Editors Letter... Back to school, back to work what else can I say about September! I don't know about you but I had a fantastic August watching the Olympics on TV. Didn't Team GB do well? For all of you who had tickets for events I bet you had a fabulous time. I tired my hardest to get tickets but failed miserably and I was so annoyed at all the empty seats at the events. The main event in September is the charity evening at Forest Pines Hotel, Brigg. Money raised will be for Alexander Strong a local boy! All details are on page 12. Please support this event. Please keep sending in your articles especially if you have any events for charity. Once again I would like to thank all my advertisers and all the people who delivery the Arrow. You are all doing a great job come rain or shine! If anyone is interested in delivering the Arrow please email me your details.

News, News, News, News, News, News, News, News... Ladies who Lunch
Barry Johnston, a very humorous and personable man, was the last speaker of the session at the Scunthorpe & District Ladies’ Luncheon Club. It was quite a momentous occasion for some because they could remember when his father, Brian Johnston, ( Jonners) was the speaker at the club in 1969. After a delicious lunch served by the staff of the Wortley House Hotel, the members listened with pleasure and amusement to his talk as he told of his father’s career and exploits. They were also quick to buy his books afterwards. The next session of the luncheon club will begin in September with another programme of excellent speakers lined up. Every second Wednesday in the month, the members gather, some arriving in time for coffee beforehand, to meet friends, chat and enjoy a delicious lunch and then relax whilst being entertained by the day’s speaker. Amongst the speakers for the coming session are Rosa and Bill Tidy, (cartoonist), Judy Theobold, Journalist, John Pilkington, adventurer and photographer extraordinaire and Libby Morris, entertainer. Lunch is served at 12.30pm.

