Celebrating 20 Years of Arrow Publications: A Thank You to Our Community

As we step into our 20th year of publishing the Arrow Magazine, we reflect with gratitude on the incredible journey that has brought us to this milestone. Over the past two decades, we have been privileged to serve the Doncaster community by delivering a publication that is as unique as the areas it covers.

The Arrow Magazine has always been more than just a local newsletter. It’s a resource, a voice, and a connection for residents across Doncaster. Each edition is carefully crafted and edited to reflect the specific needs, interests, and events of the neighborhoods it serves.

This accomplishment would not have been possible without the support of local businesses. We are deeply grateful to the many companies that have advertised with us over the years. Some have been with us since the very beginning, supporting us every month without fail. Your continued trust and commitment to our publication are what allow us to maintain the high-quality content our readers rely on.

We would also like to thank the many contributors who enrich the magazine with their articles, stories, and ideas. To our loyal readers, your enthusiasm and feedback keep us motivated to deliver the best we can. And to the distributors who ensure that the magazine reaches every home, your hard work behind the scenes does not go unnoticed.

As we celebrate this remarkable milestone, we look forward to the next chapter of Arrow Magazine. We’re excited to continue serving you, our wonderful community, and we’re grateful for your ongoing support. Thank you for being a part of this journey - here’s to many more years of connection, information, and growth together! With warmest thanks, The

Seeking Your Views on the Policing Precept

The South Yorkshire Mayor, Oliver Coppard, is asking for your views on the setting of the policing precept for South Yorkshire – the small part of your council tax bill that is spent on policing and crime services.

South Yorkshire Police work hard every day to keep our communities safe and it is important that you have your say on the amount you pay towards policing.

The money will be used to tackle the issues that you are telling us that are important:

• Increasing confidence in policing

• Tackling antisocial behaviour

• Reducing knife crime

• Working towards Vision Zero - eliminating all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, accepting that traffic accidents are preventable

• Preventing CSE and pursuing those who commit offences

The responses you provide will be used to form part of the proposal for the council tax precept for next year.

The survey will close at 12 noon on Monday 3 February.

Take part in the survey by going to this link: https://forms.office.com/e/71LQhxePkz or scanning the QR code.

Friends of Quarry Park

The Friends had a busy end to 2024 with their Work Party on 6th December and an additional session the following week for tree planting.

Concrete slabs that had kindly been donated were laid underneath some of the benches to help stop erosion of the grass and soil; graffiti was cleaned off bins and information boards and litter was picked. Another team tackled the overgrown shrubbery and brambles around the perimeter of St Mary’s car park as well as clearing grass and weeds that were covering the sleepers on the bridle path access. Our mascot Riley was on duty ensuring everyone was working hard!

At the end of the session Julie and Debra’s cakes and mince pies were enjoyed by all and the final shots were taken for our amazing Christmas video written, produced and starred in by the very talented Dan!

Some of the group enjoyed a meal and drinks at Hatfields to celebrate Christmas, where there was a draw of all the volunteers for 2 vouchers generously donated by Harry’s which were won by Pete and Dan. We also helped out at the Dunsville Community Centre Christmas lunch serving food, drinks and pot washing for around 80 local senior citizens.

Our tree planting session was a result of The Friends being awarded a Community Orchard grant from Environmental Pride. This initiative, which is led by St. Leger Homes and City of Doncaster Council, with active participation from Get Doncaster Moving, was established in 2022 to support community-led environmental improvement projects in Doncaster.

Ten of our volunteers met on the park on a chilly Friday afternoon to plant 20 fruit tree saplings consisting of plum, cherry, apple, damson and pear. We were joined by Julia from the Woodland Development Team who assisted with the planting and shared her expertise on caring for the trees to ensure their survival. Hopefully within 2-3 years there will be an abundance of fruit available for the community to share, as well as beautiful blossom to admire in the Spring. Other equipment funded through this grant includes a trolley for carting tools and cannisters of water to keep the saplings hydrated during dry spells, fertiliser, gloves and pruning saws. The group is extremely grateful for this generous grant and the support we have received from Environmental Pride.

Unfortunately, our first Work Party of 2025 had to be postponed due to the inclement weather. This will hopefully take place on 17th January, weather permitting.

Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. Tasks include litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 7th February and Friday 7th March 10am – 12 noon, meet at the picnic table. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.

Phoenix Pantomime 2025

Once again, the Woodhouse Phoenix Amateur Dramatic Group has pulled off a smash hit Pantomime, Alice in Wonderland. The pantomime was presented in five performances over four days at the beginning of January. The cast had been rehearsing twice weekly since September. As expected the sets and props were spectacularly colourful, the costumes out of this world and the stage lighting stunning. The casts long rehearsals paid off in the musical numbers which were made more wonderful by the hard work of the sound technicians and choreographers.

Whilst the audiences were transported to that magical wonderland by the singing and dancing of the chorus and principals the overall production was underpinned by the work of the backstage members, our costume mistresses, and especially the direction of our producer Tina Bradbury, who puts in such a lot of hard work and toil to make her overall vision come alive on stage. Mention has also to be made to those team members of front of house without whom the show could not go ahead.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST

We are happy to report that the Memory Tree last November/December made £1,747.Thank you to everyone who gave so generously and it was also lovely to see so many messages on the Christmas tree. We would like to sincerely thank our volunteers who always give their time so cheerfully during this busy season. The Charity Christmas Concert at Doncaster Minster on 14th December raised a wonderful £2,023 for us. We are so very grateful to Dot Miller and the Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers and also the Hatfield and Askern Colliery Band for making the evening such a resounding success. We would also like to thank the Co-op for providing refreshments during the interval. It was testament to all their hard work that the concert was a sell-out!
