pleased that Louise could join us at the Strawberry Tea and we enjoyed learning a little about her and her journey to our Parishes, through Neil’s ‘Interview with a Curate’. The Wimbledon Men’s Final was taking place on the same afternoon so there was a bit of competition for supporters, however this didn’t seem to have an adverse effect on our numbers and we were almost a full house. Thanks to modern technology it was possible to record the tennis to watch later and amazingly no-one spoilt it by disclosing the result. The disappointment came later when watching the recording as Agassi beat Murray!
thank you to everyone who helped, both with the preparation, donations for the stalls, and on the day. Thank you Janet for playing the music. Thanks to all who came on the day. We hope you enjoyed it and that we will see you again next year. £616.65 was raised for Auckley Parish Church Funds.
Race For Life Maureen Marson, Cynthia Sculley, Jan Hughes, Janette Tate, Christine Jessop and Christine Styring of the Finningley Village Community Group took part in the Race for Life on the 24th June 2012. It was a good day, not too hot and not raining, we all finished the course, then met up and had lunch together with our partners in the Harvey Arms. We feel quite proud of ourselves as we raised £531.25 including £106.25 in gift aid. We would like to thank any one who sponsored us. Thank you 6 ladies from Finningley.
The hymn requests for this year were varied and included many lovely old favourites. Neil did his usual homework and provided hymn sheets that gave us some interesting background details on the composition and writers. Our ‘songs of praise’ soared joyfully to the ceiling and we all enjoyed a ‘good sing’, with some great, stirring voices. Then, TEA was served. A delicious feast, with savouries, sweets and of course strawberries and cream. There was plenty for everyone with such a choice. However, the strawberries this year became a casualty of the rainy summer and it was obvious at preparation time that many had not made the grade and had to be discarded. Unfortunately this meant that we didn’t have the usual quantity and sadly some people went without, we were really sorry to disappoint anyone. During this time the raffle, tombola and bottle stalls started to do business and a very difficult quiz sheet was attempted by teams on each table. It doesn’t seem to get any easier!

Branton’s very own
Coffee Shop If you have not yet visited this hidden treasure, you know not what you are missing!! However, if you have, you will be well aware of the treats that are in store! I can’t pass without calling in for a few scones which, I have to say, must be the largest scones I have ever seen! The Coffee Shop in Branton has now been open for over 4 months. Owner, Tony Pilsworth, (recently The Blue Bell) has just invested in a new bigger kitchen to provide a more extensive menu for his customers. Not only can you sample the mouth watering homemade cakes and treats but Tony is now able to offer home cooked food ranging from Fish and homemade chips with mushy peas to Cumberland sausage with mash. His famous pies are legendary and if you don’t have time to sit and relax in the welcoming coffee shop, you can take them away! Everything is prepared, and cooked on the premises. The coffee shop is always buzzing with activity and you will find the staff friendly and fun as well as floured up baking more delicious treats!

AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER JULY/AUGUST 2012 Flooding of Gardens Unfortunately a number of residents again experienced flooding of their gardens and garages during the recent heavy rainfall on 6 th – 8th July. The Parish Council has written to both Severn Trent and Doncaster Council to see what measures can be taken to address this problem.
Parking at Spey Drive Double parking of vehicles on the highway at Spey Drive is becoming a serious problem and, in the event of an emergency, essential services such as fire engines and ambulances would be unable to access the road. It would therefore be appreciated if residents could whenever possible park vehicles on their drives and encourage visitors to do likewise, if there is room.
Provision of New ‘Auckley’ Signs Requests have been received for Council to provide new ‘Auckley’ signs mounted on stone plinths which would be sited on the three approaches to the village. The plinths would be similar in appearance to the ones in situ at Branton. The request will be considered in December when the budget is set for the 2013/2014 financial year, and we would be interested to hear what residents think of this suggestion. If you wish to make any comments on this matter please write or email to: Clerk to the Council - Mrs. M. Caygill, 10 Ellers Lane, Auckley, Doncaster. DN9 3HZ Email: marj.caygill@doncaster.co.uk