Isle of Axholme – North Ward Priorities Market Place and Potts Lane, Crowle. – Anti-social Behaviour and Criminal Damage to Property. During July there have been three calls for service for the Market Place and two for Potts Lane. The incidents in the Market place related to intelligence regarding the whereabouts of a wanted person, a vehicle revving its engine and criminal damage to an unattended car. The wanted person has since been located, there were no details of the vehicle causing a noise nuisance and so the person PC1717 PCSO 7889 PCSO 7576 responsible has not been traced and several youths have been spoken to Graham Godley Wendy Frear Paul Fearon in connect with the offence of damage. Tracey Coyne of Safer Neighbourhoods has sent out problem exploration forms to residents and businesses around the Market Place. Children are continuing to use the paved area of the Market Place as a play area and as reported in last months web pages there were several incidents of plants being uprooted from the ornamental tubs in the square. Tracey has also contacted the Youth Club Staff, Street Sports, Street Talk Team and all of the local schools to encourage young people away from playing in the Market Place and to use the park facilities provided for them in Crowle. They are all going to explain the skate park is in response to the young people having no where to go and by using these facilities will encourage more to be provided in the future. The Street Talk Team that visit Crowle on a weekly basis are also going to forward Tracey regular update reports from the engagement they carry out. The two incidents at Potts Lane concerned a group of youths causing a nuisance playing football in the car park and a group of youths kicking what appeared to be a plastic barrel along the road during the early hours of the morning creating a noise nuisance. The youths had moved on prior to the police arriving at the two locations. The Neighbourhood Team include the area on the regular patrol matrix and stop and check any vehicles and persons in the area. Often groups are spoken to in the Market Place but are not committing any offences and so the Police have no powers to move them on from the public area. Any offences which are revealed are dealt with positively. Windsor Park and Godnow Road, Crowle. – Anti-social behaviour and youths congregating and causing a nuisance to local residents, On Monday 23rd July a complaint was received regarding the anti-social behaviour of a group of youths making their way back into Crowle along Godnow Road from Windsor Park Playing Field. The incident occurred during the early hours of Saturday 21st July with youths running in and out of gardens, tapping on windows, placing garden tubs in the middle of the road and generally behaving in a disorderly manner. The complainant has been visited by PC GODLEY and Tracey COYNE of North Lincolnshire Council Safer Neighbourhoods and cameras are to be installed. Requests have been put in place for more police patrols to be made in the area with a view to identifying those concerned and taking positive action against them. Residents who experience any similar problems are asked to report the matter at the time it is occurring so that a police patrol can attend and deal with the matter promptly. The telephone number for Humberside Police is 101. A further complaint has been received regarding vehicles attending at the playing field car park late at night and sounding their horns causing a nuisance to local residents. A police unit did attend but the youths and vehicles involved had already left the area and no vehicle details were known. Vicars Walk and Church Street, Crowle. – Anti-social behaviour and vehicle nuisance in the car park and youths congregating and causing a nuisance to local residents. This was last month’s Priority Two but in view of their being only two calls for service during July it has been decided to remove the location from the priority listing. The two calls for service were for Church Street. One was regarding a group of youth having been in the church yard at St Oswald’s and causing a nuisance by leaving litter behind. The call was made the day after the incident when the litter was discovered and the identity of the youths responsible is not known. The other call was in relation to parking and the owner of the vehicle involved has been spoken to and suitable advice has been given. There were no reported incidents on Vicars Walk. The area will remain as part of the Neighbourhood Police patrol matrix and the team will continue to monitor any problems in the area. Holiday Work My youngest son has been home on ‘vacation’ from University for several weeks. He has a number of text books on his desk from the University library recommended for holiday reading in preparation for his second year. Being the caring father I am, I asked him how his study was going. So far, he has read the first page of the first book. When I enquired further, he reminded me that there was the European Football Cup followed by Wimbledon, with Cricket Test Match highlights to watch in between. Now he’s into the Olympics after a few days real holiday with his brothers and Granny. He’s very quick to point out that I have enjoyed his company in front of the TV more than usual ! Isn’t it easy to get distracted? I am sure that when my son has read all his books before going back to University, he will say his days of armchair sport was time well spent. (To be fair, he goes on marathon bicycle rides regularly). Whatever is on the box, whether it happens every four years or more often, I need to make sure I don’t get too distracted by gold medals on earth but rather concentrate on He who gives out gold medals in heaven. OSCARS COME TO TOWN On the 20th June 2012, The Axholme Academy held its second ever Oscar’s Evening. The aim of the evening was to showcase the students’ achievements over the last two years. Most people dressed up and looked very dapper. The front reception, diner and the hall were decorated for the occasion. In the front reception, there was a long red carpet stretching from the front door to the hall doors where a blue and gold balloon archway shimmered magnificently in the light. The carpet was supplied by Parkers Carpets and Flooring of Brigg. There was also an advert board where photographs were taken. A ‘Pamper Hamper’ raffle was launched on the night, with proceeds going to Sheffield Children’s Hospital. We were fortunate to have contents for the hampers donated by staff and vouchers donated by Paul Gordon Hair Salon, Scunthorpe, The Willows, Epworth & Hatty’s Tea Room in Epworth. Upon arrival the guests received a complimentary glass of Shloer, kindly donated by the company itself. An excellent buffet was held in the diner at the interval with the crisps donated by Pipers Crisps Co. Another display board was in the diner showing examples of students work which made the evening possible. Everything in the hall was decorated in blue and gold and the tables were covered in mini gold and blue stars. At the left corner of the stage were the musicians and singers who provided a musical interlude at the start of the evening and at the interval under the direction of Mr Clark. The people that were singing sounded incredible. The projector showed pictures and movie clips that the students had made. Some of them even won an award for the hard work and the end products, which were also amazing. Some were funny, some were sad, and some were important messages that taught us all a lesson. Kirsten Carney and Eleanor Coultard were very good hosts for the evening. There were different categories in which the winner and the runner-up came away with an award; the first category was animation. The animations that were nominated included: Romeo and Juliet (the Potato Story) – 8B English, Animation by Letitia Bolton – 2011, Year 9 Media PLTS Day, Room 13 and Open Evening video. The winner of the Animation category was Letitia Bolton and her clay animation. This animation was constructed and written by Letitia. She used metaphor and symbolism to create the narrative. She did this in her free time at home and school at the end of her last year at the school in Year 11. The next category was all about film, the nominees were a selection of Beowulf films by 8A English, Missing ‘Everybody Writes Day’ – 8B English, Peace at Last- Year’s 1 & 2 and Willow Pattern Story – Year 3 of Althorpe and Keadby Primary School. The winner of this award was ‘Missing’, this film was created as part of Everybody Writes Day, it was about a girl who ran away because of bullying and neglect. The class 8B did a storyboard then acted it out. The third category was for Documentary and the nominations were CS Charity Videos, BBC News School Report – Years 8, 9 & 10, Media Day 2011 and 9E Science Film. The winner of the best Documentary was the ‘BBC News School Report’. Music was category number four. There were many nominees for the award including; Marisa Lee for the Year 9 PLTS Day – Pushing Illegal Downloads Away, Chloe Brocklesby and Francesca Cheshire for the Missing Soundtrack and Peter Castledine’s piece in Beowulf. The winner of the Best Music award went to Chloe Brocklesby and Francesca Cheshire for their10 soundtrack for the film ‘Missing’ – Everybody Writes Day.responding Please mention “The Arrow” when

The next category was Still image. The images nominated were Art Deco Posters – Year 9, 9A & 9B produced observational drawings of wine bottles and wine glasses. The students of 9L & 9E designed posters advertising the 2012 Olympic Games. The next group of work came from GCSE Fine Art and GCSE Art & Design (Graphic Communication) where they used Photoshop to create an image. There were also entries from the Media Department covering: magazine covers, web design, film posters, perfume adverts and copyright posters. The winner of the best Still Image was Sam Howden for his Seafood Restaurant Menu cover created for his Art & Design (Graphic Communication) module. The final category for students at The Axholme Academy was Print. There were many students involved. Most of them were involved because of the Student newspaper over the last two years. Students from all years were involved. But some other students did a page in the Scunthorpe Telegraph. The winner of the best article was Poppy Robinson with her article ‘Looking at Make –up’ in the February 2011 edition of the NAX News. The last category was Primary School Photography, where pupils from Crowle, Luddington and Garthorpe schools sent in photographs for the competition. Jamie Gracey, 6, was the winner of the best photograph with his pictures of birds feeding. When I asked Jamie a few questions he told me ‘I was really happy when I won. I think the trophy looks really nice and I really like it. I thought the night was fun and I enjoyed myself.’ Written by Will Mendes Da Costa & Marcus Zincke