4th Doncaster (Finningley) Scout Group News Over the last 2 years the scout hut rebuild has been the focus for major fund raising events. Events such as a tea and coffee stall, the duck race at the Auckley Show and successful race nights have helped us to raise over £1000 each! We are now up to the magic £10,000 and are pleased to say this allows us to start applying for bids and grants to further boost the pot. Work has now started on laying the footpath for the pedestrian access with thanks to Hanson Quarry for the materials and G.N.E Contractors for preparing the ground. Thanks also to all the willing hands who came brandishing a rich and varied assortment of gardening tools and wheelbarrows to move the stones and earth. The next event will be the DUCK RACE and duck numbers are already on sale....please support by sponsoring the ducks....this year we will try to teach them to swim the right way down the river!

At the Annual General Meeting held on the 30 th June, the awards were up for grabs for BEAVER, CUB and SCOUT OF THE YEAR! Well done to this year’s Beaver, Sanjeev Singh. William has joined in all the activities and camps and always shows a positive attitude. Well done William!

Scout of the year was awarded to Jodie Grant, a very easy choice and was a unanimous decision! Well done Jodie, keep up the enthusiasm and stop breaking trees (another scout joke), good scar though! The awards were followed by a barbecue and Home camp for all the scouting sections. A big thank you to all parents and helpers, without your support camps wouldn’t be able to take place! News From Finningley C of E Primary School Olympics at Hayfield On Monday 18th June we took our year fives up to the big school. Mr Huddart contacted us in May and asked us if we would like to take part in an Olympic themed day with our year five to build links between neighbouring schools and help the children get over any nerves about secondary they may have. We took all 29 pupils and had a superb day. The children were in mixed school classes and spent the morning learning about the languages and geography of many counties. Lunchtime was full of Holas and facts about the Ile De France. Hayfield gave the children a free taste of their lunch systems and the children raved about it. In the afternoon the pupils took part in Tennis, cricket and running events that were scored on team work, creative thinking and consideration of others. At the end of the day our children were full of how brilliant it had been and how many new friends they had. A real success. Filey in the Rain Anyone who was planning a trip to the coast would take a number of factors into account wouldn’t they like time of year, tide times and activities that could be done. On those grounds you would think that Thursday 21st of June being the longest day and right at the start of summer would be a really good day to choose. Fish and Chips for 206 had been ordered and plans had been drawn up for a fantastic day. Year six were off to rock pool and look at land formations on the Brigg, Years four and five had map work, leisure studies and beach activities on the cards, years three and four were collecting shells for school art and digging pirate ships on the beach and year one had beach combing, sandcastle competitions all lined up. Then the heavens opened..... They poured and the coaches had to stop for flood delays twice on the way to Filey but hey we are British and it does rain in England so we decided to make the best of it and press on. After camping out under shelters and having really nice Fish and Chips we set off on our beach hunt. The sun may not have been shining on us but we collected shells, found fossils, dug monster holes and even went in the sea. The pupils of Finningley proved to be a hardy lot with plenty of stamina. Despite being sat in nothing much more than underwear on the coach back the children said they and had a brilliant time and asked where we were going next year. I wish I could have said Antigua...

Hayfield Band On the morning of Tuesday 26 th June the Hayfield school concert band came to perform for our children. Not only was the music an excellent standard, as always, but it was wonderful to see so many of our ex pupils in the choir and band. The Jackson family seem to be providing all Doncaster’s quality drummers of late. The highlight of the show for the children was an unplugged version of Jessie J’s @it’s not about the money. In the after show melee we snapped up Travis Speight and Lois Jackson to come and teach electric guitars and drums in school next year. Rockers of the future! Track Cycle Champions. On Tuesday 3rd July we took eight of our bravest pupils to the North west of Sheffield to compete against Bawtry on the cycle speedway track in Parsons Cross. The children came from years five and six and were really fired up for the day. When we arrived the current world number three Razci Sczcpswki was racing round the track at enormous speeds. There was much gulping form our children and one did say to me ‘ we won’t go that fast will we?’. In the end they pretty much did. All pupils took part in two race meetings with the first team event going to Finningley 101-79 and the second individual skills meet being won by Jessica Eccles from our year six. As well as thrashing brakeless bikes around a banked cinder track for three hours the children also got to hold the Olympic torch and meet a real star of the sport. An excellent day. We also found out that one of ex pupils Lewis Starbuck has just been asked to be the under 18's club captain on the Doncaster knights summer tour of South Africa. The boys will be flying into Johannesburg on Saturday 20th July and returning to Heathrow on August the 4th. During their stay they will be playing matches against representative sides from different regions as well as visiting many fantastic sites of cultural and historical interest. All at Finningley CE primary congratulate Lewis and wish him well.

Hayfield girls dazzle at the Prom!
Molie Brennan, Lizzie Callaghan, Olivia Poole, Amber Moullali, Hannah Burton, Abigail Potts, Becca Entwistle, Alice Burton, Laura Sherret, Paige Blanshard, The Hayfield School Prom was another event where the sun dazzled, or maybe it was just the amount of glitz and glamour that shone so brightly! Above is a photograph prior to the event, all of the ladies were dressed by local business woman, Carolyn Poole who owns the designer boutique, Chique in Armthorpe. They arrived in style in a red double decker bus. Below is a photograph at School of yet more beautiful young ladies and dresses. A wonderful evening was had by all with lots of memories to treasure. Parents everywhere sighed with relief that all had gone to plan and wiped away a few tears!

AUCKLEY SHOW RULES
All exhibits to be staged between 9am and 11 am on the day. Exhibits must be grown by and be the property of the exhibitor. The exception to this is class 42 to 52 inclusive and class 102. If, in the opinion of the judges, none of the exhibits in a particular class merit a prize, the committee reserves the right to withhold any prize in that class. The decision of the judges is final and binding. Any protest regarding interpretation of these rules, or any other matter, must be made to the show secretary on the day of the show. No exhibits to be removed before 3.45pm. Exhibits not claimed by 4.00pm will be presumed donated and will be sold. An auction will take place at 4.00pm. The proceeds will be used to cover the cost of the show. The committee will not be liable for damage or loss to persons or property. Exhibits must not have been shown in the previous year. In other respects, the show will be conducted in accordance with the rules and standards of the Royal Horticulture Society, as laid down in their handbook.
PRIZES IN ALL CLASSES Adult: 1st Rosette 2nd Rosette 3rd Rosette Children: 1st £2.50 & Rosette 2nd £1.50 & Rosette A Few Tips for Exhibitors
3rd £1.00 & Rosette
1.
Please make sure you read the schedule and count your exhibits, an extra potato or carrot will not be judged and marked N.T.S. (not to schedule) 2. Vegetables should generally be as large as possible, exceptions being potatoes and beetroot where judges like to see good clean medium sized exhibits, look for the requisite number of even sized exhibits – 4 good medium carrots will usually beat 3 big ones plus a little one. 3. Judges tend to favour cucumber or courgettes with the flower or its remains intact. 4. For the adult class, paintings etc should be nicely framed and clean. Not so important in the children’s class. 5. Cookery classes should be well cooked but not overdone, again make sure you enter the correct quantity. Check that the pastry of custards and flans is fully cooked. 6. Jam, pickles etc should be in clean clear glass containers. 7. Arts and crafts exhibits should be clean and free of creases. 8. To enable judging to be done fairly, please do not put your name on the front of the exhibits. 9. Flowers should be as fresh as possible; dropped petals may loose you points. 10. Wines – although any bottle will be accepted, to really impress the judge use 26 fluid oz clear punted bottles fitted with a flanged cork stopper. Screw tops will be accepted. 11 Beer Lager, any bottle will be accepted but to impress the judge, the use of 1 pint plain brown bottles, sealed with a crown top is ideal. 12. Please do not be afraid to have a go, challenge your neighbour to have a go, a little friendly competition can be good fun. If you are beaten, resolve to win next year. Please Note every effort will be made to look after your exhibits, but accidents do happen. So please do not enter any item of extreme monetary or sentimental value that could be possibly damaged

News From Branton St Wilfrid’s Primary School Class 5’s Trip to St Wilfrid’s Church On Wednesday 11th July, Class 5 went on their trip to St Wilfrid’s Church as part of their RE topic on churches. We had been learning about church buildings in school and had done a little research before our visit. When we arrived, we were met by Father John, who told us a little about the history of St Wilfrid’s church. We found out that the arch by the entrance dates back to Anglo -Saxon times. Next, we answered a quiz about St Wilfrid’s and its features. We had to go around the church, looking for different things to answer lots of questions. We found a statue of St Hilda of Whitby, counted the Stations of the Cross and went in the Lady Chapel to find a statue of Our Lady of Walsingham. All too soon, it was time to go but before we did, Father showed us the special levitating pyx in the church! A pyx is a special box to hold the consecrated host or Eucharist from mass services and at St Wilfrid’s, there is a special one which can be suspended in mid air, or stored away from view under a beautifully decorated screen on the ceiling. Class 5 really enjoyed their trip to the church and would like to thank Father John for showing us around. By Class 5 Summer Music Concerts During the second half of the Summer term we celebrated the talents of our musical children. We began with a visit from The Hayfield School Orchestra and choir, who entertained us with their wide repertoire. Next our own violinists played for their parents and the whole school, followed by concerts from the brass, recorder and guitar groups within school. Our Jubilate group sang in concert at Cantley Methodist Church and then chose a selection of their favourite hymns to perform in school. Branton really does have talent! Visit by The Bishop of Doncaster The Bishop of Doncaster, The Rt Revd Peter Burrows, visited our school recently. Our Jubilate worship group led our morning assembly and then the Bishop toured school. To the children’s delight, he set each teacher a spelling test which, I am pleased to report, they all passed with flying colours! Our Class 6 met the Bishop again as we attended the Leavers’ service for Diocesan schools at Doncaster Minster.

We celebrated Olympic Week with lots of Olympic themed events, our two traditional Sports Days, a closing ceremony, a visit from an Olympic Medallist and an Olympic Torch! We managed to dodge the rain long enough to hold our traditional Sports Days. To add a global touch, our colour teams ran under the flags of China (Red), Greece (Blue), Jamaica (Green) and Ethiopia (Yellow). Both events went well and the children demonstrated good sporting behaviour as well as determination and excellence! Jamaica brought home the Trophy for both the Junior and Infant events. Well done Green team! We had our own Torch ceremony on the school field on Tuesday 26 th June whilst the real torch made its way through Doncaster. We found out a lot of facts about where the flame had come from and the symbolism of both the flame and the 2012 Torch design.

All the children from Year 1 upwards had a taster session in field hockey, thanks to the coaches from Doncaster Hockey Club. They had lots of fun trying out a new sport.
Each class completed their own Olympic activities in lesson time, finding out about the ancient and modern history of the games, the sports, the competitors, the logos and the mascots. We completed our week with a closing ceremony and Achievement Assembly. We were privileged to welcome Amanda Britten (nee Broadbent), a Taekwondo Olympic medallist from the Barcelona Olympics and a parent of our school, to our closing ceremony. She spoke about the hard work needed to become an Olympian and inspired us all to work as hard as we can in our chosen field. A very big thank you to everyone who helped to make this week very special!
A big thank you to the family of Luke in Year 2, who lent us an Olympic torch to open the proceedings. It was amazing for the children (and families and friends) to see a real Olympic torch up close.

The P.T.A. Summer Fair The weather was kind as we held our bi-annual Summer Fair on the school playing field. There were a wide variety of attractions, including bouncy castles, a driving school, archery, penalty shoot-out competitions and displays by gymnastics, taekwondo and dance groups. We had our traditional balloon launch, with the balloons set free by Kieran in Class 3, who won the competition for the best poster to advertise the Fair. We were delighted to welcome people from the local community alongside children and their families from school. The P.T.A. raised an amazing ÂŁ2000 through all their hard work, which will be used to purchase equipment and finance exciting visitors into school. We hope you enjoyed reading about our varied activities this month. We will share more of our news in the next edition. Best Wishes, C.Barnes Acting Headteacher

Auckley School News
Visit From The Olympic Torch We have been very lucky at Auckley as we have been visited by the Olympic torch. It came to see us on our Olympic Themed sports day. All of the children were thrilled to see it and had the opportunity to have their photos taken with it. The children ran brilliantly and took part in Olympic based activities while they were not running. An excellent day was had by all.
Year 1 visit to Cleethorpes At the end of last month year 1 visited Cleethorpes and had a wonderful time. It rained but that didn’t dampen the spirits as the children walked on the beach and built sandcastles. In the afternoon they had a ride on the Cleethorpes Light Railway. The day was a great success although the children now want to go to the beach every time it rains!

Hayfield Lane Primary School News
Hayfield Land Primary School does Treasure Island Once again we were very proud of our Key Stage 2 children and their performances of this action packed musical of Treasure Island that had plenty of lively nautical fun! The singing from years 3, 4 and 5 was superb and very enthusiastic. However the stars of the show were our fearsome pirates and cast. Everyone who came to watch the production was amazed at the quality of the acting and singing. The children were a delight to work, had so much fun putting this together and should be proud of their commitment to the production. Well done Key Stage 2!
Doncaster Book Awards Our year 6 class went to the Doncaster Athletic Stadium to attend the finale of the 2011/2012 Doncaster Book Awards. On arrival the children took part in a parade around the track waving flags, masks of characters out of books and banners that they had made. They took part in many activities including line dancing, a zombie race, bunny badminton and Long John Silver Jump. The class also took part in a World Reading Relay where every child from each school had to read a line out of last year’s winning book. The British and world record was broken of 481 readers in a non-stop relay. So hopefully it will appear in next year’s Guinness Book of World Records. Billionaire Boy written by David Walliams won the award. Year 6 had a fantastic day and even won the zombie race.

Fond Farewells It is always sad at the end of any school year when we have to say goodbye to people who have been at our school for a long time. We say goodbye and good luck to our year 6 pupils who are all moving on to The Hayfield School in September. We congratulate them on their fantastic Sats results and wish them well in their new school. We also say goodbye to Mr Winter who has been at Hayfield Lane for what he said, “has been that long that I can’t remember!!!” All the Staff and Pupils will miss him and school will not be the same without him, but we wish him well in his new adventures outside of education. Hayfield Lane would like to take this opportunity to wish all Staff, Pupils and The Branton and Auckley Arrow readers a safe and happy summer and look forward to bringing you more news in September.

Are we nearly there yet? I’m not a great traveller. I haven’t flown for more than ten years and see the journey to get me where I’m going, whether that’s by car, coach or train as simply a means to an end. My Dad still maintains that as a child my first ‘are we nearly there yet’ would always come before we were even at the end of our road when we went away as a family. Don’t get me wrong - I love going to new places and meeting new people just don’t like the process. Having just moved to Doncaster to start my new job as Curate it has occurred to me that the whole of life is a journey. There are those who happily set out not quite sure of their destination and then there are others who have to ensure every part of a journey is meticulously planned. I thought I had my journey through life pretty well planned. I had a career in lecturing, a house with a mortgage and a lifestyle that was comfortable if a little predictable. Or so I thought. Then God began to work in my life in ways that I had never previously thought possible. I encountered the Holy Spirit, felt God pushing me along on my journey and had four friends independently say to me ‘I think you might be called to ordained ministry.’ And that was it. A thirteen year career in lecturing resigned, the house rented out and a move to college turned my life Arms not long enough? upside down and I haven’t looked back since. I’d be the first to admit that the journey hasn’t been easy. There have been times when I’ve felt like giving up. What has kept me going is the companionship. I suspect few people like travelling alone and the best journeys are the ones when we travel with those we love. My companions along the way have been my family and friends who I’ve known for years and the new friends I made at college and now in my new parish. But most importantly as a Christian I believe I have the companionship of God with me at all times. He is there when I rejoice and there when I weep and I know He is with me as I begin this next stage of my journey here. I look forward to seeing the exciting things He has planned unfold. Revd. Louise Tinniswood St Saviour’s, Auckley and St Oswald’s & Holy Trinity, Finningley
